Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com
Thursday, June 27, 2002; 1 p.m. EDT
Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
This week, we'd like to look back at our first Best Bets Contest. Our readers said Pizza Paradiso is the best place in Washington for a slice. Do you agree? Who got robbed? Is there a category you'd like to see next year? Let's hear from you.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Hello, everybody. We're here, just a little late. Fritz is your host today, along with Maura (Museums), Alexa (Restaurants), Joe (Music), Jen (Theatre/Books), and all-rounders Rhome, Kate and Anne. I'm Fritz (Bars, nightlife, etc.). Here we go!
Arlington, VA:
Anyone been to DC Sessions? I'm going this Saturday for TMBG, and I'm not sure what time to show up. I assume the headliners go on last - what time? Does the whole shindig really end at 10? Thanks for any info y'all can offer.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington, this is Joe and I haven't been yet, but only because I don't like huge crowds. And the crowds, from what I've heard, are huge. Headliners, this weekend They Might Be Giants, do go on last. I'd guess between 8:30 and 9. By the way, we've just learned that Blues Traveler will be playing one of these free DC Sessions shows on Saturday August 17, so all of you jam band fans should start planning ahead.
Washington, D.C.:
Where is the best place to find young, successful, straight, good looking men?
The Going Out Gurus: Would you settle for two out of your five requirements?
20814:
Hope you are staying cool today Gurus, in this famous Washington heat and humidity. Any news on the new Vida that opened in mid-town? Or any plans to review it?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, 20814. This is Fritz, and you can read my review of Vida here. I like it for warm weather -- the patio is huge, and the tequilas are excellent.
Federalville, Va.:
This is really for your online producer. Where in the archives can I find the transcript for the special Got Plans - Wedding?
The Going Out Gurus: We GOGs are our own online producers. (Yes, we truly do it all). Last week's Got Plans? wedding discussion will eventually be archived under Got Plans; until then, you may use this link.
re: VIP club:
Okay- this place is way over-rated. the line outside was ridiculous at 10:30 on a Friday night. Why would anyone in their right mind wait in line for an hour to get into one club where there are a million clubs in DC?!?! So we cabbed it over to Cafe Citron, waited 5 minutes in line and danced the night away!
The Going Out Gurus: Over an hour? For VIP? That's too long. I (Fritz) probably would have done exactly what you did.
Washington, D.C.:
What is Top of the Hill? Saw an ad in the Weekend section and it has the same address as Pennsylvania Avenue Pourhouse. Can one address have three identities?
The Going Out Gurus: It certainly can, Washington. This is Fritz, and Top of the Hill is the top floor of the Politiki/Penn Ave. Pourhouse complex. It's a nice little place, with couches and a long martini bar. Unlike the other floors, it has a dress code -- no sneakers, t-shirts or flip-flops.
Arlington, VA:
It's my birthday today and some friends of mine and I would like to go out to dinner. I'd like to keep it somewhat casual and easily accessible for those who don't have cars. About 8 people will attend. I'm open to almost any cuisine, but love Asian, Spanish and Mediterranean. Any ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington, it's Alexa. If you like Spanish and Mediterranean, and don't have a car then I suppose I suggest Jaleo for tapas and fun. Get off at Navy Memorial or Gallery Place. If it's Asian you hanker, Cafe Asia was just voted a fave of the people in our Best Bets poll, and has a certain buzz about it.
Silver Spring, MD:
The NGA's Egypt exhibit - any tips on how to view it and avoid crowds?
The Going Out Gurus: Go on a weekday? Entry to Quest for Immortality is on a first come first serve basis, unless you order timed entry tickets in advance through Ticketmaster. I (Maura) imagine that line is going to get pretty long on weekends. If you're standing in it, figure they'll probably move a few hundred people through the show per hour and bring a good read. Hopefully on weekdays, it will be much shorter. I'd try late morning if you can.
Washington DC:
Okay I will settle for successful and young.
The Going Out Gurus: Well, that opens the pool up. Anyone want to point this chatter in the right direction?
Alexandria, VA:
About DC Sessions....I went and saw Pat McGee and it was an AWESOME concert! It didn't get crowded until about 8 and Pat went on right at 8:30. Just be prepared for long bathroom lines! But other than that it's awesome!
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the report Alexandria.
Arlington, VA:
I think Rays the Steaks got robbed. We love going there- thanks for the recommendation, Gurus! The stuffed mushroom caps alone make it all worth it, not to mention the handmade bread...yum!
The Going Out Gurus: I (Alexa) saw Ray yesterday, and he seemed in good spirits. Made no mention of such a crime. Gosh, I hope not. Make a note though, the eccentric old boy has a new menu of seasonal goodies coming out in the next week or two. Pay a visit why don't you.
Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus...so glad to see that the roof deck is opened at Reef! Yippee!
I have a question for you... I may be meeting people on Capitol Hill for drinks ce soir. I have been to most of the places around there over the years and can't figure out what I am in the mood to do. Enlighten me with your vast wisdom of places to hang in that area!
Many thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Isn't the deck great? Now, for the Hill -- I (Fritz) don't know what you like, let alone what you're in the mood for, so I'll tell you what I'd be in the mood for on the Hill tonight: half-liters of Paulaner Heffeweissen in the garden at Cafe Berlin, Mai Tais at Politiki, pool and cheap booze at Zack's, or maybe Capitol City Brewing Company. How's that for ideas?
Fairfax, VA:
I'm trying to come up with activites for a group of 18-21 year olds in DC this Friday night. We're looking for an interesting restaurant, and some type of club or bar that will let all of us in. Anyother ideas would also be appreciated.
Thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Fairfax, it's Alexa. Have you been to the Austin Grill? Good for groups, good for the under 21s, reasonable, colorful, tasty... Or Big Bowl for all of the above. The new BB, by the way, opens in Clarendon around July 7. As for clubs, have a butchers at Fritz's guide.
Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gang --
Need some help. I am putting together a casual, happy hour so that two singles can meet. Any ideas on fun settings in D.C. that would not be too crowded or too scarce and where you can hear yourself speak?
The Going Out Gurus:
Hi, DC, or should we call you Yente? This is Anne, and I wish you luck on your matchmaking. I'm thinking the patio at Gazuza or anywhere at Reef, but only early in the week, like a Monday or Tuesday. They're both as light and easy as summertime, with lots to look at. Early in the evening and in the week, neither should be too crowded.
Arlington, VA:
What's shakin?
So we're trying to go see Ugly Cassanova at the
Black Cat tomorrow night and are too lazy to buy
tickets beforehand. Do you think it will sell out, like
Modest Mouse shows, or will we be fine?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey Arlington, this is Joe and as a big Modest Mouse fan, I'm looking forward to this show. I have a feeling that not that many people know that Isaac Brock is in Ugly Casanova so I'm not sure whether this show will sell out. But with Kingsbury Manx also on the bill, it's probably a good idea to get there early anyway.
DC intern:
I'm bored and working for peanuts. What can I do this weekend that's free?
The Going Out Gurus: You could spend the whole weekend looking through the results of inserting "free" into our search box. We do have something of a more narrow scope though. Our intern guide is being updated and should be back up on the site tomorrow, check for it. Have you checked out the Folklife Festival yet? - Rhome
VIP Question:
Hey Gurus...
I'm going to VIP on Friday night (guest list - yes!) and am curious on the men's dress code. My friend often wears the dress shirts that look cool hanging out but I'm wondering if that'll get him denied. Any suggestions for both men and women??
The Going Out Gurus: Here's what will get the fellas denied: sneakers, khakis, jeans, t-shirts, ball caps. Now, if he's a blue-shirt-and-khakis guy, I (Fritz) would advise him to change after work.
Bowie:
No men in DC are successful and young anymore. The ones that were lost it all in the dot-com bust.
The Going Out Gurus: Nice one Bowie. Everyone agree with that?
Arlington, Va.:
Do you know where I can find information on street closings (both D.C. and the Rosslyn/Iwo Jima area) for the 4th of July? I know they close stuff down but don't know exactly when/where and wouldn't want to get stuck. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: We have yer street closings right here, Arlington. You're smart to plan in advance for the closings, and even smarter to keep checking our Fourth of July Guide for updated info, says Anne.
Silver Spring, Md.:
Is there any place in the D.C. metro area that is comparable to the old Twist and Shout? My husband and I are are in our late 40s, but still like to dance, twist, and shout.
Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Mark Gretschel, the man being Twist and Shout, now runs Half Moon BBQ in Silver Spring, and books many of the same kinds of bands.
re: single and searching:
for the chatter looking for the straight, succesful, good looking, young, etc. crowd... try the water front! sequoia, tony and joe's, riverside grille, etc...
The Going Out Gurus: To each their own, we always say.
Washington DC:
Georgetown: young, successful, and boring.
The Going Out Gurus: Ouch. We're not really getting anywhere with this, are we?
Logan Circle:
Hey gurus,
It's not like I'm claiming to be the Arbiter Of Cool or anything, but am I the only one who found your Best Bets winners a little, well, lame? Chains like Maggianos and the Cheesecake Factory among DC finest? And who goes to Lauriol Plaza for Mexican food?
My theory? People who really know the city split their votes among a handful of choices (hidden secrets, nieghborhood favorites, businesses in -gasp- transitional areas, etc.) while a larger number banded together for the safe choice.
The Going Out Gurus: Like your fire, Logan. You're not the only one who disagreed that chains like Maggianos and Cheesecake Factory are the Best Bets -- we received more than 100,000 votes in all 57 categories, and these contests were hotly contested.
Go figure, chains are really popular. And as boring as I may find, say buckets of red sauce, it's clearly what one majority enjoys. Personally I was delighted to see Pizzaria Paradiso a small (indeed on a Friday night, tiny) independant winning "Best Pizza." All the more reason to treasure the one ofs.
Buffalo, NY's free weekly, for example, doesn't include chains in their city-wide "Best of" contest. We determined, this year at least, that in order for our reader's to paint the truest picture of local tastes, all locations must be eligible. That's why I think the lists get more interesting at say, 8th, 9th and 10th places. All of which are posted on the individual results page.
I dig your distinction between going to Lauriol Plaza and going to Lauriol Plaza for Mexican food. Let's you and I get a table at Guajillo. -- Kate
Bethesda, Md.:
Is the Reef's deck open? What is it like?
The Going Out Gurus: Open as of Monday, and it's rad. Read my (Fritz's) review here.
RE: VIP Club:
Sorry if this came through the first time... I keep getting a 500 server error.
So if the line is long at VIP club BUT I am on a guest list - do I wait in the line or do I get to go to the front of the line due to the list?? I'm quite used to simple Latin clubs where there are rarely lines!
The Going Out Gurus: There's a separate line for VIP's VIPs. Just ask one of the bouncers to show you where it is.
Washington, D.C.:
I really miss the beef burritos from Anna's Taqueria in Boston. Do you know where I could find an equivalent? The closest I could come to was Chiptole, but they lack that extra little kick that Anna's had, in my opinion.
The Going Out Gurus: Washington, I (Alexa) think this is a perfect one to throw out to the group. I think Chipotle does a nice job and can't fault that red hot salsa. Beef fans, speak up.
Rio de Janeiro via Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus,
As a Brazilian, I am very excited to see my "seleção" play the Germans on Sunday. Question is, if we win, what to do? I heard that in '94 they closed down a few streets in Georgetown so people could celebrate. Do you guys know if they'll be doing the same this year? I'm posting early because I'm going to be at lunch during the chat, so thanks in advance for your help. É PENTA, BRASIL!
The Going Out Gurus: My guess is that there was no plan to close the streets, the police probably responded wisely to what could have been a safety problem with people partying all over the place. If Georgetown isn't to your liking this year, I'm sure there will be some celebratory wildin' out over at Grill from Ipanema. - Rhome
Bethesda, Md.:
Oh, great and wise Gurus, can you be of help? My dad's birthday is this weekend and my brothers and I want to do something fun along with a meal. He's a history nut, up for just about anything, and a big fan of the hole-in-the-wall eateries in Arlington. Last year we took the barge ride on the C&O Canal before having dinner in Glen Echo. This year -- help!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. Maura here. If Dad's a history buff, you might try the SpyDrive Tour. Call for reservations and remember the -- unaffiliated -- Spy Museum opens July 19. The College Park Aviation Museum, Fort McHenry and Antietam are all short drives away. Have you ever toured the Air and Space Museum's Garber Facility? Reservations are required, but it's worth the trip to see the restoration of hundreds of aircraft. Last time I was there I got a sneak peek at some space suits too, but I'm not sure if that's alwyas on the tour.
As for dinner dives in Arlington, Alexa says El Pollo Rico or take out from Crisp & Juicy. Have fun.
Twilight Happy Hour:
You guys mentioned the Friday Twilight happy hour and I'm going to check it out tomorrow with some friends. Is there a dress code? It sounds like they have great DJs, so do people dance? Also, I have a friend who's 20 but she doesn't drink, will that be an issue to get in? Thanks! And you guys rock!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey there. This is Fritz. There's no dress code at Twilight, and yes, the DJs are great, but from what I've seen, people only really dance later in the night (i.e. after dark). Age shouldn't be an issue, as long as your friend doesn't go near the bar. Enjoy the view.
re: looking for mr. right (as opposed to right now):
It's a cliche, but it's true. If you hang out in places that you think are cool, chances are you'll meet guys who think the same types of things are cool. So whether you're into the punk scene, the prep scene, the activist scene, or whatever, do what you like, hang out in the bars/restaurants/stores you dig, and you'll meet people who are into the same things...
The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) have said the same thing before. Thanks.
Rehoboth Beach, Del.:
I am entertaining six women for a special
70th birthday on Sept. l8. Will you advise me of any and all good theater productions, especially musicals, that will
be presented, preferably in matinee form, on
Sept. l8 in Washington, D.C. If you cannot advise me of this, will you give me the central contact
number I could call to obtain this information?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Rehoboth, Jen here. Your best bet as far as getting a sense of what's on stage around D.C. is to search our theater page for events. We're starting the process of adding next season's plays, and you should see more of this fall's openings in the coming weeks. Though September is right around the corner, many theaters have not yet put individual tickets on sale. For instance, your group may be interested in seeing Brian Stokes Mitchell in "Man of La Mancha" at the National - unfortunately, individual tickets are not on sale yet and the specific dates haven't been announced (it will open sometime in September). But again, check back. Other options: Signature Theatre is producing the comedy "What the Butler Saw" in September, and Studio Theatre presents a musical called "Privates on Parade," starring beloved local thespian Floyd King, from Sept. 11 through Oct. 20. Explore our site in the near future for other ideas and specifics as they are announced.
Arlington, VA:
DC men are one of three things: gay, married, or just plain WEIRD. There's too many of the weird ones with issues for me. Luckily I met a nice blue-collar boy who's better than any of those hotshot weirdos! And you definitely won't meet the decent ones at any bar. Go to Whitey's to hang out and don't bother scoping.
The Going Out Gurus: Hmm, I guess that puts me in the WEIRD category.
Logan Circle, DC:
Logan Circle isn't really an area where you can sun in your yard. Do you have any suggestions of where to go to get some sun locally or maybe an unusual day trip?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Logan. I (Anne) always see people sunning on the hill that goes down into Rock Creek Park from Calvert Street and Connecticut Avenue. How about a public pool? And if you're hankering for a day trip, here's our story on nearby beaches.
Washington, D.C.:
My husband and I are relatively new to the area. Can you make some suggestions for places in D.C. where two 30-year-olds could go out for a couple of drinks and light fare and just hang out? Thanks a bunch!
The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like your in the market for a neighborhood favorite. Maybe one of the these will do: Banana Cafe (Capitol Hill), Austin Grill (Georgetown), Wazuri's roof (Dupont), the Grill from Impanema (Adams Morgan), Marx Cafe (Mt. Pleasant), the Parthenon (Chevy Chase Circle). I'll confess, on a Friday night I like cocktails on Wazuri's roof and dinner on funny back garden patio at Caravan Grill across the street.
Fort Reno:
Thinking about heading out to see Fugazi on Monday night at Ft. Reno. What's the deal with bringing in food/drink? How early do you think we should arrive (I think it's a 7:30 show)? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: This is Joe and if you want to be close to the stage for the Fujazzy show you should get there early. But if you've been before you know that a hill slopes up from the stage so you'll have a pretty good view even if you get there late. No glass bottles allowed. No alcohol. No bad attitudes.
Arlington, for DC girl trying to meet men:
I'd suggest joining a young professionals group like at the Corcoran or Smithsonian, or one of the DC area volunteering groups for singles.
I'd be leery of trying to meet men in bars. I just think the pickup scene is cheesy and that's pretty much what you'll get - some guy on the prowl, unless you're lucky.
The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, read more about those young members groups right here. Single Volunteers of D.C. and D.C. Cares (they have a Social Circle) are also geared for people who meet people. - MM
Bethesda:
For the past two summers I have hosted a group of high school friends at my place for a weekend of catching up, having fun, and catching the Phillies when they play at Camden Yards (I am from Philly, originally). The past two years, I've taken my friends out to dinner and going out in Bethesda, but this year I am thinking of expanding a bit, maybe going downtown or something - my question though, is we'll be a group of mid-20's guys - yes, some of us are recovering "frat guys" and since some of us haven't seen each other in a year, we might get a big nostaligic and/or rowdy. Basically, I'm looking for a place where 6-8 of us can go, drink beer, hang out, and not care if we don't meet the dress code...any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Bethesda. I (Fritz) can help you with everything except for getting rowdy ... if you do that, you're on your own. A few places you might want to consider: Ireland's Four Provinces in Cleveland Park, Millie and Al's in Adams Morgan, the Brickskeller or Buffalo Billiards in Dupont, Capitol City Brewing Company, the Irish Times and My Brother's Place on the Hill ... That's a start.
Logan Circle:
Fritz,
Where's the German after-party going to be in the event of an upset over Brasil?
The Going Out Gurus: Cafe Mozart or Gordon Biersch, maybe?
But it ain't gonna happen without Ballack.
Rosslyn, Va.:
Hi GOGs!
I thought you would be the best people to turn to with this question. I recently finished up grad school in this area and realized that in two years I had completely neglected the cultural side to this city. I've made myself a list of things to re-learn and I'm hoping you can shed some light in one in particular.
Where are the best places to go for desserts? I know about places like Cheesecake Factory, but I'm wondering about places that might be more intimate. Such things are rarely discussed in reviews or Zagat's.
P.S. If this works, I may come back with more questions!
The Going Out Gurus: Rosslyn, that Cheescake Factory gives me the willies, though judging by the Best bets poll, I (Alexa) might be alone in this. The folks at home voted it top for sweetstuffs. Size matters, apparently. My fave at the mo is the custard and sorbet from the Del Ray Dreamery which I seem to be having almost daily (it shows). All natural ingredients, it's the best I've encountered this side of Ted Drew's, better. I just wrote about it.
Washington, DC:
As an intern of age, who has many friends and fellow interns in the 19-20 range, I was hoping that you could tell me where are they most likely to get served? Maybe you can't answer this question, but lets be honest, there are thousands out there right now wanting to know the exact same thing. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC, Joe here and don't think for a second we're going to answer that question. We know for a fact that John Ashcroft reads this chat regularly and he'll shut us down in a hurry if he even sniffs a hint that we're encouraging illegal activity. Call Fritz later though and he'll tip you to everything.
Washington, DC:
Any pay-what-you-can previews?
The Going Out Gurus: This isn't exactly pay-what-you-can, but it is free, which is technically better: Next weekend, Olney Theatre will host outdoor performances of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." More performances will follow at a number of venues in Prince George's County. - Jen
WDC:
Do you guys know how late you can get food at reef? Is it worth going for food, or stick to drinks?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, WDC. This is Fritz. The food is great -- especially the Buffalo hangar steak and catfish. Kate and I are pretty sure they serve the fill menu til 10 or so, and then smaller plates until midnight.
Pregnant ladies, underage women, and brides, oh my!:
I am a first time maid of honor who is in desperate need of help! The bachlorette party is in two weeks, and I need to find a place (in D.C. or Maryland) that can accomadate a bridesmaid in her third trimester, the bride's underage sister, and a few big city partiers. I am hoping to find a place where we could all have a nice dinner (not too nice though, most of us still have college debt!), then walk (minus the pregnant one perhaps) to a cool night spot.
Are there any areas of town/specific resturants/clubs you or the posters might recommend?
Thank you so much!
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here and I bet La Ferme has just what you're looking for. It's tucked away in Chevy Chase and has a pretty space available for private parties. Does an afternoon tea hold any appeal? Downtown, the Henley Park Hotel really cutes it up with heart-shaped sammies and cookies. Any one else have a favorite?
Cubicle 20037:
Hi dudes and dudettes
Do most of the Folklife events wrap up at 5 pm? I can't get there until after work.
The Going Out Gurus: Cubicle, no problem. Many events are scheduled during the day, but there are always evening concerts. Most start at 5:30 p.m., which is still on the early side, but I (Maura) say worth a trip. Tonight's is "Mountain Music, Desert Music: Folk Traditions of Mongolia and Rajasthan" Check our Folklife Festival schedule for more.
re: desparate in dc:
i'm sorry but someone really needs to throw this out. you don't need a man to be happy so let's stop complaining and just have fun!
The Going Out Gurus: You are SO RIGHT. Everyone, get out and enjoy yourselves.
Chipotle Lover:
Great price. Great food. Great staff. Great atmosphere. Simply great. What more can I say?
The Going Out Gurus: Owned by McDonalds? Overrun with children?
Pizza!:
Generous George's was seriously robbed! The winners must make their pizza out of gold to beat out George's.
The Going Out Gurus: Is that you, George?
Washinton, DC rant:
Ok, so I went to 9:30 Club last night (props to them for winning best place to see live music) for the Babel Gilberto show (awesome). But what makes people think they can carry on loud conversations during the middle of the show? I understand making a few comments here and there, but people have full out conversations! loudly!! agh! I know everyone is there to have a good time, but come on!! Where's the respect??
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi DC, you're not alone. This is Joe and I find it to be a real drag when people talk loudly during shows, especially if the band is not playing loud enough to drown them out. Also, I don't understand paying money to see a band and then just ignoring them to talk with people you see all the time. But I don't know what the solution is short of clubs and venues actively requesting patrons to keep it down.
Bridesmaidville, DC:
Going out gurus, I need you like never before so I'm submitting early! A friend and I are planning a wedding shower and we want to do something casual and fun, we were thinking maybe minigolf and batting cages, go-karts, etc. Where on god's green earth can you do these things anywhere near DC (the closer in town the better)? Or where can we have a fantastic bowling alley? Help!
The Going Out Gurus: Now this sounds like a fun bridal shower! Here's a listing of local miniature golf courses and batting cages. I (Jen) am not too sure about go-karts (anyone else know?) but I can recommend a fun bowling alley: Tuffy Leeman's in Wheaton. It's old-school and all duckpin, so that might be a good option. And may I also suggest roller-skating?
L Street NW:
A co-worker swears the downtown fireworks are done first in WV this weekend and then again on the Mall on the 4th? I say she is wrong, wrong, wrong -- I've got a five riding on it -- could you help a brother out?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, L Street, Anne here. The fireworks happening in Harpers Ferry this Saturday are related to the downtown celebration in the fact that they're also organized by the National Park Service. But it wouldn't be right to consider it a mere rehearsal, I think. The town is having its very own full-throttle Fourth of July celebration on Saturday, with bands, a costumed Frederick Douglass and fireworks at 9:45 p.m.
Chipote owned by McDonald's?:
No wonder I have only eaten there once. That, and the mental image of my Jack Russell puppy who is about the same size as a baracoa (sp).
The Going Out Gurus: And tastier.
Tyson:
I know that the Smithsonian exhibit on Egypt opens on Sunday. How do you get tickets and where is is located exactly? Is it free?
The Going Out Gurus: Tyson, the Egyptian exhibition is at the National Gallery of Art's East Wing (that's 4th and Constitution). As mentioned before, you can order tickets in advance through Ticketmaster (but not for dates before July 6). The fees through Ticketmaster come to about $3.75 per ticket.
Entry to the exhibition is actually free. If you show up at the museum you can wait in line to see it that day. This means on the weekends, line up early, very early. MM
Alexandria, Va.:
Hey GOGs -- I've got tix for "West Side Story" for this Saturday at 2 p.m. Our seats are in the orchestra section. Having never sat under the covered awning, what can I expect as far as dress code? If I roll in wearing shorts and a camp shirt (short-sleeves, button down, straight hem, un-tucked) will I be under-dressed?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have been to matinees under the awning at Wolf Trap, and dress is fairly casual. A decent pair of shorts (i.e. not cut-offs) and a shirt like the one you described should be just fine. If you want to get a teeny bit dressed-up, you could wear a casual summer skirt, but I don't think you'll be underdressed if you don't.
Washington, D.C.:
I've been assigned the task of finding the current "trendy, hip, place to be" location to host a holiday party for 75 of our best vendors (architects, contractors, real estate professionals) and business associates. It will be cocktails on a weekday evening in December -- never to early to book the date! Rumor in the office is that because I'm young, single, and live in the District, I'm up on these things. Any suggestions to help me perpetuate this illusion of knowledge? Last year's was at DC Coast and was very well received.
The Going Out Gurus: Are you game enough to try a really new venue like the Hotel Monaco? I'm jumping ahead of myself (they don't open until July), but what architect, contractor, etc. isn't dying to see how the Old Post Office adjacent to the MCI Center has been transformed into a groovy hotel. Why not contact the Klimpton Group and be their first holiday party, maybe they'd cut you a deal. Otherwise, what about Ortanique? Also, is there something useful in our list of recommendations for rehersal dinner location? -- Kate
Re: La Ferme:
Very classy, beautiful restaurant. Had a private function there a few years ago and was very happy with the results.
The Going Out Gurus: Oh yes?
Washington, D.C.:
Gurus.
How did Fugazi not even place in the top 10 for best local band? I was surprised to not see them at #1 but not even a win, place or show, that I was shocked.
The Going Out Gurus: Uhhhhhhhhhhh, let's see. This is Joe and personally, I think it's hard to make an argument for putting any other local band ahead of Fugazi. That said, the list of nominations was limited to local bands that have mp3s on our washingtonpost.com MP3 site. So Fugazi only got write in votes. Does this rise to the level of anti-Fugazi conspiracy? Not really. But I'm sure it's the reason they didn't place.
Washington, D.C.:
Hi there --
I'm looking for a quality DIVE mexican restaurant in D.C. or Virginia. You know the type? The one where Combo #11 is a taco, burrito and enchilada and Vegetarian D is a burrito, enchilada and quesedilla.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: What about Anita's? Green chili in a basket.
Washington, D.C.:
FYI, Twlight is NOT open to those under 21. You made that mistake twice in a row now.
The Going Out Gurus: From what I (Fritz) have been told by the hotel managers and one of the promoters, they can't make it 21 and over. I specifically asked Shawn about this before the article ran, and he told me they prefer to keep it over 21, which I understand. But if the hotel says one thing ... I don't know. I'll try to get an answer once and for all.
Re: Rant about noise:
I dunno. I saw the Magnetic Fields last year at the 9:30 and you could have heard a pin drop. It was also good that someone's cell phone rang and Stephen Merritt called them on it and embarrassed them -- take that!
I personally feel no shame in politely shushing those around me if they're talking too loud.
The Going Out Gurus: There you go. Though shushing huge drunk guys doesn't always work.
Washington, D.C.:
Sadly, I'm moving out of the D.C. area and would like to have a going away bash. My apartment is too small so I'd like to conduct the festivities in a bar that has a private room to rent, preferably in Dupont/Adams Morgan. The budget is pretty limited, so cheap or free (there'll be no problem guaranteeing a bar tab) is best. I know about Stetson's and Childe Harold -- any other suggestions? Thanks. I'll miss you guys when I'm gone.
The Going Out Gurus: We'll miss you, too, but thanks to the Internet, you can reach us on the Web wherever you go. I (Jen) suggest you take a look at this feature Fritz wrote about private parties in bars. Also try Cities; I believe it has a private room with no rental fee.
Herndon, Va.:
Hi Gurus!
I've recently moved to the area and need a little help. A friend is visiting this weekend and we want to go out to some gay dance clubs. I've already checked your wonderful search engine and I am leaning toward Badlands, Foodbar D.C., and Chaos. Do you or anyone else have any great ideas for a straight female and a gay male?
(If anyone out there knows the Boston gay scene, we both love Machine and ManRay.)
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Herndon. I (Fritz) am not familiar with Boston's gay dance clubs, but I'll try to help anyway. Foodbar and Chaos are good choices -- Foodbar especially, because you can move between floors. If you go on Saturday, Badlands has a ladies night, Liquid Ladies. For the drag scene and dancing, head to Ziegfield's, although it's a hike from the other places on your list.
Shepherd Park, Washington, D.C.:
Great job, GOG.
I know I'm a little early with this, but I'm trying to make some plans. I've heard that they are NOT doing music at the Sylvan Theater on the 4th before the fireworks this year. True? If not, what's to do before the show?
The Going Out Gurus: Oh, we like planners, Shepherd Park! The group that normally puts on the concert at the Sylvan Theatre is not organizing it this year. I (Anne) have heard the the Park Service is putting one on instead, starting at 5. We'll keep you posted with more details. Other things you could do: Folklife Festival, the reading of the Declaration of Independence at Union Station, concerts at the Woodrow Wilson plaza ... I could go on interminably .... So for more ideas, I'll direct you to our Fourth of July Guide.
Alex, Andrea & Virginia:
Hello gorgeous Guru's... please help as always! This Friday night will be the first date between her (Pips) and me (Goose) after spending a week or two on match.com
I know the happy hours and the clubs and the places around the city. Do any of you have any special suggestions for two strangers with these nicknames to do and please consider we could join MENSA.
The Guru's are shining jewels among ordinary uncut gems. Thanks again!
The Going Out Gurus: AAV, let's hope Pip(s) has no great expectations about this and keep it low key. I (Maura) say take your animal instincts, Goose, to the Zoo (voted best first date and open 'til 8). Have a walk around and then stop up the street for a pint at Nanny's or wine at Bardeo, whatever suits you. Stop in at Spices for a bite: Food is good, but service, slow. You'll have time to chat.
Bethesda, Md.:
Hi. I'm looking for a sort of Middle Eastern type place where you can sit on the floor and drink Turkish coffee, etc., low lighting, and all that. Any ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: Marrakesh, Taste of Morocco?
Alexandria, Va.:
If you don't want to fight the crowd and security on the Mall 4th of July, where is the best place to get a view of the fireworks?
The Going Out Gurus: Check our map of other places to watch the downtown fireworks, on our Fourth of July Guide.
Cube, DC:
What is happening with the new Sofitel on 15th and H? I'm starting to hear some buzz but maybe you can fill me in!
The Going Out Gurus: It's opening and there's a Michelin chef at the helm.
Washington, D.C.:
Linda from the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian wants to know your thoughts about MGM’s newly released “Windtalkers”! Did the film generate interest in Native cultures and their unique roles in the U.S. military? Attempts to assimilate Native American tribes into mainstream culture have included severe government, religious, and educational interference, yet Native tribes are unwavering in their stand on patriotism. What would you have liked to learn more about that the film didn’t cover?
If you are interested in learning more about the Navajo Code Talker experience, you can meet two Code Talkers, Joe Kellwood and Arthur J. Hubbard, Sr. on July 3 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. They will make a guest appearance at the Discovery Theatre (West Hall) in the Smithsonian Arts & Industries Building, located next to the Smithsonian Castle.
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have not seen "Windtalkers," and therefore have no insightful thoughts about it. But here's a link to our reviews, and the information about the Smithsonian event is now duly noted. Thanks.
Woodley Park, Washington, D.C.:
Dear GOGs,
My 17-year-old cousin will be visiting us this weekend and I need ideas of things to do with her (mostly during the day). She is not into going to museums or the folk festival, but she loves dancing and going to the theater. Please help a 30-year-old figure out what to do with youngsters!
The Going Out Gurus: What about the hip-hop aerobics class (it's drop in) on Saturday mornings at the Joy of Motion in Dupont? You could lunch at Teaism or Baja Fresh afterwards, it doesn't have to be too expensive. On Saturday at noon the D.C. Caribbean Carnival parade dances it's way down Georgia Ave starting at noon. I bet she thinks you're really cool, and she might have fun just trying on all the lip glosses in Sephora too. If you chose to wander around Georgetown I recommend you check out Accessories, Monsoon's sister shop in Georgetown Park, full of small, funky extras that someone on a babysitting budget might find affordable.
Washington, DC:
Hi GOGs! Do you know anything about Saphire, the restaurant opening up in Bethesda?
The Going Out Gurus: Saphire (and no, I'm not spelling it wrong) has been open for a few weeks now, although the grand opening is Saturday. I (Fritz) have been, and while the drinks are fine, the interior leaves much to be desired. The food's good, though.
Petworth, Washington, D.C. feeling snobby:
Oh, gurus, I hate to say it, but WHO voted in the reader's choice pool? Good LORD, what WERE they thinking?!
OK, having vented, I have to comment that I hope people reading it realize that it seems to be, um, skewed toward the lowest common denominator, in many of its categories.
The Going Out Gurus: Wouldn't be Got Plans? without you, Pet.
Paradiso:
Thanks very much to the esteemed readers and voters who properly put Paradiso atop the list of Best Pizza in D.C. 2 Amys can't hold a candle to Paradiso, despite some claims that it is now the top place to go.
Also, Del Ray Dreamery has nothing on the Frozen Dairy Bar.
The Going Out Gurus: No limbo for Paradiso.
Washington, D.C.:
Gurus:
Will First Friday still be in force next Friday, even though it is a long 4th of July weekend?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. Maura again. It seems First Friday is indeed on for next week.
re: single and searching:
that is a ridiculous question. people are all over the place. there is no "one place" to go to meet someone with all of those characteristics. open your eyes. i've met people at giant, airports, book stores. the world is your oyster!
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks. Here are our favorite oysters.
Help me, please!!:
Hello GOGs. Love the chat and you (and the readers) give great advice. So I just KNEW that I could count on you for an answer to my question. I've decided that for personal entertainment, I want to buy an unfinished wood bookshelf and stain/paint it myself. However, I can't seem to find a store that sells (preferably) pre-assembled, unfinished furniture anywhere in the area. Any ideas where I might look? Thanks!!
The Going Out Gurus: HMP, I (Maura) know many who've had good luck with Saah furniture in Rockville. 301/424-6911.
Washington, D.C.:
Fritz --
Stimmen Sie darin überein, daß Deutschland nach Brasilien verliert?
The Going Out Gurus: natürlich
Washington, D.C.:
The Reef -- what do you think? Group of about 10 of us for a fun evening of chatting and drinks. What time should we get there if we don't want to wait in a long line on a Friday night?
The Going Out Gurus: 5, 6 o'clock.
U Street, Washington, D.C.:
I'm looking for a great place to eat steak, but not in a fancy steakhouse environment. I'm thinking, sit at the bar, drink beer, eat meat -- a casual affair to say the least.
Also, any idea when Georgetowne Station is going to open back up? (It was a decent option for this sort of evening.)
Thanks for any ideas!
The Going Out Gurus: Bistrot du Coin?
Washington, DC:
Capital Q was robbed! Hands down the best bbq in the area and this is coming from a native Texan.
The Going Out Gurus: One more vote...
Arlingtonian ISO nearby Small Town 4th Celebration:
I've done the Mall and have watched fireworks from Rosslyn numerous times. This year I long for a small town New England-esque Independence Day celebrations of my youth! Know of any towns that have any one or more of the following: A little parade, balloons, dunk tanks, booths with homemade pies, lemonade, hot dogs stands, and watermelon by the slice, and low key fireworks celebration? Want to avoid crowds, lack of parking, and hopefully traffic -- and all within a 90-minute drive preferred. Thanks for your ideas!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, AISOnST4C. Many towns in the area really get back to their small town roots with their Fourth of July celebrations. It's like you'd forget that big box stores lining 6-lane roads never existed. Parking, of course, can still be a challenge. This is Anne, and I'd suggest several spots for a small town feel: family spirit in Palisades, the firefighter competition in Fairfax, a huge Independence Day parade in Takoma Park, free hotdogs in Herndon.
Glover Park, DC:
G'day Gurus. Noticed the old Julio's has
'Now hiring' signs in the window. I've
heard that the space will soon be a
down-home restaurant called Lot 81 or
something, brought to us by the makers
of Red or ESL ...??
Can you shed some light on the currently
dark space?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Glover Park, the ESL guys are opening Local 16 later this summer -- they're saying it's going to serve lots of organic food. I (Fritz) can't wait.
6th Street:
Best Slice: Pizza Mart on 18th in Adams Morgan. Huge and good!
The Going Out Gurus: And greasy! And you'll regret it in the morning!
20007:
Hey guys-I'm enjoying the chat! Can you recommend a place in Dupont where 2 people can enjoy a 3rd date (i.e. get to know each other better but in a fun environment?)
The Going Out Gurus: Have you been to the basement at Cafe Citron? It's relatively new (and the airconditioner works). The happy hour at Georgetown Seafood Grill (at the bar only) is reliable too. It's Monday through Friday 4-7, Sat., 5:30 - 8, Sundays 6-8. On offer oysters, clams are 50 cents; mussels and calimari start at $3 asa glass of Champagne! I've had rough luck with the service at the Tabard Inn, but their garden is delightful. And I'm a sucker for a scoop of "Fred and Ginger" from Lee's Ice Cream and sitting on a bench in the Circle people watching. -- Kate
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.:
It's hot and I wanna go swimmin'. Any public pools in/near the city where I can pay a couple bucks to get in (or pay nothing) and not need a membership?
The Going Out Gurus: Yup, 23rd and M is best, and probably closest. Here are some others. -- Kate
Arlington, VA:
Hi, GOGs!
We traditionally view the Mall Fireworks from the other side of the Potomac. We picnic on the grass along the bikepath next to the GW parkway. That must make it National Parkland, I would guess.
Do you know of any restrictions/security rules for that side of the river? I am almost dreading the 4th because of the irony of celebrating freedom with security checkpoints!
The Going Out Gurus: I (Anne) haven't heard about any restrictions there, Arlington. We'll be sure to give you details on any additional security measures as soon as we hear.
Van Ness, Washington, D.C.:
I know nothing about wine, but I'd like to learn. Where could I find a good (but not too expensive) wine tasting class?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Van Ness. I (Maura) know of three area organizations that offering wine tasting classes and events: The Wine Tasting Association, Washington Wine Academy and D.C. Wine Brats. Most are pretty reasonable.
Glover Park:
Did you guys go to check out Smith Point? What did you think?
The Going Out Gurus: Sorry, Glover, this is Kate and I've not had time to go yet, but hopefully Friday night's the night.
dupont:
hey gogs, another twilight question for ya - how big is this roof top bar? tomorrow is my 25th b-day and i have a group of around 50 people showing up there tomorrow.
The Going Out Gurus: Good lord. It's not THAT huge. I'd email the promoter at shawn@xsinteractive.com and tell him you're coming.
Washington:
I've only been in DC for a month now - courtesy of a summer law internship - but my take thus far is that it is EXTREMELY segregated (socially and otherwise). Are there any spots - i.e. clubs - that are not "white", "Persian", "Black", etc. and instead has a good MIX of diverse humanity?
The Going Out Gurus: Crush, Chief Ike's Mambo Room and Aroma come to mind. Penang is a good bet on Fridays and Saturdays. We had to think about this one a bit because the problem you mention is a real one. You might want to try Latin clubs (Zanzibar on Wednesdays, Habana Village) and house music spots too. The Saturday M3 events at Five should work out nicely for you. I always go when Dennis Perez and Rich Medina are playing. - Rhome
Moving Away Guy:
I had a going away party at Big Hunt several years back. Worked out great, though we did get a few interlopers coming into "our" half of the bar looking for the open bar.
The Going Out Gurus: Did they get a drink or not?
Cube Deluxe, K Street:
Hey gurus...lotsa the other live onliners have their pics up, but you guys and gals don't. what gives? are you trying to protect your anonymity?
luv ya guts
The Going Out Gurus: Because no one would want to be our friends if they knew what we looked like.
For the Dive Mexican Searcher:
Abi in Arlington on Columbia Pike is super-fabulous, although it definitely qualifies as a dive. It's kind of hidden behind the 7-11 near the Cinema Drafthouse.
The Going Out Gurus: Okay.
Washington, D.C., Re: Mexican Dive:
Try the tiny Mexican place on Wisconsin between the Fresh Fields and Sushi-Ko. Doesn't really have a name, so we call it "Margarita's" after the sign in the window and the excellent $3 margaritas. Food is authentic, cheap and good.
The Going Out Gurus: More mexican...
Fairfax:
Hello!
Has anyone been to Jazz in the Garden at the sculpture garden on the Mall? How would you rate it? Is the food any good or should I take my date for music and eat somewhere else afterwards?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Fairfax. I (Maura) haven't been to Jazz in the Garden yet this year, but think it's a great idea for your date. The Pavilion Cafe in the garden serves decent fare. Tapas are on special for jazz nights. If you're looking for something else afterwards, try Jaleo or Cafe Atlantico, just up the street.
Diversity in Bars:
I find Reef pretty diverse. It's one of the things I really like about it.
The Going Out Gurus: Me too, says Fritz.
dupont:
thanks for the info on twilight. i actually already let shawn know we were coming and they have been extremely accomodating. shawn has hooked us up with getting on the guest list as well as reserving a few tables for us. they didn't seem to mind our large group at all. i was very pleased!
The Going Out Gurus: Good to know. Thanks.
Gaithersburg, MD:
Hey Gurus,
What do you think about watching the fireworks at Annapolis Harbour? Do you kow of a nice place to go for dinner before hand with a view of the works?
The Going Out Gurus: Some folks like O'Leary's among Annapolis restaurants, and Fritz recommends Pusser's Landing.
Washington, D.C.:
Can you guys put up the Carter Baron schedule link? Wanna see when Canyon is playing. Gracias.
The Going Out Gurus: Canyon is tomorrow night, says Eric Brace, in between Juniper Lane and Army of Me. The music starts at 7:30.
Pregnant ladies, underage women, and brides, oh my, revisted:
Sounds great (thank you!), but is there anywhere nearby to kick things up a notch after dinner?
The Going Out Gurus: Oh, I'm not sure how many notches Chevy Chase has left. Kate again, La Ferme may not be your choice if you want to go a bit cwazy. If you'd like something wilder, perhaps a spot in Bethesda like Bacchus on Norfolk Ave. or Black's on Woodmont is a better fit. There are night spots nearby, but your underage guests won't have much choice either.
Mexican food:
I don't understand this city! Places like Cactus Cantina and Rio Grande are always on the 100 best and best Mexican food list and these places are just overrated, and plain bad with really long waits. Rio Grand won't even make ANYTHING vegetarian. Sorry, rant over. Go to Guapo's, but only the one in Tenleytown.
The Going Out Gurus: Okay, Tenleytown it is...
Bethesda, Md.:
Some friends and I are looking for alternatives for the 4th of July. We're trying to avoid the Mall/monuments and the various barcrawls/beerfests in the area. We checked the 4th of July guide and nothing exciting really jumped out. Half of us are from D.C. and half from Baltimore, so we've done the harbor, Oregon Ridge, Columbia and the Mall. Any ideas for a co-ed group in their early 30s looking for something new? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: How about Annapolis or the Eastern Shore?
Alexandria, VA:
HELP! My inlaws are going to be in town for the fourth. We're trying to find something to do that doesn't involve the Capital 4th celebration -- since it's a zoo, tough to park, and my inlaws probably won't be thrilled with the heat + a long walk from the metro. Got any other ideas? Something that involves fireworks maybe?
Thanks! You're a marriage and stress saver!
The Going Out Gurus: You could stay in the air-conditioning and watch the concert live on PBS. Even smaller fireworks celebrations will have crowds, and some parking/walking challenges.
The Going Out Gurus:
Wow. That was a busy session. If we didn't get to your question, we're sorry, and encourage you to try again next week. Speaking of next week, the holiday means we're doing Got Plans at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3. Join us then.
re GOG's pics:
I bet you just don't want thousands of chatters and readers coming up to your at bars, restuarant, clubs... like Tom Sietesma, although you guys and gals are much more hip!
The Going Out Gurus: Awwww, thanks. But Fritz loves talking to people at bars, so if you see him, feel free to talk his ear off.
