Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

The Going Out Gurus:
It's about 105 degrees outside today, so if you've still got the sheet plastic and duct tape over your windows, it might be time to take it down. And instead of reading this chat, you should probably be outside enjoying the early arrival of summer. But for those of you who can't abandon your cubicles, we're here to answer your questions. This is Joe and today everyone is here: Alexa, Kate, Jen, Maura, Rhome, Anne and even the lovely Fritz (well rested after his Lancaster County vacation). Fire away.
Dulles, Va:
Hi guys,
Was wondering if you heard about a new club called "Solaris" thats suppossed to be opening up this weekend? Also, just went to the "Reef" in Adams Morgan, great place! No cover, big drinks, and great people. I reccomend it for a good starting or ending point.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Dulles. Sounds like you should be reading the "This Week in Nightlife" column that Rhome and I write each week. We've got info on both in the latest edition (which appeared today). Here's the short version: Solaris isn't an actual club, but the new Saturday night dance party/lounge event at Ortanique, with DJs, cocktails, etc. I've been wondering why Ortanique was never open late on weekends. Now it will be.
As for the Reef, tonight is their big one-year anniversary party. Doors open at 9 (there's a private party from 6 to 9), and they'll have drink specials. Best of all, the rooftop deck will be open. -- Fritz
Office with no windows:
Gurus-
My parents are coming into town this weekend, and we need a nice place to eat dinner in Laurel. Being a city girl, I don't know much about the area. The parents are pretty adventurous in the culinary arena, we the last few places we've been to are Maggiano's and Sequoia. Something nice in that price range?
You guys rock. Cherry Blossoms, woo!
The Going Out Gurus: I'd better throw this one out to the group. I'm not good on Laurel. Laurel anyone? A nice dinner? -- Alexa
Baltimore, Md.:
I heard a horrible rumor that Whitey's in Arlington is closing. Is that true? If so, that's too bad. It was always an oasis of slight rowdiness in quickly gentrifying neighborhood. I'll miss it.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Bawlmer, Whitey's has closed for good. The wonderful Kim O'Donnel was by this morning, and she reports that there's a sign on the door that says, "Whitey's has closed. Thanks for 26 wonderful years." I've tried to get in touch with the owners, but no success yet. We'll have the full story as soon as possible, but I'll bet it has something to do with the "repairs" that have been taking place recently. -- Fritz
Arlington, Va.:
FYI -- "Phone Booth" is going to be at Uptown tomorrow, so all the questions about "Two Towers" can go away.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, it's true, Arlington. And I for one am thrilled, if only because it means I (Jen) don't have to keep calling that poor woman at the Uptown box office who never knows what the schedule is going to be. By the way, kids, "Phone Booth" gets a good review in tomorrow's Weekend section, so it might be worth a look-see.
College Park, Md.:
Hi all,
I know that this is slightly off-topic, but I need some help: My friend's younger brother is stationed on the USS Constellation, and he asked me to send him two DJ magazines -- ESDJCO and Knowledge Magazine. I've checked the big-name bookstores, and I've had no luck. Do you have any idea where I can track them down? I don't want to let him down, and I know that care packages help a lot.
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I've seen these around but can't pinpoint them. Give DJ Hut, Yoshitoshi and Capital City Records a call. They might not have have them on the racks in the big chains but I bet the Borders in Pentagon City or downtown can special order them for you. Their offerings can skew pretty far into the specialty areas. - Rhome
Rockville, Md.:
Is it true that Dominic, DJ Dredd, isn't playing at Aroma on Fridays anymore?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, it is true. He personally sent out an email informing his supporters. He'll pop up somewhere else soon, there's always the Prince parties. - Rhome
Arlington, Va.:
Just wanted to add to the constant search for thrift stores. Here's a link to every thrift store in Prince George's County from the county Web site. There's some really great ones in there.
http://www.dllr.state.md.us/lmi/profile/0008/empsic593.htm
The Going Out Gurus: Thank you Arlington.
Moni:
FYI -- Starbucks is coming to Adams Morgan at the corner of 18th and Columbia.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes indeedy, it looks to be a Starbucks. And the early word is that the former Shake Your Booty space on 18th Street is going to be a mom 'n' pop ice cream shop. More on that as soon as I know it's true. -- Kate
Silver Spring, Md.:
I am hoping the all-knowing gurus can help! I am looking for a nice restaurant for a Saturday afternoon lunch for six adults. Four are from out of town and I want them to have a great meal, nice but not overly priced. There is one vegetarian. A restaurant that is not too loud and serves a variety of options -- in the Alexandria/Northern Virginia region (semi-close proximity to 95). I was thinking of driving past the cherry blossoms and then into Virginia to eat lunch. Any ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: A nice place for lunch on Saturday -- what about somewhere in Shirlington? And they all have outdoor seating. There's THAI Shirlington, Carlyle Grand, Cap City, Bistro Bistro. I think the Thai or Carlyle might suit you best. And the best thing -- it's right off 395. -- Alexa
Laurel, MD:
re: where to eat in Laurel
Pasta Plus is a perennial favorite, but there's also Latin Flavor (Puerto Rican food), Kebab on Rt. 1 for good Indian Food. If you want to go a little further afield, Mandalay Cafe on Rt. 1 in College Park is just stellar.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Laurel. I knew someone would come up with the goods.
Arlington VA:
If it rains Saturday I'll probably be inside spring cleaning instead of gazing at cherry blossoms. can any of the gurus (Fritz, Joe?) give insight into the benefits of a Swiffer?
The Going Out Gurus: This is Joe and I'm a big fan of the swiffer. Makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something.
Glover Park, Washington, D.C.:
Happy Thursday GoGs,
And what a beautiful Thursday it is! I celebrated my birthday this week and am getting some people together (about 20-something people) to go out to Five on Saturday night. I heard they don't charge cover before 11 p.m., anyone know if this is true? I have called the club and they don't say anything on their answering machine and have left messages and read the Post couldn't find anything. 2nd, anyone ever had the VIP Table service there? Have any idea what that exactly is? (bottled water? a waitress?)
On 2 completely different notes, any idea when Tom Tom will open back up? Also, anyone been to the reincarnation of Panic at St. Ex on Friday nights? Is it the same great cheesy 80s music with no cover?
Oh and Fritz, hope Amish country was great!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Glover Park. Loads of questions, loads of answers.
I just wrote a nice big article about Five, which you can read in tomorrow's Weekend section. They do charge a cover on Saturdays -- $10 -- but you can also e-mail Five@PrimacyCompanies.com to try and get on the guest list. Explain your situation and you may be rewarded for bringing a huge group. Also, I know that some nights have a "bring five girls, get in free" promotion, so that might be worth trying.
As far as the VIP table service, I haven't had it, but it's a small area of tables upstairs.
Tom Tom: I was by the other night and it seems like they're up and running, Nintendos and all.
Panic: The music is the same -- '80s, New Wave, Britpop, alt-rock with Pogo and James. The space is a lot smaller, though, and seems to have as much lounging and socializing as dancing. Head over there early to get a good spot -- hey, it's free.
Amish Country: All I can say is, "Don't believe anything you read about the Gurus." I was in a much less sober place (literally). -- Fritz
Washington, DC:
Hi GOG's -
My mom's in town and we'd like to do something tonight besides just dinner. We like art, classical and jazz music, etc. Anything good going on?
thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Washington. You can mix art and music at the Phillips Collection tonight. Tonight it's jazz from the Joshua Bayer Duo. The Corcoran also stays open late this evening or you can check out classical music and Indian dance at tonight's Millennium Stage. -- Maura
Don't be jealous!:
It's my birthday tomorrow and my fiancee and I have tomorrow off and want to spend the day in the city and don't want to drive much in this beautiful weather. But we tend to wander around Georgetown and Dupont and window shop. We've done the Mall, most museums, etc. I definitely want to stroll the zoo and photgraph as many cherry blossoms as possible and we plan to see "Bend it like Beckham" and have lunch in G'town (I want to walk from Rosslyn to the theater). Any other ideas or am I being too ambitious? Any lunch recommedations near the G' town theater (I'm not paying!)? Thanks so much.
The Going Out Gurus: It's your birthday, and you can be ambitious if you want to, but that does seem like quite a lot in one day. I (Jen) think you've got to lose the zoo, especially if part of your aim is not to drive much. Assuming you still pursue the walking from Rosslyn-to-Georgetown plan, I suggest you stop for lunch at Amma, which is not far from the Key Bridge. Then you can walk off the Indian meal as you head to the theater to see "Beckham," which also has that Indian theme going (see how it all ties together?). I hope you have time to see some blossoms before or after the film. One option: instead of walking, you could always bike. That way, you also could bike along the trail beside the GW Parkway and catch some nice views of the blossoms and monuments. Hope this helps, and happy birthday.
alex & ria:
I'm dying to know if the Monsoon location on M st is also doing a final close-out clearance like the one in Tyson's supposedly is. Do you gurus know anything about that and whether both of those stores are set to close or just Tyson's? Thanks much!
The Going Out Gurus: A&R, the word is they're all closing, if they haven't already. Janet has the skinny right here. -- Maura
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.:
Any thoughts about Acropolis? (as a club, not as a restaurant.) I was tempted to go in last week as Citron's line was outrageous. However, a $20 cover is a bit much to spend on a "chance." I know it must differ by day, but generally speaking, what kind of clientele frequents the
place? Seems "older," a bit more upscale.
The Going Out Gurus: There's a reason there was a line at Citron and not Acropolis. I've never thought much of the place -- I certainly wouldn't pay $20 just to get inside -- but it is a generally older, suit-wearing crowd. Drinks are overpriced, staff are okay (not the friendliest bunch I've ever encounted), decor is trite. The club has generally been half-full when I've been by, and it's not hard to figure out why. -- Fritz
Kennebunkport, ME :
Is it really that nice down there? It's snowing here...AGAIN...
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for checking in George the First. Yes,it's very warm here. We're all sweating bullets.
Washington, D.C.:
Any suggestions for a good piano bar in the area? I was in Jamaica recently, and we had an awesome piano bar in our resort. They handed out songbooks and everything. Anything remotely close to that in the area?
The Going Out Gurus: Here's our big list of piano bars. For songbook action, try the Serbian Crown. -- Fritz
College Park, Md.:
Seeing Richard III at the Shakespeare this Sunday night. I know it just opened, but anyone hear any buzz? Where should we eat nearby that's got great food? Love Zaytinya and Jaleo, but want something new.
Rock on Gurus!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, CP. Peter Marks's review makes "Richard III" sound very unusual and intriguing. So go, by all means. As far as where to eat, have you seen this?
Washington, DC:
I'm planning to go to 2941 out in Falls Church for an anniversary dinner. Tom gave the place great reviews, I was just curious to hear your opinions? What is the dress code like?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I'm not sure if any of us have been yet. But the reviews from the public continue to be rave. In Tom's chat the other day, dress code came up and he said that looking neat and tidy is respectful of the restaurant and fellow diners. However, I don't think it's a place that requires jacket and tie. Have fun. -- Alexa
New to Adam's Morgan:
Does anyone know where I can get a Brazilian bikini wax in the the District? Since it's a "sensitive area" a few recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I believe Elizabeth Arden does them in Friendship Heights and Pentagon Row. Check out their price list. -- Maura
Washington, D.C.:
What is Club Expo? I heard it was replacing Polly Esthers?
The Going Out Gurus: It's not replacing Polly Esther's. Club Expo is the latest gimmick that the club is using to lure people in. It's now top 40, hip-hop and electronic dance music all weekend long. (A few years back, "Club Expo" was the name of Polly Esther's similarly-themed thrid floor, before the subdivided the space and created Up.)
I think the place is just tired and people have stopped going, so they're changing events like mad to try to lure the crowds in. -- Fritz
Bend it:
Will Bend it like Beckham be playing at any theaters besides Georgetown this weekend? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Indeed, it will. The movie will also screen at Muvico Egyptian, Landmark Bethesda Row, Cinema Arts and Shirlington, as well as Georgetown. So there are plenty of places to see it.
RE: Solaris:
What time of music will they play at Ortanique on a Saturday night?? And why do they keep pushing the dancing when there is so little space on the dance floor (not counting the carpeted place where the waiters constantly are). I love it for salsa but can't go often since there is just not enough room.
The Going Out Gurus: They're not really pushing the DJ, per se. I think they want to be more of a late night lounge, but I'm told the music will be house, hip-hop and salsa. You're right, the dance floor is small. I'm guessing they'll move a lot of the tables out of the way. -- Fritz
Cubeville, DC:
Hey GoGs, you rock! Love your chat!
I am looking for a place to go swing dancing with the guy I'm seeing. A place with a drop in mini-lesson, then dancing. District, MD, VA, doesn't matter (he's in MD, I'm in VA, I work in DC).
Also, if you know of any salsa things that follow the same arrangement (drop in lesson then dancing), let me know!
Thanks a million!
The Going Out Gurus: In addition to these (I just put "salsa" in the search engine) I'd add these.
Fritz sez that most swing spots don't have drop-in classes, you've got to sign up for a series of classes. Exceptions would be Chevy Chase Ballroom on Mondays and Fridays, Glen Echo on Saturday and Fridays at some spot called Zoot's in Fairfax. - Rhome
Washington, DC:
Hey GoGs!
I'm all excited about the Silver Theatre opening in Silver Spring. Now how do I get myself into one of the cool shindigs before the official public opening? If anybody has the dirt, it's you.
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) am also excited, D.C. The Silver Theatre will be a fantastic place for movie-goers, especially those who have been dying to see classic films on big screens again. It's simply a beautiful facility.
As far as getting in before the public opening, all you have to do is knock on the theater five times, then whisper the word "Rosebud" and the doors will magically swing open. But seriously, folks ... all of those events are invitation-only as far as I know. So if you know someone who got an invite, perhaps you can beg them to let you tag along. The public opening is only a week away, though, (the theater opens April 11) so it shouldn't be that hard to wait, right?
Yes, see Richard III!:
I saw it last week and I -LOVED- it. Great theater. Everyone, go see it!
The Going Out Gurus: And there's your buzz, building right here before your eyes.
Adams Morgan, Washington, DC:
OK Gurus,
It's that time of the year -- good spots outdoors for evening happy hours and warm nights? I'm looking around the Adams Morgan-U St-Dupont area and still not happy with my choices.
Stetsons isn't as fun now that they lost their good specials, Grille 88 is a little weak, Local 16 a little too much of a scene. And something tells me Reef's roof and St-Ex's little patio will be too crowded for any spontaneous droppings by. Tell me I'm not just being too picky or difficult! Lead me to the promised land!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Adams Morgan. I'm working on updating all the outdoor guides today -- that's Georgetown, Adams Morgan, Dupont, Arlington and Bethesda, to start, so bear with me for a day or so.
You're right about the Reef and Saint-Ex. Saint-Ex is small. The Reef is large, but they limit the crowds on the roof. You're right that Stetson's isn't as good without the specials, but I like Local 16's roof.
A few suggestions (although you may have considered them already) might include the patio at Fox and Hounds, the late-night patio at Kramerbooks, the rooftop at Wazuri (if it's not busy, you can just have snacks there), the tiny tables outside Larry's Lounge, the back patio at the Blue Room and Tom Tom's rear deck. (Whew.) Okay, readers. Your turn to recommend an outdoor spot. -- Fritz
Solaris:
The DJ is awesome!
The Going Out Gurus: Before the night even starts?
Nervous and Confused:
I have a 4th date Saturday night -- and I'm not sure where I stand with the guy...I really like him, not sure if he likes me or just wants to be friends or what. What's someplace in Virginia that's kind of romantic, but not too romantic, but we can eat outside, and maybe I can get him drinking, and...aargh!!! Boys are stressful!
The Going Out Gurus: Ah, Nervous, we don't really understand the confusion or the fourth date, but try Gua-Rapo in Arlington for cocktails and a bite or the walled garden at Taverna Cretekou in Old Town. -- Maura
Re: bikini wax:
Katiana at Ilo Day Spa in Georgetown does a great job.
The Going Out Gurus: And here's more.
I'm intrigued:
what is this brazilian bikin wax of which you speak?
The Going Out Gurus: We're not falling for this.
Petworth:
So, I see from today's paper that the Silver Theater is re-opening. Very exciting.
Now, what's going on with the Avalon (no updates to their web page lately)?
And thanks for the update on the Uptown. Ah well, perhaps the next movie will be one I want to see. At least Phone Booth will probably not stay there as long as LOTR:TT.
The Going Out Gurus: Nice to hear from you, Petworth. I've been hearing that the Avalon will open later this month, but last I passed by, it looked like there was still work to be done. I'm in touch with some of the people who are working on the project, though, so when something's happening, you'll know.
It's an exciting time to be a movie-goer in D.C., though, that's for sure. -- Jen
20-something non-drinkers in Reston:
I have just discovered this chat and think you might be able to help me...actually, my son, who would probably never post this query. He's just turned 21 but does not drink. Most of his friends are in their late teens-early 20's and are non-drinkers, as well. Where can they go to have a good time, meet members of the oposite sex and listen to music/dance in a somewhat less "boozy" atmosphere than most of the clubs downtown? Any places in No VA would be a plus. I have informed these guys that they are not likely to meet any new people (at least under the age of 45) just hanging out in my family room, but they don't seem to believe me!
The Going Out Gurus: Fascinating question, Reston. First, I'd suggest coffeehouses as a one-step transition from your basement. Good for lounging. But also, I'll argue that non-drinkers can get everything out of bars that others do. (And they probably won't spend as much. Not everyone has Fritz's expense account.) Near you, Carpool, a billiards hall, is laidback, and Jimmy's Old Town Tavern hosts a trivia night and foosball tournament. Read more about this in Fritz's story on things to do in bars besides drink. Or, see the example of Chad, recently featured in the Weekend section. He's a non-drinker with a social life few can keep up with. Non-drinking readers, let's hear from you. -- Anne
Washington, D.C.:
Are there any bars or restaurants on rooftops in D.C.? I'd like to sit outside, but not at street level, and have some food and drinks.
The Going Out Gurus: Sure, Washington. Places where you can get food as well as drinks include Wazuri, Perry's, the Reef, Lauriol Plaza, the Hotel Washington, Brick's Tavern, Alamo Grill, Old Glory ... You might want to call first, though, because not everyone is ready to open their outdoor areas at the first ray of sunshine. -- Fritz
Bow Chicka Wow Wow:
Hey Fritz, meet me at the Angry Inch later. I have something to show you!
The Going Out Gurus: I'm not the biggest fan of the Angry Inch. Sorry.
Arlington, VA:
Hey Gurus! Do you guys know of any great restaurants that cater light fare luncheons? I am throwing a bridal shower later this month and am looking for a bakery/restaurant that can put together finger sandwiches, fruit and cheese plates, assorted salads, and desserts for a group of 15-18 guests. They also must deliver. I would like to keep the cost of the food to around $500 if possible. Any suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I bet Baked and Wired in Georgetown might help. Or Firehook.
Or better yet, Bittersweet in Old Town. Three goodies. -- Alexa
Brazilian:
Skin Savvy on Connecticut in Dupont does them. It's a lovely place. I think (think) they're 40 bucks....
The Going Out Gurus: The Brazilians are lining up.
Brazilian:
There's a waxer at Andre Chreky who does them, but she's only there Thursday-Saturday and her schedule fills quickly.
The Going Out Gurus: More.
Brazil:
Headlines (senate side) or Z (house side) on the Hill both do Brazilians.
The Going Out Gurus: And more.
Studio Theater:
Anyone seen the current ofering at the Studio Theater? I am supposed to go this weekend.
The Going Out Gurus: I haven't caught it, but the review in yesterday's paper was very positive. And Edward Albee's always interesting, so it should be enjoyable.
By the way, I also recommend "Ain't Misbehavin'" -- I agree with Peter Marks that it wasn't as lively in certain places as it could have been, but it's still great fun and a nice diversion. E. Faye Butler rules. -- Jen
Closing time:
A few months ago you explained why all the bars in DC close at different times. Can you tell us again?
The Going Out Gurus: It's the law. You can't drink alcohol in a bar after 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, or after 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. -- Fritz
Somewhere, USA:
Any ideas for a a place to sit outside and grab dinner tonight? Criteria: cheap, walking distance to G'town/Glover Park, and cheap.
The Going Out Gurus: Seats on Old Glory's narrow balcony will be hard to come by I'm sure, but what better way to welcome barbecuing back into our lives. Keep the costs down with a burger each and a rootbeer. Mr. Smith's has a garden patio and a burger menu (best on Tuesdays when burgers are half price). If you want to dine outside (and outside of burgers) within the 12-20 dollar range (not chee-eee-eeeap, per say but geographically speaking cheap) what about Cafe La Ruche? They've consistently smartened up their patio. It can be noisy when the planes rumble overhead. But I promise you, desserts are memorable. Otherwise, I recommend ordering a pizza and salad to go from the new-ish Pizzaria Paradiso and picnicking near the Key Bridge. It's a nice night for an "Atomica." -- Kate
PS. Only 28 more sleeps: The Savoy Hotel's patio aka The Deck (real burgers) is not opening until May.
Arlington, VA:
I wanted to head to Visions tomorrow night for 'He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not', but I understand you can't get tickets in advance. I thought, ideally, about stopping by there for happy hour and picking up tix for the 9:30 show. Is that feasible? Do they sell out early and often?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) think you should be just fine if you pick up tickets at happy hour time. Enjoy the show.
beer question for fritz or others:
can someone explain what the deal is with steel reserver cans?
i see them all over the ground at mcpherson sq park and a random lady showed up at my friends house with a can of it.
its it gourmet and tasty?
The Going Out Gurus: No. I believe it's malt liquor and around 8 percent alcohol. Maybe your friend was low on cash? -- Fritz
Washington, DC:
Please help! Need a moderately priced retaurant in Foggy Bottom for parent's dinner on Friday night. I checked TWP resataurant listing and I really didnt see anything. Suggestions, please!!
The Going Out Gurus: Go to the Circle Bistro in One Washinton Circle Hotel, or head up New Hampshire to Firefly. Both are moderate-ish. -- Alexa
About the cherry blossums:
can someone give me an update on the blossums?
how are they doing?
am i running out of time to see them?
The Going Out Gurus: This weekend will be jam-packed for peak bloom time, but no worries, the Park Service predicts peak bloom will last until next Thursday. See our Cherry Blossoms guide for info.
Tenelytown, Washington, D.C.:
Are there any late night movie theaters in the D.C. area? Preferably in Upper NW, but anywhere Metro accessible will do.
The Going Out Gurus: You might try Loews Georgetown, the Uptown or Visions, which offers midnight movies every Friday and Saturday. Bear in mind that, depending on the length of the movie you see, the Metro may have stopped running by the time you leave the theater.
Upper Georgetown, Washington, D.C.:
Hey, GOGs -- look forward to your chats every week. Tell me, why aren't there any decent bars in Glover Park? The neighborhood is full of 20- and 30-somethings that would love a local hangout. We have a few restaurants with small bar areas, but nothing large enough to hang out for a couple beers with a big group of friends. And the Grog is OK if you have a penchant for bad music and bad beer. Know of anyone with plans to open something up there? Can you guys talk someone into opening a bar there? You'd be performing a great community service.
The Going Out Gurus: Good question, Glover Park. There's always the Zebra Lounge, and I dig the German beer at Old Europe, but you're right. Have you tried the Deck at the Savoy Suites hotel? It's opening soon, and has a nice outdoor bar for warm-weather drinks. -- Fritz
Burke, VA:
I'd like some ideas for a scenic 2-4 mile walk with the spouse and pooch. Would the Tidal Basin be too crowded for Puppy Boy this weekend?
The Going Out Gurus: I've often seen leashed dogs around the Tidal Basin, but, yes, the Tidal Basin path will be thick and very slow moving this weekend. If Puppy Boy doesn't do well in crowds, you'd be wise to take him to alternative blossom-viewing spots.
Ashburn, VA:
A friend of mine told me about a restaurant opening up in Falls Church called Nectar. Have you heard anything about this place-- type of food, when it is opening, etc.? Thanks Gurus. Wish I could be outside enjoying the weather.
The Going Out Gurus: No. And we call ourselves Gurus?
Fox and Hounds:
I took my boyfriend there after a 2 year absence, because I kept raving about how cool I remembered it to be. (well, not cool, but not scary and real cheap). So we went there and it was the most depressing thing I'd seen in a while. Everyone there is sad and quiet, the jukebox is empty. I don't remember feeling this way 2 years ago, did the place change? I felt really awkward.
The Going Out Gurus: Don't think so. Maybe you were there on a bad day? Last time I was in, the jukebox was blasting and the "mixed" drinks were still cheap as ever. I certainly wouldn't describe the place as depressing. -- Fritz
Washington DC:
Hey all -
Not technically an entertainment question, but I figured I could get an answer here....
I happened to glance at a magazine recently which gave a rundown on the best stores in Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan and the U Street Corridor for funky clothes, home and personal accessories, etc., which included a LOT of stores I've never heard of (like Sugar). I live in Dupont Circle so I was really surprised to hear that all these cool places existed unbeknownst to me.... anyway, since I can't remember which magazine it was, I can't look up the article, but I'd like to get your or your readers' suggestions on the best off-beat places for funky/cool clothes, shoes, etc. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. The recent issue of Lucky highlighted stores downtown and even a few in the burbs. But keep in mind, you can search those stores and more -- Wild Women Wear Red, Daisy, All About Jane, Home Rule-- in our shopping guide by neighborhood. -- Maura
Alexandria, VA:
I'm asking for a refund--I never got my spring. Ah, from snow to summer in a few short days.
Anyway, is the Mall insane at the moment? Thought about strolling beneath the cherry blossoms this evening, as I'm about to move away from this great city and country of ours. But I hate crowds.
The Going Out Gurus: Insanity rules. See above for less crowded places to take in blossoms. Evening is a great idea, and full of romance, too.
Washington, D.C.:
I am curious about when the circus will do its parade of animals from the train station to D.C. Armory. I understand it is done shortly before the Barnum & Bailey Circus appears at the D.C. Armory each year, but I always seem to miss it. Do you have any information about that?
The Going Out Gurus: The circus animals are not doing a full-scale parade this year. But there will be a short "walk" from the train tracks to the Armory on Monday night, tentatively starting at 8 p.m. We'll update you when we hear more. -- Anne
Adams Morgan, Washington, DC:
I met some friends for drinks at Mantis on Saturday night. Its a new place on Mintwood and Columbia. I have to say i was really disappointed. The interior just doesnt work well with the low furniture and i couldnt shake the impression that everyone was sitting in lawn furniture in a big white room. It was a bit unsettling. Any other impressions?
The Going Out Gurus: I was in last Saturday night as well, Adams Morgan. I'm going to give Mantis another chance or two before passing judgement, and while I liked the large, comfy couches, I also have reservations about the decor, especially the barstools. (I'm skinny, but they seem so small.) It's the modern thing, you know, all the low furniture and white walls. I like the Asian tapas, though.
Anyone else been through? -- Fritz
National aquarium:
I went to the national aquarium recently and I just wanted to let you know that they do charge an entry fee for adults. I am writing to let you know this because the entertainment guide lists it as being free. Also if any of you have plans on going there I would put it off for awhile, they are currently working on alot of the exhibits.
The Going Out Gurus: You're right, it's no longer free, but $3.50 ages 11 and up. Let's hope those rennovations make the charge worthwhile. -- Maura
Alexandria, VA:
Re: swing dancing....Zoots is temporarily closed down until they find another venue. and Chevy Chase only has drop in on Fridays...Monday night is a series class....I would definately recommend Glen Echo now that the weather is nice--it is a semi-outdoor venue.
But enough about swing, where can i go out and groove to my favorite 70s tunes??
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip.
70's? Anywhere Adrian Loving, Stevie G, Curtis Lee or Grits N Gravy are playing.
Adrian will be at Lounge 201 tomorrow and Saint-Ex on Saturday. Stay tuned for a new weekly featuring most of the above named dj's. - Rhome
Wishing I could be outside, Washington, D.C.:
Dear GOGs,
Help! I asked you this question last week, but you were not able to get to it. Do you have any suggestions of bars/restaraunts that allow one to rent a private room? I am planning a post-wedding reception party and need to find a space that can accomodate 100 people for a cash bar. Some of these people will be older so it can't be someplace too too rowdy. Any help or ideas would be appreciated
The Going Out Gurus: Type "party locations" into our blue search box, and you'll find what you need.
Washington, D.C.:
Hey guys,
How's the happy hour scene at the new RFD by the MCI Center? I popped my head in there once and, with so many tables, it looked more like a sit-down dinner place. Thoughts?
The Going Out Gurus: It's not really a dinner place. All the tables are open to groups of beer drinkers as well as diners. And if you go at happy hour, you might beat the rush -- and maybe get a seat at the bar (which will get you served A LOT faster than sitting at a table). -- Fritz
Oops, not the Studio Theater:
I think maybe its the SOURCE theater I am supposed to go to. Any buzz about what I am getting myself into?
The Going Out Gurus: Oh, you must be talking about "My Boyfriend the Stripper," which is rather different from Edward Albee. I do know there is nudity and that the play deals with sexual themes. And apparently a porn star is in it. If all that is making you a little nervous, you might reconsider going. If you're cool with it, then go -- and let us know how it was.
Dupont, Washington, D.C.:
Can you give me the five best places for take out lunch in Dupont Circle, without including Au Bon Pain?
The Going Out Gurus: Dupont, four for the road: Teaism, Moby Dick, Firehook, Marvelous Market -- Alexa and Maura
Arlington VA:
I have my lil' siss (18yrs) and friends coming into town this weekend, and they want to party. We've done Platinum and had a good time, but I was thinking about trying to find a band somewhere in the city (any idea's besides Black Cat and 9:30) or checking out (heaven forbid) PolyEster's (does that place filled up? and what is a better night there?). Do you have any better ideas (I've done the 18+ search). They seem to like everything but hard core techno. I'm game for either fri. or sat. night. What do you think?
The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, you might be out of luck. I've been seeing fewer and fewer 18-and-over nightclubs on Friday and Saturday nights. (Polly Esther's is now 21 and over on Friday and Saturday, but the way.) Your only other option, really, is Insomnia, where it's hip-hop on the main floor and salsa and Latin music upstairs on Friday, and trance on Saturday, unless you want to hit gay clubs like Badlands and Velvet Nation, and I'm not sure that's what you're looking for. -- Fritz
Arlington, Va.:
I have a friend visiting from tonight till Sunday, and I'm broke. What can we do that requires little money for three days?
The Going Out Gurus: Cherry Blossoms are free, crowded but free. And if you're down on the Mall, Tidal Basin or the Sakura Street Festival. I wholly recommend that you two stop inside the Willard Hotel, even if just to take in the sumptuous blossom-inspired decor. It's where the first official Japan legation to come to America stayed. And if you're not honestly and completely broke, you can sample three "boutique" sakes for a tenner. I know I mentioned this last week, but I want to let you know how surprised I was by these petal soft and let's face it, highly voltaged liquors. And all for ten bucks. You friend will think you're very smart.
Also, a good deal, the Cap City Bar Crawl, if that's your thing. Again, it's set you back a tenner to get in if you each bring two cans of food. It's $13 without the donation. Personally, I'd check into the Black Cat on Friday for Ms. Spice's go-go show. Admission is $7 and the vibe, like the cherry b's is pure DC. -- Kate
re: ortanique:
where is it and how's the dress code there?
thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Ortanique is here. Dress fashionable -- no athletic wear, puh-leeze!
Washington, DC:
Hey got-planners, I'm tardy but hope you can take this. Any recommendations for a twentysomething to get over her fear of water and finally learn to swim this summer?
The Going Out Gurus: When you're ready, jump into a class at the Y or the DCJCC, the latter was particularly friendly on the phone. Good for you! -- Kate
Former Pittsburgher:
Any ideas where I can find Iron City on tap or in a bottle?
The Going Out Gurus: Yep. Try the Penn Ave. Pourhouse for IC (and IC Light) on draft. -- Fritz
Mt Pleasant's goin outta her turf:
Destination: The Hill for Eastern Market on Saturday afternoon.
Question: Places within walking distance for afternoon beverage and munchie with outdoor seating?
I know, I know...everyone wants the skinny on the pat-i-o....but we have to take advantage of sun while we can!
The Going Out Gurus: Easy: Cafe Berlin. Great beer. -- Fritz.
The Going Out Gurus:
OK, that's it everyone. Thanks for chatting. Tell your boss you're taking the rest of the day off. See you here next week.
