Got Plans?
The Going Out Gurus
of the washingtonpost.com Entertainment Guide
Thursday, January 06, 2005; 1:00 p.m. ET
Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.
Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.
Editor's Note: washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control

The Going Out Gurus:
Afternoon all. There are some Tsunami efforts afoot in the city. Check here for details. And this, just in: the Thai owners of Bangkok Joe's and THAI Shirlington will donate $5 to the Thai Embassy relief fund every time a three-course Restaurant Week menu is ordered (lunch or dinner). We're all here today and I (Alexa) am driving.

Hello! My birthday is over the weekend, and I was thinking of doing something a bit different during the day with a few friends, rather than doing the traditional party-at-night. Given the strange and unpredictable weather, have any thoughts? Thanks! Maura: Well, if Sunday continues to look so promising -- sunny and in the 50's -- could you talk your friends into a hike. I was in the Catoctin Mountains last weekend with several friends and it was quite a treat for January. If you'd reather stay closer to home, there's always brunch -- a perfect celebratory meal. Settle in at the Tabard Inn or even Zatytinya. If Cafe Atlantico still has their big table for Saturday dim sum brunch, book it fast.

Could you plese tell me what your experience has been at the Elventh Street in Clarendon? I noticed it is an editor's pick after only being open for a couple months which is quite a compliment.
Fritz: You can read about my experiences here. I like the place -- it's a cool little spot with good food and drinks, and a much hipper, loungier atmosphere than the rest of Clarendon.

I have some friends who are christening their new gallery during tomorrow's "First Friday" on Gallery Row.
This is the first "First Friday" of the new year, and might be a cool thing to check out tomorrow night.
So come and check out their gallery JET Artworks between 6-8pm on 2108 R Street NW in Dupont.
Maura: Thanks for the tip, U Street. For First Friday regulars, JET Artworks has moved into the space formerly occupied by the Elizabeth Roberts Gallery.

I want to go dancing with a date tonight someplace that is more of a bar with a dancefloor rather than a dance club. I'll dance to most anything, but am thinking non-80's or trance. I live in Adams Morgan and would like to be able to walk to the location so it can therefore be in Adams Morgan, U. St, Woodley Park, Dupont, Columbia Heights, etc. Any advice would be appreciated.
Fritz: Try the Blue Room for Uncle Q's Living Room -- old-school hip-hop, classic funk, breakdancers -- and it's got an attractive bar and plenty of seating. Get there early to grab a seat in the mezzanine level; arrive by 10 and you'll be fine.

Any suggestions for lounges with good finger foods? Is Tapatini's worth trying out?
Thanks! You guys are great. Rhome: Rather than give you four miniscule falafel balls on your tapas plate, the Tapatini's portions are pretty good. Fritz is lukewarm about the quality of their grub though.
Fritz: Well ... it's not a bad place to try out, but it hasn't blown me away. I'd rather hit one of the lounges at Tallula, where they have foie gras finger sandwiches, mini-Chorizo corn dogs and 70 wines by the glass, plus some interesting (others say "fun") martinis.

Hey gurus, Happy New Year!
Just wanted to pass on a recommendation for the movie "Hotel Rwanda". Saw it last night at a packed screening, and I wanted to encourage as many people as possible to see it. The filmmakers are donating proceeds from the film to the Rwandan Survivors Fund, so you can even do some good with your $10 admission.
It's not easy subject matter to get people to see, but the critics are right- you will be so glad you did.
Jen: Thanks for this message, D.C. I second that recommendation. I saw "Hotel Rwanda" on Tuesday night and thought it was a very compelling film, although the subject matter is difficult. But that's exactly the reason to see it.
While we're passing on recommendations, "Million Dollar Baby," which also comes out Friday, is outstanding, too.

Hey GOGs! I'm amazed by the calendar you put out detailing the Arts/Entertainment events for the next 12 months - usually put out around this time. Is it out yet or do you know when? Thanks!
Anne: The Weekend section will run that calendar on Friday, Jan. 21, so stay tuned. In the meantime, you can always find upcoming events through the Entertainment Guide. Here's a list of everything we've got, sorted by our favorites. And if you're looking for a particular event, just type it in the keyword search box.

I know it's very late to be asking, but what's the deal with the Commander-in-Chief's inaugural ball? My bf is active duty, just got back from Iraq, and he wants to go. The USO hasn’t returned his calls. Do the mighty gurus know anything?
David: Inaugural Committee planners and the Pentagon worked together to choose the 2,000 members of the armed forces who will be invited to the Commander-in-Chief Ball. If you haven't heard anything by now, it might be too late to do anything about it, but here is the contact info for the Inaugural Committee, you could try getting in touch with them. They are probably more likely to get back to you than the Pentagon.

Jen: Sure thing. Here's the info on the Iranian Film Festival at the Freer.

I hear the Rolling Stones are planning an album and world tour. Will that bring them to the D.C. area, and if so when? So you know when tickets go on sale?
Also I hear that at least two of the surviving members of Queen plan a reunion tour of sorts. It won't be the same without Freddie Mercury, but do you know when that show is scheduled for in this area?
Joe: Hello D.C. A Queen reunion tour is in the planning stages I think. Bad Company's Paul Rodgers will handle the lead singing duties and the tour is expected to launch in the UK in April. Of course, it could all fall apart before then. As for the Stones, I haven't heard anything definitive about any tour dates this year.

Hey guys! My boyfriend and I, are going to Ceiba for dinner tomorrow night at 8:00 and I was looking for suggestions for something different in that area to do after we eat. Different from the usual bar scene on a Friday night. I'm up for anything- theater, comedy, dancing, etc. Something romantic and fun would be nice. Any help is greatly appreciated! Maura: You would have to cross town to Foggy Bottom to find dancing at Melrose (where the crowd skews a bit older) and theater performancew would be well-underway by the time you finish up dinner. You might want to stop for an after-dinner drink at a number of nearby posher restaurants/bars -- Oceannaire, the new IndeBleu or Le Bar.

I'm a bad girlfriend! I was supposed to get tickets for my boyfriend's birthday for a concert at the Black Cat tomorrow night, but its sold out. Any idea where I might be able to get tickets, and if I would have any luck showing up the night of the concert, I've never been to the Black Cat so I'm not sure what type of venue it is. Thanks.
Joe: I doubt the Black Cat releases tickets on the day of a show, but it's worth calling the club and asking. You can always try to go to the club the night of the show and see if any one is selling off their extra tickets, but in my experience this doesn't usually produce results. Especially when the show is sold out. Good luck anyway. I'm sure your boyfriend will get over it if you don't get the tickets.

Happy Thursday All!
I noticed a lot of fundraising events for tsunami victims at different restaruants but many are this weekend when I won't be home. Anything coming up?
Alexa: Breadline is hosting city chefs and their foods on Feb. 3 from 5-8 p.m. I'm not quite sure of all the details yet, but I do know that folk like Kaz, Michelle Richard and Roberto Donna will be among those there.

Hi GOG's. Happy New Year. Getting my hair cut in the U Street area on Saturday. What is a good place to grab some lunch (I'll be by myself). Also, any good shops I should hit while I'm there. Janet: There are lots of good shops around U. Are you looking for clothing, furniture??? Wild Women Wear Red is fun for shoes; Nana sells vintage and new.

Janet: Have you tried a mall? Another possibility: Claire's.

Suggestions: Celadon, Aveda in Georgetown, Serenity Day Spa and Skin Beauty Lounge. Lots more, but that's a start.

You mentioned Tallulah-- what are your thoughts? going there this weekend with a big crew -- the same crew who used to patronize Whitey's, will they be mad if we pour one out in memory of Whitey's?
Fritz: Not as long as it's a $22 glass of Chateauneuf de Pape, I don't think. The place is nothing like Whitey's, so don't go expecting broasted chicken, darts and PBR. It's much sleeker looking (though the decor looks somewhat half-finished in places), with low-slung couches, chaise lounges and plenty of candles tucked into tiled nooks. They have 70 wines by the glass, and it's a lot of fun if you like wine, martinis and finger food. If you're looking to get rowdy (a la Whitey's), Tallula ain't the place, but they've managed to attract a number of old Whitey's regulars for beer and football.
BTW, I have a much longer review of the place in the Post's Weekend section tomorrow.

Submitting early because, well, I always forget to submit on time.
A friend of mine is going to try to quit smoking soon, and I'd like to support her and cut back a bit myself. We don't want to stop going out for a few drinks after work and on the weekends, but if we go to places where they LET us smoke, we probably will. Are there any fun, NONSMOKING bars in DC (preferably Dupont, Penn Quarter, Adams-Mo, Cleveland Park) where we can go for martinis, beers, and NO nicotene? Thanks!
Fritz: Halo is my favorite, but you might also try the upstairs bar at Cafe Saint-Ex, which is non-smoking until 11 or so.

Arlington, Va.:
Submitting early - Any further word on Molly Malone's in Clarendon? Last I heard, it was a cookie cutter Irish themed bar with dirty taps and a guitar player displayed a la Potbelly's. Is it really this bad?
Fritz: Yes. But a friend of mine compared the faux-stonework to "a LEGO castle," which I thought was much better than anything I'd come up with. I'm kind of sad, because it looks good from the outside and it's run by three Irishmen. Maybe they can still get their act together.

Hey GOGs!
I checked out your chat for the first time last week and now I'm hooked!
Any good suggestions on where to check out the Saturday night NY Jets game in the Metro Center, Penn Quarter, Chinatown area?
Thanks!
Fritz: I'd tell you to go to the 51st State in Foggy Bottom, which is a hotbed of NY support, and they offer discounts to Jets fans. If you're set on sticking around there, though, it will probably be on the large projection screens at RFD, or maybe the bar at Matchbox. (If you just want a big ol' sports bar, try the Grand Slam in the Grand Hyatt Hotel at Metro Center.)

Hi Gurus: I really miss summer and the pool and I have a major craving to go swimming! Do you know if any hotels in DC sell passes to use their pools? Either for the day, weekend, or whatever.
Thanks!
Anne: I called a few of the most glam hotel pools and they all said no dice. I'd bet that public indoor pools probably have cheaper rates. It's a real drive from DC, but for a special trip to buoy your spirits, it's worth it: the Olney Swim Center. It's a huge facility, with a giant slide, sauna, big lap lanes, not at all crowded on a Sunday.

Bethesda, MD:
What's the scoop on Indebleu? Are the drinks pricey? Is there a dress code? Are there DJs every night? Thanks!
Fritz: It's stylish and crowded -- Martinis (there are 50) hover around $10. There's no dress code, and IndeBleu has siphoned a few Eighteenth Street Lounge-related DJs for their bar, which stays open late. DJs are Weds-Sat at the moment, I'm told, and there's no cover. RHome and I have more details and a DJ schedule in the This Week in Nightlife column.

Hey there GoG's, I'm on a quest to find something to do with my boyfriend this weekend that is a bit more novel than our typical "dinner and a rental" saturday night "date". We're into live music, theatre/dance, bar hopping, indie flicks, long walks on the beach and kittens (oh wait, that's another column...). Any suggestions?
Jen: If you're up for venturing to Silver Spring, you could catch a movie at the AFI Silver and grab a bite at Jackie's. For theater, you might check the Ticketplace listings to see if there are half-price seats to any shows that interest you. Obviously there are tons of other things you could do, too. Try playing around in the Entertainment Guide and see what you can find.

Hey, even though I have a severe lack of coordination, I would really like to go salsa dancing (or dancing where there is latin music) tonight. Where is best to go on a thursday night in DC (or even Bethesda)for drinks and dancing?
P.S. What are the gurus favorite bars/lounges in DC that are open late night? Everything seems to close around 1 (or 2 on the weekends, aside from a handful)
Thanks so much, love you guys!
Rhome: If you're trying to rumba, mambo and salsa tonight, head to Divino Lounge in Bethesda or Habana Village in the District.
There aren't too many late night establishments in this town in general. When I'm out past 3 am, I'm at Red, Five or D.C. Sanctuary. Otherwise I head to a late night eating spot once the bars and clubs close.

Any scoop on the new Ugly Mug on 8th St SE?
Fritz: I was in last weekend -- the opening weekend -- and I think the place has lots of potential, but I'm going to let them finish decorating, get the credit card machine working, etc., before writing a review. They have 36-38 taps (but only 18 beers) and five huge flatscreen TVs behind a super-long bar, so sports viewing is the name of the game. The chef comes from Matchbox, so the menu is filled with eclectic pizzas and some excellent mini-burgers served on crisp, buttery little buns. I like it, but as I said, it's a work in progress.

Not an activity related question, but rather people related. When you go out to check out new places how often do you see people out by themselves? Thinking of going solo, but can't help feeling a little apprehensive about getting "Poor me" stares. Any advice?
Thanks!!! Love the Chat!
Joe: Be brave Clinton. Don't worry about it. If people are pitying you, that's their problem. There's too much interesting stuff going on to miss out on it just because you think it's lame to be on your own. Who knows, you may even start to like it.

Hi GOGs! My friend and I want to go salsa dancing this weekend, either Friday or Saturday night, preferably somewhere in the District. We're just two gals, so we're looking for a place where it's not necessary to bring your dance partner with you. I promised my friend that you would know a great place to go, b/c you seem to know everything about everywhere! Help me out, please - where should we take our dancing shoes?
Fritz: Friday: Habana Village or Bravo! Bravo!
Saturday: Yuca.
If you can leave the village, try Cococabana, which I think has a great scene and DJs.

Hey guys! Do you have any recommendations on some good salsa clubs in Adams Morgan or Dupont? Is Habana Village still around and would you recommend it? Thanks so much!
Rhome: Habana's still around and they hold it down. It's still a great place for the salsa scene. Rumba Cafe is also in Adam's Morgan and has about as much space to dance in as a closet, but the live bands are excellent and people work it without getting claustrophic. In Dupont, Five has a latin night on Thursdays but the salsa will be mixed with hip-hop and other club fare. Monday nights at Lucky Bar are also pillars of the scene. And I can't forget Tuesday nights at Cafe Citron, and Yuca also, but only on weekends.

We need someplace cheap, comfortable, with a good atmosphere conducive to catching up and griping about work. Not out to meet boys, so hopefully a place where we won't be hit on. California Pizza Kitchen is an old favorite but we'd like to try something new and unique - suggestions, oh wise gurus??
Maura: For dinnner on the cheaper side in Dupont: Luna Cafe, Thaiphoon or the Childe Harold. That last pick might be your best bet -- they've got good burgers too.

We are looking for a good bar that is relatively low key, but somewhere that we can dance (we were planning on going to Kingpin, but it apparently burned down). Our latest thought is Chief Ike's. Any other ideas? Also looking for a good restaurant nearby that a big group of us could eat at beforehand.
Fritz: Yep. Kingpin burned down on Christmas Day -- someone apparently dropped a lit cigarette in a trash can on Christmas Eve. I'd agree about Chief Ike's, and my second suggestion would be Wonderland.

I love the going out gurus for their great advice and wanted to ask them to pass on something different for meeting great singles. I work at the blood donor center at the Washington Hospital Center and we are planning our first "happy hour singles-only blood drive" on Jan 19th from 4 to 7 p.m. It just makes SO much sense - blood donors are great people - why not help them meet each other while they help save lives! We're going to "inaugurate" the idea that eve. We'll have non-alcoholic drinks, happy hour snacks with an inaugural theme and other treats for them as well. call 202-877-5250 for all the info and directions (we'll validate their parking as well). We (donor center staff) are really hoping that the donors (and us) can have some fun with this! We have another one planned for 3/23 with a St. Pats day theme, but we have to do well with this first one. Thanks so much for your help, Christina Kavanagh (nurse at WHC)

Darling GoG's, I need your help!
My 24th birthday is rapidly approaching, and I need a fun place to go out in DC that night (it's a Friday). Requirements: Fun dance floor - not insanely crowded, but not empty - and a DJ that plays top 40/hip hop, at a place where I can show up with a crew of about 15 girls around 11 p.m. and not have to wait in line for 85 thousand minutes. As if that's not enough, I also need it to be a place where our guy friends can meet up with us and comfortably sit around and be twenty-something guys (aka, be too cool to dance and only hang out at the bar). Additionally, it should be a place that is NOT mobbed with college students, but still has a twenty-something crowd.
Thank you so much for your help! I'm sick of the bars and Arlington (we go to Clarendon Ballroom, Clarendon Grill, Whitlows and Rock Bottom often) and want to try something new and get out in the city! I figure if anyone would know what to try, it's you. Thank you!
Fritz: Wow. Rhome and I are kind of stumped, thanks to all these stipulations. But we think that Chief Ike's, the Angry Inch and McFadden's might all fit the bill, although there may be more college kids at McFadden's.

Hey Guys! Just wanted to thank you for the recommendation of Wonderland. A friend and I went there last night and loved it! It's just the type of laid-back, non-pretentious, character-having, friendly spot that DC needs more of. And it even has good food! wow! My only regret about last night was that we left Wonderland so we could check out another place we'd heard about, Vegas Lounge. However, when we got to Vegas at 11:20, we found it closed! What's up with that?
Thanks for doing what you do!
Fritz: No idea why New Vegas would be closed, unless there was a private party -- it's still buzzing on the weekends, apparently.
And Wonderland is a treasure. It was in my top 10 new bars and clubs last year, but it might even be in the top 10 overall these days.

31, fun and dashingly debonair
How bout tryin somethin new in '05?
Rhome: You're dashingly debonair, tried everything possible and you're still looking for us to help you out? You want us to compile our personal address books into a spreadsheet and email it to you? Even the Gurus have limits to our abilities. I'd turn the question back to you, what new things are you going to try in '05? Actually, this applies to EVERYONE. I've hit this point before but it won't hurt to pull out an old favorite since a new year is upon us. Every week we must mention at least one thing you haven't tried before, whether it's a type of dancing, live music, a theater event, a team sport, a volunteer organization, etc.. We don't mention dating sites because they need no facilitation.
Your job is whenever you see something completely foreign to you, get your inner intrepid adventurer together and go try it. Or tell us all the specific things you do participate in and we'll give you just the opposite to try.

What have you guys heard about the wednesday night open mic poetry readings at Bohemian Caverns?
Rhome: I haven't been in a while but considering it's been going for 4 years or so, Dehejia must really have something good going. The formula as I experienced it in the past was a good jazz house band, an open mic segment and a featured poet or performer. It's not a bad date night, when the talent is good it can get nice and cozy down there. I think there is a $10 - $15 consumption minimum.

Hi,
Which museums offer Jazz and dinner, or is it Jazz and Brunch? Regardless, I'm looking for a "cool" place to take my GF tonight.
Thanks
Maura: Tonight? Well, the Phillips holds its Artful Evening (with the Calder Miro show on view) until 8:30 this evening, but there's no dinner involved. The Corcoran is also open late, but no live music. Tomorrow night there's jazz at the National Museum of Natural History -- complete with eats and an IMAX movie. (As for brunch, that's the National Gallery and Corcoran). If you want straigtforward jazz, the Mose Allison Trio is at Blues Alley tonight. There's also the Pedro Almodovar festival at the AFI Silver Theatre that begins tonight. Stop by Mayorga for cofee before or after. I can't say for sure, but there's a good chance for live music there as well.

Is there a place nearby (WV, MD, or VA--maybe even PA) where you can use your personal car on a racetrack? I'd like to buy my husband time for his bday. Thanks!
Anne: Well, in a few moments of hunting, the closest one I see is in New Jersey, at Doug Foley's Drag Racing School. It seems that if you own a car that could conceivably be used in racing -- Camaro, Honda, Celica even, there is a racing club for your car model that could get you deeper into the sport. I sincerely hope you write us back to give an update on this adventure.

I can't believe I stumped you, Rhome and Fritz!
To clarify - one of my friends suggested Cafe Citron, though I've never been, but she thought it could be what I was looking for. I should have been more specific though - I've been to Angry Inch and there's often a weird crowd and sketchy, greasy old men on the dance floor. Chief Ikes is a little closer to what I'm looking for - any other suggestions along that line?
Thank you so much! Fritz: Citron is crowded, and there's not likely to be much room where 15 people can hang out together, unless you get there pretty early and can establish a spot in the basement. Also, they don't spin the hip-hop/Top 40 mix you were looking for -- more salsa and international. Along the lines of Chief Ike's, try Wonderland or maybe Stetson's...
Rhome: You may have specified yourself right out of a pool of perfect options. The only thing I can come up with outside of both of Fritz's responses is Crush. I'll co-sign with Fritz and suggest Wonderland as the best candidate.

Hi- Can you tell me a good, laid back place for a Saturday afternoon lunch date? The two of us are going to the National Gallery of Art after we eat.
Thanks,

Maura: Poste is a nice quiet spot for a Saturday lunch. From there it's an easy walk down 7th to the museum. Rosa Mexicana might be a more boisterous lunch spot, but Andale may be just right.
And for the rest of you, it's a great time to visit the National Gallery. The Dan Flavin show ends in two short weeks, plus there's plenty more to see.

To escape the inaugural um "festivities" we're leaving town on the 20th and visiting friends that evening in Wilmington, DE. Any thoughts on things to do/visit between here and there? Don't really know anything about DE - anything to do there?
thanks!
David: Did you ever see "Wayne's World"? The part when they got the more professional equipment and were making use of the blue screen to pretend to travel to exotic locations around the world? "Imagine being able to be magically whisked away to Delaware! Hi... I'm in Delaware." That about sums it up. You can visit all of the credit card companies that are headquartered there. That could be fun. Or put money in slot machines at Delaware Park or Dover Downs. Or buy stuff without tax.

Hi, I'm wondering about events planned during MLK day. I've already planned to volunteer at a service project during the day, anything happening that evening or the weekend prior?
David: Here is our current list of MLK day events. It will grow considerably in the next week, so be sure to check back.

Happy New Year! I am in the hunt for a wednesday night
hang-out spot that will satisfy my soul/non-mainstream
hip hop craving. I have been to asylum on mondays and
bar nun on fridays and I like the vibe (I think it's the
same dj at both places). Anything similar for a humpday
outing?
Rhome: You're out of luck on a Wednesday night but if you hold off until Thursday you can get Uncle Q's Living Room and FunkDC at Bossa within a block of each other.
