Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Fritz is looking as cute as we've ever seen him today, everyone. We kind of wish you were here to see him, and share in the bounty of his Easter basket. We've got the a/c cranked so he doesn't get too hot in there, but forgive him, please, if he's a bit clumsy on the keys. We had the judging of the bonnets earlier this morning. Joe won. And deserved to. He really worked hard on his and looks so nice in it. So that's our news. Tell us what's going on with you. We're all here (Maura, Kate, Fritz, Joe, Anne, Jen and me, Alexa) and we're all -- should we say -- ears.
Dupont, Washington, D.C.:
Twist on the oft-asked hair question. I know one of you Gurus goes to Bang Salon on U Street and loves it -- can you recommend someone there? Color too?
The Going Out Gurus: Sure can, Dupont. This is Kate and I go to Damien for my cuts. I haven't been there for color but the prices are right. -- Kate
This should be an easy one:
Looking for a cheap (ha!) brunch in Bethesda near Landmark Theaters for Sunday morning.
The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, Austin Grill might be your best bet. Two more: Levante's or Jaleo. -- Maura
Dunkirk, Md.:
Right now, "A Mighty Wind" is only in two D.C.-area theaters. Do you expect a wider release in the near future?
The Going Out Gurus: What you talkin' 'bout, Dunkirk? "A Mighty Wind" is in nine theaters right now. I'm not sure if it will roll out wider than that, but it's possible. Don't know if any of these theaters is near you, but hopefully you can catch the flick somewhere. It's good for some giggles.
Massachusetts Avenue, Washington, D.C.:
GOGs, if you had to vote for the following awards what would you choose:
-Most Improved Nightspot (meaning improved over the past three years)
-Most Over-rated Nightspot
-Best Nightspot to Make Out In (not where to find people to hook up with, but rather to bring along an SO for some clandestine snogging)
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Mass Ave. Good question, but a quick plug first: Starting April 28, everyone will get to vote for their favorite nightspots (and restaurants, and shops, and museums, and so on) in our annual Best Bets contest. Stay tuned for more details.
Now, back to your question:
Most improved: Five.
Most overrated: We took a quick Going Out Guru Poll, and the winner was Lauriol Plaza. Others receiving votes included the Blue Room, Eighteenth Street Lounge, the Reef and Polly Esther's.
Best for making out: If Rhome were here, I think we'd agree about Chi-Cha Lounge. Something about the candles and live music. -- Fritz
Fairfax:
I've written poetry for years and have recently been inspired to try performing at a spoken word event. Do you have suggestions for venues/open mic nights that are especially kind/non-intimidating for first timers? I am female if that matters and at 26 feel a bit old to be trying this for the first time. Thanks a lot!
PS Rhome--you're very cute you, know.
The Going Out Gurus: It's going to be a drive Fairfax, but you shouldn't miss the open-mike sessions at Kaffa House. This U Street bar hosts one every Thursday. Why, you could check it out tonight with an eye to entering next week. And p.s., 26 isn't even the old side of young. -- Kate
Fairfax, Va.:
Hi guys! I'm looking for a place in the city with good margaritas and Mexican food for dinner and drinks Friday night. Hoping for laid-back, casual atmosphere. Thanks so much!
The Going Out Gurus: Joe stands by Cactus Cantina, but I say give El Tamarindo a try. -- Maura
Washington, D.C.:
Hi Gurus,
I need some advice. Any ideas on how to convey to a guy that his idea of going to pizza mart for dinner on a first date is not going to win a girl over? He loves the pizza, and sees no problem with this.
The Going Out Gurus: Well, maybe the girl is a big pizza mart fan herself. And maybe she's looking for a guy who will take here there. And maybe it'll all work out magically in the end. And at the very worst, at least they won't go hungry. - Joe
The Going Out Gurus: For all you folk asking about brunch, here's a link to our brand new updated guide. We haven't done a special Easter brunch list, but you can pretty much bank on the fact that anyone who does brunch will be doing it for Easter, too. -- Alexa
Something to look forward to:
NIH's outdoor summer film fest schedule is up: http://www.filmfestnih.org. Movies this year include "E.T." and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." What more could a Washingtonian want!?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) am in agreeance, as Fred Durst might say. Definitely a good line-up this year -- in addition to "E.T.," there's "Lord of the Rings," "The Sound of Music" and some other goodies. You can get the info on our site, too.
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.:
Hey, I remember a few years ago Fritz did an interns guide to D.C. It was a great guide that we have been giving to our interns every summer. Do you think you'll get a chance to update that in time for this summer's new interns? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Never fear, Capitol Hill. We'll have a new, improved Interns' Guide in the weeks ahead. I'm working on it now. (In a previous chat, I readers to send me their favorite low-budget nightlife picks. If you'd like to contribute, send your ideas and contact details to fritz.hahn@washingtonpost.com. We'll publish the best. Thanks) -- Fritz
Towson, Md.:
Are there any area French restaurants that cater to vegetarians?
The Going Out Gurus: I'm not sure there even is such a thing as a French vegetarian. But I do know that in Old Town, Le Gaulois and, almost next door to it, Bistro Lafayette, have some veg options -- things like vegetables in puff etc. -- Alexa.
Washington, D.C.:
I don't know if this is a question for this forum, but here goes. I'd like to take some film school courses, particularly film editing and cinematography. Are there are any courses like this in the D.C. area that I could take without having to apply to some university's film school?
The Going Out Gurus: Any question is considered appropriate for this forum. Surely you've noticed that by now.
I (Jen) believe you can take film courses at Montgomery College. I know that the American Film Institute offers workshops at the M.C. campus in Takoma Park, and there may be additional classes offered separately at the Rockville campus. Go to the AFI's Web site for starters, or try giving Montgomery College a call.
Mexican food:
What about Aleros in Cleveland Park? It gets no respect, I tell you. Cheap, fast, relaxed, good margaritas, the best salsa, patio -- need I go on?
The Going Out Gurus: MF, Can't say I feel the same. Good margaritas, but I'd stick to the chips and salsa.
Centreville, Va.:
What are some good places to do some horseback riding for beginniner/intermediate riders in Virginia? My aunt from New Jersey just became a Virginia rez and misses her quarterhorses terribly. We'd love to take her on a half-day ride somewhere.
The Going Out Gurus: You said she needs a quarter horse fix -- does that mean she's looking for Western style lessons? The most nearby stables Woodlawn Stables in Alexandria (703-780-4344) and Oakridge Stables near Manassas (703-594-6545) teach English style. -- Anne
Bethesda Brunch:
Montgomery's Grill on Wisconsin has a GREAT brunch buffet for $14.
The Going Out Gurus: Maura again. I'm not a picky eater, well maybe I am, but Montgomery Grill -- ewww.
Washington, D.C.:
I have a couple of friends here from the UK and we were wondering if there were any bars in the area that resemble an English or Irish Pub. McFadden's and Murphy's are much too trendy. Is there anywhere that's more authentic?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. I've been looking for an "authentic" English pub for ages, but haven't had much luck. For Irish, you might try Nanny's O'Brien's (particularly for their Monday night Irish music Seisiun). Capitol Lounge shows live English football on the weekends. And if you want great English cask ales, you won't find better than the selection at R.F.D. Any ex-pats want to chime in? -- Fritz
Arlington, Va.:
Hi guys,
I went to a great little jazz club on 14th Street near Dupont in a rowhouse-type building. It was BYOB, with little tables, soul food, and a Wednesday amateur night. Do you know the name and address? It was a couple of years ago and I've forgotten, but I would love to go again.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington, the place I think you're thinking of is HR-57. It's at 1610 14th St. Can't remember the cross street there, but I think it's 0 or P. Definitely a place any one who lives in Washington and likes jazz should get to at least once. Cheap beer and food. In fact, I think it's still BYOB, but you might want to call and confirm that before you go. - Joe
Springfield, Va.:
What are the good spots for dancing in Adams Morgan these days? I'm talking radio-friendly music, not really into the lounge scene.
The Going Out Gurus: Chief Ike's and Club Heaven would have to top the list, Springfield, followed by Crush and the little space next to the jukebox at Millie and Al's. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.:
My roommate's bachelorette party is fast approaching and I wanted to know of great places to go. We are having dinner in Dupont early in the evening and ending the night at Polyester's. Ideas on where to go in-between then would be great. Thanks for all your help!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. Did you take a look at our bachelorette party feature? Some of the info needs updating, but most of it is still accurate. Maybe one of these ideas will work for you. -- Jen
Fritz:
So, Fritz has a bountiful basket? Do tell!
The Going Out Gurus: Filled with Cadbury Mini Eggs, brought back from England (not the American ones). Rhome and I refer to them as "Crack Eggs" because, like Missy, they're so addictive. -- Fritz
Dupont, Washington, D.C.:
I don't have a car, but I'd like to go to Hain's Point to see "The Awakening." Any idea how to go about that (besides a taxi)?
The Going Out Gurus: My dear Dupont. Hains Point in East Potomac Park is really tough to get to without a car. Even the National Parks Service admits that public transportation fails visitors -- I just called. I know that bike riding works beautifully; just follow the river path south from Thompson's Boat House in Georgetown. "The Awakening" is a cool spot for hanging out and picnicking, but you're right, it's not work the newly inflated cab fares. If you do suck it up and cab it, considered tacking on a round of putting or a whacking a bucket or two of balls at the driving range at the golf course? It's only a few bucks and watching the planes coming in at National is a thrill. Also, hot dogs (and beers) are available in the scruffy club house, just don't ask them when they last cleaned the machine. -- Kate
Fairfax, VA:
Hey there! With all the new hotel bars coming on the scene, Helix Lounge, Bar Rouge, etc, it's hard to choose! Have any of you been to either above? My boyfriend and I trying to decide for Friday night.
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Fairfax. I've reviewed all the Kimpton bars, and those two are probably my favorites (although the patio at Poste sounded mighty good earlier this week). Rouge is trendier and gets more crowded; Helix is more spacious. On a Friday night, you might want to opt for Helix for that reason; both bars have excellent drink menus. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C., pubs Q:
Don't the Limeys get enough of pubs across the pond?
Take 'em to Hooters.
The Going Out Gurus: Or ESPN Zone.
Bachelorette in Washington, D.C.:
Gurus and fellow chatters, please help me solve a dilemma. Some friends are throwing me a bachelorette party next month on a Saturday night, and I really want to invite my 20-year-old sister. Where can we go to dance or party on a Saturday that won't turn her away at the door?
The Going Out Gurus: Hopefully this list will answer your question.
Bowie, Md.:
Any non-chain steak places in the city (or immediate area) that give you a better steak and overall dining experience than Outback for about the same price?
I'd hate to think Outback is the top echelon in my price range.
The Going Out Gurus: We say Cafe Deluxe where for about $13 you can have a juicy steak frites salad that's first rate. Yeah, give Outback the heave-ho. -- AB and KG
Fairfax, Va.:
Anyplace to listen to reggae, preferrably live?
The Going Out Gurus: Bukom Cafe on 18th St. in Adams Morgan often has a live reggae band playing. For bigger names, keep an eye on the schedules at Zanzibar (they also have all kinds of Caribbean music) and Crossroads (more often dancehall reggae and djs). And the State Theatre in Falls Church often books reggae acts. Toots and the Maytals are playing there April 24. - Joe
Arlington, Va.:
Hi all. Since Whitey's closed, I am without my Wednesday night Trivia fix. Do you know of any other places in the area that do trivia besides Jimmy's Old Town Tavern? JOTT is too far from Metro for some of my group.
The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, I'm starting to think you don't care. This article that I did for the Weekend Section has all the info on local trivia nights, although in the last few weeks, I've heard Stetson's has restarted their Tuesday trivia night (haven't been, though). -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.:
I'm a girl -- you can win me over with pizza (and a boat).
The Going Out Gurus: See!
Alexandria, Va.:
My husband and I would like to take a bike ride around Rock Creek Park. However, we do not own bikes. Is there a place near the park that rents bikes? If not Rock Creek Park, is there another place to take a nice bike ride when the weather becomes nice?
Thank you! You guys do a great job and I love reading your advice every week!
The Going Out Gurus: The western end of Georgetown (where Key Bridge hits M Street) has a couple options for bike rental, because it gives you easy access to three trails, including Rock Creek. You can ride west along the Capital Crescent Trail, east to hook up with Rock Creek Park or head south across Key Bridge to join the Mount Vernon Trail. Big Wheel Bikes has a big selection. Basic rates are $5/hour (three-hour minimum) or $25 per business day. The Bicycle Pro Shop offers mountain bikes and the Specialized Expedition brand, a "comfort" bike with wider tires and upright handle bars for $20 (including helmet) per business day. -- Anne
Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus,
Love the information you give. Any reviews on Cirque du Soleil? also would you know what the timings for the show are on Saturday? I can't find it on the Post Web site.
The Going Out Gurus: Which Cirque de Soleil do you mean? The live performance or the IMAX film? In either case, the times can be found in those links. I haven't seen either, so I can't offer a review. But maybe others can? -- Jen
Mexican Food Again:
Red River Grill on Capitol Hill. Some of the best nachos in the city, good margarita specials on thursdays, pretty decent food too!
The Going Out Gurus: Man, that patio was packed last night. (Must have been the $1.50 Bud bottles that brought out all the interns.) The food is okay. -- Fritz
For ex-pats:
One destination in addition to Fritz's selections for newcomers from the UK. The Royal Mile Pub in Wheaton (especially for Scotch, fish and dinner specials). Beer list is dwindling, but thats puritanical Montgomery County's fault.
The Going Out Gurus: Yep. Largest selection of single-malts in the area. -- Fritz
Glover Park, Washington, D.C. FYI:
"The Deck" -- outdoor bar, the Savoy Hotel -- opened for the season last night. Also, I heard that the space once occupied by Mon Cheri -- that is now closed -- is going to be reopened as a new bar. It is going to be called "Burbon" and is will to be operated by the same people as the "Blue Room" in Adams Morgan. We could really use a new bar in the neighborhood, and that space has the potential to be quite nice. But I don't know when it is to open. Do you? You guys are awesome -- keep up the great work!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Glover Park. Thanks for the heads-up on the Deck. They didn't give me a date when I called a few weeks back. As for Bourbon, your info is pretty much correct. It'll be nice to have a new lounge/bar in upper Northwest. -- Fritz
Straight from Galway, Ireland:
Spent some time in Galway and enjoy the Irish pubs too. I must admit that Nanny's is a good choice and many of the waitresses are Irish too. But another option across the street is 4Ps, a little larger than Nanny's but with Irish music every night and Bulmers and Boddington's tap -- you'll surely find something that makes your feel home there.
The Going Out Gurus: Ta.
Washington, D.C.:
Any scoop on the Washington Film Festival? Who, what, where and when? (Mnd maybe why?)
The Going Out Gurus: Here's the what on D.C. Film Fest 2003, which should also encompass the who, where and when. Why? Because people like to see good movies and the festival provides an annual occasion to do just that. Oh yeah, and because we like you. -- Jen
Date Night:
A few months ago a poster asked if you all had considered doing a Date Night feature. Any more thoughts on the subject?
The Going Out Gurus: We've been dating our tails off just to pull such a guide together. A couple more weeks and we'll be ready. -- Maura
Washington, D.C.:
A group of friends are coming from out of town. We were planning a movie at the uptown theater and then on to Dinner in Cleveland park itself. We were planning to have Indian or Thai/Vietnamese/Japanese. Looking for a fun place with nice atmosphere, cocktails, and good food. Planning to spend about $35-$40 per head.
Any recommendations?
The Going Out Gurus: If you have money to spend, go to Indique or Yanyu. Indique has zany cocktails, plus a pre-theater dining menu, and it's fun for smallish groups. Yanyu is the sleek, classy place, a bit pricer. If it's a weekend and you're on a schedule, call for a reservation. -- Anne
Re: Film courses:
Check out the training offered by D.C.'s Public Access TV Channel. Every metro area with cable is required by law to have one of these channels that only airs community produced television. In order to give the public acess to the masses, they are also required to have training available for anyone who wants it. Usually this means they have great and relatively inexpensive courses you can take, plus they provide a great forum for gaining experience. I took a video editing course at a public access station in California and I really enjoyed it. Anyways, check out their Web site, http://www.dctvonline.org/ .
The Going Out Gurus: Another suggestion for our film schooler. Thanks for the tip.
Cafe Deluxe:
Your Guide search engine pulls three establishments of that name. Are they a chain, or is one the "right" one?
The Going Out Gurus: They're all good. All the same owner. A mini chain, if you like.
Arlington, Va.:
Joe, I read your story on Washington Social Club. Are they as good as you say they are? Should I go see them Saturday at the Black Cat? Any other local bands worth checking out?
The Going Out Gurus: Well, I think they're a tremendous band. Yeah, go see them. I think they're second on the bill on Sat. Other local bands to check out: Canyon, Storm the Unpredictable, Los Hermanos Rodriguez, Dead Meadow, Carlsonics, Poem-cees, Grandsons, Little Pink. That's a few anyway. There are a good number of others. Anyone want to add their favorites?
Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus. Do you know if there are any happy hour specials at any of the restaurants/bars along Pentagon Row tonight? I checked the search engine, but couldn't find any. Does this mean there are none? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. Not sure about Champps, but Sine has discounted Miller Lite and Yuengling drafts every day until 7. -- Fritz
Bethesda, Md., re: Brunch:
I'm going to have to second the motion on Montgomery's Grille. I know their regular menu's not that good, but they've got the best French toast in town -- made with challah bread! Plus Eggs Benedict and a fajita bar on an all-you-can eat buffet is a great deal and they're tasty too! Just be careful because the drinks aren't included (not even coffee/soda), so that's how the bill can get hiked up fast. Definitely recommend it. It gets REALLY crowded after 11, but there's always room at the bar.
The Going Out Gurus: Forget it, Bethesda, you can't convince me, but if others dare to try...
Alexandria, Va.:
My personal idea of hell is going to a club. I'm 34 -- is it because I'm old? Or do others in their 30s frequent clubs? I get the willies just thinking about it.
The Going Out Gurus: Now that I am in my mid-to-late early thirties, I get the willies too. Too many clubs are too forced, too smokey, too loud. Are you really looking to dance or just looking for something lively. Eighteenth Street Lounge suits my club fix. I don't find it overly pretentious (outside of the one-way glass and doorman and no sign). Neo-soul at Juste Lounge is a good time too. But it doesn't have to be fancy. Blue Room and Rendezvous often sports a crowd that won't make you feel older. Have the time of your young sexy life. -- Kate
Third time asking about pizza by the slice:
Anyone try the pizza by the slice place across from Ballston Metro yet? We haven't had a chance to try it since we live in Courthouse now. But if someone says it's good, I'll try it.
The Going Out Gurus: Anyone been?
Washington, D.C.:
For brunch in Bethesda, Cafe Deluxe now serves brunch.
The Going Out Gurus: Oh yes, I forgot. And it's great if there are wee ones in tow.
Going Out Girly:
18th Street Lounge -- my new fave place. Okay so maybe it's 10 bucks to get in, but the music was great (upbeat background music, but not too invasive), the crowd seemed hip and professional (not too much attitude, really!), and the outdoor deck was great!
The Going Out Gurus: How much is Platinum? Ten bucks to get into ESL seems like a good deal to me.
Re: Open-Mike:
Iota in Arlington on Wednesdays is good. You can sign-up on the little chalkboard.
The Going Out Gurus: Cheers, Open-Mike.
Virginian:
There was a series in the Post while back called something like, "You haven't seen D.C. until..." Where can I access the article?
The Going Out Gurus: Virginian, they're all archived right here. Now get busy. -- Maura
Arlington, Va.:
What would you choose: Lemur Lounge or Chi Cha? Also, can you recommend a romantic spot (dinner or just hanging out) for my boyfriend and I to go to this weekend before I leave for a week-long trip? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Well, Arlington, Lemur Lounge is a once-a-week house and downtempo night at the Casablanca Restaurant in Alexandria, not an actual location. I'd choose that over Chi-Cha on a Friday night. Last week, they had Desmond Williams in, and this week is the always-excellent mixmaster Robbie Hardkiss. Chi-Cha is cool, but way too crowded on the weekends. -- Fritz
Where do we go George?:
Let's imagine that you were picking a new home base in the District. What neighborhoods would you consider best bets for going out and having a good time? What would you suggest?
The Going Out Gurus: In the District, I like Capitol Hill. I live in Adams Morgan and on Saturday and Sunday mornings I'd much rather have Eastern Market on my doorstep than smashed beer bottles and walk of shamers. Chime in people, what do you recommend? --Kate
U Street, Washington, D..C:
Regarding the bikes/Awakening question, I just walked by this place last weekend as was intrigued enough to visit their Web site. http://www.bikethesites.com/ Looks like they rent bikes on the mall, which would be a great launching point for "The Awakening."
The Going Out Gurus: A very thoughful suggestion, thank U.
Dirksen Building:
Looking for a decent steak on a budget? Try The Saloon on Tuesday nights. Steak, potato and salad for $10! Plus, they have a good beer selection.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes indeed. An amazing beer selection, actually. It's a very cool spot, and one of U Street's best-kept secrets. Whoops. -- Fritz
Re: Horseback riding:
If they want to rent a horse, Greenway stables is in a very pretty area and the prices are reasonable. Just call ahead for reservations.
I don't know if the other two offer rental horses.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Greenway does rent horses. And true enough, calling ahead is a must.
Petworth, Washington, D.C.:
French and veg -- Francis at Lavandou is very veg-friendly. While the menu is not veg heavy, there are some items. And he'll make others too. He'll even accommodate vegans (I'd call ahead).
The Going Out Gurus: Oui, oui, Lavandou.
Screen On The Green:
Last week someone asked about the Screen on the Green schedule for this year. The Park Service is suspending all softball field permits aroung the Washington Monument from before July 4 through summer 2005 because of expanded construction related to the World War II Memorial. I would not be surprised if SOTG is a victim of the same fate this year and next.
The Going Out Gurus: All right, I'll see if I can look into this before next week's chat. That would be a major bummer if true. Hopefully I can bring you some good (but possibly bad) news on this next week. -- Jen
Washington, D.C.:
It's graduation time, two questions:
1. There are about 10 of us graduating with our masters from GW, and we'll be going to their swanky black tie event at Union Station on Saturday night. But where do we go afterward? Someplace that's not too stuffy where we can have some fun, but not look like fools in tuxes and evening gowns.
2. Graduation is on the Ellipse Sunday morning. Who's doing a nice brunch these days? Old Ebbitt...eh...been there done that. I want someplace cool and classy, preferably in town so we don't have to schlep after the ceremony. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: True story: After a black-tie wedding on Saturday night, a load of folks in tuxes (including me) and fancy dresses went to Mousetrap on Saturday. (The couple are friends of the DJ and actually met at the Black Cat.) It was a lot of fun. The bride even came in her dress ...
Anyway, near Union Station, there's Lounge 201, which has a dress code and great Martinis. I don't know if you want a club, lounge, etc., but many of the upscale lounges (ESL, Bar Rouge, etc.) should do the trick. Maybe the new Ritz-Carlton bar in Georgetown (which I'm dying to visit, btw)?
As for brunch, Alexa suggests the new Chef Geoff's downtown. I think that sounds grand.
Congrats, by the way. -- Fritz
Columbia Heights:
For the poster before looking for a real pub, the closest I've found for atmosphere is the Royal Mile. Last time I was there I was next to a couple of blokes talking about playing football with Georgie Best. Ales could be better, but they're acceptable. If only they could take out a few tables and extend the bar...
The Going Out Gurus: I hear you, Columbia Heights. And it's Metro accessable!
Washington, D.C.:
Do they have monument tours at night and if so how do I hook my family up with that?
The Going Out Gurus: The Park Service doesn't offer official late night tours as far as I know, but rangers stay on hand and answer queries until the monuments close -- 11:45pm for Lincoln, Jefferson, FDR monuments and Korean and Vietnam War Memorials. -- Maura
Bethesda, Md.:
Since the discussion on brunch in Bethesda continues, I have to contribute a thought: Louisiana Express. Amazing food, very reasonable.
The Going Out Gurus: Another goodie.
Washington, D.C.:
Hello,
I don't like chain restaurants, but the commercials for Red Lobster have been calling my name. Has anyone ever been? Pricey? Good food? Reason to hang my head in shame at the very thought of this place? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Why the shame D.C.? We're not all food snobs here. Why don't you do us all a big favor and get to a Red Lobster this weekend and then report back to us next week. Seriously. We're looking forward to your review.
Mt. Pleasant goes burlesque:
What's the scoop on Signal 66? I'm thinking about going to tonight's advante gard circus show. I know that the new convention center is very close, but how is the safety factor for that area at night (including the Mt. Vernon metro)?
The Going Out Gurus: You should definitely see the Signal 66 show, MTGB. The women polled here say they would *not* walk there from the Metro by themselves after dark, but would with another person. That's just us, though. Feeling safe is a very personal thing. -- Anne
Washington, D.C.:
Hello all --
Perhaps a bit nerdy for this crowd, but is there a used book sale in Chevy Chase this Saturday? There's a listing for "Chevy Chase Women's Club" on your Web site but it links to a blank page. Now that Goodwill no longer holds its annual used book extravaganza, this would be a nice event to attend. Please respond! Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Nothing's too nerdy, not while I'm alive to call myself Guru. The Women's Club of Chevy Chase held its 22nd annual used book yesterday, DC. But you'll find future announcements in Literary Calendar under the "Special Events" header. -- Kate
Washington, D.C.:
Mexican and casual -- how did Mixtec get left off the list? Steak on a budget -- Annie's isn't bad. Certainly better than Outback!
The Going Out Gurus: Take that Outback.
Metro Center, Washington, D.C.:
Dear GoGs,
What are your suggestions for fun, and not overpriced Friday happy hours in the Dupont Circle area?
The Going Out Gurus: We like the Fox and Hounds, Gabriel, Uni and Cafe Citron. Kate loves the champagne by the glass at Bistrot du Coin. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.:
GOGs: I am going to a show at the Arena Stage in SW at 8 p.m. tonight and need a place within walking distance to meet my date for drinks/lite fare before. I know my options are limited in SW and we will not have time to meet in another neighborhood or drive somewhere else. I was thinking about Zanzibar? It sounds a little "clubby," but it seems to be my only option for a casual bar scene before the show. Your Web site and Eric Brace (my favorite) gave it a good review, but what are your thoughts or do you have other ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: You could try Zanzibar. But in the past, I (Jen) have gotten a glass of wine and a snack in the Le Bon Cafe of Arena's Fichandler lobby. There are tables and chairs and, while the 'ol plastic cup of wine may not be an essay in elegance, it's very affordable. And since I'm already at the theater, I'm not all antsy about rushing to get to my seat. To top it off, the cafe shares its name with the lead singer of Duran Duran. How sweet is that?
Great local band:
I love to go see Army of Me when they are playing in town. They have been traveling a lot lately, but they are playing at the Black Cat this Saturday night. Two years ago they won a contest at 99.1 to open on the second stage at HFStival and been featured in numerous papers and magazines as a great up-and-coming new group.
The Going Out Gurus: Right, I forgot about Army of Me. They're headlining on Sat which means they'll probably be on around midnight.
Brit Guests:
May want to head for a day trip to Fells Point. Lots of pubs to visit.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes. The Wharf Rat and the Blarney Stone are great bars. Gotta love the ales at the former and $1.50 PBR (on draft!) and Natty Bohs at the Blarney. -- Fritz
Gradutaion:
Fritz, is the new Ritz in Gerogetown open yet?
The Going Out Gurus: Open this week, or so we were told.
Washington, D.C.:
I recently moved to Capitol Hill in SE (15th and Penn area). Are there any decent restaurants or pubs in my neighborhood?
The Going Out Gurus: Washington, it's sad, but there aren't many great bars out that way. You might want to head in to Eastern Market. Anyone else have suggestions?
Somewhere, USA:
I'm a little wary about going to Constitution Hall for Widespread Panic tomorrow night. It seems like a shaky venue for any band, much less a band like Panic. Are my fears justified?
The Going Out Gurus: Well, I don't know what you mean by shaky venue. Security is tight and there's not a lot of tolerance for dancing in the aisles, so that might not make widespread panic fans happy. But the sound is much improved and the sightlines (most of them anyway) are pretty good. I kind of like it as a music venue. - Joe
North Dupont:
Capital Hill? You've got to be joking. There's no place to go out there. And you will need a car. You can't really walk to stores. And the blocks in Capital Hill are up and down. It's not so safe at night depending on what block you are on. I recommend my neighborhood on T Street NW. You can walk to Adams Morgan and 14/U Street nightlife areas but my street is clean and calm. Best of both worlds. And I can walk to several markets and a 24 hour Rite Aid and tons of amazing restaurants and boutique. Cleveland Park is also starting to get cool with Indique and Aroma and is reasonably close to Dupont and Adams Morgan
The Going Out Gurus: There are plenty of places to go on the Hill. And there's no parking on T Street. And things are tough all over, note the shooting of my neighbor last Friday night before 10 p.m. on the corner of 20th and Kalorama. Cleveland Park, Glover Park are sweet too, but it's all sky-high expensive. Why not take the gamble and at least look around 4th and 5th Streets behind the new Convention Center. Frankly, I as much as I love DC, I want a little garden so I bungalow in South Arlington is my dream. -- Kate
Rocktown USA:
Good music I have checked out recently across a number of genres -
Bicycle Thieves for rocking, Lamont (going to see tonight at Madam's Organ...dancing shoes on!), Bobby Thompson for the sheer joy of guitar, Pharmacy Profits for more rocking, SkyTwin is a cool DJ to watch/hear spin....ummm......Mike Holden and Claire Gilbride for acoustic stuff...
Lots of good music out there
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Rocktown.
Fairfax, Va.:
Can anyone provide me with a list of movie theatres in the Northern Virginia and D.C. area which have auditoriums featuring THX certification? With all the action blockbusters coming out soon, it will be nice to see a couple of them in a place with sound that rocks (besides the Hoffman 22 and the Muvico at Arundel Mills).
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) can't provide you with a list this second, but that's something I'll try to work on in the next couple of weeks, before "X2" arrives. Remind me during an upcoming "Got Plans?" to send a link.
In the meantime, I'm sure you know that the sound and visuals at the Uptown are most excellent.
Arlington Chicks:
Have you guys tried the Georgetown Ritz Carlton -- either the lounge or restaurant?
P.S. We love the chat!
The Going Out Gurus: Haven't been since it opened, but Tom Sietsema wrote about it in yesterday's Weekly Dish. I'm going to belly up to the bar this weekend. -- Fritz
Hill Pubs:
There's nothing down that far on Pennsylvania (15th Street), but The Lil Pub and Zack's are only a few blocks away and worth the short walk.
The Going Out Gurus: "Short Walk"? That's like nine blocks. But they're great spots, I agree. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.:
Where would you go for a blow-out birthday dinner for your 30th? Mine's in two weeks, and SO has offered to take me out somplace nice. I am vegetarian, but would prefer modern American cuisine, seem to do Indian, Thai, etc., quite a lot. Any suggestions? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Fancypants dinners, non-Asian? I looove Nora. It's an organic, not vegetarian restaurant, but there's often more than the one token veggie option. Everything about it is soothing. Definitely make a reservation in advance. -- Anne
Courtney:
Here's my deal: I live in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and transferring from BU to Georgetown for the fall. But I'm moving at the beginning of this summer and I'll be alone down there for a while. I'll be 21 by then and I'm interested in finding bars with great alt-rock live music. Suggestions on where to start? Thanks, guys.
The Going Out Gurus: hi Courtney. Not sure how you define "alt-rock" but your choices in DC are actually kind of slim considering this is a relatively big city. For national acts, the 9:30 is your best bet. For medium size acts, it's the Black Cat and (sometimes) the Velvet Lounge. For small but promising acts, Galaxy Hut in Arlington is the place. Sometimes Nation has good alt-rock bands, but fewer and fewer these days. - Joe
Arlington, Va.:
Re: to Chi Cha v. Lemur -- yeah, I went there Friday night to see Desmond. Fun time, although I'd prefer to stay in the District -- will definitely go again though. Still want a suggestion -- quiet place for boy and me to smooch, possible dinner, music, definitely drinks?
The Going Out Gurus: Ah, quiet. That's the key. Chi-Cha is not quiet on weekends. Quite the opposite. Then again, what's really quiet on a Friday night? You might want to try the classy Le Bar (which has excellent food, if you need it), the Tabard Inn, Helix ... suggestions from the crowd? -- Fritz
Sine:
Why would people go to Sine and order Miller Lite or Pottsville's own?
The Going Out Gurus: Because they're cheap?
Red Lobster Review:
Don't waste your time. A few years back, we went to the Red Lobster in Alexandria. The place was filthy and the service horrid. We complained to the manager and he gave us a $25 gift certificate. Tried it again a month later, and the place hadn't changed.
The Going Out Gurus: Hmm. Well, lets see if our friend has better luck.
Outdoor spots:
I promised last week I'd keep thining of good outdoor bars -- here are a few more to wet your whistle: Poste (Fritz just mentioned this earlier today), Stetson's, Local 16, Irongate. I'll keep thinking.
The Going Out Gurus: I was sitting on the huge patio at the Exchange last Friday, sipping a Foggy Bottom, and came up with a list of about 45 places outside of the Arlington-Adams Morgan-Bethesda-Dupont-Georgetown roundups I've already written. Get ready for a massive list sometime soon. I love Stetson's (less since they dumped the great happy hour) and Local 16, by the way. -- Fritz
Reston, Va.:
I'm having visitors from Denmark in town tonight and tomorrow night. They're doing a three-city tour of New York, Philly and D.C. They want me to take them out at nite and show them what D.C. has to offer. I think tomorrow night we're doing Adams Morgan, but what do I do with them tonight?
Also, anyone know if the line for the Spy Museum on a Friday is super long? I was supposed to buy tickets for it, but forgot and now there are none to be had. I'm a terrible host.
The Going Out Gurus: Reston, for something different tonight you could hit Georgetown -- Mie n Yu (possibly less pretentious on a Thursday) and Modern. And Agua Ardiente isn't too far away, but better for chatting then people watching. Or stick close to Dupont for Cafe Citron, Gazuza, Topaz.
As for the Spy Museum, same day tickets are available. The museum recommends arriving after 2pm (they're open until 8) to avoid crowds, but being the start of a holiday weekend, it might be tough to still get tickets. If they haven't visited before, there's lots else to see -- Botanic Garden, Air and Space, National Gallery. Good luck. -- Maura
Springfield, Va.:
Imagine a 29-year-old single woman who lives a quiet life in suburbia (freaks out about driving into "the city"), doesn't drink and isn't into music (so she doesn't go out to bars/clubs), has a very limited taste for food (only eats cheese pizza and turkey club sandwiches, thinks Chinese and Mexican food is too exotic), isn't into movies or reading (watches lots of TV). OK, so I'm this person's friend and she wants me to arrange a 30th birthday celebration for her. I have no idea what to do because she's so picky! If you guys have any suggestions that can cater to her limited tastes and still offer me a chance at having a semi-enjoyable time, you're definitely Gurus. (As to my friend's limitations, that area might be for Carolyn Hax -- but that's another story). Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Is this a set up? You've just descrined Maura, Anne, Alexa, Jen and I to a T.
Okay, down to business. What about celebrating your friend's birthday with apple-pie-in-sky style nostalgia. How many people are you expecting? It would be wild to the front window booths at Bob and Ediths. Way too much work? A big table at Alexandria's Cafe Deluxe in McLean, Va. I held a birthday lunch at the CD in Bethesda not too long ago and the manager was kind enough not only to allow us to bring in our own birthday cake but to plate it and candle it and cut it too. Cafe D. is none too exotic and as I raved to Alexa, they serve a nicely apportioned steak, frites, salad for an unbeatable $13.95. That's birthday food. Hax can surely handle the rest, but you sound like a good friend to me. -- Kate
For the person down on the Hill:
I live on the Hill, sold my car five years ago and haven't missed it. I can walk or Metro virtually anywhere I need to go.
The Going Out Gurus: High five, Hill-liver.
About Red Lobster:
It's "good enough" for people who live in the central part of the country where frozen seafood with lots of butter is the best they can reasonably hope for. In this area, try Johnny's Half Shell or O'Donnell's. Even Phillip's is better than RL, while not actually good. Also try Capt. Billy's and Robertsons in Pope's Creek.
The Going Out Gurus: Uh, ARL, you can get fresh seafood in the Midwest these days. It no longer arrives by by train.
Alexandria, Va.:
First, agree on Lauriol Plaza being most overrated. The rudeness alone should deter people. Second, I know it isn't D.C., but Taqueria Poblano in Del Ray is simply the best Mexican around. And now the question: Best place to take parents (who are rather bland eaters so even Mexican is "fancy") to a late lunch on a Saturday in May?
The Going Out Gurus: How about here? I went recently and enjoyed everything (meal, service and bill) immensely. -- Kate
Best French Bread:
When not made from scratch, best french toast in town is at Southside 815 in Old Town. Also made with challa bread but stuffed with raspberries, cream cheese and pecans. Only downside? Not served with real syrup (said the Vermonter).
The Going Out Gurus: Ta for the tips.
Arlington, Va.:
Hey guys!
What is the deal with this new pool bar opening up in Rosslyn where the old Pawn Shop and Petibon's used to be? Can that survive between Clarendon and Georgetown?
The Going Out Gurus: Stay tuned, Arlington. I've visited Continental few times and am in the process of writing the story. Great place, amazing retro design and nine pool tables. It was opened by the team who brought us Buffalo Billiards, Bedrock, Atomic, the two CarPools and Aroma, so stakes is high. I'm knocked over. -- Fritz
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.:
Some friends and I tried Mantis on Columbia Road last night. I know people have been asking about it so I thought I'd share my impressions. It was a gorgeous night and a lot of fun to sit outside. The staff was super-friendly (some of them used to work at Pasta Inn); the place looks more pretentious than it is, people were sitting outside in jeans and shorts. The food was really delicious (pan-asian tapas). The drinks were ok but not great. The bill for four tapas plates and six drinks was $90 with tip. That feels expensive, and will keep me from going often, but maybe I'm just cheap (or naive!). Bottom line: worth trying, particularly on a nice night, but not exactly a good deal.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks.
Nora All The Way!:
Been to Nora's for a significant birthday recently and it was quite memorable. If you ask in advance they will print a msg on your menu "Happy Birthday (your name)" or "Happy 25th Anniversary" etc. Very sentimental touch and a nice keepsake to remember the night.
The Going Out Gurus: I believe L'Auberge Chez Francois does this for happy occasions as well. Quite sweet.
Dupont, Washington, D.C.:
My best friend is coming into town this Friday. She wants to go out for sushi and then clubbing/lounging. We're tired of the joints on 18th and Connecticut. Any suggestions? Oh yeah, we're in our late 20s.
The Going Out Gurus: Hotel bars: Rouge, Topaz, Helix, 15 ria. And Zola. You'll be fine.
Washington, D.C.:
Gurus --
Love the chats, need some help. A lady I have been seeing is coming to D.C. next weekend from New York. She mentioned to me that her perception of D.C. is that D.C. is "glamorous." While I'm not sure that she is right, what are a few exhibits, restaurants, and lounges that she might enjoy? She is not a fan of Italian food. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Lucky you. Now, if you want to keep her from thinking otherwise, take her to the Hirshhorn to see Gerhard Richter; take her to Savino's for the $20 cocktail called "Non Che Domani" (call it even -- Richter show will cost you nothing); take her for walk around the Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean War Veterans Memorial at dusk (million dollar views, again free) and for dinner at Agua Ardiente, the new lounge/restaurant from the owner of Chi Cha (at 24th and N) or Zaytinya or Zola or any other restaurant begining with Z. -- Kate
Washington, D.C. Bikeriding:
This could be a hard one, but I think you guys are up for the challenge. A potential plan for Saturday with the significant other: get up at the crack of dawn on Saturday to go riding down the Mt. Vernon (or some other) trail. Is there a cool greasy spoon along the way where we can get a good old-fashioned style breakfast?
The Going Out Gurus: Bob & Edith's is one of our favorite diners, but that's a ways off the Four Mile Run Trail. Still, you could get to it from side streets. Old Town Alexandria has lots of dining options, very close to the Mount Vernon Trail. Another option: there's a Fresh Fields/Whole Foods very near the W&OD Trail in Vienna (703-319-2000).
The Going Out Gurus:
That's it from us. See you next week.
