Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Since some of you have been asking, we're going old school today to let you know about our plans so far. David "I-avoid-fireworks" is into Fort Reno, Maura has tix to The Producers and is also visiting Annapolis, seaworthy Janet is sailing to Cambridge, Md., Lynette is hiking the Billy Goat Trail, Fritz "I can't-decide" will be at Dream or the Reef's Sunday parties, Jen is swinging for Spidey, and yes, Before Sunrise, Joe is excited about Dizzee Rascal and the Streets, Rhome is under the weather today, Alexa is going to Wegmans and maybe Udvar-Hazy. I'm Anne, and I can not wait for the Lawnmowers Against Global Warming in the 115th Takoma Park Independence Day Parade (on Monday, July 5). Come Fourth!

Oh Great GOG's of knowledge and wisdom....
I 'm looking to celebrate the fourth with a little fishing, crabbing and maybe a beach for my 3- and 5-year-olds where they could hang out in the sand...any ideas? Something close preferably in Southern Maryland. I've heard of West Moreland?! Any ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Fort Washington, sounds like a great plan for the Fourth. My first recommendation would be Sandy Point State Park which offers all of the above. I'm not familiar with a West Moreland in Maryland, but there is Westmoreland State Park in Virginia which has a small beach and lots of fossils. If these don't work for you, here's our Beach Guide for a comprehensive look at what's available in the area. Have fun. Lynette

Hi gurus:
I want to take a day trip with friends to go whitewater rafting. Any ideas where we can go?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington, Harpers Ferry is about an hour and a half drive, depending on traffic, and you can raft the Shenandoah with the help of outfitters like River Riders. They also offer rafting on the North Potomac and elsewhere. Another option a slightly longer drive away is the Downriver Canoe Company in Bentonville, Va, which has trips on the southern Shenandoah. Hey GOG! Love your chats...submitting early duer to a work meeting. I went to the Mall last year to see firworks..where else if there to go in MD/DC/VA? Any special events/festivals going on for Sunday?
The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, not far from you, I've found the National Cathedral to be a great spot for catching the fireworks. Check out this July 4th guide for more fireworks-watching spots (see the box on the right side of the page).
For festivals, why not try the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Sunday's lineup includes Haitian cooking, bluegrass music and salsa lessons. Sounds good to me. -- Maura

Great Gurus, I want my hair to look great when I go out to all the bars and clubs you recommend. But when I try to fix my hair, it's never the same as when my hair stylist fixes it after a cut. Do you know of any classes I can take to learn their techniques?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm. Unless you're a professional, your hair is never going to look the same as when your stylist does it. However, you might ask your stylist if he or she can show you some things you can do to improve the way you do it.

Washington, D.C. - '80s music:
Have a date on Friday night who loves '80s music. Any suggestion on places to go in D.C. or possibly Arlington?
BTW... love the GOGs. Read it every week but this is my first question!
The Going Out Gurus: Fridays are tough in terms of finding a strictly '80s night. Now if you could wait until Sunday, "Lovesexy" at Modern is doing a tribute to the 20th anniversary of "Purple Rain," which should be pretty cool. Readers: Got '80s suggestions for a Friday night? -- Jen

Any word on Damien-spotting? My locks are growing long and scraggly as I hold out in the hopes of finding my Bang-hero. Any sightings/info would be appreciated!! Or (sigh) recommendations for another stylist from other Damien-addicts?
The Going Out Gurus: The word is that Damien has found a spot for a new salon in the Adams-Morgan area, but there's no info on when it will open.

I'm making my first trip to Clarendon Ballroom tonight. What can I expect? Is there a cover on Thursday night? Will my footwear be inspected? Is a collared shirt required? Don't want to go all the way to Arlington just to get shut down at the door. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Cover: It's $8 after 8 p.m. Arrive early for happy hour (6ish? 7ish?) and make the best of the cheap drinks on the rooftop. Expect a young, wish-we-were-in-Dewey crowd that's out to have a good time and maybe hook up. There's a dress code -- can't remember what it says about footwear, but I've worn (dressy) sneakers there before. Don't wear your workout clothes (or hats, or tank-tops) and you'll be fine. -- Fritz

Hi! Love your chat. need recommendations for brunch on Monday (it IS a holiday). We have a few friends visiting from out of town and would like to take them to somewhere fun and nice in D.C./Alexandria/Arlington area (not too far from National Airport). thatnks for your help!
The Going Out Gurus: Fairfax, yes you're right it IS a holiday, but my guess is you'd be best looking at a hotel breakfast. I might treat myself to the glamorous Asian breakfast at Cafe Mozu in the Mandarin Oriental. Another very nice one can be had at Teaism (not a hotel) or the Tabard. -- Alexa

The Going Out Gurus: The rehearsal for the Capitol Fourth concert starts at 7 p.m, July 3. A smart way to see the show with fewer crowds. Same security procedures, though.

Where to run, where to dance?:
Two questions that I think fall well within your expertise.
First, we were looking for an organization or some such thing that runs a mid-week track workout. We're doing some training for a little distance run (10 miles hopefully) near the end of the summer and can handle the long runs on our own on the weekends, but were hoping to find a track workout mid-week.
But, one must also make time for the romance. Where can we learn to tango?
The Going Out Gurus: Clearly, Where to Run, you have your priorities in order. As for mid-week track work-outs, several running clubs hold work-outs at Washington-Lee High School . The DC Road Runners run there at 7 p.m. every Wednesday and the Washington Running Club holds co-ed workouts at 6:10 p.m. Tuesdays. The Gay-friendly DC Front Runners have a variety of run-togethers, usually at 23rd and P Streets NW, including 7 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. Sundays. Now, as for the tango, run right on over to Glen Echo Park's Spanish Ballroom to go Dancing in the Park. They have tango lessons at 3 p.m. every Saturday. Lynette

Hi gurus,
I have always had an inane desire to see pigs race. Where are the best places to see pig racing this summer?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Oh please. No need to call that desire inane. County and state fairs will certainly be the best places to find racing swine, and you'll want to check back here in a few weeks as we pull together all of our summer fair info. But here are a couple of options to get you started. In addition to pig races, The Maryland State Fair will also feature Swifty the Swimming Pig. That could be something to behold. A little more in your neck of the woods is the Arlington County Fair, which will be Aug. 19-22. Don't think there will be any swimming pigs, but there will be goat races in addition to pig races. And you'll be able to get your autumn fix of pig racing at the Virginia State Fair, which is Sept. 23-Oct. 3. --David

We are three late 20-somethings looking to go out dancing, etc. Friday night. Looking for a scene that's not Platinum, not Crush--just somewhere fun, laid back and hip where we can get our groove on to some killer beats without feeling like the oldest people in the place. Would Mantis fit the bill?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes! Love that Mantis. The grooves are tight, the crowd lacks too much attitude, and the cocktails upstairs are great. If that gets too crowded, head down the block and check out a special edition of Knee Deep (deep, funky house) at the Blue Room. It's got a dress code, but nothing like Platinum. -- Fritz

Okay, how crazy crowded is Udvar-Hazy likely to be on a weekend? Has anyone been lately?
The Going Out Gurus: I just accused Alexa of submitting this question as she wondered the same thing. I'll give you the same advice (hoping she doesn't mind): Arrive early. The worst part of a crowded weekend at Udvar-Hazy is the parking. And do keep in mind that it opens at 10 a.m., even on Sunday. -- Maura

I was walking around the Mall Monday night and as I cut through the Ellipse area towards 17th Street, I saw what seemed like dozens of softball games going on. It even seemed well-organized, most teams boasting jerseys and such. Is this a league? Is there a way for an individual to get involved/join up? Should I 'ho-myself out as an ex-athlete who still has a little pop in her glove?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Kansas, I'm not sure which softball league plays on the Ellipse (chatters who know, please chime in). The Congressional Softball League plays in the area (you don't have to work on the Hill to participate) and you can always sign up to play on their free agent board. Lynette

Any one have any preferences for where to get carry out steamed crabs, esp. in NOVA?
How is it to go down to the harbor near H2O and grab some? Am I dreaming to think I could get any on the July 4th weekend? Do I need to consult a loan officer before purchasing a bushel?
The Going Out Gurus: Here's a newsflash, Crabby. Arlington Courthouse farmers market on Saturdays (8-12) is selling them, though we aren't sure if they're ready-steamed. Otherwise, I've certainly had them from the Maine Avenue Wharf, though it's been some years now. The good man I just spoke to down there says that right this very minute a bushel of big males will cost you $100-$120. But move fast because one hour from now, that price is going higher. Good Afternoon Gurus,
I am looking for a roofdeck bar that I can see fireworks from. Preferably in Arlington or Alexandria, but D.C. would be ok too. I understand Clarendon Ballroom is having a July 3rd party, but are they open on the 4th?
Thanks,
Have a happy Holiday!
The Going Out Gurus: You won't believe this, Arlington, but you can see most of the fireworks from the covered patio at Dr. Dremo's Tap House. They've got 30-odd draft beers available, as well as outdoor pool and ping-pong tables.
Nothing doing at the Ballroom, I'm afraid. The Reef has a $60 package with an open bar in Adams Morgan, and Hotel Washington -- maybe the best view in the city -- is taking reservations now. That's the only way you can get a seat at the Sky Terrace; don't even try to walk up. -- Fritz

The Going Out Gurus: Hi NoVA, it is that time of year. Probably every outdoor/tourist venue in the country will have its throngs this weekend. You might a little more breathing room at the lesser known George Washington National Forest though. Lynette

21st and M, Washington, D.C.:
Hi Gurus, I know bachelorette party ideas are requested a lot, but I really need some help. My friend and I are planning a dinner and bachelorette party for one of our friends who is getting married soon. We want to go to places (restaurants and bars) that are lively and upbeat. There are three issues, however. First, we are not in the position to pay a ton of money for dinner and drinks - so we don't want to go to restaurants that are pricey or bars with a huge cover and spendy drinks. Second, this friend of ours doesn't drink all that much and is completely averse to cheesiness (in other words, NO Polly Esther's or Dream). Third, her bridal shower is the next morning. My guess is that we're all probably going to have to roll out of bed to head over to the party. So, if we could avoid super smokey, sweaty places that would be great. I realize there are a lot of stipulations here, but maybe can you help us find a restaurant and a few fun bars to go to? I'd definitely appreciate anything!!! Thanks so much!!!
The Going Out Gurus: Let me see if I have this right: You want to go bar-hopping bachelorette-style without spending a lot, drinking a lot, being around smokers or getting sweaty. You're right, this is a tall order.
I assume you want to stay in D.C., so I suggest you pick a central location for the night's event, maybe in Adams Morgan or Dupont. And start early, which will help you in terms of getting a table and getting home at a reasonable hour. If there are eight or fewer of you in the party, you could try to eat at Cashion's, then hit the various bars along 18th and Columbia, like The Reef or Peyote Cafe, if you're up for karaoke. In all honesty, given the stipulations, you might be better off planning some type of a fun party for the bride at someone's house. It would certainly make it easier to stick within a budget, and if the bride doesn't care for the cheesy drinking scene anyway, she may be just as happy to have, say, a "Sex and the City" party with all of her friends. Just food for thought. There's no law that says every bride needs a certain kind of bachelorette party, or any bachelorette at all, so don't feel like you're giving her short shrift if you plan something different. Especially if the bride isn't that into the whole concept, which it sounds like she might not be. -- Jen

I can't find a review on De-Lovely on your site which comes out tomorrow and only seems to be playing at Landmark in Bethesda. Any word on this film about Cole Porter's life? Supposed to have tons of great musical performances mixed in. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Reviews of "De-Lovely" will be posted this evening and tomorrow morning, so that's why you can't find them yet. You can, however, watch the trailer. I (Jen) haven't caught this one yet, but I'm hearing mixed things. You're right, though, there are performances by modern artists doing Cole Porter tunes, including Alannis Morissette, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall and Robbie Williams. If you're a Porter fan, you may want to check it out regardless of the reviews.

On the Mall and ready for a drink:
Meeting up with friends tonight for the Twilight Tour of the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden and (desprately!) need to find a place nearby that can give us some liquid refreshment (of the alcoholic kind, please) between 6 and 7pm. Checked with the Nat'l Gallery and their cafe closes at 6; the Hirshhorn isn't serving food and drink at Art Night this year. Sounds like a task for the gurus...
The Going Out Gurus: If you've got money to burn (literally), there's the Empress Lounge at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Very swish, gorgeous chairs and fabrics, terrific bar snacks (olives, Asian trail mix), great cocktails -- but an apple martini costs $15. It's on Maryland Ave. if you walk past L'Enfant Plaza.
Other than that, I'm really at a loss for bars on the Independence Ave. side of the Mall. Chatters? -- Fritz

The Going Out Gurus: It's not in D.C., but Chuck Levin's in Wheaton has a pretty huge selection of keyboards and other instruments. There's always local chains like Jordan Kitt's or Oren Music. But I'd suggest taking a trip out to College Park to visit Atomic Music. I'm one of those people that gets terrified when I walk into music stores, but the staff at Atomic is extremely friendly and helpful, and the prices are honest. I know that AM has much more to offer, can you help us out of our rut?? Thanks!!
The Going Out Gurus: Mantis for dancing and grooving to house music in the basement; Adams Mill or the Angry Inch for a similar Brass Monkey vibe, although I like Adams Mill's patio better and the Inch has dancing upstairs; drinks upstairs in Soussi's tented Moroccan lounge; salsa dancing at Habana Village (arrive early for beginner lessons, or just watch while you sip mojitos); live blues and a raucous crowd at Madams Organ ... -- How's that?

PS- I looked at the Weekend section's beach guide, but was wondering if you all had any personal suggestions that were left out, as the section had to focus on multiple beaches.
The Going Out Gurus: Though it is admittedly a cheese-fest, you should probably walk along the O.C. boardwalk just to have that experience. In terms of places to eat and drink, there are lots of places on the bay side with very nice sunset views (BJ's, Mackey's and Fager's Island come to mind). My husband and I had drinks once at Galaxy/Sky Lounge (I think this was mentioned in the beach guide) and we enjoyed that -- very different experience from most beach fare. If you're into mini-golf at all, definitely visit the Old Pro courses on Coastal Highway -- castle and pirate were my favorites as a kid. And if you're there for four days, you may want to visit Bethany or even Rehoboth. There's a wonderful, restaurant in Bethany called Sedona that serves more expensive dishes, but they have an early-bird special, if I remember correctly. Hope this helps. -- Jen

Hi, some friends and I were hoping to take a volleyball net onto the mall Sunday afternoon, but I was wondering if this would be possible given crowds and post-9/11 security measures? Is there anywhere one could combine a cooler of "refreshments" and volleyball (legally, that is) ? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda, let's throw this one out to the peanut gallery for comments. My personal opinion is while normally you could find a spot fairly easily, this Sunday things are going to be too crowded. Thoughts, anyone? Lynette

We had a disaster dining experience at Annie's (17th Street) when we tried the seafood options (what were we thinking?!). When we recover, where can you recommend for yummy seafood (non-fried options, please) but an atmosphere not too stuffy or pricey (McCormick's comes to mind)? Dupont, AM, Downtown, etc. would be preferred. Thanks, GOGs!!
The Going Out Gurus: Dinner entrees at Johnny's Half Shell are averagely priced in the $15-20 range. And I'd say Pesce's are about the same. -- Alexa

I just heard that Montg. County isn't having a fireworks display this year. Is that true?
The Going Out Gurus: Actually, there are five Fourth of July celebrations in Montgomery County. Take your pick.

Gurus,
Why is it that I read your chat even when I'm going out of town on the weekend? Well, tonight I'm meeting up with a friend or two for a quick drink after work, as we usually do once or twice a week.
I still like my usual haunts -- St-Ex, Fado, L'enfant, Local 16, Reef, but wouldn't mind a breath of fresh air. Got any ideas for a new place anywhere between downtown and Cleveland Park? The only musts are room at the bar to sit and no intern scene. Happy hour specials would be good too, but not mandatory (as long as the only choices aren't $10 martinis!)
The Going Out Gurus: Aroma in Cleveland Park, if you get there early -- happy hour before 7 or 8 (I forget) means beers and mixed drinks under $4. No interns need apply. You could try the bar at Panache, which makes its own flavored vodka and Sangria. If you're dressed well, Eyebar has specials on martinis, rail drinks and beers until 8, and while it's not quite a see-and-be-seen spot that early in the night, it's worth checking out. -- Fritz

Petworth:
De-lovey will also be playing at the Avalon. I think it starts there next weekend. Check http://www.theavalon.org/ to be certain
The Going Out Gurus: Good call, Petworth. According to my info, "De-Lovely" opens there July 16. This weekend, they've still got "Fahrenheit 9/11" and the delightfully weird "Napoleon Dynamite." Did anyone else see Jon Heder (aka Napoleon) on "Letterman" last night? He's so much more normal without the 'fro. -- Jen

Hey Anne ... just wanted to say that I hope you're going to stick around after Lawnmowers on Parade for the evening's entertainment and pre-fireworks concert in Takoma Park ... my daughter's band (Lemonface) will be playing ... we've even figured out a way to get them to look semi-patriotic (for example, the drummer's Weezer T-shirt is red, etc.).
The Going Out Gurus: But of course.

Trying to find some bars to go to before the Fort Reno concerts...any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Guapo's (on Wisconsin, half-a-block from the Metro) always works for me. Cheap mexican beer and margaritas before 7, which leaves plenty of time to make the first band. -- Fritz

I have a desire to see crickets playing softball. Any ideas on where I can see this?
Also, any idea where the Korean lady from Hair Cuttery is now cutting hair? She used to do a great $11 hair cut; but now that the price is all the way up to $14 she is nowhere to be found.
The Going Out Gurus: No, sorry, and no.

I plan to spend the 4th on my roof deck away from the unwashed masses, but I can't decide which vintage of Dom to open for the occasion. What do the Gurus suggest?
The Going Out Gurus: No, no, no. Head to the Mandarin Oriental. They have bottles of Pol Roger Cuvee Winston Churchill on the menu (and Cristal, if you must). -- Fritz

Hirshhorn help:
Can't believe the Museum is not serving drinks at their cafe? If it were me, I'd meet my friends for a drink somewhere near 7th & Penn -- Andale? 701?--then walk across the Mall to the Hirshhorn.
The Going Out Gurus: 701 would be nice. Say "hi" to Mo for us. He's an outstanding bartender.

Alexandria/Fairfax, Va.:
Is D.C. the only place holding fireworks displays? I scoured the Post online and could not find info on any other locations. With three small children, the D.C. display is just not workable, even from the Virginia shores of the Potomac. Please advise if there is a guide to alternative displays.
Thank you!
The Going Out Gurus: I'm sorry to hear that. There are dozens of local fireworks displays and Independence Day celebrations, including two in Alexandria, eight in Fairfax. -- Anne

Hi GoGs!
I will be at Camden Yards for an afternoon game on Monday and was wondering if there was anything fun going on that day in Baltimore, such as outdoor events (festivals, concerts, etc) or interesting art exhibits, anything of the sort. Thanks!!
The Going Out Gurus: Unfortunately, FN, most museums in Baltimore are closed on Mondays. The National Aquarium will be open, but -- let's face it -- a zoo with all the crowds. You could try the Fells Point Maritime Museum and a stroll around the neighborhood or even get up close to the jumbotron in a tour of Camden Yards. -- Maura

Near OceanCity:
There is a restaurant called Shark's Cove. It has a great bay view and some of the best seafood in the area.
The Going Out Gurus: Looks like this place is in Fenwick, so not far at all from O.C. Thanks for the suggestion.

New on the scene:
hey gurus, wasn't sure if this existed, but would you consider having a link somewhere on the bars/clubs page to places that are opening soon? I feel like I read/hear about new resturants, bars, clubs that are going to be hitting the scene, but can't find the info of when,
where, and what to expect. For example, there are rumors of a few
new spots on the 8th street corridor (SE), but I have no idea where to find out any further info. You could always updated the site as you find out more, and keep all your loyal fans in the loop. Kinda like the bar equivilant to the "coming soon" of movies, no? But perhaps this type of listing does exist and I haven't come across it yet.
Just my two cents.
Thanks!
Happy 4th!
The Going Out Gurus: I've thought about that, and it's a possibility. Problem is, I like to go to places before I write about them or recommend them to anyone. I'll see what I can do. -- Fritz

I'm looking for a good place to watch the fireworks on July 4th. I had heard that there is a park by Reagan National airport that is a good spot to watch, any idea where exactly that is?
The Going Out Gurus: You're thinking of Gravelly Point Park, which is a wonderful place to see the fireworks on the Mall, and airplanes, too, by the way.

Bachelorette Party:
If she's allergic to cheese, will she eat scones with jam and clotted cream? I went to a perfectly lovely "bachelorette party" recently that consisted of high tea at a hotel; I think it was the Jefferson - something downtown anyway. OK, so there were no thongs, condoms, or strippers, but no hangovers either (though you can of course get drinks) and it was a great female-bonding experience.
The Going Out Gurus: An excellent suggestion. There are plenty of things to do in lieu of the "traditional" bachelorette party and this is a good example. Thanks.

Do a webiste search for Keepstone Farms for directions. something to do with your dog?
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip. I didn't find any directions on the Web, but you can call the farm at 540-327-6744. Lynette

I am a life long local and staying in town for the holiday weekend. I want to be a tourist in my hometown. What are the names of those all day tour buses that you can ride around on and hop off and on?
The Going Out Gurus: I think you're talking Tourmobile. If you're up for a little more action, think about Bike the Sites or Washington Walks. We've got a full list of guided tours right here. Have fun and report back what you think . -- Maura

In search of mojitos, Washington, D.C.:
Can you re-post the link to Fritz's recommendations on mojitos (and, if possible, the link to a similarly themed Washington Post print article by a different writer)? I remember Habana Village and Cafe Atlantico being recommended, but am sketchy on the others. I had an awful mojito at Raku last weekend and am anxious to avoid any similar experiences...
The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm. Odd that they're not showing up. I'd add Cafe Salsa (Alexandria) and Cafe Citron to that list. And Rumba Cafe, though not on a weekend. -- Fritz

Falls Church, Va.:
Been here four years, but this is the first 4th fireworks I'll get to see. Three of us now debating where to see the Mall fireworks, and when to get down there to get a spot. We will take Metro. Options: Lincoln Memorial area, Washington Monument area, Mt. Vernon trail somewhere on Virginia side or Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Memorial. Thoughts on best location and best time to get there? Don't want to be TOO early but then again want to get a spot. Help?
The Going Out Gurus: Good for you, Falls Church, this is a must. These are all great sites. Some others, for those of you interested in alternative fireworks-watching spots are: Hains Point, Lady Bird Johnson Park, the Jefferson Memorial, Anacostia Park, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 1600 Morris Road SE, and of course, the West Lawn of the Capitol, where the Capitol Fourth concert will be going on. If you have a friend of can get you to the roof of a tall apartment building, especially one in Columbia Heights or near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station, that would be sweet. In terms of arrival, it depends what you can handle. If you arrive in the early afternoon, you should have a clear spot big enough for your blanket. Do leave at least two hours to get to your spot before the show on the Mall, at 9:10 p.m. With road closures and parking restrictions, you'll need it.
