Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002; 1 p.m. EDT

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: It's raining out and I've got Fela's "Water No Get Enemy" in my head. Very fitting but maybe even more so because I caught that Antibalas show at the Black Cat last Saturday. Dope! Anyway, enough about me. You all have now had a week to peruse Fritz' spiffy front with day by day event breakdowns. How's it working out? We've got data coming to you in the next couple days about Bossa, Exit Bar and Local 16 too so stay tuned for them. And there's always excitement to be had at a Fertile Ground show. Don't let me have to tell y'all "I told you so" once they blow up huge. Okay... Maura, Jen, Fritz, Joe and Kate are chomping at the bit now so let's do this here thing. Oh, I almost forgot. I'm Rhome.

Bethesda, Md.: I just saw that Velocity Girl is playing another show at Black Cat on Saturday. Are they officially back together? Is there a new record?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda, this is Joe and all I know is that they are back together for this show. No word on a record or tour or anything like that.

Dupont Circle, Washington DC: Gurus!

Are the weekend lines at the Spy Museum still ridiculously long? Parents are coming in next weekend, and I thought I'd take them on Saturday (because I really want to see it too), but I'm wondering if it's just a better idea to let them go Monday while I'm at work and the crowds are thinner. Whaddya think?

And, incidentally, where do you think we should go to dinner Saturday night? I'm thinking Zola, Cafe Atlantico, Austin Grill--all Mall-convenient, mid-sized-check-but-nice sort of joints. But (embarrassingly) I've not been to any of them. Where would YOU go? (I'm not wedded to these three either; if you have a better idea, shoot.)

Cheers!

The Going Out Gurus: Dupont, play it safe and get your Spy Museumtix early if you like. Show up tonight or tomorrow, wait in any line, and get your tickets for Saturday. When you arrive with your parents, no wait in line. As for eating nearby, all three sound delish. Another idea: maybe Ten Penh? Have fun. -- Maura

U Streeter: Any news on Local 16? I want to try someplace new before going to the theater this weekend and, at least from the outside, it looks like one classy joint.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, U Streeter. Local 16 opened last Friday, and I've been in a few times already. It's as classy as you'd expect from the guys behind Eighteenth Street Lounge and Dragonfly - rich red walls, lotsa dark wood, chill lounge music (Les Hommes, last night), organic food from local farmers, framed photos of D.C. punk legends like the Bad Brains (no, I'm not making that up) and $6+ drinks. Very nice place to relax and have a cocktail with your well-off friends.

The deck, a favorite place for pizza-and-beer when it was Julio's, is pretty spiffy, too. Totally refurbished with lots of greenery and sconces on the walls. My piece is being edited, and it should be up tomorrow. -- Fritz

Bling Bling: Hey G.O.G.,
Last year a group of friends and I went together to this little family run farm in VA (2 hours drive) for some pumpkins patch fun. Although it was very nice with hot cider, pick-your-own pumpkins, and a corn maze the drive was way to long and everyone fell alseep in the car ride home. Do you know of any local places/farms that might be more of a cute day trip for just me and my girlfriend? Thanks a lot

The Going Out Gurus: Luckily, I'm all iced up, Bling. Kate here and I whole-hearted recommend a day or evening trip to Temple Hall Regional Farm Park in Leesburg, Va. They have a nine-acre corn maze. And this year the pattern is "American Gothic" so you weave your way up Maw's apron and down Paw's pitch fork. Just look at it. You can, in October, pick yer own pumpkin there too. The thing I really love about Temple Hall's maze is this: it's open until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Come Sunday, they're hosting an open house so expect plenty of kids (goats and human). -- Kate

Washington, D.C.: Where would you recommend eating before I check out the National Building Musuem? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: If you're thinking lunch, I enjoyed one recently at Poste. Otherwise Teaism is an easy fave. -- Maura

Bethesda MD: I heard that the Beatnuts are playing in Philly on Monday. Haven't seen anything about them playing in DC. Have they ever played DC. Anyone know?

The Going Out Gurus: The last time I saw the Beatnuts in DC was in 1994 at the OLD 9:30 Club. Also on the bill: Organized Konfusion, Artifacts, Common (the artist formerly known as Sense), Roc Raida and Mista Sinista. And in the audience jumping on stage for an impromptu freestyle session: Doitall of LOTUG. Oh the memories! - Rhome

Bored in Ballston: OMG! The Violent Femmes are in concert next week. Is it just me, or is it 1990 in here? I'm excited though, and can't wait. Have you heard anything about this show? I haven't seen them live in 7 years, wondering if they've still got it and if they'll be playing the old favorites....

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Ballston, this is Joe and I think all they have is old favorites. No, I'm sure it'll be a fun show at the 9:30 on Oct. 6.

Rosslyn, Va.: Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any information on the book fair/festival this weekend? Where/when/what's it like? Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Rosslyn. I (Jen) suspect you mean the Fall for the Book Festival, which is next weekend on the George Mason campus. It runs all day and into the evening on Thursday, Oct. 3 through Sunday the 6th. I've never been, but it sounds like a lot of fun. Some interesting writers (such as Matthew Klam) are participating. Plus it's free, so you've got nothing but time to lose. Also, keep in mind that the National Book Festival is coming up Oct. 12, not to mention a ton of other great book events. October is quite the month for literary-minded folk.

Fairfax, Va: I'm bored with the goth-industrial scene. Any suggestions for places to branch out and broaden my horizons. I'm a male in my early 30s who can blend just about anywhere.

The Going Out Gurus: Well then my formerly black leathered friend, you have many options. Do you want to dance? Do you like live music? Do you just want to chill and talk to people? How about we throw out all the different scenes in DC and you pick one then we'll offer specific suggestions? Let's see... reggae music, african music, slam poetry, open mic poetry, latin dancing, live jazz, piano bars, lounges, electronic music (house, d'n'b, techno), swing dancing, hip-hop, punk, coffee houses. Am I getting warm yet? - Rhome

Alexandria, Va.: So what was Exitbar like? I know that it was at a sportsbar, but for me the music ismore important than the locale. Pray tell.

The Going Out Gurus: Good thing, then, Alexandria, because the music was ten times better than the location. I have to admit that I wasn't it expecting it to be as good as it was. Yeah, there were the usual suspects - Suede, Stone Roses, Pulp (but no "Common People," that I heard) - but plenty of Ladytron, the Streets, Athlete, Spearmint, and other slightly-obscure bands. If you're a trainspotter (or a track-spotter), you should have a good time.

As far as the location, because other people are asking: Dance floor small. Bar huge. Framed Redskins posters/schedules numerous. Sound not evenly distributed throughtout the room, so the farther you were from the DJ/speakers, the more dea/muffled everything sounded. But it was enjoyable, and a good break from the Mousetrap/Bliss routine.

Oh, and my long review is being edited, so that will (hopefully) be up tomorrow as well. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Where can two late 20s women who are desperately in need of a good time so that they may forget this crap-ridden week go for a crazy good time this weekend? We are up for anything but here's a hint -- we would like to dance but not feel like the oldest broads in the joint!

The Going Out Gurus: Wouldn't we all. I think you two should head to Five. Rhome is down with their DJs on Fridays and Saturdays -- and everything he likes is, let's face it, timelessly cool. But it sounds like you could use a real treat. Get the pedicure of a lifetime at Nail Villa (2930 M St., DC 202-337-0882). You get a wonderful, long foot/calf massage and a sweet scrub and polish. Not bad for $30, and another reason to wear the sexiest sandals you have. PS. There's a lot to be said for younger men. Or so I gather. -- Kate

Pete and Repeat: Pardon me if this was already asked, but I couldn't find it in the archives or searches. Isn't there an Alexandria beer festival happening soon? Thanks for any info you may have on it.

The Going Out Gurus: It's okay, Pete. (Or are you repeat?) Did you just search for "beer festival"? I did, and got the Mid-Atlantic Oktoberfest, which is taking place in Shirlington (not Alexandria) on Oct. 12. I'll be there. You? -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Okay, so the Gurus don't travel as a pack. But where's the best place to see two Gurus at the same time?

The Going Out Gurus: Actually, there's just one guru with multiple personalities. It's as if Sybil was a guru.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: What's the scoop on Juste Lounge by the new convention center? Went to Cherry Red's show last weekend (very, very funny, btw) and there were a ton of people streaming in and out of Juste, which is next door. Is this a must check out place?

The Going Out Gurus: Juste seems to be building up steam. I went there on a Wednesday night once, black professional crowd, mainstream/radio hip-hop, personable cutie pie waitresses serving a bevy of martini specials. Not bad. There's two floors. Upstairs features a bar and a backroom of tables, downstairs is a small but adequate dancefloor area. There's house music there on Thursdays that I've been meaning to check out. - Rhome

Washington, D.C.: Trying to plan a 30th birthday party on a Saturday night in a restaurant or bar where we can have space for about 75 people -- perhaps a private room or some situation where we will have room for that many people to come celebrate. Any suggestions for local venues?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. I (Jen) resort to my usual references on this question: Check out Fritz's round-up of party spots and my round-up of rehearsal dinner locations. These two features give a good overview of places that have private rooms and rent them out (many of the rehearsal dinner places can be used for birthday parties and the like.) Scan through these two features and see if that helps.

Alexandria, Va.: Have season tickets to Signature Theater near Shirlington, and looking for places to eat. Caryle Grand leaves me cold, and the Dupont Luna is SO much better than the Shirlington. Any non-chains nearby?

The Going Out Gurus: Lucky old you, Alexandria. The current production, "What the Butler Saw" is wickedly funny (and, I must also admit, directed by one of my all-time favorite people). How about the roast chicken at Whitey's? Or the tiny Thai Singh on Wilson Bvd. or block-buster burgers at Ray's the Steaks (ignore the name, their burgers be they beef, tuna or portobello are two-handed heaven). -- Kate

Alexandria, Va.: Boyfriend's coming in to town this weekend. He used to live here a year ago. Where can I take him thats new to the area? Musuems? Restaurants? Thanks dear

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Alexandria. Maura here. Try this handy roundup of new bars and lounges, courtesy of Fritz, of course. As for restaurants, maybe 15 ria or Zola, And for new museums, there's the Botanic Garden (new last December, actually), Spy Museum and lots of new shows: Joan Miro and Here is New York, both at the Corcoran, are good bets.

Washington DC: So, what do people do on Tuesdays? I'm looking for something relatively mellow, and preferrably cheap.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes my peoples, what DO you do on Tuesdays? Open mic poetry at Mango's or old school night with Grits-N-Gravy at Bohemian Caverns? - Rhome

Drinks: Fritz, noticed your comment on the price of drinks at Local 16 and didn't get a chance to respond to someone who was complaining last week about the price of drinks at the Reef (btw Red Hook is always $3).

While everyone would love inexpensive drinks, you have to admit that we've been pretty spoiled in this town for a while with the price of drinks. I seem to recall spending $6 for a CAN of Rolling Rock at CBGB in New York in '92!

If you want to spend your hard earned money on an intangible and on something other than PBR, well, you can't really complain about a $5 beer.

The Going Out Gurus: You're right. Drinks in this town are dead cheap. Try cocktail bars in New York, London or L.A. if you think this is overpriced.

I included the price in my Local 16 review because I'm astonished that a single Red Stripe costs $6. I think people would like to know what they're getting into when they go, especially if it sounds really cool but they don't have lots of loot to drop.

That said, you're right about intangibles. Bass costs more at the Reef than other places in Adams Morgan, for example. But the Reef's atmosphere, decor and no-crowding policy are worth more to me than the few bucks I might save if I had the beer somewhere else.

And while I do like my cheap beer (Dietle's Tavern, Lil' Pub, Raven), I'll also gladly pay $6/8/whatever for Chimay on draft at the Reef, or Delirium Tremens at Chez Antoine, or drop $8 for one of Leiann's cocktails at Rouge. To me, it's worth it. -- Fritz

Signal 66?: I realize they just had an opening recently, but I missed it. I've only ever gone there during an opening, so I wondered what it's like on a non-opening night?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, picture a lot less people and no live music. Party or not, I think it's still one of Washington's most interesting galleries. I, myself, have yet to catch, but am intrigued by the new Tom Downing show. Enjoy. -- Maura

Logan Circle: Gurus...

What are your thoughts on Exit Bar? I thought it was alright... fine enough. Good music, but the sports bar backdrop clashed pretty heavy with the scene. Kind of hard to look like a hip modster standing next to framed pictures of Joe Theisman, but oh well. Not sure if I'd pay the cover charge for such a small dance floor though. Can't wait for another option like the new Metro.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the comments, Logan. I'll admit the football photos were a bit weird. And how about that lighting? It was scary - I don't think I've ever seen some of the people there in such a well-lit setting.

repeat: Well, it's a micro brew thing and I'm 99% sure it's in Alex...Is there a way to check for micro brews? Do they scoff the macros and look down upon them?

The Going Out Gurus: Did you click on the link? This is the one with 30+ local and regional breweries (Victory, Old Dominion, Stoudt's, Cap City, Sweetwater, Frederick, etc.) and some imports. No Bud. No Miller Lite. I'm almost positive it's what you're talking about. If not, it's something that I haven't heard of. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Three women in their early 30s getting together downtown for Happy Hour. Last week Old Ebbit was a bit dull for our tastes. Also been too Dragonfly and Poste recently. Looking for something new in NW with good martinis and bar chit-chat.

The Going Out Gurus: Old Ebbit is Dullsville (note: not Dulles). Have you peeked inside Ortanique? It's got a brezzy, pan-Caribbean flow and beautiful lighting. I had a light supper and a cocktail at Zola last Friday night and that was a pretty snappy scene. Red and white and the crowd was definately old enough to pay for themselves. I'm a fool for the martini's at Le Bar in the Sofitel, but Fritz sofitells me that Patrick (the excedingly French long-faced bar man has picked up and moved to Florida), but I'm sure they've got a similarly talented person in his stead. -- Kate

West End, DC.: Two questions today:

1. Settle an office bet? We are located at 20th and M NW. Is this properly the "West End" of DC? I've heard the phrase a few times and actually kind of like it. If I'm not in it, is there a West End that I don't know about? Am I making this up? If so, where am I!? (Does the existential crisis show?)

2. Wherever I am, there are literally 5 burrito joints within a block or two, so my lunch hankerings for Mexican are easily satisfied. But what about my dinner-time hankerings? The Reader's Poll suggests that Lauriol Plaza is the bext Mexican in town. I'm praying this isn't true. Answer my prayers, o Gurus.

thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) always thought the West End was in London, but that's just me. According to Fritz and Kate, you are in D.C.'s West End, which is the area between downtown and Georgetown. (Chatters, feel free to argue.) Existential crisis averted -- this also means that, as the Pet Shop Boys suggested, you can go running down, underground, to a dive bar in a West End town.
And I'm going to be lame and throw your Mexican question out to the group, too. If not Lauriol, where should a West Ender go?

re: Tuesday nights: There's always the 8-ball tournament at Zack's on Capitol Hill.

The Going Out Gurus: That'll work.

Washington DC: Hey guys, It's my Birthday tomorrow and I'm coming back to DC to celebrate. I'm turning 24, and haven't spent too much time in DC over the past couple of years. Any suggestions on a fun place to go with some friends tomorrow and saturday night? I've been living in NYC and Miami, so I like the night life. Thanks for the help..

The Going Out Gurus: Details! We need details of what you like! I can hazard a guess from your NYC and Miami references that you might want to jiggy it up a bit? How about bouncing around the south-of-Dupont area for starters? Ozio, Andalu, 1223. There's always your VIP and Dream too. - Rhome

DC: Speaking of the old 9:30, do any of you remember when it moved? I'm thinking it was '96ish, but the memory is fading.

The Going Out Gurus: DC, I was at the last-ever show, with Trouble Funk. Ahhh, memories. Based on the girl I was dating at the time, I', fairly certain the last show at the old space was New Year's Eve, 1995. -- Fritz

Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: Good afternoon on this rainy day GoG's!

Just recently becoming a part-time grad. student again, I have found myself meeting up with teams all over the city for meetings, etc. Where do you guys think is the best place for a study group to meet? Can't be too quiet because then we'll disturb people. Can't have too loud music (Cosi/Xando tends to get like this at night). Any ideas? Preferably in NW D.C. but I'm open to Arlington as well. And this wouldn't probably be either on the weekend mornings or weeknights.

You guys are the best. And fellow clicksters, please chime in!

The Going Out Gurus: Not to support the notion of mega-corporate chains or anything, but have you tried Starbucks? I (Jen) think they tend to be a bit quieter at night than Xando, though I could be wrong. You might also try community centers or private rooms at libraries. If you're in a room separate from the rest of the facility, you won't disturb anyone and you won't have to contend with noisy chatter and music.
Like Glover said: fellow clicksters, chime in at will.

Glover Park, DC: Hey GoGs,
Wanted to report back to you guys on how the bachelorette went. Fritz recommended Habana Village in Adams Morgan and it was exactly what we needed! Lots of room to dance and uh, you were right Fritz, I think everyone spoke Spanish there. It was a great night for the bride-to-be (who married a brazilian lad on Sunday) with many good-tasting mojitos. Anyway, I didn't know any of the dances which everyone seemed to instantly know but there were plenty of nice people there to show us how to machacha, merengue and salsa. And it wasn't one of those places where guys come up surreptiously behind you and start to freak you. Though I did notice the guy to girl ratio was like 5:1 or something which was pretty nice for us!

Adios!

The Going Out Gurus: Another satisfied customer. Now you can go work on that bachata some more, watch out for the dancefloor pimps though. - Rhome

Foggy Bottom: I've heard Blues Alley is "expensive". How much would it cost for 3 people to go for an evening?

Thanks!!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Foggy Bottom, this is Joe and I guess it depends on what expensive means to you. I've just looked at the October schedule for the club and most shows are in the $25-30 range. Dinner entrees run from $16-23. I think that if you don't have dinner, there is probably a two drink minimum, but they may have changed that rule. Still, it's a great place for jazz lovers, nice and small, and people who take the music seriously. It's a real jazz club.

Washington, D.C.: Okay, I know you're the Going Out Gurus, but my question is about shopping. There is nowhere in D.C. to shop for Going Out clothes! With very few exceptions (Kaur, All About Jane and the other Adams Morgan shops), the only place to buy anything cute is at chains and department stores. Am I missing something? Are there hole-in-the-wall boutiques for cute, not-brand-name clothes anywhere in the city?

The Going Out Gurus: We GOGs like shopping questions too. I had to wrestle this one away from Joe. There are more cute boutiques outside the city -- Luna in Bethesda, American in Paris in Alexandria -- as well as chains with more original options than department stores (Anthropologie will open a second location in Tysons Galleria), but those offer little no-name options. On that end, maybe readers have ideas? -- Maura

Mexican delight!: Aleros in Clev Park... Great salsa and margs, and oh so cheap!

The Going Out Gurus: But what about sangria?

Rolling Stones tix: My mother is taking me to see the Stones at FedEx Field on Oct. 4. I've done some research and found that there is definitely a shuttle from the Metro to FedEx Field on game nights, but I can't find any info to confirm if there's a shuttle for other events. So am I condemned to having to drive out there? Or is there a shuttle for concert nights, too? And if there is a shuttle, any advice (from the Gurus or the Peanuts) on whether it's better to drive or take the shuttle?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi RST, this is Joe and our friend Brooke Kent at ClearChannel just told me that there will be shuttle for the Stones show from the Addison and Landover metro stations. Taking the metro will certainly be cheaper since you won't have to pay for parking.

Mexican: Mixtec in Adams Morgan, not your everyday burrito.

I could have sworn I paid $40 for a pedicure at Nail Villa (although worth every penny, like you said)

The Going Out Gurus: I knew my real mexican food lovers would represent for Mixtec. Word! - Rhome

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gog:

You guys are the best.

Taking housemate out Friday for his birthday celebration. Was thinking about the swing dance/big band place in Tysons Corner that does the Friday night parties but could not remember the name. HELP!

Or as an alternative perhaps hear some good jazz music -- preferably in Alexandria but willing to consider Arlington/Falls Church areas. Or anyplace reasonably close.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Swing dancing with a big band on Friday ... Ohhhhhhh. I was stumped there for a minute. You're thinking of the Tom Cunningham Orchestra's old gig at America Restaurant in Tysons II. Sorry, but the swing night ended when the restaurant closed in 2000 (I think it was 2000). If you want to go swing dancing on Friday, there are live bands and lessons at the Chevy Chase Ballroom in Washington or Zoots out in Fairfax.

Um, good jazz in Alexandria/Arlington/Falls Church. Try Basin Street Lounge in Old Town or Bangkok Blues in Falls Church. -- Fritz

Arlington, Va.: Dear Gurus --

You are a bright spot in an otherwise dull city -- is it just me? I moved here from L.A. and I miss the glamour and I miss the well-groomed men. Where are they? And not the cheap ones I keep meeting. I want to date a millionaire, Gurus. Don't hang me, I said date, not marry -- this is not a mission. Where can an attractive mid-30s woman find a fun, stylish, not cheap date?

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, you've made me a little nervous, but let me see if I can at least set you off in the right direction.
Cafe Milano might be a good place to start. It seems to attract, on occassion, the sort of fellow who -- and how best to say this -- wouldn't want to marry you either. You might also find the better-groomed at the bar at the Ritz Carlton on 23rd. Skip the bar inside their resto, Grille, and head directly to the oaky bar off the lobby. While you wait for someone else to pick up your tab, dine on wasabi peas. They're free! Given recent portfolio performances of MCI and AOL, I might recommend spending less time trolling for Daddy Warbucks along the Dulles corridor. Zola attracts a smartly dressed crowd. Alternatively, if you can talk your way inside the VIP rooms at VIP and Dream and ESL, you might like what you see. -- Kate

RE: West End: I've always thought that area (from Farragut North metro past Lulu's) was called Mid-town. A little out of Dupont, and not yet Georgetown....

The Going Out Gurus: Here we go. I knew there'd be disagreement on this.
"Who's right? Who's wrong?" I (Jen) don't know, but I think the best way for me to handle this issue is by quoting '80s pop songs. That last one was "What Have You Done For Me Lately" by Janet Jackson.

GoG's Rule My World: Crappy week and I won't even be here this weekend, but hanging out with you guys this hour has made my day cheerier.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks and right back at you. It is a gloomy day, isn't it. We usually have a magnificent view of the mall from our office but today we can barely even make out the Washington monument.

Somewhere, USA: so should you tip based on the price of the drink, or is bar tipping more standard- e.g., a few bucks per round? should you tip more for an $10 martini as opposed to a $5 one?

The Going Out Gurus: Somewhere, we had a brief survey on tipping on a previous Got Plans, and I think we decided that it was about $1 per drink minimum, and up from there based on service, how complicated the drink was and how much you liked it. If you're running a tab, people were tipping around 20 percent at the end. -- Fritz

Washington DC: The best burritos: Mixtec is the most authentic. Also there's a place next to Two Quail on Mass Ave down near Union Station that's really good (I can't remember the name). But I must say I hear from good sources that the best Mexican is Two Amigos in Del Ray.

The Going Out Gurus: A trio of recommendations. Muchas gracias.

Waiting for 5pm: When is Bossa on 18th scheduled to open? Have you heard any scoop on what it will be like?

The Going Out Gurus: Bossa made a surprise opening last Thursday, and I've been in a few times. It's a really nice organic restaurant with a cozy, candlelit lounge upstairs. Great tapas. Cool art. Occasional live music. The review should (again) hopefully be up tomorrow. -- Fritz

Arlington VA: The Isabella Stewart Garndner Museum in Boston is my favorite place in the world. Is there any place in DC that might make me as happy?

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, I think Washington's equivalent might be the Phillips Collection (part of which is under rennovation, fyi). You might also check out the Walters in Baltimore or -- on a smaller and more modern scale -- the Kreeger on Foxhall Road. -- Maura

Going Out Clothes: What about Betsy Fisher or Proper Topper in lower Dupont or the boutiques in Georgetown- BCBG, Betsy Johnson, Urban Outfitters?

The Going Out Gurus: Betsy Fisher and Proper Topper are very good bets. As for Urban Outfitters, one shouldn't shop there too much over the age of 23.

London calling: I was in school in London for the last year, and every week the school hosted a club where the music was fantastic, slightly cheesy pop - i.e. dancable with words, like "One More Time" by Daft Punk and Kylie's "Can't Get You Out of My Head." Anyplace in DC that has a night like that, with sort-of current dancable pop and little or no hip-hop? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: For Kylie AND Daft Punk, your best bets are Confusion or Bliss, both monthly at the Black Cat. And Bliss' two-year anniversary is Sat. I know Will (Bliss) will play "Can't Get You Out of My Head" - he usually does, although I'll bug him to spin the Kylie-vs-New Order remix. Oh, and I won't forget the British Invasion tonight at Marx Cafe. Ask nicely. -- Fritz

G'town: For the shopping chatter: there's a cool new boutique down at the spiffy new Pentagon Row called "What's In"... checked it out last weekend and they have some great stuff.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the in-put.

14th & N.Y., Washington, D.C.: Hi GOG's-

Random question here. I recently heard some music by the Roots and LOVE it! Any suggestions on where I can go and listen to similar type music?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: You want to check out some dope live hip-hop music? Let's see, as for national acts, keep an eye out for Black Eyed Peas (not much of a fan of their lyrics but their shows have mad energy), Jurassic 5 (true showmen), Bullfrog, Blackalicious... there are others I'm forgetting, but I'm really particular about hip-hop in the live context. Make sure you hit Black Lily, which isn't hip-hop but will have a vibe I guarantee you'll appreciate. DC has a thriving hip-hop scene but we've just run out of venues to play in. Try the showcase known as The Set that happens at Five every other Thursday. I'll put in a record for that soon as well as the next Groove Gumbo showcase coming up. A few local groups whose music you should seek out and stay abreast of their gig schedules: Opus Akoben, CrossRhodes, Poem-Cees and Urban Ave 31. - Rhome

Whitey's?: Why does everyone like Whitey's so much? The burgers are overdone and flavorless, and their signature "broasted" (which is apparently the new way to spell "fried") chicken is, while admittedly very moist, equally insipid--I'd rather go a mile down the street to El Pollo Rico, where you can get a moist AND tasty chicken for half as much.

The Going Out Gurus: So do that. If you don't like Whitey's, don't do. I don't mind a burger and a PBR. -- Fritz

Maryland :): I've been hearing about the Taste of Bethesda coming up soon...When/Where/How Much money does it cost?? Any reviews of past years?
Thank!

The Going Out Gurus: It is coming up, next Saturday in fact. Here's some info. It doesn't cost anything to enter, but you have to pay for food tickets. I (Jen) don't remember how much the tickets cost, but larger entrees are four or more tickets, smaller items might be only one or two. It's a pretty decent event, a good opportunity to try Bethesda eats. But it's also quite crowded, so be prepared for that. Fortunately, there's beer there, too, which tends to make me far more tolerant of my fellow man (and woman).

Re: Violent Femmes: They were on late-night last week (Leno? Connan?) and playing the old suff. It was heaven to see. Wish I had the $ to go to the concert. Vive le Femmes!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the update.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Hey gurus --

My friends and I were all set to karaoke at Millie and Al's tonight, but we heard it's Georgetown Senior Night -- yikes. Do you know if they are closing it to the public altogether? We're gonna hit Peyote Cafe instead -- thoughts on that for karaoke? Good stuff?

Thanx!

The Going Out Gurus: Not closed to the public, but it probably should be. It's a beer sodden, drunken mess. (No offense, Hoyas, but I've been. Then again, I'm a Terp For Life with the keychain to prove it.)

Peyote's not bad, but it gets Hella-crowded. -- Fritz

food near Signature Theater: Oh, I hope this isn't too late! Try the new Lebanese place at Shirlington--Aladdins. I ate there last weekend and it truly was fantastic.

The Going Out Gurus: Not too late, thanks for the tip!

22202: If you're willing to leave the West End/Mid-town, Santa Fe Cafe in Rosslyn has minimal atmosphere but amazing New Mexican (as in Albuquerque and Las Cruces) food. They ship their chiles in from the Hatch valley (green) and Chimayo (red). And their pink house margaritas rock!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for reminding me to go back there and check it out. Yes!

Coffeehouse: Common Grounds Coffeehouse in Clarendon (across from the Silver Diner) is the best damn coffeehouse in the area. Great music, great people, good coffee, ridiculously good food, and it's good for studying, too (tip: the music is usually kept pretty low, but the speaker in the back room is a little too powerful for the size of the room, so if the music is too loud, stuff one of the pillows from the sofa in between the speaker and the wall).

The Going Out Gurus: We consistently get kudos on the good Common Grounds. Take heed, all!

Arlington: Some friends and I have some plans to play a kickball tournament on the Washington Monument grounds around 4:00 tomorrow. From what you have heard, will we be able to play, or will we be swamped with protesters?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Arlington, this is Joe. Wow, I knew kickball was controversial, but I didn't know people were protesting it. It is kind of a dangerous sport though with that big red ball bouncing off of people's heads.

Green Bay Transplant: Are there any Green Bay Packer friendly bars where can a guy from GB can go to route for the Pack with his fellow sconnies?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, GB Transplant. I know the Pack was meeting at the Rock last season. Not sure where they are now (anyone?), but I heard they get a few at Mr. Days in Clarendon. -- Fritz

Birthday...: I like the scene, but nothing too crazy....probably more lounge than dancing, or at least a place that isn't overtaken by the dance floor and obnoxiously loud music. I went to Cities, 18th Street lounge and blue room last time I was in town, but If there's new stuff, I'd love to check it out.
I heard about a big new place that opened in NE maybe...a uber-club of sorts. Also, can a place that actually names itself VIP really be cool? Thanks for the help

The Going Out Gurus: The uber-club is Dream. VIP can be cool depending on what you prefer. Both spots are huge, have multiple rooms and lavish fancy decors. Both can run you a fair chunk of change and demand a higher standard of dress. If you're balling it's all good. - Rhome

K Street, Washington, D.C.: Despite the protestors, my girlfriends and I are heading to Zola, and Poste tonight for some cocktail sipping. Have you all found that Thursady's are a good night to hit these spots? Any favorite drinks?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, yes, yes. I've been to both on Thursday/Friday nights, and both are great places for a drink. At Zola, the Spytini is great. Estonian vodka and Napoleonic brandy, if I remember correctly. Also liked the drink with the mint in it (sorry, don't have my notes in front of me). I tried every drink on the menu, and liked most of them. Bar snacks are also good.

The cocktail list at Poste is kind of on the sweet side, but I liked the First Class. I know they have the legal Absinthe, too, so you can try that, if you dare. Doug from Trading Spaces was drinking red wine there a few weeks ago. -- Fritz

Bethesda, MD: Hi Gurus!
Help! My parents are in town this weekend and I can't think of anything fun to do with this rainy weather. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: If it makes you feel better, Bob Ryan tells me it's supposed to clear up by Saturday morning. But if the weather is sour, I (Jen) recommend seeing a film at Landmark Cinemas. I'd tell you to go downtown and visit some museums, but I'm not sure if the protests will dissuade you. If you're game, you could always visit a place that's a little farther away from the action, like the Phillips Collection.

Fairfax, VA: Hi Gurus,

I'm turning 30 next month and want to get some spa treatment. I am in need of a new hairstyle, but need a stylist who can sit down with me and explain what might look best with my face. (Can't figure out if it's round, long, or oval.) Also would like some makeup application/skin care tips, and maybe even a manicure, pedicure, and massage as well. I would prefer that all of this be provided by someone who can approximate the English language, since communication is required.

I'm thinking of a new place called Dante Salon in Fairfax. Have you heard anything about it? Any other recommendations for something reasonably priced?

The Going Out Gurus: Looking for the works, Fairfax. I might try an Aveda salon -- Bethesda or Georgetown -- or Bluemercury. -- Maura

22202 again: Karaoke: Saturday night at Freddie's on 23rd St. in Arlington is fabulous. I've seen a great mix of karaoke regulars, gay regulars, gay karaoke, and tourists/businessmen staying in Crystal City. Drinks are muy cheap. And I love that midway through the evening, the manager does a walk-through to re-sprinkle the glitter and confetti on the floors.

The Going Out Gurus: Great idea. But I think they were looking for tonight. So, ladies, if you want to wait ... -- Fritz

Metro Maryland: As much as I enjoy going into DC for the "bar scene" ...sometimes, i'm just not in the mood to sit in a dark bar and drink every night of the week after work! Do you have any suggestions for fun things to do/see around the city this fall during the after-work hours (say 6 pm on...when most museums are closed!)...esp. things for 20-year-olds that are relatively cheap and easy/quick enough to get to from the bethesda area?

The Going Out Gurus: There are off-beat movies at the Hirshhorn (free), Library of Congress and Visions ($8). Maura's seen the new IMAX at Air and Space: it's all about choppers. October is jam-packed with excellent author readings, most of them free. Among the writers coming to town: Salman Rushdie, Dave Eggers, Chuck Palahnuik, Michael Chabon, Barbara Kingsolver, Joyce Carol Oates. There's a pay-what-you-can performance of "Recent Tragic Events" at Theater J this weekend. I know you're most interested in after work alternatives, but I just want to use this as an example. Most p-w-y-c's take place early on in a play's life, and early on in the week. Pay close attention to Jen's theater section for more ops. Bike the monuments at night. City Bikes offers a cool tune-up class every once in a while. Hit a farmers market with a friend and make dinner. Too overwhelming? Take a cooking class. There's plenty: comb our database. Go cwazy. -- Kate

Dupont: Wow--gotta disagree about Le Bar. Went Tuesday night, and even at 5:30, the room was in disarray and I was strongarmed by a bad bartender who COULDN'T FIND A DRINK MENU into an $11, not good, glass of wine.

The Going Out Gurus: Damn. Yeah, I don't think it's been the same since Philippe left. He was a heck of a bartender. -- Fritz

Just wanna dance: Hi Gurus,
I was hoping to a hit a downtown club this Friday -- VIP or Platinum. Any sense whether the know-nothing protestors who plan to destroy the city during the day plan to rage on during the night, all the while hurting small business people while claiming to be down with the people?

The Going Out Gurus: Ha. Like the anti-Capitalists would go floss in the VIP room at VIP or Platinum. Black bandanas probably won't get you past the bouncers.

Ewwwww.....: Okay, you're right. That post from the person who wants to meet rich men was just creepy. Sometimes I fear for the future of the human race.

The Going Out Gurus: Sometimes I fear for the rich men. And ladies. All of a sudden Mariah's "Glitter" makes more sense. Note to self: must re-rent. -- Kate

Go Pack Go: Re: the Packers...the Wisconsin State Society is rumored to be gathering people at a theater out in Arlington somewhere for games...they've been lost since Mr. Day's downtown closed a couple years ago. As for me, I'm going to the Hawk and Dove Sunday...they'll have all the games on...but one of the rooms in back usually becomes the "Packer room"

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Pack, Thanks!

Dupont Circle, Washington DC: Hi gurus,

Just wanted to thank you for your suggestion the other week of Neyla for a birthday dinner. The decor was gorgeous and the food was fabulous! We had a great time. Happy Birthday Katherine!

The Going Out Gurus: I'm so pleased! And wasn't the service sharp too? -- Kate

14th and L: Well if 20th and M is West End/ Foggy Bottom, where does that leave me??

The neighborhoods in DC are confusing!!

The Going Out Gurus: Farragut. Sorry.

Sheepish Pete: That's it! I don't know much in the way of Va...kind of scares me...I thought Shirlington was far away...Thanks so much, sorry to have taken chat time away..wish I had a tip in exchange.

The Going Out Gurus: No problem, Pete. That's why we're here. You just owe me a glass of Victory's Oktoberfest, okay? See you there. -- Fritz

Petworth: Mexican- Mixtec. Every time! The mole is amazingly good.

Ok, with occasional trips to El Tamarindo. They are a bit more Salvadoran, but...

Forget Lauriol Plaza. So not worth the time, money, or calories.

There are a few good divey Salvadoran places in Mt Pleasant too. I like them better than bad mexican.

The Going Out Gurus: I'll take that, Pet. How about El Paraiso?

Green Bay Games:: Well, before my upstairs neighbors got DirecTV last year, they often went to Mr. Days (but the one in DC) for Packers Games. There was a healthy pro-Green Bay crowd when I went. But that was quite a while ago.

The Going Out Gurus: Cheeseheads represent.

Alexandria, VA: GOG's,
You guys rock. What do you think about the Union Street Public House in Old Town? Do they have any good (or just different) beer on tap or anything? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. Virginia Native. Good stuff. -- Fritz

Dupont Circle, Washington DC: Re: Le Bar--Eric Brace called Bass an Irish beer in his review for Le Bar. Could someone give him 40 lashes with a wet noodle and then correct the mistake before this Irish rose faints from offense?

The Going Out Gurus: You know, I called him on that as soon as the article ran. He sheepishly apologized, but I don't think there was ever a correction. I'll see what I can do. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: If you go cook soup, water you go use?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm feeling you! But have you heard Femi's version with D'Angelo, ?uestlove and Macy Gray? I can't wait for the Red, Hot & Riot album. - Rhome

Georgetown, Washington DC: Hey GOG crew-

As Oct. 31st approaches, do you know of any cool haunted houses- the kind where they just scare the heck out of you? I heard something about some haunted woods in Manassas but have no idea where...

Thanx!

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) don't know from Manassas, but I do know there's a great haunted forest in Poolesville, Md. in Montgomery County. It's the Markoff's Haunted Forest -- we don't have info on the site yet, but we will, so check back. (In the meantime, here's the Web site.) Going to Poolesville is scary enough. But this place is even scarier. It's way in the middle of nowhere, and once you park your car, the guys actually drive you on a tractor to the point where the forest starts. I did a story on it once, and walked it during the day while one of the guys gave me a tour, and I was still freaked. I'd have heart failure if I went at night. So, in other words, go. It runs every weekend from Oct. 12-Nov. 2; it's $10 a person, and $15 closer to Halloween. A little pricey, but worth it. And I think the money goes to the adventure camp for kids that the Markoff brothers run.

Adams Morgan, Washington DC: Fritz - I had no idea you are an anorak?

Anyone know the Web site for Local 16? And do they take reservations? Been packed every night I've walked by this week. Looks very good.

The Going Out Gurus: I'm plenty Anorak. Three places open in one weekend and I'd hit them all by Sunday night, plus a few other places for reviews. No Web site for Local 16 yet, but you can call 202/265-2828 to try to make a reservation. From my experiences, it fills up later in the evening, not earlier. -- Fritz

Washington, DC: Is it true that the Jaleo people are opening a carribean restaurant? Is it already open? What can you tell us?!

The Going Out Gurus: I'm not sure it's going to be Carribean. You're thinking of the new place in the Pepco Building, Zaytinya, that the brains behind Jaleo will open soon.

Incidentally, Jimmy and Sharon Banks (Fish Wings 'n' Tings, Hibiscus Cafe, Red Ginger) are opening up a new place at E and 8th, with another islandy title, Ginger Cove(top level) and Ginger Reef. -- Kate

Dupont Circle, Washington DC: I meet an old friend who comes in to DC
on the orange line every week or so for
drinks. We usually end up at a place in
the Circle: Biddy's, Savino's, etc, which we
like, but we also haven't found anything
near the Farragut West metro stop, which
is more of a halfway point for the both of
us. Can you recommend a bar for a
couple of 30-somethings in that area?
Sometimes we meet after work,
sometimes we meet on Saturday night.
The Bottom Line perhaps? Many thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: McCormick and Schmick's, Le Bar, Mackey's and Vida come to mind. Toka if you're looking cocktails. -- Fritz

Petworth, Washington DC: I'm having strange cravings - I want Food for Thought food.

I hear that Bobby is cooking at the Black Cat now, and I see that gets a line in the review. But no details!

So, what can you tell me? Like, how extensive is the menu (I need that delicious veggie black bean burger, although I would settle for the Salsa melt they used to serve at Dante's) When is the food available? And can I get it in the Red Room?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Petworth. The menu is fairly extensive, but not as long as Dante's. Love the veggie burger. I believe they have the salsa melt, and yes, you can get your food in the Red Room. -- Fritz

Lincoln NE: HELP! I have a Sietsema-ish question, but cannot ask him...I lived in DC about 5 years ago, and have been tapped by my boss to find a few mid-priced restaurants to take clients for dinner next week. We (and these clients) will be attending the Natural and Organic products Expo, so are looking for something up that alley. However, we also will be attending a banquet with food prepared by Nora Pouillon, so Cafe Nora and Nora Asia aren't on my short list. I'm pretty adventurous food-wise, but need suggestions!

The Going Out Gurus: What about Equinox? Chef Todd Gray's food is regional, seasonal and graceful. Tho' perhaps not the middest of mid-point prices. Alternatively, Butterfield 9 is a pleasure whether you're working or playing. Ten Penh offers Pan-Asian in an understated but silky setting. -- Kate

Shopping ?: Forever 21 has the best cheap/trendy clothes. They are located in the Fair Oaks Mall!

The Going Out Gurus: Totally. And sharing dressing rooms with teenagers and tweens (tweenagers?) is really funny too. Worth the trip: also at Montgomery Mall? Not sure.

Capitol Hill, Washington DC: We're going to Marrakesh on Saturday night for my friend's 25th birthday. I read all the reviews, and it sounds pretty cool with the 7-course dinner and belly dancing.

My question is, how long should we plan to be there if we're arriving at 8pm, and are there any good nightlife optons around that area of New York Ave? I heard that Tuscana West has an international night (which would fit well w/the evening), but not sure what day that is.

Great chats- keep up the good work!

The Going Out Gurus: Yep. Diva @ Tuscana West plays international, Persian, Latin, you name it. Can be crowded, but still fun. Good drinks. I think doors open at 11. -- Fritz

Washington, DC: What's the scene like in Vida? Is it the euro crowd (i.e. ESL, 1223, Dragonfly, etc.) or the beer drinking crowd? Cover? Dress code?

The Going Out Gurus: Not a lot of beer drinking. Look sharp. I think the damage is around $10, and you get lots of stylish Euro types in on the weekends. -- Fritz

West Ender: Well, that certainly explains the ridiculously over-the-top Lion King outfits in our building lobby. Thanks.

And it looks like Mixtec will be the winner of my hard-earned entertainment budget this weekend. Thanks, gurus and chatters!

The Going Out Gurus: And on that note of triumph, we're out like Janet Reno. Chat to you all next week!
