| | Got Plans? With the Entertainment Guide Staff washingtonpost.com Thursday, June 12, 2003; 1:00 p.m ET Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service. Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours. Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide. The discussion ended at 2:20. The transcript follows. Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions. | The Going Out Gurus: We're officially into June, it's finally getting warm and the summertime Washington transformation has begun: Interns are here, and so is our Interns Guide, a playbook for living on the cheap in our very expensive city. In between planning happy hours, remember to show Dad some love this Sunday -- our Father's Day Guide has ideas for going out with the Man. So what's up with you? This week, we're busy counting your write-in nomimations for the Best Bets contest so we can tell you the nominees on June 25. Alexa, Fritz, Jen, Joe, Kate, Maura are on their marks, ready to chase the clouds away. I'm Anne, and my burning question of the week is: who was that Fritz-lookalike at the Polyphonic Spree show? ________________________________________________ In love: Around Valentine's day, there was an article about the most romantic tables to dine at around town. My fiance and I are trying to find a nice place to have a romantic dinner, but I couldn't find the link. Could you post it? The Going Out Gurus: I'm not sure what article you are thinking about. Was it in Weekend? I'll continue to root around, but in the meantime, here, cutie-pies, is a list of restaurants we think are very romantic. -- Alexa ________________________________________________ Officeland, DC: Any further updates on matrix reloaded as IMAX? Will it be showing in DC or Baltimore? THX! The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Officeland. I (Jen) was on vacation, otherwise I would have shared this information during last Thursday's chat. The "Reloaded" IMAX version is not coming to D.C. or Baltimore. The location closest to us is Hampton, Virginia. So if you're dying to see it, you'll need to make a three-hour or so journey. Sorry, kids. First no Uptown. Now this. Ah, well. Better luck with "Revolutions." ________________________________________________ Washington, DC: What's the best happy hour downtown to catch the new intern crowd? Cheep, cool, close by. The Going Out Gurus: It's nice to know that Bill Clinton reads this chat. ________________________________________________ Italian from Arlington: I'm looking for a good Italian bakery to take my parents (they're from out of town). It doesn't have to be a sit down place, I'm just in search of good cannolis, tiramisu and cookies! Any recommendations close to Arlington/DC? The Going Out Gurus: A nice place for you is Viareggio in Dupont. It has all the things of which you speak and the tiramisu, especially, is class. -- Alexa ________________________________________________ From Virginia: Hey Guru's, What's the scoop on this new outdoor lounge/nightclub called "AIR" that's opening up soon? Thanks The Going Out Gurus: Wow. I think I got that announcement from three different "promoters" this morning, Va. I'm trying to figure out exactly what I can tell people about it, as many details still seem to be up in the air. Here's what's definite: It'll be held in Woodrow Wilson Plaza -- the courtyard of the quasi-governmental Ronald Reagan International Trade Center -- on Friday and Saturday nights, starting June 21. "Doors" will be from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., and there will be a cover charge. (I'm going to guess $10.) Organizers are promising loads of nice furniture, multiple bars and plenty of space to relax; capacity is around 1400. There will be DJs, and while I'm not sure whether I can name names, what I've been told sounds good. I know this sounds sketchy, but it should be a fun event for the summer -- if the weather cooperates. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ AM: So who saw the Ash show last nite? I love Emmy Lou, but how could Ash not have made the Soundcheck? They completely blew the roof off the Black Cat. It was a treat to see them in such an intimate venue. The Going Out Gurus: Sorry, I feel like an ash for not including it. Sounds like I missed a good show. - Joe ________________________________________________ Washington, D.C.: I've read about the spy tours and I think my friend would really to go when he comes to visit next week/weekend but I can't seem to find any info on when they go, prices, etc. Some are walking tours, some are bus tours I think? Is it a regular thing or do I have to form my own group for the tour? Any info would be appreciated, as would any other suggestions about where to take a friend who's into cold war/spy/James Bond type stuff. Thanks! - DC Agent The Going Out Gurus: DC Agent, despite being eclipsed by the Spy Museum, the Spy Tours are still going strong. You're right some are by bus, others walking. Unfortunately, it seems the next tour is July 5, but check it out right here. -- Maura ________________________________________________ Adams Morgan: Hi all, What's going on with Cafe Toulouse? It's been shut down & empty for a couple weeks now. It was one of my dependable live-music places...thanks. The Going Out Gurus: Sigh. It looks like the curse of Lautrec has struck again... I'll try to dig up the owner's number again, because the club's phone "cannot take calls at this time." You're right -- it was always a solid, cover-free night of music. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Uptown: Ugh, stressing over dinner with the parents. They're staying at the Fairmont (G'town/Foggy Bottom) and don't get into anything "ethnic" which severely limits our options. Cafe Milano and any of the steakhouses are happily visited, but I want something new! How about Nectar - good choice? The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Nectar's fine. It's small and beige and the service is a bit stiff. But we liked it ok. Also in those parts -- Marcel's (Belgian), the Circle Bistro, and -- a short walk up New Hampshire -- Firefly. -- Alexa ________________________________________________ MtP: Hey Gurus! Any recommendations for a novice theater-goer who wants to catch a show this weekend? I was browsing the selections in your search engine, and some of the stuff at the Source Theatre looks promising. But, I'm ashamed to admit that I've never been to the theater in DC, so I would love some guidance. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Hi there. You might try catching "Kenneth, What is the Frequency," a Cherry Red production that recently opened at Source. Or, if you can wait just a bit beyond the weekend, Woolly Mammoth has pay-what-you-can performances next week of its new show, "Patience." As always, check the TICKETplace listings, too. Sounds like you're willing to experiment, but it's always best to do that without spending too much cash. Good luck and enjoy. -- Jen ________________________________________________ Eastern Market: Does anybody know of any bingo parlors that allow drinking, would be open on a Saturday night and are preferably near a Metro? I know that's a lot to ask but a girl can dream right? The Going Out Gurus: Too much to ask, me thinks. I like bingo too. There are precious few local firehall games (read: none) where drinking beers is welcome. Sounds to me like you need to bring a friend to Chaos for Drag Bingo next Tuesday night. Come summertime here are plenty of home-tattoo'd carny's ready to offer you the games of a lifetime at local fairs. I know you'll be happy to hear I won on my first and only card at the Fredrick Fair last September (twin flashlights with batteries!!! my choice over the Bud mirror and glasses set) Also, novelty bingo fans, star your calendars: Sunday, July 20 at the Fauquier County Fair in Warrenton, VA, cowpie bingo is on the "menu." -- Kate ________________________________________________ Woodley Park: The Tuesday Polyphonic Spree show was amazing, I haven't seen such an intense flute player since Ian Anderson. Did Wednesday pack the same energy with the hurricane outside? Was the Fritz lookalike in the band? And my projection TV broke the day the Old School DVD came out, go figure... The Going Out Gurus: We went Tuesday too. Anyone go Weds? Fritz II was in the audience, on the floor, near the front, right side when facing the stage. We think we saw Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Jen Aniston in the band, though. ________________________________________________ Springfield, Va.: Is Marrakesh a good place to take Dad on Father's Day? The Going Out Gurus: As good a place as any if he's into undulating bellies. Yeah, why not? -- Alexa ________________________________________________ Arlington, VA: For the girl asking about Abita beer last week - Harris Teeter sells both Turbo Dog and Purple Haze right in the regular beer aisle of the store. The Going Out Gurus: Cheers! ________________________________________________ Wash, DC: Polyphonice Spree rocks! The Trachtenberg Family Sideshow was a great warm-up, but I'm glad it didn't go on any longer than it did. I could have listed to those be-robed folks all night! What else is coming that I might enjoy, given my happiness over the spree? The Going Out Gurus: I agree DC. I thought Polyphonic Spree was amazing. Though I couldn't stand Trachtenberg Family. I'll be happy to never see them again. But I think the Spree is a one of a kind thing. Though, if the Flaming Lips come through town any time soon, go see them. Same very positive vibe. - Joe ________________________________________________ Re: Bill Clinton : For intern booty hunters. I work near Union Station and enjoyed a nice lunch outside at -The Dubliner- on Mass Ave yesterday and couldn't help but notice all the intern age girls walking by. They must be near by... The Going Out Gurus: Now this is helpful information. Thanks for it. ________________________________________________ Arlington, VA: I asked this a few weeks ago, what was replacing DC Sessions this year if anything, no bands have been announced but the web page is up, www.liveonpenn.com is what is replacing DC Sessions. The Going Out Gurus: Yup, Live On Penn is replacing DC Sessions and there's still no word about bands. Expect an announcement about lineups in the next week or two. - Joe ________________________________________________ Dupont, Wash 20009: Somehow I got on a list-serve that is promoting a Pet Shop Boys dance party all night this Friday at Club Daedalus. I've never even heard of this place, and I've lived here for five years. Is it going to be gay, straight, questioning? What's the club size, dress code, cover, etc.? I really like PSB, but don't know about Downtown dance clubs, which usually reek--of designer imposter bodyspray. I'd prefer a gay Mousetrap scene to Polly Esther's, am I outta luck? The Going Out Gurus: Good questions all, Dupont. I've got the event in the most recent This Week in Nightlife column, so here's what I've found out: this is a one-off event run by the promoters of White, a new weekly dance party at Club Daedalus. While Daedalus usually caters to a hip-hop/house-loving Asian crowd, White is run by a bunch of ex-Panic regulars, and their playlists are all over the place (Garbage, Morrissey, The Faint). I didn't go to the opening party last week, but I heard mixed reviews. I'd certainly expect it to be a mixed gay-straight crowd -- we ARE talking about the Pet Shop Boys. On a related note, I've been informed that the event closest to a gay Mousetrap, Feint, has ended. That's pretty disappointing. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Rockville, MD: Hey Gurus!!! Love your advice! What are some good places to go for dinner in Silver Spring, preferably close to the new Silver Theatre. Also, have you guys mentioned SilverDocs? It's going to be an awesome film festival sponsored by Discovery Channel and AFI. Thanks, J The Going Out Gurus: We have a link to Silverdocs on the movies page, actually. You're quite right, it sounds like a great festival. As far as where to eat dinner near the Silver, that's still something of a problems. Some new restaurants will eventually open adjacent to the theater, but until that happens, pickings are a little slim. If you're willing to drive a short distance over to Georgia Ave., you can get good seafood in an old school setting at Crisfield. Other suggestions, Silver Springers? -- Jen ________________________________________________ Washington DC: hey GOGs, what's the best hangover remedy you know of? I didn't "over-indulge" last night, i went out like a champ. only hilarious quips issued from my mouth, all women loved me and despaired, i was at once invulnerable and magnanimus. i am a golden god. The Going Out Gurus: I think we were drinking at the same bar. (Except for the Golden God bit.) The only certain cures are time and water. Loads of water. Of course, Chinese delivery at 3 a.m. never hurts. And stay away from Tylenol and Advil. They do bad things. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Ruby, NY: Hi! I won't be here for the discussion but I really hope you can answer my question. My fiance and I are traveling to Washington DC this July for the second time and would like to know where we can go that tourists don't normally go. Specifically, "off the tourist trail" like small museums or out of the way theaters or just places where we can see the locals and not stand out like a tourists. We'll have a car so we don't mind driving a bit. We've been there once and did the whole Smithsonian and downtown area but now we want to see some "real" local flavor. Any ideas? The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Ruby. If you haven't checked out off the Mall museums like the Corcoran and the Phillips, add them to the itinerary immediately. And the Robert Frank and Marsden Hartley shows at each prove its perfect timing. Otherwise, stroll around neighborhoods like Capitol Hill (Eastern Market, the Folger Shakespeare Library, Montmartre, Bistro Bis) or U Street (Studio Theater, Kuna, Home Rule, the Black Cat, Saint-Ex) for starters. Check out our Visitors Guide for more ideas and enjoy. -- Maura ________________________________________________ Woodley Park: Hi, GOGs. I'm looking to buy a bicycle and don't know whether to buy one at Revolution Cycles or City Bikes. It looks like City Bikes does free tune ups for as long as you have your bike, where Revolution might not. Any experience with either of these stores? Thanks. The Going Out Gurus: City Bikes staff seems friendly to me -- the kind of people who will help you pick our cool bike gear for a cycling-obsessed friend's birthday. And free tuneups is a sweet deal -- I'd pick that. ________________________________________________ U Street: A friend told me something about a weekly Clint Eastwood film fest at Farrugut Park - but he didn't have any details for me. Do you know anything about this? The Going Out Gurus: I'm afraid I (Jen) don't, U Street. If someone else has info about a Clint fest, speak up. Go ahead. Make our day. ________________________________________________ Washignton, DC: I've heard about a new outdoor lounge and nightclub called Air. Do you have anymore information about this? The Going Out Gurus: Not beyond what I've typed above. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Arlington, Va: Follow up to last week -- there is a community yard sale/flea market type thing on the first Saturday of every month (well, it ends in November or something) at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington. I think the hours are 8-1 and it gets great turnout. It's in the parking lot on the side street (15th St., I think) near the planetarium. The Going Out Gurus: thanks for the tip! ________________________________________________ Virginia: Taking mom to visit boyfriend's house in DC this Sunday. We will then be going out to lunch. Any ideas for a reasonably priced place (typical American fare) in the Capitol Hill area or around Chinatown that is open then and would be a nice place for us to sit and talk? Thanks so much. The Going Out Gurus: What about Matchbox, a mostly pizza-ish place that sits just outside the China Town gate? It's delish for pizza, great for salads and sandwiches. -- Alexa ________________________________________________ Woodley Park: Hola Gurus! Could you please tell me the cheapest place to buy liquor/beer/wine in D.C. or close by? Throwing a birthday party on Saturday and I don't want to spend too much. P.S. If you answer this question, I'll invite you over for the party...
The Going Out Gurus: Big up the Woodley Park Massive. You need to hit Total Beverage or Costco in Va. for beer and wine (I like the branch in McLean), as for liquor -- straight up Connecticut Ave. to Calvert Woodley Liquors. They usually have good sales. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Washington, DC: I am going to see Chicago at the National Theater on Saturday and am looking for dinner suggestions pre-show. Something relatively nearby and not too pricey, although we will be dressed up. Thanks guys! Love the chats. The Going Out Gurus: Take a look at our pre-theater dining feature. That might help. Chef Geoff's isn't included in that round-up, but might also be a good option for you. Enjoy. -- Jen ________________________________________________ Dupont Circle: What time do you think Trans Am will take the stage tonight if there are three bands playing the Cat and the time listed is 8:30. I have to book it over to the club after a late night dishing chinos at Banana Republic--ugh. The Going Out Gurus: Well since they're headlining and it's a Thursday, they probably won't go on until 11. Maybe later. ________________________________________________ Silver Spring: Hey there. I'm new to the forum, and I have a pretty general question. My boyfriend from college is coming to visit for the first time next weekend. He's from Manhattan and is definitely a New York snob, and I want to show him that DC can be just as nice (if not better!). Any suggestions for things we could do downtown(especially beyond the normal touristy stuff? or touristy highlights?) And any ideas for a couple of nice, but not too overly expensive restaurants that would kind of give him a taste of the town? (We're both under 21, which makes things more difficult) Any classic DC experiences that are not to be missed? (Sorry for asking so many questions!) The Going Out Gurus: To see: Indie flicks (especially New York's bete noir, Matthew Barney) at AFI Silver. To do: Free hand-dancing lesson on the Millennium Stage at 6 on Friday -- very Lincoln Center. To eat: Zaytinya for Eastern Med., Matchbox for pizza, Bistrot du Coin for noise and mussels. For the scene and be seen: Burlesquefest at the 9:30 (must be over 18, but under 21 is okay). And 2 a.m. hot dogs at Ben's Chili Bowl -- gots to give him a taste that's truly D.C. too. We want him to comeback every weekend, no? -- Kate ________________________________________________ Petworth: For the don't-want-to-be-tourists tourist, may I offer a few suggestions? Frederick Douglass House Building Museum City Museum (See the city beyond the feds!) Rock Creek Park Rock Creek Cemetary (See the Saint-Gaudens) Franciscan Mosastary Take some neighborhood walking tours Hain's Point Local theater or music And try dining at restaurants the gurus recommend, rather than the ones in the guidebooks! The Going Out Gurus: Our beloved, Pet. Good answers all around. Thanks. ________________________________________________ Arlington: Can u tell me which bookstores will be open at midnight next friday to sell the new Harry Potter in va and dc? The Going Out Gurus: Lookee here (H)Ar(ry)lington. You're probably closest to Olsson's - Courthouse, and that's lucky. They're getting crates of books and the staff is fantastic. -- Kate ________________________________________________ Cerveza, USA: I'm looking to consume some Cusquena, a Peruvian beer and am wondering if anyone knows where to purchase it. It's dark, yet semi-sweet and absolutely fabulous. Don't even think of mentioning the Brickskeller. That place is a total sham, in my humble opinion. The Going Out Gurus: Fritz says try Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits in NW. And I have to agree with you a bit about Brickskeller. Anytime I go there and ask for my favorite two or three beers, they never have them (even though they are on their list). It's one thing to brag about having a huge selection, it's another to actually have the selection available. Anyone else know where to get Cusquena? Have you called the Peruvian embassy? - Joe ________________________________________________ DC: GOGS, I hope you'll answer my question because I'm leaving DC soon and won't need to bother you anymore!! I heard there were different dining rooms at 1789. Any suggestions about which one to request? Thanks!! The Going Out Gurus: I'm afraid I've no idea. Why not call and ask the person who picks up which room they think is the nicest. -- Alexa ________________________________________________ WDC; bikes info: try mtbreview.com, look at websites. ride all the bikes. then call around, ask for last year's models. save money, buy your friends giant burrito sandwiches. most places offer free 'adjustments'. i don't think that means a tune-up The Going Out Gurus: thanks, spokes-man ________________________________________________ Tomorrow is Friday the 13th....: and I'm scared, can Kate come protect me? The Going Out Gurus: Yes. And we will shout Jason and his big knife down together as the clock clicks midnight at Visions -- I LOVE the sound of Cheap Shots. Don't you? - K ________________________________________________ Arlington: Just read an article in my hometown paper about specialty cocktails and the elaborate prep . . . such as infusing Diamond Dole pineapple rings with Smirnoff vodka for five days and Skyy infused with blueberries, raspberries, Mandarin oranges, melons, strawberries and grapes. I'm a cocktail novice, but this sounds interesing. Where can I get drinks like that in DC? The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, I'm working on such a piece right now. If you're looking for the pineapple-infused vodka, the classic is the Stoli Doli at the Capital Grille; You might also want to visit Matchbox for a few other flavors. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Dupont: Feint hasn't ended yet. the last one is sunday night... The Going Out Gurus: Really? That's rad. Okay, for the guy who was looking for the gay Mousetrap scene, you should check out Feint. I've heard one DJ express an interest in carrying on the event -- we shall see. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ RE: Trachenberg: How could you not like the Trachenberg Family? They were awesome. The girl alone makes the band. The Going Out Gurus: If the girl alone was the entire band, I might have liked it. But I had to listen to her incredibly annoying father. I thought the whole shtick was completely unfunny. But hey, that's just me. - Joe ________________________________________________ harry potter?: wha? you going to stay up all night reading it? after midnight a gentleman should only read smut. The Going Out Gurus: Sir/Madam: I'll have you know I am no gentleman. Probably not much of a lady either. -- Kate And my answer, truthfully,is sweet Jesus! no. But the parties are sweet for HP fans. Politics & Prose has, for example, sworn not to close until every fan is "booked." ________________________________________________ Reston: I'm interested in visiting Eastern Market, but have no idea how to get there or what to expect or when to go. Will be traveling by metro. My bf is overprotective and insists that he come, just in case( I think he wants to prevent me spending too much cash). Is it a fun morning/afternoon thing or only fun in you live in the District? Is it just a big famer's market? What's up? In exchange, here's a tip for all the young foodies---Kim O'Donnel is doing a farmer's market tour at Arlington Courthouse Sat morning at 10. The Going Out Gurus: Reston, by metro, so easy: just hop off at Eastern Market, blue or orange line. I'd stop in in the a.m., grab a bite at Market Lunch and stroll around. There's much more than food -- although that's good too -- including art, furnishings, jewelry. So by all means go, but ditch the bf. He doesn't sound fun. -- Maura ________________________________________________ Adams Morgan Regular: Hey gurus, we spent Saturday night bar hopping and one stop was an awesome little lounge across from Habana Village--I thought it was called Mantis, but I can't find it on the Entertainment Guide or elsewhere on the web. So, what's the story with this place? Is it new? I had never heard of it or seen it before, but I'd recommend it in a second. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: AMR, both Tom Sietsema and I have visited (and written about) Mantis. It opened in April, and while I like the patio, I wasn't exactly blown away by the service or the cocktails. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ 20009: any way to get me the number of the "golden god?" The Going Out Gurus: All women loved him last night, so it must be widely available. ________________________________________________ Off the Beaten Tourist Trail, DC: National Arboretum -- not to be missed. The Going Out Gurus: Hear that, Ruby? ________________________________________________ Cleveland Park: Dear GoGs, I was thinking about taking July 7th off and driving to the beach (4 hours max.). I also want to cut the trip and spend the first night somewhere like Williamsburg. Is Williamsburg worth a visit? or do you have other suggestions? I never went to a beach in Va? Where should I go if I want to be at the beach but want to avoid a tacky boardwalk like the one in Rehoboth? The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) think Williamsburg is worth a visit. If you've never been, there's lots of stuff to see in the Colonial area. And if you've done that, this story gives you some other ideas about how to pass the time. As far as the beach goes, the obvious choice is Virginia Beach, though that might be too much on the tacky side for you. Another option is to visit a spot on the Virginia side of the Chesapeake, or maybe Chincoteague. They tend to be quieter spots, which sounds like what you're seeking. And for the record, I don't think the Rehoboth boardwalk is particularly tacky. The Ocean City boardwalk is much tackier in my book, but maybe that's just me. Hope you enjoy your trip. ________________________________________________ Glover Park, DC: Hey GoGs, Wanted to give you all the heads up that Bourbon (run by owners of Blue Room) on Wisconsin Ave. in Glover Park is supposedly opening up in 2 weeks. At least that's according to the the painter outside who let me take a look inside, looks pretty snazzy. And its supposed to be open til 3am. I'm wondering if they'll be a cover... Oh and Fritz, I finally tried the Deck. Had no idea that Wed. night was half-price sandwiches ($3.50) and half-price drinks. Great deal...now let's hope the rain goes away for good since its a nice outdoor patio. Happy Thursday!
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the Bourbon update. Sounds like it should be open in July. As for the Deck -- how was it when you were there? I've been by when there were dozens of people at the bar, but last time, there was, um, one person besides me and the bartender. But thanks for the happy hour update. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Peruvian beer: The Peruvian beer seeker might want to try some of the smaller marts in the Bailey's Crossroads area. There are 2 or 3 dive-y Peruvian restaurants on Columbia Pike there so the surrounding shops might carry it. And I know the Bestway hispanic mini-supermarket (corner of Gallows and Rt. 50 across from Loehmann's) carries a lot of beer from Central America. They might have South America too. The Westlawn IGA (corner of Annandale Rd. and Rt. 50) also has an unusual selection of beer, for such a stuck-in-the-1950s place. The Going Out Gurus: Nice work. Thanks for the great tips. ________________________________________________ Another U Streeter: The Clint Eastwood fest is called Hang 'em high and the link is here: http://www.cinemaonthecanal.com/ The Going Out Gurus: Cool -- thanks for sharing this. I'll make sure we get this on the site, too. -- Jen ________________________________________________ Secret "Spree" Members: Anthony Edwards (formally of ER) played bass, and Beck was in the chorus! Not to mention the Joe Cocker vibe of the lead singer. The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm, didn't see Beck. But let's thank Anthony Edwards for giving a shout out to the Smithsonian. ________________________________________________ Silver Spring, Md.: I gave our interns your Intern Guide with our orientation material. They seemed somewhat impressed, but not overwhelmed. Don't be offended. This is a hard to impress bunch. Some didn't find the Supreme Court visit I set up that inspiring. "Gosh, they are awfully old and they don't do much." I am like this is the Supreme Court! You might not think much of it, but it is not like I can take you to a higher court. This is it. Maybe if Rueben had shown up they would have liked it. Putting that aside. What else you got? We usually take a group to a Bowie Baysox game. Everybody generally has fun, but I don't know about this group. On the bright side they are extremely bright and working very hard. Pushed aside the Intern Guide to focus on the work-related outlines. But "its the freakin weekend I gonna have me some fun." Help me out. The Going Out Gurus: Well, did you ask them what they're looking for? The Interns' Guide / Young and Cashless feature was meant to be a jumping-off point, and a doorway for people to explore the rest of the entertainment guide. Take a quick survey and let us know, or send me an email (fritz.hahn at washingtonpost.com) and I'll try to help. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Reston, VA: Isn't there a market of some sort in Georgetown every weekend? Thanks! I love you guys! The Going Out Gurus: Yup. In the parking lot of the school across from Social Safeway. One of my favorite stands is the guy selling stylish greeting cards imported from England, $1 each. Also seen him at Eastern Market. -- Anne ________________________________________________ cusquena: if you are interesting in dining while drinking your cusquena, el chalan (20th and I) serves. The Going Out Gurus: more help. thanks. ________________________________________________ Fairfax, VA: Do you know where I can get some info on cultural/social events that the embassies put on for the general public? The Going Out Gurus: Fairfax, log in to embassy events and sign up for their e-mail list. Many embassies have their own newsletters as well. You could also check out some local happy hours with foregin flavor. But if any readers out there want to share, let's hear it. -- Maura ________________________________________________ Adams Morgan: Can you recommend a solid Mexican restaurant in the Dupont/Adams Morgan/Mt. Pleasant area not named Lauriol Plaza or Mixtec? I like both of those spots, just looking for something new. The Going Out Gurus: El Tamarindo for one. ________________________________________________ Bethesda, Md.: Hi GOGs: Any suggestions for the 4th of July weekend? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Here's some Fourth of July celebrations, for starters. What kinds of things are you looking for? ________________________________________________ Washington DC: Hi Gurus - I need help organizing a surprise birthday bash for my husband who was greatly disappointed that the Wolftrap ABBA night is already sold out. So I am planning an Abba Magic party at home. Any tips on where I can find the right costumes, decor, etc. Thanks!! The Going Out Gurus: Take a look at this story, a modified version of the retro Weekend piece I wrote that focuses just on shops. A number of these places -- like Meep's or Good Eye -- could be helpful as far as costumes and decor. Some of the owners are used to helping people with retro parties and would probably be happy to help. (One easy decorating idea: If your husband has any old Abba records, put them in record album frames and hang them up.) Good luck -- play "Waterloo" for me. -- Jen ________________________________________________ Washington: Hi gurus! I have three of us girls going out tonight--me, after a long week, a friend who is feeling a little under the weather, and a friend from out of town who will be worn out from chaperoning a week-long school trip of 7th and 8th graders (yikes!). But we all have a ton of dishing to do! Where can we go in the city that we can get drinks and dinner thats chill enough for talking, comfortable but fun? We were thinking Agua Ardiente, but havent heard too much about it. Ideas? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Agua Ardiente is worth a checking out, if only for a cocktail but I wouldn't recommend it for y'all tonight. They do serve shareable plates and have a few outside tables but if the skies open up a la last night, you're either in the no man's of the diningroom or the smokey fore of the bar area. Why not pick something more tranquil? I had dinner at Suski-Ko last night and it was delightful: gracious service, freshest food, pretty plates. You'd be welcome to stay and dish. It's not too pricy, especially if you're happy to tea it and not wine (lovely, careful list). Take Tom's word for it: the $3 for fresh wasabi is money well spent. Have you considered Cafe Divan, either Chef Geoff's or sweet Minh's (please don't be afraid to cross the bridge!)-- Kate ________________________________________________ RE: Trachenberg: Was the father really Rick Moranis? He seemed annoying enough to be. The Going Out Gurus: Moranis, definitely annoying. Jason Trachtenburg, never! ________________________________________________ Cheap Shots....: But the midnight showing would officially start at Midnight, Saturday the 14th, which is a horrible movie from the 80's. The Going Out Gurus: Picky picky. ________________________________________________ District: Gurus, Wassup?! Hey, what's going on tomorrow night? I want something fun that doesn't necessarily involve drinking or very much serious culture that will nonetheless provide yours truly with the opportunity to meet some nice, intelligent and pretty ladies. Also, how is Mousetrap, in your opinions? I humbly beseech you to share your wealth of wisdom! The Going Out Gurus: First things first: Don't ever say "Wassup" to a lady. Anyway, how about dancing? Sin Miedo, one of the finest salsa combos in the area, is starting a new gig in Georgetown tomorrow night. And the Artie Shaw Orchestra is at the Chevy Chase Ballroom. Plenty of dancing (including beginning lessons), and you can chat while you catch your breath. (Or there's always the burlesque show at the 9:30 Club.) As far as Mousetrap, if you love dancing to British rock (Blur, the Smiths, Pulp, Suede, etc.) with a smattering of electronic music and American inde, then it's the place to go. Plenty of ladies, too. This weekend is their fourth anniversary, so Mark's doing something right. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Silver Spring Eats....: To the poster who is eating in Silver Spring, try Cubano's or Mi Rancho. If you really must do Crisfield, go to the "real Crisfield's" which is on Georgia Avenue just over the DC line. Trust me on this one. The Going Out Gurus: Yes, that's what I (Jen) recommended earlier. The "real" Crisfield. Thanks for the suggestions. ________________________________________________ Market tour clarificiation: Kim O'Donnel will host the Market tour next Saturday the 21st, not this one. FInd more info on www.arlingtonfarmersmarket.com The Going Out Gurus: Thanks. Our pal Kim isn't here to correct us (we miss her so). By all means stop on by on the 21st. ________________________________________________ Takoma Park MD: Silver Theatre restaurants: "new" Crisfields seafood is visible from the theatre; Bombay Gaylord 2 blocks away, and several chain restaurants (Baja Fresh in the shops with Fresh Fields) and others in City Place. I will admit, that nearby Wheaton and Langley Park have the best array of restaurants. But give us some time, the theatre just re-opened! The Going Out Gurus: And more Silver Spring suggestions... thanks! ________________________________________________ RE: The Deck in Glover Park: Fritz, it was a bit sparse at first last night around 6 but starting picking up when we left around 8. The happy hour specials end at 7:30. The Going Out Gurus: Cool. I'll try going even later. Maybe that'll help (I think I was there around 7 on a Thursday?) -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Falls Church: Is there a listing of all the named Safeways? Ie social safeway? I've heard of a few, but never really known where any are.... The Going Out Gurus: Yes there is. Social is at 1855 Wisconsin. ________________________________________________ Reston, VA: This is my first time writing, but a loyal reader. Hope this makes it into the chat! Lately the chats have discussed places to go for an inexpensive mani/pedi, among other beauty services. Any suggestions on where to go for designs painted on the nails? A lot of places seem to advertise that as a service, but don't do a good job, or the girl that does the nail designs is "not working today". Thanks for the help!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Reston, Appreciate your loyalty. Try Nails for You. It's in Falls Church. ________________________________________________ Sore throat in Arlington: So I love the list of u-pick strawberry farms, but has anyone been yet? I want a personalized recommendation of a sweet sweet picking spot. The Going Out Gurus: Don't have one, I'm afraid. Anyone else have a fave? Why don't you call around for the best price? ________________________________________________ Adams Morgan: Not exactly a question, but for the reader looking for romantic locations, try the Little Fountain Cafe on 18th Street. It was mentioned in the article the reader referred to... Also, there are a gazillion interns at the Capitol Lounge on Thursdays and Fridays... The Going Out Gurus: Thanks on both counts. And good lord do the interns love the Red River Grill ... -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Georgetown: Do you know anything about a new club called "Air" that is opening up?? The Going Out Gurus: Yes. ________________________________________________ Arlington, Va.: You've probably covered this recently, but are there any good foreign film festivals in the works for this summer? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Actually, I don't think anyone's asked this recently. One to look out for is the Mali Film Fest, which is part of the Folklife Festival. Can't think of other specific ones off the top of my head right now, but if you're looking for foreign films generally, AFI screens them quite frequently, as does Visions. -- Jen ________________________________________________ Capitol Hill: When (and where) is the DC Carribean Carnival this year? I've heard that it is no longer on Georgia Avenue; true? The Going Out Gurus: 'Tis true, Cap Hill. This year the DC Caribbean Carnival has moved downtown to Pennsylvania Ave -- parade, concerts and all. Mark your calendar for June 28 and 29. -- Maura ________________________________________________ Petworth: Hey Gurus, I'm trying to make July 4th plans too. Do you know how bad security will be on the mall? ('Cause I don't want to go to the mall if it's like last year.) The Going Out Gurus: Security at the Capitol Fourth concert will be similar to last year -- gates open at 2:30 p.m. and there's two entry points with magnetic wand screenings and individual bag checks. Other security details for the Mall will come later. We'll let you know. -- Anne ________________________________________________ Glover Park, DC: Help! I know this isn't the proper forum, but the gurus would know. I need a nail place for my friend's wedding. Somewhere in the Tenleytown, Friendship Heights or Dupont area. Should be a nice place but ideally we're looking for somewhere that'll have a big communal space so we can all bond and chat before the wedding. Any ideas? We originally were thinking of Georgette Klinger but I think its too labrynth-like. I tried searching through The Post's Best Bets but all those places seem too spa-like. Or can you tell me how to do a search through all the Got Plans archives? THANKS! The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Glover Park, Hope I can rescue you. I'd try Serenity Day Spa. They've got a pretty large space. ________________________________________________ Reston, Va.: Hello Gurus, You guys are awesome. I was asked to go to an opera performed by college students somewhere in DC on Friday the 20th. Do you have any info on this? I'd like to know what I'm getting into before I agree to go. Thanks The Going Out Gurus: Looks like you'll be seeing "Barber of Seville" at Catholic. I've heard they put on some good shows, so it's probably worth seeing. If you go, let us know how it was. -- Jen ________________________________________________ DC: OK, please help me figure out this strange occurance...had two New York friends in town this weekend and wanted to take them to my new favorite hip bar Helix. Got there at 1:40 am and it was empty and they were vacuming! I know that's a bit late, but I've been there until 3am in the morning before...what gives? Any ideas? Was I way late or were they empty way early? The Going Out Gurus: Hey, D.C. I, too, have stopped by some of the Kimpton Hotels (Rouge, Topaz, Helix) only to find them closing early. It really depends on how crowded they are -- there's some rule about how many hours hotel bar/restaurants can be open in one week, and remember, all these places serve breakfast to their customers. (I've tried calling the manager at Helix but haven't gotten him yet.) -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Sin Miedo: Where in Georgetown will they be? The Going Out Gurus: Saveur. After 11 p.m. ________________________________________________ Embassy Happy Hours?: I remember in the early 90s that the British Embassy had a happy hour at their bar. Do they still do this? Do other embassies? The Going Out Gurus: Well, the British Embassy doesn't -- security reasons and all that, they say. Shame. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Washington, D.C.: Going out with a buddy after work Friday night in Georgetown. Both of us are 22 and have only recently been reintroduced into single life. Ideas on a good bar to meet girls in the same age range? The Going Out Gurus: In Georgetown? Third Edition or the dance party downstairs at the Guards ought to do the trick; you guys are a little young for McFadden's. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Washington, DC: Thanks for the answer on my Abba party! The Deck always looks empty when I go by too, but am glad to hear that a new bar is opening soon in the neighborhood. Although the Austin Grill does the trick for the moment with its yummy margaritas. The Going Out Gurus: Ah, the Austin Grill. And there's always the bar at Old Europe! ________________________________________________ DC:: Don't think your Safeway link answered the question. I can think of 3 "named" Safeways: Soviet Safeway - 17th & Corcoran, since the shelves are empty and the lines are long (less of a problem now that WFM is open). Also known as Gayway. Social Safeway - Wisc Ave, upper Georgetown, known for singles cruising the aisles. Secret Safeway - Town House at 20th & S, since it's tiny and hidden away from the main path, and isn't even a real Safeway. The Going Out Gurus: Oh, we thought you wanted the pharmacy hours. Attention Safeway seekers: please bookmark this page right now. ________________________________________________ DC: Gurus: I recall one of you are saying that she is Canadian. Can she give me any nightlife recommendations because I'm heading to Vancouver for a few days in July. I heard they are experimenting with leaving the bars open until 4am. The Going Out Gurus: Lucky you. You'll catch the city at its prettiest. For club kinda nightlife consider loungey Lotus in Gastown is good, Richard's on Richard's (known as Dick's on Dick's) is an oldie but goodie. I'm running out of time, but there's a small new hotel in Yaletown (I think) that's wowwing with a huge rooftop deck. Come back next week and I'll tell you -- will test my tired brain between now and then and give you the name and some other tips. Umm, snuck into Luv-A-Fair when I was 16 ... Sushi is a must and pub culture is HUGE. I say blow your per dium on a seaplane ride. Kate ________________________________________________ 22 in g-towne: young for mcfaddens? if it's anything like the cabo spring break dancing on the bar party i witnessed when it first opened (which lead me to flee in horror and plot the demise of the friend who promised me a "subdued hip irish bar from new york")they'll be in heaven. The Going Out Gurus: Yes, but guys have to be 23 to enter McFadden's. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Reader: Please move your ads a little more to the right, please. You're covering the chat text. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Sorry about the glitches today, folks. Now that the chat's over, the page looks fine. And the archived version will be pristine. See you next week. ________________________________________________ Places to Eat in Silver SPring: Cubano's (Cuban food) is another good place for food- it's about a block from the AFI. 1201 Fidler Lane Silver Spring, MD 20910 Phone: 301-563-4020 It's over by where the tastee diner is. The Going Out Gurus: Cool. As a former Silver Spring resident, I swear by the huge, greasy burgers at the Quarry House Tavern. Wonderful place for a beer. -- Fritz ________________________________________________ Automatically Update Page | Get New Responses | Submit Question
