Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

Today's discussion ended at 2:30. The transcript is below.

The Going Out Gurus: Hola, chicos y chicas. Welcome back for another edition of Got Plans?, the Live Online discussion that's filled with more action than an episode of "24." The gang's all here -- Alexa, Maura, Joe, Fritz, Rhome, Anne, Kate and me (Jen). We're looking at a nice weekend weather-wise, so we're sure you have lots of questions and ideas about how to spend that time in the sun. Fire when ready.

Carless in Washington, D.C.: My friends have challenged me to put my kitchen where my mouth is and make my mom's incredible Persian food for them. But I can't find a good Indian or Iranian market to buy the supplies. Do you have any ideas that are Metro friendly?

The Going Out Gurus: The very very best place to go, Careless, is Indian Spices & Gifts though I prefer to call it by its former name -- Indian Spice and Appliance which accurately refers to the electric tea kettles, hairdryers and such that it stocks upstairs. I suppose the closest Metro would be Ballston. Make a trip. It's so worth it, and so cheap. Anyone else recommend something? -- Alexa

Alexandria: GOG's,
A couple of friends are coming into town this weekend and I want to show them a good time, but I'm relatively new to the area. We want to go out in Adams Morgan on Friday and probably hit a few bars. What are some places that won't charge us a cover, other than Mille and Al's, Reef, Pharmacy Bar, and Common Share (that's all that I have been to)?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Alexandria: You forgot Adams Mill Bar and Grill, Asylum, Toldeo Lounge, Bedrock Billiards, Angles (another pool hall), Soussi, Chex Antoine (if you get there before midnight), Hell (the basement level of Heaven), Tom Tom, Peyote Cafe and Brass Monkey. Peyote has karaoke. You should know you have to arrive early to get into the Reef.

Oh, you can find reviews and details for all those locations here.

These days, I think, there are more free places in D.C. than those charging cover on a weekend. -- Fritz

Petworth, Washington, D.C.: Gurus --

Just a thank you for letting us know last week about "Lawrence of Arabia" at the Uptown.

I went to see it. It had been several years since I last saw it. The husband had never seen it. What an epic!

It really reminded us how glorious and LARGE a movie can be. So, everyone go see "Lawrence" at the Uptown! (It appears to be there this week, too.)

The Going Out Gurus: Glad you enjoyed it, Petworth. Yes, "Lawrence" is at the Uptown for another week. Then "Harry Potter" moves in, so catch it while you can. -- Jen

Your biggest fan: Can I give a suggestion for Friday evening?

LUNA at the BLACK CAT! GO. You will love them.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, you can give a suggestion. In fact, you just have.

Arlington: Hi Gurus- You guys are the best! My boyfriend and I are catching The Man of La Mancha at the National theater Saturday night- any restaurants you recommend nearby? Thoughts on Butterfield 9?? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, have a look at this little feature we did on pre-theatre eats. Butterfield 9's nice and they do a good deal for early eaters. -- Alexa

Washington, D.C.: I need some great casual/group quasi-date ideas for Friday and Saturday night, as I'd like to suggest that a girl come with me (and possibly some other friends), but I imagine she'll be a bit reluctant as she probably has about five different guys calling her and tends to hold out to the last minute and take the best offer. Dupont, Adams Morgan or anywhere downtown would be best. She's conservative but likes to party and also enjoys sports, etc. Any destination suggestions would be appreciated.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey DC, this is Joe and while we should probably get Carolyn Hax on the phone to answer this one, we'll give it a shot anyway. First of all, if she's got five guys after her and is just waiting for the best offer, forget about her. I mean, really, you don't need the kind of headache, do you?

Washington, DC: Where can you take a company of about 14 people, including the spouses, out for an evening for the holidays? Something different and unique - unlike the restaurant idea or theater idea.

The Going Out Gurus: Is bowling at Strike too physical? Walter Nichol's liked Stike's expansive menu. It's upper crusty-style, you know: hummus with calamari on the side laced with raspberry vinegrette, and it's a pretty slick place. It's been talked up a storm, so I'm sure thems that haven't been might be keen to see the place, and beat the boss. -- Kate

4th Floor Cubicle, Old Town: Hi -- Looking for a place with good wine and a light menu for drinks and dinner with some girlfrends tonight. Ideally somewhere between Cleveland Park and Adams Morgan... any suggestions? Thanks!

Also -- just my two cents -- I went to the Art-o-Matic last weekend and it was very cool. There's a lot to explore. I recommend it.

The Going Out Gurus: Old Town, Bardeo in Cleveland Park may be just what you're looking for. Other possibilities: Petits Plats or Lebanese Taverna. -- Maura

Washington, D.C.: Hey GoGs:

Do you all know any place in D.C. or Arlington that does beer tastings? Not a brewpub that offers a sample of all of their brews but a bar that does something more akin to a wine tasting. I though the Brickskellar might but I can't find any info. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. The Brickskeller is the best bet around here for beer tastings. They have one next week called "Ten Stouts of November" with Larry Bell of the Kalamazoo Brewing Company, which is always popular. Another one has been scheduled for December 18 and 19, which will showcase local seasonal beers, but I'm still waiting for more details on that one. -- Fritz

Montgomery Village, Md.: Hello Gurus,

What is the best place to dine before a show at the National on a Saturday evening? Price not a major concern. What about after the show? Also, do any of the restaraunts provide valet parking for the show?

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Monty, have a look at my above response to Arlington. there's a link up there to pre-theatre eats. Remember, too, that Chef Geoff's just opened around the corner. I'm not sure about valet. I suppose just ask when you call to book. -- Alexa

Arlington, VA: Which of you are the best-looking gurus? Come on guys and women, don't be shy!

The Going Out Gurus: We are all indescribably ugly. Even our parents say so.

Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: Okay, a Thanksgiving question, guys. My longtime friends are coming home for Tgiving and are visiting me. They hardly ever visit because their main complaint is that they can't stand D.C.'s attitude and there is not much they enjoy in D.C.(Though they hardly know the city). Now that I live in the city, I would like to go out somewhere where they'll feel somewhat comfortable and not be hit by the onslought of politics talk too much. They love hole-in-the-wall bars and I was thinking Brickskellers and similiar type places. Any place else you can recommend we go or do (they are not club/dance people)?

The Going Out Gurus: I'll keep my stump speech to myself about selling short the vast variety of social scenes in this town and just hit you with a few quick winners. Zack's and L'il Pub are on Capitol Hill but you won't have to worry about political talk despite the geography. Also try the Raven in Mt. Pleasant, Kingpin on U Street and Stoney's on L. - Rhome

Reston, Va.: Hi! I'm taking out a bachelorette party this Friday night. I've been searching for a male strip club specifically for women in the D.C. area.

The best I've heard of is Wet. What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Okay, Reston. Wet is NOT specifically for women. It's a strip club/nude bar for gay men that has become popular with straight women, but the men still outnumber bachelorettes 7 or 8 to 1. If you want a show with an all-female audience, head to either the Hanger Club or the Classics. (See our Bachelorette Party Planner for more ideas. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Hey Great Gurus --

Hope all is well! I have a two-part question, and I'd love some help!

My roommates and I have a few friends coming into town this week, and we all want to get together with other friends. We're looking at upwards of a dozen people, young men and women. We were hoping to find a restaurant that can accomodate this crowd, but nowhere that's going to break the bank. Any ideas, beyond Buca di Beppo?! We live in Adams Morgan.

And also, hoping to do something afterwards, but we'd rather not go sit in a loud bar. Art-o-matic might be fun, but do you have any other ideas about something semi-cultural where we can nurse a few drinks and interact with one another/have fun?

If you can help me, I will bestow upon you the honor of Greatest Gurus Ever!

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Second part of the question is easy-peasy: Art-O-Matic is the right place for you and your friends. It's just cavernous and you'll have a gas walking the halls, appraising the good, the bad and the ugly installations. There's cheap beer and plenty of surprises. Email me (kate.gibbs@washingtonpost.com)and I'll tell you the number of the secret party room.

But where to eat? I have gone off AV's. It's always been hit or miss, but after a recent miss, I can't recommend what had previously been my favorite place to take really large groups. Would your friends be down for unpretentious red and white checkered table cloths, pizza and beer? Luigi's in Dupont could be good . Sink into some pies, order a big tray of antipasta and pitchers of beer. It's the kind of place a John Irving hero would take his best girl and all his guy friends -- let Art-O-Matic speak to your hip side. Just call ahead and have them prepare a table. -- Kate

Re Indian Spices & Appliances: There's another Indian Spices store in Clarendon on 10th St. -- much closer to the Metro stop than the Ballston store.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we've had a few smarty-pants responses to my bad directions. I'm wrong, wrong, wrong about Ballston. It's Clarendon you want. But a bit of a walk never hurts. -- Alexa

Looking for spring: My bf's birthday is coming up and he is hating the oncoming cold weather. I thought to cheer him up for his birthday, I would take him to a good indoor garden. I would like something that isn't just a small room with a few bushes, but that isn't going to be mobbed either. Possibly even someplace to do an indoor spring-like picnic. I am willing to travel some (already checked out Phipps in Pittsburgh but that is a little too far to travel). Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Here in D.C. you can try the U.S. National Arboretum, but I don't think you can bring a picnic into their pavilions. Try a walk trough the Botanic Garden and then dine across the Mall in the National Gallery's -- outdoor -- sculpture garden or the Pavilion Cafe. If you are willing to travel, Longwood Gardens might be worth a trip (and they have an indoor restaurant). Does that help any? -- Maura

Indian Spice Metro: The Indian Spice place is on North 10th Street near Highland, two blocks from the Clarendon Metro. Cross Clarenden Blvd and go to 10th Street and turn left. Recommeding Ballston as the Metro stop creates a longish walk.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, yes.

Metro Center, DC: Morning Gurus:

I'm submitting the dreaded "first date" question, with a few caveats.

My "friend" is meeting a guy for the first time tomorrow evening for a blind date of dinner and some other event TBD. He is a self-described "meat and potatoes" kind of guy, and will be metroing in from the Maryland burbs. I (well, make that my "friend") is partial to Luna Grill for a first date, and was thinking of hitting the Improv for the comic hypnotist after a quick bite, but both shows are sold out.

What is this I hear about another comedy club in DC? Worth it? No? How about another red-line-DC-boundary-fun-first-date-activity that is not a movie?

Help. I'm usually a great date planner, but since I don't know this dude, I want to stay in safe territory.

Thanks much.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, MC. We're tempted to push your "friend" to expand this guy's horizons. But we understand the need for being in familiar territory. So here's a compromise: let him eat some meat and potatoes at District Chophouse (Gallery Place Metro = Red Line), then take a short walk to Teddy's House of Comedy at 6th and I. Paul Mooney, a former writer for Richard Pryor, is playing tomorrow night. He has charged, political humor -- "a good show if you can take it," says the club. But here's another idea: Art-o-Matic is not on the Red Line, but it's an unusual date and a diverse enough event that some aspect should appeal to him. -- Anne

Alexandria, Va.: What's the buzz on Arena's "South Pacific"? Good cast? Their "Guys and Dolls" was so great in the round (OK, square).

The Going Out Gurus: Haven't heard buzz yet, Alexandria. But I (Jen) do know that Molly Smith, Arena's artistic director, is directing the show, which means it should be interesting. I'm hoping to catch it when it opens next month.

Off Logan Circle: Hey guys. What are my best options to go hear some live music on Friday night in the Adams Morgan/U Street area? I guess I'm trying to think of the places that have music every weekend ... don't necessarily need any kind of "name" band ... though I wouldn't be opposed. I'd prefer to just pay a cover (or not even that) and walk on in...

The Going Out Gurus: Ummm... live music in Adams Morgan on a Friday night? Pretty much every other establishment on the 18th Street strip. You didn't tell me what kind of music you prefer, which doesn't matter because you can pretty much walk the block and window shop from outside. On U Street your options are pretty much going to be jazz. Twins always has good acts but it'll good cost you (worth it to see someone you like). If you're just casually trying to catch some jazz try Cafe Nema or Utopia. - Rhome

Persian Food: I am able to find many of the ingredients for cooking Persian food in Fresh Fields and stuff. Usually able to find most spices and herbs without a problem. Is there something specific the person is looking for?

The Going Out Gurus: Let's see...

Dupont Diva: HEY GURUS!

I love the chat so much. I am going out with a group of women in their 20s to eat a celebration dinner at Jaleo (ahhh sangria). But my question is, are there any fun places nearby to go out? Or do you recommend taking a cab/Metro somewhere better? We are looking for a happening place, maybe dancing (but not total clubby).

The Going Out Gurus: It depends on the night, DD, as well as what you're looking for. Around Jaleo, you've got several popular, stylish new lounges and bars (Zola, Poste, Zaytinya) for cocktails hanging out. For dancing without going to, say, the VIP Club, there's not much in that neighborhood. You might want to cab up to Adams Morgan or Midtown (Madhatter and Bottom Line, for example) and assess your options. On the other hand, you looking for anything special? Price range, style of music? The more details the better. -- Fritz

Fairfax, Va.: Looks like we will have nice weather this weekend. What do you recommend for a Northern Virginia couple and their 2 1/2-year-old son who loves to be outdoors?

The Going Out Gurus: How much time to you have, Fairfax? Check out Michael O'Sullivan's adventure in Nelson County. He and his wide and three-year old son had a blast picking apples, patting miniature horses and the like. Failing this, perhaps a small-scale roadtrip to Charlottesville. The grounds of the Jefferson Vineyards are good for tromping, and their wines aren't half bad either. A visit to any nearby vineyard might make a nice inside/outside day -- leaves are changing and there are roadside stands selling pies and cider en route too. Less bumper to bumper than Skyline Drive for sure. -- Kate

Hungry Hungry Hippo: Hi,

Please help with this rather mundane question. Where to go for good, cheap Italian food, preferably in Georgetown? I'm talking huge bowls of pasta for like $8-$12. Comfort food. Not too greasy. In exchange, a tip: for a great hike, go to the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls this weekend. For great tomato soup, try either Cafe Midi in Dupont or La Madeleine in Georgetown (all you can eat free bread too). Thanks a bunch!

The Going Out Gurus: Hungry Hippo, I'm having a hard time thinking of quite such a place in Georgetown since Il Radicchio closed. However, there is another branch of this unpretentious Italian that serves just what you seek, across the bridge between Rosslyn and Courthouse. -- Alexa

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus! As always, thanks for being the bottomless pit of information that you are! Here's my dilemma: Just purchased a very tiny one bedroom here in D.C. Looking for places that sell cool, modern, relatively INEXPENSIVE furniture. I'd prefer something in or close to the city, but I'm willing to venture. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. I (Jen) have heard good things about Apartment Zero. If you're really willing to venture, I also recommend Top Drawer in Columbia. My husband and I found a swank sofa and loveseat there for a very good price. Peeps, other cheap furniture suggestions?

Bethesda, MD: What are y'all's opinions on the Art-O-Matic exhibit? Worth checking out? And what's the situation with parking down there?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. Yes, check out Art-O-Matic, Bethesda. You can even see an opening night preview here. We were able to park down there opening night, but options are limited. I've been 3 times -- it's my job, you know -- and have to say Metro may be your easiest option. Step off the Waterfront Metro stop and you're there. You'll look at a lot, love a little and have a great time doing it. -- Maura

NW Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,

Some of my friends and I are heading to the Front Page around 6 tonight for drinks and possibly food. Does anyone know if you can get the bar and appetizer specials in the back where the tables are set up?

Also, we want to make a night of it and go to some bars/clubs afterward. We (a mixed group of early 20s) will have work-type shoulder bags and be dressed in khakis and other casual work clothes. Some people want to dance, others want to chill, we all want to drink for not too much $$ and stay in the Dupont area. Any suggestions for a well-suited place where the dancing starts by 9-ish? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Question 1: From my understanding, NW, if you're not in the back bar, you don't get the cheap apps/free tacos/cheap Corona deals. I'd love to be proven wrong on this one.

Question 2: Walk down a few blocks to the Madhatter or the Bottom Line, where you'll find a number of 20 somethings still living it up after work. -- Fritz

Falls Church, Va.: Love the chats !!!

Are the lines to the Spy Museum still long?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes!! Especially on weekends. Evening hours are now gone 'til Spring. Sorry.

Washington, D.C.: I really want to see a comedy show here in the city (preferably the Improv since I've heard good things) but I'm not familiar with any good comedians. Have any suggestions?

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, DC. Besides the Improv, there are other comedy options. Teddy's House of Comedy is near the MCI Center and there's also Jokes on Us in Laurel. You can see the comedy question by the earlier poster, who discovered that Flip Orley is sold out tomorrow. He's a popular guy if you can get tickets for another time with him. Kate had a ball when Darrell Hammond came through the Improv in his sweatpants, and intern David recommends Mitch Hedberg. Can you hold out til next weekend for the DC Improv Festival? My favorite troupe, Washington Improv Theatre, or WIT, is playing next Saturday and Sunday at Art-o-Matic. -- Anne

Silver Spring, Md: Hey Gurus,

Does anyone know what happened to Tuscadero? I miss going to their shows.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Silver Spring, this is Joe and I miss Tuscadero too. I think enough time has gone by that they could do a reunion show or two. But I doubt that will happen. Melissa Farris was in the Long Goodbye, but I'm pretty sure they've broken up as well. Anyone want to bring us up to date on the goings-on of the members of this near great DC band.

Alexandria, Va. (Old Town): I'm an admin at a local architect firm. I need to make a reservation for a business lunch -- approximately 10 men at an upscale restaurant in Old Town. Help!

The Going Out Gurus: Alexandria, your best bet, I say, is either the Majestic, or perhaps the Blue Point Grill. -- Alexa

Washington, DC: Going to see "The Shape of Things" at Studio Theatre this weekend...have you heard anything about the show? Anyone seen it yet?

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have not seen it (it just opened yesterday, I believe). Anyone else manage to catch it?

Calvert County, MD: Hey GoGs!

Any word on the new hotel lounge Helix? How does it compare to LeBar, Topaz, Rouge, etc.? Thinking about hitting it tonight!

Love the chat.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Calvert. The lounge just opened a few days ago. I haven't been yet, but I'm going to some cocktail tasting there tonight. It's owned by the same group that runs Rouge, Topaz, Poste and Firefly, so I have nothing but high expectations -- although they've had to push the opening back a few times for construction/aesthetic reasons. But I've heard about the ottomans and club chairs, and a "classic cocktail" menu. We'll see. -- Fritz

Illinois: I'm coming to town this weekend and am looking for some interesting exhibits. I heard something about an Egyptian exhibit at the Smithsonian. Is it still there? Also, I would like to surprise my daughter with a nice dinner. Can you suggest any great restaraunts that are "off the beaten path," moderately expensive? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Illinois, I'm afraid the Egypt show you're thinking of left the National Gallery in October, though I'd still recommend a stop there for the Trompe L'Oeil show and new sculpture galleries. I was enchanted by Arte Povera at the Hirshhorn and look forward to seeing the "Sensuous and the Sacred" at the Sackler, opening Sunday.

Do you want to do dinner nearby? By off the beaten path do you mean someplace your daughter hasn't tried before? 15 Ria or Montmartre might just work. Enjoy your visit. -- Maura

DC: Hey there, gurus...question for y'all. When do most bars/restaurants usually close their outdoor seating?

The Going Out Gurus: When it gets too cold. I know a bunch of people pulled their chairs in or tented their patios last week. -- Fritz

Arlington, Va.: Hey,

My sister is coming into town and she is is a strange beast -- vegetarian and rabid hockey fan. So we are headed to the Caps/Flyers game Saturday and I was wondering if there were any highlights for vegetarians in the vicinity of MCI.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, vegetarian Anne here. I'd try the small veggie plates at new Zaytinya, her sister Jaleo or even some veggie burritos at Austin Grill. Just go early to any of these. I imagine the Caps/Flyers are pulling in a horde of fans.

Dupont Circle: Alexa, Maura, Fritz and Rhome
Take care of me when I leave home
Anne and Joe and Jen and Kate
There suggestions are so great

A poem for the Gurus. Where in Dupont is a good place to go, sit and read, have a coffee or a drink, and maybe see members of the opposite sex (other than Kramerbooks)?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Coffee: Of course there are Starbucks and Cosis, but I bet Savino's serves a sharper cup. And they have mean cocktails too. They have an fancypants Italian machine and plenty of window seats. A window at Luna Grill and a piece of pie, or the same at Trios could make for interesting people watching too. I like the teas at Teaism on R, but the upstairs is so cramped and it would be hard disguise your watching for reading. Order a smoothie and enjoy the booths and unapologetic people-staring that goes on at the P Street Fresh Fields. Anyone else have a better idea? -- Kate

Mama Ayesha's: Mama Ayesha's is another good option for a group, in addition to Luigi's or AV (I am still a huge fan of AV)...

The Going Out Gurus: Indeed, that is a good choice for a group -- and it's packed with local flavor too (and occassionally Helen Thomas).

Mmmmm......burgers......and beer.....: Hey GOGs. I don't venture downtown too much. Was looking for a recommendation as to where I can grab a good burger and some beers (somewhere casual) near the MCI Center this weekend. One catch - no ESPN Zone/Hard Rock Cafe type places. Just a place to hang out for a couple of hours.

The Going Out Gurus: The Chop House might be a good place for you, burger meister. -- Alexa

Michael Moore: How long can we expect "Bowling for Columbine" to stay in the theaters? I have yet to get my lazy butt down there.

The Going Out Gurus: "Bowling" is playing in five locations as of this weekend -- Dupont, Landmark in Bethesda, Shirlington, Old Greenbelt and the Muvico in Arundel Mills mall. I'd imagine it will be around for at least the next couple of weeks. But once the holiday movies start opening, it will likely get squeezed out. So don't dilly-dally too much longer. -- Jen

Place non-existent: A friend and I want to go out this weekend to a place where we can listen to some cool, live music (extremely flexible on our tastes), kick back and relax, grab some drinks, and not be somewhere that is packed to the gills and over the top smoky. That is, we want to be able to see the band play while we're sitting down. Oh, and we're cheap so we don't want to pay an arm and a leg either.
Think going to see the Reagan Years perform at Clarendon Grill only not quite so packed or necessarily so loud.
Where are we going?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey this is Joe and I think there are a few good options for you actually, especially if your tastes really are flexible. You can sit down and watch bands at Galaxy Hut on Wilson Blvd. It's incredibly cheap (most nights there isn't a cover). It's small, but usually not too packed. Or if you want to do a jazz thing, go to HR-57 on 14th St. Also cheap. They sell beer and wine buy you can also bring your own. It's very no frills, but hey, you wanted cheap right. You can't sit down at the Velvet Lounge on U St, but it is also a very cheap place where you can see some pretty good live bands and not pay a bundle for a cover and drinks.

Silver Spring, Md.: Hello. I'm looking for a good, more-affordable-than-overpriced ESPNZone sports bar that has all the NBA games. I don't have a car, so it needs to be metro accessible, and preferrably near downtown, Capitol Hill or Silver Spring/Wheaton. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Wish I could send you to the Rock but it's closed. Your next best option is the Grand Slam Sports Bar at the Hyatt. Game, set, match. - Rhome

Reston, VA: Hi -- my company just relocated to the Dulles corridor, and some of us were looking for a nice bar to go to after work to hang out. Something in the Reston/Herndon area preferably, with a fireplace (key feature), and a local, neighborhood atmosphere. We've tried Champps but it's not quite right. I'm thinking like Four Courts in Arlington. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm. Good question, Reston. My favorite "neighborhood" place around there is Jimmy's Old Town Tavern, which is filled with characters and a fun place to spend an evening. No fireplace, though. Maybe the new Angelo and Maxie's steakhouse? (Haven't been there yet.) I'm wracking my brain, but can't think of any in Reston or Herndon. I wonder if anyone else knows one? -- Fritz

Re: Visitors on Thanksgiving: For the person w/ anti-DC friends who are visiting for the weekend. First and foremost, you should get some new friends with open minds, but aside from that, Thanksgiving weekend is one of my most favorite in the city because all the Hill people are gone, all the students are gone and so many others are out of town. 85% of the people you will see out that weekend are local people. It's a really different vibe. And a blast.

The Going Out Gurus: True, true, true. Or they're people who are entertaining their friends over the four-day weekend.

Kalorama, Washington, D.C.: Are there any corn mazes still open? Interested in going on a weekend evening.

The Going Out Gurus: Not so much for the corn mazes. Most of them closed last weekend. But some farm stores/orchards, like Butler's in Germantown, are still open.

Tyson's Corner, Va.: You guys rock!!

So I have tickets to the L.A. game on Friday night and was looking for some good/cheap places to get a quick bite and some beers near the MCI Center.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Try District Chophouse ($2 beers until 7), Fado, Gordon Biersch (good beer but not cheap), or even the bar at Nick and Steff's inside the MCI Center. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Hi guys. I am looking to go hiking this weekend since the weather is predicted to be warm and the fall leaves are at their peak. Can you recommend any good spots in the area besides Great Falls?

The Going Out Gurus: I (Anne) always love Catoctin Mountain Park. Beautiful views, and many trails to choose from.

Dupont Circle: I miss the old Gypsy Kings wannabe band that used to play Monday nights at Chi-Cha. The new one is nothing more than a GK-wannabe-wannabe and just doesn't do it for me. Do you know the name of the old one and where I can find them?

The Going Out Gurus: The old one was Duende Cameron. They apparently had a falling out with the owner. No word on what they're doing now, but I'm trying to put a trace on them. Hopefully I'll know by next week. -- Fritz

Arlington, Va: Hi gurus..... going to this 1869 society shindig Saturday at the Corcoran for the opening of the Miro exhibit. Question: what kind of crowd can I expect to mingle with, AND (more importantly) where to go for a drink around there beforehand? Thanks much - enjoy that weather!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington. This Saturday's 1869 event -- Tertulia -- sounds pretty festive. The Corcoran's young members group is -- on my experience -- a pretty outgoing bunch. And at the very least, the Miro show is worth the trip. It's been open for a little while now and I think its galleries are some of the most joyful spots in the city. As for drinks beforehand, maybe the bar at Teatro Goldoni -- Maura

Glebe Rd: Hi there,

Wanted to know if you could help me out. A friend of mine is coming into town on Friday. He's staying up in Gaithersburg and wants to hang out Friday. What bars are in the Gaithersburg area? DC is not really an option here. Thanks so much!!!

The Going Out Gurus: The two best bars in Gaithersburg are Summit Station, a big ol' brewpub in Old Town Gaitherburg with live blues and rock on Friday nights, and Mrs. O'Leary's Irish Pub, a nice, friendly pub with good food and a well-poured pint of Guinness. I had friends in G'burg who much preferred Mrs. O'Leary's, but I like the brews at the Station. -- Fritz

DC: No seriously, are any of you gurus cute, single?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes.

GloverPark: Re: pre-theatre eats. Checked out your list and noted it doesn't include a recent addition: Chef Geoff's now right around corner from National on 13th, I believe. Haven't been to the new location, but they do a nice job at the original place up on New Mexico Ave. Good creative American for mid-range prices.

The Going Out Gurus: You're absolutely right. We do need to add that one. I haven't been yet either, but have heard good things. -- Jen

WDC: As a suggestion for meeting people, the entertainment guide suggests clubs for young professionals like Friends of the Zoo and a Smithsonian club thing. Do you guys have an opinion on these type of groups? Are they good ways to socialize?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. I think these young member groups are great, provided you know what you're getting into. If you're interested in the topic at hand -- art, animals, theater, ballet -- then I'd go for it, at the Zoo, Smithsonian, Folger, Washington Ballet, etc. You're likely to meet some nice people with similar interests. There are certainly those who go with more dubious intentions, but I'm not sure how much luck they have. There's a lot of variety in these groups as well. I'd attend events at a few and then decide if one's a good fit. -- Maura

Adams Morgan : hey! are there any places around A.M. that give away free tacos during happy hour? only crunchy tacos please. i hate soft tacos, i'm getting a searing headache just talking about them.

i just had some tacos for lunch. they were good tacos.

The Going Out Gurus: tackos, tackos, tackos, tackos (that's how Alexa pronounces tacos, cause she's British. She also mispronounces pasta. But we're training her.)

Gipsy Kings Wannabes...: Was at Cafe Citron on Monday night and they had live music... Gipsy Kings-style stuff with flamenco dancers to boot.

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, yes. Flemenco at Citron. That should help the Duende Cameron fan. Thanks.

Le Bar?: Hi guys, I'm meeting my boyfriend at Le Bar tonight. Any special drink recommendations?

The Going Out Gurus: I like the L'Enfant (Le Bar's French Martini) and the Rochambeau, a vodka martini with - don't laugh - anchovies. It's quite good, once you try it. -- Fritz

Help!: My wife and I moved to D.C. one year ago, and have been too busy with family and careers to really "see" the area. We have a kid-free day and night this Saturday and would like to do something fun and romantic. Please help -- we've been looking forward to this for a while now. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

The Going Out Gurus: You deserve a night of pampering. We suggest a dinner at a romantic restaurant (here's our readers' favorites) and then a drive around downtown DC to view the lit monuments in all their glory. That way you'll get to see the city too. Alternately, you could have a posh dinner downtown and then see "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Shakespeare Theatre. Have fun! -- Anne

Winchester, Va.: A friend is a big fan of foreign films, and there aren't too many showing out here in the boonies. Other than the festival in the spring, are there any places that show foreign films on a regular basis in D.C./Virginia/Maryland? Want to do the film and dinner thing on either Saturday 12/7 or 12/14. Any suggestions for a theatre/film and mid-priced restaurant are greatly appreciated!

The Going Out Gurus: Welcome Winchester. Visions is DC's only rep/indie/ foreign film house. But there are plenty of other choices. Among them: in Virginia try Cinema Arts Theater in Fairfax, Cineplex Odeon Shirlington 7. In Maryland, look at the listings for Landmark's Bethesda Row and P&G Old Greenbelt Theater.

If you were to go to the movies either the week of 12/7 or 12/14, you'd find even large cinemas glowing with the lion's share of the year's best films (all hoping to be Oscar contenders). The longest lines will be for "Harry Potter" and "The Two Towers: Lord of the Rings II." In anticipation of the holiday movie rush, release dates change like leaves. Expect to choose from movies like: "The Quiet American" (based on the Graham Greene) and "Rabbit-Proof Fence" (about Native resettlement in Australia) both directed by Philip Noyce; "Talk to Her" (overlapping lives of two women in a coma) by Almodovar; "The Crimes of Father Amaro" (about a priest who receives charity from a drug lord and is incidentally the highest grossing Mexican film to date); "About Schmidt" (the film that opened the NYC Film Festival this year starring Jack Nicholson); and "The Pianist" by Roman Polanski.

Where there are good movies, there are good restaurants: as soon as you pick you film and your theater -- drop us a line and we'll set you up with some choices. -- Kate

Re: Veg near MCI Center: Burma is a terrific hole-in the wall restaurant on 6th street. Little atmosphere but stellar cooking!

The Going Out Gurus: And how.

Dupont coffee people scoper: needs to work on his spelling and grammar or his scoping will be pointless!

That being said, Firehook is a grand place to hang.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, school-moe-D.

District Chophouse:: Would knowing that the Lakers are in town tomorrow night to play the Wizards change your response to the blind date questioner? The MCI Center area on game nights tends to be a bit of a zoo.

The Going Out Gurus: You're totally right, DC. It's tough to wade through those crowds. Perhaps the Art-o-Matic would work better after all. And she could still go to Luna.

Metro Center: Two young (30s), black, professional couples looking for a cool place to meet Friday night for drinks and conversation in a comfortable setting (so no place too loud or crowded). Preferably in DC. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

The Going Out Gurus: Around Metro Center, I'd say Ortanique has good food (including a happy hour menu) and some of the best Mojitos and tropical drinks in town. I'm a huge fan of the upstairs lounge. The live salsa music doesn't start until 10:30 or so, so you'll have plenty of time. You might also try Poste, the bar at the Hotel Monaco, which is spacious enough to prevent the overcrowding at some hotel bars, although Topaz and Rouge remain popular gathering places. Toka Cafe on 19th Street has good drinks and a stylish atmosphere, too. Hope some of that helps. -- Fritz

DC: What's the scoop on Zaytinya?

Anyone notice a drop in quality/service at Jaleo?

The Going Out Gurus: Zaytinya is a treat: Cool blue and white decor, chilled white wines from Greece, mildly spiced tapas inspired by Greece, Turkey and Lebanon, warm seats by two fireplaces.

I haven't noticed any change in quality at Jaleo. -- Kate

Mt. Pleasant: Speaking of the Black Cat, do they ever do a happy hour in the Red Room?

The Going Out Gurus: Yep. Friday and Saturday nights, there are deals on Rolling Rock, Black Cat Ale and DeGroen's beers until 9:30 or 10.

Bethesda, MD: You guys do a great job. One request - would you PLEASE add dates to the restaurant reviews in the archive? Or, if that is too onerous, at least put them on going forward?

It would be very helpful as the Post's restaurant critic himself has said that reviews are only good for one year.

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: For about a year now, all new reviews have dates. However, with a database of more than 2,500 restaurants, it's some task keeping all those current all the time. User reviews, at the bottom, are sometimes a helpful way of gauging whether an older report still stands up. -- Alexa

Upscale in OT, VA: Other choices: Elysium (at the Morrison Hotel) is about as upscale as you can get. Food's great, but very expensive.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, perfect for the business account.

Cheap furniture shopping: IKEA at Potomac Mills, of course!

The Going Out Gurus: I didn't mention that one because I thought it too obvious. But one can never be too obvious, I suppose.

Arlington, VA: Anything going on at MCI Friday? Planning on going to dinner in the area, and last time it took 40 minutes to find parking because of a concert. Don't want to be so unprepared this time.

The Going Out Gurus: In case you couldn't tell, the Wizards are playing the Lakers. Should be a zoo. Consider yourself warned.

Washington, DC: Hey,

My girlfriend and I were looking for a club to hit up on Friday night. Something kind of posh and upscale, but not all techno. Looking for some good rap/r&b mix with some techno thrown in. A good place to dance, sit on some couches and drink, and beautiful people all around. Also, the difficulty of getting into all of your suggestions.

The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm. Well, you could try Murali Lounge or the VIP Club, which has its own hip-hop floor and plenty of couches. Women are free before midnight. Murali is a hip-hop/R&B night, but it gets an attractive, well-dressed crowd, and had plenty of comfy seating (couches, armchairs) last time I was there. It shouldn't be too hard to get into either if you arrive before 11 or so. -- Fritz

washington: I'm feeling patriotic this week. Any word on Veteran's Day observances at Arlington Cemetery?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Arlington Cemetery commmemorates Veterans Day with a wreath-laying and music at 11 a.m. Monday at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Baltimore, MD: Another question about the Spy Museum. If I get there at 11am Saturday, how long of a wait? Also, how long can you spend in there? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Baltimore, Kate walked by the Spy Museum last weekend and the line was around the block. I'm guessing you could be waiting up to a couple hours. Can someone who works nearby get you advanced tix tomorrow? You have to pick them up in person, I'm afraid. I'd give yourself at least an hour inside. They don't dig very deep, but there's a lot of surface to cover. -- Maura

Arlington, Va.: Hi, y'all,

My friends are heading to dinner at the Colorado Kitchen (thanks, Tom Sietsema) to celebrate my roommate's clerkship and the end of a long semester of law school. Can you recommend a bar in the general vicinity where we can go for fun, semi-sophisticated after-dinner drinks?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: This one I'm not sure about. I'm having a hard time thinking of semi-sophisticated joints around 15th and Colorado. I think your best bet might be to head back down 16th to Bar Rouge or 15 ria. -- Fritz

Mt Pleas again and again: I'm convinced you guys have gotten lazy. You seem to only answer the same questions every week--bachelorette parties, best hole-in-the-walls, best pre-theatre dinner places. I mean, come on. Give us the skinny on somethin else--how about happy hours that aren't listed on washingtonpost.com? Pretty please? Sometimes we don't have the moolah to go and take a random chance on a faraway place.

The Going Out Gurus: Okay, Mt. Pleasant. I'll bite. We work with what we're given. Today, for example, we got an avalanche of MCI-related questions. What did you ask about today? What are you looking for? Do you want us to start throwing random ideas at you? As for happy hours, I think we've been pretty diligent about getting on as many as possible, so I'm not sure which you're looking for. Here's one: half-price champagne tonight at Bar Rouge. Veuve Cliquot, too. And cool electronic music. How's that? -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Rouge and Topaz have reintroduced many of us to hotel bars. Have the Gurus assembled a list/reviews of hotel bars, new and old, in the area? I notice that even the most obscure hotels with bars advertise happy hour specials and other goodies.

The Going Out Gurus: Well, I've reviewed just about every hotel bar that's opened in the city in the last two years or so, and several of the old ones besides. And Eric Brace as written about some, as well as various hotel-related musical activites. Maybe I should make a round-up this afternoon. We'll see. -- Fritz

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Am meeting somebody for drinks after work, but I am not sure if it's a date or just a networking opportunity. What is a good place to go that is fun, but not date-ish, in the city?

The Going Out Gurus: How about 18th Street Lounge or Bar Rouge? They're professional enough if it's just networking, and fun if it leads to something more promising.

The Going Out Gurus: Looks like we have to wrap things up for the week. Thanks, as always, for joining us. We hope to hear from you again next Thursday at 1. But for now, as the stellar rock band Scandal once sang, "Goodbye to you."
