Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, April 24, 2003; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

The discussion ended at 2:15. The transcript follows.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: We tossed the hyacinths long ago, but it's a battle of the pollen in here, people. You might say we're rehearsing our own reality play, "The Tale of the Allergists' Patients." Brave Fritz has downed 17 tissue boxes by now. But don't worry -- though our sinuses are clogged, our minds are as clear as today's sky. Fritz urges you to see former Congressman and NBA all-star Tom McMillen guest bartending for charity at Sports Club L.A. tonight, Kate and Maura like the Smithsonian Craft Show, Janet's dreaming of the beach, Jen's getting ready for the Bethesda Literary Festival and Alexa's brunch ideas will help you get a jump on the Mother's Day planning. I'm Anne, and I'll be parking myself at mucho FilmfestDC movies this weekend. What are you up to?

Bethesda, Md.: Four words for you: "Bend It Like Beckham."

The Going Out Gurus: Man, did you SEE that free kick last night? Amazing stuff. My favorite quote about last night's Man Utd-Real Madrid match comes from Allejandro Delmas of the Spanish daily AS: "When Sir Winston Churchill left us in 1965, he thought he had seen it all. He defeated Hitler - but he hadn't seen Marshall Zidane."

Oh yeah -- the film's cool, too. -- Fritz

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Need some birthday advice, oh wise gurus. It's a Tuesday night, starting around 9:00 and going late for a revolving group of about 30 people. Which would you choose: Bedrock Billiards, Buffalo Billiards, or Kokopooli? Or do you have any other great ideas? Something that won't break anyone's bank is key. (it doesn't have to be pool, but all those seem relaxed and allow for easy mingling)

Thanks! And of course all the gurus are invited.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Dupont. With a large group, you want to go with Buffalo. Bedrock is small -- although you could commandeer a few tables, and they have the small lounge area -- and Kokopooli is absolutely dead early in the week, although it's cheaper. But I think that if you want mingling and a comfortable spot that could hold 15-20 of your friends at a time, you should go Buffalo. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: what are the must sees of the DC Filmfest showings?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. There's a lot of good stuff at Filmfest this year. I (Jen) haven't seen any of these in advance, but the ones that jump out at me (based on early buzz and what I find compelling) are: "Bollywood/Hollywood" (screening Friday and Saturday); "Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary" (also screening Friday and Saturday at the Avalon, which looks great since its makeover); "11'9"01" (screening May 2 and 3); and the closing night film, "The Secret Lives of Dentists," which screens May 4 at the Lincoln Theater. I'm sure there are plenty of other gems in there, too, so make sure you take a look at the full schedule on Filmfest's Web site.

Washington, D.C.: Help! For the past few months I have regularly enjoyed the superb lattes and coffee at Murky Coffee in Georgetown (you know, the hole in the wall next to Kenneth Cole). This morning I was shocked to see a giant "for lease" sign in the window. Please tell me they're just relocating someplace else! Do you know what's up?

The Going Out Gurus: You and me both, Washington. I'm very concerned. The telephone number leads nowhere. I don't know what to do except send out a plea, in this forum, for coffeeboy Nick Cho to get in touch with me. I'd be awfully sad to see such a man go. -- Alexa

Washington, DC: I think you said last week you were planning on checking out the bar at the new Ritz in Georgetown. How was it? Any idea what the crowd would be like for a Thursday happy hour?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. I took a few friends over last Friday, and we love the place. Exposed brick, back-lit walls, silver leaf ceilings -- and that's just the bar. Great cocktail list, with purees and mint-infused vodka. HOWEVER, it's expensive. $12 a drink for the house cocktails. $16 for a cheese plate. But the immaculately attired folks smoking cigars at the bar probably weren't thinking about prices. We escaped into the gorgeous high-ceilinged lobby for table service.

You should go once, just to see the place. It looks stunning. But I'm not sure I'll be dropping in that often, unless I'm trying to impress a lady or something. -- Fritz

Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: Where is a good place to get makeup application lessons? I tried Aveda, but it was just a makeover designed to get me to buy products. No instruction at all.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Capitol Hill,

Janet here.

Did Aveda say that you would receive a lesson? Hmm. In any event, Andre Chreky at 1604 K St. NW has a 1-hour makeup lesson, which includes color analysis and application techniques for $125. Another possibility is the Trish Mc Evoy counter at either Saks Fifth Avenue or Nordstrom. I like their artists and their makeup. I'm not sure if they offer lessons per se, but you might call and ask. It's no secret that they would like you to buy their products, but you certainly are under no obligation to do so.

Several weeks before her wedding, a friend of mine had a makeup lesson at Bluemercury in Georgetown. I was there at the time and watched the whole process. She was very pleased with what she learned and was able to apply the makeup artist's tips when it came to the Big Day.

Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.

dc: Fritz, Where did you watch the Man Ud. game?

The Going Out Gurus: In the office. It was on ESPN2.

The Anti-Angelos: If you're a fan of baseball (or mediocrity), you'll no doubt be headed up to Baltimore soon to see the Orioles. Just wanted to remind you and your readers that the Post has very helpful articles on how to get to Camden Yards with out a car and where to drink once there.

Now, when do the Expos arrive?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we're very proud of our stories. Are you on our payroll?

NW DC: We'll be coming out of a black-tie party at about 11pm on Saturday and want to indulge our James Bond/Casablanca fantasies. Where can we go to order a shaken-not-stirred with a touch of class? (I was thinking of trying Degrees in the Georgetown Ritz Carlton, but they close at midnight, and I didn't want to have to rush to get there.)

The Going Out Gurus: If it's James Bond you're going for, I (Jen) suggest you try the International Bar, which serves plenty of martinis (including one called the Goldfinger) that might suit you. If you're looking for other retro ideas, check out tomorrow's Weekend. I wrote the cover story, which deals with that very subject. The piece will soon be up on the site, too.

Bethesda, MD: Im an NTN Trivia Addict and my favorite bar, Uncle Jeds got rid of it. Are there other bars around in Bethesda or DC that have it? Helpsoon! Im going through withdrawal!

The Going Out Gurus: When I was in school, Bethesda, we used to play it at the Santa Fe Cafe in College Park. I think they still have it. Here's a bigger list of where to play, thanks to the nice people at NTN. I think the Grand Slam downtown is really, really competitive. -- Fritz

Arlington Va: Hey GoGs love the chats. I was looking for someplace low key to take a date for dessert tonight. Is there anywhere in the Arl/Ros area that has great dessert. Ideally a coffee house or bookstore. Any thoughts?

The Going Out Gurus: I've always looked lovingly at the cakes the Courthouse Olsson's coffeeshop has. And it's a nice little place to settle in. If you didn't like that, there's always Cosi (snooze) across the street. -- Alexa

Arlington, VA: Any suggestions for places (bars, hang-outs, etc.)tonight and this weekend to meet a possible significant other? To seriously meet someone 'real' and someone you'd like to see seriously? (yes, we're still hopeful they're out there..) Also, has anyone you know tried any of these speeddating/hurry date DC events advertised in City Paper? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, Worry less about finding that s.o. and just have fun with your friends. Go some place you like and you might find someone to talk to who likes the same things, no? Sounds trite, but going out with an agenda is never any fun. As for speed dating, this might give you an idea. And as we scurry to pull together our Dating Guide, let us know what you think. -- Maura

yo yo yo: Baja Fresh or Chipotle?

The Going Out Gurus: Chipotle for their pork.

NOVA: Stupid question, but i'll ask: Is H&M only for women's clothes? haven't been to one but i keep hearing about it...

Oh, and I feel your pain about the allergies.
I'm about to declare my nose a "natural disaster area"...

The Going Out Gurus: The nose knows we're not its biggest fans, but H&M has mens and kids as well.

Washington, D.C.: First off, I want to say thank you for all the great advice. I've heard that there is a dinosaur dig going on south of Potomac Mills. Do any of you have more information on this?

The Going Out Gurus: Goodnessosaurus, WDC. I haven't heard of any such dino-dig, but that doesn't mean there's not one at hand. Can anyone help us out?

I do know that >Decatur House is holding an archeological dig very soon . (I want to know what's buried in Lafayette Square.) There are salamanders to be found in Rock Creek Park. Perhaps some nutty combination of the two might serve your prehistoric needs. You can feed and quench them here. -- Kate

Bethesda, Md.: I wanted to world to know that I ate at Jaleo for the first time over the weekend and I thought their food was amazing. We had gazpacho, calamari, stuffed peppers, some great salad, and mussels. The only downside is that this place doesn't take reservations. But if you go on a Monday or Tuesday night, they have flamenco (I think it's flamenco!?) dancers, so it's worth the wait!

The Going Out Gurus: Glad you had a good time, B. -- Alexa

Washington, DC: Hey! Does anybody know of a DC ultimate frisbee league?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Washington Area Frisbee Club is what you want.

Washington DC: Not so much a question, but a comment. I feel like the Nightwatch collumns that Fritz has done have been good, but not very diverse. I think that rather than just do stories about things (beer) or places (where's there are unusual beer or soccer), you could also include other things... like Eric Brace did. You know he didn't like Spank (or whatever that joint was) for himself, but knew that others might. He is a hard act to follow, but I know you have it in you! No more beer/soccer stories for a while! We get it!

The Going Out Gurus: I've never written about soccer for the Post, Washington. In the last two months, I've written about Bars near Camden Yards, the hip-hop MC battles and house nights at Five, Irish jam sessions at Nanny O'Brien's, Neo-soul and R&B nights at Juste Lounge, Prince DJs at Velvet Lounge (now at Modern), Rock en Espanol nights in Silver Spring and Lizard Lounge, the upscale gay night at MCCXXIII, in addition to the exotic beers at R.F.D. In tomomorrow's Weekend, I'm covering the Hill's swank new 201 Lounge and the outdoor jazz and blues happy hour at jordan's. I think that's a fairly diverse collection. But if you have suggestions for me, send them to fritz.hahn@washingtonpost.com. Thanks. -- Fritz

Dupont, Washington, DC: In case anyone is still interested, this webpage www.staticleap.com/chinatownbus/ has links to the sites of two Chinatown buses that run between DC-NYC. They also list sites for buslines that run between Philly-NYC-Boston. It's definitely a great deal but just remember to do your research. A quick google will show you articles relating near death or just annoying experiences on Chinatown buses. Now to my question: Has anyone been to Agua Ardiente yet for the food? I am mostly asking about food here because while I love Rosenfeld's lounges for the lounge, the food is how shall we say, not good, which is of course find for a place that focuses on the scene and alcohol, which is his forte. And so I am incredulous of his attempt at a food-focused place. Thanks for all your great info everyweek!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Dupont. Thanks for the information about Chinatown buses. As for Aqua Ardiente, a few of us have been, but no one's eaten. I like the sangria, though, as well as the Ardiente. The food at Chi-Cha's not bad, but like you said, it's all about the atmosphere.

Anyone eaten at Aqua Ardiente? Wanna share? -- Fritz

Falls Church: Dear exalted gurus My beloved and I were discussing bicycles and thinking that preparing for a “long-ride” event might be fun and healthy this summer. I don’t think our friends are rich enough to fund something like the “Tour de Friends,” but I was wondering what other long rides in the area you or the clicksters recommended. (We definitely will sign up for the Seagull Century). PS Also, can you recommend any place that rents “real” tandems for longer rides; affordability is always a plus. thanks, love the chat.

The Going Out Gurus: Are your friends rich enough for the MS Bike Tour on the weekend of May 17-18? You'd have to raise $250, and as I understand, there's a deal so that other riders could help pass their overflow cash on to you. You ride 30, 60 or 100 miles, from Great Meadow in The Plains to the Loudoun County Fairgrounds in Leesburg. -- Anne

Reston, Va.: This is so off topic, but I need your wisdom! I used to go to tanning beds, but no longer can for medical reasons (long story!). Do you have any recommendations for a. self tanners you can use at home that don't make you orange or, b. salons that professionally do this for you?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Good timing for this question, since it's one I've been investigating. The best self-tanner I've found is by Guerlain. It's called Terracotta Self-Tanning Fluid Spray, and you can get it at Neiman Marcus. I love the fact that you can spray it on. My colleague Maura is partial to Clinique's product, which she says is not smelly and doesn't stain or streak. Probably no self-tanner that you use at home is going to be as effective as a treatment at a salon, where they exfoliate, moisturize and then apply the product.
Try a place like Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon on Leesburg Pike in Vienna.

There was an article in Health magazine recently (March/April) about salons that specifically do self-tanning. If you can dig one up, that's another resource.

Good luck. Better to have a fake tan than one from a tanning bed or from the sun. By the way, you still need to use sunscreen when you have a fake tan.

Logan Circle, DC: What's the deal with the 1409 Playbill on 14th near The Studio Theater? It's near where I live and I'd like to have a decent place to grab a beer after work. Is it gay, for old drunks, theater crowd, locals? Not that I'm opposed to any of these, just want to be prepared.

The Going Out Gurus: The deal is dimly lit, fairly smokey, the actor are servers and vice versa. Playbill has a great jukebox and fairly good burger and clean silver ware. It's a bar. It's a restaurant. It has a ligitimately dingy New York City vibe. It is gay, for old drunks, theater crowd and locals. It makes no pretences. If you're looking for a joint where the staff will remember your name at happy hour and possibly store an extra set of your house keys, this could be your place. -- Kate

Tennis, anyone?: Hi...and thanks for your chats (helps keep me occupied at work!) With the nice weather approaching I was interested in taking tennis lessons somewhere around Bethesda, NW DC area (VA is ok too) (preferably in a group....and if i can get picky, then say people in their 20s...) Do you know any places that offer lessons (and don't require you to be a member of a club or health center? ) Also, do you know of any tennis leagues that are looking for players? Thanks!!

The Going Out Gurus: Many private clubs -- Kenwood in Bethesda for one -- offer lessons to non-members, but you can also take lessons in Rock Creek Park and Hains Point. Local rec centers and YMCA's in the 'burbs are also good bets. Any readers with ideas? Your serve. -- Maura

Washington, D.C.: Have to submit early, but any shot Fritz or someone knows a bar that has mechanical bull riding. There used to be a place in Baltimore, but I called and they don;t have it any more. A friend insists he can stay on for 8 seconds, and I have to see him fall. Preferably one near a hospital, knowing him. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, you're thinking of Cancun Cantina, up by BWI, right? They have a mechanical bull, but they told me that it's only available during the summer, for some reason. Other than that, there's not much around. Kate rode one at a Wyoming State Society party once, so you might want to check for those kinds of special events. -- Fritz

Speaking Of Baseball: If you are truly Anti-Angelos, then what you should do is support the Bowie Baysox! If you live in the city, it's a total breeze to get there. The games are cheap (though the concessions are the same price as the bigs, though I don't know why), the stadium is nice, the parking is free, and there's even a cute playground for the older types (like me) who take their little kids. Oh, and plus, the Baysox are in first place. Even though they are an affiliate of the O's, I am pretty sure Peter A. doesn't have his evil hands involved in the team.

The Going Out Gurus: Agreed. There's a lot of love in those bleachers. -- Kate

Washington, DC: Gurus:

I was the one to ask about pubs for my ex-pat friends last week. Thank you and your audience for all of the good suggestions. I believe we're trying one on Saturday night.

The Going Out Gurus: Cool. Which one?

Alexandria, Va.: Okay, so my favorite type of food in the whole world is Indian, and I've tried a number of places in the D.C. area, but I still haven't found any place that blows me away. So I though I'd take an informal poll and ask the All Wise and Powerful Gurus, what's your favorite Indian place around here? Also, if I wanted to try and make some at home, where can I buy ingredients?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Alexandria. We are big fans too. First of all, for spices and an all-round good time go to Indian Spices and Gifts (formerly known as Indian Spice and Appliance, which I liked better). It's a hilarious place. Asafeteida and cumin downstairs, suitcases and curling irons up. Or, order online from Penzey's (http://www.penzeys.com/) for what I hear is some of the the best and freshest stuff around. As for local Indian eats, I'd point you towards any of these: Bukkhara (Glebe Rd. Arlington), Bombay Curry Co. (Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria), Heritage India , Bombay Club (downtown), the new Indique (Cleveland Park). -- Alexa

Dupont Circle, DC: Hey Gurus! Quick question: Do you know of any bars, clubs, lounges that serve martinis with bleu cheese stuffed olives? Had one of these in New York recently and was looking for one down here.

The Going Out Gurus: Dupont: Walk up New Hampshire Avenue until you hit the Hotel Helix. Go in to the bar and ask for the Junipertini: a classic gin martini with three large, blue-cheese-stuffed olives. Delicious. -- Fritz

Falls Church: To the long-distance cyclists: if you have a mountain bike or hybrid, why not cycle the C&O Canal? You can get the details on the website(http://bikewashington.org/canal)and can do all or a portion of the 180 mile treasure we have right in our own backyard!

The Going Out Gurus: Great idea, Falls Church. Just remember that you'll need to portage a bit near Georgetown. Some of the bits of the canal require detours for renovations this spring.

Dupont: Is Vegas Lounge still open? Went there on a Friday night a few months ago, to find the doors locked!

The Going Out Gurus: New Vegas Lounge closed, Dupont. That whole block is being redeveloped. This summer, you'll find a new restaurant/bar there called the Logan Tavern, which is being opened by the guy who runs Grillfish. He's promising an outdoor patio and a casual American menu. -- Fritz

Reston, Va.: Hi, Gurus... it's my first time, so I hope you get this. I travel to Baltimore every other weekend, with three boys (9, 8, and 4 1/2). We've done just about everything, from rollerskating, parks, movies, zoos, etc. Going to the museums do get expensive with the boys. Any ideas for inexpensive outings on a Saturday for three very energetic boys? Thanks in advance!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Reston. Don't miss the Kinetic Sculpture Race this Saturday. Sponsored by the American Visionary Art Museum, it's quite a trip. And just across the Harbor, the boys might enjoy this weekend's Waterfront Festival. Both events are free. Have fun. -- Maura

Arlington-Rosslyn dessert: No contest - go to Tivoli for dessert. Right above the Metro.

The Going Out Gurus: Oh yes. That's a good idea.

Arlington, VA: Tennis options: Try Arlington County Parks and Recreation

www.co.arlington.va.us/prcr

Tennis lessons for all ages!

The Going Out Gurus: Excellent. Thanks, Arlington.

Movie Fan: Hey Gurus,

Any word on any big opening parties for either the new "X-Men" movie or "Matrix: Reloaded?" And any idea where they might be playing opening weekends?

The Going Out Gurus: We got two questions that asked this exact question, so I'm going to answer this one for both of you.
I (Jen) begin my answer with shocking news: "The Matrix: Reloaded" will not screen at the Uptown. Please try to stay calm and remain seated, people. I just talked to a nice woman at the Uptown, who tells me "X-2" will screen there starting next Friday, and that advance tickets for it will start selling tomorrow. So far, I can also tell you that "X-2" will screen at AMC Potomac Mills, UA Bethesda, UA Snowden Square, AMC Union Station, AMC Courthouse, AMC Academy 8, AMC Rivertowne, City Place, Springfield Mall, Hoffman Center, and Regal Rockville. We'll continue getting more showtimes in the coming days. BTW, I caught "X-2" earlier this week, and I think people who liked "X-Men," for the most part, will like this one. It drags a bit, and the plot is overly convuluted, but there are a couple of good fight scenes and Hugh Jackman is a total stallion. He was definitely the best part of the movie.

Now, "The Matrix." I know, it's a bummer that it isn't coming to the Uptown. So far, I know it will screen at Wisconsin Ave. (it looks like the first day is already completely sold out), Regal Ballston, Regal Rockville, Loews Rio, Loews Fairfax and a couple of others. The opening's still a month away, so more showtimes will be pouring in. It also appears that at least some theaters will start screening "Matrix" on Wednesday night, May 14, the night before it officially opens. That's all the news that's fit to print right now, but don't worry, we'll keep you up-to-date.

Chevy Chase, MD: speaking of sports lessons... are there any places that you would recommened for CHEAPER golf lessons. I just need to know how to hold the club!

The Going Out Gurus: Chevy Chase, again Hains Point and Rock Creek seem to run cheaper.

Fairfax, VA: Hey guys!

Was wondering if you had any ideas for a Japanese Steakhouse for a group of four? We've already done Benihana and Edoya - Anything else worth trying out there?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: There's one in North Old Town that isn't bad. I think it's called Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse. It's on the river, tucked at the bottom of an office block. Canal Center Plaza, I think it is. -- Alexa

Former Tennis Captain: Hands down, the best tennis instruction I know of is at Georgetown Prep, on Rockville Pike. The company that runs it is called Service Line, run by John and Sue - and they are the best. When I worked in Chicago, an instructor had heard of them. I'd call the prep school for the tennis bubble number

The Going Out Gurus: Oh yes, a lot of prep schools offer lessons too. Give your nearest one a call.

Alexandria, Va.: What is the scene like on a Friday night at Ortanique? I've been there once for a happy hour during the week and loved the atmosphere -- now I'm organizing a night out for a friend's birthday and Ortanique is a strong possiblity. How is the music on a Friday night? Is there dancing? I'm looking for a place that's a little sophisticated, but fun and festive, not stuffy. Is it too crowded for a group of 20-25 (not necessarly all arriving together but looking to meet up there)?

The Going Out Gurus: Friday night at Ortanique is salsa night, with Carlos Bareto and Combo Del Sol. They play different styles of music, and it's a lot of fun, even if the dancefloor is on the small side. Great rum cocktails. Fun crowd with experienced salseros. You should check it out. -- Fritz

Ballston, VA: Taking one for the team: I stopped at the pizza-by-the-slice place across from the Ballston metro to check it out after last week's question. Nothing special to report - sauce, crust both as generic as could be. Not bad, would probably be delicious at 2 a.m. if one had been drinking (Pizza Mart, anyone?) Anyway, the menu includes a bunch of pasta and other pizza-type stuff, but I'd say for a slice, it wouldn't be worth a special trip even from Court House.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for doing our work for us Ballston.

Re: Dessert in Arl/Ros: I can't believe you didn't mention Common Grounds.... you can at least get dessert COFFEE there.... and I think if it's a date then you're more interseted in the sitting and talking part, rather than whether there is coffee or cake in front of you.

The Going Out Gurus: I can't believe me either.

H&M: Sorry...I know we've all been through this a few weeks ago, but when is the H&M store opening downtown....I don't feel like searching the acrchives!

The Going Out Gurus: This is what we call ... lazy.

Washington DC: This chat is frustrating, as it has become most of these days... it's all about each guru's particular interests. This used to be fun. Now zzzzzzz or change the channel!

The Going Out Gurus: Oh, but I'm interested in you, Washington, Let's hear more.

Godfather Virgin: As I continue to work my way through the trilogy -- My friend wants to go to the screening of "Godfather 2" in Silver Spring this weekend. Do you have any details about this event? Do you need to be an AFI member? Should we get there early? Is the popcorn worth the trip?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we've got the skinny on "Godfather 2" and the first "Godfather." By all means, go. You don't have to be an AFI member to go to the Silver Theatre, but if you are, you'll get a discount on your ticket price. Otherwise, you'll just pay the $8.50 admission price, which is worth it to see "Godfather" on a big screen. (And my money's where my mouth is, because I'm seeing "The Godfather" there tomorrow night.) Lastly, I've sampled the AFI's popcorn, and it's pretty good. But the experience of the place is what's worth the trip. So have a good time, and report back on how you liked it. -- Jen

Arlington....: It'll be tough to match what a great weekend it was entertainment-wise here last weekend - Yo La Tengo, The Flaming Lips (still in awe of that show... my god.), so rather than trying to compete, trying to find a cool bar to hang at tomorrow night just for drinks, perhaps migling, no big deal. On that same note - and not to sound uncharacteristically dizzy, but you could not swing a cat in either of those shows, esp the Lips, without hitting a cute guy. Where on earth on these fellas every other night? It temporarily restored my faith in finding an offbeat, intellectual (though you can't judge a book, but given their choice of music...) guy of my own here in D.C.

So - where to hang out tomorrow night, perhaps with another early-30s gal in tow, for some chill drinks and (hopefully!) some witty banter?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm with you Arlington, especially that opera in a pinata swinging from the happiest place on earth that was the Flaming Lips show. And I noticed it too: the Lips' audience was an army of cute (and obviously smart with great musical taste) off-beat fellows.

In terms of where to find at least a pair of these sweet weirdos, I'd say they might be found saying goodbyes at Visions. Tonight there's the last Cinemusic. Filmfest DC should bring them out too. And as you've proved your Sunday night metal: head to Cafe Saint Ex at 11 p.m. when Arab Strap will DJ following their straight up and paid gig opening for Bright Eyes at the 9:30.

But you needed something for Friday: Panic is ending and tomorrow night is the last so it could be crowded (with adorable oddballs, but Panic skews a little young ...). Have you checked out Lemur Lounge in Alexandria? The new Continental? Not that your old standby might not hold the answer all along. -- Kate

Washington, DC: Old Ebbitt Grill also does very tasty martinis with bleu cheese stuffed olives.

The Going Out Gurus: Cheers

Glover Park: How are the hotel bars (Helix, Topaz, etc) and/or WP International bar on Saturday nights? Any specials?

The Going Out Gurus: No specials on Saturdays, Glover Park, although all three have deals during the week. I just got new happy hour listings for Helix, Topaz and Rouge, which should be up soon. Topaz now has $4 drinks and food specials from 5 to 7, Helix has half-price burgers and beer daily from 5-7, and disco DJs and ding-dongtinis on Thursdays.

They all draw good crowds on weekends, though, although Topaz and Rouge get more slammed than, say, Helix or 15 Ria. -- Fritz

College Park, Md.: In last week's chat, mention was made that you had Cadbury chocolate from England. On the bottom of the 12 pack of mini-caramel aggs I bought at Target it says Made in England for Hershey's Foods. Is there a difference between these and other Cadbury eggs from England.

Thanks,

Curious

The Going Out Gurus: Somehow, they always seem fresher. I don't know what relationship there is between Cadbury and Hershey. All I know that I've just had a fresh batch of Cadbury's Chocolate Buttons arrive in the mail, and I am laughin'. -- Alexa

Manassas, Va.: Hello all. You guys rock.

I just moved to Manassas and want to know where the wild/cool things are... any ideas? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: What's wild and cool to you? Manassas is home to the National Battlefield Park, good for rambling. As for libations, can anyone suggest a non-chain? Last time I was there, Sweetwater Tavern seemed a big gathering place.

Reston,VA: Any opinion/reviews of Honolulu's off Telegraph Rd. in Alexandria? thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: I love Honolulu. I had my birthday there a few years back. Coolest, tackiest tiki bar in the area, and the best tropical drinks; Bartender David Chan was the head bartender at the old downtown Trader Vic's. You won't be disappointed -- and you can even keep the tiki mug when you're through. -- Fritz

Style and fitness questions: Style: Going to a DC area wedding as a guest in May. Is it OK to wear a pale grey pashmina scarf as a cover-up for the 4 PM wedding and evening reception? If the dress is pale blue/light gray, are white sandals OK?

Also, I am training for a 10K in the summer and would like to find a running partner. Unfortunately, the running club meetings in the area don't jive with my work schedule. Is there forum where I can find advertise to find a running partner?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, DC wedding guest:

Your pale pashmina is a fine coverup for the occasion. As for the white sandals, it depends. What material are they, how high and are they delicate enough to balance the dress?
My suggestion would be the strappier and lighter looking the better.

As for the running partner search, try Road Runners Club of America.

Washington, D.C.: Not sure if this is the kind of question you answer or not but I'm looking for a gym to join. I live in Woodley Park and work by the Courthouse Metro stop in Arlington so prefer something near there. I dont need anything fancy and dont want to pay too too much.
Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Washington. Near Courthouse you have Gold's Gym in Rosslyn and Clarendon. From Woodley, your best bets might be the Washington Sports Club north of Dupont or City Fitness in Cleveland Park. There's also the Sport and Health at the Hilton, but keep in mind you'll have to fight off Kate for that machine. -- Maura

Re: Self Tanner: No personal experience with these but for what it is worth:

Nora at Blue Mercury in Georgetown does a self tanner application using Darphin (wonderful but insanely expensive products). It's pricey, something like $100, but she exfoliates first. While I have not had this done, I go to Nora often for waxing and she is wonderful.

I have also heard about Hollywood Tanning (I think) that has a booth that mists self tanner on you. No idea of cost.

Happy tanning!

The Going Out Gurus: Thank for the self-tanning input. FYI to all you would-be self-tanners. Exfoliation first is a must.

Arlington, Va.: I'm hoping to throw a party next month and am having a hard time finding a bar that will rent a room and allow music (I've got a DJ already) on the cheap. Thanks to the IRS I'm nearly broke, so am hoping for a cheap (free?) room and a cash bar option, light food. I've tried calling private halls, but most have either music or alcohol restrictions. The only resturant I've found close to meeting my requirements is the Childe Harold, but they'll only let me use their own DJ. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington: Call Chief Ike's. If you give them enough notice, you can have your own DJ in the Cosmo Light Lounge upstairs. It's "free," but you and your friends will have to spend a certain amount on beer and alcohol to keep the club for yourselves. -- Fritz

re: Cadbury chocolates: Go to the brit shop in clarendon, and get yourself a crunchie bar. golden honeycomb covered in Cadbury's chocolate.

sooogood

The Going Out Gurus: Yes indeedy.

Indian Food in Alexandria: I have to recommend "Dishes of India" in the big plaza on Belle View Blvd. It's fan-bloody-tastic!

The Going Out Gurus: More Indian suggestions...

McLean,VA: I love the chat and was hoping someone could give me a heads up on the happy hour tonight at Clarendon Ballroom. Also, I heard there is cover after 8pm; is that true, and if so, do you know how much?

The Going Out Gurus: Mr. Greengenes is performing live. Not sure about specials, but it's $7 after 8.

Indian food: Tiffin and Udupi Palace are both fantastic. Udupi is southern Indian vegetarian, and Tiffin is a new place next door with a broader range and meat. Both are on University Blvd near New Hampshire - not the prettiest neighborhood but everyone I've been with agrees its the best Indian food you can get in the area.

The Going Out Gurus: And more...

For the tanning question - solution!: The way to go these days is with the new Mystic Tan system. You stand in a booth and it sprays you! (see last month's Lucky Magazine for more details and other tanning recs)

Go to http://www.mystictan.com for locations - several in and around DC

--- Ballston

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Ballston. I have read about the Mystic Tan system. Have you actually tried it?

Japanese: I don't know if it's a steak house, but Japan Inn in Georgetown (on Wisconsin) is a great place where they cook the food right on your table. And they have nice warm saki.

The Going Out Gurus: How helpful you all are today.

Tanning: Have y'all heard of that new "thing" they do at salons, where they spray you with the tanning stuff in a booth that is similar to the ones you stand in for regular tanning sessions? Apparnetly you're done in 60 seconds and it lasts for a few weeks.

My mom still tells me I should keep my "magnolia white" skin away from any tanning.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we have heard about the self-tanning spraying booths, courtesy of Mystic Tan. But I haven't heard of anyone who has actually experienced it yet.

Listen to your mom.

Washington, DC: Can you recommend good both music and poetry open mics in Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle areas(although I guess I remain open to other neighborhoods..)
Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Are you up for a trip to Bethesda? This weekend is the Bethesda Literary Festival. Closer to home, there's poetry at Chapters when Carolyn Forche reads on May 3. But that's too long a wait. I've not yet made it to U Turn on a Tuesday for Home Schooling, but it sounds cool, no? And tonight, there's open mike at Kaffa House. I have been and the crowd is warm. Check it. -- Kate

Arlington, VA: Will DC Sessions or Screen on the Green be back this summer? Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Darn, I (Jen) had promised an answer to the Screen on the Green question for this week. Unfortunately, I don't have one yet. Just made a few calls to try to figure out what's happening, and so far I can't find anyone who even knows what Screen on the Green is. I'll keep trying and can hopefully tell you something soon.

Arlington, VA: Another self-tanning option is "Mystic Tan" booths. I know some of the tanning salons in Vienna and Centerville have them. It is about $15-$25 a session, and you step into a little shower stall and it sprays the self-tanner all over you from all sides. It is great. It is a much more even application than I can achieve on my own, and it is cheaper than EA or Aveda where they exfoliate you first and then hand apply the lotion to the tune of about $100.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the input, Arlington.

Re: Manassas bars: Okra's in Old Town is pretty cool, and there are a couple other places around that area which are decent.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the ideas!

DC: Regarding the tanning question... This month's Allure magazine lists good places to get bottled/sprayed tans applied for the DC area and just about anywhere in the country.

The Going Out Gurus: More on tanning from DC ...

Somewhere, USA: Gurus--

I love today's chat. What does that person expect? Unbaised material--hello, what would we have if you just listed every option in the book? Oh yeah, a search engine. Sure, I may never self-tan (seen too many scary self-tanners) or drink a martini (gross) with bleu-cheese stuffed olives (eeeee), but I like knowing where I could if I so desired. Rock on guys. As an aside--to the AFI person. Get there early, esp if G2 is in a smaller theater. The lines for seats (once you are in with your ticket) form quickly based on my experience there!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for your support. And thanks, too, for that AFI tip. Getting anywhere early, especially movie theaters, is almost always a smart move.

Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.: I heard about a place that is about to open/recently opened in Adams Morgan, called L'enfant, located in the same spot where Franklins was (18th and just
above Florida Ave.). What can you tell us about it?

Also, have you been to Continental in Rosslyn, what's that like?

The Going Out Gurus: L'Enfant just opened, Cleveland Park, so no one's been in yet. A friend who went to the private pre-opening party had nothing but good things to say about this little corner bistro and wine bar. I hope to check it out this weekend.

As for Continental, I love it. Gorgeous retro '50s/'60s design by the folks from Good Eye. Two cool, glittering bars. Nine pool tables that glow a deep blue and purple. The chef is from Jaleo and created a tapas menu -- certainly not what you expect from a pool hall. But Continental is owned by the folks who run Buffalo Billiards, Bedrock, Atomic, Aroma and the two CarPools, so you know it will be great. -- Fritz

Arlington, VA: For the person looking for a make-up lesson, I second the motion for "Trish McEvoy". I had a make-up artist at the Trish McEvoy counter at Neiman Marcus give me a great lesson. She was particularly concerned with making sure I could replicate the look at home, so after she had "done" one eye for me, she had me do the other one myself so she could make sure I understood everything she had taught me. She was awesome. Her name is Shar-Lin.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Arlington.

Arlington: Why is Whitey's in arlington closed? Will it be reopening?

The Going Out Gurus: It closed for tax reasons. The owner was looking for a buyer to keep it open, and the building's going to be auctioned. I'd like to see it stay open, but you never know. -- Fritz

Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: Since coming to D.C., my social life has consisted of Irish pubs and sports bars.

Help! Need suggestions for an upscale evening of drinks and dinner. Perhaps two suggestions -- a trendy place and a "not-to-be-missed-in-D.C. place."

Him: looking super GQ. Me: Little black dress with lots of leg showing.

The Going Out Gurus: Don't worry Capitol Hill, there's more for you than pubs and sports bars. Stop for drinks Savino's or Tabard Inn then settle in at nearby Nora or Obelisk for dinner. Enjoy. -- Maura

Arlington: Question for Philly folks: I might be giving a baby shower in Philadelphia this summer. I'm not all that familiar with the area, so could the Gurus or any chatters recommend a place to host it that will make me look cool and knowledgable of the Phillly scene? Most of the guests will be out-of- towners, except for the mother-to-be, and it might appear rude if I ask her to host it in her own house! Help me out! Haven't thought beyond location in terms of theme, style, etc.

The Going Out Gurus: Here's what you do, Arlington. Work with the dad-to-be. Get someone to take the mom out for lunch or a treat, while the other guests come in and set up. When she comes back to her own place, she'll be surprised.

re: Matrix at the IMAX: Did you gurus hear yesterdays news? The Matrix Reloaded will be opening on IMAX two weeks after it's May 15th regular theater opening. And when the third movie comes out (Matrix Revolutions) it'll open in IMAX theaters on opening day. So even though the uptown's not showing it, you can still catch it on the huge screen.

The Going Out Gurus: No, I did not hear this. That's very cool. Please e-mail me and tell me where you got this info. I want to make sure we get details about this on the site. Thanks! See, we gurus can't do this alone. -- Jen

arlington, va: Gurus- I wanna check out the Polish Happy Hour tomorrow night at Vida. what's Vida like, how dressy? What should I expect as far as the scene (how it would be any other night, if it wasn't for the Polish element).

The Going Out Gurus: Dressy casual is fine, Arlington. The scene is lounge-centric, so you should look nice. Vida, changes with whatever crowd/DJ is in, but there's plenty of cocktail-sipping going on (especially mojitos, last time I was in). -- Fritz

Murky Coffee: They just opened a new one at Eastern Market, at 7th and PA SE. I didn't know they were closing the Georgetown one though.

The Going Out Gurus: It's all clear now, Murky.

Reston: My friend tried to buy tix for The Godfather showing tomorrow night and the Web site said they were sold out.

Just a note

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip. Sounds like it will be crowded, kids.

Running Partner Question Answered: For the outta towner coming to a DC wedding and training for a 10K... a great resource for running partners is the RunWashington mailing list hosted on YahooGroups -- runwashington-yahoogroups.com.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, and another option is to contact a local running club -- many in the area offer a partner-matching service.

For the person looking for a party room...: Try Garretts in Georgetown. Their party rooms are free, except for $50 per bartender. Can do cash bar and they have good apps. As for bring-your-own-DJ, not sure, but they do have a jukebox!

The Going Out Gurus: They don't do guest DJs, though.

Courthouse: I'm visiting from out of town and staying in the courthouse area of Arlington. Any good ideas for a Sunday brunch? A local friend recommended Carlyle Grand Cafe, but his judgment is somewhat suspect. Is he right this time? I've actually heard the place is pretty good.

The Going Out Gurus: Just near Courthouse, we love Village Bistro, but Carlyle Grand is tasty as well. -- Maura

Arlington, VA: Hi there, My significant other will be taking the MCAT this Saturday, ending several weeks of stress. I want to do something fun to celebrate on Saturday. Any ideas? He's thinking of checking out "Two Towers" at Arlington Cinema and Draft House (his theory: he'll be too tired to do something else), but COME ON! He's already seen it something like 5 times. Can you think of something that would top yet another screening of "The TT" or should I just go, sit back, get a pitcher, and enjoy the show? (I've seen it only once).

The Going Out Gurus: If you've only seen it once ...
We can fix this. Why don't you book him a massage? Taking the MCAT is wildly stressful. We Gurus sit it every six months. At Salon Ceilo in Pentagon City a hlf-hour session is $50 and a hour is $80.

If he'd rather stare at a big screen, what about FilmFest DC? On Saturday night they're showing "Come Drink with Me" -- it's the 1966 kung fu classic that informs all the hi-yah highwire-jinx in "The Matrix." He'd be way stoked, and you'd be the greatest girlfriend. Good luck.-- Kate

Arlington, Va.: Where is the best place in D.C. for a Friday happy hour? A bunch of us are planning a girls night out and just looking to have a good time!

The Going Out Gurus: Try the open bar at MCCXXIII, Arlington. All the exotic cocktails you care to drink -- including name-brand liquor -- for $15. You really can't beat that.

ballston re: mystic tan: Haven't tried it yet, but I am all pumped up to do so. I have friends who have and are very pleased with the result. You have to apply some kind of blocking gunk to your fingernails and toenails so they don't yellow, and I hear it looks best after you've showered once (after the appropriate drying time, of course). At about $20-30, I am game. Apparently it lasts a week or two. I think I am going to try the location near Dupont, and I'll post the result here if anyone's interested.

I just have no luck with at-home tanners. I can't even apply nail polish without making a mess!

The Going Out Gurus: You must tell us all about it. Good luck with the gunk.

Hmmm: I know I may be shot to hell for this question, but is there anyway that you all would ever post a picture of yourself like the other online chat hosts do. Largely out of curiousity more than anything. I'd also like to put a face to the advice. We all know what Eric Brace looks like, so I can't believe there is a need for a Tom Sietsman like anonymity.

The Going Out Gurus: You really don't want us to do that. Really.

Washington, DC: Does anyone suggest places to go out on a Sunday night? I'm going out around 10 to meet a date for drinks.

The Going Out Gurus: DJ Betamax, the '70s-and-'80s DJ who used to do Sunday nights at Aroma, is now spinning ska, punk and new wave at the Reef on Sunday nights.

Sunday suggestions?

H&M: Gurus, you were right! I made a special trip out to Potomac Mills just to check it out...what a let down! I was expecting nice clothes at a great price. Great prices, they did have...but more of a Forever 21/Wet Seal/etc. clothes selection...better for the HS crowd. Should always listen to my gurus!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the report!

Glover Park,DC: Hi, I'm going to Clarendon grill tonight and I was wondering what the consensus is on the place. I've heard mixed reviews, from a big room with liitle vibe to a cool spot to dance and have a few drinks. Any comments?

The Going Out Gurus: Glover, it's fine, if you don't mind a bit of crowding and a slight meetmarket vibe. The Grill has good beers, dancing to local bands and a good-sized back patio. It gets full of 20-and-30-somethings, though, many of which seem to be on the prowl. -- Fritz

Arlington, VA: Hey Gurus! I love your chats, they are ALWAYS so helpful. I have a couple of questions I hope you can help me with.
First off, I want to take my mother, who's 45, out on saturday night, perhaps a place with Jazz and kind of hip too, but where neither of us would feel out of place.
Second, I need to take her shopping for a formal dress, but all I can find in department stores are dresses for grandma or proms-If anyone has any suggestions for a place to buy a formal dress I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: What about HR-47 or Twins? Everyone is welcome there.

For formal wear: Saks: Off the Rack at the Leesburg outlets is a good choice. As is Saks in Chevy Chase (duh, way pricier). People, help us out here. -- Kate

Rockville, Md: I asked Tom Sietsma this ? yesterday but he ignored me. Can you suggest a good B-day place in Bethesda in rockville. There will be 6 of us, and needs to have veggie or fish options-thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: In Bethesda: Thyme Square, Cafe Deluxe, Grapeseed, Green Papya or Red Tomato. I'm not sure what Persimmon offers for vegetarians, but Cafe Bethesda should please all considered if you're willing to splurge. -- Maura

Washington, DC: Hi GOGs,

For those who are looking to head out tonight the Blue Room on 18th St. in Adams Morgan is having a a special CD release party and guest DJ. But more importantly, all proceeds collected at the door will go to benefit the Tour de Friends AIDS ride route from NC to DC and Food & Friends, an alliance for AIDS Services and Fam Free Clinic. These organizations reach
out to people and families infected with HIV/AIDS and provide greatly needed services such as nutritional counseling, prevention and awareness, and HIV care and support.

So head over there - the cover charge will go to a really worthy cause.

The Going Out Gurus: A plug for charity ...

20011: We like each guru having particular interests. It means they have a wide range of experience and expertise to share with us.

The Going Out Gurus: And that's exactly how we feel about you. Thanks again for a wonderful time, guys. And have a happy Arbor Day tomorrow.
