The Going Out Gurus:
Happy Thursday everyone. Thue gurus are at it once again. What's new? Well, Anne's prepped our holiday guide and Jen is at the ready to help you score your Harry Potter tix. Joe's clocked in his Soundcheck or haven't you heard. Alexa's feeling a bit crusty today, but kindly managed to round up your best bets for turkey day. Kate and I (Maura) are practicing our cocktail French and Fritz is eager -- as always -- to spill on the new bar at Helix. And you? Let's hear it.
Arlington, Va.:
Hey Gurus, love your chat!
Can you suggest a good, reasonably priced restaurant near Warner Theater for tomorrow night. I'm going to go see "Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk" at 8 p.m. and wanted to eat beforehand.
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, we have this for your convenience -- a roundup of pre-theater eats. Since that was written, Cheff Geoff's has opened just around the corner and might be the perfectly casual spot you seek. -- Alexa
Ballston, VA:
I was wondering what restaurants, Georgetown in particular, would you recommend for Brunch on Sunday? What's the price range and what times do they serve until? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: With respect to serving times, brunch is brunch is brunch, Ballston. Few places serve before 10 and it's often a wrap by 3. Here are my suggestions: for big American breakfasts try the Daily Grill. It's eggs, omlettes, french toast, that if ordered as part of the "big breakfast" come with coffee, a huge warm cinnamon bun and fruit salads. This combo is enough for two, easily. Red Ginger has recently started serving Sunday brunch. I haven't been yet, but I can happily imagine starting my day with spicy shrimp. At the Austin Grill in upper Georgetown, huevos are warmed with chilis and tucked inside torillas. Make sure you don't wimp out on ordering the spiciest sausage. Lighter fare at Peacock Cafe like smoothies, smoked salmon and egg white omelets share their brunch menu with buttermilk pancakes and buff burgers. Good god, I'm hungry. -- Kate
Bethesda, MD:
Hello Gurus! Planning on taking a friend out to Polly Esther's to celebrate her 22nd birthday. What do you know about this place? Looking forward to cheezy fun, but what is the crowd like?? Thanks!!
The Going Out Gurus: We know it's tacky and cheezy, Polly Esther's can be fun in the right frame of mind. (One, apparently, that I'm never in.) The crowd is a mixed lot - bachelorettes, college students, folks who remember dancing to disco the first time around, military types, young professionals, you name it. Good luck. -- Fritz
Alexandria, Va.:
Hi Gurus. I am treating my boyfriend to his first theater experience -- a Tuesday night showing of "Les Mis" at National Theatre -- and he is treating me to dinner before the show. Can you recommend a nice, moderately priced restaurant that won't make us miss the opening curtain? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: For starters, take a look at Alexa's theater dining feature, which offers a few recommendations near the National. In terms of affordability, I also suggest Old Ebbit Grill (I've eaten there before National shows, and gotten there with time to spare) and, as Alexa said above, the new downtown Chef Geoff's, which is very close-by. Hopefully one of those will work for you and the man. Have fun. - Jen
Hogwarts Express:
I - like 100's of others - would like to see Harry Potter at the Uptown this weekend. What is the best way to reserve advanced tickets for one of the Saturday showings?
Love the chat!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey there, Hogwarts. I (Jen) suggest that you reserve tickets online. Try using fandango.com -- I've done so for Uptown shows and had great success. Looks like none of the shows are sold-out yet, so you shouldn't have trouble if you buy them today. Also, if you live near Cleveland Park, you could buy them the old-fashioned way -- at the box office.
Bartender of the month:
What happened to the bartender of the month feature? Did you scrap it just for this month or is it gone for good?
The Going Out Gurus: Huh? The Bartender of the Month feature is on the front page of the Bars and Clubs section, and has been since November 1. Are you not seeing it?
By the way, everyone, please send YOUR bartender of the month nominations to fritz.hahn@washingtonpost.com. I have to pick a new one by Thanksgiving, and I need your help. Thanks. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.:
Hi, hubby and I will be out toward Leesburg late Friday afternoon -- what is there either in that area or on the way back to D.C. in terms of dining? Nothing super fancy, but is there a great place to try, something new for us, does anyone know?
Thanks a lot!
The Going Out Gurus: Your best bet out in those parts is Lightfoot, though it might be nice to hear some more suggestions from the group. I don't get out that way too often. -- Alexa
U Street NW:
My friend and I want to go to a theater performance. We are looking for something non-mainstream, sort of like an Off-
Broadway style play. What can you recommend?
The Going Out Gurus: The first thing that comes to mind is "Bat Boy," which starts tonight at Studio. It got its start off-Broadway, and certainly qualifies as non-mainstream: it's a musical about a half man/half bat (hence, the title). Sounds like just the sort of thing you're seeking. -- Jen
Swinging Washington, D.C.:
So the bf has given a tentative agreement to try swing dancing. (After I threatened to go with a male friend)
So where do we head for lessons?
The Going Out Gurus: That depends, Washington. Do you want a place that has a one-hour introductory lesson at the beginning of the night, or to sign up for a series of lessons (usually 6/8 weeks)? If you just want to try it out, head for Glen Echo Park on Saturdays, Chevy Chase Ballroom on Fridays, or Zoots and Dolls (in Fairfax) on Fridays. All have live bands and a lesson an hour beforehand. Good for you, btw, in getting him to go. -- Fritz
Sterling, Va.:
Hey GOGs,
You never cease to amaze me with your knowledge of activities around this area, and I have an easy one for you. I am looking for a fun, festive tapas bar/restaurant in both Arlington and Alexandria. Somewhere that the sangria is flowing and the music is blasting. Any ideas?
-Chris
P.S. What's an average $$ for tapas at these places?
The Going Out Gurus: Chris, I must say I amaze myself and am glad you can see why. For tapas in Old Town, Las Tapas is the spot for you. Music, weekly flamenco and georgous little morsels to eat. Tapas, I find, is rarely that cheap and these are probably between $5 and $7 a pop. -- Alexa
Sugar High:
My sweater is covered in chunks of candy that were my victims on Halloween. So I realize two things, one being that I love candy and another being that I'm wearing a dirty sweater.
Any suggestions as to candy stores? I think I want to go load up on some sweet sweet confections.
The Going Out Gurus: Oooh, Sugar High. I like your sweet tooth, if not your dirty sweater. One of my faves is Periwinkle in Chevy Chase. Enjoy. -- Maura
Arlington, Va.:
Is the White House open for tours for individuals? I heard it was just groups.
The Going Out Gurus: Just school groups, Arlington, sorry to say. -- MM
Washington, D.C.:
Hi GOG.
My boyfriend will be visiting from Atlanta. Ideas for us for the weekend -- we are already planning on Art-o-Matic. He's thinking about moving up here and I'd like him to get a feeling for D.C. as my hometown, not the Big City. I'm at Dupont so we've done that to death. We are old hippies, not 20-somethings.
The Going Out Gurus: Have you taken him to buy cider (and eat crabcakes) at Eastern Market yet? It's just terrific way to spend a weekend morning -- as is a hike at Great Falls. Have you gone for a walk in the grounds of the US Arborteum? It's a quiet oasis with a few surprises (like original White House columns). But there are many lovely (even at this time of the year) gardens. Do you think he'll miss grits and gravy? Breakfast at Ben's or Florida Avenue Grill (not open Sundays) or Colorado Kitchen. Has he seen the Bonnard show at the Phillips Collection. Having this on your doorstep makes me fall in love with your neighborhood. Does he need a place to watch his favorite NFL team? Even "old hippies" have a skeleton or two, no? Here's a list too. The State Theatre books a fair amount of jam bands, and Iota is cozy and folky. I highly recommend taking in a show from the restaurant side of the bar. -- Kate
Washington, D.C.:
Any tips for places in upper NW (Dupont, Cleveland Park, Van Ness, Friendship Heights) that serve really good desserts (no cheesecake) after 10 p.m.?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. Maura here. Late night dessert has the gurus thinking Tryst, but maybe some readers want to take a bite of this one.
Arlington, Va.:
I was hoping you would have the inside scoop on Home nightclub. I hear it is scheduled to open soon and that it is located near Platinum. Is it taking the place of what I think is called The Volt? (used to be Babylon)? Any thoughts on whether it is worth checking out?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Of course we have it, Arlington. Home should be worth checking out, as it has a group of experienced promoters behind it, a cool design firm (division One, I'm told), and a nice little four-floor space on the happening part of F Street. (Yes, it used to be the Vault AND Babylon.) The grand opening has been pushed back a few times, but rumor has it the club will open around Thanksgiving. Keep watching this space. -- Fritz
Gaithersburg, Md.:
So, where is a place that will cook my -ahem- "chopped steak" RARE, the way I like it?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Gaithersburg, we had a burger cooked exactly to order at Clyde's just this week. You sound as if you are have some difficulty getting your meat to your liking? -- Alexa
Falls Church, Va. :
For Leesburg diner:
Last year I met my dad for dinner at the restaurant at the Old Dominion Brewery out somewhere around Ashland/Toll Road. It was pretty good! It's in an industrial park, so it can't claim atmosphere, but it was worth the trip.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for this.
Virginia:
Best place a girl with dark hair can get her hair colored/highlighted? Cheaply?
The Going Out Gurus: This is a good question for the group, Virginia: Anyone have a recommendation?
I'll admit that when I was inspired by an article in Allure magazine for some highlights about three weeks ago: I took I went a little darker and it's pretty okay if I do say so myself. And it's $7 a box.
Re: Thanksgiving guide:
Parents are coming into town for Thanksgiving, and thanks to your guide, I booked reservations at the Tabard Inn. Menu looks great, and looking forward to it. Many thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: I have a hunch I know this little voice. Happy to please, JH.
Hogwarts stuck at the station?:
I just tried fandango and they say there are no more tix available for Saturday showings. Does that mean Fandango has more tix and if I show up at the box office I might have better luck?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) just tried fandango, and it looked like some remained for the 10:15, but maybe not. I suspect the tickets are sold out for most, if not all of Friday or Saturday, (Kate just said she passed by the Uptown, and a sign indicated as much). You can try calling the Uptown to make sure, but otherwise, start looking into other shows, or tickets for next weekend.
Arlington, Va.:
Fritz, been looking for that roundup of hotel bars you said you might put together. Any progress? (No pressure -- I had just mentioned it to a friend who is new in town and asked about this phenomenon.)
Speaking of which, got turned away from Poste last Friday night because they were closing (not because we looked like bums or anything, we didn't) and I think it was before midnight (too bad -- looked cool and Zola was swamped). Kinda early, dontcha think? Then Saturday headed over to Le Bar at about 11:30 and it was d-e-a-d. Nobody there but some drunk, loud baby boomers -- Yikes. Oversaturation in the swank hotel bar market perhaps? What gives?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. Check back tomorrow -- it's had one edit and should be on the Bars and Clubs page soon. Helix is missing, because I've only been once, and I'm giving it a chance.
Poste and the other Kimpton group hotels close early sometimes because they also serve brunch, etc., and there's some law about how many hours a day they can stay open if they're serving alcohol. But I agree, it's a shame and on a weekend, I'd rather be there than at Zola, which has one of the worst layouts around for people who have to stand at the bar.
As for Le Bar, well, it's packed after work and not at night. I'll put that down to location, really. As for oversaturation, well, I was at both Topaz ahnd Rouge last night (for a booksigning and a birthday, respectively) and they were crowded. Le Bar's just not as happening as some of the other hotel bars. -- Fritz
Dupont, Washington, D.C.:
Fritz! Spill on the new bar at Helix!
The Going Out Gurus: I did, a little. But the drink - called the Sidekick, because it's basically a Sidecar with a bit of Grand Marnier added - was kinda full at the time.
Alexandria, Va.:
Just looking for somewhere to listen to live music tomorrow night. Want a small bar, relaxed kind of thing, not the 9:30 club-type experience. Any kind of music really.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Alexandria,
this is Joe and since you don't care what kind of music it is, here are a few options: You could see singer-songwriter Graham Colton at Iota. There's also a guitarist and singer named Daniel Lee who supposed to be pretty good and will be playing at Jammin Java in Vienna. The Cowboy Cafe South also has live music. Call over and ask them who'll be playing. Galaxy Hut in Arlington has live (mostly indie rock) music every night. Or try Half Moon BBQ in Silver Spring (mostly country stuff.)
Alexandria, Va.:
Re: Harry Potter at the Uptown. Tix for all shows on both Friday and Saturday are sold out.
The Going Out Gurus: All right, kids, I just talked to the nice ticket lady at the Uptown. All the shows on Friday night and Saturday are sold-out, except for the 10:15 on Saturday. And half of those are gone. So get moving if you want a pair. -- Jen
Re: Brunch in Georgetown:
I have to suggest Martins Tavern as the best place to brunch in Georgetown. That place has the best eggs benedict I've ever had -- not to mention a cozy atmosphere.
The Going Out Gurus: Do you?
Arlington, Va.:
Looking for places (other than the obvious Les Halles and French Embassy) that will be pouring beaujolais nouveau next Thursday. Can any of the francophiles help out? Have a group of friends who have never experienced this wine outside of my house and I thought it would be fun to be out and about with the masses! Thanks for your help! You keep me from becoming a boring suburban wife!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. I just did a quick roundup on Beaujolais Nouveau and, in the process of calling, found that a lot of places aren't doing anything special. Grapeseed, Mon Ami Gabi and Montmarte, for example, will be pouring it, but not having a party. Mon Ami Gabi will have a special menu, they said, Thursday through Sunday, with Beaujolais Nouveau featured, but to be honest, I'd rather not pay for the wine. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C. cubicle:
Hey Gurus! I heard that Celia Cruz is giving a free concert on Saturday at Constitution Hall. Can't find any info on it (start time, tickets, etc.). Can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC, this is Joe and yes, Celia Cruz and Kevin Ceballo are playing a free show at Constitution Hall on Saturday, but you need tickets. The show begins at 8 p.m. For more info on tickets, call 202-393-4300 or 202-628-4780.
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.:
Loved my first trip to the Art-O-Matic. Thanks for the recommendation. Are any of the performers this weekend worth a return visit? I see they have bands and theater groups, but don't know who they are.
The Going Out Gurus: Well, A.M. I'm going to see the Assrockers tomorrow night because a) they rock and b) my friend's band is opening. This little-known, little-heard group is called The Vague and they fight specificity.
One of the indie films screening on Friday is the vastly over-hyped "Washington Interns Gone Bad." It is notable only for it's sheer persistency.
On Saturday night, there's improv from 7:30 - 10:30 and a not-to-be-missed doc called "Waiting for Jar-Jar" about the dorkwads who camped out for "Episode One." Full disclosure, this short film was honored by the SciFi Channel is the child of LOL producer Meredith Bragg. Saturday is "Ladies Night" with Villa Rosie and Sarah Azzara playing and LadyFest shorts on the bill too.
-- Kate
Harry Potter, part II:
We already have tickets for the Saturday 6 p.m. show at the Uptown. What time should we show up to get in line for a decent seat?
Thanks a bunch.
The Going Out Gurus: Get there at least an hour in advance, even earlier if you're very picky about your seats. For a movie like this, I expect people to line up with plenty of time to spare. (Though, as I did while waiting to see "Star Wars," I would not expect to see light saber fights while standing on Connecticut Ave. Then again, you never know.) -- Jen
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
When will be places be announcing their plans for New Year's Eve? Do you have any recommendations for something in D.C.?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, New Year's seekers. Here's our Holiday Guide, which will fill up with more New Year's events, especially in early December. Mouse over the "On the Town" part of the toolbar to find info on events. Here's what Fritz has been talking up so far: 1) a rumor that there might be a joint party between Helix, Rouge and Topaz (more details forthcoming, of course), and 2) a $30 party at VIP that includes a bottle of champagne and a VIP card for a year. Advance tickets go on sale Nov. 18. For Alexandria, looking for a romantic alternative to the Kennedy Center, our feature on New Year's Eve dinner specials will come soon. I (Anne) know that Ardeo, for one, often does up a special menu for holidays.
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.:
My in-laws go out more than my husband and I do -- it puts us to shame. They see an average of two plays a weekend, usually at places like the Source, Woolly Mammoth, etc. They go to the theater festival in Sheperdstown ever summer. They belong to the Skeptic's Society and go to all its events. They go to classical music concerts. They like eating out. Etc. So here's my question: with the holidays coming up, what's the perfect gift for a couple that just likes to go out and do stuff? They've said they really don't need any more -things- (for their house, etc.) so we'd really like to give them a creative going-out gift. Any ideas other than restaurant gift certificates?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Adams Morgan. I think a season subscription or gift certificate to a local theater would be perfect for your in-laws. Sounds like they dig Source and Woolly Mammoth -- do they already have subscriptions there? If so, look into some of the theaters they don't visit as often -- maybe Arena or Signature or Round House. Some places may have sold out of their season passes already, but could probably still hook you up with a gift certificate or something. Poke around on our theater page and see what interests you, then make some calls. Good luck -- and tell your in-laws the gurus say they are way cool. -- Jen
Arlington, Va.:
Hey Gurus,
I hope you can help. I'm planning a going-away night out for a friend and I need a meeting place to start the evening. The spec are: Adams Morgan, starting about 8:30-10:30, relatively cheap beer, casual but not a total dive, 10-20 people can talk comfortably but not be the only people in the place. I'm thinking maybe Brass Monkey or Toledo Lounge. Your thoughts? Thanks so much!
The Going Out Gurus: I'd probably rule those two out immediately, because there's no way you'll be able to sit/talk together on a Friday night. Um, what about upstairs at Tom Tom? That's kind of spacious, and usually not packed early in the evening. -- Fritz
Mt Pleasant's gotta go shoppin...:
OK, tis the season for consumption...what is the liquor store that's closest to the White House and sells booze that proclaims so on the label? I know it's been mentioned, but I couldn't find it through the archives and I think it's a nifty holiday gift idea for out-of-town friends.
The Going Out Gurus: Sure, it's McReynold's (1776 G Street, NW) that is and sells "closest liquor store to the White House." In truth, it's unremarkably blah booze, but it does make a great gift. Hope I'm on your list. --Kate
Re: Virginia Hair Coloring::
Graham Webb has a hair school in Rosslyn where they do cuts, full color, and highlighting. I know full highlights are $40 and partial are $25. I've been going there since I decided that paying $150 for highlights is ridiculous and I can't even tell the difference.
The Going Out Gurus: Oh, great suggestion, thanks!
Washington, D.C.:
Blind date update from the girl who submitted last week.
Date was comically awful. Mitigated by the fact that he had NO MORE THAN 12 teeth.
Thanks friends for thinking so highly of me? Wouldn't you think that would be something you would tell in advance if you were my friend setting us up? I think I need new ones.
The Going Out Gurus: New friends or new teeth?
Alexandria, Va.:
For the girl looking to get color/highlights, I'd suggest PR and Partners in Old Town Alexandria. They have always done an excellent job on my hair, as well as my friends. And several of us have jet black hair.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Alex. I have a friend who swears by PR and Partners. But how much do highlights cost? -- Kate
Beaujolais:
What's y'alls' plans for the Beaujolais next week?
And Fritz, how do you suggest I clear my hangover on Thursday morning?
The Going Out Gurus: 1. Drink loads of wine. Either Les Halles or Bistrot du Coin, as they're both free and giving away FREE WINE. (How can you say no?)
2. Have loads of water during the night, in between alcoholic drinks. I know that helps, but I don't always remember to do it. -- Fritz
Bartender of the month:
I don't know the guy personally, but, Fritz, I've got to object to your choice of bartender of the month. At Soussi, I asked him for a Manhattan, up, and I got a snifter of warm whisky with a cherry. When I pointed out that my drink should have at least been cold, he poured it, cherry and all, over ice and shook it quite violently. I then decided to switch to beer.
Incidentally, it was NOT busy.
The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm. That's odd. Okay, so who's YOUR favorite bartender? Let's find someone who does Manhattans up with a smile.
Georgetown, Washington, D.C.:
Ballston Brunch: Don't bypass Papa Razzi at Wisconsin and M for brunch! It's ALL good but try the stuffed crepes with raisins, cherries and a light marzipan coating! The staff is great and the menu is diverse! Happy face stuffing!
The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like one to look forward to. Thanks, DC.
Gaithersburg, Md.:
Yes, Alexa, some kinda health dept regs apparently require the burger ('scuse me, the chopped steak) to be cooked to 4000 degrees for 30 minutes -- a bit beyond rare. I'll give Clyde's a try. Wait a minute -- where is Clyde's?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: 4000 degrees. Wow. Didn't know. Clyde's.
Washington, D.C.:
Can you give me some ideas for a great place to host my birthday party in early December?
The Going Out Gurus: Washington, more details, please. What kind of place are you looking for? In the meantime, check out our party sites feature. -- Maura
Date night in Gaithersburg, Md.:
I am so excited! For the first time in three kids and five and a half years, my husband and I are going on a date this Tuesday, just the two of us. We want to do dinner and a movie -- what can you suggest? Given that we'll be paying the sitter $10/hour, it can't be too expensive or too far away.
What movies are out that are good for a first date? Nothing too cute or too violent, please.
Any decent restaurants that are relaxing but not $$$$? Not the Outback or any other national chains, please.
It's been so long, we really don't know what's out there anymore. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
The Going Out Gurus: Gaithersburg, promise me you won't ever wait this long for another evening out. Promise? All right, good.
You could go to the Rio, but most of the restaurants near there are chains. Since this is your first time out in ages, I (Jen) say venture to Bethesda, which is a little far but not too far. See a movie at the Landmark Cinemas -- I highly recommend "Punch-Drunk Love," which is weird, wonderful and twistedly funny. But if you and hubby aren't so much into weird, you could also see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" or "Roger Dodger," both of which also are playing there and should be solid choices. As far as dinner, there are numerous options nearby, but I recommend Mon Ami Gabi (very close to the theater), Jaleo, Raku or Levante's. Enjoy yourselves, Gburg.
Washington, D.C.:
Zatinya -- your thoughts, comments? We're thinking about doing a friend's birthday there next Wednesday -- is it like Jaleo where you order lots of tapas (Greek for Tapas?) and share? Also, do you think we'd need reservations? Thanks, you guys are the greatest!
The Going Out Gurus: A perfect idea for a birthday. Zaytinya is like Jaleo, where you order small plates to share. I (Anne) tried for reservations on Election Night and was told they didn't take them after 6:30. My guess if that if you go early in the week, you'll be okay. The space is immense.
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.:
For the dessert freak, check out La Fourchette. Outstanding profiteroles, floating island, blah, blah, blah.
The Going Out Gurus: Don't you mean iles flottantes.
Cubicle Girl:
Can you recommend a good place for brunch around the National Cathedral? We're going there on Sunday for the service to celebrate Texans. Gotta love the Lone Star State!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello CG, well for the least hassle, just go across the street and up a block to Cafe Deluxe. They do a pretty good brunch, but it's always crowded. Maybe you should celebrate Texas at Cactus Cantina instead. If you don't mind a bit of a walk after church, you can take a nice long walk down Mass Ave to Dupont and get brunch at Kramerbooks (yeah, it's an obvious choice). Any one else want to recommend a place?
Arlington, Va.:
Hey,
Question that I've been kicking around for a while before throwing it out to you.
What are some places in North Arlington that serve food late at night?
I often find myself either heading home late on a weeknight and wanting dinner at 10 or 11, or heading home on weekends at 1 or 2, after going out but wanting a bite to eat before going to bed. There are so many good restaurants on the Wilson Boulevard corridor or Lee Highway, but I don't know ones that are open late.
I'm thinking cheap and yummy -- could be most anything otherwise. Vace-style pizza or gyros and the like would be ideal. Preferably North Arlington, anything further out than Falls Church would not fit the bill.
Here's one suggestion that isn't in the Entertainment Guide: Tandoori Kebab House near Ballston metro is a great Indian greasy spoon-type place, that stays open till at least 12 weeknights, often till 2 on weekends. It's basically across Glebe from the Harris Teeter, in an old Roy Rogers (?) It would be an easy walk from the metro. Their chickpeas and spinach always hit the spot, but I'm looking to branch out. Mario's Pizza on Wilson near Clarendon is okay in a pinch, but the pizza is nothing delicious. Maybe I need to try the sandwiches.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Cheers!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. I like the Route 29 Diner on Lee Highway (just south of Glebe Road, I think), or, if you're going into South Arlington, Bob and Edith's for greasy essentials.
Anyone else got late night noshing tips for Arlington? -- Fritz
Arlington, Va.:
Got any rainy day suggestions for Saturday? Entertaining the folks in from out of town. Spy Museum worth the effort?
The Going Out Gurus: On a rainy day, I might forgo the wait. If it's anything like recent weeks, you'll be in line an hour or more. If the parents haven't been, try the nearby Building Museum or walk down to the National Gallery and wait on the Spy Museum for now. -- Maura
Re: Tapas in Arlington/Alexandria:
Don't care for Las Tapas all that much. Their patatas bravas aren't quite right. I have more fun at Toro tapas (when they're "on," they're on, when they're off... well.. it's OK). Plus, Toro is a great palce to eat before catching a movie at Shirlington, which shows better (read: "smaller") movies than most theatres.
If this person is hauling their behind all the way from Sterling I think they ought to go for the gusto and head to Jaleo. No point messing around.
Another fun option along these lines is Zaytinya for mezze, same folks that run jaleo except the bent here is turkish-greek. Mmmm.
Also, I think of tapas as being inexpensive. Yes -- can be $5-$7 a pop, BUT if everyone picks two or three and shares, plus a couple pitchers of sangria, I usually find it a cheaper dining option.
The Going Out Gurus: Whatever.
Harry Potter Fans:
You got nothing on "Lord of the Rings." Bring it!
The Going Out Gurus: Honestly, I (Jen) am not sure too many Harry Potter fans would argue with you. I mean, Chris Columbus vs. Peter Jackson? It's not even a fair fight.
When the next Potter, to be directed by Alfonso Cuaron, comes out, I may revisit that opinion. Potter-lovers, anyone care to cast a spell on this instigator?
Reston, Va.:
Looking for fun Italian dinner spot in D.C. Anyone ever eaten at Vivo! in DuPont? Anything good or bad to say?
The Going Out Gurus: Only good. Tom Sietsema loved Vivo, and I (Anne) did too, last time I was there. The fun to be found is in the romance, the indulgence, the coziness.
Mt. Pleasant, Washington, D.C.:
Hi Gurus!
My best girlfriend is coming out for a long weekend from Albuquerque, and I am just thrilled! She's a mom of two kids, both under 5, and this is the first time she's ever left them for an entire weekend home alone with the hubby. I've got us scheduled for some time at a day spa, drinks at Poste and dinner at Jaleo, and a trip to the National Museum for Women in the Arts -- any other suggestions to help my friend enjoy the adult life of a big east coast city?
Thanks a bunch!
The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like you've got plans already, and really good ones at that. Your friend will be able to tell you if she doesn't have time for things like browsing in bookstores for herself or shopping for herself. A walk through Georgetown up Wisconsin Avenue stopping at places like Proper Topper and Mint Juleps and A Mano? Just a chance to walk and talk will be fun. -- Kate
Gaithersburg:
What is this Art-o-Matic place? Everyone is always mentioning it, but I have never been. What's it's story??
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Gaithersburg. Art-O-Matic is a grass roots exhibition of local artists and performers. Along with hundreds of visual artists, there are bands, poetry slams, films and more. Oh, I'll stop rattling on, read more about it right here. It's worth a visit. -- Maura
Re: The new Holiday Guide:
I just clicked on some of the links and they didn't work -- it said "error occured while processing this request."
Thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for letting us know. What browser are you using? That will help us figure out why you're having trouble.
Washington, D.C.:
Can you recommend any Chicago-style blues in the area?
The Going Out Gurus: Hmm, this is Joe and I can't think of any Chicago-style blues in the area. Can anyone help with that. If you get a chance though, check out bluesman Bobby Parker at Madam's Organ on Saturday night.
Dupont, Washington, D.C.:
Okay, Fritz. Smarty pants. Spill ABOUT the new bar at Helix!
The Going Out Gurus: Ohhhhh. Right. Um, it's new, so there's no review up yet (I have to go a few more times), but it's shaping up to be my favorite of all the Kimpton hotels. Much more spacious than Rouge or Topaz, with tons of little alcoves on the sides of the room, lights that slowly shift colors, and good bartenders. There's an interesting cocktail list (naturally) with a junipertini (vodka with blue-cheese-stuffed olives) as well as the Sidekick. The food is traditional Americana with a twist - my favorite appetizer is the plate of mini-corn dogs. -- Fritz
Out of It Guy:
I know this is a Going Out chat, but do sitters really make 10 bucks an hour these days? Heck, when I was a kid 25 years ago, my sisters were lucky to get a buck an hour. No wonder those folks rarely get out.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, OOIG, I've seen it with my own two eyes. Maybe we should try staying in and earning some extra cash.
Alexandria, Va.:
Hello all,
Can you tell me where one could do some indoor rock climbing in the Northern Virginia area?
Thanks guys, you're great.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Alexandria. You want SportRock II in ... Alexandria.
Georgetown Brunch:
I actually really like having brunch at the Tomb's -- I'm there for brunch almost every Sunday in the colder months. I'm a Georgetown alum, so I'm biased, but I think they have a pretty good menu and a decent Bloody Mary (and, really, what's more important than that?).
The Going Out Gurus: I haven't been to the Tombs for ages. Thanks for the refresher. Fritz is our BM expert. In Georgetown, he likes them at Sign of the Whale. -- Kate
Hair Highlights:
I just got my hair highlighted at Hair Color Xpress in Cleveland Park. It was kinda pricey because I have long hair and got my whole head done, but if you just wanted face framing I think it runs about $20 and if you want partial, the cost is about $50. Just throwing it out there.
The Going Out Gurus: Ooh, Anne and I are supa-intregued by this new comer. Thanks for the tip, HH. -- Kate
To Gaithersburg, Mde.:
To the person going on her first date in five years with her husband:
Monday-Thursday at the California Tortilla in Rockville, next to the Regal Cinemas, they offer a movie deal. Burrito, drink, and a movie ticket for $10.99. While it is not the most romantic thing, it's definitly cheap. My boyfriend and I go probably three times a month and always have fun.
The Going Out Gurus: Gaithersburg, DON'T DO THIS. While it's awfully nice to offer a suggestion, we gurus panic at the thought of California T. as the first date in five years.
Washington, D.C.:
Going to see a concert at the National Academy of Sciences on Sunday, and wondered where to meet nearby for drinks/food either before or after the 3 p.m. show. NAS is at 550 5th Street, NW.
The Going Out Gurus: Bistro Bis in the Hotel George could suit you well.
Warnings for the Samba and Beaujolais crowd:
Bistrot du Coin was lined up around the block last year, there was no way to get in at midnight, AND IT IS MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY, that the first bottle gets opened.
Ticketplace has given away all of the Celia Cruz tics. (Now, won't you please help me find a good venue for afternoon or early evening acoustic music and a good place (or instructor) for wood carving for beginners?)
The Going Out Gurus: Yes. I like to think it was packed because I wrote a big story about the free wine in the Weekend section the week before, but also, no one EVER heeds warnings about arriving early for events. So, naturally, everyone showed up at 11, and couldn't get in. Same thing at Les Halles. (BTW, dancing and DJs start around 10:30 at both places.) Friends and I went to BdC, and we got in at 9:30 with no problems.
Too bad about Celia Cruz tickets. I would have loved to have gone to that.
As for wood carving, I'll toss that one out to the crowd. Anyone? -- Fritz
Les Halles:
Fritz,
So you're sayin I finally get to consume alcohol with my drinking hero!
We have a reservation there for 4 at 11:30 p.m.
The Going Out Gurus: Sorry. I (and like 10 friends) have reservations at Bistrot du Coin on Wednesday. But Les Halles throws a good party, too. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.:
Dear Gurus,
I have two friends visiting me the following weekend (Nov. 16, 17), one of whom is a strict vegetarian. Can you suggest some (more upscale than downscale) restaurants that feature interesting veggie food on a menu that also caters to the carnivores in the group? No Indian or Italian, please. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, DC. I'd recommend Nora or Asia Nora, Local 16, and, believe it or not, Georgia Brown's -- she's very thoughtful for vegetarians. -- Anne
Virginia:
Hey -- you guys forgot to mention the Festival of Thanksgiving at the Arlington Farmers Market. Cooking demos, cook book signing and more. Should be fun -- I found out about it through their Web site.
The Going Out Gurus: How could we forget, VA. Our own Kim O'Donnel will be whipping up some delicious dish in her own demo. Stop in and tell her how much you love the gurus.
Washington, D.C.:
Is the Dame Edna show coming to the National Theatre in January 2003 appropriate for families (kids ages 8, 11)? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: I'm not positive, but from what I've heard, it's a family-appropriate show. Of course, that's always a subjective thing. The show has been touring, so you might look around on the Web for past reviews if you're very concerned.
To the Lord of the Rings fan:
It's be brought! -snap-
The Going Out Gurus: Yeah! What he/she said!
Woodley Park, Washington, D.C.:
Hi Gurus. My friend and I feel like the last single and straight ones standing, as most of our friends seem to be pairing off. In honor of our single-ness, we are planning a night out. We're always out at Reef, Tom Tom, Brass Monkey in Adams Morgan and Garrett's, Thirds and Smith Point (ugh) in Georgetown. Where is somewhere new where we'll find fun, 20-something people?
The Going Out Gurus: Okay, Woodley. Always glad to help a neighbor out. You need a complete change of scene. Try hitting some of the hotel bars (Rouge, Topaz, Helix), maybe Zola, go out swing dancing at Chevy Chase Ballroom, try other Adams Morgan places like Chief Ike's or Stetson's. Stay away from Georgetown. I'm sure other people want to weigh in. -- Fritz
Bethesda, Md.:
What do you think of Raku-Asian dining on Woodmont? Can it host a party of 10?
The Going Out Gurus: I say yes, Bethesda. Just call Raku ahead of time and make a reservation. It might be easier to pick a time a little earlier or later in the evening. -- Maura
Washington, D.C.:
For the person looking for woodcarving -- there are a bunch of woodcarvers at Art-O-Matic. You should go by the space and pick up one of their cards and ask if they give lessons or who they know who gives lessons.
The Going Out Gurus: Washington, you're good. Thanks.
Washington, D.C.:
First date, two Sinatra lovers -- any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Felix on Wednesday night, with Eric Felton's Orchestra for Sinatra Night. The upstairs bar at Oceanaire. Next Thursday, live swing music at Timpano in Rockville (they have a framed picture of the Chairman over the fireplace). -- Fritz
K Street, Washington, D.C.:
Hello Friends!
I'm thinking of going to the Art-O-Matic. Question: Is there a bar to buy drinks from?
Also, loved the food and atomosphere at Zatinya, but the service is SLOW.Just take the experience with a grain of salt and maybe a shot of ozio and you'll do fine.
Thanks GOGs!
The Going Out Gurus: K Street, no fear, there is a bar at Art-O-Matic.
Penn Quarter, Washington, D.C.:
I am interested in taking a cooking class this winter. Any suggestions on where to start my search?
The Going Out Gurus: PQ, chew on our list of cooking classes. -- MM
Tea for Two, Washington, D.C.:
What do you know about some of the places for high tea in Old Town? I walked by one of the restaurants (can't remember the name) and it looked packed and fun.
The Going Out Gurus: They used to do a posh tea at a posh price at the Morrison House Hotel. Give them a call. It's a nice occasion, if a touch stiff. The British Connection and Tea Cosy (also stiff) is there too. Was it either of those? -- Alexa
Silver Spring, Md.:
Hi all. Have you been to the spa at Hotel Hershey in Pensylvania? If yes, how is it? I'd like to take my mother there this spring.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, SS. I (Anne) have stayed and dined at Hotel Hershey, so I can tell that the service is kind and attentive, and the restaurants offer some of the best food in the region. I think the spa (haven't been there, though) is best known for its chocolate mud wrap and chocolate milk bath, so if that sounds like a delightful sensory overload to you, go for it.
Washington, D.C.:
Where can a gal find a good frisbee golf course around here? Frisbee golf is, I'm sure you know, the next up-and-coming extreme sport. Bone-crushing disc throwing and goals that offer no mercy. Extreeeeeme. I'm looking for a course that's set among a few trees and designed for capable, but far from professional, players. Any ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC, this is Joe and though I play ultimate I don't really know about any frisbee golf courses in the area. I think there's one at Bull Run Regional Park. By the way, I've never heard frisbee golf described as an extreme sport. Most of the people I know play it with a beer in one hand and the disc in the other. Can anyone help with this one?
Date Tonight!:
Help! I have a date tonight at 7. (I'm picking her up in Rosslyn.) Would like to find a fun, cool sushi place on the Orange Line (Rosslyn/Clarendon) or near Foggy Bottom/Dupont Circle. Someplace where it's not so packed that you can't have a conversation. And afterwards, a chill, lounge/jazzy place or bar with no cover for hanging out. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Okay... there's Cafe Asia in Rosslyn, which is always fun and bustling (and there's happy hour until 7:30), although it works for dates. There's Atami in Clarendon, which has good sushi but gets mixed reviews. Afterwards, head for Gua-Rapo at Courthouse for drinks. Howzat? -- Fritz
Dear Hobbit and Hogwart fans:
Get with a real franchise:
Bond, James Bond.
The Going Out Gurus: See, look what you've done. First it's the Bond fans. Next, the "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" people are going to get all riled up. And that's never pretty, ladies and gentlemen.
Washington, D..C:
Not only is there a bar at Art-O-Matic, but tonight from 6-8 there is a speciall happy hour serving drinks and short films.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we like long on drinks, short on films.
Alexandria, Va.:
Dear Gurus,
I am in desperate need of your help. I am going to meet with a girl I have never met before this Saturday. The event we were going to do got canceled, and I have no idea what to do or where to meet her at. We would probably be meeting somewhere in the early afternoon. Maybe somewhere in D.C. And due to the fact that it looks like it is going to rain I think it would be good if we could be indoors.
Any ideas? Please help!
Thanks,
Desperate
The Going Out Gurus: What about going to see a movie and then grabbing a bite to eat afterwards. "8 Mile" and tapas at Las Tapas, Romeo?
Dessert :
Kramerbooks has WONDERFUL desserts! Huge brownie sundaes, the works. And open very late!
Got a big ol' chocolate chip cookie at Tryst earlier in the week that was yummy, but I wouldn't exactly call the place a dessert destination. In fact I think someone could make a lot of money by opening an ice cream parlor/dessert place on 18th Street.
The Going Out Gurus: The sweet stuff.
Bartenders of the month?:
My choice would be the entire staff of Bedrock. Where else can you go after a four-month hiatus, where you never were a REGULAR-regular in the first place, and the bartender looks at you, smiles and says, "Guinness, right?" LOVE that.
They also take mighty fine care of the ladies. They really keep an eye out for inappropriate male customer behavior and make we ladies feel quite safe.
The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, they're rad. Love them all. (I'm a regular too, btw.) Brian Harrison was bartender of the month at Bedrock last September, though - before he left to open the Reef, and we're trying to put AT LEAST a one-year break between people from the same bars.
-- Fritz
Georgetown, Washington, D.C.:
Dear all knowing Gurus,
When the heck is the huge new movie theatre in Georgetown opening? The Metro posters keep saying the fall, but I feel the days are running short!
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, it does seem we've been waiting for ages, doesn't it? It was supposed to open this month, but due to some construction delays, I (Jen) am now hearing closer to Christmas. When it does open, we'll certainly have all the show times and the lowdown on what the place is like, don't you worry.
Manhattans up, with a smile!:
At the Willard Intercontinental -- the round robin bar. Best Manhattan I've had for a while.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes indeed. Jim Hawes, right? I love the Round Robin. Off the Record, too.
Washington, D.C.:
Where is Helix?
And, uhm, yeah, babysitters make more than they did 25 years ago. Don't most jobs?
The Going Out Gurus: Helix is at 1430 Rhode Island NW, about a block up from 15 Ria and Bar Rouge.
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.:
For frisbee golf, there is a fantastic course at the Patapsco State Park in Maryland (near Ellicot City). Also, there is a smaller one in College Park near the University of Maryland.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Cap Hill.
Single and Straight:
I think Madhatters brings in a good crowd. Not a great place to chat, but I always have fun and end up meeting people. Same at Lucky Bar. Love that hotel bars are getting big. Desperately trying to find someplace to become a regular, and think I might just find myself a great hotel bar to call my own.
The Going Out Gurus: I agree about Lucky and the Hatter. Friends of mine love 'em, although I think they can get TOO packed and TOO noisy on weekends. And there's nothing like being a regular. I expect hotel bars need more of 'em. -- Fritz
Wasting Away in Cubeville:
Hi, Gurus. Love the chat and insights, as always!
My question is this: Although I've lived in and around the District for a good chunk of my life, it's been awhile (like fourth grade) since I did any kind of sightseeing. I'd like to do a tour, maybe a walking tour, that is in the funky vein. Not just the tourmobile. Any suggestions?
You guys rock. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Wasting Away, let's hope not. There's a U St. Walking Tour and DC Heritage Foundation holds many, although they might be a little dry for your taste. Try contacting the City Guild of the Washington Historical Society. It's a young members group that holds some off-the-mainstream tours every now and then. Check them out. -- Maura
Birthday Bound:
So it's finally my turn to ask the age old question: where to take my two friends for their birthdays this Saturday!?
OK, here's the criteria, lets see what you can come up with:
- Either in Adams Morgan, Midtown, or Georgetown preferred (maybe Bethesda too, since we live there).
- We are all poor, so definitely looking for some cheap drinks.
- Nothing pretentious, just a cool place to hang out. Someplace that we can all chat and not have to yell, yet still have a good amount of people to watch, etc.
- Good music is a plus.
- Places we usually go to include Lucky Bar, Madhatters, Sign of the Whale, Whitlows and Clarendon Grill in Arlington, and that megaplex attached to Brass Monkey (surprisingly never really that fun even with five different bars to choose from). We're looking to try someplace new.
We were thinking of testing the waters at Asylum, or maybe Pharmacy Bar.
I hope you can work your magic on this one! Thanks GOGS!
The Going Out Gurus: Asylum is always fun, especially with $.25 beers on Saturday (starts at 6, though). It's not pretentious in the least and certainly has a different crowd than your usual places. Pharmacy is similar, although drinks are more expensive, and it fills up faster so you might have to yell. Have you considered Stetson's, Bedrock Billiards or Chief Ike's?
Washington, D.C.:
Hi guys and gals, is there any place for a young gay professional male in his early 20s can go for music and fun, besides totally gay places? What about something like the Black Cat or Soussi? Do they have mixed crowds?
The Going Out Gurus: Black Cat has more of a mixed crowd than Soussi.
Somewhere, USA:
Hello all -- I have the afternoon free tomorrow. I worked extra hours for it, I like getting away when others have to be in offices -- a kind of guilty pleasure I suppose. Any things I must see/do? I am really up for anything -- movies? Exhibits? Lunch? I have some ideas, but would appreciate the consult. What would you all be doing with a free Friday afternoon?
The Going Out Gurus: Congratulations, on your day off, Somewhere. Well, I (Anne) polled the crew, and here's our vision for our imaginary Friday afternoon off: do laundry, start holiday shopping, see 8 Mile, take a snooze, go out for tea (taking a book along), go to the Library of Congress or the Bonnard show at the Phillips, walk around Old Town or another neighborhood we haven't visited in a while, and go running amid the leaves in Rock Creek.
Baltimore, Md.:
Cool place for mojitos in Georgetown or Dupont Circle? Don't want frat bar but doesn't have to be cooler-than-thou 18th Street Lounge pretentious either.
The Going Out Gurus: Cafe Citron or Gabriel in Dupont, not sure about Georgetown. -- Fritz
The Going Out Gurus:
All right, we're spent. How about you? That's it for today. Thanks everyone. See you next week.
