With the Entertainment Guide Staff

Thursday, April 4, 2002; 1 p.m. EST
Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EST, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Such a lovely trove of questions you've sent us this week. Why, we're pinker than cherry blossoms. We've been out and about since we last met, have you? Fritz sipped into Reef in Adams Morgan last night; Alexa says "Ray's The Steaks" in Arlington does; and Maura had a sneak preview of "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Year." Did she like it more than The Post's art critic Blake Gopnik? Ask her. Joe's out today but Anne and Jen are here. I'm Kate, and I've just managed to wash the stamp off my hand from Monday night's White Stripes show. My hearing has returned so ask away. Who's first.
Washington, D.C.:
Hello,
I hope you can help me. My parents are coming up to visit, and my dad has bad knees. We were going to drive down to the Mall and museums and use his handicapped sticker to get parking. But does that area even have handicapped spaces, or is it all meters? (We're going to the Air and Space, if that helps).
Thanks a bunch.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. This is Maura. There are a limited amount of handicapped spaces by the Smithsonian Castle off of Jefferson Drive. There are also a few handicapped spaces across the Mall at the National Gallery. I would try and go on a Sunday morning, if you can. The museum opens at 10 a.m. and if you arrive on the early side there's a beter chance to find a spot -- handicapped or regular street parking -- nearby. Good luck.
Matthews:
Dear Gurus
I'm going to see Manilow at MCI this Sunday. I'm bringing my mom since I can't find anyone my age (mid 20s) who appreciates Barry. My question: what's a good place in that area for a pre-show drink? Classier than Ruby Tuesdays please.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Matthews. This is Fritz. If my mom drank hard liquor (which I’ve never seen her do) and liked Barry Manilow (instead of Willie Nelson), I’d take her to the cozy little backroom bar at Angelo and Maxie’s. It’s not in the main restaurant area, so it’s a bit quieter, the music is mellow and the liquor and service are top class. They make a good Boodles martini.
Capitol Hill, DC:
My boyfriend and I are going out of town for the weekend, but the B&B doesn't take dogs. We don't really know any of our neighbors, so can you suggest a dogsitting service?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Capitol Hill, it's Alexa and while I don't know of any dogsitters per se, I might suggest you go through your vet. They often have bulletin boards full of sitting services. So it might be a way to start. But perhaps one of our friends here might be able to help...?
Gold Cup Attire:
I am going to the Gold Cup for the first time this year and was wondering what people wear there. I am going to be in more of the younger/partying section, but do I need a dress and a hat? (I'm thinking Pretty Woman polo scene here) I have been hearing mixed reports from friends and knew that the Gurus could straighten things out for me. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi GPA. Maura again. The crowds -- no matter where they're partying -- tend to dress up for Gold Cup. A hat and gloves are not required, but I'd go in a dress or skirt (assuming you're a girl). If you didn't have a chance to read our shopping guru Janet's discussion yesterday, I loved the advice to wear your wedge-heeled sandals to keep from sinking into the grass.
Washington, D.C.:
I know this should probably go to Mr. Sietsema, but thought the gurus might be able to pass the message along. I read a few weeks ago in the weekend magazine that Bistro Bernoise on MacArthur Boulevard offered a special Tuesday night fondue package -- fondue, salads and a glass of wine for two for $39. Anyhoo, went last week, and was told the wine's not included in that price (and that it never was). No biggie -- but thought you'd want to update your listing so as to not mislead anyone. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the update Washington.
Arlington, Va.:
Hi! Other than the Blue Room and Felix, are there any other slight dressy places to go on the main drag of Adams Morgan?
The Going Out Gurus: Well, Arlington, there’s always Cities, which is a bit stuffier than the two places you mention. If you venture a half block off the beaten path, though, Habana Village’s lounge has a dress code and wonderful mojitos. It’s too early to say what the crowd at Reef will be, but I’m hoping it’s a step above some of the other Adams Morgan haunts.
Adams Morgan-ish:
Delicate question: Are there any reputable places in the city where someone can get the male equivalent of the Brazilian Bikini wax? Would it have to be a place where men do the waxing? It's a delicate area, you know. The few places my female friends have gone seem hesitant to take male customers because the waxers themselves are women.
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here. Give Spalon a call (202/462-9000). If this P Street hair/waxing/nail space doesn't, they could surely offer a referral. Also, on the ground floor of the building that houses Results, The Gym on U Street, a salon called Bang has opened: 202/299-0925. They might. Hope US/Brazil relations, err, improve.
Washington, D.C.:
Please help! Old friends of my parents ventured cross country for a "big-city" vacation. They want to take me to dinner on Saturday night and I know they are suffering from "sticker shock." They want to eat on the waterfront in Georgetown. Suggestions on a fun spot (no Mexican food) that won't break the bank? Thanks! Your chats often save the day.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Washington, it's Alexa. We say your best bet on the water down there is Riverside Grille.
Columbia, Md.:
Do you know anything about the Kinetic Sculpture Race in Baltimore? Sounds interesting.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Columbia. The American Visionary Art Museum's annual kinetic sculpture race sets off next Saturday, April 13. It's a hoot to see these hand made and human-powered works of art cover 15 miles of sand, mud, water and street in downtown Baltimore. I (Maura) hope to make it myself.
Alexandria, Va.:
My parents and brother (15) from Wisconsin are here. Any suggestions for where we should go for dinner after seeing Shear Madness at the Kennedy Center on Saturday? I've taken them to Lebanese Taverna and RTs so far -- they loved both. Tonight's Duangrats, for Thai and I'm certain it will be a hit.
Also, if the show starts at 6. What time should we get there and what time can we expect to be out and on our way to dinner?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Alexandria. If I (Jen) recall correctly from my "Shear Madness" experience (and given that there's another performance of "Madness" at 9), you should be out of there no later than 8 p.m. As far as where to eat, here are a few suggestions: Brasserie at the Watergate (French and very close by), Kaz Sushi Bistro, or perhaps a journey into Georgetown for an American meal at Clyde's.
Silver Spring, Md.:
Any buzz on the new dance nights at Black Cat (Dollhouse, Pixie Sticks)? I'll check them out for myself, but wondering if there's any back story. Are these just more options, or do they have anything to do with the fact that Mousetrap has gotten a little tired? Any word on the DJs? Thanks and rock on.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Silver Spring. This is Fritz. It's all part of Dante's plan to put DJs on the backstage when there's no band back there, and it seems to be working well. There are only two "regular" DJ slots at the moment to accomodate touring bands, poetry readings and the like, but some of the other nights have been spectacular. (I'm more likely to go to free ones, though.)
Don't have the scoop on Dollhouse, I'm afraid, but I am looking forward to Pixie Sticks on April 19. It's a new wave night with DJs including Steve EP, who is responsible for the Metro Cafe's Depeche Mode and "Morrissey vs. Robert Smith" dance parties.
Arlington:
Is Ray's the Steaks expensive? I work right around the corner and there's a dearth of good places to grab lunch.
The Going Out Gurus: No, Arlington, it really isn't and a couple of us in this office are big fans of Ray and his steaks -- quality ingredients simply prepared. No pretentions. Most sandwiches are under $10; most steaks at about $15. All bottles of wine $20.
wdc:
Hello again, it's me with the handicapped parking..thanks for answering my query. we're going on friday afternoon, does that change your answer any?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi D.C. Maura again. Well, I think it might make parking more difficult. You might try giving Smithsonian visitors services (202/357-2700) a call . In the meantime, I did find this online map of available handicapped parking for the Smithsonian. Again, lots of luck. Hope your family enjoys it.
20005:
Just saw a surprisingly good free exhibit the other day. Was walking to the Fresh Fields at Logan Circle and passed the Carnegie Institute building. Happened to see some people out on the front steps, so looked more closely (this building is usually one of the mysterious ones on 16th Street...know what I mean?) Turns out the place has this really cool, unusual exhibit on the history of itself and science in general. If nothing else, it's a great chance to see the inside of an impressive building.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, 20005, the Carnegie Institute is quite a find. Thanks, tipster.
Ballston/Arlington, Va.:
My boyfriend just proposed under a blossoming cherry tree on Friday and now we are looking for a nice ceremony/reception space for the spring 2003 wedding! We would like it to be in the northern Virginia area and seat approximately 175 people. Any suggestions from the gurus or the peanuts would be awesome!
The Going Out Gurus: Not only are you two romantic enough to get engaged amidst cherry blossoms, you're also wise enough to start working on booking a place a year ahead of time. Nice work, Ballston. I (Jen) have a couple of suggestions for you, with the proviso that these places may be a little on the pricey side. I don't know what type of budget you're working with, but if you have some flexibility, consider these spots: Meadowlark Gardens in Vienna makes a perfect ceremony/reception spot for a spring wedding. Am not sure if it can accommodate 175, but you can call and ask. You also should explore George Washington's River Farm in Alexandria. With an outside tent, you should be able to fit 175, plus you get lovely springtime views of the Potomac River. I know there are brides-to-be and former brides out there, so if you have other ideas, speak now or forever hold your peace.
Washington, D.C.:
What's the deal with Foodbar DC?
The Going Out Gurus: The best deal at Foodbar DC, Washington, is the two-for-one martini happy hour from 5-8 in the 30 Degrees Lounge. If you're asking about the restaurant/lounge/dance club itself, it's a cool three-level gay hangout. They're doing drag bingo and shows there, plus a retro dance party on Tuesday night. I (Fritz) have been in and had a good time. The drinks upstairs are strong and cheap, even if the DJs can be a little cheesy and predictable on weekends.
20017:
Love the chat, gurus! But I need HELP! Any ideas where in town one can find the equivalent of an open-mic night for performance art? I think I have this great routine with cello wrap, orange sherbert, and a trampoline; but alas I'm all dressed up (or not, as it were) with no place to go! And don't tell me to start in a park -- I tried that once already, and let me tell you bail money doesn't grow on trees! How does a starving artist get a break in this town?
The Going Out Gurus: Rhome here, and I've run into the same problems as you but since I'm a VERITABLE performance artist, I don't let worries of public decency and running afoul of the law come between my muse and I. It was a struggle trying to bumrush stages around town with my act that consists of a kazoo, the Hakuna Matata song from Lion King, and strategically placed Gund stuffed animals. I found that the drunken hoardes in Adams Morgan or Georgetown hail my creativity with street dancing and many dollar bills. I suggest you, like I, take what you want and don't wait for a break. It's the only way to immortalize your work. Just don't let me see you on my street corner.
DC:
i'm jealous! i was outta town on monday,
and missed TWS at the 9:30. how was
it?!
i also need your help (of course)...my
landlords are getting married in a few
weeks and since they're new to the
district i'd like to get them a very DC
oriented gift, but am having trouble
coming up with any ideas. i'd like to
spend no more than about 30$ and i'd
like it to be something they can actually
use (like a gift certificate, not a snowglobe
with the capitol building in it) any
thoughts? ideas? suggestions? they're in
their late 20s, early 30s if that helps.
thanks so much gang! and happy
thursday!
The Going Out Gurus: It's Kate and the White Stripes were kicky, DC. The third number was a plaintive cover of Dolly P's "Jolene," and it set a deeply cheeky standard. Did they play 20 two-minute songs in a row or thirty? You won't miss them next time, will you.
As for the gift certificate for a rental at or some premium fresh-frozen crabcakes from Dean & Delucca or the George Washington initials brass trivit from the shop at National Museum of American History. The Chuck Brown and Eva Cassidy CD? A two-four of Old Heurich? Anyone else have an idea for a DC-themed wedding gift for $20-$30?
The Awakening:
Hey gurus, pop quiz: What's the best way to get to Hains Point? Is there a Metro stop nearby or do I have to drive? And, is there anyplace convenient for a bite to eat and/or a frosty beverage? Or alternatively, can I bring a picnic and/or cooler there? Thanks a bunch!
The Going Out Gurus: You're going to have to drive. I (Rhome) have found that even when the nice weather brings out the throngs, you can still find a spot. You just have to get in before a certain time because they close the road to vehicular traffic in the evening. Anybody out there recall what time that is? Head to the golf course to cop a beverage, but better yet, bring along that cooler and sprawl out by The Awakening.
Arlington, Va.:
I drove by Pentagon City this morning and noticed a carnival was set up. What is it? It looks like fun.
Also, I'm thinking of ditching work one day next week. What would be the best day for that, and are there any suggestions of cool things to do. I like the idea of doing the Mall thing but without the weekend crowds. Then perhaps a picnic with fellow work-ditchers.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington, Anne here. The carnival, located behind the Marriott hotel and between Army-Navy Drive, Eads Street and Fern Street, is a fundraiser for Arlington Community Foundation. It opens today and runs through April 14. It's a buck to get in, then you have to buy tickets (about 12 for $10) to pay for your rides. Hours are 5-11 Monday-Thursday, 5-midnight Friday, noon-midnight Saturday, 1-11 p.m. Sunday.
On playing hookey, all our best ideas are at your fingertips. Use the Entertainment Guide calendar (top right of the page) to see all the events for a single day. But, really, I'd check the weather forecast to pick the day. Then check Maura's list of recommended exhibits on the Mall. Then read this story for supplies for packing your picnic basket or find a place to spread your blanket.
Washington, D.C.:
When do the restaurants in Annapolis and Baltimore start serving crabs? I know they're summertime fare, but wasn't sure when the season officially starts. Any suggestions on where to go when it does?
The Going Out Gurus: On the coast you can pretty much get hard crabs all year round. The soft-shell season begins mid April and if you're interested, colossal "whale" soft shells have arrived at Sushi-Ko and are selling for a measly $13 a piece.
Fairfax, Va.:
Heading to the Corcoran next Saturday for the big Jackie Kennedy exhibit.
I am looking for some recommendations for a place to have lunch beforehand, and dinner afterward. We don't mind taking a Metro ride or walking.
What would be your top recommendations?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Fairfax. My (Maura's) frequent stop before and after a Corcoran visit is Teaism on H Street; On your way from the metro to the Jacqueline Kennedy exhibition and perfect for a light lunch. If you're willing to splurge on dinner you could walk to Teatro Goldoni or Kinkeads. More moderate might be a walk or short metro ride to Dupont (Bistro du Coin, Thaiphoon, Pizzeria Paradiso).
Jen on Penn:
Hi gurus! Here's my question - I have a bachelorette party on saturday night and we were planning on going out in the Midtown area. I was just told that there is a pub crawl that same night and I would like to avoid places that might be really crowded. Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Jen, this is Jen. (You have no idea how many times in my life I have said that; there are too many Jens in this world.) My suggestion is this: avoid midtown. The Cap-City Bar Crawl is one of the biggest ones of the year, and pretty much all the bars in that area (Rumours, Mackey's, Sign of the Whale) will be jammed. Reconfigure your plans and instead try hitting another section of town, like Adams Morgan (it will be crowded, too, but at least not with pub crawlers), U Street or Georgetown. There are still plenty of bars to hit in those areas, and you won't feel like you're competing with the crawl crew.
Nonprofitland:
Gurus,
Opening Day has provoked the softball bug buried in my office mates. Do you know of formal corporate/organization based leagues around town? It seems like this should be simple enough, but Yahoo had nothing to share.
The Going Out Gurus: When we had this question before, we've tossed out a pitch to the crowd. Chatters, can you take a swing?
Washington, D.C.:
Has anyone heard about the new Bar on 18th Street in Adams Morgan called Reeses? What is the vibe there? I heard it opens this weekend.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. This is Fritz, and Reef is currently open to the public. I was in last night, and it's a fabulous bar located in the old Star of Siam restaurant. They've only got one floor open right now (there will be three, including a rooftop), and it's done in an undersea theme: cool blue walls, pillars that resemble coral and - the best part - six huge fish tanks brimming with aquatic life, from lionfish to shrimp, rest on dividers between booths and on a table in the middle of the room. You can have a beer and just watch the creatures swim around.
Speaking of drinks, be warned that Reef has no bottled beers, no Budweiser, no Smirnoff Ice. Cool Belgian styles on draft, though. The menu is small.
Reef has made use of those floor-to-ceiling windows, with tables that face out onto 18th Street, so you can watch people wandering between bars.
It's a great bar - my latest favorite 18th Street spot. And it will be packed this weekend.
Arlington:
Has anyone been to the new place in Clarendon, called "Woodside Grill" or something like that? Across the street from Whitlows and next to Faccia Luna? Looks kind of out of place for that area, but I'm wondering how the food/atmosphere is.
The Going Out Gurus: I (Alexa) haven't been yet, but I'm excited about the Boulevard Wood Grill that's owned by the Faccia Luna people and is right next door.
Tired of the same old thing:
First Thursdays - when to when and
where?
The Going Out Gurus: TOTSOT, I (Maura) think we have you covered, but are you looking for First Fridays or Third Thursdays?
Washington, D.C.:
I vaguely remember being in Asylum (on 18) and having a happy hour special of 25 cents beer for a half hour, 50 cents the next hour, etc. Do you know if and when this happens?
The Going Out Gurus: Every Saturday afternoon, Washington. Starts at 6 p.m. with Shiner Bock for a quarter, and the price goes up $.50 every hour. It's a great deal if you're trying to get your pre-drink on.
Re: Wedding Locales:
Check out Gunston Hall Plantation--home of founding father George Mason--near Mason Neck, VA (South of Mt. Vernon, north of Woodbridge.. near Lorton)
I had a beautiful outdoor ceremony in one of their many gardens, and then a nice dinner in the reception hall. 175 might be a squeeze (esp for sitdown), but it was beautiful.
Also they will do tours of the planatation as part of the package so your guests will have something to do while you're taking pictures.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the suggestion.
Northern Virginia wedding:
My husband and I got married back in 1998 and had the reception at Gunston Hall. The space was great, and our out-of-town guests really liked the grounds and tour of the house. Very pretty drive there, too.
We had some problems with the event staff, but I heard that a lot of staffing changes were made after we had our event.
It's worth checking it out. Despite the staffing problems, it was such a fun day and everyone still tells us how much fun they had at our wedding, that it just wasn't another faceless hotel reception somewhere.
(and it wasn't expensive at all, compared to other places in the area)
Woodlawn Plantation also allows events, although they were a bit more pricey and restrictive with food and drink.
The Going Out Gurus: Another vote for Gunston Hall; hope our cherry blossom bride sees this. Thanks.
cadillac jack:
any word on the new grill place on wilson across from whitlows?
looks kinda trendy inside,
The Going Out Gurus: Cadillac Jack, see above. We haven't been up there yet.
Pet Sitting:
I've never used one of these, but one of the cat newsgroups I read recommends checking http://www.petsitters.org/ to find a pet sitter. The ones listed here are insured and bonded. You can enter your zip code and it lists 8 in the DC (20008) area.
The Going Out Gurus: Bless all the cat newsgroups! Thanks P.S.
anywhere:
you guys are pretty knowledgeable, keep up the good work
The Going Out Gurus: Anything for you, anywhere.
Dupont Circle, DC:
I'm taking a couple clients out after work today. We're looking for a stylish bar with good drinks and food. Any ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: Right around you, Dupont, I (Fritz) would recommend Toka Cafe, Topaz or Bar Rouge for stylish drinks and bar nibbles. For something more substantial, try Teatro Goldoni or Cafe Citron.
college park:
a friend is coming down from baltimore to go dancing....we're into latin salsa/cumbia/merengue, she's into soul/funk...we both hate techno....any clubs that nicely mix both of our tastes?
I Wanna Dance!
The Going Out Gurus: Terps represent!
Terp Rhome here, and you're hard pressed to get both of those styles in the same place in this town. Zanzibar is as good a try as any though.
Silver Spring, Md.:
I will be celebrating my 30th birthday at the end of May and one idea I had was to invite friends and family to a fun DC locale for drinks, but I am not sure where and how to do it. Won't I go broke if I just open a tab at a bar? I would appreciate any ideas from the social gurus out there.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Silver Spring. Maura here. Going broke depends on how many friends and family you want to invite. There are plenty of bars around town you can rent out for larger crowds. Many won't charge you a fee if you run a high enough bar tab, but this may take you to the going broke level. Take a look at our party locations roundup for locales and give a few a call. You could always just buy a couple of rounds, you know. Your nearest and dearest will probably want to treat you, birthday girl.
RE: Capital City Bar Crawl:
Can you give us the details?
The Going Out Gurus: Sure. You can find them all here. The only special is $2 Budweiser, but it's for a good cause.
Watching Fido..:
Two suggestions to board a dog-
Dogma (202)543-7805
Friendship Hgts Animal Hospital on Brandwine.. I don't have the number
The Going Out Gurus: Good dog! Oh yes you are! Oh yes you are!
For Ballston Bride-to-be:
I'm getting married at Woodlawn Plantation in Alexandria near Mount Vernon. Ceremony outside in front of the beautiful house and reception under a big tent in the garden. Because you tent the garden, it can accomodate as many people as you like. It's about $2500 to rent it. It's a great site. Also, you can use any caterer you like which is a big plus.
The Going Out Gurus: Ah, the belle of Ballston!
Arlington, Va.:
I want to learn calligraphy so I can address my own wedding invitations. Know of any place that offers lessons or workshops? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington. This is Anne. Arlington County only offers calligraphy classes in the fall -- call them at 703/228-7200 to find out the schedule. If that's too late, you might check at a local college. Other ideas?
Petworth:
So, is Reef Brian's new place? (Brian from Bedrock?) I have been hearing rumors about this, and haven't seen him to ask, so... Fritz? What do you know?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Petworth. Former Bedrock Billiards bartender/manager Brian Harrison was there last night, "acting like it's my wedding again," in his words. He and his partners have been working on the place for ages - doing the carpentry, etc. themselves - and it looks fabulous.
wdc:
I'm going to HR-57 tonight--is there anywhere within easy walking distance to grab a bite to eat before the show? Also, if we want to drink, do we need to bring our own beer?
thx.
The Going Out Gurus: Rhome here, and here's your chance to do some scouting so to speak. I've gotten several testimonials to El Paraiso but haven't dipped in there yet. If you try it before I do, come back and report! I believe HR-57 has a liquor license now but they still allow you to bring your own sauce. You just have to foot a corkage fee.
Washington, D.C.:
Here's a random question for you: I can't figure out who else to ask.
I am planning to get married this summer and am trying to find out how to go down to the courthouse or find a justice of the peace to marry me in D.C. Do you have any idea?
If I believed the movies, there should be some little room at the court house where i would go stand nervously in my pillbox hat and pretty suit, while the judge marries tons of couples in short 10 minute ceremonies. Was that only true during WWII or in the movies?
Thanks for any info. you have.
The Going Out Gurus: Jen here. Most courthouses still have marriage ceremony rooms, and D.C. is no different. Civil ceremonies are performed at the D.C. Superior Courthouse. All the info you need can be found here: www.dcbar.org.
If you choose not to get married at the courthouse, when you get your license, ask if they can provide you with a list of local justices of the peace. Good luck!
re: Reef:
is this a dance place or just a bar? anything happening there tonight? do they have a website or is there a review or an article on it anywhere on the web?
The Going Out Gurus: It's just a bar. No room to dance. It's open as usual tonight. It just opened, and I (Fritz) am working on a review today. Should be up soon.
wdc 20036:
Anybody know when the local farmers' markets are going to pop up? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: wdc, it's Alexa. I can tell you right away that the Alexandria Farmers Market (among one of the country's oldest I believe, and a great one) goes all year round. I go most weekends from early Spring on and can report that it's already in pretty full swing. Dupont's Sunday market is up and running and this weekend promises pea shoots, spring onions, green garlic, bok choy, arugula...and so on. (How good am I, exactly?) The Post comes out with its annual list in the next week or two so keep an eye peeled.
va bride:
okay-this is the second suggetsion I've given today-I should get a prize!
Va bride should look into lansdowne in leesburg, va. They have nice outside space and can accomadate that number of people. It's pricey though.
The Going Out Gurus: I knew the Got Plans? bridal posse wouldn't disappoint. Thanks for your suggestion.
re: Northern Virginia Wedding:
Another great place for weddings in Northern Virginia is the Barns of Wolf Trap -- beautiful buildings, although I'm not sure how many they seat. Also, we did Maggiano's for our rehearsal dinner, but I know they do receptions as well.
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) looked at Wolf Trap when planning my wedding as well. Good suggestion and, if I remember correctly, reasonably priced. Thanks.
Washington, DC:
is acropolis open yet?
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here, DC. Acropolis had a soft launch on Monday and Tuesday nights this week, and I don't know when they'll open the doors to the public. I didn't go, but I was given an impromtu tour last Friday afternoon. After 17 months of rennovations and major investments, this Greek-themed glamour puss looked like it need at least another week/ten days before opening. And when it does, Acropolis will brag the longest bar in the city, a DJ booth (the plan is to clear dinner tables), a trio of private rooms available via elevator, a humidor, and a membership-has-its-priviledges policy. I'm not sure what the nightly cover for plebs will be. Tentatively the menu is sushi and some meze plates, but I didn't speak to the chef. The decor is mainly cool white stone, blue velveteen banquettes and a regrettable mural of Pegasus. Any one go earlier this week?
Alexandria, VA:
Hi gurus,
Please tell me, is State of the Union officially closed? Also, has Acropolis opened?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I type this as the tears well up in my eyes, STATE IS GONE!! IT IS DEAD!! *shudders uncontrollably*. That was my (Rhome's) spot, so many hot live shows, on both sides of the stage for me. DJ's Taek-One, Dirty Handz, Bill Source, Oso Fresh, hot house music in the back and powder on the floor. Red paint that ruined your kicks and a ceiling held together with garbage bags. I'm glad we gave it a proper fairwell though. Management is currently eyeing properties around town to re-launch State but I don't know how they're fairing. And in other news, Acropolis isn't open yet, but Kate is rarin' to go.
jimmyjamesdc:
Gettin the ole wisdom teeth out tomorrow and forseeing a weekend without solid food. My question is that of smoothies. Does anyone know where I can purchase an above average smoothie so my grill can recover? Thanks and have a great thursday...
The Going Out Gurus: Ouch, JJDC, we feel your pain. Actually I (Maura) still have my wisdom teeth so I guess I don't. I do know that I usually pick up a smoothie at Fresh Fields. Any other readers have smooth moves to share?
Forever the Romantic...:
In response to the bride-to-be who was proposed to under a cherry tree... my comment would be to carry out the cherry blossom theme in the wedding if at all possible. Wedding go-ers love to hear how he "popped the question" and litte cherry blossom reminders here and there will be great coversation pieces at the reception as well as a wonderful memory for all in attendance. Few suggesions, just off the top of my head.. since the wedding is in the spring.. see if you can get cherry blossoms in the bouquets/boutenairs/corsages; cherry blossoms in the center pieces at the reception (slight Asian theme would be nice here too); very light pink color scheme for the bridal party (at least brides' maids dresses.. maybe not for the guys).
Best of luck!
The Going Out Gurus: This doesn't suggest a venue, but the theme idea is a good one. Between the lot of us, we could probably plan the happy couple's wedding in time for next spring. (But we're not going to, so don't even think about asking.)
DC:
Teasim on H street is closed on the weekends, so would be inconvenient for the corcoran exhibit-goer
The Going Out Gurus: Yikes, I thought they were only closed Sundays. Thanks, DC.
Washington, D.C. :
My brother is in town and I want to take him to a upbeat bar/grill or restuarant for happy hour and dinner. Do you have any suggestion around the Capitol or Chinatown?
The Going Out Gurus: Washington, If I (Alexa) were you, I'd go to Bistro Bis on Capitol Hill. It has a dishy little bar and a swank restaurant. More towards Chinatown is Jaleo. You might like it there too.
Where? Where?:
Ray's the Steaks isn't in the Entertainment Guide and doens't come up in Yahoo yellow pages. Where in Arlington?
The Going Out Gurus: No, naughty me (Alexa). It's not in the database yet, but is at 1725 Wilson Blvd, next door to the Village Bistro and Guajillo. 703/841-RAYS.
Fairfax:
Visitors from out of town this weekend....they want to go to the British Embassy to sign the condolence book for the Queen Mum. The Embassy website doesn't have any information about hours, etc...do you have the scoop? Also, I know it's not near Metro, so looks like we'll drive. What's the parking situation like up on that end of Massachusetts? Thanks much!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Fairfax, this is Fritz. Members of the public can sign the condolence book from 8am-5pm on weekdays through Tuesday.
Parking is bad, bad, bad at that end of Mass Ave - because it's next to the Vice President's residence, you can't park in the lot unless you have an embassy ID or membership card. If you have to drive, try to find a space over behind the Vatican's embassy and walk over.
Bethesda:
For the pet-sitter: Friendship Something-or-other on Brandywine St. near Tenleytown metro did a great job babysitting my friend's very large dog when she came through town. You could pay extra if your pet needed extra walks and they are a very clean and friendly and reasonably priced vet/kennel.
For the handicap parker: If your parents are interested in the FDR Memorial, there are always empty handicapped parking spots there, it's easy to navigate (very flat) and you can catch the cherry blossoms.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. If you mean Friendship Animal Hospital, I (Maura) can say they were always very sweet to my favorite pooch.
As for the parking, I think the cherry blossoms are going to make it tough all around, but an excellent tip. Thanks.
Alex, VA:
OK, a potential toughie--I'm dragging the boyfriend to the cherry blosson/japanese festival madness on Saturday (it's good to play tourist sometimes, right?) I expect we'll be hankering for some cheap beer and eats afterwards; is there any place in the downtown/mall area to be a late Saturday afternoon barfly? I work and play in Dupont, AM, and U street, and am 100% unfamiliar with the downtown area. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Ok, Alex. Not tough at all. The cherry blossoms by the Tidal Basin are a trek from the street festival on 12th Street, especially in the slow-moving mob pace. I (Anne) would recommend taking our printer-friendly map with you and packing some sustenance/buying a snack from a street vendor before you get to the festival. Once there, though, I wouldn't worry about eats. There will be 30 sushi masters, in addition to tons of performances and workshops. To sit down out of the crowd, there's several chain pubs nearby -- Cap City is a good bet. For a few more blocks walk, take him to Gordon Biersh.
Downtown DC:
Any idea if the movie promises is coming to dc?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, DC. This is Kate and I'm going to see it tonight at "a href="http://eg.washingtonpost.com/profile/1026723/?&flavor_id=1&context=movies"Promises" -- you can come too, but you'd better act fast. Visions is hosting a round table of Arab and Israelis afterwards and tickets are going fast; there were fifty left as of noon.
"Promises" is a documentary about the lives of seven kids in Jerusalem. (It also had the uneven fortune of being heavily promo'd by "60 Minutes" and losing the Best Documentary Oscar to "Thoth.") "Promises" should be in residence at Visions for at least two weeks.
another way to enjoy the cherry blossoms::
Just wanted to put in a plug for the cherry blossom 10-miler that takes place this sunday starting at 8 a.m. Please folks, come out and cheer us on... the miles seem to go by much faster when there's a big crowd there to motivate you... there's a handy website, www.cherryblossom.org that has the route map....
The Going Out Gurus: Go Cherry Blossom 10-Miler runners! The Post will have a swell map for you in a few days.
handicapped parking, etc.:
This poster is aware that the musuems close around 5, right? If s/he waits until Friday afternoon, they won't get to see anything much. I don't know how disabled her Dad is, but my husband walks with a cane - slowly - and it would take more time to get from the car to one museum to make the trip worth it. Friday traffic being horrendous, too, I'd urge them to re-consider a Sunday morning trip, and not have it turn into a frustrating experience because of walking difficulties.
The Going Out Gurus: Actually, Air and Space is open until 5:30. Sounds like they are only doing one museum, so let's hope they have enough time.
Wash DC:
The girls from work (mid 20s-early 30s)want to go out and have a boyfirend/fiance/husband venting session some evening. Seeking a place (Dupont, Foggy Bottom, maybe Gtown, would consider other in-town places) where we could go for after work cocktails, maybe coffee, maybe food, and chat without loud music, pickups, smoky bar or college crowds.
Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Men. they're just the worst, aren't they? I (Jen) have a few suggestions, and maybe others have more. If you want good margaritas, pina coladas (yum) and the whole enchilada, go to Lauriol Plaza. If you want to dish in posh surroundings while drinking expensive martinis a la "Sex and the City," try Bar Rouge. I know you said you didn't want a smoky bar, but wouldn't it be fun to play with stereotypical gender roles and diss your men while puffing on cigars? If you agree, then head to Ozio. I'm sure other ladies out there may have ideas, so let's go, girls.
Dupont Circle:
Hi Gurus,
My friend's birthday is tomorrow and she wants to go out dancing. Where is a good place (besides Dream) that a diverse group of people can dance to hip hop?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Dupont. This is Fritz. Did you see our massive story on dance clubs in the Weekend section last Friday? In the course of researching the story, I (Fritz) would recommend The Saint or - don't laugh - Crush and Chief Ike's Mambo Room. I would have said Five, but it's closed for renovations.
Washington, D.C.:
Do you guys know of any places that offer reasonably priced art classes or workshops?
The Going Out Gurus: Try Glen Echo for reasonable art classes. The Corcoran has some wonderful ones, but I (Maura) think they're a bit pricier.
smoothies:
The best smoothie i have had is at wrap works, i know o two locations one at reston town centre and one on 17th street in DC.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, those are delicious. Yum.
Cherry Blosson bride to be:
To go along with the theme suggested, do the National Arboretum or the Botanic Gardens or some of the other spots that may have cherry blossoms allow special events like this?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) know the National Arboretum does not allow weddings, though the wedding party can have their photos taken there for a fee. Not sure about the Gardens, but that might be worth exploring.
Petworth:
Well, it was warm the other day, and I am holding out hope that it will warm up and stay warm soon!
So, I eagerly await enjoying the outside at Island Jim's with drinks, and am contemplating where I should be thinking about dining outside. Any ideas of fabulous places to dine al fresco?
(We tried the outdoor thing in the garden (I LOVE THE GARDEN) at Firehook in Cleveland Park the other night. Boy, has service and food quality declined there! And I don't want to give up the garden! What's a girl to do?)
The Going Out Gurus: Petworth, Petworth, Petworth. Surely you -- as loyal frequenter of these chats -- know how to plumb the depths of our magical database. As a refresher, I suggest that you type the word "patio" into the search box and see what happens. It really is a magical thing. (And yes, Island Jim's is open). AB.
Beer downtown:
John Harvard's at 13th & Penn is a great place to grab a brewski ... they have a sampler of five beers for about $8 I think that'll leave you feeling nice & toasty. I'm pretty sure they're open weekends.
The Going Out Gurus: Five for eight!
Wolftrap/VA Weddings:
Now that you mention wolftrap, there is another less known site nearby.
http://www.nvrpa.org/meadowlark.html
Meadowlark, I believe has the wedding gazebo thing going.
jandy
The Going Out Gurus: Handy, Jandy.
Re: Smoothie:
Jamba Juice at Fresh Fields is the place to go. I became addicted to them in California and was thrilled to find Jamba Juice at Fresh Fields!
The Going Out Gurus: Yes.
spa for men:
to the gentleman looking for waxing... isn't there a new spa for men only that opened recently. I can't remember the name though.
The Going Out Gurus: Anyone know? This is Kate and I believe M.J. was spotted going in and out of Universal Spa at Van Ness not too, too long ago.
Softball for Nonprofitville:
You can always join a county league (I know Fairfax has one). There are various skill levels, and there are some corporate groups involved
The Going Out Gurus: Here's the pitch.
DC:
any word on the club VIP or VIP club on F street where DC Live used to be?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, DC. Abdul (owner of Platinum) is basically ripping the place apart to create this new club, which some are already comparing to the downtown Dream. They've promised a full renovation of all the floors before it opens - probably in May. It's going to be more for "grown folks" than the college crowd DC Live was attracting. That much is clear.
Pet sitters:
we have had much luck with Sit-a-pet, in the Virginia area. Not sure how price-minded they are, but is anything too good for Mrs. Winkles?
The Going Out Gurus: Anything but a first name, it appears. Thank you very much for the tip.
Washington, D.C.:
I know you get tons of Bachelorette Party questions, but I've got one on the bachelor's side for you. What is there to do apart from the typical bar hoppin' and strip clubbin'?? I had thought about going to get some crabs at Cantler's (when the weather turns; we're a few weeks away), snagging some rooms at a place down on the water, and hitting some townie bars on the Shore. If that idea doesn't go over, how can we be original in the city?
The Going Out Gurus: Your Cantler's idea sounds like a good one to me (Jen). I mean, who doesn't like crabs and beer? If you have to stay in town, though, I suggest picking some kind of theme and building your own pub crawl around it. You could do a dive bar theme (hitting places like The Raven), or a tiki theme (Politiki's, Island Jim's, etc.) or a brewpub theme. It makes things a little more interesting and may introduce you guys to places you've never frequented. Make sure you have a sober driver or plenty of cab fare. And, of course, use our Web site to help you pick the pubs.
For the Trampoline Man:
I remember there being a open mic night
at Madams Organ on Sunday evenings. It
was quite an experience. Everything from
comediens to guitar players.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, and occassionally tricky Alan Nu doing his slight of hand too.
because you know everything:
can you name an example (e.g., artists) of urban retro grooves?
The Going Out Gurus: Urban Retro, Neo-Soul, Urban Contemporary.... blah. We all hate labels (at least I do, Rhome that is) but with music they're usually a necessary evil. I'll go with you on this one. Let's see, do these folks have to evoke some 60's/70's sensibility? Try Donnie out of Atlanta, reminds me of Donny Hathaway. He's on Giant Step records. Glenn Lewis has a Stevie Wonder-like voice but not really a retro sound. You got your D'Angelo's, Bilal's, Musiq's and Maxwell's that evoke Marvin, Al and Sam to varying degrees. Some compare Erykah Badu to Billie Holiday. Throw Jaguar Wright in there for a little bit of Millie Jackson. Comments from the class?
Silver Spring, MD:
That party locations roundup is a great resource. I especially like the sound of Gordon Biersch Brewery because I am German American and know many Germans in DC.
Danke!
The Going Out Gurus: You should go check it aus.
Washington, DC:
Is there an optimal time of the day to go to the Zoo if you want to see the baby tiger, elephant, etc. playing?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi WDC. Kandula, the baby elephant, does get a bath at 10:30 a.m. The elephant house doesn't open until 10 and closes at 4 p.m., so I'd take that into consideration. Note that Berani, the baby tiger, is now playing outdoors.
Check out our just updated zoo babies gallery for a sneak peek at more newborns.
For Wedding-ers:
The aforementioned Carnegie Institute also rents its space for weddings. I attended one there last year! Incredible rotunda.
The Going Out Gurus: Another tip, brides and grooms.
Beer downtown:
Don't get too excited ... they come in little juice-sized glasses. About 5 oz. each. Still a darn good kick though!
The Going Out Gurus: You're right, BD. Most downtown brewpubs offer these sampler platters for around $8 - a great idea if you've never visited before or heard of the beer styles. I (Fritz) like the samplers at Cap City and John Harvard.
The Going Out Gurus:
Rhome peeking in... I gotta jump into this smoothie discussion. Drink a concoction from Smoothie King in College Park and you'll feel like Popeye eating a can of spinach.
leaving DC.... :(:
Hi Gurus-
After 5 years in our fair District, I am moving to NewYork. The boss is taking me to lunch next week, so I get to play with some money that doesn't belong to me - where should I go? I work near the White House. I've been to Galileo, Kaz, Equinox, Bombay Club, Olives, Daily grill, Vidalia, Sesto Senso, Cafe Asia, and all the steakhouses. What is left for a girl to eat before she's gone forever? Somewhere in Farragut or Dupont.
Talk about picky.
The Going Out Gurus: Wow, you're pretty snazzy. We'll be sad to see you go. Have you been to Citronelle, Picky? It's on the edge of Georgetown, but would be another nice notch for your belt. Or Johnny's Half Shell in Dupont. I (Alexa) love it there.
re dog sitting:
Friendship hospital for animals has super boarding. Theres a bunch more too in the phone book under kennels...but friendship is my fave..theres also fliers in my safeway for people who house sit pets..
The Going Out Gurus: More helpful hints.
Arlington, VA:
Spa for a male wax: The new men's spa is Grooming Lounge, but I don't think a Brazilian is listed on their price list. Being the female recipient of a brazilian recently, I have a word of warning -- be prepared to be humiliated by bending your body in ways you've never before and hold your breath!
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here. Arlington, thanks very much for the name and the tip. I talked to the manager at the Grooming Lounge (202/466-8900) and yes, they do it all, if you do.
Ocean City, Md.:
A bunch of 30-somethings are headed to the beach for the weekend, any suggestions about what we can do for fun on a cold weekend?
The Going Out Gurus: A lot of bars and restaurants in O.C. are open for business now, at least on weekends, so you could be able to find plenty to do. Fager's Island is open year 'round and it appears that Seacrets is open now, too. (Yes, the place is a monument to tackiness, but man are those dirty bananas good.) Looks like Mango Mike's on the Bethany boardwalk is open now, too. I'd also encourage you to take a walk along the O.C. boardwalk and maybe even drive down to Rehoboth to see what's cooking down there. Above all, enjoy the peace and quiet on the beach because in six weeks, the crowds will come.
takoma park, md:
My husband and I recently discovered the joys of driving in from the burbs then biking around downtown on the weekends. We'd like to see the cherry blossoms and street festival this Saturday, but where could we find parking at around 10 a.m.? Isn't there a parade going on, as well as a huge amount of tourists?
The Going Out Gurus: Would you consider taking your bikes on the Metro? It's permissible all day on weekends and parking is going to be difficult, to say the least.
Washington, DC:
A friend is having his 21st birthday. We want to go out, but not at too much of an expense. Cover charges arn't exactly our idea of a good time. Any ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: Have you considered Saturday's bar crawl? Making your own crawl around various neighborhoods? Going out drinking shouldn't really be a problem - in Adams Morgan alone, Brass Monkey, Common Share, Adams Mill Bar and Grill, Peyote Cafe, Hell, the upstairs lounge at Chief Ike's, Toledo Lounge, Asylum and the Reef lack cover charges, and I think the Reef is the only one where a beer will set you back more than $5.
Fairfax VA:
For the bachelor party talking about picking up crabs ... how about going a step further and getting a fishing charter boat? You can catch your dinner, cook it up, eat it and then head out on the town. Find a weekend rental in, say, Annapolis or Baltimore and go all out.
The Going Out Gurus: This is an excellent idea. Thanks, Capt. Fairfax.
Washington, D.C.:
Do you know of anyplace around D.C. where you can race go carts? How much does it cost?
The Going Out Gurus: I'll spot you these I found through searching and raise you one track in Crofton and another in Bladensburg/Riverdale. I would provide more details but we're almost done for the day, that should get you started
dc:
i have a friend who's in the peace corps visiting me tomorrow for the afternoon, where can we get a nice meal and just talk? not too expensive and quiet enough to sit and chat for awhile
The Going Out Gurus: Kuna? Little Fountain Cafe? They've both worked for me (Rhome) recently.
peevishly wrestling with faith:
Okay, you've taken a wedding suggestion from me and a pet sitter suggestions from me. I've been a good citizen; I wasn't kidding, does anybody know a lutheran church on the Va side with good music?
peevishly wrestling with faith
The Going Out Gurus: Is it better to give or receive? We're wrestling with more than faith on this one. Why don't we ask the class to talk this one home with them and return with answers next week. Would you all have a think and write in next Thursday?
20009:
I have some friends coming into town for the Dave show tonight, and even though I am not going to the show, we all want to hang out and have drinks before hand. Any suggestions for chill, unpretentious places where we can sit down and toss some back in the vicinity of the MCI Center?
The Going Out Gurus: Fado, the Rock and the Irish Channel should all fit the bill.
college park:
many moons ago i went to an incredible club: $10 cover, but all you can drink (bad rum and cokes, i rememeber), butwhat made it really awesome was the music: 2 live bands, one old school R & B and soul, each in a different room. the place was not glitzy at all, and was somewhere downtown i remember. i cant remember what it is called. HELP!
The Going Out Gurus: Was it at the Ritz? DC Live? We're blanking over here.
Alexandria, Va.:
amg: Hi Gang! I'm a tad bit new to the area. Are there any cool planetariums in the area? Once the evenings here get nicer, I think that would be a lotta fun. Ideally in the Virginia and D.C. area. any ideas would be helpful.
The Going Out Gurus: You're in luck, Alex. This is Kate and I as much I have enjoyed the Einstein Planetarium at the National Air and Space Museum, I'll probably love it a little bit more when it reopens (with a sponsor's name) on Saturday.
Requests from my visiting dad:
My dad will arrive in D.C. to visit my husband and I and my sister on May 20 and is staying for at least seven days. He's made two requests that have stumped me. He practices a regular weight-training program and asked if there were any low-cost gyms close by. I live on the Hill and my sister lives at CUA (but classes will be out by the time he arrives). He's a senior and suggested senior centers, but I don't know where any are. I checked the YMCA, but you have to be a member to use their facilities. I also checked D.C.'s Department of Parks and Recreation, but it's hard to tell what the centers actually offer. Any suggestions?
His second request was for a day trip into "the country." We don't own a car, but I remember some articles in The Post about trips like this using Metro rail and/or bus. Where can I find that article? Or did I imagine it? If I did, does anyone have some fave destinations?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, RFMVD. I (Anne) think you've checked out the best already. The cheapest day pass I could find was $15 at Gold's Gym (the Capitol Hill location is 202/554-4653). Sadly, I'm not very optimistic about DC Parks and Rec helping you. I guess he's staying with you and not at a hotel that could help him? Is it worth becoming a Y member? Can he live with just situps and pushups? There is an exercise trail through Rock Creek Park, with chin-up bars and such.
On the day trips, I think you're imagining the story that I want to write. For now, you could try out the programs that have cars at Metro stations that you can rent by the hour. The WMATA-sponsored car-sharing programone is flexcar, and the commercial one is zipcar.com. If you try it, tell us what you think. Favorite destinations are Frederick, Md., and the Shenandoah -- check out tomorrow's Weekend section for a story. But there are other green places to get to without a car: Rock Creek Park, the trail along the Potomac in Virginia, Roosevelt Island.
Doggy walkers for Capitol Hill:
Check out www.metropets.org for lots of info for pet owners in the DC area, including a listing of dog walking services. I live in Arlington and use doggywalker.com and they are great, but most services only do limited areas.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the insight.
Fairfax:
Hey, gurus. My mother-in-law is coming into town this weekend, and she wants to see the cherry blossom parade. Any tips? What's a good viewing spot? How early should we aim to arrive? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Fairfax. The National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade starts at 9:30, but if it's nice weather, I (Anne) would expect a big crowd. If your family's the kind that can rise early and enjoys walking, why not start really early to swing round the tidal basin. These days, it's light out around 6 a.m. Then find a spot on the curb for the parade? It runs from Seventh to 17th streets on Constitution Avenue. Or, I think you can still buy tickets for the grandstand seating through Ticketmaster.
Washington, D.C. wedding gift:
I work in a bookstore and I am looking right now at a book a customer has yet to pick up: Above Washington: a collection of nostalgic and contemporary aerial photograph of the District of Columbia.
We list it for $30.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, please take the rest of the afternoon off!
Washington, D.C.:
I've recently been introduced to martinis, and now I can't stop! Some call it a problem; I tend to call it fun. Anyhow, who serves up the best martinis downtown?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. I (Fritz) was just putting together of great martini bars for some other reason, and here's what I had: 1223, Aroma, Bar Rouge, Felix, FoodbarDC's 30 Degrees Lounge, Gazuza, Ozio, the Palm, the Round Robin Bar at the Willard, the Saint, Sam and Harry’s and Toka Cafe. That's a start, at least.
Manassas, Va:
I'm taking a couple of teenage girls to see the Dave Matthews Band concert tonight, I was wondering if there something that is fun and interesting just to chill, laugh, have a good, memorable time around the Metro area before and/or after the concert. Thanks!!!
The Going Out Gurus: Here's our list of downtown restaurants. We always like Jaleo and Austin Grill -- though I (Anne) expect many other concertgoers might have the same idea.
Weddings, engagements, etc.:
Okay, not to be snarky, but could the Post
do an online discussion each week just
about weddings, engagements and the
like. It seems like between the Gurus,
Carolyn Hax and the Travel chat, that's all
these online disucssions have become,
one giant wedding planner.
The Going Out Gurus: We love love. And maybe we'll be ready to take it to the next level sometime soon -- but how much closet space would be have to give up? Thanks for all the hot tips. Please join us next week.
