Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, May 15, 2003; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello everyone and thanks for joining us for what has to be the most important hour of your week. Or at least a good way to blow off 60 minutes while the boss thinks you're hard at work. And speaking of blowing off time, why don't you take a peek at our fabulous Best Bets contest where you can nominate your favorite bar, restaurant, theatre, local band, etc. This is Joe and today we've got Kate, Ann, Alexa, Jen, Maura and a young eager cub reporter named Fritz here to answer your questions. Let's get to it, shall we?

Soon to be somewhere in Fairfax County, Va.: Hello Gurus!

I'm positively estatic to have found you. We're moving to Fairfax County from far, far away and have absolutely EVERYTHING to learn about our new digs, the neighbors and what they do that's FUN. And this is a fabulous start! We're ardent foodies and will be celebrating our wedding anniversary we know not where. Would you kindly suggest a drop-dead romantic spot to dine and hold hands that's not extremely dear?

Thanks in advance!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Somewhere. Welcome to the area. Why don't you two love-birds treat yourselves to a fabulous dinner at 2941 in Falls Church (that borders Fairfax County to the northeast). I think you'll love it. -- Alexa

Washington, D.C.: Hello there Gurus,

Does Georgetown still have Third Fridays? I can't find any info about it. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, Third Fridays are still on in Georgetown. Head to the Canal Square galleries and check out the new shows at Parrish Gallery and Fraser Gallery and the last of Age of Unreason at MOCA DC. -- Maura

Fairfax, VA: My younger brother is graduating this weekend. I would like to take him and my parents somewhere nice to eat dinner in DC. I want to take him to somewhere thats kind of trendy (for my brother), but also somewhere that has a touch of class (for my parents). Thanks for doing a great job; I read your column every week.

The Going Out Gurus: Fairfax, I think I'm going to point you to Zaytinya or TenPenh or Zola. Greek, Asian and contemporary American respectively. -- Alexa

Bethesda, Md.: Have any of you guys ever been in the Yacht Club? Every time I walk by that place after having had a few I think it'd be good for a laugh to see how the "over 30 upscale crowd" gets down. Would I at 24 and not-so-upscale look absolutely ridiculous in there?

The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, we recommend you never make fun of anyone to their face. Only behind their backs. But if you want to hear from Tommy the Matchmaker, look here. -- Maura

Bethesda, MD: With bathing suit season just around the corner, it's time to show those body parts that have been hidden all winter. Where is a good place place to get a Brazilian Bikini Wax, and I don't mean the kind that they just clean up around the sides, but the kind where they get all those hard to reach places. Love the chats!

The Going Out Gurus: Hmm, this falls into the "little more information than we needed to know" category. Would anyone like to help Bethesda out with a recommendation.

re: brazilian bikini waxing: i think i want to change my career, becoming a brazilian bikini waxer would be my new choice of work.

The Going Out Gurus: Be careful what you wish for.

U St., Washington, DC: What's the scene like tonight at Chi-cha-cha-cha? I want to go for some drinks w/ friends at like midnight, but I don't want it to be crowded/noisy. And are there any drinks for guys on a budget? (Kudos to St. Ex for the $2 Miller High Life's, why can't every bar be cool?) I am not a deadbeat, just financially challenged.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, U Street. Tonight at Chi-Cha, there's no live music -- a DJ spinning Latin or world beat records, usually. It will be crowded around midnight, and there aren't any drink specials -- you'll probably be paying at least $5 per drink. The house chi-cha drink (which I sometimes find cloyingly sweet) is cheaper, I think. -- Fritz

Washington, DC: Hi. I'm being set up with someone who is not from the DC area. I am in charge of finding a place for dinner Saturday in Georgetown. I want fun and unique, but calm enough so we can have a discussion? I get the feeling this guy appreciates good food, though I don't want to choose one of the top priced restaurants. What's Mie N Yu like? Any other suggestions?? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Mie N Yu is a bit silly if you ask me, though I quite enjoyed the burger. Rather, go to Pizzeria Paradiso for some excellent pie. Not bad prices either. -- Alexa

Van Ness, Washington, D.C.: Hi --

Just wanted to throw out a recommendation. I visited the Hillwood House and Gardens Museum on Saturday for the first time -- and it was terrific. What an oasis, and so close to my place, I was shocked. Marjorie Merriweather Post was quite the homemaker -- and it's definitely worth a vist. Be sure to call ahead for reservations.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Van Ness, Hillwood is a great idea. If you've never been, now is a great time with their gardens in bloom. And their special exhibition -- housed in the estate's Dacha -- is worth a visit in and of itself. -- Maura

Capitol Hill DC: Hi Gurus,
It's a fellow employee's last day and so our office is taking her out to The Reef for happy hour. We were hoping for good weather to use their deck but now they're forecasting rain. Any idea how crowded it gets around 6:30pm? Will our group of about 10-15 people be able to find a place to sit together you think? Thanks so much for your help!

The Going Out Gurus: I'd wager you'll be fine, Capitol Hill. I was in briefly on my way home last night, and the roof was slammed (I was told it was like that all day). Most of the booths aren't big enough for 15 people, but I'm sure you can get two adjacent. Ask for the booths near the Lionfish and his new roommate Pufferfish, as they're the largest. -- Fritz

Waxing response:: PIAF does a good Brazilain wax- see Vera. It is very expensive though. Today's Look also does them for a more reasonable price.

The Going Out Gurus: Ok, thanks.

Uptown: Celadon does Brazilians (347-3033), F Street and 12th. But there's a GREAT place in Georgetown...Turkish owned. I am blanking on the name right now. It's either on N or Prospect. I highly recommend it.

The Going Out Gurus: Apparently there are lots of Brazilian waxed folks out there. Thanks for the tips.

Washington, DC 20009: I swear this isn't a plug for the DC Underground Film Festival! I'm interested in going, but it sounds like the passes are all-day for Saturday or Sunday. What are the highlights if I just want to check out like a couple of hours?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi there. Actually, you can get $6 tickets for a single program, each of which consists of about 90 minutes of short films. So it's easy to check out part of the festival without spending the entire day. If you're an indie rock fan, program 2 on Saturday might be up your alley: a Le Tigre video and a film starring Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney are part of that bill. And on Sunday, program 7 sounds promising: "Grrrly Show," a documentary about girly Zines, and "Investigation of a Flame," about a Vietnam protest at a Maryland draft board office, are included in that line-up. Hope this helps. -- Jen

Alexandria, VA: I NEED to get to the beach more frequently. Driving all the way to Ocean City or DE is very time-consuming. I heard about a place right near the Bay Bridge that is pretty convenient. Any hints or suggestions on how to find out about more outdoor water activity spots in the area?

The Going Out Gurus: We hear you, Alexandria. You're thinking of Sandy Point State Park, which lies beneath the Bay Bridge. The bay is quiet and warm -- relax on the beach and laugh at those fools crawling along on the bridge overhead. For more fun on the water, check out these places to go kayaking, canoeing and sailing. -- Anne

Alexandria, VA: What do you think is the best rooftop/romantic restaurant in the city? Good food+good view?

The Going Out Gurus: For rooftop romance, I have to say Perry's. Now that new management has refreshed the menu, I think it's looking elegant and twinkly through and through. It's expensive, but the food (modern American or sushi)is refined. That said, there are still rules that irk me: There is a minimum charge of $15 for food (no money spent toward drinks applies). Thoughtful little wine list.

Most romantic? For my money, brunch at the Tabbard Inn can be a lazy, starry-eyed affair. Sit outside under the silks of a parachute or in, and have the works: fresh juice and coffee and an entree (eggs florentine, crab cakes) and dessert (homemade sorbets, key lime flan). -- Kate

Springfield VA: Do you know of any bars in the Alexandria/Arlington area that have the electronic quiz games that play out over the TV screens above the bar? You know, the ones where you compete against others in the bar to answer a set of questions as fast as you can using a mini keyboard provided by the bar. Those are a lot of fun and I really enjoy them during Monday Night Football where you rack up points based on your ability to guess the next play.

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, NTN. That's such a fun game when you're with friends in a bar. I usually play it at Uncle Jed's in Bethesda, but if you visit the NTN Web site, you can do a search by city and state. Good luck! -- Fritz

Rockville, MD: Hello you fabulous people you,

Every week I download the top 5 songs on mp3.washingtonpost.com to see what's going on out there. Do you know anything about this weeks' top 5? Anybody ever seen some or all?

Pharmacy Prophets (1 and 2)
Matt Shell
Bizzy Biz
Canadian Invasion

Rocking in Rockville

The Going Out Gurus: In the words of Sgt. Schulz, we know nothing. Anyone seen/heard these bands out on the town?

Baltimore, MD: Seven of us are coming to the Warner Theatre on Friday to see the 11pm Dave Chappelle show. Wanted to get dinner within walking distance before the show. We've got two teenage boys with us, so it can't be anything too trendy or expensive. Any suggestions? Do you think we can just wander around looking for a place without making reservations? Thinking about eating around 9pm. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I recommend that you try Chef Geoff's. Its menu provides a number of options that aren't too expensive, and it's directly across the street from the Warner, so you won't be late. Do try to make reservations, though, as I'm sure others Chapelle fans may try to follow the same plan. If you want other options, take a look at this pre-theater dining guide. -- Jen

Arlington, VA: OK, seriously guys, what's the deal with this spray-on tanning stuff(mystic tanning maybe?) Where do I go, how much, etc?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington,

It is called Mystic Tan, and it's actually a booth that you step into to and get misted with a tanning solution, which is calibrated on your skin type. To read more about it, try clicking on the site: Mystic Tan. It also maps to locations near you.

Happy sunless sunning.

Woodley Park, Washington, DC: Someone mentioned a Reston Arts Show/Festival this weekend. Sounded kind of interesting if the weather holds up, is there anyplace to find more info about this?

The Going Out Gurus: Woodley, the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival will be held at the Reston Town Center this weekend -- both days 10-6. Along with hundreds of arts and crafts there's live music. Sounds good, no? And, oh yes, they'd like a $5 donation please. -- Maura

Washington, DC 20009: Philosophy question: is it better to promote fun events and cool bars and have them overrun with sight-seers or do you think that maybe more bars will open with similar vibes as a result of all the attention? Thinking specifically of St. Ex that seems to be gasping for air w/ all the suburbanites on weekends.

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, finally this turns into a philosophical discussion. We've been waiting for this particular tipping point. It's always a bummer when someone discovers your secret hideout, but what to do? Any thoughts, readers?

Dupont Circle: Guide me, gurus! Where can I find a bar where Secret Service guys hang out? Do they ever get drinks in uniform, ear piece and mirror lenses? Or is this just fantasy? Do any of you share this—I hate to say it—fetish?

The Going Out Gurus: I think this might be one of those "if we told you, we'd have to kill you" answers. I, Kate, can with an all but rock solid amount of surity tell you secret service men never get drinks in uniform. That would be drinking on the job (quite a matter apart from our Fritz's hard work). As unlikely as ponying up to a bar next to a fireman in emergency yellow thigh-high boots and a 12 foot hose ...

Anyone know where to find these guys outside the line of fire?

Fairfax, VA: Hey GOGS, love the chat. What are some cool vintage clothing stores in Northern Virginia? I've heard it mentioned once or twice here. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Fairfax,
Jen recently touched a few in her piece about reliving the '60s, '70s and '80s. I like Now! Music and Fashion and Remix. -- Fritz

Fairfax, VA: I love you guys! I want to be a guru, too!!A few weeks ago someone said something about Matrix Reloaded opening on IMAX two weeks after the regular theatre premiere. You said you'd find out, is it true?

The Going Out Gurus: Fairfax: Yes, there will be an IMAX version of "Reloaded," but it doesn't come out until late June. I (Jen) am still not sure if it's coming to D.C., but I hope to find out soon. (I have a feeling it may screen in Baltimore and not here, but that's just a hunch. Haven't confirmed). Don't worry, I'll keep you posted. To occupy yourself in the meantime, take a look at our "Matrix" guide, including this video.

Washington, DC: Do any of you know what's going on with the supposed reopening of Whisper in Adams Morgan?

The Going Out Gurus: Yep. Whisper is now owned by John Boyle (of Nation, Modern, Five and Mie N Yu fame), and he's converting it to a four-level Asian-themed bar and club. It's set to open later this year. That's all I know... -- Fritz

Washington, DC: How did you guys get your jobs as the going out guru's? What else do you do besides this chat?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, let's see. Most of us have Doctorates, two of us are Rhodes scholars, and one of us has yet to finish high school. Anne works with horses, Joe's a professional stunt man, Fritz gives manicures at Landmark Mall...

PIck me! Pick me!: Okay, this is sort of a girly question. I am looking for a place to get a great extraction facial (the kind where they remove all of the "impurities"). I am in need of a recommendation of a specific facialist at a specific salon that does a great, thorough facial. I am willing to pay up to $100.00. Suggestions please! Oh... DC or Montgomery County, MD is best. Thank you!

The Going Out Gurus: Serenity Day Spa in Tenley gets high marks. Have you ever been to the long trusted Jolie in Bethesda? Here, facials start at $70 and prices climb according to skin type and products selected. Here are all the Maryland-based day spas in our database. -- Kate

Secret Agent Men: I've spotted them a bunch of times at the Bottom Line at 17th and I downtown. Usually it's on the slower nights (Monday through Wednesday) and usually in the hours after happy hour.

The Going Out Gurus: SAM I am. Thanks!

Arlington, VA: Have you guys tried Pesce (the restaurant in Dupont)? How does it compare to Johnny's Half Shell? We have 2 friends coming into town, and want a delicious meal in that area (or Adams Morgan) where we can actually hear what we're saying to each other (and not wait hours for a table). Type of food not important, as long as it's good.
Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Pesce, you'll love it. Johnny's Half Shell is LOUD! -- Alexa

one and done?: Whatever happened to Ali?

The Going Out Gurus: Unfortunatali has returned to her beautiful home state of Iowa.

chillin on da mall: gurus, can you tell me if you happen to know the theme of this summer's smithsonians's folk life festival?

and do you think the weather outside will ever get hot?

The Going Out Gurus: Why I do happen to know. This year's triad includes Scotland, Mali and Appalachia -- the birthplace of country music. They've got all sorts of great music, food, crafts lined up. We'll have more exact information up in early June. I' can't wait.

As for the heat, I can wait. -- Maura

re: secret service: I've met some at The Exchange and Old Ebbitt. Generally anything around the White House can be a safe bet.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the secrets, for the service.

Arlington, VA: hey gurus - What do you know about Matchbox? thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Delicious pizza, long waits, stupid drink menu, waitstaff with very good thighs. -- Alexa

Secret Service: Just stay away -- bad experiences...don't ask...besides a real agent won't tell you what he/she does until a couple meetings in.

The Going Out Gurus: Don't ask? But how will we ever learn?

Brazilian wax...: In Bethesda, try the JACQUES DESSANGE spa just down Wisconsin in Chevy Chase, right outside Hectchs. They do brazilian waxes for $35. They do a good job and $35 is the cheapest I've found for a brazilian wax in the area. Be prepared for pain!!!

The Going Out Gurus: ok thanks. I think we've exhausted the brazilian wax topic.

Washington,DC: Hey Gurus!! Thinking about going to the DC Chili Cookoff on Saturday, have any of you been? We are a pretty conservative bunch. Does it get too "crazy" with the bands or can we chili aficianados go and relax with a nice bowl of beans?

The Going Out Gurus: I wouldn't worry, DC. Good things come in threes, the Chili Cookoff must want us to believe, because the headliners of the show are Three Doors Down and Third Eye Blind. Folks will come to the cookoff for many reasons, some like you, for chili, and others for the bands and a chance to swill beer in the street. Perhaps some of the Three Doors Down fans in the crowd will best know the band for their song "Semi-Charmed Life," which, as I recall, was used in ads for "The Tigger Movie." -- Anne

Daate in Georgetown: How about Pappa Razzi? It's medium-priced Italian food in a cool setting. Then you can walk it off along the canal.

The Going Out Gurus: That's one idea...

Dinner in Georgetown: Another great resturant for a date, Mendocino Wine Bar and Grille. Good food, quiet atmosphere.

The Going Out Gurus: And another.

Vermont and L, Washington, DC: shhh, don't tell anyone but i just raided the office fridge and took someones grated "parmesean cheese" and put it on my lunch

The Going Out Gurus: Oh, like we're not going to tell. You are so busted.

Drive ins!: Gurus,
I came from a Chicago suburb where drive-in movies were the rage among my pals. Where can a girl take in a film with her sweetheart, in a car, and pretend to be a 1950's teenager for a few hours here in the Delmarva region?

The Going Out Gurus: Answer: Bengie's Drive-In. It's outside Baltimore and is the place to be for the '50s drive-in experience. If you go, report back and tell us how you liked it. -- Jen

Mayberry, NC: Went to St. Ex last weekend, and as I was prepared to pay my 200 dollar bar tab, I was exposed as "suburbanite". In the future I will find other places to spend my money as I'm sure the proprietors just want revenue generated from NW.

The Going Out Gurus: Good one, Mayberry.

Adams Morgan, Washington, DC: I'm headed out on the town with some friends on Friday night and would love some suggestions on places to go. We want to get out of Adams Morgan and try some of the new places downtown. Is there a place you would recommend with good people watching and some sort of dance floor--or at least good music? We don't want a huge dance club, but more of a lounge atmosphere. Thanks for any suggestions you can give us.

The Going Out Gurus: You know, Adams Morgan, finding a lounge with a dance floor can be tricky. One suggestion is Modern, where you'll get some cool underground hip-hop and downtempo music, as well as your quota of people watching. (Okay, it's not really new, but the night is.) McFadden's is fun, but skews a little toward the just-out-of-college, but again, that makes for good people watching. Also on Fridays, I dig Lounge 201, where Adrian Loving spins old-school funk and classics. No dancing, though.

And, of course, there's Juste Lounge, which has both live music (neo-soul) and DJs on separate floors, cheap martinis (visit Justelounge.com for more info) and a cool crowd. -- Fritz

searching for something...: Hello Gurus! Do you know if there is a way to search your chats for specific info? If not, has the Post ever considered creating a search engine so that we chatters don't have to keep sending you requests for info you've posted a million times on previous chats? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Well, we didn't create it, Google did, but of course we have thought of a way to provide the info to you. You'll find the answer on our help page. Will you promise to help us spread the word about this wonderful tool? -- Anne

Stanton Park: Looking forward to checking out the City Museum soon! Are there any special activities they're having that we plebians may attend? Have y'all checked it out/had a preview?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Stanton Park, I checked out the City Museum earlier this week. I was less enthralled by the multimedia show than I was by the exhibits themselves -- the one on sports in Washington was a particular fave. As for programs, Sunday is free admission and there will be live music. Saturday a scavenger hunt. Find more right here. But absolutely go see it. We're long overdue for such a museum and it's a thrill it's finally here. -- Maura

Dumfries, VA: Just fyi, the link to Hillwood puts you back at the top of the GOG page.

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry Dumfries, try this.

Farragut Square, Washington D.C.: Any of you gurus been to Panevino, over in the West End? I have a $50 gift certificate (from Dine Out DC) for my birthday to either Nick and Stef's or Panevino. I'm not a huge steak eater, but would rather that than a ho-hum b-day dinner if Panevino isn't too great.

The Going Out Gurus: I'd go to Nick & Stef's. -- Alexa

From the 'Burbs: Love the Chat! Question: Have a group of friends coming in from out of town this weekend to celebrate a birthday. If you had to choose some bars to hit after dinner, what would you suggest in Dupont Circle? Would like to stay away from the places with too much attitude. Also, what are the better dance clubs in Dupont?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, it really depends on how big the group is, and what kind of venues you want to hit. For a casual couple of beers, there's the Brickskeller or the Big Hunt. For beer and pool, Buffalo Billiards. For sophisticated cocktails without the dress code, it's Savino's. As far as dance clubs: Saturdays at Apex are now Liquid Ladies, which draw a mostly lesbian crowd. Cafe Citron has salsa and Latin music. Five and Red both offer house music, in either a large or intimate setting (although I was really loving Five's roof last weekend). -- Fritz

Alexandria, VA: Gurus! Let me start of by saying you guys rock! Now on to my dilemma....I'm going to the Margaret Cho show on Sat, May 31st at 10:30. I'm thinking the show will probably let out around midnight, June 1st, which happens to my 30th birthday. Is there anywhere around the theatre where my partner, some friends, and myself can grab a drink? I was thinking of the rooftop at the Hotel Washington, but haven't been there in years. What's the terrace like after midnight on a Saturday? If not there, where? Some place cool, with a loungy vibe would be great like Helix. However, we'd rather not trek all the way to Dupont, due to the late hour and we all have to get up fairly early Sunday morning for a previously planned breakfast. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

The Going Out Gurus: The bar on the roof of the Hotel Washington is open until 1 a.m., so you could go there and chance finding a table at that time. I might also consider a glass of champers ($14 for Tattinger) in the Round Robin Bar at the Willard Hotel (closes at 1 a.m. also).

Not to be overlooked, Ten Penh's bar is luxurious. What about punch-colored cocktails at Ortanique? Saturday nights is "Solaris" a Latin dance party with a $10 cover though. I hear Red Sage has a new chef reviving the spot. Might be nice for margaritas. -- Kate

Date in Georgetown: The bar at Sea Catch is nice and usually quiet, plus a great selection of oysters and half priced appetizers at happy hour. Good place to start.

The Going Out Gurus: More date ideas.

Washington, DC 20009: Why are the Virginians so touchy about being called suburbanites. Duh, that's what you are. And clearly everyone can appreciate the concept of hanging out at a neighborhood bar without a bunch of randoms just looking for the 'scene.'

The Going Out Gurus: Oh, we're not starting up this again, are we D.C? Let's put this tired old debate to bed, once and for all.

dearest kate, : will you go to the prom with me?

The Going Out Gurus: Good God yes. I've never been asked to a prom before. We don't have them in Canada.

Uptown: I met a shady secret service guy at 1223. I refused to give him my phone number because I had my suspicions about him right off the bat. Instead I gave him my e-mail address and it didn't take long to dig up the dirt on him. He was always bugging me to call him, kept sending me his cell and work numbers, but only during daylight hours. Like I suspected, he was married.

The Going Out Gurus: This is juicy stuff, thanks Uptown!

Washington, D.C.: Hey Guys, I hear D.C. Carnival is around the corner and I was wondering how do I go about being an official part of it (costumes, part of a band, etc.). This is my first one here in D.C. so I'm not sure what to expect.

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: The Caribbean Carnival runs a parade, festival and concert the last weekend in June. To get in on the action, contact the organizers at this site. -- Anne

L Street, Washington, DC: Does it reflect poorly upon the inhabitants of our great metropolis that so many think to ask questions about bikini waxes and facials in a "Got Plans?" discussion? By the way, know any hip places I can get my teeth whitened?

The Going Out Gurus: If your dentist does bikini waxes, then you've really got something.

Washington, DC: Gurus, I heard there is a Salsa competition tomorrow at Ortanique? Any details? how is there Sat nite gig coming along? Gracias

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. Ortanique's salsa contest tomorrow starts around 10:30. I think it'll be a blast to watch -- they've been holding preliminary comps for a few weeks now. I keep hearing mixed reviews about Saturdays. Some people think the music is cheesy. Others love the lounge atmosphere, with the option of a dance floor. -- Fritz

Brewhouse/Movie: I loved the Cinema and Brewhouse in VA I visited a few weeks ago to take in Frida, but I wonder if anyone knows of others? I live in SS, so something MoCo or surrouding would be preferred.

The Going Out Gurus: Unfortunately, since the Bethesda Theatre Cafe closed, there really aren't any cinema and drafthouse-type places in MoCo. If you've been to the Cinema and Drafthouse, you could also try the Sterling Cinema (though that's farther away than Arlington) or Annapolis Cinema Grill. If others know of more, please speak up. -- Jen

Free: Please give me an idea of free things to do this weekend (other than visiting musuems in the District or the zoo)! I need something different to do, but am seriously low on funds. Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Lookee here.

Morgan Adams: Anne - third eye blind wrote semi-charmed life not three doors down. Not that it matters much because both bands are utterly forgettable but I expect more out of a self proclaimed guru.

Fritz - a friend that knows you says you're a sissy and probably spend your alone time in a kimono sipping fruity drinks. Is this true?

The Going Out Gurus: I don't own a kimono.

secret service: I know I said don't ask, but I had the same experience as Uptown. Shady.....

The Going Out Gurus: Slim shady indeedy lady. More details, please.

Columbia, MD: Hi,

My birthday is coming up soon and I was hoping to gather a bunch of friends together to go out in D.C. on Friday night. I might have dinner with a few people first and then meet the rest and maybe hit a bar/lounge/or club. I'd like to find a place that's both loungy for those who don't want to dance and clubby for those of us who do. Also, it should be metro accessible. Maybe somewhere in Dupont? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: See the previous answer about Dupont, but I'd say that Five might fit the bill in good weather -- those who don't want to dance can hangout on the Jamaican-themed rooftop with a Red Stripe or rum cocktail while the rest of you dance to house and electronic dance music. Cafe Citron might work, too, as there's dancing downstairs and seating upstairs. -- Fritz

Old Town, Alexandria, Va.: GOG, Live for the chats. Need a place in Old Town Alexandria that noone knows about. Looking for a cheap beer, good appetizers, a few quiet friendly locals (30+sthings), and a pleasant bartender.

The Going Out Gurus: Psst: I love the Bayou room, downstairs from 219. It's a little dive that's never as crowded as it should be. If you want something more upscale, the bar and piano lounge at the Morrison House Hotel has never disappointed me. -- Fritz

Somewhere, VA: Hi GOGs! Are you all going to publish a guide of things to do for Memorial Day?

The Going Out Gurus: Our Summer Guide will take you from Memorial Day to the summer beyond. For events happening that weekend, just type "Memorial Day" into our blue search box. You can also use our calendar and navigate to the day you want to find events happening on a certain day. Biggies are the NSO concert at the Capitol, Rocville's Hometown Holidays fair and the Rolling Thunder motorcycle ride.

Gaithersburg, MD: Hi GOGS! Can you recommend an outdoor or semi-outdoor location for a party that allows beer and live music? Preferably in Maryland, and not too expensive. Probably around 100 people? As always, THANKS!

The Going Out Gurus: Gaithersburg, we can't think of one, so let's throw this out to the crowd.

Glenn Dale MD: Hi
I will turn the big 50 in August. I wnat to show all of my friends a good time in DC. They are all about my age (or age to be!) Any suggestions? By the way, I love your chats.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Glen Dale. What are you looking for? Music, atmosphere (dressy? casual?) and how many people? Let us know and we'll come up with something.

Washington DC: Kate,

What's the scoop on the new "Health Bar" next to Results the Gym on U Street. I've heard mixed reviews - from great smoothies, to weird staff who go around collecting towels. Would love to get your expert take!

Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Happy to. Is this a set up?

I've had the smoothies several times but I've only been in to sit and dine once (for breakfast), and in truth is, my experience was a mixed bag. The coffee was disappointing but the blended o.j. and papaya juice has zing. I admire the flexibility of the short-order kitchen: you can Atkins anything, and the menu alerts extreme athletes (and extreme snoozers like me) to plates (like Asian Style Tofu Salad) that contain no trans-fatty acids. Health Bar make a mean burger but it's served with unlovable fries. They have happy hour cocktail specials every night of the week, but I'm happy to stick with the smoothies (except for the one involving Red Bull. That stuff is for amatures.). -- Kate

Falls Church, Va.: Hi. Can you recommend a place in DC or Alexandria for a couple women in their late thirties to have drinks where it's not too stuffy but we'll be surrounding by people our age? Thanks for your input.

The Going Out Gurus: You might try the International Bar, or Aroma. If you're willing to venture just over the Key Bridge into Arlington, you can hit Continental, which Fritz writes about in tomorrow's Weekend section. -- Jen

Bethesda, Md: Hello, Gurus! I am anticipating the ethnic festivals held in Baltimore this summer, but cannot find a link to them from either the city or the Sun papers web site. Since you ARE the gurus, I'll bet YOU can find one. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Find one? Are you kidding? We can find 10. Polish, Latino, Korean ... take your pick.

sorry to get your hopes up kate, : but like the shady secret service guy, i'm married, not quite married but soon to be anyway.

The Going Out Gurus: I feel so used.

Sunnydale, CA: Where oh where can I see my beloved Buffster take her last dance with the Big Bad this Tuesday?

Are there any viewing parties, or must I shed my bitter tears alone on my couch?

(PS a place that will switch immediately to "24" would be best).

The end of Buffy and Jack, who will save us now?

The Going Out Gurus: We haven't heard about any planned "Buffy" viewing parties. Anyone out there know of one?

Va: I like to eat at National Airport. What the best way to park and eat and then leave?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, I love it too, soak in that whole vibe, without having the stress of going anywhere. Take the Metro, Silly. Where do you eat? Or are you asking me for ideas? I'm not quite sure. -- Alexa

Arlington, VA: Gurus, you're slacking. To guy who wants outdoor spots in MD: Try Poolesville Public Golf Course -- they have a big picnic/pavilion area you can rent out; Smokey Glen Farm has the same, plus they'll do hayrides, BBQ, etc.; virtually all of the public parks have pavilions you can reserve (alochol not technically allowed but easy to get away with).

The Going Out Gurus: You're not suggesting readers break the law, are you Arlington?

An Office in Northern Virginia: My girl and I and our two dogs -NEED- to get away this weekend. We were planning to go backpacking in the Shenandoah park, but the weather forecast doesn't look like it is going to cooperate. What suggestions would you have for getting away without spending more than four or five hours in a car (each way) and/or more than a couple of hundred bucks in total?

The Going Out Gurus: There's tons of places you could go. Given that you sound interested in the outdoors and that it might be a cloudy/rainy weekend, have you considered spending a night or two in a cabin, maybe in the Shenandoah or West Virginia? I believe there are places that rent small, rustic houses for the weekend -- do some searching online and see what you find. If the weather clears up, you can do the backpacking thing. If not, you can cozy up in your cabin with a good book and maybe a warm fire. Sounds pretty heavenly to me. -- Jen

Bethesda, MD: So, I dearly love Red for clubbing... good spinning, great vibe, and people actually dancing. That's great and all, but it would be nice to have a change of pace. Any suggestions for similar clubs and scenes in DC or MD (Lemur is a hike for me)? Or maybe a suggestion for pre-Red entertainment in the Dupont-ish area from 10ish to 1sh--I've had to resort to Rumors as a pre-Red dancing/hanging out place, and that's just sad. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, I'd suggest you sample the delights of the Sanctuary. The club has reopened at 1355 H St. NE on Fridays and Saturdays (although it's closed for a party tomorrow). You'll probably recognize many of the DJs, as they include some of Red's best -- Sam 'the Man' Burns and Doug '95 North' Smith -- as well as Taha, Mandrill and Oji. I haven't been yet, but I loved the vibe at their old location. Also, there's a new party at Kendejah on upper Georgia Avenue (5828 Georgia) with many of the same DJs.

As for pre-Red suggestions, hmmmm. If you go on Friday, there's always the $15 top-shelf open bar at MCCXXIII from 5 to 9. -- Fritz

Re: Old Town: Never had a bad experience at Southside 815. Bartenders are ALWAYS wonderful, food is great and drinks are pretty cheap. At least the nights I was there (cheap molsen if there's a hockey game on).

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, Southside. It's a gem.

Georgetown tech corridor, Washington, DC: my dear GOGs...haven't been able to read real time of late...but am disappointed by fellow readers. must we rehash spas every week? enough with the suburbs/city debates. both have advantages and disadvantages and most of us spend time (socially, workwise, shopping, etc) in both. get over it. oh, and lastly, what's with the secret service bashing? sketchy people are not just in law enforcement...

oh, and here's my question. best nachos in the area? suggestions? chadwicks (yes, really) and hard times are some favorites, but we're looking for new places where the chips are strong and the cheese throughly melted. you rock.

The Going Out Gurus: Next week, we're only taking best nachos questions/recommendations.

Washington, D.C.: Does anyone know of public pools in the area or where I can gain access to a private pool at a hotel or gym? Already have gym membership, so wanted to know if they had a separate (cheaper) pool-only policy.

The Going Out Gurus: Public pools are a mixed bag. Arlington and Montgomery counties are rich in solid public pools. In D.C. I can only recommend the one in the West End.

I just got word the Washington Plaza Hotel (at Thomas Circle) will offer a special summertime weekend rate that includes a room, a complimentary cocktail and full pool priviledges for $89. I've misplaced the release, if you'd like to e-mail me (kate.gibbs@washingtonpost.com), I'll zap you the details when I put it up online.

re: Smokey Glen Farm: They are really expensive and won't let you in unless you plan your party (complete with large deposit) several weeks in advance.

The Going Out Gurus: ok, thanks.

I'm not married, Kate....: And just put in my preoder for the Old School Special Edition DVD.

The Going Out Gurus: How big is your tv?

Arlington, VA: Please, please help me! I have a BIG 2nd date on
Sunday, and he's wanting to do the walk around
the mall thing. Any good suggestions where to
go, museum wise, and then for a cool lunch
somewhere in the area?

The Going Out Gurus: A BIG date, well done, Arlington. Museum wise head down for the last days of Gerhard Richter at the Hirshhorn. Two of my favorites right now are at the Sackler -- Isamu Noguchi and Auto Focus. The Sackler's always so quiet, so you can chat it up a bit (not too loudly). Natural History has two great photography shows -- Eliot Porter and Subhankar Banerjee. Afterwards, grab a bite at Cafe Atlantico or Poste. Zaytinya and Jaleo are sweet ideas for sharing. Alexa favors these spots as well. Enjoy. -- Maura

Please oh wise ones...: I need your help. Three couples are going out Saturday as a last goodbye to one couple that is moving away. Need a great, but affordable place to dine that has decent beer prices. Looking to eat in Bethesda, Tyson's Corner, maybe Alexandria. The one catch, one of the people going is an extremely picky eater, so the place can't really be to weird for her. Asian, Indian, etc. are definitly out for her.

The Going Out Gurus: What about Seven on Route 7 at Tysons, though I'm not sure about the beer prices. Or Carlyle Grand off 395 in Shirlington, perhaps. Actually, that's quite a good idea because you could have a drink beforhand at Cap City Brewery across the street. Do you like that idea? -- Alexa

Please suggest a place for me: Between 35 and 45; newly single; likes dance places with quiet areas to talk; likes fancy non-alcholic drinks and reasonably healthful bar food.

The Going Out Gurus: What kind of dancing? Ortanique makes some fabulous non-alcoholic drinks, and the salsa events on Fridays attracts an older-than-25 crowd. The lounge upstairs is good for conversation. -- Fritz

Rockville: What's the Yacht Club really like? Is it a bunch of men over 50 and women over 40, both thinking the other is too old?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. But we have mad love for Tommy the Matchmaker.

Eastern Market, Washington, DC: How many stalls are up on Saturdays? I know the market lunch is open then, but what about the farmers market part, etc? Thanks.
ps any feedback on the Sunday section? I dig it.

The Going Out Gurus: The farmers market sellers are at Eastern Market on Saturdays, too. You must go, not least to see the amazing tomatoes featured two weeks ago. They were from North Carolina. A bite of that was like time travel -- as perfect as if you'd picked it from your garden in late August. Speaking of the Sunday Source, the tomatoes were there the same week as the Gatherings story featuring farmers market produce. Thanks for your feedback on the section -- we'll pass it along. -- Anne

Washington, DC: We had a prom at my high school in Canada...it was sweet, open bar and a booze cruise afterwards...

The Going Out Gurus: We had a "leaver's dance" at a community hall. Everybody's family came too. But yes, it was open bar.

Washington, DC: Bossa is having a special event tonight, a fundraiser to support Burmese women's groups.

They're starting the World Grooves night at 8pm tonight, Thursday, to hold a fundraiser party for the Women's League of Burma - groups working to help women's organizations in Burma.

You can win prizes in a raffle, see a Burmese dance performance, and hear some good (imho) music. Suggested donation: $10 (larger and smaller donations are welcome).

The Going Out Gurus: Plug plug.

Courthouse, Va: wedding registry question here.

i have a 6qt ($230.00) all clad pan on our registry, the misses says we should take it off and let someone use the money toward something more usefull.

i say we will have kids to feed and dinner guests in the future to feed and we need this pan. how can i make latkas with out a large pan? i ask you that. its all about my latkas!

i throw it out to y'all. keep it on the registry or take it off?

The Going Out Gurus: You'll never use it Courthouse. Take it off this instant!

National Zoo neighborhood, DC: Hey Gurus! I'm hosting an event at the National Zoo in July, and would like to have an "after-party" destination for the guests. Do you have any suggestions for a venue in walking distance in the CP/WP area for group of 50-75 people?

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm. That's an awfully large group, but you can try Aroma's back room lounge, or, if the weather's nice, the roof at Brick's.

Arlington, VA: What is the best singles scene in the D.C. Metro area? Best for me would be where ratio woman to men is bigger. Since I'm a guy. Seems like all the clubs and bars I go to are packed with guys.

The Going Out Gurus: Stay tuned, Arlington -- we'll have a list of "Ladies Nights" up next week.

The Going Out Gurus: OK everyone, we are so done. Thanks so much for the great questions and suggestions. We'll do it all again next week. And please, at least one or two nacho recommendations next time around.
