Got Plans?
The Going Out Gurus
of the washingtonpost.com Entertainment Guide
Thursday, July 29, 2004; 1:00 p.m. ET
Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Happy Thursday, everyone. If you haven't heard already, Live on Penn is no longer. Sigh. But the Gurus are up and running. Jen, Joe, Fritz, Anne, David, Rhome and Maura (that's me) are at the ready. We're trying a new discussion system on this end, so be patient with us today. Here we go...

Has anyone been to an event at the Hotel Lombardy? I am looking to put together a luncheon for about 15 of my girlfriends in November and was hoping for a comfortable place with couches and maybe a fireplace. And someone recommended the Hotel Lombardy, since they apparently have catering rooms that fit what I am looking for. Thoughts?
Maura McCarthy: I've heard good things, but haven't been myself. Chatters?
Otherwise, I might try the Jefferson. -- Maura

Open Mike:
Looking for some free open mike comedy and poetry readings. Where can I find them in NW DC? Thanks! Rhome Anderson: The question is more like where can you NOT find them. They're all over the place. Start here. On Sunday I was walking by Staccato and was invited off the street to their 'Comedy Kumite', a single elimination comedy tourney. I don't think that's the only comedy even they have there, give them a call. The Sunday slam at Teaism is still the strongest all around poetry spot around. Any others are going to be more specific to culture, style, crowd, etc.
Fritz Hahn: 'Comedy Kumite' is monthly at Staccato -- I'd rely on the helpful dcstandup.com Web site if you want to give stand up a shot.

Washington, D.C.:
Gurus,
I apologize if this is the 1,264,398th question on the topic, but what is going on with Live on Penn?
Thanks! Fritz Hahn: Check out my story here, Washington. They won't say it's just poor ticket sales, but the reference to Lollapalooza and the "sluggish" concert season makes me think they just weren't getting enough people who wanted to pay $7 to stand on the pavement and watch Better Than Ezra and Sister Hazel.
Also, the competing Sessions at Merriweather couldn't help -- Big Boi, Evanescence and Method Man is a little bigger than Tonic.
David Malitz: The cancellation is surprising considering how popular the series was last year, but looking at the lineup you can see why it happened. People just aren't going to get excited about going to see bands that had one hit on DC101 eight years ago.

East End, Washington, D.C.:
I'm resisting the urge to write "submitting early because . . . " because you know I'm submitting early and you probably don't care about the reason, huh? I feel ya. Anyway, after Fritz's glowing report (and honesty about the weekend crowds) at Blue Gin, I've decided to take a friend who will be visiting from the Left Coast this weekend. If we go around 7 on Saturday is it likely to be crowded already and will we have to pay a cover. We'll probably hang out until 9 or 10 before heading elsewhere for some dancing. Fritz Hahn: If you go early, East End, you can sample the excellent cocktails and snacks without too much hustle and bustle. That's the way I like it -- I was at the bar last night, not getting bumped or having my delicious Hemmingway Daquiri splashed on my shirt.
There's no cover until 10, by the way, and you have a better chance of getting upstairs if you're in early.

Fairfax, VA:
Hello! Need your help. I have a relatively large family and we'd like to go to Ocean City for a three-day weekend. Which hotels/motels would you recommend for a family that has a seven-year old, as well as a 70-year old?
Jen Chaney: Hi, Fairfax. Naturally, it all depends on how much money you'd like to spend. On the more expensive side, the Lighthouse Club Hotel at Fager's Island might be nice. It's on the bayside, though. On the ocean side, I believe the Carousel rents hotel rooms as well as condos. That's in a convenient location and much closer to the beach. If others have suggestions, please chime in.

I read some where about a park showing movies this weekend. I think at least Harry Potter and Shrek. I thought it was Bannker Park but I am unsure. Do you guys know? Thanks
Jen Chaney: You're thinking of the Comcast Outdoor Film Festival in Alexandria, which runs Friday through Sunday in Ben Brenman Park. Friday's feature is "Grease," Saturday's is "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" and Sunday's is "Shrek."

I'm meeting up with my parents' friends' daughter, who I haven't seen in 15 years (since we were kids). The plan is to meet up at Dupont Circle on Friday night to hang out. I'd like to find a quieter place where we can have a small snack, not a full meal and head for a bar afterwards. Any suggestions? Thanks! Joe Heim: Have you tried Luna Grill on Conn. just below Dupont? I'm pretty sure that place is still there. They have a huge menu and you can choose from appetizers instead of a full meal. Or how about Teaism. Just above Dupont Circle. Fairly quiet and good food.

A group of my friends want to get together tonight to watch John Kerry's acceptence speech at the Democratic convention. Do you have any suggestions for places to go in the DC area where we can get food, drinks and a clear view of the tv?
Fritz Hahn: Washington, Rhome and I covered this in our This Week in Nightlife column, which is available every Thursday. Here's a preview: RFD has Kerry on huge projection screens. The $10 cover includes food and drink specials. The big party at Visions -- the speech followed by a conference call with veep-candidate John Edwards -- is sold out, but any unclaimed tickets will be available first-come, first-served at 8. Honestly, though, you should be able to hit any bar on the Hill. I saw Teddy's speech at Hawk and Dove while meeting some friends for happy hour on Tuesday. They turned the music off and had subtitles and everything.

Washington, D.C.:
Oh Gurus! Has the Outer Circle gone outta business? I didn't see any movie titles listed on the marquees when I drove past there yesterday. Say it ain't so. boo hoo.
Jen Chaney: I had heard that Outer Circle might close, and all appearances indicate that's what's happened. We have no showtimes for them this week, and when I called, the number was disconnected. Not surprising, I guess, since many new movie theaters have come into the city and several older ones have shut down.

Do you have any ideas on where a single 36 year female can go out in this town and have fun? I am so tired of the pretentious clubs and the collegy bars.
Fritz Hahn: Which places are you tired of? That might help us narrow the field a bit.

Help a girl woo her crush:
I'm playing hostess Friday night to a friend whose tastes run the gamut from blues to jam bands to alt country. I was going to take him to HR-57, but, almighty gurus, please tell me if there is something else I should make sure not to miss. Thanks! Joe Heim: Hello wooer. Hmm, HR-57 is pretty much of a jazz place, so not sure if that will meet your intended intended's taste. What about Iota on Friday. John Eddie is playing there. He was sort of a washed-up blue-collar rocker from the 80s (in the Springsteen/Mellencamp mold). But last year he put out a great alt-countryish/Americana record and he'll be with his whole band at Iota. I've become a huge fan of his and his shows are really what you want a live show to be. And if your woo-ee doesn't like it, just blame me.

Is Garden State playing anywhere? I thought it came out yesterday! Jen Chaney: It did if you live in New York. But don't worry, you won't have to wait much longer to satisfy your Zach Braff fix. "Garden State" comes out in Washington next Friday. In the meantime, you can pass the time by watching the trailer.

So I know I'm submitting terribly early, but I just heard that the Penn Ave Pourhouse is no longer going to be a Steelers bar and I'm about to cry! Please, please tell me that you know of somewhere else in town that will show all of my beloved black-and-gold's games!!
Fritz Hahn: Haven't heard yet. I've been to the Pourhouse this week, and they've gotten rid of all the 'Burgh decor (and all the tiki stuff downstairs). New owners wanted to change things around, which is their right. I'd imagine the Iron City Crew will have something set up in the next few weeks, and I'll try to sort it out for my annual "Where to Watch" story.

The Post used to have a column of comings and goings for museum exhibits. I and some friends do at least one "tourist" visit a month -I highly recommend this] and this was helpful to make sure we saw things of interest that were closing. I cannot find that column on the web site. Is it still published? If so, can you tell me how to find it on the web site. Thanks.
Maura McCarthy: It wasn't the paper doing a monthly column, it was me! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I haven't done one for the past few months as I've taken on some extra responsibilities (all good ones) here at post.com. Maybe I'll revive it for the fall, D.C. In the meantime, I'd see Sally Mann at the Corcoran and Gabriel Orozco at the Hirshhorn before Labor Day and catch the new show of Islamic Art at the National Gallery.

Just heard Live on Penn cancelled. Or should I say the Toyota Scion Live On Penn to give them one last plug. I was not pleased with how it was run this year. It quickly became overrun by corporate greed. Ridiculous food/beer prices and an increasing admission price to what was a free event was the bane. They advertise admission prices on website at a discounted rate if you purchase tickets online. Once you almost are through with the process they add on a service fee charge that ends up saving you 50 cents per ticket leaves a bad taste. I made the decision to boycott and apparently others did as well. Fritz Hahn: More thoughts of on the demise of Live on Penn, and trust me -- you're not the only one who feels that way.
Fritz Hahn: Oops. I should add, though, that Live on Penn was never free. A few years ago, we had a similar outdoor concert series called D.C. Sessions, and while that was free, it was run by different people -- the ones who are now promoting Sessions at Merriweather.

Day off in D.C.:
I have a rare weekday off tomorrow and was hoping to do a little outdoor reading/relaxing at a cafe. Any suggestions? Also, are there any farmer's markets open on Friday's (other than Eastern Market)? I'm willing to head out to MD or VA. Thanks.
Anne Kenderdine: Sounds like a dream, DC. I'm jealous of you. There's two Friday markets in DC, the D.C. Farmers Market, 1309 Fifth St. NE (202-547-3142) and the USDA market at its headquarters, 12th Street and Independence Avenue SW. It's hard to imagine who the Bethesda Farm Women are, but their cooperative has one, 7155 Wisconsin Ave., (301-652-2291). So does McLean, at Lewinsville Park, 1659 Chain Bridge Rd. And there's more -- if you're game for a longer road trip, check this list of markets. Happy shopping.

Blech. It is worse than hotel rooms at beach week in Key West.
Jen Chaney: Really? I stayed in a friend's condo there years ago, and it seemed fine. Of course, that was a while ago. And maybe the hotel rooms aren't as nice as some of the privately-owned condos.
Got another suggestion?

Cubeworld, USA:
I will truly miss Live on Penn. It wasn't as good as last year but I appreciated the mix of genres, local and national acts, the crowd and the ability to get right next to the stage for a cheap price. It got me into the city and we hit other places afterwards. I'd hit 2 out of 3 this year, last week's was great, and planned for most of the rest. The crowd seemed really big last week. They can't be that dependent on the admission fee at that price so what's the real story? Sounds like mismanagement.
Fritz Hahn: Here's the other take on Live on Penn, and we're getting quite a few of these.

What's the deal with this new Halo place? So far I've
heard that it has a pseudo-mixed crowd, there's no
smoking, and that the lighting is really cool. Do you
have a review? Thanks! Rhome Anderson: I talked about it last week actually, I had stopped by within 36 hours of it opening. I didn't see a mixed crowed, seemed to be 98% gay men. With it being across the street from Whole Foods and in the middle of a bunch of new luxury condos, it should be able to draw a mixed crowd, especially with the no-smoking policy. It's kind of in the cut though. Small sign, not readily apparent from the street. It does have cool lighting and that decor that's similar to Leftbank. We'll have a review when we can check it out more than a couple of times.

New Tryst:
Any idea when the new restaurant by the owner of Tryst will open? I drive by it every day on the way home from work and it always looks the same.
Fritz Hahn: I wish I knew. It's been through one or two deadlines, as far as I can tell, but it still seems like nothing's going on there. I'll see what I can find out.

GoGs, you are the best! Your advice is always so helpful. Quick question: tomorrow night, my friends and i are going to head over to the Black Cat for the DJ from the Roots show. Given we've never been there and given what you know about the show, do you think that the crowd/music will allow dancing? Thanks. Rhome Anderson: The whole point of this gig is to get folks dancing. Check This Week In Nightlife for more about this but in short, this night is about a big room dance club experience rather than the tight basement type feel of his last three dj gigs here (which were pretty fun actually, in that sweaty house party kind of way). ?uestlove plays a spectrum ranging from current hip-hop hits to the classic gems to a lot of vintage funk and rare groove, he's nice with the 80's selection too. Raheem Devaughn will be performing with his band before ?uestlove's set and after... yours truly. I'm starting to be known as "that dude that opens for ?uestlove". There are definitely worse things.

Movin' Out of Bethesda:
Hey GOGs -- After two years of living in Bethesda I'm ready to move out. Im looking to move somewhere in D.C. where I will be surrounded by people with the same interests (ie. going out, partying, nice restaurants,etc.). Does a place like this exist in DC? Im ready for a more exciting lifestyle change. By the way im a 30 yr old heterosexual if that makes a difference. Help me out please! Rhome Anderson: I invite everyone to check me on this if I'm wrong but I'm not so sure that folks in D.C. socialize/coalesce/bond by living in the same vicinity. I seem to see friends living in these NW apartment buildings and condos and they don't really connect with their neighbors. The more likely approach is to dive into activities with people that share the same interests as you. Another way to go about it is to move to a place with a lot of foot traffic that has social gathering options you're interested in. You can then become a regular at a certain basketball court, neighborhood bar, dog park, etc. The simple answers for this sort of thing are Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, Woodley, Logan Circle and the like. In short though, I would think that one would want to move to a place where one is comfortable with one's property and neighborhood first because all the partying and the people that enjoy it can be reached easily with little travel difficulty.

Do you know when Adams Morgan Day will be this year? The food, the bands, the people watching ... I can't wait. David Malitz: This year's Adams Morgan Day will be Sunday, Sept. 12. More details to come, but there will be the usual vendors, live music, kids fair, etc.

Missed the restaurant chat yesterday and just wanted to share a great Restaurant Week experience I had at Ardeo in Cleveland Park. The whole menu is available and quite good and our service was terrific. Also, we called the day before and were able to get a reservation for 6. We had drink next door at Bardeo and were pleasantly suprised at the list of affordable wines by the glass. I never hear about this place, but am quite glad I gave it a try.
Maura McCarthy: We like Bardeo too, WP. Glad you enjoyed it.

Hello, mighty gurus. This rude boy is wondering if Marx Cafe is having its monthly old school ska/reggae night tomorrow. I haven't been to Marx yet, but that's my kind of music. Is it the same kind of scene as Bukom? Thanks, mon!
Fritz Hahn: Yes. This is another event that we big-upped in this week's This Week in Nightlife. I really enjoy the Soundclash, but then again, I have all kinds of Desmond Dekker, Sons of Selassie and Honey Boy Martin on my iPod. It's free, and the tunes are rare and/or classics. As far as Bukom, well, this scene is a lot whiter and a lot more hipster. I'm not sure whether most of the audience goes there, although I'm confident the DJs do.

Do you have any idea where I could track down a trampoline in the DC/VA/MD area? (Not to buy, like most city residents I have no room...) The primary goal was to find a trampoline to practice snowboarding tricks during the warm months. But, if that wasn't permitted, I'd also enjoy just jumping around for a bit, a small flashback to my youth.
Anne Kenderdine: This is the kind of question we love. It does seem like there's an active trampoline community, but I kept getting answering machines. Try this link to a list of clubs to get started. Readers, what can you tell us?

Hey... enjoyed reading Joe's Old 97's review (and as a longtime fan, I love the feel of the new album), but just a wee correction... that's Murray Hammond in the glasses on the left next to Rhett (on Rhett's right, technically), not Phillip Peeples.
I am just glad they waited to cancel L.O.P. until AFTER I got to see those guys put on such a terrific show 7/10. Ditto the always fun They Might Be Giants this past weekend. This was my first year at LOP and I thought it was great, so I'm sad about the news... think it'll be No More next year? Joe Heim: hello LCDC. Glad you liked it and thanks for pointing out the error. I didn't even know a picture ran with the review, but you are absolutely correct. Hope those guys don't read the paper.
As for Live on Penn, no idea whether they'll try to bring it back. The lineups were incredibly uneven. Too many "where are they now?" bands. They have to do a better job of programming if they want it to be successful.

Red Line:
Bummer about Live on Penn! We have an open Sat. night for the first time in ages (what with all the weddings and such!!!) and would love to get suggestions on where we could hit the town. We're upper 20s and younger 30s, some couples and some singles, looking for good music, dance space for the brave, lounge space for the meek, classy "older" crowd (older than Lulus, that is) and preferably nothing too cover-costly (need the $$ for booze). We can go anywhere on the metro, G'town, downtown, Dupont, etc. but would like to stay in DC. Can you help us out?
Fritz Hahn: How about Blue Gin, Eyebar, Mantis or Air? There are four different bar/lounges with different vibes, but all meet your requirements. The only one with a cover is Blue Gin (just get inside before 10). Mantis might be a good one for groups, as those who want to just lounge can sip Asian-inspired cocktails on the patio while the brave go downstairs and dance to some of the best house music in town. Air's kinda huge, and the music can be, ah, questionable, but it's a quite the scene, with diverse clientele.

If I had a weekday off to sit at a cafe and read...:
I'd do what I've been known to do when playing hooky from work, and go to Teaism in Penn Quarter and get some bubble tea and then walk over to the benches around the fountain in the sculpture garden next to the National Gallery. Excellent spot to people watch and read, and you can sit in shade or sun. They also have a pretty decent cafe right there at the sculpture garden... Maura McCarthy: O.K., if you substituted chai and salty oat cookie for bubble tea, it would be like I wrote this one myself.

Gurus,
Where to find the city's best french fries? There are places in New York where you can get Belgian frites in a cone and order from lots of different dips instead of plain old ketchup. Do you know of anything similar here? Joe Heim: No matter the city, the best french fries are usually at McDonald's. But it looks like you want higher brow chow. So, according to Alexa, who unfortunately is not here today, the best places are Circle Bistro, the Bread Line and Poste. But you can also get good ones at Five Guys. And Cafe Deluxe. Anyone else want to contribute their favorite fries hideout?

Perm anyone?:
Hi GOGs, I love the chat! I admit this is a random question-I'm just not sure where to get this info. In Glamour magazine's August issue there was an article that said perms are making a come back with gentler chemicals and stylists are using less rods to get the soft, wavy look that's popular now. I was wondering if anyone has heard of any good salons around offering this. I have very fine, straight hair and would love to ditch my hot rollers...but I'm kind of afraid of perms and all that poodleness that might come with them. Has anyone heard anything about this or know any good places to go? Thanks!!
Anne Kenderdine: I'm so glad you asked, because I have this question too. Mags and runways tell us big hair is back, and even this year stylists have been telling me I should get a perm. But I can't shake those images of the seventh-grade frizz look either. Who out there has gotten a perm this year? Is the new wave for real? Let's hear about it.

Hi Gurus!
What's the scoop on the Hotel Monaco-- does it have a bar or lounge? My boyfriend and I have walked by several times after late dinners downtown and are intrigued, but haven't yet ventured inside to see if it has a cool lounge. On a related note-- what's the scene at nearby Poste like?
Many thanks!
Maura McCarthy: Hotel Monacco does indeed have a bar/restaurant -- called Poste. Just head straight through Hotel Monaco's front doors. The bar is in back of the front dining area. If weather permits, the courtyard is spectacular. And the drinks and snacks are pretty good too.

Hey! Can you suggest some "must do's" before the summer is over. Here are some things I've already done---beach, downtown festivals, screen on the green, canoeing on the potomac, tubing, all outdoor/rooftop bars. NEED SOME NEW SUGGESTIONS! Thanks.
Jen Chaney: You've been to EVERY outdoor/rooftop bar in the area? Have you tried Island Jim's by Catholic U.? That's a fun one, if you haven't visited yet. Some other ideas: The Outdoor Film Fest at Strathmore Hall (starts later in August); day trip to Annapolis or Baltimore; watching planes at Hains Point; shopping or dining in Old Town Alexandria ... these are just a few off the top of the 'ol noggin. I'm sure there are millions more.

County Fairs:
As a midwestern gal, I've gotta go to a county fair this summer...you know, stinky animals, elephant ears, draft beer, and a band. Which do you suggest? Since the beer will be flowing...the closer to DC, the better. David Malitz: The Montgomery County Fair is pretty close to D.C. and is usually a good time. I especially enjoyed the Demolition Derby last summer. The Great Frederick Fair is rather massive; there's even a new Birthing Center this year where you can see baby animals come into the world. If that's your thing. The Maryland State Fair in Timonium is more of a hike, but you can gamble on horses there. A big plus. Be sure you check out tomorrow's Weekend section for a good county fair low-down.

Thanks!
Anne Kenderdine: My budget-savvy friend Scott turned me on to this link -- a compendium of many non-Greyhound buses. He's a fan of the Vamoose line. Note that these buses have a more limited schedule, and many will require you to depart DC at either the mid-afternoon or the wee morning hours. An adventure, for sure.

Hey there! First time questioner here. Where's the best (and safest, for a lone chica) place in town to go listen to trance? Eighteenth Street Lounge, or someplace else?
Thanks so much in advance! Rhome Anderson: Safe as in the geographical area or safe as in not being subject to club pervs groping you? ESL will fit both definitions but doesn't play trance. They're a lounge/world-beat type of spot. Pearl doesn't disappoint and should serve you well, but I'm sure there are other options that are known more to a discriminating trance fan and less to a non-trance inclined Going Out Guru. Would anyone like to chime in? Oh! we recently got word that Friday nights at Air will be moving to a trance format. Definitely grumbles from the hip-hop contingent, we'll have to see how that goes.

A beer question...
Going to London tomorrow for a week. Any suggestions on the best pubs and beers to order when I'm there?
Thanks!
Fritz Hahn: First things first: drink nothing but cask ale. You'll find a lot of pubs are "tied" to breweries, which means you can only get certain beers. For example, I love the historic Victorian pub the Lamb (Lamb's Conduit St., near Russell Square and Holborn). It's owned by Young's, so it sells all the Young's beers -- no Samuel Smith's or Fuller's, for example, though Young's Beers are some of my favorites; Try their Special, or the Special London Ale if that's on. Names to look out for: aside from the breweries I just mentioned, easy-to-find brands include Shepherd's Neame (Spitfire), Greene King and Adnams.
Now, where are you staying? The White Horse in Parson's Green is legendary, with a huge, rotating selection of hard-to-find beers. Same with the J.D. Wetherspoon's pub chain, which always has independent brands on cask, and a number of locations around the city (the Shakespeare's Head near Holborn, the Station something-or-other at Baker Street and Hamilton Hall at Liverpool Street.
Other pubs I love: The Princess Louise near the British Museum and the Strand (Samuel Smith's), the Bank of England (a Fullers house in the old Bank of England building on Fleet Street), the Black Friars (Blackfriars) ... I could go on an on.
Oh wait, I just did.

Thanks! David Malitz: I missed last year's and kind of regretted it when I found out that one of the bands was the Treble Kickers, who did a mini-set of all Pavement tunes. Fritz and Rhome "have it on good authority" that there will be sets dedicated to Oasis, Sonic Youth, the B-52s and the Modern Lovers, among others.

Got a tough one for you as I'm completely at a loss. We have a rehearsal dinner for a wedding coming up that takes place downtown (Warner Theatre area). It's a small dinner, thats mostly immediate family. The brides family is huge and arriving throughout the day on Friday. She really wants to be able to spend some time with her family on Friday night since Saturday is going to be crazy.
Any suggestions on a place to go in the area around Hotel Washington where a group of about 30 and a lot of kids won't cause a major disturbance? I was thinking just walking down to the mall and letting the kids go wild, but I know that some of the adults will want a couple drinks. Our original idea was ESPNZone, but I'm unsure of the crowd on the weekend and if it would be appropriate for small kids. Any suggestions?
Jen Chaney: If you can get one of the tables at Old Ebbitt Grill that's in the atrium, that might be a good bet. Inside the main area of the restaurant, there's not much room for kids to roam. But in the atrium of the building, they're less likely to disturb other patrons and the adults will be able to have their drinks.

I was at Blue Gin last week and had the best time ever, thanks to your review Fritz, but tell me, do you think a place that "cool" will continue to uphold its reputation in a place like Georgetown? How will they continue to reinvent themselves? or will they?
Fritz Hahn: Well, they're reinventing the cocktail list as we speak. I think the 25-and-over age limit and dress codes will certainly help them stay cool for a while, at least. The music could change a bit, I think, but everything looks good for them.

Actually, I got a body wave (I know!) last fall at a place in Dupont. It was completely sans-poodle.
Unfortunately, my hair is thick and the extra body made my head look huge. Back to straight and choppy for me.
Anne Kenderdine: There's one experience. Can we hear from the thin-haired permees?

Can you tell me where I can play bar trivia in/near the city?
Fritz Hahn: My top three:
1. Fado on Mondays (8 rounds, general knowledge)
2. Quziio at the Pour House (old Politiki) on Tuesdays (2 games of three rounds, heavy on pop culture)
3. The Flying Scotsman on Mondays (copies the Quizzo format).
Can't say much for the Ri-Ra pub quiz. Also, I like JOTTeopardy at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern, but it's not a game that everyone can play -- you take a pre-qualifying test and the best three players compete in a Jeopardy-style matchup. Loads of fun to watch.

I got a nice perm at Salon Tommy in Springfield. I hadn't had one in years... (thin fine hair)...and it made life so much easier! Found out about this place by word-of-mouth. It is not a salon -- just a one man shop in a strip mall.
Anne Kenderdine: Wow. Anyone else have a story?

follow up question to blue gin... why did you not like the music, when i was there it was cool trance, a little 80s, dance hits. i thought it suited the atmosphere, the crowd, no?
Fritz Hahn: Last night, it was lots of generic deep house. Not the first time I've been there for a few hours and not really dug the music. Weekends (late) are a different story.

Are there any piano bars in the dc area where someone is actually playing the piano?
Fritz Hahn: 701 is a good one (and we love Mo the bartender). So is Kinkead's, but you need to wear a jacket/tie there.
Oh, and Ellington's on Eighth, if you're lucky, will have live blues and jazz music with a piano.

I need a place to go out drinking/hanging out on Saturday night with two 30-something couples. I'd like something a little on the relaxed side where we can actually sit down and have a drink and hear one another - but something that still has a bit of a cool loungey vibe. Anywhere DC or Maryland is good. You guys are the best!! Maura McCarthy: Have you tried Mayorga in your neck of the woods. I'm a big fan.
Jen Chaney: Cubano's is also in your neck of the woods, and they make pretty darn good mojitos. If you want to head into D.C., Aroma's always a good bet.

Bus-ing It:
I've taken Washington Deluxe a few times (last year) and found it surprisingly decent (www.washingtondeluxe.com). It was cheaper than driving, they showed videos to keep us entertained, and stopped once midway at a rest stop for food (although there is also a not-TOO-gross bathroom on the bus). The key, I have found, is to arrive EARLY to wait on line (I pick it up down 15th St) and jump on the first bus you can that looks decent. Every now and then a prison inmate bus shows up. But the other buses are fairly comfy, cool and the earliest buses to arrive get on their way the fastest. And make a reservation!!! You're not tied to it (you don't pay in advance) and you have to wait for everyone else to get on first (leaving you the seat next to the bathroom fo sho) if you don't. My $.02.
Anne Kenderdine: Thanks for the feedback. Yes, if you're reading this, you're a planner, so you'll definitely want to make reservations.

I notice for many of the places and events on your web site (Red Dog Saloon and 1223 two recent examples) there are a few 1- and 2- star reviews and then an anomaly, 4 star review that sounds suscpiciously tainted. A review only an owner or his PR staff could possibly cook up. It's not inapproprioate due to vulgarity but it really doesn't belong there. Should readers report these? Can there be a way to explain what caught our eye that you should evaluate for? Or do you want to leave readers to the principle of "Caveat Emptor"? I'd appreciate your insight. Thanks Maura McCarthy: Silver Spring, I'm having trouble searching so I can't read the review in question right now. But by all means, let us know if you think a review is inappropriate! There's a tab there to do just that. Please use it. We check out every review that anyone takes issue with.

I want to sit outside and have a healthyish dinner and a fantastic fruity drink, somewhere in the Dupont-Adams Morgan-Woodley-Cleveland Park realm. Where should I go?
Fritz Hahn: How about grabbing an outdoor table at Indique? They make some great fruity cocktails. There's also the Reef's roof (if you go early enough), because they can pretty much whip up anything you ask for, and some tropical drinks you didn't know you wanted.

We've done all the museums, the monuments, etc. It's my turn to plan and I'm out of ideas. Was thinking a walk down Embassy Row, but if the weather's bad, then I just don't know what to do. Any ideas for DC-ish activities that are "off the beaten path," so to speak?
Thanks!
Jen Chaney: Have you been to Great Falls? That's also reliant on decent weather, but might be an option for another sightseeing date if it rains this time around. How about taking a tour of the National Cathedral?

Speaking of ?uestlove at Saki, I was there a few weeks ago for the "DC Hip Hop Fest" and was very disappointed. They were supposed to feature breakdancers, old-school hip-hop... and instead, there was no DJ, just a recorded CD, and some of the waitresses danced to 80s music. Weird.
any word on what happened?
Rhome Anderson: I wasn't there and didn't hear much but I could take a guess. The Hip-Hop Theater Fest was a slate of performances, discussions and workshops by emerging artists that meld hip-hop techniques and themes with theater. The advertisements listed a slate of "night events" that were not about theater, just there to provide the shmoozing and merriment aspect that any convention-type event will have. None of them were launched specifically for the Festival, they were all existing events that were listed as a way for folks to get their party on. Some of them were a lot of fun but nothing that doesn't happen when the HHTF isn't in town. The Saki situation could have been anything from the HHTF not getting an accurate description of that party to the dj's not being able to show up for some reason. I do know that a lot of b-boys frequent Saki on nights that Tom B. and Dirty Handz are playing.

I know they are so 2001, but where are the best places to get mojitos in the city? My hubby is jones'n for a good one... Good food at the same locale is a plus.
Thx!
Fritz Hahn: Cafe Atlantico makes a great one. We prefer them at Habana Village, though, because of its funky old atmosphere, and the enormous sugar cane stalk that comes as a stirrer.
Others: Cafe Salsa in Old Town is pretty tasty. Cafe Citron is good at happy hour (they're under $5), but crowded on weekends and not such a deal when you're paying 8 or 9 bucks. Yucca (Cuban restaurant at 18th and M) is okay.
I've had some interesting takes on the mojito at Blue Gin, so you could always ask. Most memorable involved fresh pineapple muddled with the mint.

Re: Bus-ing It:
At the last minute, here's my input. I've taken pretty much all the Chinatown buses to NY. They're pretty much all the same in terms of quality, except Century Travel usually has someone who speaks good English (important, especially in cases like mine where my bag was accidentally removed from the bus and left in NY...I was able to pick it up a few days later from a Chinese buffet restaurant). A few of them have service to Midtown in case you don't live near Chinatown or Brooklyn. Arrive early and get to the front of the line: even though they all now accept online reservations, there seems to be no calculations made for any of these bus lines to avoid overselling. I've seen people turned away who have had a reservation. Lastly (but most importantly), sit towards the front. Period.
Anne Kenderdine: Straight-up advice. Thanks.

Hi Gogs,
I'm submitting TWO days early! As others have posted, this is part GOG, part Hax: I think I'm going to hang out with a guy who is a friend but has sort of been more in the recent past. We're trying to "just be friends" for now until he figures out what's going on his head. So, we're likely getting together on Sunday. What's a good thing to do for two friends who are very close but can't be "close" yet? As simple as a museum and coffee/lunch? Anything unique going on? I'm not in town most weekends, so I'm kind of out of the loop. Hope you can help! Thanks so much! Joe Heim: Well, it's an age old question you pose McPherson Square. The friends who move to "sort of been more" than friends followed by the famous "just friends for now" while he "figures out what's going on." Unfortunately, there are no easy answers as to proper dating guidelines during this difficult stage. (Maura says "Dump him!"). Failing that, you might want to leave it up to him to decide where to go. Otherwise it'll seem like you are pushing the issue. (But, honestly, I think I agree with Maura.)

Jen Chaney: Hi, Springfield. I've never been to X-Hale. From what I know of the place, I'd suggest heading to D.C. instead, if only because there are more options if you want to ditch out on the place you've chosen. If you're all heading down from Frederick, you should arrange for some sort of transportation (limo? rent a van?) or get one of the crew to agree to be designated driver.

They aren't fancy, but the fries at Dr. Dremo's are terrific, with a little dusting of Old Bay.

Trying to be a good girl and plan ahead... I've got a dozen people coming into town and I need a happy little place, preferably in Adams Morgan, where we can chat and mingle and drink for a reasonable price. Really hoping we can find somewhere not too loud. So what do you think of Mantis... Bossa... Crush... Blue Room... elsewhere around there?
Fritz Hahn: Depends on the night, really. For a dozen people ... Crush is a no-go. Mantis is busy, but you could snag the patio on an off-night; I went to a birthday party that did just that, and we pulled some tables together. I'll say the Blue Room could be good, and you might also consider the Reef.

What time will Big Boi take the stage at Sessions at Merriweather? Joe Heim: Hard to know Frederick. The show starts at 6 and he's headlining so it probably won't be until 9 or so. But don't hold me to that. I'm still smarting from last Friday when I was told that Jill Scott was going on at 10:30 at the 9:30. I showed up at 10:25 and she was wrapping up her set.

Hey Gurus,
I just moved to a new job at McPherson Square, and I'm still figuring out where the after work watering holes are around there. Most days I just want a laid back place to hang out, but I like a classy cocktail at a swank place every now and then. Where should I head? Maura McCarthy: Le Bar would work. D.C. Coast isn't too far either, but gets a bit too crowded in my mind.

Hi Gurus, Just wondering whether any of you have heard of this new bar in Adams Morgan called Zucchabar. Is it any good? My friend had suggested stopping there for a mutual friends bachelorette party. What's the vibe at that place? Don't want anything too relaxed or loungy for a wild girls night out! Any thoughts? Thanks, you guys are the best!
Fritz Hahn: I've got a review up on our site. It can be lively or dead, depending on the night. Sometimes it's fun, but it's probably not bachelorette material.

Please please please help with a rather strange but important question!!
I have a friend who is a recently recovered alcoholic who is coming in this weekend. I want him to have an absolute blast and realize how fun life can be without alcohol. I have a few ideas, but not enough of them, and they get worse as the hours get late. The activity type doesn't matter too much, as long as it is incredibly fun.
Thanks thanks thanks!!
Anne Kenderdine: So you need to get the adrenaline pumping? How about a visit to Six Flags? Or anything you haven't tried in a while -- rent rollerblades, play paintball. County fairs (like Loudoun's this weekend) put the bizarre on display -- from people kissing pigs to a drag beauty pageant. Get people to take pictures of you throughout the weekend. In the evenings, see concerts outside of clubs, like Sunday's Crosstown Jam at Carter Barron, or the jazz concerts at the Sculpture Garden.

When does the karaoke get started at Cafe Japone on Fridays? What's the crowd like? (I'm not taking the punks there, I swear.)
Anne Kenderdine: So easy, TP. The Electrik Maid (on your way to the Takoma Metro) is packed on weekend nights with mohawks, studded jackets and piercings -- more so than the Black Cat. It would be a breeze to stop off there on your way downtown. Last night's show was pumping as early as 8:30. And Japone's karoke gets going around 11. There were lots of college-age folks last time I visited.

The Going Out Gurus:
Rhome Anderson: There's something I forgot to mention too. Two weeks ago we were talking about the 9:30 Club and General Admission seating when someone asked how they could get a good seat at the Jill Scott show. I just KNEW that there would be seating beef at this show because of a lot of folks at a sold out show that aren't used to going there. The only hope I had was that I saw signs last time I was there that explained the seating policy (there is none... get in where you fit in!!). So of course my crew was at the Jill show, we posted up on the balcony railing. The folks behind us started beefing. I tried to tell them what was up (there were no more signs). They complained to some 9:30 Club employees who then tried to make us move, even though the dude couldn't explain the official policy, which we were happy to acquiesce to if there was one. So the place eventually filled up of course, which meant that if we had moved, they would have been locked in a dispute with the new people who came in later. Then they glowered and intimidated anyone who came near their space. This has got to stop people. *end rant*
