The Going Out Gurus:
Good afternoon and welcome to the love chat. (Cue the Barry White music here). Yes, we'll be answering Valentine's Day questions as well as anything else you throw our way. I'm Chuck Woolery (a.k.a. Jen) and I'm your host today. All the Gurus are here, so let's get the love connections started.

FRIED ICE CREAM:
For the person who asked last week about fried ice cream -- you have to try the fried chocolate (served on ice cream) at Taqueria Poblano. It's on Mt. Vernon Ave. in Alexandria. The rest of the menu is great too, and the cook/bartender is also the owner. A nice neighborhood place, with good drinks. Enjoy. Alexa: I love it there too. Gorgeous duck tacos, and fish ones and nice little 'extras.' A cheer for the Taq.

Any ideas on where to go to eat with a bunch of relatives - maybe as many as 12 adults and 10 kids ranging from 1 to 14?
Not too pricey, toddler friendly, not so loud you can't hear the conversation if you get stuck at the end of the table.... People are coming from D.C. and Takoma Park.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Alexa: I might suggest somewhere like Cafe Deluxe, Chef Geoffs. Or how about Mexican -- Andale has a separate room that would suit your group.

Hey GOGs - You must know this - I often notice a VERY long line forming outside of 1223 during happy hour time during the work week (can't recall which day of the week). What is this line for? Is it really for a happy hour and if so, what are they giving away in there?!
Fritz: You're probably thinking of Wednesday, when the popular Flirt happy hour entices crowds of African-American professionals with an open bar from 6 to 8 and a dinner buffet at 8. Is it crowded? Yes. Is it worth it? Ohhhh yes.

My mom and aunt are coming to visit this weekend and I would like to take them to see some of the musuem/art exhibits going on in D.C. My aunt cannot walk too much, so we will probably only get to one or two. What museum/art exhibits are currently going on that you would recommend not to miss? Thanks so much! Maura: If you can wait until Sunday, there are two great shows at the Naitonal Gallery -- Ed Ruscha and Andre Kertesz (the former opens Sunday, the latter opened last week). The two shows are adjacent to one another on the 7th street side of the museum's west wing, so there shouldn't be too long of a walk involved. And both are really stunning. You can sneak a peek at the Kertesz with our photo gallery.

Hi GOG's!
I'm submitting early in hopes that you'll get to my
question. My significant other and I are doing something a
bit different to celebrate V-day (and my B-day, which
coincide) -- we're going to NYC for the weekend. While
we're there we'll be going to a Broadway show, which
leads me to my question. I haven't been to a show in
about 15 years and have no idea what to wear! It's a
Saturday night performance. Is this within your area(s) of
expertise? Any suggestions for both me (female) and my
significant other (male)? Can he wear corduroys? (It's
going to be difficult to talk him out of jeans!). We'll also be
going out for dinner and drinks with friends before and
after the show so I want to feel comfortable doing that
too.
Thanks! Janet: Going out to theater in New York City on a Saturday night is not what it used to be in terms of what you have to wear. You will undoubtedly see people in jeans, but if I were you I'd take it up a notch and wear something less casual. I think cords for your boyfriend with a sports jacket would work. For you, since you're celebrating your birthday and Valentine's Day, why not wear something festive???

My grandma recently gave me our family's ONLY copy of my grandparents' wedding picture from the early 1930's (it's the only wedding picture that survived three fires!). Know of any good but also reasonably afforadable store that could restore the picture and could make additional copies from the photo itself? THANKS SO MUCH for any suggestion!! Janet: That's so sweet. I love those old pictures and realize how important it is. Recently I took a picture of my husband's father (when he was a child)-- same sort of nostalgic thing -- to MotoPhoto in Bethesda. I talked to a woman there who said she could restore it and make copies, and she was true to her word. The picture looks better than ever. Word of caution: I also took an old honeymoon pic of mine, and the restoration job was not so hot. I think that was because water had been spilled on it and left to dry. Anyway, ask what they think they can do, and if it's anything less than great, don't leave it with them.

Can you suggest a romantic Italian restaurant for a Valentine's Day dinner? I was thinking of someplace where we could have dinner for two for less than $70, plus drinks. My girlfriend has spent a lot of time in Italy and I was hoping to rekindle some memories. Thanks!
Alexa: Are you wanting one in Alexandria? If so, I always like Ristorante Geranio.

Hi--
Are there any places in D.C. or surburbs that have Asian-style karaoke? That is, private rooms for four to 10 people, each with its own machine rather than a giant room?
Fritz: Ah, Noraebang. I don't think there's anywhere in D.C., though there's one spot in Wheaton that's Metro-accessible. If you have a car, I'm particularly fond of Cafe Muse.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Where, dear Gurus, is the best afterwork hamburger in the Dupont area? Needs to have beer too, thanks!
Fritz: Helix. And it's half-price before 7 p.m., as is the beer. (Some people like the half-price burgers at Childe Harold, which are particularly good with bleu cheese.)

Hi, I was wondering if there was any word as to the specifics of a "very, very special live guest performance" that is listed at Five's Web site for this coming Saturday.
Thanks!
Fritz: It's the final performance by the Dubtribe Sound System -- literally, the final date of their farewell tour. Expect the place to be PACKED with househeads.

I just wanted to let you know that Kavanaugh's Pizza Pub is exactly the same as Faccia Luna. The long-time manager of Faccia Luna in Glover Park bought it from the franchise, so legally the name had to be changed. The management, staff and most importantly the food is all the same. Prices haven't even changed! The only major difference is that they now serve brunch on the weekends and also have a deep frier, making the menu that much better! Alexa: Yup. I'm with you. I love the old deep fryer.

Hey Gurus! This isnt really a "going out" question, but I thought I would give it a shot anyway, since you guys are so knowledgeable and really know what you're talking about! For Valentine's Day, I would love to get some private golf lessons for my boyfriend. However, I know absolutely nothing about the sport, so I don't know where to look for this. Do you know of any places in the Northern VA area that offer package lessons? Thanks so much for your help, you all are great!
Joe: Hello Fairfax. I just had a dream about golf two nights ago. Must be the warm weather earlier this week. A great resource is washingtonpost.com's Golf Guide. That gives you the big picture and has listings of all the courses in the area and contact information for golf pros at those courses. East Potomac Golf Course (better known as Hains Point) offers relatively inexpensive lessons. 202-554-7660. Any other duffers want to recommend a place?

What's the scoop on Chloe? Did it take over the Saki space?
Fritz: I didn't go to the grand opening party last night -- I usually skip those things, as they're so crowded -- but I'm going to check out Chloe this week. I do know that it didn't take over Saki, but I might be happier if it did.

Hi -- Thanks so much for all your info. Being pretty new to the area I appreciate it! Quick beauty related question -- Where can I get a cheap manicure/pedicure -- like the $20 deals in NYC. I dont need to go to a super fancy spa ... but still havent found anthing for less than $35-$40. Thoughts?
Janet: Hi, there, CP,
I empathize; yes, the NYC deals are great. But here's one we found -- City Nails that might do the trick for you.

My mom is coming into town this weekend and I'd like to take her to an amazing dinner in D.C. on Saturday night that won't break the bank. Somewhere with GREAT food and hip/fun. I was thinking Rosa Mexicano or Zola ... any suggestions??
Alexa: Or Zaytinya, or IndeBleu or Poste or Oyamel (across the river in Crystal City). All those would be fun and hip bets.

Would you agree that D.C. could use a few more quality neighborhood bars/restaurants that combine QUALITY food, good beers, and good TVs for watching games? I'm talking neighborhoody places, and excluding chains from the dicussion (i.e. ESPN zone and Champps). The suburbs obviously have all the chains (i.e. Champps, Bungalow) but I just feel like DC-proper has a lack of neighborhood places that provide the quality game-viewing experience. I'm talking about neighborhood places where one can watch several games at once while still enjoying good beers and great food that is above the standard "bar food" level (such as Park Bench).
The only place that fits the bill (that I know of) is Bricks in Cleveland Park (they have about 10 flat screens). We love Grevey's but it's too far out there. If only Reef had TV's! What are your thoughts?
Fritz: I agree with you. In the meantime, you might want to try this trio for food, drink and basketball: the Ugly Mug on Barracks Row, which has 10 flatscreens and (on my visits) better miniburgers than Matchbox; Porters' Dining Saloon, at 19th and M; and Tonic, in Mount Pleasant.

What advice can you give for going to Berkeley Springs for some rest and relaxation in March? Do you know anything about the Coolfont Spa/Resort?
Thanks!

I am missing my flag football and softball games these days. Where can one find information on joining sports leagues (after-work or weekends)in the D.C. area?
Anne: Sportsleagues, for one, has a teams for six sports, including football and softball, and the DCJCC league fields a softball team. A lot of teams come from work or school contacts. The East Carolina University Pirates, for example, have an active sports league.

Know of anything going on for all the singletons of the world on Valentine's Day? Not looking for a place to do a big dinner ... just somewhere a little hip to have fun cocktails and a lite bite with other friends that are flying solo. Do not want to hide in the house and wallow ... want to have fun!
Fritz: Good for you. I'd say the best thing you can do is avoid all the pre-packaged restaurant parties and hit a fun bar, like Helix, Rouge, Gazuza -- maybe the old-school rock party at Cafe Saint-Ex ... Singletons, where are you spending the 14th?

For after-work burgers: Hamburger Mary's. Wash down with Mary's Milk, their beer. Half price on Tuesdays and amazing burgers. Just don't be scared of gay men!

Love you all!! So I have a friend that is coming into town this weekend for her birthday. What are some things that we can do? Any exhibits that are a must-see? Also, what bar/clubs will be playing hip hop on Saturday night?
Thanks so much for the suggestions!!! Maura: Some of the best exhibits in town are the afore-mentioned Kertesz and Ruscha shows at the National Gallery, but you might also try the Isamu Noguchi retrospective at the Hirshhorn. That one just openend yesterday. If you're interested in design -- or just want to get off the Mall -- there are three shows that might suit you: Designs for Public Spaces at the Building Museum, Frank Gehry at the Corcoran and Doodles, Drafts and Designs at the Octagon.
Rhome: Do you have any preference for type of club? Big and flashy or small and low-key? Or you can just pick through this rapid fire list: Modern, Dream, Home, Juste Lounge, and Republic Gardens. Those are all skewed towards the jiggy. I'd take Modern as the top choice there. Currently the only non-mainstream spot for hip-hop on a Saturday nights is Step Up Saturdays.

Alexandria, the second best Italian restaurant in DC is located in Manassas. Try Pannino's. The best Italian restaurant is Maestro. Dont worry about the menu at Pannino's, wait for your wait person to tell you the specials. They have a seafood ravioli and buffalo cappracio(sic) to die for. The dessert cart is worth saving room for. I travel to Italy regularly on business and have tried all the others in the D.C. area.

Just wondering if any chatters know if it's possible to burn CD's at any local music stores? I know Starbucks has it in other states, but not here yet. I want to make a compilation CD for Valentine's Day and don't have a burner of my own.
David: I'll throw this one out there to the masses, but I haven't come across anything like that around here. I know that Starbucks had to delay its initial launch because of some bugs and other issues, so I'll be curious to see if it becomes a full-scale reality for them or anyone else.

Hey Gurus,
This is my first Chinese New Year celebration. What can I expect Chinatown to be like this weekend? I was hoping for a parade and a street festival, but that may be only in the movies.
Thanks a ton!
Anne: I'm glad your cinematic dreams can come true, because, in fact, the Chinese New Year Parade has everything you seek. There will be lion and dragon dancers and even a five-story firecracker. Of course, Chinatown in D.C. is certainly not the San Francisco or Manhattan variety -- there's a Hooters, after all. But the festivities this weekend are the most elaborate around.

Have any advice?
Thanks so much!
Rhome: No need to pre-emptively diss yourself. There are always good dancers around, but that's how you learn, either by watching them, dancing with them or having them lead group lessons. Anything on this list should suit you fine. Then you can start working these into your regular rotation.

I'm looking for a Valentine's Day present for my boyfriend in the $40 or less range. We just bought a house, so I would like to gear the present to be something for the house.

For the person looking for an inexpensive manicure/pedicure. Red Nails in Arlington Virginia charges like $22 for a ped and around $30 for a manicure and pedicure. It's a little rundown, but they do an amazing job and give really good leg and feet massages and spend ample time on making you feel good even if there's a line. I would suggest calling ahead of time so you don't have to wait.

Cheap pedicures:
Speaking of pedicures, am I the only one who has this problem? The cheap places tend to "buff" the nail w/ sandpaper-like buffer before they polish and I end up with very scratched up nails (once I remove the polish). Are there cheap places that won't do this? Are my nails supposed to be scratched?!?
Janet: I'm not sure I've heard of this happening. Anyone else?

Joe: I think you should ask him to marry you. He'd be so surprised. And it'd make for a Valentines he'd never forget. Of course, he'd probably get a restraining order as well. So scratch that. Any readers have good, unique suggestions for Arlington?

Okay, so I don't need help for Valentine's Day. My guy and I are probably going to hit up the restaurant of our first date. But I also know some ladies partaking in some black heart cake as they watch "7th Heaven The Musical." Ah yeah. Don't knock it until you try it and find yourself walking away and laughing uncontrollably. My question is regarding tomorrow night. Any ideas for a fun Friday night in Old Town or Arlington? Or anything not to be missed in the city? No clubs. We're proud to be nondancers. And don't tell me where to get a haircut. Check the archives, folks.
Fritz: If you like live music, head for Las Tapas in Old Town; I like Duende Cameron, who performs rumba and flamenco music there on Friday and Saturday nights. Mix that in with some happy hour snacks and cocktails at Cafe Salsa or some karaoke at Rock-It Grill, and you'd have quite an evening.

Do you guys read the D.C. music blogs that are out there about the "scene"? There are a bunch and they all seem to contradict each other. Are there any you recommend for either good information, good taste or pure humor whether intentional or not? Links please!!!
Al Gore
Rhome: You know, I've never really read them. Care to toss out any specific ones? The few I've seen smelled faintly of being driven by an agenda, that clique'ish type vibe. I'm a big fan of staying up on the calendars of the local venues and going out regularly to check out stuff you've never heard. Most bands have websites with mp3's, or you can always preview material at washingtonpost.com/mp3. And if you stay tuned to this space, you might just see a new blog. Hmmmm...
Joe: Not a blog really, but I regularly amused by the discussions in the 9:30 club's forums page - especially when they are all bashing each other. The one problem I have with many of the local music blogs I've read (I won't name names) is the obsession with indie rock...and only indie rock. Gets boring pretty quickly.

As you know, Visions used screen the shorts, but now that it's gone I'm not sure if anyone will pick up the tradition. Gurus,
The wife and I have decided to avoid the masses on Valentine's Day and start a tradition of preparing a romantic meal. I am looking for a good place to get inexpensive oysters (not cheap oysters, but good oysters inexpensively). Also, we were thinking about doing a bubbly tasting. Who has a good selection of variously priced sparkling wines? Finally, can you recommend a good chocolatier? Preferably places in D.C. or Northern Virginia.
Thanks again, you guys are the best!
Alexa: I can help. Slavin's on Glebe just off 395 will have your oysters and I love Slavin's. And Kingsbury will have your chocs. As for the tasting, I might got to the Daily Planet on Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray. You'll be in the area anyway.

Not cold enough, Washington, D.C.:
I just moved hear from Utah and, well, there's no snow!! Not to say we need snow, er, well maybe I do. And the stereotype is true, I'm a huge ski bum. Are there any mountains in this area that are worth a trip? I figure I'll take the wife for a V-Day black diamond tour of the mountains in this area. (if there are any)
Joe: As someone who has never skied downhill, I've drafted our online travel editor and former professional skier (not really) Ben Abramson to answer this one. Here's his response:
Hey 'Not cold enough,' your question has been passed to me, your friendly neighborhood online travel editor Ben. I must warn you first that you'll have to shed your Utah standards quickly to enjoy skiing what we call mountains in the mid-Atlantic. That said: For a day trip, Whitetail (not far from Hagerstown, Md.) is your best bet, but don't expect anything approaching expert terrain. My favorite resort in the region is Blue Knob in western Pa., but it's a 3 1/2 hour drive from D.C. and the facilities are fairly spartan. For a combination of nice lodging and a decent mountain, try Seven Springs, Pa or Snowshoe, W.Va. Use this handy interactive map for a rundown of your driveable options:

Thanks GOGs! MWA! Maura: Denied?! We just don't have time to get to every question, but we try. That said, LP, you can find cheap wine by the glass at L'Enfant and Mon Ami Gabi for starters. I was at the latter a few Tuesdays ago and the deals ran until 9:30 (along with some great live jazz), but I think they've since scaled back on the hours. Every other Tuesday at Grapeseed, you'll find healthy-sized flights for $20 (Fritz swears it's a great deal).

However, her flight home leaves Sunday afternoon so we won't be able to see the parade. Are there any other Chinese New Year festivals/parties that are going on either Friday night or Saturday that we could go to? Thank you in advance.
Anne: The Fair Oaks Mall celebration is near you, and if it's half as extravagant as the one I've seen at Lakeforest, you'll have a culture-full shopping trip. Or, go for a truly authentic meal. Two Chinese restaurants I'd recommend for are the Peking Gourmet Inn, apparently a fave of the elder President Bush, and China Garden, oddly found on the second story of the old USA Today building in Rosslyn. It's a huge space, with a charming host.

I just tuned into the online station and they were playing "White Wedding" by Billy Idol, so I'm a little thrown off.

Fritz: The Champagne happy hour -- a k a "Bubbles For the Ladies" -- will return soon, I'm told. Here's an article I wrote about Firefly's "Wine Down."

As 'between'-age-19-20, single, white, and female college students, my friends and I wanted suggestions of upscale places to go on Friday or Saturday nights in the Alexandria-D.C.-Baltimore area. We don't want to have to worry about walking into a gay club or urban-style club - hence the opening description! Please help!
Thanks.
Rhome: Yeah, we wouldn't want you to worry about catching "the gay" either, you know it's going around! And with Usher being nominated for Grammies and such, it's nigh impossible to have a good time without being coerced into getting krunk. Times sure are hard for the upscale fun-seeking SWF these days.

I bought tickets for "Romeo & Juliet" for a friend's birthday. Any suggestions on places for dinner around there or easily accessible by Metro? Money's not a primary concern but she's a vegetarian.
Maura: Ah, one of my favorites, the nearby Montmartre might do. I'd call ahead, just to check on the vegetarian options, but they should have something to suit you both.

Hi gurus - do I have a question for you! If you are dining at a restaurant that allows you to bring a bottle of wine to drink with dinner, how exactly should you bring said bottle into the restaurant - just in your hands, in a bag? I know this is a lame question but I don't want to look like I'm arriving to a kegger or something. Thanks!
Alexa: How's about one of those interesting-looking, neoprene (!) wine bags that people are talking about. Even if you don't think you know neoprene, you will when you see it. I did.

Does anyone know of a good hair stylist that's not too expensive in the Clarendon area of Arlington?
Janet: How about Pentagon City? The consensus on Bubbles is that it's pretty good. May be worth a try.

Rhome: Is this Vicki the GOG den mom? Hearty thanks indeed to folks who have paid attention over many years of grinding in this town. Got some unreleased heat to debut on the show tonight!

My boyfriend and I want to learn to ballroom dance. I have decided to surprise him with lessons for Valentine's Day. We are both total beginners who want to be able to dance at some upcoming weddings. We are interested in a weekly ballroom dancing class. A group lesson with other couples. I have about $200 to spend on this. We'd like to start immediately and take the lessons through the month of March. (He has to go home to the UK April 1st) Something near us would be great, but we are OK with Metro-ing/driving someplace as well. Please help, we want to be able to do more than the YMCA and the Electric Slide at his friend's wedding.
Anne: I think we can hit this one on all counts. Victordance offers ballroom dance right near you, in the Washington Opera building. There are still openings for the beginner group class starting Feb. 23, and it's $49 per person for five weeks. Call 202-422-6250.

I know you have answered this, but can you give us an update about getting into the Spy Museum? What is the latest we can show up on Saturday and hope to get in? Thanks!
Maura: I can't promise you one safe time. It varies on the crowds week to week. What would I do? I'd get there before noon. You can probably risk it up to 2 p.m., but I haven't been on a recent weekend. Anyone out there stood in that line lately?
One thing to keep in mind, the museum is extending its hours on the Sunday of President's Day Weekend. They'll be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the 20th.

Is this what the poster is asking about?
http://www.archives.gov/national_archives_experience/visit/screening.html
Jen: Actually, this is even better than the old shorts program because it includes features, too. Thanks so much for sending this; I'll make sure we get all the information in our listings as well.

About the happy hour at Firefly...is it discounted drinks or just new additions to the menu?
Fritz: Discounted drinks, although in this case, the discount means you're "only" paying $8-10 a glass.

I'd like to take my girlfriend out for a great time Sunday or Monday for Valentine's Day. Do you have any recommendations for events, activities or restaurants that are elegant, gay-friendly and relatively inexpensive? I've looked into a hotel or B n'B, but can't seem to find much in our price range.
We love music, the outdoors, being active and good food.
Anne: I bet some of our ready-made date ideas may appeal: perhaps ice skating at the Sculpture Garden and some fare at the cafe afterwards? Elegant, inexpensive and sporty is a rare combo, but this is one place that can pull it off.

This is kind of a sensitive issue, and I don't know if you have any suggestions, but here goes: I'm a black woman with a white boyfriend. If we check out that Saturday thing at Bohemian Caverns, are we gonna get glared at? Are there any venues for less-than-mainstream hip-hop with an eclectic crowd you would suggest?
Rhome: A bit of personal advice: Nosy self-righteous jerks are everywhere, I'm sure you know this. It seems you haven't yet figured out that you don't have to answer to any of them. If it's not Bohemian Caverns it's going to be on the train or at the mall or wherever. Can't predict where they'll show up, but if you have a blanket coping policy then you don't have to think about it. Life is too short to let folks tell you how to live it!
That being said, patrons of the underground hip-hop scene are generally more progressive. Anything I/we suggest here in that vein should lead you to folks you'll be comfortable around.

Hello Wise Gurus,
I have a question and hope you can help me. My boyfriend LOVES golf but he is not from the area so he does not know any reasonable golf courses with driving range. We have done the Hains Point thing several times but he hates it. Is there anything closeby, within say 45 minutes drive or so, that is nicer? It's OK if it's a LITTLE pricier than Haines Point. Thank you guys soooo much!
Joe: Hello Rosslyn. Again, here's washingtonpost.com's Golf Guide. It is a very cool interactive tool. Drag your cursor over the map of the region and it'll will highlight the different courses and price/phone number, etc. A few I can recommend are Cross Creek, the University of Maryland's course, Bowie Golf and Country Club and Timbers at Troy. Those are all in Md. But look around on the map, I'm sure you'll find something near you.

Hey, do you guys know any service that sends flowers in a vase on the cheap? 1800flowers, etc. are too expenisve..
Maura: I think you'll have to deliver them yourself to get cheaper than that, especially this close to Valentine's Day. Any chance you can deliver them in person? You'll save a little (Trader Joe's has great flowers!) and she might be happy to see you.

A good, low-key V-Day idea: Since you've only been seeing this guy for a month, how about putting together a bunch of classy-yet-easy appetizers (nice cheeses, meats, olives, loaf of fresh bread), opening a bottle of wine, and watching your (or his) favorite movie? It's a good chance to see another side of the other person and spark some good conversation. It can also get as romantic as you'd like it to be....
Maura: Another nice idea. You folks are so clever today.

Submitting early cause I'll forget! I need a good place to go out for my b-day next weekend for a young 20s crowd either in the city or Arlington. Preferably somewhere we can dance that has a good young crowd but isn't so packed you can't breathe. I've had suggestions of: Modern, 11th Street, and Dremo's. Comments on those and any other thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Fritz: Modern: Good music, nowhere to sit/congregate unless you reserve a table, mid-20s, early-30s crowd.
Eleventh Street: Great lounge atmosphere, cool decor, decent drinks, no space for fancing, popularlity means you and your friends may stand together if you get there late. No room for dancing.
Dremo's: Kinda gritty, great beer (no hard liquor, I think), pool tables, room to spread out. Whether you can dance depends on the DJ.
You didn't say what kind of music you were looking for, but I'd recommend Mantis, the renovated Blue Room, maybe Felix.

Rhome, we haven't discussed your name in a while. Can I name my son Rhome when I have one? This won't be anytime soon, so I don't think you would have to worry about running in the same crowd.
Rhome: I might have to ask my momma. She "invented" my name. Does one really need permission for such things though?

I understand that the local news stations and newspapers play softball against each other in the spring.

My plans for tomorrow include calling a gay teenage friend to drive my rollover-prone, gas guzzling SUV using the HOV-3 lane of 395 into Arlington, ride Metro into DC while simultaneously eating McDonald’s french fries and loudly swearing at my lawyer to file a lawsuit against the fast food chain for causing my obesity, catch a red-light-running DC taxi and get overcharged using the Zone system, and arrive at the White House press room in my droopy pants to ask some softball questions. Care to join me?
Joe: Depends. What are you doing in the afternoon?

Jazzy in Washington, D.C.:
I just got into town two weeks ago and heard about the GOGs, and I hope you can help me. I'm looking for neat places to go and listen to good, live jazz music in the city.
Thanks for your help!
Fritz: Twins Lounge (the one on Colorado, not the Twins on U Street), HR-57 and Mr. Henry's would be my choices.

I recently moved to the area, and have not been able to find a bar that resembles or even comes close to my favorite hang-outs in the area I moved from. I am looking for a bar that tends toward the small side, has a dazzling array of bottled beer, retro/ecletic decor, with free or cheap (but not live) music. Is there anyplace that fits this very narrow description?
Rhome: Tons of beer but less of the other stuff you're looking for:
Reef (great vibe/decor, dope djs), Belga Cafe, Brickskellar (more beer than anyone)
Less beer total, but good beer, with cool djs/jukeboxes and no cover charges:
Wonderland, Marx Cafe, Asylum
Something you should try that's right in your 'hood:
Quarry House (classic rock & country on the juke!)

The District, Washington, D.C.:
Any ideas for yoga or meditation type classes in the District. I'm sure there are hundreds, but I'm look for classes that mainly focus on breathing techniques and meditation. I've heard it works wonders for people with insomnia, so I'm anxiuos to start. Any ideas? I live by the Foggy Bottom/GWU metro, so anything Metro accessible is key.
P.S. WSC's yoga classes are not that wonderful.
Thanks GOGs
Anne: What a coincidence of a question, because I just started practicing my Ujjayi breathing this week. There's definitely lots of options -- you can ask at any studio for meditation classes. One idea for starters -- check the classes run by the Vajrayogini Buddhist Center in Dupont.

Washington, D.C. -- Smoke Free?:
GOGs,
First, I am a long time reader of your chat and appreciate your advice. Are there any smoke-free bars or restaurants in the downtown D.C. area? A group of us are looking for a place to take our co-worker out for her birthday; however, said coworker is allergic to cigarette smoke. Any suggestions?
Thanks and keep up the good work.
Rhome: Slim pickin's without heading to Montgomery County.
