Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002; 1 p.m. EDT

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Good afternoon, chatters. We hope this day-after-Sept. 11 finds you all well and ready for what looks to be a fantastic weekend.
Have you had a chance to check out our new Fall Arts Guide? It's a cool package that contains tons of content from the newspaper's arts guide, as well as info some of you may find useful -- guides to cheap theater tickets, pre-theater dining and where to meet fellow arts-lovers, as well as seating charts for several local venues. We're kinda proud of it, so take a moment to dig in if you haven't yet.
Now let's get on with the show. My name is Jen, and I'll be your server today. I'm joined by able-bodied colleagues Fritz, Kate, Maura, Joe and Rhome. May we take your order?

Arlington, Va.: How can I search for a movie by the theater?

The Going Out Gurus: Follow these steps:
Go to the movies page. On the left, you will see two pulldown searchboxes, one that says Theaters and another that says All Areas. Click on the All Areas pulldown, select a neighborhood, and you'll get a list of all theaters there. Alternatively, if you know exactly which theater you want, you can type it into our searchbox and go directly to it. It's both handy and simple, kids. -- Jen

Washington, DC: Where's the best place to watch the sunset on the Mall? Also, did the Thursday night extended hours museum thang end or is it ongoing?
Th-zanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Washington. Regarding extended museums hours at the Smithsonian -- Art Nights -- they ended Aug. 29. They won't be back 'til after Memorial Day, 2003. On the plus side the Corcoran and the Phillips do have extended hours every Thursday. Check them out.

I'm sure a lot of readers have thoughts on the best sunset views. My take might be the Jefferson Memorial, but let's hear a few more. -- Maura

Washington, D.C. Cat: Is Webb's BBQ still open? I was in that area a couple of months ago and was going to stop in, but got sucked into Ben's Chili Bowl for the zillionth time. I recall it was mentioned in a past chat that Webb's is going the way of penny candy.

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Oh snap! Not the penny candy! What y'all know about a sandwich bag of monster chews, tootsie rolls and bubble gums for 25 cents? Anyway, I regularly drive through U Street astonished at how quickly all the flavor is being leeched out, casting a watchful eye to make sure Webb's doesn't go out like State of the Union. I looks like it's still in business although I feel compelled to go in and stockpile some mac & cheese and sweet potato pie before things get ugly. Arlington Riblet, are you paying attention?- Rhome

Arlington, Va.: Is there any place in the area that will be making an event out of the season premiere of "The Sopranos" on Sunday night?

The Going Out Gurus: Innaword, Felix. They'll be screening the season opener at 9 and offering cosmo and beer specials to the "made" men and women who've come to watch. -- Kate

Woodley Park, Washington, D.C.: Tom Sietsma has mentioned that "dancers" tend to go to the Palm. Can you suggest any other places, outside of gentlemen's clubs, to meet the women who work in them?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello WP,WDC, this is Joe and this question is so easy to answer I'm surprised you even had to ask it. Have you tried a library?? Or maybe a church social? Or a lecture at the Smithsonian?? Any "dancers" out there want to give Woodley Park some other places where he (presumably a he) can meet you?

Washington, DC: Where do Eagles fans plan on watching the game Sunday night?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC, this is Joe - a lifelong Eagles fan - and even after a total of 10 years in DC, I've never found a Eagles bar in town. Of course Eagles fans tend to be rude, obnoxious and bitter losers so maybe bars don't want us as customers. But maybe someone out there knows of a place. Can anyone help?

Washington, D.C.: Help. Going out for dinner/drinks (emphasis on the drinks) early Saturday evening. Five of us; VERY diverse tastes. Need a place that's not expensive, lively enough to drown out the obnoxious drinkers in the group, a menu that accommodates healthy eaters and those who don't eat what's not deep-fried. I'm a beer fanatic and others only drink sugary, neon-colored cocktails. We don't want to be rushed out; we want to stay and drink a while, and we want to be in or near the sunny weather and in D.C. Am I asking too much?

The Going Out Gurus: Have you considered Mimi's or Penang? The former embodies my idea of a trouble: I just can't deal with a singing waiters, but if you can silence the odd snicker, it's got a rock solid, international menu and tables that could easily accomodate your group. Friday's and Saturday's Penang has DJ Adrian Loving after 10:00. Donna's in the St. Gregory Hotel has 1/2 price wine on Saturday nights -- perfect for "the obnoxious drinkers in the group." Are you sure we haven't met? -- Kate

Maid of Honor in Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: Hey GoGs,

Happy Thursday! I know you've heard this a million times -- especially because I read it all the time :) -- but I have to throw a bachelorette next Friday. And before you say it, I have thoroughly read through the bachelorette article and a bunch of other reviews on places. Here's some background for the wise gurus. We are meeting up beforehand at my apartment in Glover Park for munchies and drinks. The bride-to-be loves Latin and dance music, not techno. (She's even marrying a Brazilian!) Now where to go? We're thinking: VIP Club, Vida or Cafe Citron? Would VIP Club be too big or too sophisticated for a bachelorette (she's going to be wearing a veil with all the bachelorette goodies but there will be no suck-for-a-bucking.) Is Vida too mellow/loungey? I've only been to Cafe Citron for dinner (haven't been to the other places at all) and it seems so small. We'll have about nine girls altogether. HELP! We do not want a Polly Esther's scene. If any of the clicksters out there have done bachelorettes at any of these places before, please share. Also, does anybody know of a cheap shuttle/van service that would cart us around? And one last question: how do you search the previous Got Plans? for previous bachelorette discussions? Do you have to go through and read each chat over again?

Thanks so much! You guys are the best!

The Going Out Gurus: Okay, MoH. When Jen said, "Do you want to take a question from a Maid of Honor in Glov..." I yelled "No! No! Nooo!"

But, since you've done your homework, I'm glad to help. I think that if you're not doing the suck-for-a-buck thing, you should consider the VIP Club. (Just keep the veil in your pocket until you get in, okay?) There usually a salsa band downstairs (this week, it's Johnny Palanco's), and it has the most club-like atmosphere. It's upscale, but I haven't found Fridays to be overly "sophisticated." (I mean, there are guys in blue shirts and khakis up in the club.) Four floors of dancing. You'll have a good time.

Vida is more loungey, although they have DJs on a Friday night. I'm not sure it's worth it, unless she wants to do lots of tequila shots. Citron is hot on Friday nights -- good, packed crowd, tasty mojitos and tropical drinks. Not a lot of room to dance (or move), though. Have you considered Habana Village? It's much larger, has plenty of room to dance and lots of guys who speak Spanish.

As for searching the archive, we don't have a search box per se, but you can go to google and type:

"Bachelorette" "Got Plans" site:discuss.washingtonpost.com

and that ought to do it.

Oh, and for transportaion, you want "Girls Night Out," which is girlsnightout.net.

-- Fritz

Rockville, MD: Hi Gurus! I was wondering whether anyone had ever been to the Dave & Busters in Rockville at the White Flint Mall. Is it a fun, happening place for a group of twenty-somethings (primarily girls), and is there a day of the week that is best to go? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Rockville. I (Jen) have been there a few times, and I'd say it is a fun place if you're in the right mood for it. It's loud, and the game room is filled with people, noise, flashing lights, etc. I would say it's fun for an hour or two, but after that your senses might be working overtime. (The dining room is a bit more low-key, and the food there isn't too bad.)
As far as which day to go, weekend evenings are when it's most crowded; if you want to go when there's a bit more room to breathe, try mid-week.

WDC: Any word on when Metro Cafe's reopening?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Not yet. One proposed deal has apparenly fallen through for financial reasons, so they're still looking. Give them some time. -- Fritz

Adams Morgan: Can't wait to see my favorite new band, Drive by Truckers, Sat. at Iota. They don't sell tickets in advance so I was wondering when I should arrive there. Can I buy tickets earlier in the day if I don't want to show up early?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Adams Morgan, this is Joe and I know that Iota doesn't sell tickets for the show (they stamp hands) so I doubt you'd be able to reserve a spot earlier in the day. This show starts earlier than the usual shows at Iota so I think I would get there by 7:30 to ensure getting in. You might want to call the club and see what they suggest (703-522-8340). Should be a fun show.

Boring Office-ville: Love the GOGs! Okay, a friend is taking the train in from NYC on Tuesday. I want to do dinner someplace that is like Wazuri, Meze, Kuna, Spices, or Rays the Steaks in price, ambience, and fab-o tastiness. But since she's arriving at U. Station and I live on the Hill, I don't want to schlep to Dupont and farther NW or out to Rosslyn. Anything like that near the MCI Center (no Jaleo, been too often), the Hill, Union Station, etc? It's a tough one isn't it: moderate prices, super tasty, not overly chic but definitely fun/hip, and not in NW. Ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: BOv, on the Hill have you thought about Banana Cafe? Closer to MCI Center, maybe Cafe Atlantico. -- Maura

The NEW U: Good Afternoon Gurus! After a hard week at work, I am ready for the weekend and a different change of scene. I was wondering what y'all know about the new bar that took over Julio's old space. Is it open yet and what is it like? It seems like it might be a fun new place to check out this weekend. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, New U. That place is going to be Local 16, an organic restaurant and lounge that's run by the Eighteenth Street Lounge guys. I (Fritz) was by twice last weekend, and they still have paper over the windows and permits taped to the glass, but I've seen furniture being carried in. I can't wait for the deck to open, even though summer's almost gone. -- Fritz

Washington D.C.: Hi- I was sorry to miss the 9/11 candelight vigils and memorial services yesterday. Do you know if there are any other such events scheduled for this weekend?

And, I found out too late about the Lincoln Memorial event. How was it? Was there a huge crowd? Best wishes to everyone observing this sad anniversary.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington, There are many ways to commemorate this first anniversary. "here is new york: a democracy in photographs" is one I highly recommend. It's at the Corcoran Gallery of Art through Nov. 11, but tonight, on the Ellipse behind the White House, a portion of the images, snap shots by amatuers mainly, will be projected between 7 and 10 p.m. This is a staggering show: simple and spontaneous. Maura and Troy fashioned a photogallery of images: here, preview the exhibition. -- Kate

Washington, D.C.: I'm going to the sing-a-long "Sound of Music" tonight at the Kennedy Center! Does anyone know if it's a good time? Do people dress up? Will stuffy D.C. folks actually sing?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. I (Jen) am going on Sunday, and based on what I've heard, it should be a great time. (Take a look at this feature, including the video, and you'll see what I mean.)
People do dress up, at least they have in other locations. I am hoping D.C. folks will do the same. I also assume people, even some of our more anal fellow residents, actually plan to sing. Otherwise what's the point in going to a sing-along? So long, farewell, and have a great time.

Arlington, VA: I am looking for a restaurant on Capitol Hill that will help me to make a good impression. I'm hoping for someplace that is more formal than casual, but isn't too stuffy. A varied menu would be appreciated because we might have some potentially picky eaters.

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, Montmartre springs to mind and also Bistro Bis. I don't know if French is a varied enough menu for you, but let's hope so. -- Maura

Silver Spring, Md.: Hi Gurus. Heading to Dupont Circle for happy hour tomorrow around 5:30. We are trying to hit as many spots for food/drink as possible before happy hr. is over. So far, Kramerbooks and the Front Page are on our list. Where else should we go in that neighborhood? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Good call on Kramer's. That place is severely overlooked, despite the quality of the beer selection. Places you SHOULD NOT miss: Happy Hour at Cafe Citron (til 7): $3.65 mojitos, $3.65 rum lemonades. Say hi to Thomas for us. Fox and Hounds' $2.50 glass-of-liquor-and-a-side-of-soda is a great way to drink cheaply. Toka has beautiful $5 martinis - the best martini/sidecar happy hour deal in town - if you're so inclined. And I like Savino's Restaurant and Lounge. I can't remember what their specials are, but the drinks are fantastic. -- Fritz

Re: meeting dancers: No offense Woodly Park, but I am a "dancer" and the thought of someone wanting to meet me strictly because I am a "dancer" is a huge turn-off. Just my 2 cents...

The Going Out Gurus: See what you've started Woodley Park? Better change your approach.

Arlington,Va: Yeah, I have a suggestion for the Eagles fan and where he should watch the game....in Philly on Loser Street! GO Skins!

The Going Out Gurus: Aww Arlington, that's not very nice. Can't you be a little more helpful.

Philly: The game's Monday. I'm watching in a room full of Spurrier-cheering Redskins fans because victory will taste that much sweeter. GO EAGLES!!!!!!

The Going Out Gurus: There, that's more like it.

Amused in Arlington: To Woodley Park:
To meet strippers, why don't you just hang around outside strip clubs? That way, you'll look as classy as you sound!

The Going Out Gurus: Or maybe inside strip clubs.

Boo!!:

Tell your poster exactly where Eagles fans are going to be watching the game - in PHILLY!!

The Going Out Gurus: OK, we're clearly not going to get a lot of help on this question.

A Challenging Question!: I know this might be hard to come up with ideas for, but maybe you or the other readers can think of something.

I have a friend in his early 20s coming to visit for a while in October. I still have to work most days so are there things he can do during the day on his own? The kicker is that he only speaks Spanish. Thanks for your help.

The Going Out Gurus: Piece a cake, ACQ. I bet your friend is expecting to practice at least a little bit of English while he's here, but in the Smithsonian museums, he'll find biligual maps and on occassion, audio tours. D.C. is an international destination and the larger, established venues are ready to make sure he can see as possible, and understand the context. He too might be curious about the "here is new york" at the Corcoran (and little of any language can put this response in context). Also, he might enjoy being mobile: renting bike and helmet from Big Wheel Bikes in G'town; or canoes and kayaks at Fletcher's Boat House could be fun for him while you're at work. Can you tell me anything more about his interests? -- Kate

Arlington, Va.: I need a happy hour suggestion for Friday. I'd be happy going to Bar Rouge or some other trendy place where I can get a good martini. But I have lots of friends who I'm meeting next Friday that would rather just have a beer in a more casual environment. Any suggestions for a compromise? Needs to be in the city -- Dupont, Midtown, or near the MCI.

The Going Out Gurus: Last Friday, Arlington, I had a similar problem. I was meeting my old college roommate and his girlfriend, plus a few other girls and some guys from England. After much thought, we decided on the District Chophouse - good martinis, a decent number of house-brewed beers ($2.50 at happy hour), pool tables, etc. And it's half a block from the Metro. Granted, it's not very trendy, but most of the "trendy" bars lack a decent beer selection. I'd say the Reef, but that's out for geographic reasons. Oh, wait. Duh. The lounge at Ortanique. Upstairs. Look for Dylan. They have good beer, great cocktails, a special HH menu, and it's right near Metro Center. Problem solved! -- Fritz

Dumfries, VA: Inquiring about local flea markets: I've heard there may be one in Georgetown, can you give me any direction?

The Going Out Gurus: Here's directions to Georgetown; but if you're coming all this way, don't miss Eastern Market: if the browsing proves fruitless, crab cakes at Market Lunch easily make up for it. Anyone else have a favorite?

Washington, D.C.: Where can I bring a group of coworkers after a day-long retreat on a Monday night to relax with some drinks and do something "different and intellectually stimulating?" I was thinking along the lines of a trivia night (Politiki?), karaoke, some jazz? Suggestions, PLEASE!

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Washington. Trivia sounds just the idea. On Mondays, though, you need to go to Fado for their quiz, which I think is one of the best in the area. It's certainly the hardest. Karaoke on Monday ... hmmm. Not much to speak of. -- Fritz

Dave and Busters: Not my idea of a good time! If you're into lots of video games in a big, dark, smokey room then that's your place! But if you are a bunch of cute, young, classy girls... pass on Dave and Busters for your night out!

The Going Out Gurus: The choice is yours, D&B fans (which is different from d'n'b fans).

Washington, D.C.: My friend from out-of-town surprised me yesterday by telling me that she is going to be in town this Sunday and wants to have brunch and go shopping. Without thinking, I said, "Let's go to Georgetown." Stupidly, I started telling her about all of the stores (she's a traditionalist when it comes to shopping and wouldn't appreciate the more alternative areas of the city). So by the end of the conversation, she was sold on Georgetown shopping.

Then I started to look for brunch. I had heard that Senses was supposed to be good, but when I tried calling, the number was disconnected and it seems like it might not be around.

So now I'm in a bind: I have a friend who wants to have brunch in Georgetown and and no place to go!

Any suggestions? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Washington. I've had great brunch before at Daily Grill in Georgetown. Arrive hungry. If it's a nice day, why not walk over to Georgetown after brunch at Teasim or Tabard Inn in Dupont. Have fun. -- Maura

Falls Church: Guru’s

It is a delight to be interactive with you, having lucked out of a standing Thursday afternoon meeting/snorefest.

An acquaintance of mine was lost at the Pentagon, but I had no real personal ties, only the sense of communal grief common to us all. But I felt compelled to make my own small pilgrimage yesterday. For folks not aware, in addition to the Pentagon itself, there are a number of exhibits that will take you to the heart of remembering our loss. I started at the "Arlington Remembers" ceremony in Rosslyn, then metroed to Farragut West to walk down to the Corcoran to see the "Here is New York" exhibit, over to the Reagan Building to see the Pentagon quilts, then down to the American History Museum to see their September 11th artifacts.

I assure you that the images at the Corcoran and those tangible objects; a fire helmet, an elevator sign – will stick with you. They will hit you hard. So, I was writing to encourage anyone who might be inclined to do something similar to also take the time to take in some of the joyful and hopeful items along the way. The small collection of very simple quilts (eight maybe ten) that line the food court hallways of the Reagan building are works that attempt to heal. Also, for me, the elephants and the donkeys, with that stupid buck-tooth grin, provide a sense of the hope, humor and happiness of DC on a sunny fall day.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Falls Church, this is Joe. Thanks for writing. I went the other day to the "Here is New York" exhibit at the Corcoran and I couldn't agree with you more. It was incredibly moving and people should go check it out if they get a chance. By the way, just a quick survey, how many of you out there are working in a building that has a giant flag hanging from it? Every building in Arlington seems to be draped in enormous flags.

Rosslyn, Va.: Taking my gf out for her birthday this Thursday. We'll go out for a nice dinner first and then hang out at a bar afterwards. What are some cool dive bars (preferably in Adams Morgan) that won't be too packed where we can have some time to ourselves?

The Going Out Gurus: Silly Rosslyn, most Adams Morgan bars are packed on Thursday nights. Try Chez Antoine, Dan's Cafe, Chief Ike's, or, if you get lucky, the upstairs portion of Rocky's. None of those are exceptionally Divey, but if a girl took me to the Common Share for my birthday, that might be the last one she EVER celebrated with me. -- Fritz

Washington DC: Hello Gurus,

I have family coming to visit and would like to take them to Chinese food in Chinatown. What is the best place to go? (There would be four people in the group)
Thanks!
Jordan

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Jordan, it's Kate. Are you looking for a slightly smart dim sum at Tony Cheng's, or are you brave enough for Full Kee. Tom Sietsema's talked up Burma in his recent discussions. And nothing beats New Big Wong (for name or noodles). If you've got a car, head to Mark's Duck House in Falls Church. Trust me. -- Kate

K Street DC: What's the place to go for classic cocktails in DC? You know, a place that would be ashamed to serve an abomination like an "apple-tini." I'm thinking some hotel bar, but I've no clue as to which one. Thanx!

The Going Out Gurus: You, K Street, are a man or woman after my own heart. My choices would be Off the Record at the Hay Adams, the Round Robin bar at the Williard, or maybe Le Bar at the Sofitel, even though they have some sweet drinks on the menu, because they do the classics well. -- Fritz

Back of the Lincoln is nice: facing west over the river, and the bridges. Nice view.

The Going Out Gurus: Very nice.

MOH in Glover Park: Fritz, you read my mind! I was actually thinking about Habana Village as well (based on all the previous chats). We'll let the girls duke it out over Habana Village or VIP Club. Thanks so much for all the tips. I think we'll pass on the Girls Night Out transport shuttle and take cabs though.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Good idea. I love Habana Village, even though my salsa is, um, unpolished. Nine girls in one cab, though? -- Fritz

Washington, DC: Thinking about taking a friend to see either "The Winter's Tale" at the Shakespeare Theater or "La Boheme" at the Kennedy Center. Any way to get ... ahem ... cheaper tickets? Would like to plan ahead, so that might be a problem. If I couldn't get a deal on tickets, I thought about brown bagging and having a picnic somewhere earlier? It's for a birthday...

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, DC, there is a way to get cheaper tickets. Go to this link, which tells you what's on sale at TICKETplace. I believe you will see discounted seats for both of these shows on the list. (P.S. Please take a look at this feature on cheap tickets for more ideas, including info on other discounts at the Shakespeare.) -- Jen

AU: For the guy who wants a variety of places all in one for his group, how about Aroma? Since they don't have a kitchen, they keep a binder of carryout menus from all around the neighborhood. Go early, snag a table in the back, and order beer and cocktails, and call in orders for whatever food you want, from Vace pizza to carryout from Lavandou or Ardeo.

Urban picnicing at its finest, IMO.

The Going Out Gurus: That's a good idea, AU. Atomic Billiards does the same thing, I should add. But there's nothing like some Nam-Viet and one of Lili's specials (at Aroma). -- Fritz

Anacostia, Washington, D.C.: "Petworth" touched on this several months ago, but it might bear repeating. Almost all of the recommendations that the Gurus give are of locales east of say 14th or 16th Street in Northwest stretching into Montgomery County and Virginia. While this emphasis is somewhat understandable since there are hundreds of restaurants/clubs in that general area, what about the other three "quadrants" of the District and Prince George's County? Surely there are restaurants/clubs/entertainment venues in these other areas as well. Just a general caution against NW bias.

The Going Out Gurus: Having my own history in the less glamorous wards of this city and in PG County, I'm all about being cautious against bias but there are realities to contend with. The first of which is that there just aren't many sit down restaurants east of the river. As for PG County, I can attest to the fact that many of my peers who don't feel like trekking into the city will just hang out at chains like Applebee's, Bennigan's, T.G.I. Friday's. I haven't been there in a minute but for a while Jasper's was a hopping hot spot, people went up in there like it was a nightclub, they had to pull the velvet rope out and everything. Generally though, PG County residents have long been griping about the dearth of more upscale dining, shopping and nightlife options. To end this on a good note, how about throwing out some suggestions of good establishments in overlooked parts of the area? Today mine is Sahara Oasis in Hyattsville. Good african food and a live band that plays many styles from soukouss to zouk. - Rhome

Wait, what?: I'm so confused, is a 'dancer' more than the obvious, someone, who, you know, dances? Do I not know this because I'm not fancy enough to hang out at the Palm? Can you clarify, gurus?

The Going Out Gurus: Dancers are dancers but "dancers" are strippers. Hope that this has been helpful. You don't have to eat at the Palm to put this information to use.

Thanks, Kate: Thanks for your ideas about my Spanish-speaking friend. His interests are history (European, medieval) and he used to like Megedeth but his tastes are now more hippy I'd say.

What about at night and on weekends? I bought tickets to a performance at Gala. Are there any Spanish language movies playing - like at Visions Cinema? I'll take him to the renaissance festival and a couple of interesting restaurants he won't have at home. Thanks again!

The Going Out Gurus: From Megadeath to hippy? Clearly his is life-path mirrors my own. Take him to the Black Cat's for a DJ night: Mouse Trap is veddy popular and his accent will work attract honeys like bees. Very thoughtful of you to look into what's on at Gala. At the AFI, there's a Latin American Film Festival (Sept. 19-29): new movies from Argentina to Venezuela. Always worth checking out what's going on there. -- Kate

Alexandria, Va.: My girlfriend enjoys good poetry readings, but not at coffeehouses. More like a jazz locale. Where can I find such an atmosphere and event?

The Going Out Gurus: Here you go. - Rhome

Arlington, Va.: Hey y'all,

Where are the best places to hear Persian and Arab music in the area? I've been to Diva, which I liked. Any other suggestions?

Thanks much!

The Going Out Gurus: This is a good question, Arlington. I know there's some in the VIP room at Dream. I thought I heard there was some at Daedalus. But now I'm going to have to open it up to the readers to see what they know. -- Fritz

Bethesda, Maryland: I am looking for some entertainment tonight in the area, possibly dinner but would love to do something in addition as well. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. Assuming you're sticking close to home, I'd first sugget Grapeseed. They have an ongoing deal where if you buy a $40 bottle of wine or higher, you earn a $20 coupon towards your next visit. Great wine and a good deal. If you go, grab a seat and dine at the bar. That might be entertaining enough. And tomorrow night, remember Bethesda art galleries hold their monthly art walk. -- Maura

Washington, D.C.: For Rosslyn: How about Staccato in Adams Morgan for a drink -- small, intimate, divey and usually plenty of space (try upstairs). Also for the woman who wanted to know about brunch in Georgetown, try Bistro Francais. It's tres yummy.

The Going Out Gurus: Another suggestion -- or two.

Brunch in Georgetown: Peacock Café on N Street has a great brunch menu, and it's casual but chic. Also, I've heard that Tony & Joe's on the waterfront is another good option. I think it's a buffet, complete with mimosas and bloody marys!

The Going Out Gurus: I like the Peacock Cafe idea. As for Tony & Joe's, I question if it's worth the wait and crowds. -- Maura

Arlington, VA: Hi! Parents and sisters are coming to visit this weekend. I'd like to bring them out for a fair/festival that might be taking place this weekend in the city...perhaps something with "neighborhood color and character." (Last weekend's Adams Morgan Fest comes to mind, which I loved!)

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Nothing quite like Adams Morgan Days this weekend (more on that below), but there's nothing but 18th-century entertainment at Mount Vernon this weekend. Also, the first nationwide pow wow sponsored by the National Museum of the American Indian takes place Saturday and Sunday on the Mall. The Great Frederick Fair opens tomorrow and runs until Sept. 21; it's emphasis is agriculture: pie contests, pie eating contests, you get my drift. -- Kate

I'm curious to know if anyone else ventured to Adams Morgan Day last weekend? I thought the food stands and trinket vendors had little to do with our hood, and the resulting smelly mess was substandard entertainment.

Washington, D.C.: Hi guys, how are you? I'm looking to get out of town this weekend, anywhere within a three- or four-hour radius would be great. Any suggestions on cool places to visit?

The Going Out Gurus: Off the top of my head there's NYC, Williamsburg, Philadelphia, various beaches. Why don't you poke around in our Travel section? - Rhome

The Tabard is great (BUT IT AIN'T IN GEORGETOWN): Our attempts to find morning eateries in Georgetown have always been inconclusive, but I have always like Clyde's (which had some funky egg dishes) and Paulo’s (which used to have flamenco music) for weekend brunches.

The Going Out Gurus: Doll, my answer got cut off, but thanks for the concern. What's with the shouting? If you must know I recommended Daily Grill and walk from the Tabard or Teaism in Dupont over to Georgetown (it can be done, if you weren't aware). Personally, I find Clyde's too dark for brunch on a sunny day. Now write again only if you're going to play nice. -- Maura

Petworth: Brunch in Georgetown - go to my favorite brunch!

Cafe La Ruche has great brunch on both Saturday and Sunday!

The Going Out Gurus: Now there's a nice answer from -- of course -- Petworth.

First date - DC: Hello GOGs, I am taking my blind date to McDonald's tonight, and I was wondering if they still had toys in the happy meals? The other problem is that i don't want to have that wicked Mcdonalds hamburger breath afterwards (if you catch my drift...heh heh). Please help!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello First Date. Oh yeah, we catch your drift ... heh heh. Just remember, even if she's blind she's still going to know it's McDonalds.

AOL, Dulles, VA: Thursday Greetings to you GOG's!

Every week I ask the same question and every week you ignore me. We're desperate for some good happy hour/music locales out here in barrenland. Any suggestions?

Pouting at AOL

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, AOL. I thought I recommended places for you. Maybe that was someone else from Dulles? In any event, I say happy hour at Bungalow Billiards in Sterling (there's a buffet tomorrow night), Basin Street (Regal Plaza), which makes good martinis and has DJ nights, and the recently opened Sterling Cinema and Draft House, which has DJ nights in addition to movies and a bar. -- Fritz

15th and L: For the Eagles fan, try the Park Bench Pub in Cleveland Park. There's a boatload of TVs (they've added more, and better quality, televisions since last season!), and there's always a wide assortment of fans for different teams. Plus, the grub is above-average for bar food, and the bartenders are great.

The Going Out Gurus: OK, thanks for the tip.

DC - want Pho in fall: are there any good pho spots in DC like Pho 75 in arlington? If you can make this happen for me GOGs, i'll funk you all right.

The Going Out Gurus: You'll what us all right? No thanks. But there is a Pho place on Mt. Pleasant St. Anyone been there? What's it like. Pho 75 in Arlington is hard to beat.

Re: EAGLES: One Sunday last season I went to Champions in Georgetown and there was a good number of Eagles fans there.

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!

The Going Out Gurus: More help for Eagles fans.

Cap Hill: What can you suggest for places to eat dinner that would be convenient to the Pow Wow on the Mall this weekend for the new Museum of the American Indian? Something fun for a first date would be idea.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Cap Hill, I'm looking forward to that Pow Wow as well. Afterwards, you might want to walk up 7th street and check out Jaleo or even Austin Grill. Enjoy.

Arlington Riblet: All right, I love me a good rib. Always make an effort to head to to Levi's (MD), Henry's Soulfood Cafe (MD), and Flavors (VA). But I'm distressed at the lack of good ribbin' closer in. Am I missing something? Please direct me to a fine BBQ!!! Cloth napkin joints and chain restaurants need not apply. And don't say Carpool and that place next door to it, just walking in there makes me want to pull out my Abercrombie-Thwarting-Device.

The Going Out Gurus: Other than the good Webb's that I was touting earlier, I've been known to take a few years off my life in some of the ramshackle bbq shacks you'll find dotted around Southeast. I don't know much about places like these but I'm sure readers here won't be shy to weigh in, and there are always the reader reviews on the records themselves. - Rhome

Duck, N.C.: Hi Gurus! I'm going to the Kennedy Center tonight (for the "Sound of Music" Sing-a-long -- I'm not ashamed) and would like to have dinner with my lovely friend Kristen pre-show. Can you suggest a place nearby? Is there even anything over there?

Thanks!

P.S. My friends went to Whisper this past weekend. Please mock them.

The Going Out Gurus: You're coming all the way from Duck for this? Hey, don't be ashamed - as I (Jen) said, I'm going, too.
Take a look at this theater dining feature. It mentions a couple of Kennedy Center options, including the Brasserie at Watergate and Marcel's.
And we're feeling too much love to mock today. But we will make snarky comments about your friends under our breath, if that makes you feel better.

Brunch in Georgetown: I liked Papa Razzi (is that the name?) and Cafe La Ruche a lot. Also, La Madeleine has THE BEST tomato soup ever, and there's good people watching if you sit in the windows.

The Going Out Gurus: More brunch bits.

Brunch in G-town: Bistro Francais has a $16 all-you-can-drink champagne brunch every weekend...the menu is limited, but everything is tasty! And the bubbly is pretty decent as well. I'm thoroughly addicted.

The Going Out Gurus: And more.

Adams Morgan Dive Bars: What?! You'd break up with a woman over Common Share? Really Fritz, I'm shocked. I mean who wouldn't want to spend a nice evening with a significant other while swilling $2 drinks with a bunch of drunks and sitting on a sofa that well, if you don't get scabbies, you're lucky? And the bathroom...you know that scene in Trainspotting? Well the CS's bathrooms are only slightly better. How, for the love of beer, do they still get to keep their liquor license? I would think health code violations alone would be enough.

The Going Out Gurus: Fritz is all about health code violations.

K Street: Happy Thursday GOG's! Yeah! Football is HERE! Where to for free/cheap wings and cheap beer for Monday Night Football? Preferably downtown?

The Going Out Gurus: Go west, young K Street. This is Fritz, and the most amazing Monday Night Football deal in town is just down K Street from you. Head for Washington Harbour, where Riverside Grill is offering a veritable football feast during games: A bucket of 8 pony bottles of beer and a bucket of wings - that's THREE WHOLE POUNDS - for $16. I told my friend Mark, and he said, "Well, I'm taken care of." I'm going to check it out one of these weeks, and then they'll have to roll me into the office the next day. -- Fritz

Adams Morgan: I'm tryin' to check out "Everest" at the Imax Theater on Friday night. The show is at 8:45; can I get tix earlier in the day?

The Going Out Gurus: Anytime that day, I believe, AM -- Maura

Common Share sucks: That place used to be cool.... but now it's packed with hoochies, and nary a bike messenger to be seen! Plus they raised the prices..

The Going Out Gurus: A betrayal of their utopian roots, I feel. -- Fritz

Re: Happy hour at DuPont: One more suggestion for HH: Gabriels on P street. They have HH until 8 pm.

The Going Out Gurus: True. But while the bar food is good, the drinks ain't all that. -- F

Serious Question: Okay, I'm not trying to be snarky here, but do you all ever get tired of answering the same questions over and over again? I mean really, did people not go out before this discussion came along? Some of the questions that you post, I'm convinced these people couldn't plan their way out of a paper bag if they tried. Can't you not respond to the "a group of friends and I want a place to..." that you've answered every week since this discussion started? Is it that you get so few original questions that you have to use all those same ones over and over again?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm not even going to get drawn into the hateration. I'll respond with a helpful tip instead! Head over to Google, put in your search terms and after them type in "site:discuss.washingtonpost.com". Y Voila! You can search the chat archives! On the real though, we do get a lot of repetitive questions. The chat is what you you make it, folks. - Rhome

In front of my computer..: Quick question: Hotel Washington, roof top cafe, can I wear my flip flops when meeting people for drinks there tomorrow? I don't want to start the whole dress code debate again, I just want to, you know, wear my flip flops. Can you guys help a girl out?

The Going Out Gurus: Sure. I've seen girls wearing flip-flops there. No sweat. (As long as they're cute and not ratty!) -- Fritz

Bethesda : Has anyone seen "One Hour Photo" with Robin Williams yet? I know this isn't the movie chat.. but I had to throw that out there before I plunk down my hard earned $8.50 (10 bucks on weekends at Mazza!). It looks creepy yet intriguing...

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have not seen it yet either, but I also think it looks intriguing. It got two good reviews from Post critics (see here). So I say give it a shot. However, being a cheapskate, I tend to do matinees when I'm not entirely sure about a movie. So you might consider that -- it's (a little) cheaper.

AOL, Dulles, VA: Bless you Fritz! I pout no more.

The Going Out Gurus: Awww. Glad I could make your day brighter. P.S. -- drive down to Herndon/Reston/whatever and hit up the Luau Garden restaurant for the best Mai Tais outside the beltway. There's my Tech Corridor tip of the day ... -- Fritz

Washington, DC: Metal Forever! Where in DC can I go to bang my head?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey WDC, if you're looking only in DC your choices are limited but if you don't mind going out of the District, then Jaxx in Springfield is definitely the place.

DC Pho: Nam-Viet up in CP makes the illest Pho in town. It's even better than Pho 75 (sorry).

The Going Out Gurus: CP is Cleveland Park and yes Nam-Viet is not bad though it's debatable whether it's better than Pho 75 (sorry).

For the Eagles fan: On the Hill, Eagles fans have been spotted at Capitol Lounge. There are so many tvs showing so many games, fans of all kinds can find their game and other fellow team boosters.

The Going Out Gurus: Another Eagles tip. Thanks.

Falls Church, Va.: Hey all,

I am taking my girlfriend out to eat tonight, and I want to take her someplace that's nice and quiet. She really needs a time to relax from the work day. Can you point me to a nice restaurant, and maybe an after-dinner spot, where she can unwind? Romantic would be helpful as well. If you can help me with the area between Falls Church and Reston, that would be great.

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have to admit that I don't know the Falls Church area very well. But you might try a place like Argia's or, if you can head to Reston/Herndon, Euro Bistro. If I remember correctly, Euro's a cute and eclectic spot, though, as the review says, it is a little small. For other ideas, search our restaurants database under Reston or, more generally, Virginia.

Dupont Circle Gal: what is Pho 75??!?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi DCG, this is Joe. Pho 75 is a no-frills, incredibly cheap pho restaurant in Arlington on Wilson Blvd. Pho is a Vietnamese soup (really a meal) with noodles, thinly sliced beef, and all sorts of fresh herbs, hot green peppers and spices. It's amazing and addictive and especially good on a cold day.

Fun-loving in NoVA: Hi GOGs! I know you guys can help me with my question!

Where can a newly single 20-something (just out of a LONG term relationship) go with two of her girlfriends for a fun night of dancing on Sat. night? We don't really want to trek out to Dream, and have already done the VIP Club thing. Also, we are kind of getting tired of the Adams Morgan scene having been there during the past two weekends. Please help! We are in desperate need of some FUN this weekend to lift our spirits!

Thanks to you--you are the best!!!!!!!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Okay, NoVa. I'm always ready to help a fun-loving girl lift her spirits. Now, from your list, I'm going to guess that you're looking for a big ol' place with loads of people, right? Okay, it's a guess. Now, the best way to get over a breakup is to make yourself look good, and then go out somewhere different. I'm going to suggest you try a small, swanky lounge like Modern (I was there a few weekends ago and there was a good-sized crowd dancing to hip-hop and electronic dance music), maybe the new Saturday night party at MCCXXIII - hip-hop, top 40, house, etc., the House music at Club Five (lots of dancing) or maybe Andalu, where you can cop a couch and look cute all night. And, of course, I could suggest Mousetrap at the Black Cat, where there are lots of cute boys, most likely including me, who can distract you, but the music is Britpop and indie rock -- if that's your style. Anyway, good luck. -- Fritz

washington dc: Park bench pub is great, but its a pretty big redskins bar - 980 the Team does its post-game show from there. The Iggles fan might not enjoy it so much.

The Going Out Gurus: Shhhhh!

Silver Spring, Maryland: Any ideas on a good place for a pre-game meal downtown before attending the Redskins-Eagles Monday night game? Interested in places that might offer free shuttle service to and from the game.

The Going Out Gurus: Fran O'Brien's Steakhouse has a shuttle that runs out, and game day specials. Hope you like your meat charred! -- Fritz

One hour photo: Save your $. It is well done, but very smarmy and kind of depressing. Didn't add anything to my life.

The Going Out Gurus: Another opinion on Mr. Williams' latest. I think the real question is: Was it better than "Death to Smoochy"?

Rosslyn, VA: Conundrum -

Early in a dating relationship. Looking for a romantic event for this weekend in which it is not overly obvious that it is a romantic event. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Why are folks always trying to be sneaky? If you're trying to put the moves on then just put the moves on! Maybe I just don't understand this dating thing. Jen, why are you going to give this question to me, someone who doesn't understand the dating thing? Is this a trick question? If the romance is not obvious to the intended "target" is it really romance? I'm definitely throwing this one out to the peanut gallery. - Rhome

Afraid of Robin Williams: "One Hour Photo" is good and creepy, probably one of RW's best performances yet.

The Going Out Gurus: And yet another opinion. But the real question is: Is it better than "Mork and Mindy"? Because that's also good and creepy.

Ribbin?: Exactly how many ribs do you have to eat before you can describe your behavior as "ribbin"?

The Going Out Gurus: I think you have to officially eat "a rack ah ribs".

20007: Afternoon, delite-ful chat...
Here's a question. What can you do when you have a drinking/dinner buddy who is so set in his ways and smitten with the idea of being a regular that you never go anywhere new? How can I sweeten the deal to get him to expand his horizons? Please, I'm at the end of my rope....He says if it ain't broke...

The Going Out Gurus: You know, 20007, I'm a regular at a limited number of places, but (no offense to my favorite bartenders, doormen or DJs) I think I'd be bored looking at the same faces every night. What you should do is find someplace similar enough to the usual that it's not threatening (nearby neighborhood, similar drink/food style, etc.) and get him to go there. Or find someplace that does it better - if he likes, oh, Guinness, take him to Murphy's to try Mooney's Stout, which someone (*cough*) told you was better. If he's a cocktail fiend, take him to Aroma, Ozio or Bar Rouge and let those bartenders work their magic.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes. -- Fritz

Silver Spring, MD: I'm dating this very cool girl who is very different than me. She likes to drink beer, eat fried foods and play pool. I generally go out to hear DJs and dance, but 'm interested in exploring her world. Any ideas where I can take her?

The Going Out Gurus: You want places with fried food and pool tables? This will start a fight or two, but I suggest Zack's, Whitey's, JV's, Dietle's Tavern (in Silver Spring, no less), Politiki, Hank Dietle's ...

Somewhere, USA: So, Staccato is not a dive bar. Dive bars don't have $7 drinks. I'm just sayin.

The Going Out Gurus: That's what I'm screamin', yo. Gimmie an order of rings and the Champagne of Beers ... or just a PBR. -- Fritz

Alexandria, VA: Is there a bar in the area that offers PBR or Stroh's cans so you can watch the games while watching your wallet??

The Going Out Gurus: Whitey's in Va., Dietle's Tavern in Md. -- Fritz

The Going Out Gurus: Well, this brings things to a close for the day. As always, it has been a pleasure. Romantic Rhome and the rest of the loveable gang will be back next week for more crazy antics. In the wise words of Nelson Muntz, smell ya later.
