Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, everyone. We're in a somber mood today. It's not because of Halloween, but due to the senseless murder of Jam Master Jay. A moment of silence please, for one of hip-hop's true pioneers.

Thank you. Now, it is Halloween, so check our Halloween activities, or see what you missed at Tuesday's Drag Races.

We have the full complement of Gurus with us today, so let's kick it.

Washington DC: Hi Gurus!! Do you know if a costume is required this evening at Reef?

The Going Out Gurus: Costumes are not required to rock the Reef tonight, but should you want to dress up (or down), do so. The bar has neither a contest nor a DJ. To celebrate H'ween, pints of Rogue's Dead Guy Ale have been marked down to the low, low price of $3. -- Kate

Art-O-Matic, Tonight: Hi all,
Just wondering if you know what the opening night for Art-o-Matic is going to be like. I wanted to go tonight because I figured they would have a neat Halloween theme and I would rather do something different than go out to a bar and be hung over tomorrow. Do you think I will be the only one in costume there? thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: No worries, there will be plenty of others in costume at Art-O-Matic tonight, although not any gurus. If anyone can't make it tonight, remember it's open -- non-masquerade -- through Nov. 30 and -- based on my sneak preview -- is definitely worth the trip. -- Maura

All Night, Md.: Heading to Arundel Mills for dinner and games at Jillian's tomorrow night for friend's birthday. Then heading to Baltimore for the typical club scene. Had wanted to stay out all night -- but what doesn't close at 2 a.m.? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Well, thanks to Baltimore's infamous "Footloose" laws, an establishment with a dance floor cannot serve alcohol after 2 a.m., so most places just give up and close. This is a big problem for clubs like Redwood Trust, which have big-name DJs but have to shut down while the party's still jumping.

If anyone has any suggestions - or can remind me which place near Redwood had the Buzz "afterparty" a few weeks ago, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. -- Fritz

NW Washington, D.C.: Does anyone know where I can order some Ostrich? I was watching the Food Network and they were showing restaurants that serve ostrich steaks and burgers. Is there any place like this in D.C. or the metro D.C. area?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm trying to remember where I might have seen it. I've bought it before -- an ostrich (or was it emu?) steak from somewhere rather pedestrian. Giant?. But Fresh Fields has it in its frozen case. Let's pull our heads out of the sand and think. Anyone seen ostrich on the menu? -- Alexa

Washington, D.C.: Not exactly a "going out" question, but, I'd really like to join a book club, but don't really know how to find out about what's out there. Any ideas of places to look for a club? Or tips to start your own, maybe?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. The first place I (Jen) would suggest you look is Politics & Prose. They have a number of existing book groups that people can join, though they tend to focus on specific genres (public affairs, classics, etc.) Also try looking on bulletin boards at places you frequent: your gym, bars and restaurants, your local library. You may find people looking for book club members there. You can also join the Post's Book Club -- there's information about that here. Lastly, if you want to start one yourself, I suspect it will be easier than you think. Find one or two friends or co-workers who have an interest in reading -- that shouldn't be tough. Like that old shampoo commercial used to say, they'll tell their friends, and so on, and so on, and pretty soon you'll have a decent-sized group. If you can gather together five people or more, you'll be in great shape and can choose your first selection. Good luck -- hope this helps.

Rosslyn, Va.: Hi Gurus, What's the deal with Halloween events in Georgetown. Rumor has it that they shut down M street. Is it worth going or will the mobs of people and impossible lines just be annoying? Thanks and Happy Halloween!

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, rumors. Hey Rosslyn, it's Kate and I've got to level with you: the Georgetown overran with Halloween madness was the Georgetown of "St. Elmo's Fire." True madness is long gone.

True, costumed crowds will mill around and clog bars tonight, but there's nothing organized. I noticed this morning that police have erected barricades at the corner of M and Wisconsin. These waist-high walls will, no doubt, prevent legions of sexy kittens from tettering off high heels and into traffic. Cab situation will be a nightmare. I'd avoid it.

K Street: Fritz, the photos are great, I was there and didn't see all those divas!! I especially loved the barbies!

The Going Out Gurus: The Barbies were hilarious. For, um, editorial reasons, we couldn't show (or even name) them all, but Bulimia Barbie was my favorite. -- Fritz

WAshington, DC: I can't wait to see Episode II at the IMAX. Do you think I need to get tickets in advance for this? (we are going next weekend)

The Going Out Gurus: If you're set on going next weekend, I (Jen) say it can't hurt to get your tickets in advance. Frankly, though, I don't think you'll have too much of a problem getting seats. "Clones" only screens twice on Fridays and Saturdays, but it is running through January. So I don't expect a mad rush for tickets. Then again, one should never underestimate the power of the Force, at least not when it comes to people who are nutty enough to see this movie 20 times or more.

Alexandria: GOG's,

I have a date Saturday night in Bethesda. Are there any Metro accessible places you would recommend for after dinner drinks up in that neck of the woods? It doesn't have to be anything really nice (neither one of us will be too dressed up), just someplace with decent drinks for her and a beer selection that includes more than Bud or Miller for me.

The Going Out Gurus: Alexandria, not sure where you'll be for dinner, but the bar at Mon Ami Gabi is a treat, once their dinner crowd is seated (say after 10). They don't stay open too late, but there's always Chrome next door. -- Maura

Fairfax, VA: I know this may be more suburban - but I am meeting a friend today that works in Herndon and I work in Fairfax City. Any ideas of a good place to go for a few beers and some pool? Preferably not "too young". Then again, any help is great!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Carpool in Herndon might be a good bet, and it's not too young, usually. I also like Fast Eddie's on Lee Highway in Fairfax. -- Fritz

silver spring, md: Hi Gurus. In your humble opinions, is a meal at Ruths Chris a good deal? B-friend wants to go there for his b-day. Approx. how much money for two? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: My guess is, Silver, that depending on what you drink, you'll be paying around $100 for dinner for two at Ruth's's. -- Alexa

re: Ostrich: Teaism serves a yummy ostrich burger.

The Going Out Gurus: Here we go some ostrich sightings...

Re: Ostrich: Fudruckers has a great Ostrich burger!

The Going Out Gurus: Oh.

Bday girl in Arlington, VA: Hi Gurus...love the chats...I've learned a lot from you guys! I need help...it's my big 2-5 this weekend and I can't decide where to go to celebrate w/my friends. Adams Morgan is too much hassle (I must be getting old!) That leaves G-town and Midtown. I'm looking for a traditional bar atmosphere...with a dj and some dancing...maybe even an area for sitting/lounging? Not interested in dress codes or cover charges...want my friends to spend their money on buying me drinks! What's "My Brother's Place" like? The $12 all you can drink beer special sounds great...maybe move to Irish Times after for shaking what my mama gave me? Any suggestions would be welcome! Thanks and Happy Halloween.

The Going Out Gurus: If you're too old for the hassle of Adams Morgan, Bday Girl, you might be too old for the college and intern crowd that packs My Brother's Place every weekend for pitcher specials. Or you might think it's fun. Either way, it would dovetail nicely with a trip the the Times.

For a similar beer-and-DJ party vibe, you might also try the Madhatter or the Bottom Line. -- Fritz

va: any pay what you can previews?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. Tonight's Theater J performance of "Death and the Maiden" is a pay-what-you-can. And Charter Theatre's "Poe and All That Jazz" is pay-what-you-can all the time. Both seem pretty appropriate for Halloween, don't you think? -- Jen

Logan Circle: Hi Gurus,

Any details on the festivities at Art-O-Matic tonight? I'm inclined to go, since I liked it so much two years ago, and the halloween tie-in sounds like a good idea, but on the chance that it's lame, it's a long way away to any other excitement.

The Going Out Gurus: Logan, everything is going on at Art-O-Matic tonight -- hundreds of visual artists, live bands, poetry slammers are going to be strutting their stuff. I hate to issue guarantees, but I can say you won't see anything else like it for a long time. Two hints: the bar is on the second floor and follow the red line. You'll be fine. -- Maura

Black Rock, Maryland That Is: so, what are the gurus going as tonight?

and what are all ya'll's favorite candy's?

worst thing you ever got trick or treating?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Black Rock, this is Joe and i'm very anti Halloween so personally I plan to mug all of the little kids wandering around northwest. That should bolster my candy supply for a while. Jen and her husband are going around as the White Stripes, though it's unclear whether they are the sister/brother white stripes or the ex husband and wife white stripes. Fritz is celebrating halloween by drinking in bars on an expense account. And yes, that's pretty much how he celebrates every day of the year. Rhome was going to be Flavor Flav but he can't get the costume together.

best candy: reeses peanut butter cups or a butterfinger

worst thing to get: apples or raisins. If any of the kids I steal from tonight have either of those in their bags, I'll be very unhappy.

Adams Morgan: Hey GOGs,
Where can I get a last minute costume this afternoon? I'm such a procrastinator!
Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: AM, we appreciate the last ditch effort. Shopping guru Janet isn't here, but left us her favorite costume shops. Good luck. -- Maura

Stressed Out in Va.: Hi gurus! I am in need of a really great weekend asap! Please help. I am working crazy hours as a grad student and budding therapist, my hubby is working equally crazy hours supporting my higher education plans! Did i mention the 2 kids, leftover sniper anxiety, and that my father just announced he's getting married (for the 6th time!!)... OK thanks for letting me vent, now can you reccomend a great date night to help me shake off all this stress. I would love someplace a little more laid back than Dreams, someplace i can hear great music (i'm thinking Erykah Badu, Musiq, Heather Headley...)and have some good drinks. A little romance might be nice but mostly I want to just chilll someplace cool that makes me forget about my sometimes overwhelming real life. I will be in a meeting during the chat but I hope you will post this so i can get your always on point suggestions and maybe someone out there has some ideas to help too. Thanks guys, you're the best!!

The Going Out Gurus: Okay... you want to chill, have some nice drinks while music you dig plays in the background. Maybe some tasty vittles too? Check out Adrian at Penang. If your stress carries on through the week I'll give you a chill out booster shot on Hump Day. The back room at Aroma might be good for you on Fridays too when Dredd plays soul classics and rare grooves. Very nice place to lounge and cozy up, only gets unpleasant if a lot of people come through and get the spot all smoked up. - Rhome

Chantilly, Va.: Hi there -
The guys are getting together in DC this weekend for one of my friends who is getting married next week, and we wanted to take him to smoke some stogies. There was a bar across the street from the National Press Club that allowed cigar smoking, would you happen to remember the name of the place? If not, any other suggestions for this activity in DC (and no Ozio's)? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Nope. Not Ozio's. You're thinking of Butler's: The Cigar Bar. Good choice of stogies, excellent martinis and decent single malts. A favorite. -- Fritz

Petworth: Hey gurus! What's up?

OK, so there's all these mainstream movies coming out that I want to see. Harry Potter, James Bond, the Two Towers... I must see them all, on the largest screen possible.

Haven't been able to find out yet if any or all are playing at the Uptown. Do you all know?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Petworth. Here's the deal. "Lawrence of Arabia" opens at the Uptown tomorrow. I (Jen) would imagine it will remain until "Harry Potter" opens there on the 16th. And I'm fairly certain "Two Towers" will take over the theater in December.
Two out of three ain't bad, right?

Wash DC: What's the buzz on Insomnia? I'm 47. Would I feel terribly....old??

The Going Out Gurus: Well..... probably. Or creepy. They get a good number of college students in there.

Killing time...: Tomorrow I have to go into (downtown) DC for a 4:30 meeting. On a Friday. Grrrrr. My boyfriend and I are going to Corduroy for dinner at 8, so he is going to Metro it in and we are going to have drinks before dinner. By the time the meeting is over I am going to be frazzled, so I want to go to a nice, QUIET place (i.e. not Red Sage) to unwind before dinner. Any recommendations? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Killing Time, this is a toughie: a quiet place downtown on a Friday night. I (Maura) thought maybe the Willard's bar might be safe, but I've been told it won't be quiet either. Any posters have any secret spots?

Dupont Circle: I was planning on going to the Drag Races on Tuesday, but was kept indside by the rain and cold. Was I the only one who didn't make it? If they were rained out, when is the rain date?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, the crowd was down a bit from last year, but the races went on as scheduled and 17th Street was a madhouse. Click the link above to see the photographic evidence.

Silver Spring, MD: Here's why you shouldn't rob those kiddies, gurus:
(from the AP)
Candy thief sentenced to Halloween punishment
By Associated Press, 10/30/02

ELYRIA, Ohio -- A candy thief has been ordered to pass out Halloween treats
while wearing a sign saying "I'm sorry. I will not steal from children."

Edward Rivera, 23, pleaded guilty Monday to attempted robbery for stealing
trick-or-treat candy from a 10-year-old boy last Halloween. Charges of assault
and robbery were dropped.

Rivera, of Lorain, knocked the boy down before stealing his candy, said Lorain
County Common Pleas Judge Edward Zaleski.

He ordered Rivera to wear the sign and a costume while he hands out candy at a
Lorain hospital on Thursday. He also placed Rivera on probation for three years.

"I have a habit of trying to make the punishment fit with the crime," Zaleski
said.

The Going Out Gurus: I think I'll send Mr. Rivera some fan mail.

Washington, D.C.: I'm thinking of going to the VIP club tonight -- to see Elvis Crespo. Do I really need to dress up in a Halloween costume? Will I look weird if I don't?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, Washington, you don't have to. With 3,000 people in there, I'm sure you won't be the only one wearing a costume. There's no reward/discount for a costume, so just go an enjoy yourself.

Transylvania: Any word on if the Visions Rocky Horror Picture show viewing is going to be in full force or just a few people yelling out lines? I have been dying to find a DC RHPS locale and am pumped there is finally one!

You guys make my week,
magenta

The Going Out Gurus: Hola, Magenta. I (Jen) am not sure whether it will be full force, but given the interest in "Rocky Horror" (we've gotten several questions on Got Plans? about when there would be a screening), I'd say it's a definite possibility. Besides, "Rocky Horror" has always been about the power of the audience. If you want to pump up the effort, it's all in your hands. But maybe you should call Visions first, just to make sure they're cool with the rice-throwing that may take place. (I can't imagine they wouldn't be.)

bethesda, md: Parents coming into town--want dinner before Kennedy Center symphony at 8pm. They're adventurous, but not ever had Indian so I'm thinking Bombay Club. Looks great, but I'm wondering if we'll be out in time to get to Kennedy Center? Also, is it a better brunch experience than dinner? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, the Bombay Club is georgeous at any time. Just eat fast. Brunch, we always say, is a particularly good deal. Twenty bucks or so for a sophisticated buffet and all-you-can champers. -- Alexa

Fairfax VA: Is Nightmare on M street worth going to?

The Going Out Gurus: If you like cheap beer, twentysomething crowds and you want to visit a few bars you might not have seen before, then I'd say you should at least consider the bar crawl. But the deals aren't anything you can't beat at their individual happy hours. -- Fritz

Death & The Maiden: I just noticed that Death & The Maiden was one of your recommendations for a pay what you can -- Just wanted to say that I saw the play years ago in London and it was excellent. It's not exactly what you'd call a "feel-good" show -- but it is amazing how entertaining two people and limited scenery can be. Let us know how the Theater J show is!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the input. Yes, if anyone sees it, do write in and share your opinion. - Jen

RE: quiet Friday night cocktails: I live in Gaithersburg, but I work downtown, so between closing time and a great night on the town, my buddies and I usually go to the bar over at Nick & Stef's. (6th and F). The bar is small, but sophisticated, has cozy couches, large leather barstools and perfect "It's Friday and I need a cocktail ASAP" martinis.

The Going Out Gurus: Good call, Gaithersburg. I'm a fan of that bar, although the last few times I've been past, it's been completely dead. A bit off the beaten path, I think, but worth a look-in if you're in the area.

That said, around the MCI Center, I prefer Zola, Poste, Angelo and Maxie's and the District Chophouse, but none of them have couches. -- Fritz

Harry Potter at the Uptown: It does in fact open on November 15th there and tickets are already available for sale over the internet at fandango.

The Going Out Gurus: True that, thanks. I (Jen) am not sure if people are getting as psyched about "Chamber of Secrets" as they were about the first one, so I don't know how many people are actually buying tickets early. Maybe it's just me, but my enthusiasm level is markedly lower.

Arlington, Va.: My boyfriend and I have been dealing with a lot of serious stuff this week (family illness, etc.), so I'd really like to find something fun and different to do this weekend to take our minds off of everything. Something light-hearted, maybe outside (but its getting pretty chilly). We're not the bar/club type, but are pretty open minded. We went to the corn maze last weekend (cheesy, but fun), and the Trompe l'Oeil exhibit, and went to Clifton Days a few weeks ago and enjoyed that, too. Something along those lines, or a new exhibit, or even a restaurant with good atmosphere (we loved Wazuri). Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm sorry you're going through rough times, Arlington. This is Anne, and I'm cheered to see how many activities you've explored already. I like your approach. Fritz and I were just at Wazuri, and it warmed us too. For more new restaurants, Alexa likes FireFlies in Del Ray, and I recently cozied up by the fireplace at Zaytinya. The waiter there was so gentle in offering wine guidance, and I bet that on a quiet night you'll find it a soothing place. Tomorrow from 6-8 is First Friday, an easy way to see what's new in Dupont Circle galleries and maybe even meet the artists. On our last rainy weekend, I went to see George Catlin and His Indian Gallery at the Renwick, and I immediately forgot the grey outdoors -- concentrating instead on Catlin's bright colors, landscapes and adventures in documenting the West.

WDC: Hi -- Love the chats! Here's the situation: I have plans with 3 girlfriends and one 18 month old for lunch/brunch on Sunday. We'd like to go somewhere nice but also baby friendly -- and someplace a little off the beaten path. I was thinking Colorado Kitchen -- what would y'all reccomend?

The Going Out Gurus: Oh yes, Colorado Kitchen. Nice idea. Here, also, is our list of kid-friendly spots for you. -- Alexa

Capitol Hill, DC: Has Zaytinya opened its doors yet? If so, how is it?

The Going Out Gurus: I have been. And I'll bet the farm it's going to be DC's new favorite restaurant. It's mine.

Zaytinya is Santorini by way of Manhattan. Small, shareable plates (the menu offers more than 60 tapas with plenty of veggie choices) inspired by Greece, Turkey and Lebanon are served graciously. The chef (Jose Ramon Andres) of Z. already ace this game nearby at Jaleo. The decor, high styled on a blue and white theme, is another baby from the team responsible for Zola and Poste. There are seats galore, two levels, two fireplaces and an open kitchen. The whole effect is glamourous.

I am a food tryer, and my pal and I all but licked five plates clean. I look forward to revisiting the puree of peach-colored roe, ground lamb stewed in light tomato sauce, an exhilerating salad of mint, orange, pomegranite, red onion, olives that I've made at home this week. Next time I'll pretend I'm on holiday and have the octopus in red wine, and, and, and ...

The wine list is predominently Greek and one with which I was unfamiliar. Our server was patient and sipped me through two different varieties. Dinner for two was $35 before tip. A total knockout.

And for an" It's Academic" bonus: Zaytinya means olive oil in Turkish. The spot's on the corner of 701 9th Street, NW in the new Pepco Building. -- Kate

arlington, VA: How about Le Bar for the person looking to kill time before dinner? Nice place, and it's been fairly quiet the two times I've been there.

The Going Out Gurus: Good suggestion, Arlington, but Le Bar is losing its "most favored" status over here, thanks to indifferent service and drinks that weren't up to bar last few times that we (multiple Gurus, not just me) have been through.

But you can try your luck, and let us know if things improve. -- Fritz

Washington, DC: Where's a fun, cheap and Democratic hangout that will be watching the election returns on Tues?

The Going Out Gurus: Stetsons, for one. We gurus will be, of course, working, but where do our chatters plan to be next Tues?

For Chantilly, VA: I think that the name of the cigar bar near the National Press Club (E & 14th, NW)is Shelly's Back Room (F & 14th) -- also with cigars, martinis and single malts and a nice, mellow vibe.

The Going Out Gurus: You might be right. The Grand Hyatt is at 11th and H.

feeling a bit anti-halloween today...: but still want to go out. is there a bar the hub and i can go to without being mobbed by dressed-up, inebriated coeds and early twentysomethings just to hang out and have some drinks? we live up between dupont and woodley so anywhere around there would be great. thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: The bar at Bistrot du Coin? Timberlakes? Gazuza? Murphy's of Washington? The Brickskeller?

Falls Church: In the complete Halloween soundtrack, what is essential?

currently my list includes:

Werewolves of London - Zevon
Thriller - Jackson, but mostly for Vincent
Ghostbusters? - who ya gonna call
The Time Warp - RHPS
and of course the classic by the cryptkicker 5 - the monster mash

j

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) recently made a Halloween mix (yes, I am a dork). And I'd also include on that list the following: "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo, "The Freaks Come Out at Night" by Whodini, "Nightmare on My Street" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince, "Season of the Witch" by Donovan, "I Put a Spell on You" by CCR and, of course, the theme from "Halloween."
Other suggestions? I might have to do a volume two at some point...

Jack-o-lame in Adams Morgan: OK, so it's Halloween and I have no plans. My hubby is going to a pretty early show at the Black Cat (I wasn't interested) -- any ideas for where we could meet up after and soak in festivities? Hubby loves Halloween and is depressed as all hell that it's about to pass us by without proper celebration. Gurus, please don't let me sit at home and watch TV on Halloween! Help me keep the Halloween spirit alive!

The Going Out Gurus: Jane-o-Lame, I'm going to needle you a little bit about passing up the Black Cat show. Garageland may be number two on the marquee but there's a great pop band from New Zealand and I highly recommend this rare chance to rock with them.

You could meet Husband at Bossa. If you get there early, snag a window seat so that He can watch the kooky crowds wait in line at Madam's Organ. Bossa's a pretty relaxing spot, somewhere you could happily down a cocktail or two solo. -- Kate

DC: I'm looking for a great, resonably priced Asian or Italian resturant for dinner tomorrow night. Somewhere in the Georgetown/Adams Morgan area would be great. Any suggestions ??

The Going Out Gurus: DC. Prospect pizza on Prospect Street in Georgetown is reasonably priced, and delicious. And Vietnam Georgetown also gets our vote. -- Alexa

Washington, D.C.: Kittens, so it's 7 p.m. and you are sitting at a fine dark wood bar waiting on some friends. What are you drinking?

Scotch, vodka lemon, the new Ham Martini?

The Going Out Gurus: I am NOT touching a pork martini. No way. I'd rather have an Absinthe Cosmo, although they don't seem to serve those at dark wood bars, so I'll say a few fingers of a small batch bourbon -- maybe Woodford Reserve or Baker's. -- Fritz

Ballston: Hi guys,

Is anything special going on at Clarendon Ballroom tonight?

The Going Out Gurus: It's a haunted evening with Mr. Greengenes. Sure to be a scary time.

washington, dc: A friend claims there is a 24 hour sushi place somewhere in VA (Falls Church or the like?).

Oh, please say it is so! And say you know where it is!

The Going Out Gurus: Who can help us here?

alexandria, va: Gurus. When, oh when, will Dream cease its pathetic concert series? The Talent seems to be positioned only on the main dance floor, therefore all of us who don't want to listen to them gets crammed into the small top level! What do you make of this?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, alexandria, there aren't any live bands on the schedule until the 23rd, so you seem to be in luck. But after Rhome and I went to Howard's Homecoming weekend -- the Roots, Busta et. al -- I won't complain about live music at Dream. -- Fritz

RHPS: Visions' web site says:

Please be kind and respect our guidelines: NO WATER PRODUCTS, NO RICE, NO CONFETTI

The Going Out Gurus: Ouch. Thanks for letting us know. Still, that doesn't preclude anyone from dressing up in costumes and doing the "Time Warp," right?

Petworth: A Halloween soundtrack must include, among others:
"Boris the Spider" - the Who
"Scary Monsters" - David Bowie
"The Buffy theme" - from Buffy The Vampire Slayer
"Death on Two Legs" and "Who Wants to Live Forever" - Queen
"Tocatta and Fugue in D minor"
"My Ride's Here" and "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" - Warren Zevon

and oh so many more...

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have "Boris" on my mix, but not the others. Definitely have to do a volume two.

Adams Morgan: Would really love to find a place (preferably seedy bar) to go tonight that has pumpkin ale and darts or pool tables.

I need the Gurus help!

The Going Out Gurus: How 'bout Dr. Dremo's?
Haven't seen many places with both -- haven't seen much Pumpkin at all, outside of more, um, upscale bar (if you can call a place like Kramerbooks upscale).

Anyone else wanna help?

Baltimore MD: Halloween Mix. Can't forget "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Camper Van Beethovan (right?).

The Going Out Gurus: And another suggestion. You guys are good. You should get jobs working for K-Tel.

Baltimore After Hours: B-more has a handful of after hours places - I think parts of Redwood Trust are open until 4am and China Room downtown is after hours, and I know Club 1722 up by the Charles Theater.
100% per person more like it at Ruth's, by the way

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks.

Alexandria, VA: Hey there-

I just discovered you guys today! My girls and I were thinking about going to Adam's Morgan tonight and we were also considering taking advantage of the free cabs. How do you guys feel about these ideas?

Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, yes, yes to the free cabs. I love that service. Please, y'all, take advantage of them, okay? 1-800-200-TAXI. Free rides home.

As for Adams Morgan, it's probably the most active Halloween bar hopping scene in the city, if you want to dance and drink and stare at odd costumes.

Cigar bar: Shelly's Back Room is at like 20th and M, near Meiwah in the West End. Butler's: the Cigar Bar (at 1000 H Street, according to your e-guide) is the cigar place near the Press Club.

The Going Out Gurus: Actually, you're confusing Shelly's West End (20th and M) with the much smaller Shelly's Back Room (13th and F). I think I stand corrected, if that's what they meant. -- Fritz

Petworth: Pumpkin ale and darts are both available at Bedrock.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Petworth. I didn't see any Pumpkin ale on Monday, though, when I was in for the Young's Winter Warmer tasting. (Everybody who loves English ale, go now!).

So yeah, Pumpkin ale, darts, pool -- under one roof. -- Fritz

Free cabs home?: Please tell me more!

The Going Out Gurus: All you have to do is type "free taxi rides" or "free taxi" or something in the search box. But you can read about it here.

Washington, D.C.: Omniscient Gurus,
I know the weather is supposed to be frightfully cold this weekend, but I am supposed to have lunch with a girlfriend on Saturday or Sunday, then we were hoping to spend a little time outdoors. Are there any good festivals, exhibits, etc. outdoors in downtown DC this weekend? Any good suggestions for fun weekend lunch places downtown/Dupont would be appreciated as well. Thank you!

The Going Out Gurus: As for lunch near Dupont, Teaism is an easy bet or Johnny's Half Shell and Pizzeria Paradiso.

As for exhibits, nearby you could check out Bonnard at the Phillips or Miro, Here Is New York and Molecular Invasion at the Corcoran. Outdoor festivals are few, but you might check out the 20th anniversary of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial and stop in the nearby and oft-overlooked Art Museum of the Americas.

silver spring: Hi, I'm lame and heading out Friday night for my Halloween fix. I know there's something going on at Crush and something at the VIP club. Any other costumed festivities I should know about? And which one would you recommend?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Those are the main one, SS. Everyone had the Fri./Sat. parties last weekend, it seems. I'd take VIP over Crush. Bigger crowd, more variety of music. -- Fritz

Dupont Circle, Washington D.C.: Hi Gurus! I love your chats, but alas, have been unable to take advantage of Washington Entertainment for the last several months due to a ridiculous travel schedule. I'm looking at my first weekend at home in months (and probably my last weekend at home in the foreseeable future), and I need suggestions for how to really relish in a DC fall! Any ideas for theater, outdoor activities, great concerts, or other fun weekend stuff? Constraints: no car.

The Going Out Gurus: Welcome back, Dupont. Let's see what you can do before it's time to pack the suitcase again... Art-o-Matic begins today, a multimedia extravaganza of local creativity. I (Anne) completely forgot to recommend that to Arlington earlier! Man of La Mancha is the big ticket in town these days, and our colleague Janet only counted one too many "Impossible Dream[s]" when she saw it. I'm yip to your idea of getting outside -- the colors are really arriving now. It's easy to get to Roosevelt Island without a car. Or rent a bike -- Big Wheel Bikes in Georgetown can hook you up -- and take the trail toward Mount Vernon or up the C&O Canal Trail. Last week, I strolled through the zoo and Rock Creek Park. Mellow and yellow.

Pumpkin Ale: Bistro Bis has a nice pumkin ale...had it last week and it was yummy.

Also, meeting someone out for drinks in Dupont, but looking for something different. We love Brickskeller, Bistro du Coin, Johnny's Half Shell, etc. but need something new.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the pumpkin info.

If you dig cocktails, what about Savino's Lounge or Firefly? I like 'em both, and they're (fairly) new. For beer, I'm sticking with Kramerbooks. Most underrated beer bar in the city. -- Fritz

Free cabs: I have tried the free cab thing on many holidays and all I have ever got was a busy signal. Use the service if you can but have a back up plan as well.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. I've used it a few times - mostly last Christmas - with some success, but had to wait forever. Why can't Metro stay open late on this holiday? That might make things so much easier. -- Fritz

Baltimore, MD: Fritz, you need to set up some sort of English Beer fan club. It's hard for us Fuller's (and Youngs, etc.) fanatics to keep up with who's serving what where. Lordy I wish we had a real English pub (not brewpub) around here.

The Going Out Gurus: Me too. But Baltimore, you're lucky. Better British beers in Baltimore - esp. the two wharf rats and around Federal Hill - than we have here. -- Fritz

Rockville MD: How pathetic would I seem for going to 9:30 club Sunday night alone to hear J5 and Beatnuts? I'm a woman in my late 20s.

The Going Out Gurus: Not pathetic at all. I'd go with you but I'm not an advocate of the Beatnuts' performance acumen. But Big Daddy Kane? Come on, BIG DADDY KANE?!? You're pathetic if you don't go. - Rhome

Washington, DC: "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is by Bauhaus, not Camper Van Beethoven.

That said, how about "Spirits in the Material World"?

The Going Out Gurus: A good call. In the same vein, I (Jen) also nominate "Moon Over Bourbon Street" by Sting -- it's about a werewolf. Once you start thinking about this, you can honestly go on for days.

12th Floor Metro Center: Here's a good link for some creative last-minute costume ideas for tonight ...

http://www.readymademag.com/feature.html

The Going Out Gurus: For those in a panic. Thanks, 12th Floor.

dc: i'm trying to find a pair of cashmere/wool arm warmers...that i've seen in some magazines...any idea where i can find some?

The Going Out Gurus: No, but we're cozying up to the idea. Anyone else want to stick a limb out on this one?

Guru groupie: Anything goin' down this weekend? Got a pal in from the left coast, and we could use an idea or two to add to the mix. Must be cool, fun, and Metro-friendly (no wheels); day or night okay. Art-O-Matic and Spy Museum are already on the list -- what else?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm not a fan of the Spy Museum. I think it's an sham, but if you must see "James Bond's car!" by all means pony up. If the line is as long as it's been recently (around the corner long), either get timed tickets and come back or skip it.

Les Savy Fav are at the Black Cat, and that's always a good time. There are new movies from the European Union at the Kennedy Center and "Lawrence of Arabia" at the Uptown. Wait in line with Vace and snag balcony seats.

Find cheap thrills on the Mall: there's Trompe L'Oeil at the National Gallery and Arte Povera at the Hirshhorn.

Doug E. Fresh is reading from his children's book, "Think Again" at the Kennedy Center (part of the Multicultural Children's Book Festival) on Saturday at 2:30 on the dot. -- Kate

Ghoul in Need of a Haunt: Looking for something a little funkier to do for Halloween night, i.e. not Georgetown, not a bar crawl, not The Reef--Halloween night without costumes or music!?!--, NOT Polly Esther's. Am I guilty of wishful thinking? Know anything about the Brit-pop thing happening at Art-o-Matic? What about the festivities at Red? I'm definitely looking for something in the city, and something that involves bewitching brew...Can you help?

The Going Out Gurus: Cocktail Charities is having a fundraiser/costume contest at Stetsons. How about the bands/DJs (funk and hip-hop) and costumes at Chief Ike's? (Those are both in our listings, by the way.)

Art-o-Matic has two Britpop DJs, Jim Noble from Heaven/Panic, and a couple of good bands, including Janine Wilson. Should be fun.

Red - last I heard - was Saeed and Palesh tonight, but the e-mail said nothing about costume contests or anything like that. You have a scoop for us? -- Fritz

Real Ale: i would love a real British cask ale, is the best bet to drive out to the Dominion Brewery?

The Going Out Gurus: You could do. I have to dig up my old story on where to find real ale. John Harvard's has it. I really like the cask ale at Rock Bottom Arlington (not Bethesda). Nothing to compare to Adnams, Brakspear or Timothy Taylor's, though. -- Fritz

Petworth: Fritz-

Perhaps they have run out of it at Bedrock, but I was drinking it last Friday. It's all bottled, and it was the good pumpkin ale that tastes like a little pumpkin, and some spice, not the nasty one (Post Road?) that tastes like squash.

Now, I note that the bottle off the display had walked off, so perhaps it never got put back? In which case, they should have a lot of it left, 'cause no one knows they have it!

The Going Out Gurus: Hmmmm. The mystery deepens.

I don't like Post Road, either.

alexandria, va: Hey GOGs. I'm kinda stuck. Are there any clubs/coffee houses/hangouts in Adam's Morgan that aren't 21+ on Friday/Saturday nights?

The Going Out Gurus: Nope. Sorry. Everyone cards, unless you go to a restaurant and order food.

Dupont Circle: Is there anyplace fun in my hood to watch the election returns on Tuesday? I'm hoping for a liberal crowd, and I'd prefer to stay close to home in Dupont, rather than heading over to the Hill. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Don't you have a soft spot for the Tune Inn, don't you love their cheeseburgers? It's worth the distance. But if Dupont you must, try the Front Page, they have televisions. Also Timberlake's and Childe Harrold. In AM, Rocky's has only one, but take a seat at the bar and cry into your gumbo. -- Kate

Hinckley, OH: A friend of mine and I have been on a HUGE soup kick as of late. I'd like to surprise him with a spectacular soup joint. Where abouts should we go ? Whats your favorite?

The Going Out Gurus: What about Pho? That soup is hard to beat. What a meal and quel prix! -- Alexa

Silver Spring, MD: I've got a plan to share with you!!
Tomorrow night, my friends are planning a great time for a greater cause...Tomorrow night (nov. 1) ALL NIGHT, Willie & Reed's in Bethesda is giving 20% of their sales to the Carlos Cruz Education Fund!

Burnt Mills Elementary School in Silver Spring started this scholarship fund for Carlos Cruz, a 2nd grader whose mother, Sarah Ramos, was killed by the sniper in Montgomery County.

So come one, come all - help Burnt Mills get the fundraising going for Carlos Cruz!!!! Everyone welcome - no cover! Thanks, gurus, for spreading the word.

The Going Out Gurus: You're welcome.

Downtown D.C.:: This may be a dumb question, but I'm not from around here. Most of the clubs/bars here have VIP rooms-lines-etc. What makes a VIP a VIP? Do you pay higher cover? Do you become a member? Do you just have to "know someone?" And, how can I become one of the elite?

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, the old VIP question. There are several ways to get the special wristband. You can:

* Get on the promoters'/club's e-mail list or visit their website to print out flyers (see: www.vipclubdc.com, www.masouda.com or welcometodream.com)

* Buy a membership (Dream sells one for $300-600/year.)

* Dress well (I know several people who get bumped up at Ozio/VIP/Acropolis for looking good)

* Know someone (Still the easiest way). Tip your bartenders, be friendly to the doormen, make it known that you're a regular who spends money. That's what the VIP room is for, after all.

Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: My 12-year-old cousin is coming in for the weekend. I'm looking for some fun activities besides just going to a museum (museums are so uncool). I need some help! I don't think my aunt would appreciate me taking her to the bar!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, GP. Maura, Fritz and I (Anne) were just contemplating this question the other day, and our number one answer is: Walk down the street to Georgetown. No, shopping is not cultural, and I'm sure there's a Gap near where she lives too, but as I remember age 12, being without parents in a shopping mall = joy. Other things she may find novel: making s'mores at Cosi or her own stir-fry at Mongolian Grill in Bethesda. Now, I would also like to dispel the assumption that museums are ipso facto uncool. The Corcoran has a broad mix of exhibits now, all of them decidedly accessible for 12: the primary palettes of Miro, the somber photos of Here is New York, and the girly delights of Judith Lieber's handbags. If I'm way off base on her interests, here's Fritz's list of where to go if you're under 21.

M St. Bar Crawl: Fun or a bunch of overly crowded bars filled with overly drunk people?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes.

Rockville, Md.: Hey GOGs

Do you have any information on Half Moon Cafe in Silver Spring?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: When I lived in Silver Spring, I used to swing by. Cool, tiny little honky tonk with good like roots music. Grewat BBQ. -- Fritz

The Going Out Gurus: Songs that K-Tel won't have!. Spooky. Cool! - Rhome

Woodley Park: Happy Halloween GOGs!
My husband and I are sadly underdressed for Halloween having had no time to plan costumes this year. We want to go out tonight, to bars or similar venues, but are afraid that we will have to be dressed up. Do you have any suggestions for us? PS-we're in in our mid-20s. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Stay out of Adams Morgan and Georgetown. Dupont should be fine. And this is a good chance to visit all the new lounges and hotel bars -- Poste, Zola, Firefly, Topaz, Rouge, Toka, Le Bar, Savino -- that you might not have had a chance to visit. -- Fritz

Musical Trivia For The Gurus: If I say "of"
and ya'll say "a"
and I say "....revolution"

what would all the gurus say?

The Going Out Gurus: Yawn.

Dupont Girlie: HH Guru's!! Well, have to say the high heel race was awesome, it was my first time, and they looked beauitful!!
Question, having a mexican themed dinner party Friday and want to make purrrfect Sangria...I have read many recipes, but I want the best- please share!!

The Going Out Gurus: There's no such thing as a best recipe, too many possibilities. Pick some fruity flavors that go well together and that you like. (I'm partial to citrus and strawberries). Add a mixer of some sort (grape juice, red kool-aid, rock creek fruit punch soda... let your imagination be your guide) and some liquer of a flavor complimentary to the other ingredients you've assembled. Chiiiiiill. Be happy. - Rhome

Lexington Park, Md.: I'm meeting an old college friend for dinner and drinks Friday in Old Town Alexandria. Need some ideas for good place to eat and then grab a few beers. Some place that we will be able to carry on a conversation without having to yell. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Quick answer, cos we're almost out of time: Union Street Public House, Kingfish, Cafe Salsa, the Bayou Room (you can get good cajun food from upstairs in the bar). -- Fritz

Metro Center: Thinking about hitting Firefly tonight to try those bleu cheese olives someone mentioned on a previous chat. Where is it located again? I can't find the listing here online. Many thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hotel Madera on New Hampshire Ave., a few blocks south of the Circle. You can read my review here. And, like I said before, love them stuffed olives. -- Fritz

The Going Out Gurus: Wow. Loads and loads of questions today. Sorry if we couldn't get to you, but stay safe tonight. Use the Halloween guide. Join us here next week. Peace to Jam Master Jay.
