Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, April 10, 2003; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

The discussion ended at 2:15. The transcript follows.

The Going Out Gurus: We're back! And we're almost in alphabetical order. Alexa, Anne, Fritz, Joe, Maura, Rhome and me, Kate are at the ready to trade tips. This week we've got the details on the new silver screens in Silver Spring, close-ups of Mount Vernon and the way to score time with the Common, man on Friday -- and Captain 20 on Saturday. We know ways to save and how to spend it. Saturday's forecast is for sunny and 60's, perhaps it's time for a picnic. What say you?

The Going Out Gurus: I was remiss: please file Guru Jen between Fritz and Joe. She's here too. -- Kate

22314: Again, how old are you guys?

The Going Out Gurus: Let's see. A couple of us are in our 20s. The rest of us are in our 30s. A few of us act like teenagers. A couple of us are babies. And at least one of us is a cranky old man. - Joe

Tick tick bust: Any word on why they have cancelled those shows? I had tickets for the Sunday show and now it's not running anymore?

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) also had tickets so I was bummed, too. You should have received a letter in the mail explaining that the shows were cancelled because of poor ticket sales and concerns that the production wouldn't be able to advertise effectively because of the war. Personally, I'm curious to know whether some of the cast and crew members were also concerned about being in Washington because of potential safety issues. I hope that's not the case, but I wonder if that, coupled with the slow sales, didn't seal the deal. In any case, maybe the show will try to come back at some point, perhaps to a smaller venue.

Reston, VA: THE INLAWS ARE COMMING! THE INLAWS ARE COMMING! We'll be around the Mall on Saturday. They've been here once before and have seen the standard stuff. Any new exhibits or sites we should make sure to bring them too?

The Going Out Gurus: Reston, I'll pass along the same advice I gave a best friend this morning: Vuillard and Kirchner at the National Gallery. In addition, Auto Focus at the Sackler is sure to please. If they're less into art, have they checked out Julia Child's kitchen yet? And don't forget to follow that up with a little dining off the Mall. Have fun. -- Maura

Silver Spring, MD: Help me please GOGs! I am looking for a great Sunday brunch place for about 6 young women to celebrate a birthday and have a great meal-- and maybe some mimosas too! Somewhere veggie friendly and in Bethesda/Silver Spring area or DC would be best...

The Going Out Gurus: I suggest you girls go somehere live Levante's (Middle eastern food is always great for vegetarians AND they have a mimosa brunch) or perhaps Thyme Square. Jaleo, too, would be nice. All are in Bethesda. -- Alexa

Cap Hill : Will Rhome go out on a blind date with me? I have a major crush on him...

The Going Out Gurus: I thought I was a woman? Y'all need to make up your minds.

Washington, DC: Hey Gurus, love your advice. I have a question about The Cellar Nightclub, which is advertised on shotglass.com as having a $7 open bar happy hour on Fridays. I couldn't find any reviews of the place on the Post or elsewhere, and was wondering if any of you have been there and what you thought of it. If not, then are there any other "open bar" type happy hours on Friday that you could recommend? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, the wonders of the Internet. Judging by the list of bars on that site, I'm guessing it hasn't been updated in three or four years. The Cellar, George Toon's, Sports Fans, One Step Down, the Ha'Penny Lion -- all long gone. Maybe someone built the site and then just forgot about it? Anyway, don't waste your time on it. (For what it's worth, the Cellar was an underground dance club that was famous for attracting young college students and old men on the prowl.)

Anyway, open bar happy hours. I'd say the best around is the $15 premium open bar at MCCXXIII. It's a great way to start the night -- just make sure you don't accidently end it too soon. -- Fritz

Arlington, Va.: I may be jumping the gun just a little, but is there any word if we'll be seeing Screen on the Green in D.C. again this year? Can't find anything on the Web, and their old phone number is no longer in service.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington. We don't mind your gun-jumping. As far as we know Screen on the Green will happen again this year. We haven't gotten any info on it yet, but we haven't heard that it won't happen. So we have no reason to think otherwise. As soon as we know something, you'll know, too. -- Jen

Arlington, VA: Some friends and I looking forward to spring (whenever it decides to come back)and have been discussing renting row boats/canoes/inner tubes. I know Thompson's boat house rented canoes, do they still? (One friend suggested they might not because of security around bridges?) Any idea when/if they're open for the season yet? Any other ideas? Doesn't have to be the Potomac, we wouldn't mind a day trip to a nearby lake or river...

The Going Out Gurus: Not security, just that it's still too darn cold yet.
Thompson's Boathouse will rent you canoes and kayaks starting at $8/hour, but they have to wait until the water temp is a balmy 55 degrees. The folks at Fletcher's, however, have their fingers crossed that they can rent canoes for the canal this weekend. They're waiting to hear word from the Park Service. Best we can suggest is to call before you go. -- Anne

DC: Friends in town for the weekend. What is the deal with Local 16 and VIDA lounge? I've heard mixed reviews. Want something new. Thanks- you guys never lead me astray.

The Going Out Gurus: Okay, DC. Local 16 is an attractive, upscale spot with a great rooftop deck, chilled lounge beats (think Thievery Corporation; the bar is owned by the Eighteenth Street Lounge folks) and a packed bar. I like it, but it can be expensive and sometimes have a bit of attitude. Vide gives me mixed feelings; I like the large patio and the tequila selection, but the "lounge nights" upstairs have been kind of iffy. Don't know where you've been lately, but you might want to try the new Mantis lounge in Adams Morgan, Gazuza (okay, it's not new) or the Helix Lounge. -- Fritz

Adams Morgan: What do you know about the new L'Enfant Cafe at 18th and Florida? It looks interesting..

The Going Out Gurus: We don't know much at the mo -- just that it appears to be a brasserie of some kind. Anyone got any news?

Courthouse: Hey Gurus!I need your help with some planning. Due to my fabulous NCAA bracket-picking skills, my boyfriend owes me a date of my choice. I was thinking of trying to see a cool exhibit and then having him buy me lunch. The problem is that I am a "let's browse around the National Gallery" type of gal and he's more of an "Imax movie at the Air and Space museum" guy. Anything coming up that we both might like? We're planning on doing this next weekend most likely. Of course, if other fun stuff is going on, I'm open to any of your suggestions. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Courthouse, congrats on those brackets. I say check out the Gerhard Richter survey at the Hirshhorn. Provocative stuff to be sure, the show caused quite a stir at stops in New York and Chicago. Just next door -- at Air and Space -- you have your pick of these IMAX flicks. -- Maura

Washington DC: Will Alexa or Anne or Jen or Maura or Kate go out on a blind date with me? I have a major crush on her...

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. No. Yes. Yes. And No.

Georgetown: We're ready to hit the Georgetown waterfront (once it warms). But are the outdoor sections open yet?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Georgetown. I slaved away to update my various rooftop-and-patio guides last week, only to be rewarded with sleet and cold this week. But the consensus I got from various bar managers/owners last week -- including Riverside Grill -- was that most outdoor areas would be open on a case-by-case basis. If the weather's nice, call first. -- Fritz

Uptown: Let's talk about the Reef, Fritz. I know it's your favorite and I think it's pretty cool for the most part, but what's up with the food? The selection is pretty limited and it doesn't get updated (other than accents) very often. Given that I tend to be a creature of habit and order the same darn thing each time I go there - buffalo hangar steak - I'm ok with that but my friends are refusing to return for a meal until the Reef freshens up that menu!

The Going Out Gurus: I like it, but I wouldn't say it's my absolute favorite bar in the world ... anyway, yes, the menu is limited, and they've been promising to have more specials and such. I haven't seen them (and I also love hanger steak). You could always just grab your food elsewhere in the neighborhood and head to the Reef for drinks. -- Fritz

Adam's Morgan: Was wondering what sort of acid jazz/chill techno would go well with a Mojito and Martini party, oh wise ones. I am still uneducated and would love some imput for some good mood music.

The Going Out Gurus: Tower records and CD Warehouse have a lot of good electronic music compilations. That's better than taking a chance on an individual artist you might not know because you get to sample a bunch of different flavors. You can also ask the hipster clerks at a spot like Yoshitoshi. A few labels to look for... Naked Music, Om Records, Hollow Recordings, Chili Funk, Giant Step. A few names to look for... anything with Gilles Peterson. Anything associated with Thievery Corporation (Thunderball, Desmond Williams, etc.), Les Hommes, Zuco 103, Nuspirit Helsinki, 4 Hero, New Sector Movements, Bugz In the Attic, Shaun Escoffery. Knock yourself out! - Rhome

H&M: What is the official word on the h&m opening in tysons? The post website says it's already open, but i didn't think that was true. thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: The word according to shopping guru Janet is that the Tyson's H&M is now open. The consensus from these gurus: Don't get too excited. Sorry. -- Maura

Cheap and quick - enroute to Kennedy Center: Any suggestion for a cheap and quick meal/snack enroute to Ken Center via the red line metro? Curtain at 8pm.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Why not eat AT the Kennedy Center's extremely pleasant cafeteria? We rave about it. Elegant snacks, a glass of wine, and all in situ. So handy. Let me know if tha-- Alexa

Question about the chop house: Any recomendations there? Do you know if the chicken fingers are battered or breaded. if they are breaded, thats an automatic disqualification from my book on chicken fingers. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: I had a great steak there not long ago. But skip the calamari. No taste and the sauce they serve with it is also bland. Can't help you with info on the chicken fingers.

Arlington, VA: I'm submitting early because I've got a meeting at one. And this is more of a comment than a question. Rhome, are you the Rhome that was spinning at Rendezvous last night? Just wanted to say we thought you were great, and we appreciate the CD's. Thanks, and we'll definitely be back with friends.

The Going Out Gurus: Yup, that's me. And no, I didn't ask my mom to plant this question in the chat.

Washington, DC: Where's a great, laid-back place with an intimate outdoor patio (not street-side) for evening drinks? I'm hoping for mojitos, margaritas and other summery-type fare in NW, DC. Many thanks! Woodley Parker

The Going Out Gurus: Good question, Washington. I've been looking for great off-street patios in Washington, and they're fairly hard to come by. The rooftops at Wazuri and the Reef might fit your needs -- both make excellent tropical drinks, although the Reef might not do Mojitos -- or, if you must, Lauriol Plaza. On the Georgetown waterfront, there's always Sequoia -- I'd go there for a mixed drink before Riverside or Tony and Joe's. It might be worth your time to take the Red line to Brookland and visit Island Jim's, one of my favorite outdoor spots in the area.

Anyone else have suggestions? -- Fritz

Smithsonian lines: What is the deal with the museums around town and their inability to process people to enter. This past weekend there was a huge line coming out of the American History Museum. Granted it was cherry blossom season, but it's going to be 10 times worse this summer. Does the Smithsonian have any plans to improve their ability to get people in to the museums more quickly this summer than they are currently?

The Going Out Gurus: I feel your pain. I wait in those lines too. At the National Gallery they have stepped up security checks since the most recent code orange and I assume the Smithsonian is doing the same. This, of course, means longer lines. My guess is they'll improve by summer, but there will be lines. Don't forget there are often two entrances. Avoid the Mall side and I bet you'll avoid most of the crowds. Good luck. -- Maura

Downtown: My dad and stepmom are coming down this weekend to hopefully catch some cherry blossoms. Are they still on the trees down by the Tidal Basin? If not, is there any other part of D.C. where they can be seen? Dumbarton Oaks, perhaps?

The Going Out Gurus: Your best bet for cherry blossoms this weekend is Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, because most of the other celebrated cherry trees around town flowered last week and have since had their petals rained or blown away. If could happen again -- it's all a game of chance with Mother Nature, you know. If you don't see the fabled cherry blossoms, don't fret. Going somewhere new and absorbing the bright-colored flowers sprouting up everywhere will have the same comforting effect -- winter does end. Try some of these gardens, for starters. -- Anne

Springfield, Va.: Can you recommend an inexpensive and quiet place to eat (no fast food) in Northern Virginia?

The Going Out Gurus: What type of food? Your question is so broad. Can you noarrow it a little?

Washington, DC: I've recently moved here, and I'm looking to celebrate a birthday next weekend with a night on the town. Can you suggest a dance club that specializes in drum'n'bass or IDM?

The Going Out Gurus: I heart the search engine. - Rhome

Georgetown, DC: I read the thingy about the silver theater on the site, but i'm still confused about what exactly is happening this weekend. The open house on Saturday and Sunday consists of just the movie screenings also scheduled for tomorrow night? Or is there more? Thanks!!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Georgetown. The deal this weekend is that regular screenings begin tomorrow. You should be able to find all of those movie times on our site here. The open houses are something different: these last from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and allow people to tour the theater, watch some short films and possibly hear some live music. The open houses are free, and I believe the tours start on the hour. Go if you can. The theater is really gorgeous and a great place to see movies. I managed to catch the "Mighty Wind" premiere there last night, and it was fantastic. -- Jen

WDC2triple01: Also: My brother was lamenting the fact that there aren't many (or any) restaurants now that require a jacket (and tie) to be seated. Do you know of any and/or could you list them?

The Going Out Gurus: Is your brother 85 years old? Alexa says the Old Anglers Inn might require a coat and tie. Also, The Prime Rib, 1789, Citronelle. I'm sure there are a few others. - Joe

WDC again: Do you have any idea why The Improv tends to get only mediocre or unknown talent? I have seen some greats there, but the best shows I ever saw were back in 94-95. Is this because I no longer watch Comedy Central and don't recognize the performers in the paper or has it changed?

The Going Out Gurus: I agree with you to a point WDC. I have no interest in comic hypotists but Flip packs them in. The good news is this: the Improv does has some gems ahead. Three of my favorites: Wanda Sykes, Dave Attell and Darrell Hammond are returning to the club in the next six weeks. I highly recommend all three, but if you can only catch one, make it Mr. H. I caught his act the last time he was around and it was honestly some of the best theater I've seen all year. He was wearing a sports jacket with sweat pants and he was mainlining Diet Cokes and for a split second I wondered what I had paid for. But then he let rip on Washington politics. His catalogue of anecdotes and impressions was Homeric ( as in "Iliad" not the "Springfield" of above). -- Kate

14th and H: Hi GoGs,I'm wondering about girls' soccer. I haven't played since I was six, really. But I want to get into it. I loved watching the World Cup this past summer and I want to get some firsthand action. Do you know of any pickup leagues for absolute novices? I think I would generally prefer all female because yes, I would be intimidated by guys, but let me know what you got. Thanks for your help!

The Going Out Gurus: I'm in the same camp as you, 14th and H. Check out this group, the Washington Area Women's Soccer League. They have a level for women who have played as young kids or are starting for the first time. -- Anne

Alex, VA: Anyone know if Kingfish in Old Town is defintly gone or if something will be taking its place? And if gone, why don't they put a sign in the window (my own personal rant).

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, it appears to be all papered up and there have been no signs of work going on. Yes, you are right. A little note to explain might have been nice. -- Alexa

The Going Out Gurus: By the way -- general announcement. This is Fritz, and I'm currently working on updating the annual Intern's Guide to Washington. This year, I'm writing a piece about nightlife on the cheap, and I'm interested in talking to folks who live on free happy hour food, scout out bars for low-price drinks, or find ways to enjoy the social scene -- movies and music as well as bars and clubs -- without spending too much money. You don't have to be an intern, either; anyone is welcome to submit their thoughts and ideas. Send a message (with your contact info) to fritz.hahn@washingtonpost.com and I'll be in touch. Thanks.

Washington DC: I'm going to spend about 24 hours in NYC this weekend. Do you have suggestions for must sees/must dos? I'm a single female 26yrs old traveling by myself. And I hate shopping. But an open minded and adventerous about everthing else.

The Going Out Gurus: Lucky you, Washington. Kate passed me this question as I was just singing the praises of the world's best breakfast today -- Kitchenette. Pull up a stool at the Tribeca location or check out their spot on the Upper West Side. Just a few weeks ago I was entranced by the Diller+Scofidio show at the Whitney. If you're feeling really adventurous, check out MoSex, otherwise known as the Museum of Sex, on 5th Ave and 27th. It's a serious museum not just X-rated. Well, maybe a little X-rated. Enjoy the day. -- Maura

Washington, DC: Any of you GOGS have mortgages? How can you afford to go out all the time?

The Going Out Gurus: They don't tend to give mortgages to teens. -- Alexa

College Park, MD: Gurus,

Just a report back--Richard III was BRILLIANT, possibly the best Shakespeare I've seen (and I've seen quite a bit), and your pre-theatre suggestion was great--Cafe Atlantico had a $22 prix-fixe that included shrimp, 1/2 a lobster, and molten chocolate cake! That, preceeded by the cherry blossoms made for the perfect DC Day.

The Going Out Gurus: This is what we like to hear: satisfied customers. Glad you had an enjoyable time.

Re H&M: It's not open yet. I went with a friend last week (as per the H&M website) and it wasn't open. We called the mall and they said May 2.
Sigh. We were bitterly disappointed.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks. I know Dulles Town Center is open, if that helps any. And an early warning: you might be more disappointed once you're actually in the store.

WDC: Hello there,

I have been reading these chats for a while now, and one of the things I keep noticing is how people allow other people to make them feel uncomfortable in bars/restaurants. You always hear about how Euro, Frat, Chic, Trendy, Bohemian, Pierced, etc.,. are not normal or regular. I am a pretty conservative person (at least in appearance) and I have as much fun going to places like Black Cat or The Fox as I do going to Topaz or Mie n Yu. The crowds are definitely different, but I always manage to meet nice people and it is always unexpected. I guess what I have learned is that it is important to embrace all types even if they are not like you. Even though you may not dress or look like that person chances are you might have a lot more in common than you think. That is how I at least see it and how I enjoy the interesting bar scene here in DC. There is variety here, you just have to seek it.

The Going Out Gurus: You make an excellent point, WDC. Even if it wasn't my job, I love trying new places, whether they're punk, Euro, African-American, Latin rock -- and I don't worry about the "What are you doing here?" looks. I just enjoy myself, and usually wind up meeting and talking to someone new. I do wish people would get out of the "I can't go there, I'm not [blank] enough" mindset. Just try it once.

Let's hear about other people's experiences. -- Fritz

Arlington, VA: Are there any cute single guys in your office that would want to go on a blind date sometime?

The Going Out Gurus: Single, yes. Cute, well that's asking a lot.

Local 16: I love the place. Consistently good food and a nice neighborhood spot for those of us on U St. Never ran into the attitude problem. My only complaint is that the mixed crowd means that I occasionally end up wiggling my eyebrows at str8 men...

The Going Out Gurus: We love that you love it.

McLean, VA: Hey Fritz-

Here's a question that you might be able to answer....

I was driving by that famous Arlington landmark, Whitey's Restaurant, last week and saw that it was closed (with a note in the window from the owners thanking everyone for 25-some years).
Do you know what's up with that. Is that old commercial strip slated for demolition for pricey housing?

Any chance someone will buy the place and keep the famous neighborhood joint operating?

The Going Out Gurus: I think we talked about this last week -- Whitey's closed because the owner was having some tax problems. I heard it was going up for auction soon if there's no new buyer. I hope someone buys it and keeps the joint open, but I'm not holding my breath. -- Fritz

Dupont Circle: When does "A Mighty Wind" open in DC? Christopher Guest and the rest of them are sheer genius! Have any of you seen it yet?

The Going Out Gurus: It opens Wednesday, Dupont. And I (Jen) saw it last night. It was very funny -- perhaps not as hysterical as "Best in Show" or "Waiting for Guffman," which is still my favorite of the Christopher Guest films, but definitely has some great lines and moments that will make you laugh out loud. Once again, Fred Willard manages to steal the show with just a few short scenes.
Guest, Michael McKean and Eugene Levy also did a Q&A with Murray Horwitz, the director of the Silver Theatre, before the movie. They were funny in person, too, though it seemed, at least on the surface, that Guest wasn't in the best of moods.

Free Juggling Show!: Hi,
I just wanted to make everyone here aware of a large juggling event going on this weekend at the University of MD, College Park. Hundreds of jugglers will be getting together to hang out and juggle, and some of the professionals will be putting on a public show Saturday night at 7pm in Tawes Theater. Everything (including the show) is free!

More info here:
http://www.inform.umd.edu/studentorgs/juggling/congress.htm

The Going Out Gurus: Like "free," "juggling" and "show" aren't the three little words we've been longing to hear.

Capitol Hill: My family (Mum, sister, 5 year old niece) are in town. Trying to think of a place to take them for dinner that'll make them think I'm more sophistimicated than I really am but that will be also be ok to take the kidlet. D.C. or Arlington/Alexandria area. Ideas? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: What about Pizzeria Paradiso, or 2 Amys? Both are pizza, both excellent, both casual for a youngster. And pretty reasonable. -- Alexa

Washington D.C.: Quick question for Fritz, you're always going on about some beer or brand of vodka that most of us have never heard of. How many would you say you have tried in the last month?

The Going Out Gurus: This answer is skewed, because I sampled at least 50 beers last month at the London Drinker Real Ale Festival, and at least dozen more on various brewery tours, not to mention every new beer I came across in a backstreet pub. Let's say "too many" and leave it at that.

But I encourage everyone to get out and sample the vast selections at R.F.D. (30-40 draft beers), Maxim (close to 100 vodkas), Ortanique (30+ rums) and the Royal Mile Pub (dozens of single-malt Scotches). -- Fritz

Formerly Yuma, AZ: Ok, I just moved here.

Where can I find some the alledged single women who supposedly populate this city. (Principally those 33-38, college degree and no kids.)

The Going Out Gurus: Do you want to meet single women? Or alleged single women? In other words, do you want a relationship or an affair. Can the women out there who fit this category help Yuma out.

Dupont: Have any of you heard anything about the play Penetrator at The Source Theater?

The Going Out Gurus: That's the latest Cherry Red production, which means it will likely be raunchy and, potentially, very funny. I haven't seen it and it hasn't been reviewed in the paper yet, but keep your eyes open. -- Jen

Easter: I know Easter is Next weekend but my parents are coming to visit for Easter and I'm trying to figure out what to do w/ them. Any special Easter type activites going on geared to adults?
Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Here's what we suggest, E. Visit Frying Pan Park (703-437-9101), where you can purchase eggs laid by the hens that day and pet baby animals on the farm. They're even cuter than those stickers my Sunday school teachers handed out. Kate reports that piglets are due any day.
If you're looking for more reverence (and don't mind a very early morning), you can see several DC landmarks at a quieter time and in a different light. Many hold an outdoor sunrise service on Easter Sunday. Arlington National Cemetery, for example, starts at 6:15 a.m. -- Anne

About the GOGs: What celebrity do y'all look like, and i'm serious, no haha joke answers like Fritz looks like Larry King and Kate looks like Dame Edna and Rhome is a spiting image of RuPaul.

The Going Out Gurus: Oh my god, you must be a stalker. You've described these three exactly. - Joe

Washington, DC: Did anyone see the Reduced Shakespeare Company show last year ? They will be at the Kennedy Center in June and I was wondering if it was as funny as it sounds ? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) missed it, but I'm sure others caught it. Anyone care to share? (For the record, I hear they're very good.)

DC: Have any of you guys gone to check out the musical offerings at the various Ethiopian joints on U street, 14th and 18th? What's the story? I'm particularly interested in Dukem (their food is the best!).

The Going Out Gurus: Do you mean Ethiopian music in particular or just any DJ or band activities going on in these spots? I've never experienced the former but as for the latter, stuff only sticks around as long as it makes the owners money, ie Hip-hop parties at Fasika's. I think U-Turn is owned by Ethiopians but I don't think they serve Ethiopian food there. They have punk and hip-hop shows there. (BWT, Kaffa House R.I.P.) Twins is owned by a set of Ethiopian sisters, you can get jazz and grub there. Why don't you head in to some of these spots and report back? I resolve to do the same, been meaning to try Dukem for awhile. - Rhome

Crystal City: Hi guru's! My father is visiting me next weekend and we have lots of things on our list to do. I was hoping you could answer some questions to help make his visit a fun-filled one. First, do you know when the National Archives is scheduled to re-open this year? We would like to go next weekend, but I was unable to find out if it is open yet. Second, we'll be going to visit the Hillwood Museum next Friday afternoon. can you recommend a nice spot to have lunch near the musuem? american or italian food is prefered. And last, my friends and I want to take our parents out to a nice place for easter brunch. We'll probably have up to 10 people in our party. Do you have any recommendations, either in the city or in Arlington? Thanks for all your help - you guys rock!

The Going Out Gurus: Crystal City, the National Archives is still scheduled to reopen later this year. No exact date just yet -- so I think that means no time soon. It is a great time of year to see Hillwood and its gardens though. Follow up that visit with lunch at Two Amy's or Cafe Deluxe just up the road by the Cathedral. As for brunch, Alexa's roundup may be a good spot to start.

Washington, D.C.: Is the guy from Yuma coming from the state prison or the Marine base?

The Going Out Gurus: We'll have to check.

Washington, DC: Has anyone on the chat ever participated in or organized a pub crawl to benefit a charity. If so, how was the experience? I'm thinking of organizing one and couldn't think of any other forum where I could ask this question. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. I've been on a number, but never organized an official crawl. What I would do is get a letter from the charity saying that you want to do something on their behalf, and take it around to a few bars and ask them to donate proceeds from sales of a certain beer or allow you to charge cover from 3 to 8 on a Saturday or something like that. It helps if it's a well-known charity, too -- something bar owners might have heard of.

I'd also suggest you talk to Andy Miscuk, who runs the excellent Cocktail Charities event. He's at Cocktail@CocktailCharities.org. Anyone else have experience crawling for charity? -- Fritz

re: Yuma: Go to the Yacht Club.

The Going Out Gurus: There you go Yuma. A great idea.

AU Park: So I am an H&M fan--stop in most trips to NYC. What's wrong with the one in Tysons? Just curious.

The Going Out Gurus: Haven't been to the one in Tysons. Our consensus here -- all right that's Fritz, Kate and Maura -- is that H&M has gone down hill. According to Alexa, it didn't have far to go. If you're looking for a bargain, I'd get more excited about the new Loehmann's. But check out H&M and let us know what you think, shoppers.

Reduced Shakes (no, not a new epilepsy medicine): I've seen the Reduced Shakespeare Company twice, and can attest they're fantastic, and make the show feel fresh every time. Prepare for some audience participation!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the feedback. That's one positive review so far.

Metro Center: Is Rhome the cranky old man?

The Going Out Gurus: Rhome is indeed cranky. And he's a hip-hop snob to boot. Though if you ask him, he'll deny it. - Joe

Reduced Shakespeare: I saw it maybe two summers ago and loved it!!

The Going Out Gurus: Make that two...

under a palm tree in falls church: Dear "This is Fritz," gald to hear you are back. While you were quilting with the Amish, your fellow guru's made bold claims for your knowledge. Could you help with this questions from a few weeks back?

Falls Church, Va.: My Beloved Gurus

Several of us were in the study of a recently found artifact; a tiki mug from The Aloha Hut, apparently in Washngton, D.C. Do you or any of the clicksters know when or where the Aloha Hut was?

The Going Out Gurus: The Aloha Hut question is one Fritz could do in his sleep. For now we'll just toss it out to you all. - Rhome

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Falls Church.

First, I was NOT with the Amish. (What is this, the Timex Social Club?)

Now, the Aloha Hut mug: I've seen local tiki mugs before -- I own a vintage mug from Silver Spring's long-lost Luau Hut -- but all I've ever heard of the Aloha Hut was that it was in Northwest Washington. No one I've talked to has been able to give me more info than that, although I did see an Aloha Hut glass in a shop recently. I suppose I should have snatched it up.

Anyone out there ever go to/hear of Washington's Aloha Hut? -- Fritz

Yo, Yuma: Some of us educated, 30s single women w/o kids hang out at Politics & Prose on Connecticut Ave. (and there are never enough single men of that demographic hanging out there...)

The Going Out Gurus: Yuma, this is your lucky day. The responses are pouring in. Now it's up to you.

Fairfax, VA: Nooooo! I hope it's not too late! I have to make reservations for a birthday dinner (my birthday, how lame I have to make my own reservations! :P) for a Saturday night. Four adults and two young adults (11 & 13). The kids are pretty good but don't have the best ever restaurant manners just yet.. So where should I go? I've already been to many of the nicer places but I am up for going back if they are kid friendly. Some ideas I'm putting around - Places I've never been to:1789, Little Fountain Cafe, Tosca, Corduroy. Additional suggestions or pick from above?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm not sure I'd go to any of those places. Don't you need somewhere a little less stuffy? Pizzeria Paradiso, Jaleo, Cafe Deluxe? -- Alexa

The Going Out Gurus: Beck alert: In case any of you are Beck fans, tickets go on sale Saturday at noon from Tickets.com for his May 28 show at Wolf Trap's Filene Center (no, that's not a misprint. Beck is playing Wolf Trap. Should be interesting.)

Arlington, VA: hi GoGs - My boyfriend's mom and my parents will both be in town next weekend - first meeting. Can you suggest a nice, casual, not too loud, reasonably priced place for dinner on Friday night? Something American-ish would be best. We'll either be near the mall or in the Ballston area, although we're pretty flexible as far as location.
thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I suppose you could go to Flat Top Grill. Actually that might be a very good place for you to go, because the fact that you basically "make" your own dinner could be a good buffer against awkwardness. I tend to think it's a bit of a gimmick, but gimmick -- in this case -- might be a good thing. It's right in Ballston. -- Alexa

Downtown DC: I have a question for the gurus and chatters today.
I am in charge of planning a 'cultural' alumni event this summer/fall and would love to have an embassy night. There are so many in DC, do you have any recommendations as to which are the "best" to visit and are most interesting and accomodating for a group of around 50? Thanks!!

The Going Out Gurus: My favorite hands down is the Finnish Embassy on Mass Avenue. Not sure who to contact there, but here is a start. -- Maura

Uptown: I used to work across the street from NYC's flagship H&M. At first I too did not get the fuss. There would be lines around the block just to get in. However there's definitely some value there. H&M focuses on producing the latest trends on the cheap so if last season, say, you really wanted a newsboy cap or t-shirts that looked like they came from a fire house in Montana, you could find it there and for little money. But the clothes most definitely throwaways. You'll wear the stuff three, maybe four times, and be done with it. Quality suffers to meet price points.

The Going Out Gurus: A more complete answer. Thanks, Uptown.

Fairfax VA: I have a date with an Ecuadorian beauty tonight, and what thinking about checking out Cecilia’s in Arlington, what is the scene/atmosphere there like...

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Fairfax: Some of the salsa dancers/instructors I talk to have been down on Cecilia's. I'd suggest you take her over to Ooh La La (18th and M) and dance to Orquestra La Romana, one of my favorite groups in the area. The dance goes from 9 until 2. Admission is $5 before 10, and $10 after. -- Fritz

The Going Out Gurus: A few odds and ends I forgot: Harambee has had live music, most recently an open mike on Wednesday nights. It's Eritrean though, not Ethiopian. Luau Hut OWNS! At least it once did, according to my hazy kiddie memories. If you were standing outside 1223 last night until 3am straining your neck for a glimpse of P. Diddy, you need serious help. - Rhome

Dating: Along these lines of queries regarding your availability for dates, etc.. is that why you don't have a picture up of yourselves? I think if you had one up it would increase these comments 10fold...it even happens on the travel chat. I like the facelss advice, meself.

The Going Out Gurus: Hmm, I think if we had pictures up, the comments would actually decrease 10 fold. We promise to keep it faceless. - Joe

to YO, YUMA: I'd just break your heart. Y

The Going Out Gurus: She's a heartbreaker, Yuma.

Duck, NC: What's the Mantis lounge? Never heard of it. Is it new?

The Going Out Gurus: Yep. It replaced the Pasta Inn on Columbia Road. Low-slung lounge furniture, Euro-minimalist decor, Asian "tapas." It's very sleek, but leaves me a bit cold. -- Fritz

Wash DC: So, what do you guys think is going to be the new summer 2003 trends (place, activity, event, food, drink, etc) for going out? I need to plan my summer.

The Going Out Gurus: Oh, we'll answer all those in more in our Summer Guide, coming soon, WDC. In the meantime, seems our chatters have ideas for their favorite outdoor patios.

re: birthday dinner: Bistrot du Coin is fun and it's always noisy, so nobody will probably be scandalized by preteens.

The Going Out Gurus: As long as you're there for dinner, it's fine.

Say it ain't so!: The Post is reporting the closure of Isle's Go-Go Bar & Lounge in Northeast. Where's a brother to go, now that Isle's is on its way out and Stardust seems to be having some, um, security issues of late??

The Going Out Gurus: I don't know. I just don't know. They'll be going after Club 55 next ...

Fairfax, VA: Is Joe of the Gurus, Joe Heim who covers music?
If yes, I want to say Hi because I may be a distant cousin (same last name). Our pathes keep crossing as I have recently read his reviews of SXSW and Jayhawks and figured there must be a music gene in the HEIM family.

The Going Out Gurus: That's me. And coming from a good Catholic family, I have about a 1000 cousins, so maybe we are related.

Woodley Park, DC: What is wrong with people?

Last night I went to Saint Ex. They've been open maybe 2 months now and half of the stickers on the bathroom wall have been torn off. What possesses people to be so inconsiderate?

Frankly it makes me understand the decor of Crush or Heaven and Hell. Why should bars bother with decor if their patrons have so little respect for it? Can't people function properly in public?

The Going Out Gurus: Um, they're idiots who were raised in a barn or by wolves? That's the only excuse I can think of. It's a shame that bar owners try to create a great atmosphere, and people just trash it. -- Fritz

Washington DC: Yuma should make sure that he can spell before he approaches any of these educated women.

The Going Out Gurus: Well, only if he approaches them by email.

re: yuma and tyson's: i am sure other district folks feel the same way - the new store in Tyson's is bad because it is in Northern Virginia. Yuma, for girls, stay in the district. blue room / topaz are good. also, va and md drivers, don't drive in front of me while i am crossing the street. however, those with a dc license plate are permitted to do so.

The Going Out Gurus: We're mad for Yuma.

re: Yuma: Nathan's in Georgetown Friday, Saturday nights

The Going Out Gurus: Yuuuuuma! Yuuuummmmmmmaaaaa!

Vietnamese Sandwiches: Do you know where I can find Banh Mi, those delicious Vietnamese sandwiches?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes I do. Huong Que/Four Sisters in the Eden Center should set you up for the day. -- Kate

Germantown, MD: I know that I don't go to clubs where I'm the "norm" (I'm an African-American female that loves rock and alternative) and the looks I get sometimes are a bit withering...It can be hard to take when all I want to do is listen to the type of music I like. Oh, and add to that having a Caucasian boyfriend...It can be pretty tough going to predominately black venues as well...

The Going Out Gurus: You gotta do you, Germantown. Roll with true friends and shake those haters off. - Rhome

MCI HH?: I just got a new job a few blocks south of the MCI Center. What are top happy hour deals around those blocks? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Well, the $2.50 microbrews at the District Chophouse top my list. Angelo and Maxie's mixes top-shelf martinis for $5 'til 7. For something more low-key, MVP's sports bar has $2 drafts and $2.75 mixed drinks. Fado also has nightly specials. -- Fritz

Outdoor Drinks: There are plenty of places for outdoor drinks -- just depends on what kind of vibe you want. In Cleveland Park - Firehook Cafe (beleive it or not) has a fab outdoor patio (thanks to the old Roma)and they serve beer and wine. Also, right next door - I haven't been to Brick's Tavern yet - but I know Coppi's used to have a great roofdeck. There's always the standbys in Adams Morgan, Perry's and Roxanne. And even Busara in Glover Park has a great outdoor deck. I'll keep thinking, I know there are a bunch in the city.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks OD.

Parents swooping in this weekend!: Hi Gurus... Two questions that I'd really appreciate your help with-- First, does anyone know whether the International Spy Museum has calmed down somewhat? I'd like to visit this Saturday, but would reconsider if I knew that it was still too jammed to see anything. Second, I was considering taking my parents to see Nicholas Payton at Twins Jazz on Saturday night, but know nothing about it. What is the scene/place like? How early should we get there to get seats (are there seats?)? Thanks so much for helping a girl out!

The Going Out Gurus: The Spy Museum is as crowded as ever, particularly on weekends. Call if you can today and get advance passes. There's a fee, but you'll beat the lines, which will likely be gruesome. There's updated information on ticket prices ($13!) and availability right here.

As for Twins Jazz, you can also buy tickets online, if that helps any. Sounds like a great day and evening. -- Maura

Washington, D.C.: RE: Island Jim's - Call before you go. It may not be open for awhile due to the recent incident there in Brookland. I heard it may be open this weekend, but currently it is closed.

The Going Out Gurus: Good reminder, D.C. They plan to reopen soon. -- Fritz

Petworth: The Finnish Embassy is cool, but the BEST embassy event I've ever been to was a port tasting at the Portugese embassy (Actually, I think it was the residence)

The Going Out Gurus: Can I come next time?

Somewhere, USA: GoGs, thanks for the chats and all the great info you give out on the website! One request though, I was wondering if in the future when you mention special or new events in the Weekly Agenda column, that you say if there's a cover charge. Of course for an event at a place like Five we can just assume, but for instance some friends and I went to Ortanique last saturday to check out Solaris and I was rather appalled that they were charging $10 cover. I don't think a dinky restaurant-turned-club playing top 40s hip hop is providing enough of a good thing to charge $10 and if I had known in advance none of us would have gone. Is it just me? Maybe I'm used to not paying anymore and I'm spoiled. Thanks for the consideration!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Somewhere. Rhome and I usually don't put start times, cover charges, etc. into the "This Week in Nightlife" listings. For space reasons, we just provide an overview and a link so people can find directions, etc., on the event page.

Sorry to hear Solaris wasn't all that. I have to admit I wanted it to be good. -- Fritz

Chinatown: Hey fellas,
My girlfriend and I are going to the Charlottesville/Shenandoah area this weekend and are looking to tour some vineyards and do some camping. Do you have any campgrounds to suggest? I'm looking for places with fairly private sites and NO BIG RV'S! Also, I'd appreciate a list of a few vineyards in that area. Sending good vibes to the rain gods...

The Going Out Gurus: Big Meadows Campground is open now, and there's no RV hookups. Call 540-999-3500, or make a reservation online with the Park Service. Take your pick of these Virginia vineyards. -- Anne

Captain 20: I'm going down the slide if captain 20 makes a come back

The Going Out Gurus: Then slide you must. The realest of the Captains, Dick Dyszel will be at Transformer on Saturday between 2 and 3 to greet the children he raised. I wouldn't miss this for the world. -- Kate
