Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Folks, we are buzzing, for it's been a nonstop party for Joe's birthday -- yes, it's today! First the dueling DJs last night, spinning into the wee hours, and now, all these presents we have to help him unwrap. Whoever sent the handknit sweater with the 3-D appliques of Veterans Stadium on the front, we want you to know he just adores it. Oh, wait. You didn't know it was his birthday, you just wanted to thank him for proving that Brreaking Out of Winter is easy to do? You're so kind. But please, pace yourself. There's Mardi Gras coming up, and Alexa, Fritz, Janet, Jen, Kate, Maura, Rhome, and the birthday man himself are ready to help you celebrate. I'm Anne, here to say: on with the shoutouts.
Washington, D.C.:
I'm looking for an outstanding Greek restaurant for dinner. I went to one on Pennsylvania Avenue on the Hill, but it was awful. Any ideas for one that will make me think I'm in Greece?
The Going Out Gurus: Here's what I suggest Washington, that you go to Zaytinya. I know we bang about that place, but it's good, it's new and will certainly help transport you to the isles. Otherwise there's the Mykonos Grill in Rockville. People tend to like Tavern Cretekou in Old Town. I like its terracota tiled floor and the taramasalata. But otherwise it's expensive and the staff members are grumpy. -- Alexa
20009:
So I'm going to call in sick tomorrow if the
blizzard doesn't shut down the city. I want
to go to The Mall to see all the art exhibits
I've missed over the past couple of
months. I'm into more modern and
Futurist stuff, but willing to check out
anything if it's cool--just don't send me in
the direction of a Crystal-City-secretary's
Impressionist wall calendar... So, what
do you recommend?
The Going Out Gurus: 20009, your best bet is the Gerhard Richter show at the Hirshhorn which just opened this morning. It blew audiences away at MOMA last year and is definitely worth a look. Keeping on with the Germans, check out early 20th century works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner at the National Gallery; paintings once banned as "degenerate." Though not as dark as his fellow German Expessionists, they're hardly sunny wall calendar material. I loved the show. -- Maura
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.:
Drove by Ristorante Murali (across from the Convention Center) yesterday, and was intrigued by its tacky exterior, but a look at their Web site makes them seem much classier, and their entree prices seem reasonable. Any reviews of this place?
The Going Out Gurus: No. I've not been. Let's ask the group. Group?
Alexandria, Va.:
Hey there Gurus,
I need an air-hockey fix, but the only place I know of is Jillian's at Arundel Mills. Anything closer to D.C.? I'm talking the big tables like you'd find in boardwalk arcades.
You guys rock!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Alexandria. As part of their recent refurbishment, Uncle Jed's Roadhouse in Bethesda added an air hockey table, and I'm pretty sure there's one on the game level of ESPN Zone. I'm less clear on whether you'd find one at Georgetown Billiards, but hopefully someone out there knows for sure. -- Fritz
Bethesda, Md.:
Gurus, help! Where can I go sledding? I'm looking for some place on the route between Bethesda, Foggy Bottom and Clarendon. Are you allowed to sled on the hill at the zoo? The hills of my childhood have all turned into townhouses.
The Going Out Gurus: Fritz has seen the pandas go sledding at the zoo, but we don't know anyone who's tried out Tiger Hill. Let us know if you have. Maura feels your pain on the demise of Bethesda's childhood sledding spots. Here's the official word on sledding, what's really allowed. But here's a clue on my favorite place: last week I took to the classic hill at a school in Cleveland Park, while some friends with old-school metal-runner sleds schussed at the National Cathedral. -- Anne
Thank you from Downtown, DC:
Fritz -
Your suggestions last week were fabulous for our bachelorette party. We spent a few hours with my new favorite bartender Jaquelette at Poste and will certainly return for their amazing martinis! Home was a great place to dance the night away and finally what kind of true DC night is it without a slice from Pizza Mart at 3 am? Thanks - it truly made the bride's night special.
The Going Out Gurus: After Pizza Mart, I'd worry that the bride's next morning was "special" as well. Me, I'd love to get a crepe or panini at 3 a.m., but, those are the breaks. Glad you had a good time. -- Fritz
Golden Triangle:
In light of a drool-inducing article in the New York Times about places to get really good hot chocolate in that city, do the Gurus or others know of places in D.C. where one can get a really terrific cup of hot cocoa? Weather like this just demands it.
The Going Out Gurus: GT, I had one of the best cups I've ever head recently at Kingsbury Chocolates. Wow, it was good, made with real shaved chocolate, and no added sugar. Fan-tastic. But let's ask the folks at home for their views. -- Alexa
re: murali:
haven't been for dinner, but went to have a couple drinks, and thought the inside was very cute. we went early in the evening, so it wasn't packed, but the ambiance was nice, we'de def. go back. it's in walking distance to zaytinya too, so if you're waiting there, you can pop in for a quick drink (which is how we found it!), since the bar at zaytinya tends to be super packed.
The Going Out Gurus: Murali info. Thanks.
McLean, Va.:
Do you have any recommendations on wine bars in our area? I don't think I've ever been to one around here but I know they must exist! If it matters, I'm more interested in trying interesting wines than I am in atmosphere or location, though those are nice, too.
The Going Out Gurus: McLean, sad to say we don't have too many. In Cleveland Park, there's Bardeo, but we think the real star is Bethesda's Grapeseed. Park yourself at the tiny bar and, if you're lucky, you might just meet Roland. -- Maura
"Home":
Hey GOGS,
My friends want to go to Home tomorrow night for the "guest list" open bar. Do you know how much it is? Also, they're tryiong to tell me we have to get there at 8:30, which is really early for me, because the lines are crazy. Any thoughts- and is the place cool? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I like the place. It's well designed and has good DJs, but yeah, lines get crazy on Fridays for the open bar event. Doors open at 9, I believe, but you get free drinks until 11. You just have to decide if it's worth it for you. -- Fritz
Alexandria:
yup, there definitely are air hockey tables at ESPN Zone. I think there are about 4 of 'em.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks. I thought I'd seen them there. -- Fritz
Rockville, Md.:
Mighty GOGs!
Which resort would you recommend for night skiing in the area -- cheap and good?
Any interesting flamenco or tango shows in near future?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Our resident travel guru, Ben, tells me that Whitetail is the way to go. It's close, well-lit and not too expensive.
And here's a link to some flamenco shows. Your problems solved in three sentences. That's not bad service. -- Jen
Foggy Bottom Cubicle:
I know it's early, with snow all around us, but any guesses on when the cherry blossom thing may be happening this year? my parents want to come to DC to catch it, and I want to make sure they don't miss it.
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: The Park Service's chief blossom predictor will name a range for the peak dates sometime next week. We'll have more details for you soon. In the meantime, get ready for the National Cherry Blossom Festival, March 22-April 7, which boasts a parade, a street festival, sake tastings, princesses, and the famed 10-mile run, whether the blossoms are ready or not. -- Anne
For the Modern Art Lover:
Check out the Biennial exhibit at the Corcoran (I think it's still there). There's some pretty funky stuff - and don't miss the Paradise Institute film... you think about it for days afterward.
The Going Out Gurus: Of course. Fantasy Underfoot, the Corcoran's Biennial is only around for a couple more weeks, so make haste. And "Paradise Institute," definitely knocked me for a loop. I think the review linked above actually gives too much of Paradise Institute's surprises away, so skip that read and just get going. -- Maura
Wine Bar:
Isn't Mendocino Wine Bar (& Grill?) in Georgetown? Never been but at least it has the name right
The Going Out Gurus: Another idea. Get a taste of that.
Deep in the "Mid-Ohio Valley":
I’M TRAPPED; TRAPPED I TELL YOU, in "fabulous" Parkersburg, West Virginia.
I’m praying the snow will break enough to let me get back to DCA, but either way by the time you Guru’s start a-chattin, I’ll either be in the air, or sobbing.
Is there any Mardi Gras to be had this weekend? My beloved will be on her own business trip on Tuesday night, so I need something to substitute for our traditional trip to the Clarendon Parade.
So does anyone serve Dixie Beer or Voodoo?
or I could just stand on the couch and toss her beads when she "shows me her... stuff."
The Going Out Gurus: There are loads of Mardi Gras parties this weekend, P-burg. Just check out the link above. I think the biggest ones will be at Lulu's, Clarendon Ballroom and MCCXXIII. If you don't want the beads and babes action, you can get your Dixie kicks at R.F.D., the Brickskeller and Lex Cajun Grill.
Just to show what a Yankee snob I am, if I drink beer from the Bayou, I love Abita Turbodog. That's on draft at the Reef and Galaxy Hut, among other bars. -- Fritz
Georgetown, Washington, D.C.:
I'm 22, new to the area, and am looking to meet some people. I'm not outgoing enough to meet new people at a bar. Can you suggest any 20-something classes, such as a cooking or art class? (I'm not skilled at either, but it's worth a shot).
The Going Out Gurus: This one combines a lot of things I know users have come through on in the past. Before I open it up to you all, off the top I remember Torpedo Factory in Alexandria for art classes. Maura just reminded me that the Smithsonian offers a lot of classes. You can get your pottery on too at several places, one in Adams Morgan. Alexa mentions the Art League. You can google about for specifics on that one. I also know that our own dear Kimmie O'Donnel has taught cooking classes at Fresh Fields. Isn't the point of taking classes to get skilled at something that you might not initially be proficient at? Get out there and make it happen! The rest of my advice for shy folks still applies - Don't go looking for people, go to things/places that are in line with your personal interests. The people part will naturally follow. - Rhome
Arlington, Va:
Hey GOGs. A couple of things: First, took my dear husband to Jaleo and to see George Gershwin Alone at the Ford's Theatre a few weeks ago. I know I'm alone in this opinion, but I wasn't that impressed with the food at Jaleo--couple of dishes were real winners and several more were not at all. The show was good, but Ford's seats are not at all comfy!!
How's the St.Paddy's parade in Alexandria? Okay for kids? Metro adjacent?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, you don't have to be impressed with the food at Jaleo. As for Ford's seats, I haven't been since the refurbishment, but it is an historic theater, and that means some of the seats may not be stadium-seating-cinema quality. Glad you enjoyed the show, though.
Re: the parade, I've never been but I believe it is very good for kids. And as it's in Olde Towne, it's not far from the Metro. -- Jen
Re: Wine Bars:
I like the small Wine Bar at Arbor in Adams Morgan. They have a separate entrance from the restaurant, free goldfish and some board games.
PS - I don't care much for the food at Arbor itself.
The Going Out Gurus: Safe Arbor.
Great Mills, MD:
I was hoping you could help me out. I just recently transfered here to Southern MD. It's ok but the night life is slow. I guess that changes with this tiki bar opening thing I heard about. Anyway, the trek up to DC every Friday and Saturday is starting to get old. I've heard there is something called Club V in Waldorf which is only half the distance. Have any of you been there? Also, do you know anything about the Solomon's Tiki bar?
Thanks for your time. This chat has really helped learn and enjoy the DC area!!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Great Mills. The Tiki Bar at Solomon's is truly an experience. Too bad it's still closed. Here's a piece about Club V, which is turning into the Dream of Southern Maryland, complete with VIP rooms.
(But I have to ask -- what kind of "classy" club with a dress code has a mechasdise kiosk selling logo t-shirts and caps?) -- Fritz
Air hockey:
Georgetown Billiards does have air hockey.
The Going Out Gurus: Brilliant. Cheers.
Re: Night skiing at Whitetail:
You should know that Whitetail is in a dry county, which can put a real damper on the fun.
The Going Out Gurus: Now, now. Drinking and skiing don't mix. At least not until you're off the slopes and inside the chalet.
Petworth:
Fritz, where are you finding crepes and panninis at 3 am? I want to go there. (I won't even wait until 3 am.)
The Going Out Gurus: Ah, I meant in a perfect world ... I haven't had them at 3 a.m. in D.C. (One place may be coming soon, but I can't say any more than that. Yet.) Chez Antoine was doing them until 2 last year, but they stopped. (For my money, those are some of the best crepes in D.C.) -- Fritz
a beer lover:
I'm with Fritz, skip the Dixie and Blackened Voodoo and go straight to the Turbo Dog!
The Going Out Gurus: Amen.
Alexandria, Va.:
Hey Gurus, it's almost Mardi Gras time! I want to get in the spirit of things. Can you tell me if there is anywhere I can get some king cake?
The Going Out Gurus: I've been somewhere recently that was going to be selling it. But I simply can't remember where it was. Has anyone got anything to say about King Cakes? -- Alexa
The Hill, Washington, D.C.:
Hi Gurus! Long time lurker, first time poster -- love the chat!
My parents are in town this weekend, and although they do want to see some of the standard touristy sights, I would like to show them that there's more to our fair city than monuments and the Smithsonian. Do you have any suggestions for permanent attractions or this-weekend-only events? The 'rents have a fairly short attention span and are here for just the weekend, so I'm thinking less museum-ish and more multi-sensory-ish. They're from Vermont so the cold won't bother them either. Thanks for any advice!
The Going Out Gurus: Good to have you here, Hill. A weekend is really pretty short by the time you get things rolling. Perhaps Sunday morning crab cakes inside Eastern Market is one way to sell the folks on the communityvilleberginess of our city. Or you could go to Montmartre for the vezy French a la carte brunch. I like a walk around Alexandria's Old Town when it's sunny and Sunday's St. Patrick's Day Parade is folksy. The Four Tops harmonize on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage (it's its sixth happy birthday) on Sunday at 6. The concert is free. CAUTION: could (depending on how old your 'rents are) reawaken memories of high school make-outs of yester year. -- Kate
Washington, D.C.:
Need advice: I'm new to D.C. and want to check out the local music scene (preferably alternative and rock music) and don't know where to start. Where are some good places (bars, clubs) to catch live music shows? I'm looking for small venues, good sound system, good bar, good atmosphere, and good bands (most importantly!)
Thanks, Gurus!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC, this is Joe (another year older and none the wiser). Live local alternative and rock music can be had at a number of places around town. The Black Cat on 14th St has shows almost every night. Some national, but many local, especially in the cool Back Room which I like even more than the main room. Also, visit the Velvet Lounge on U St. It's a tiny two-story club and the upstairs can get way too crowded, but still a good place to catch shows. Go Saturday to see the brilliant Washington Social Club play. Galaxy Hut in Arlington is another small club that does a great job of booking bands. And there's also Chief Ike's in Adams Morgan which has been booking shows with some regularity. There's a band playing there tonight which I'd recommend except that their name isn't one you can use in a family newspaper/website.
Stupid Question:
Why does the zoo always close for snow? I think it would be great to walk around outside and see the animals while snow is falling. Is it a pedestrian safety issue since it's so hilly?
The Going Out Gurus: Um, not that I've been in to see the animals while the zoo is technically closed or anything, but yeah, ice and snow all over the hills is a really, really bad thing. And most of the animals don't outside in the snow, anyway. Some, like Mei and Tian, do, but you can see them on Pandacam. -- Fritz
Hot Cocoa :
Check out Bread and Chocolate. And their French Onion soup is fab -- how's that for a decadent lunch?
The Going Out Gurus: Coco info.
5th floor, no view:
My parents are coming for an unexpected
visit this weekend--I was thinking of
taking them to see Aida. Do they have
discount tickets for it somewhere (day of
the show or TicketPlace?) Never been to
the DAR either--is there parking or should
we take Metro? Any suggestions for
dinner before? Thanks--your help will be
much appreciated by all!
The Going Out Gurus: TICKETplace has some discount tickets for "Aida" but only for Tuesday's performance. Washington Opera isn't doing standing room tickets for its Constitution Hall performances either, so you may be out of luck. Call 202-295-2400 to find out if there are any tickets left for the weekend, discount or otherwise. If you do go, I'd suggest Metro. Parking around Constitution Hall, if I remember correctly, isn't always easy. For dinner suggestions, take a look at our theater dining feature. -- Jen
Petworth:
Good hot chocolate can be had at one of my favorite little dives - Churreria Madrid. They make it with milk and good chocolate. Get a (CHEAP) plate of delicious churros to go with it, and you're all set. SO good!
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Pet.
Clifton, Va.:
Are there any piano bars in D.C. that start early? Around 5:30 or 6 p.m.? Somebody told me that the lobby bar at the Renaissance Mayflower hotel on Connecticut Avenue has one that starts early.
The Going Out Gurus: Somebody, Clifton, speaks the truth. Piano starts at 5:30 Monday-Friday in the Mayflower's Town and Country. The place is looking over-stuffed and under-loved these days by management, but I'm a loyal fan of their g & t's and bottomless bowls of premium nuts (incl. Brazils and cashews!). -- Kate
Mardi Gras Benefit!:
Good Afternoon Gurus! -
Mardi Gras is almost here and what better way to celebrate this weekend that with a piece of King Cake. Tulane Univeristy is hosting a party complete with a Mardi Gras funk band, dancing, silent auction, casino games, and a raffle. AND all proceeds will go to help the non-profit Martha’s Table, Inc. fulfill the needs of low-income children.
Tickets are $25 in advance ($35 at the door). Each ticket includes two drinks, Louisiana cuisine, a raffle ticket, Mardi Gras beads and other favors, King Cake, and Tulane giveaways.
Advance reservations can be made until this afternoon by calling (toll-free) 1-877-4-TULANE
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks. I was going to write this up for This Week in Nightlife, but was told that you had to register by Wednesday night. Did that change? Anyway, this should be a great party for a great cause. -- Fritz
Mt. Pleasant, DC:
About the classes (art and cooking) they offer a bunch at Glen Echo, no? I know they have photography and pottery at least...
The Going Out Gurus: Maura mentioned that too and I forgot. D'oh! You guys are great though! - Rhome
Metro Center:
Dear GoGs,
My friends and I will be venturing in Bethesda on Saturday evening. We are looking for a bar or lounge to hang out after dinner.
Any suggestion ? (we are in our 30s, and are looking for a fun place, but nothing like a fancy hotel piano bar or a frat boy place)
2 weeks ago, Fritz mentioned the Barking Dog ...will it be a good place for us ?
I am curious to know what you guys think about Chez Antoine, the crepe place in Adams Morgan. I have never been there. Do they do brunch ?
The Going Out Gurus: Metro Center, I'm afraid the frat boy spots are hard to avoid in Bethesda. That would include the Barking Dog. Your best bet might be the bars at Jaleo, Cafe Deluxe or the overcrowded Mon Ami Gabi. Even Rock Bottom might suit your needs. There's little that's loungey (Chrome has shut its doors, I believe). As for Chez Antoine -- as you may have seen above -- we're fans. -- Maura
Zei?:
Is Club Zei still open? What's going on there these days? Thanks Gurus!
The Going Out Gurus: Zei closed years ago. Sorry.
Ballston, Va:
Hi gurus - a little off-topic, but...do you or any of the chatters know any salons/waxers who do a good job w/ eyebrow waxing? I just had it done last week, and the woman totally burnt my skin! Any help would be great! Thanks!!
The Going Out Gurus: Have a car, Ballston? I'm a fan of the waxing at Blue Mercury in Georgetown. It's expensive, but painless, burn-free and they use this special wax from the Antipodes (possibly Nads, but does it matter?) make an appointment. -- Kate
Rockville, Md.:
You have the "going out" figured out...can you help me decide what to wear to Bon Jovi concert next weekend?
The Going Out Gurus: This probably goes without saying, but hair is paramount. It must be teased and hairsprayed, New Jersey-style, otherwise they won't let you in the door at MCI. As far as clothes, definitely wear jeans (if they're torn, all the better) and a form-fitting T-shirt. For added points, tie a bandana around your forehead, or hang a license plate that says "BONJVI" around your neck. Just don't, under any circumstances, wear a Bon Jovi T-shirt. If I may quote Jeremy Piven in "P.C.U.": "Don't be that guy." -- Jen
Arlington, VA:
Hi Gurus! Love the chats! Do you all have any recommendations for moderately priced French restaurants? Seems like most of the good ones are special occasion types. I was thinking about Bistro du Coin -- any thoughts? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Bistrot du Coin is reasonable. Montmartre on the Hill is good too. -- Alexa
Adams Morgan:
Do Alexandrians have somewhere better to be next month? Why else would there be a St Patrick's Day Parade on March 1?
The Going Out Gurus: So there won't be a conflict with D.C.'s St. Patrick's Day parade on March 16? Those Ballyshaners, they get it done.
D.C.:
Who were the dueling DJ's last night? I heard wild rumours. . .
The Going Out Gurus: Ben held it down over Galaxy Hut, I think he had the party people so riled up that he was going to smack someone who bumped his decks while he was mixing (a la Martin Lawrence in House Party). I was supposed to be doing my regular thing over at Rendezvous but the proprietor closed the spot at the last minute so I just headed to a session. - Rhome
Bethesda, MD:
I'm planning a suprise birthday party for a friend on a Tuesday night. I'm looking for a bar/lounge in the Georgetown area that's classy (he's European and easily offended) but a good time, and has a DJ and dance floor. Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Well, the bar at the recently-opened Mie N Yu is an Asian-inspired treat for the eyes, and I found most of the cocktails I sampled to be delicious. There's a DJ, but not much of a dance floor. The Harbour Club is open on Tuesday nights (Modern is closed), but I'm not sure how much dancing will be going on. You could try MCCXXIII's Evolution night, but that might offend his sensibilities. -- Fritz
Wine bars:
Don't forget the No. 9 Lounge over the Evening Star Cafe in Mount Vernon -- small, comfortable and a nice place to hang out whether dressed up or down.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, cheers.
For Lonely Bi Girl:
Hi,
This is for last week's chatter who was looking for ways to meet other women. This web site lists different social activities for the Lesbian/Bi set: http://www.womo.com/calendar.htm.
There's also the dc dykes web site at http://www.dcdykes.com/html/resources_regional.html. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the resources. Let's hope she's tuned in again.
Dupont Circle:
I've heard that the Phillips Collection has days where it's open later, or that admission price is reduced. Can you give me the details on this?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Dupont. The Phillips extends its hours every Thursday until 8:30pm. And Sundays stays open until 7pm. Prices aren't diminished, but the current Margaret Bourke White show is worth a visit. -- Maura
Washington, D.C.:
What's up, Gurus? A friend and I are thinking of heading to the new Mie N Yu in Georgetown this weekend. Have you been? Would you recommend drinks or dinner or both? What is the crowd like? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. I haven't been for a real dinner (just drinks and snacks at the bar) and Alexa's only been for lunch. Tom Sietsema wasn't too impressed, but I have no idea what meal he was there for. Having said that, the gorgeous bar was filled with attractive, well-dressed people (mostly women) in their 20s and 30s last weekend. The cocktails are fab, and I like the small plates menu, although it's a bit, um, eclectic. -- Fritz
re: Modern:
Modern is closed? For good? What happened?
The Going Out Gurus: Oh, sorry. I meant they are closed on Tuesday; For some reason, Modern is only open Thursday through Saturday at the moment. Rhome and I are upset, because we like Dirty Handz, who was spinning there on Wednesdays. -- Fritz
French!:
Everyone should be boycotting french food!!!
The Going Out Gurus: Oh relax. Check the jingoism at the door.
Arlington, Va.:
Hopefully quick question here.
We've got a group of about 10 together to go out for my birthday this Saturday. We'd like to start off at Gazuza, but none of us has ever been. Is it too small/complicated/etc., to get a group of 10 together there? If so, can you suggest another place in Dupont? We aren't looking to all sit down together at a table or anything so much as get an "area" and sort of mingle around and catch up with each other!
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. It's not to complicated to get 10 people in there if you arrive before, say, 10 or so. There's room in the back to mingle -- not sit around the same table. -- Fritz
Washington, DC:
Gurus: Answer me!!! Time is running out, and I need to know if any restaurants in the area allow you to byob. I've got just the bottle picked out, if any are amenable. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: We are pretty sure that this isn't allowed in D.C. Otherwise, I know that FireFlies in Alexandria allows it. -- Alexa
Reston:
Any ideas for 2 restless Southerners who really have had it with staying indoors and not driving and cannot ice-skate, ski, sled, etc. We're looking for a fun quiet outing for Saturday or Sunday. We've really done the Mall and Dupont and would prefer not to spend more than $100. And we're kinda geeky, computer/comics/movie buffs who love good, homey cooking. Please help!!!
The Going Out Gurus: What about a magical little night out at the Evening Star Cafe on Mount Vernon Ave. in the Del Ray 'hood of Alexandria. You two will dine for well, and for under $70. Set yourselves up in low-lit Majestic Lounge tucked behind the restaurant and play Battleship or chess or convince your neighbors to play celebrity, crack a beer or two and split the difference on a cab ride home. Family's eat here regularly, so don't plan to go earlier than 8 p.m.
Have you checked out Sterling Cinema and Draft yet? That sounds like your cup of tea: big screen and drafts (granted, "The Wild Thornberrys" is one of the three on offer. -- Kate
Waxing:
I go to Luna's on P Street, just west of Dupont circle. $9 for a very thorough job.
The Going Out Gurus: Aren't they a meatloaf joint?
Washington, DC:
Does anyone wanna make me jealous and tell me about the Common/Kweli/Gang Starr show last night?
The Going Out Gurus: I wasn't there either. I bet you'll find a lot of reviews over at okayplayer.com. I'm not going to look at them. If Premo did something with either the Roots or Common's band I'll be through. What if they recreated a bunch of classic Premo beats? Aarrghh!!!! - Rhome
17th St. :
Help. Is there a party supply store that's near a Metro stop? Your site lists a lot of places that might have some stuff, but I need a full-on supply shop with plastic dinnerware and decorations and the like and I'm car-less at the moment. Any ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: There's a Paper Store at Friendship Heights. Any chatters with more ideas? -- Maura
Kate::
...putting the words "waxing" and "nads" in the same response just made me wince.
The Going Out Gurus: For the record: my Nads are not your nads. Nads (capital Nuh) is the late-nite only on TeeVee offer waxing gel from Australia, perv.
Washington, DC:
Please tell my friend Meghan to stop reading this chat and get back to work!
The Going Out Gurus: You're busted Meghan. Now get back on the job!
Re: waxing:
Nora at Blue Mercury in Georgetown is THE BEST. She can make anyone's eyebrows look good - and no burning. She's also nice and friendly. The charge is $20.
The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, she's a goodie. -- Kate
WDC:
Fritz,
What would you put in a mixed drink in honor of the pandas?
The Going Out Gurus: Hmmmmmmm. Well, everything I would try to layer for it (say, Kahluha and Godiva white chocolate) would be way too sweet. I wonder if you can have bamboo-infused vodka. The only bamboo I've ever eaten was a bite of a friend's "Panda's Delight" veggie dish from Mr. Chen's. Anyone have any recipe suggestions? The best ones win something TBD. -- Fritz
Alexandria:
Alexa, since no one else is posting an answer, have you remembered who has king cake yet? (other than the tulane people)
The Going Out Gurus: I'm sorry to keep you hanging, Alexandria, but no I haven't and we don't seem to getting much help from the group. King cakes anyone?
Brow waxing:
Farah at Kenese in Springfield Mall. Reasonably priced ($15 plus tip) and a heck of a lot better than some of the high-end salons I've been to that charge twice as much. The trade-off, though, is that the salon is not quite as cushy as a full-on day spa.
The Going Out Gurus: Isn't 15 bucks the standard? I'm a whole new kind of cheap and think it "eyebrows" should be the same price as a movie. -- Kate
Chi Cha:
Can I wear jeans to the chi cha? I'm a girl. Just not a chi chi one. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Not a problem. Just make sure they're fashionable and not baggy. -- Fritz
MtP.:
Hey! My brothers are in town this weekend and I'm hoping for a restaurant recommendation. Looking for a "DC place" that has a good vegetarian line-up and a creative drink menu, too. We love ethnic, but all suggestions are welcome. Thanks for the help!
The Going Out Gurus: Indique has one of the most creative drink menus I've seen in a while. Try the tamarind margarita and let us know if you're feeling summer yet. It's vibrantly decorated inside, plenty of plates for vegetarians, and good for sharing if you have a group of 5-6-ish. The tandoor oven is right out in the open, so the windows all steam up. I just visited Thyme Square in Bethesda and reminded myself how heavenly it is, and their juice bar menu is quite lengthy, too. Other veg-friendly places with a real DC feel and kind service to boot: the Reef and Zaytinya, where you can look into the public library across the street.
Petworth, Washington, D.C.:
Actually, I'm eating EXTRA French food, in support of the anti war stance! (And, last week was cassoulet week at Lavandou. This week is fondue week.)
The Going Out Gurus: Ok, but we're pretty sure that whether this war happens or doesn't happen won't be decided on American's dining habits.
Rake Yohn, DC:
Hey gurus!
My parents will be in town next weekend, and I was hoping to take them to either the Vuillard or Trompe l'oleil shows - are either still open?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: I'm afraid the Trompe L'Oeil show closes this Sunday, but you won't be disappointed with the Vuillard or new Kirchner show, both at the NGA. Enjoy. -- Maura
re: French!:
Maybe we should avoid French dressing too. That'll show 'em!
The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, and kissing too! Oh wait, we don't want to give that up.
the hill:
i'm taking a pottery class at the Capitol Hill Arts Worship on the Hill. It's cheap, and I love it. They have tons of other classes, too: www.chaw.org
The Going Out Gurus: One spin on art class.
Where's Carolyn:
Love the chat. I know this isn't a "going out" question, but I'm also a huge Carolyn Hax fan, and i miss her chats. So...I have a huge crush on a long time friend of mine. Should I tell him? Any ideas on a good bar to do this at?
The Going Out Gurus: I'm going to take a stabby at this one, and please, if you think I'm doing it all wrong, tap in.
No bar in the world is a good place for this admission. This is a private conversation that stands to make either one of you deeply uncomfortable (or both deliriously happy). Do it at his place -- so you can leave if things don't go well. Am I right people? And what's wiiiith this weather?
Seriously, it's good to take a risk now and then. Hope it goes well, and in private. - Kate
arlington, va:
I just saw the king cake at the Heidelburg bakery in Arlington. As for waxing, Anesa at Andre Chreky is the best!
The Going Out Gurus: As long as we don't confuse the two! Cheers for the tips.
Alexandria, VA:
A group of us is headed to the Wizards game on Saturday night and are looking for a bar/club to go after. The problem is that one of the people is only 20. Any suggestions on where to go??
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Alexandria. There are two club choices for you: Insomnia (Trance and more trance) or Platinum (house/techno/hip-hop, but no jeans, sneakers or athletic wear allowed). Every bar around the area (R.F.D., Fado, Hooters, MVP's, etc.) asks for ID at the door. If you're lucky, you might be able to get into Gordon Biersch or the Brewer's Lounge at District Chophouse -- I've only had to show ID there when ordering a drink. You could also hit the bar at Nick and Stef's, inside the arena. -- Fritz
King Cake:
I've hunted for King Cakes around DC for each of
the past three years -- in bakeries and eateries --
and come up empty. Maybe I'm not much of a
hunter. But in any case I've settled for ordering
mine direct from the source. Haydel's and
Gambino's can both be found online and both
ship overnight for around $35. Expensive, yes, but
worth it.
The Going Out Gurus: King cakes online...
Washington, DC:
Tell these loosers to lay off the French. French girls are hot.
The Going Out Gurus: Indeed!
Panda in a Glass:
I would mix hot coffee with a strong hit of Jack Daniels. Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The ice cream will stay on top and rapidly melt. Serve with a black licorice stick.
That is surely a drink fit for a panda.
The Going Out Gurus: Damn. That sounds great. Just add a sweet potato or carrot garnish ...
French restaurant:
I am French and these are the places I would recommend (The food Bistrot du Coin isn't good):
- Le gaulois in Old Town Alexandria
- Petits plats in Woodley Park
- Lavandou in Cleveland Park
- Montmartre in Eastern Market
- Chez Antoine (really cheap) in Adams Morgan
Bon appetit !!
The Going Out Gurus: Thank you, mon ami(e).
22102:
Need a suggestion for date night...What ought to follow going to the Hirshhorn, doing a little ice skating, getting some tapas, what ought to come next? Fiancee is afraid that we don't do "dates" anymore, and I'm afraid that I'm getting comfortable. Dancing would be great but I won't do Cafe Citron anymore. Big thanks in advance!!
The Going Out Gurus: How about dancing at Habana Village or Ortanique? Or, for a slight twist on the movie date, see "The Other Network" at Visions.
Glover Park, DC:
Hey GoGs,
With the recent nightclub fire tragedies, I noticed last weekend that Tom Tom was temporarily closed down from the fire inspector. Any idea when it'll reopen?
thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: They're hoping to get up and running by next weekend, but nothing is certain. I wouldn't be surprised if you see a lot more of this in the coming weeks. -- Fritz
Arlington, VA:
Can I give a shout-out to Mr. Rogers? Don't tell me I'm the only Gen-Xer on the chat who thinks the neighborhood will be less friendly without him.
I don't remember whether I've seen it plugged here before, but I think Grille 88 deserves a heads-up for concept as much as execution. Live piano music that doesn't come at, say, an all-you-can-eat brunch is somewhat of a rarity. And it's cool; I've been only once, but the pianist was soliciting requests and humored a pretty broad range of music. The happy hour is good (1/2 price on all beer, wine, rail drinks) but unfortunately the music didn't start till after. That would be just too cool - cheap drinks and live piano. Well, anyway, the place is Ikea-funky (literally) in decor, a cool idea, and worth checking out. Cheers!
The Going Out Gurus: You're not alone in loving Mr. Rogers, Arlington. He was a darling guy. But I'm not as committed to Grille 88 as you are. One "Cats" medley is too many and the I thought the food was fussy. But you've got Tom on your side. -- Kate
Austrian restaurant?:
Any of the GOGs been to an Austrian
restaurant in Ballston called Cafe
Tirolios? What do you know?
The Going Out Gurus: It's called Cafe Tirolo, and though I haven't been, it's run by the pople who used to own Cafe Monti in Alexandria which I loved. -- Alexa
RE: 9:30 last night:
I don't think The Roots were there.
I wouldn't even want to see The Roots now, that last album was wack.
Premo is God
The Going Out Gurus: You're right, they weren't supposed to be there and I was not paying attention in my response. But Phrenology being wack? What is wrong with people today? How can one love Premo but not Phrenology? Did you hear the DRUMS on that record? Straight b-boy ruggedness. Wack?!? *mumbles incoherently and backs away from the keyboard* - Rhome
The Going Out Gurus:
That's the chat and we're outta here. Thanks for the joys.
