Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more

The Going Out Gurus:
We are hot to the trot today, my friends. Joe, especially, is in Got Plans heaven because we've not one, but TWO chats this afternoon. The second, please take note, begins at 2 sharp and is a special Weddings edition, hosted by our very own cupid, Jen Chaney. This means two things -- that we shan't be answering any wedding questions in this first hour, and that we shall be ending promptly at 2. In other matters, we're very pleased with our guide to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and have all kinds of tricks planned for the Fourth. But enough about our triumphs, let's hear it from you....
Eager in DC:
You guys rock & always have the answers. Do you know if the roof deck - 'Reef' is open yet?? Due to the great weather, I would like to go there for happy hour tonight. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Eager. This is Fritz. Brian Harrison tells me the Reef's rooftop was supposed to open this weekend, but they've had trouble getting their inspections done. Shame, as it's going to be so nice this weekend. He's now targeted Monday for the grand opening, and I can't wait.
Washington, D.C.:
Gurus:
What is the closest Metro stop to Third Thursday? Gallery Place?
Recommendations for a place to eat with someone I want to know better?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. Maura here. You've got it: Gallery Place is your Metro stop for Third Thursdays.
As for nearby restaurants, your might try Jaleo, Cafe Atlantico or Austin Grill.
Georgetown, Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus! Just thought I'd give a little back to the chat I get so much out of every week.
Here's my tip: National Theatre is running their free summer film series on Monday nights again! Coming up are greats like "Citizen Kane," "Do the Right Thing" and "The Color Purple." Check www.nationaltheatre.org for more details.
The Going Out Gurus: Good call, Georgetown. You can also find info about the Summer Cinema series here. Definitely check it out if you have the chance. - Jen
Washington, D.C.:
Have you heard anything about the ESPNZone showing the U.S.-Germany game tomorrow morning?
The Going Out Gurus: We have indeed, Washington, and you can read all about it on our "Where to Watch the World Cup" section. It's $25, the most expensive viewing party in town. I (Fritz) will be heading out to RFK.
Downtown, Washington, D.C.:
Hey guys, I just wanted to tip you off to something very disappointing that was discussed on last week's chat: The cheap first two row seats to the John Leguizamo show. I called the number you posted and there was a message saying the same thing you guys said: at 10 a.m. at the Warner Theater box office, tickets for the first two rows for that night of the show will be available for $16.25 on a first-come, first-serve basis.
So I go down there at 9:15 and I'm about 15th in line. I'm thinking I'm good because there's gotta be about, what, at least 30 seats per row? Well, the guy from the Warner Theater comes out at five minutes 'til 10 a.m. and announces that there are only -25- tickets available TOTAL and it's only TWO per person! Everyone was like, "WHAAAT?!"
Why wouldn't they say that on their recording? Me and everyone in line were furious! Obviously only the first 12 people in line got the discount tickets. I ended up paying $50 for 14th row.
And what made me even more upset was that when I went to the show, there were obviously WAY more than 25 seats in the first two rows!
The Going Out Gurus: Well that sounds like a major bummer. I (Jen) am sorry you had a bad experience, but I hope you at least enjoyed Leguizamo.
Dupont, Washington, D.C.:
Gurus,
I was trying to find information on the D.C. botanical gardens. When I typed Botanical Gardens into the search engine, two gardens in the burbs came up but nothing on the D.C. one. Can you direct me to the page?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Read about the U.S. Botanic Garden right here. Technically "al" is not in the name so the search probably didn't work. Just for you Dupont, I (Maura) will fix it so the search works either way. Thanks.
Washington, D.C. Soccer Fan:
Looks like lots of places are showing World Cup games at the 7:30 a.m. times. Has World Cup fever struck Washington so much that I need to drag my butt out of bed extra early to get a good view tomorrow morning, or can I show up at 7:25 in most spots and be okay? Maybe it totally depends on where you watch?
Cheers!
The Going Out Gurus: More football/futbol/fussball questions. I (Fritz) would not take any chances by showing up at the last minute, unless you're going to RFK -- I can't see 50,000 people watching the game there. I suspect that even places like Rumors and Stetson's will have lines when they open at 7, never mind Lucky Bar or Capitol Lounge. The earlier the better, I say.
WorldCup Mania!:
So what's the story for Friday's game? I heard "they" are opening RFK at 6:30 a.m. and putting the game up on the JumboTron. True? And if so, will there be vendors selling drinks and food? (Or should I bring my own Starbucks?)
The Going Out Gurus: See the above link for all the info, but you heard right -- they're opening early and showing the game on the 33-foot Jumbotron. I (Fritz) have been assured that coffee and danish will be sold at concession stands, and that all the usual policies -- including no outside food or drink -- will be enforced. Sorry.
Arlington, Va.:
I told my husband all I want for my birthday is to have a nice dinner where we can also dance (ballroom style, not top 40 jigs). I know I need to to some research because he won't. Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, Timpano's does it, I (Alexa) know that. And also there's dancing at the Park at Glen Echo, and then dinner afterwards at the Inn.
Washington, D.C.:
What are some of the biggest and best used bookstores in the area (and the general location)?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. Kate here. I like Second Story Books -- all of them, but the motherload off Rockville Pike might be the best place for used books. Second Story's staff really know their collection and it's nicely crossed reference, so I really have no exuse to be reading "Four Blondes."
Bethesda, Md.:
Happy Thursday, Gurus! Jen -- you really added some great thoughts to yesterdays wedding chat. Now, here's my question: "Aida" is coming to the Kennedy Center in July, I've heard great things about it but wanted a few more opinions before I plunk down my hard-earned cash for tickets. Anyone seen "Aida"?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Bethesda, glad you enjoyed yesterday's wedding discussion. As Alexa mentioned earlier, there's more to come at 2 p.m. - can't you smell the nuptial excitement? Regarding "Aida," I've heard mixed reviews of the version that originally played on Broadway; it did win some Tonys, including one for best musical score. I (Jen) haven't seen it myself, so I'm throwing this out to the crowd: Any body got thoughts on "Aida"?
Arlington, Va.:
Hi all.
I have a friend from L.A. that is gonna visit me during July 4 weekend. I would like to know if the museums and restaurants will be open on Independence Day. And if yes, do I need to make reservations early if I plan to take her to some place nice like DC coast?
Also, it would be great if you guys can recommend some places that I can take her to other than museums. Thanks a lot!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington. Maura again. The good news is all museums will be open on July 4. Be sure to check out the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the Mall as well. The not so good news: some restaurants will be closed. I'd call a few that you're interested in, just to be sure. Also, take note that the Smithsonian Metro stop will be closed on July 4th. Read more about that right here and prepare for some messy Metro.
Woodley Park, Washington, D.C.:
A friend's birthday is next week, and we're doing some scheming. How is Cafe Atlantico for a celebratory dinner party of about 8-12 20somethings? We love Latin music and food (not to mention drinks) -- any other suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Woodley, this is Alexa and I say that's a perfect spot. I have no improvements to make on that plan bearing in mind your specifics.
Re: Bachelorette parties:
I see in the Bachelorette Party story that you give suggestions for strip clubs featuring male dancers (Wet, Hangar Club, etc.). How about equal time for the fellas? Where are the best gentlemen's clubs for the discerning bachelor party?
The Going Out Gurus: The entertainment guide generally doesn't delve into the realm of recommending strip clubs. I (Jen) briefly mentioned a few as part of the bachelorette feature because a lot of bachelorettes like to go that route. But maybe we should do a similar feature on bachelor parties that would recommend a number of things (not just strip clubs) guys can do to celebrate. In any event, I'm certainly no expert on strip clubs of any variety, but my understanding is that a lot of bachelor parties wind up at Camelot. If you want more info wedding or bachelor party info, tune in for the wedding discussion at 2.
Arlington, Va.:
A few friends and I wanted to check out Andalu for ladies night tonight. We're all women in our mid-to-late 20s. Any idea what the crowd is like on Thursday nights? And do they have a DJ or live music tonight?
The Going Out Gurus: I think you're making a good choice. There's an open bar for the ladies. Rafa and Taha are the DJ's tonight and they're guaranteed to drop house tunes that will put the boogie in your body. The last few Thursday nights I've been there the crowd is usually chill and a bit upscale without being snotty. - Rhome
Falls Church, Va.:
I have absolutely no stake in it whatsoever, but you guys should recommend Andale (the former Mark) when people write in for restaurant recs near the MCI center. It is DELICIOUS Mexican. It's more $$ than Austin Grill for sure, but not too much more. It's probably cheaper than Jaleo and much quieter and easier to get seated. It's a great place.
The Going Out Gurus: Falls Church, glad you liked it. I'm not quite as enthusiastic, but that's just me (Alexa).
Alexandria, Va.:
What can you tell me about a bar called Whitey's? I've heard it's a chill atmosphere to meet casual young people.
The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) love Whitey's, a divey sort of bar in Arlington. It's a great place to hang out, eat cheap food, drink specially-priced pitchers of beer and shoot pool. It's very casual and attracts a 25-40 year-old crowd, but the meeting and greeting is up to you.
Washington, D.C. -- Looking for a Shagadelic Restaurant!:
I am planning the ultimate dinner and movie night for a group of about 14 friends, for the new Austin Powers movie, "Goldmember," which is coming out at the end of July. Do you have any suggestions for a funky and groovy, restaurant for dinner (consistent with the movie theme -- either a la spy theme or a la '70s theme), in the D.C. area (yep, I will even venture into Maryland or Virginia for the perfect shagadelic restaurant!).
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Shadelic. What a fun idea - and you're planning ahead, which I (Jen) like. I think you'd be better off hitting a lounge that serves food instead of a restaurant. Try Topaz, Bar Rouge or the appropriately named Spy Lounge. Have a fab time, baby.
Regarding Aida...:
Saw Aida in New York and felt it was just OK. There are no memorable songs, and the story was a little slow for me. I like to see a musical and leave the theater humming the music, like I did with Rent and Les Miseables.
The Going Out Gurus: Here you go, "Aida" advice-seeker. (P.S. "Rent" rules.)
Washington, D.C.:
Does Wolf Trap ever cancel for inclement weather?
The Going Out Gurus: Wolf Trap's Filene Center never cancels performances due to inclement weather. If it rains and keeps on raining, the show goes on. I, Kate, just called the box office to doublecheck. Those with lawn seats always "take a chance." The good news is this: if erformers like you when you applaud, they love you when it rains. It poured two years ago during an Elvis Costello concert and he made no secret of playing louded, longer for the soaked.
Washington, D.C.:
I saw on MTV2 that the Roots are playing in D.C. for $2 on July 2 but I can't seem to find out where. Do ya'll know?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC, this is Joe and we're trying to track this rumor down. Would be great if true, but no confirmations so far. And there's no mention of what city the Roots will be playing on the MTV2 site. Hopefully, we'll know more next week.
Folk Life Festival, USA:
Has anyone been to the Folk Life Festival before? Opinions? I was invited to go on July 5th. I'm on a tight budget, so I will be able to have fun without spending a lot?
Thanks gurus!
The Going Out Gurus: FLF, USA, the Folklife Festival is not only great fun, but free. So no worries for the more budget-conscious. Food and shopping are your only extras. You could always bring your own picnic and find a spot nearby.
This year's festival theme -- The Silk Road -- features more than 350 artists, performers and presenters from along the ancient trade route from Japan to Italy. I (Maura) think even those who've been to other Folklife Festivals in the past are going to be wowed by this one. Check out our July 5 schedule and see for yourself.
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.:
All-knowing gurus,
Since you have the answers to all queries, riddle me this riddle me that--what up with Tom Tom on 18th? It's been closed forever, but it looked half-open the other evening. Also, any word on the new places going up on 18th (the one next to Reef, then across the street)? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, AM. This is Fritz. Here's what I've gotten out of the nice folks at Tom Tom: It's opening later this summer. It's almost done, they're just working on the interior. The format will be similar to the old Tom Tom -- they're not turning it into an upscale lounge or anything like that. They'll have DJs. That's it.
As for the other two: Guantanamera, next to the Reef, is a new spot from the original creator of Habana Village. Kate's writing it up for us, and discovered that it's not open early in the week. As for other (the former Showboat?), my calls haven't been returned. I suppose we'll see when it opens.
College Park, MD:
Hey guys! My roommate wants to go to a real 50's-themed diner with costumes and stuff (like in _Pulp Fiction_, not so much like Silver Diner). Do you guys know of one in the DC/MD area? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) know of plenty of diners but none that are like Jack Rabbit Slim's with costumes, etc. Anyone else?
Boating on the Potomac:
Hi Gurus, was hoping you could help me out. Do you know how the boat tie-ups at the Georgetown waterfront work? I've got a jet ski and was wondering if I can just pull up and tie off and chill out at Tony and Joes, etc., or if there are rules/regs. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, BotP. This is Fritz -- not sure about Jet Skis, but I've been told by the people at Riverside Grille and Tony and Joe's that you can just tie up on the dock and have a drink. No reservations required. Just remember that drinking and sailing (or skiing) don't mix.
Your Hatted Chatter:
Re: Aida
I saw it in Pittsburgh in February with my husband's family (seven people total), and no one in our party liked it that much. The singing wasn't as good as you would expect from a musical. The songs didn't fit into the story line. And Egypt lost its elegance when Disney decided to portray it. So, as you can tell, I wouldn't recommend it.
The Going Out Gurus: More on "Aida," thanks. So far, no raves.
Springfield, Va.:
What kind of dress code should I expect if I go up to Twilight? Something strict like 18th Street Lounge or something along the lines like most of Adams Morgans bars?
Thanks guys.
The Going Out Gurus: One of the many beautiful things about Twilight, Springfield, is that there's no dress code. Others include the great DJs, exceptional view, free food, no 21-and-over limits...
Virginia Fiancee and Friend:
GOGs,
Try this one on for size: My fiancee is planning on going out with a single female friend of ours this Saturday. The friend is a cool chick, but pretty shy, and doesn't get into the bar scene looking for guys too often. However, with help from my fiancee she's going to "get out there" this weekend. Can you recommend a place where my friend can meet and greet, but my fiancee won't get pawwed, despite the huge rock on her finger? In other words, can you suggest a classy pick-up joint for two professional women in their mid-20's? Cheesy dance clubs just won't do. Neither will snotty Euro-bars. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: OK, Virginia, this is Joe. Let's see if we've got this right, you're looking for a classy pick-up place to send your fiancee to? Can anyone help this guy?
The Roots? 9:30 maybe?:
I heard about the Roots coming to town, too. It may just be a rumor but I assumed it would 9:30 since they've played there so much before. I looked on their Web site and the club is mysteriously unbooked for July 2nd. Maybe?
The Going Out Gurus: Well, that'd be the obvious place, but we don't have any confirmation so it's best just to wait and see.
Washington, D.C.:
My poor little apartment offers me nowhere to BBQ. Where's the best place to go (D.C. preferably) to cook out? Do they have grills at Fletcher's Boathouse or Hains Point? I imagine that most area BBQ spots are in state/local/national parks -- so is drinking a no-no? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, DC. I (Anne) know the feeling, the wish for outdoor space. You're right on to take advantage of all the parks around. Fletcher's Boathouse has grills you can use for free, and if you're low on soda, hotdogs or chips, you can always get some extra at the snackbar there. Hains Point has picnic tables but not grills; you'd need to bring your own. At Hains Point, you also need to make a (free) reservation with the Park Service permitting office (202/619-7225) if you're grilling on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day. I've also reserved a spot in Rock Creek Park -- it's $5 for either daytime to 4 or 4 p.m. to dark. And yes, at any national/state/local park, alcohol is not allowed. But do should bring your own charcoal and something to clean the grill.
Washington, D.C.:
Hey y'all, love the chat. My friend is trying to plan a bar-hopping outing on Capitol Hill tomorrow night. As we haven't spent much time over there, what are your picks? We're single, late 20s, and don't work in Congress. Looking for places to just have a drink and see some new faces. She is particularly interesting in finding a pool table.
Second question (I know, I'm probably cheating): Just how early do we need to be at Lucky Bar for the U.S.-Germany game tomorrow morning? I've been watching from home so far, but I have heard things have been getting crowded.
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Second part first: Lucky's doors open at 7. The line starts well before then. Arrive early. I've heard of people arriving at 6 and not being the first in.
As for the Hill -- you could do a pool-table hopping bar crawl. Start at Capitol Lounge for 20-somethings and pool action in the basement, move on to places like the black-lit tables and Mai Tais at Politiki, the crowded table at Hawk and Dove, and (my favorite) the tables at Zack's, the Hill's best dive bar. How's that for a start?
The Going Out Gurus:
Roots update: Ok, we've just confirmed that the Roots are playing the 9:30 on July 2. Tickets are $2 and go on sale this Saturday at 10 a.m. at the 9:30 box office. There's a 2 ticket limit per person.
Washington, D.C.:
Hi Gurus,
Love the chat! Looking to organize post-work drink outing for a friend's birthday. Need to stay in Dupont area and want something roomy so folks can just drop by and mingle. Buffalo Billiards and the Big Hunt naturally come to mind, but I'm tired of them. Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: This is Kate. What you think about calling the Iron Gate Inn to see what they can offer -- a table for ten, some drinks and some apps. could be arranged. It's always easier if you're looking just to spend "happy hour" there and free up the table for diners. The Iron Gate has DJs Thursdays through Saturday, this is a relatively new gig, so they might really welcome a larger party. I'd also recommend Eighteenth Street Lounge, it always feels glamorous but not so much more expensive than the Big Hunt. And just a block away on 19th Street, the Georgetown Seafood Grill has awfully good happy hour specials at the bar area -- oyster and schrump, etc.
Rockville, Md.:
Looking for free and cheap ideas for shows, concerts and events, such as the Shakespeare Theater's recent stint at the Carter Baron. It's so expensive to try and see too much at Wolf Trap and other venues.
Thanks!
(And thanks to the earlier submitter for the tip on the National Theater's movie series!)
The Going Out Gurus: Another free show, though it only lasts this weekend, is Signature's "The Rink," which is being performed at Lubber Run Amphitheater and was reviewed in today's Style. Olney Theatre usually presents a free Summer Shakespeare Festival in July, but I haven't heard specifics yet. (Check back to the e-guide, as I (Jen) will post information as soon as I get it.) And if you want more free movies, there's always Screen on the Green and the NIH Movie Fest to look forward to.
Washington, D.C.:
Last week I went by the Rouge to have a quick drink. Little did I expect, but the place was crazy busy, especially since lately it has been relatively quiet. Is there something going on that I should be aware of, considering its a great place when its not packed?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) have found the scene at Rouge to be really hit-or-miss, except for Fridays and Saturdays. Some days it's packed at happy hour, others are filled with hotel guests and I have no problem finding a seat. I know (bartender) Leianne is planning to start a art night or two, but that shouldn't make the place crazy.
Lucky Bar:
For tomorrow morning, I'd be worried if I got there any later than 6:30 a.m. I got there at 6:45 for the Poland game and got in fine, but the bigger the game, the bigger the crowd. Good luck!
The Going Out Gurus: Word.
Leguizamo Drama Boy:
OK, not to be contentious but I have to disagree with the guy who posted about his bad experience with Leguizamo at the Warner. First of all, the Warner's voice mail DID say the discount ticket limit was two per person. I heard it myself. Secondly, my friend and I arrived at 11 a.m. and were seventh in line. So I am guessing that this guy arrived closer to noon (not 9:30) if he was 15th.
I found the Warner staff very helpful, they passed out seating charts at 12:30 so we could all select our seats, and they got things moving promptly at 1:00, which was when they had announced that the cheap seats would go on sale.
And John was awesome! Aye caramba.
The Going Out Gurus: Another opinion on the Warner Theatre front row seat-distribution situation. Glad someone had a good experience with it since it's such a nice idea.
Art for art's sake:
I'm new in town. I love art galleries but I'm tired of going to the National Gallery. Where else can I go?
The Going Out Gurus: AFAS, Maura here. It's not easy to exhaust the NGA, but -- as you seem to know -- there's a lot more to see. Check out our listing of Smithsonian and other District museums to find what's up your alley. Art Night on the Mall is a great way to socialize and see some of the best museums have to offer. If you want to get into some private galleries, try out Georgetown's third Fridays, 7th Street's Third Thursdays and Dupont's First Fridays. The Phillips and Corcoran -- D.C.'s most popular off-the-Mall museums -- also have extended evening hours. Enjoy.
Washington, D.C.:
My friend's sister from Brazil is visiting. She's 20 and we want to show her the D.C. club scene. Which clubs are currently 18 and over on Saturday nights? Also, which salsa clubs allow under 21? Or, which ones are not strict about checking IDs at the door during the week? (NOTE: She doesn't drink.)
The Going Out Gurus: Under 21 and looking for Latin dancing... ouch. Give this a good once over first. You won't find specific latin clubs on this list but some of the big clubs have floors that play latin music. My next suggestion would be to call Bravo Bravo. I used to go there in college and I had no fake ID. Current salsa dancers I know say that the younger crowd still heads there. - Rhome
Fairfax, Va.:
Oh great Gurus,
What is your opinion of the dinner/dancing cruises on the Potomac? Overrated? Or are they worth it? I am thinking of surprising my boyfriend with a trip on one since he loves boats so much and is new to the D.C. area. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I (Alexa) haven't heard great things, but let's ask the group.
Silver Spring, Md.:
I'm an 'ol guy with an AARP card, but still young enough to hear "Last Call" and a final set of music in Adams-Morgan a couple times a week. I still can't find a place to catch some foot-stompin' Dixieland downtown. Other than the place near Catholic University on Tuesday nights. Where is there to go? Down south? Back to New York, Chicago or San Francisco? I ain't dead yet, and my toe won't stop tappin'.
The Going Out Gurus: A few ideas, Silver Spring: Besides the excellent Federal Jazz Commission at Col. Brooks' Tavern, you might want to catch Mike Flahrety's Dixieland Direct at the Market Inn in Southeast every Sunday (they're a big hit with Eric Brace). If you want to drive, I (Fritz) love Swing Street at the Last Chance Saloon in Columbia. They perform every Sunday night, and swtich weekly between '30s big band jazz and hot dixieland. I think they're worth the trip.
Washington, D.C.:
I know this is more of a Tom Sietsema question, but here you are: I had a dinner planned for a party of five, including family from out of town, at Cashions. However, our party of five has now become a party of nine, which seems a little much for little Cashions -- any suggestions in the Dupont/Adams Morgan area for a larger crowd, entrees 15-23ish range?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi D.C. Kate here. This is my neighborhood so I have some suggestions for you. If you've got picky eaters (aka red sauce = Italian) consider San Marco (Adams Morgan) or Fuzio (Dupont). If you're hosting diners game for a good meal that might involve trying something new, consider Lavante (Dupont) or Lebanese Taverna (Woodley).
My choice would be Petits Plats. They offer an enviable three-course dinner special that ends at 7, (sneaky tip: call ahead and see if you can get them to extend it as long as you agree that your group will order from the specials). They have wines by the glass -- including a petal-pretty rose -- and are located at the top of Woodley Park's Metro. Ask to sit in the pretty diningroom on the second floor
College Park, Md.:
I have been thinking that visiting a planetarium would be a fun summer date, but I have no idea where one is in the area or what its hours would be. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Amy
The Going Out Gurus: Hi ya, Amy. How about a whole list of area planetariums? I (Maura) think the experience will vary at each. Some are geared towards more mellow stargazing, while shows like "Infinity Express" at Air and Space's Albert Einstein Planetarium really pack a punch.
Montgomery Village, Md.:
Our Friday happy hours often turn into a REALLY happy seven or eight hours. Can you suggest some places to do this in a. Montgomery County, b. Adams Morgan and c. Downtown D.C.
I'm thinking on the inexpensive side with at least one TV and nice waitresses/bartenders to flirt with. The less dressy scene is more our style but we can fit in anywhere and everybody loves us. An outdoor setting would be nice.
I love this chat, by the way.
Thanks so much!
The Going Out Gurus: Here you go, MV:
a. Uncle Jed's Roadhouse in Bethesda, Mrs. O'Leary's in Gaithersburg.
b. Adams Mill Bar and Grill, Toldeo Lounge, Millie and Al's.
c. Stoney's, Tequilla Grill, Zack's, the Fox and Hounds.
Cheers.
South American music:
Check out Cecilia's on Columbia Pike in Arlington. Might be what you're looking for.
The Going Out Gurus: Cecilia's is one of the salsa clubs in the area. Period.
Georgetown, Washington, D.C.:
Hey folks. (Love the chats) Can you recommend any good 4th of July fireworks viewing spots in D.C. that are not on the Mall?
The Going Out Gurus: Can do, G-town. Have you seen our Fourth of July guide? We have a clickable map of great places to watch the downtown fireworks, most of them off the Mall. Just this week, I (Anne) stopped by Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Anacostia. It's so high up, you're looking straight across to Virginia, with river and the Washington Monument in the center -- a beautiful view.
Re: Under 21 club/bar list:
Wow! What a wonderful resource! Thanks for putting this together. I'm passing it on to my 19 year old sister and all her little friends. Watch out D.C., here they come!
The Going Out Gurus: Glad you enjoy it. The next edition (out soon, as it's continually updated) will also include the Intern Social Club and a few new nights. Stay tuned...
Vienna, Va.:
Are you guys going to compile a July 4 list (or have you already) for things to do around the area? I know the fireworks on the Mall but after last night's news report about increased security and designated entrance/exit points -- I'd just as soon watch on TV and avoid the craziness of the crowds. But what about any other goings-ons around the area?
Thanks. Rock on!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Vienna, please see the introduction to this discussion. I believe it has what you need.
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.:
RFK? Fritz you are such a trusting person. As a DCU season ticket holder, I've personally experienced the pain of being the red headed (sorry!) step-child of the D.C. Sports Commission. Do you really think they are going to pull this off? Good luck with all that. I'll be at the Diner in my drowsy bear jammies and big fuzzy slippers first watching the Engerlund game and then the U.S. game (we gotta get that team a nickname). Cheers
The Going Out Gurus: Well, you know... if it stinks, I'll try to get back to the Lounge. Or go home and watch it from the comfort of my couch, German beer in hand.
Bethesda, Md.:
Hey Gang!
So this isn't necessarily a normal, "what bar has a juke box" kind of questions, but.
Ever since I've moved here, I've been looking for a good Roman Catholic church. One that has a young-ish vibe to it, maybe some good music? Any suggestions would be awesome!
Thanks gurus!
Have a great weekend!
The Going Out Gurus: This is Maura, "Bethesda." I fear you may be my mother throwing me a test question, but I'll give you a straight answer anyway. Try Holy Trinity Church in Georgetown. From what I hear, they draw a young crowd and I don't think you need to be a nearby resident to attend. Anyone out there care to testify?
Washington, D.C.:
Man, does The Post own stock in Summers or what? How come you guys haven't been down to Lucky Bar to watch the USA? Lots of supporters and the place has been rockin' every game! Check it out!
The Going Out Gurus: Well, they are staying open 24/7 to show the games, and it's one of the most crowded spots in town. Summers even got mentioned on ESPN. And we have done videos from the Diner and Lucky Bar, for what it's worth. I hear we'll be doing something from RFK.
Drinking and grilling:
I have seen a ton of people drinking at Rock Creek Park. It seems to me as long as you are sort of discrete about it you could get away with BBQing with some beer. However, I am not sure what the penalty is if you get caught. If you are over 21, how bad can it be?
The Going Out Gurus: It's a fine, and since it's national property, Fritz and I (Anne) are guessing it's hefty. We can get back to you with details next week. Readers, any experiences to share?
Cubicle, Hell:
I'm tired of not being able to see trees! Need to get outside this weekend. Which is the best white-water rafting or tubing place near DC? By best, I guess I mean cost plus distance plus
experience. Thanks Class!
The Going Out Gurus: Class, what say you? We know Kate's a fan of Butt's Tubes.
Washington, DC, 20036:
Three friends are coming into town this Saturday
from Baltimore for one of the girl's 30th birthday.
They always end up at the same old places in
D.C. -- Lucky Bar, Black Cat, sometimes 18th St.
Lounge if we have the cash, etc. Any ideas of
where I can take them that will be fun, different,
and easy on our collective wallets? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Are you planning on hopping around or settling in at one spot? If you plan on being mobile, try heading to hot areas of town (like Adams Morgan) and just poking your head into places that you usually don't go to. See some interesting people? Go in! Hear some tunes you like? Go in! Have you tried Toka, Rumba Cafe, Bukom, Pharmacy Bar, Chi Cha Lounge, Erico, Reef, Ortanique? This Saturday will be a good time to start. - Rhome
Potomac Cruise:
I've been on the Dandy cruise and the Spirit of Washington. The crowd tends to be older (I'm 26) and rather formal. The food is pretty good. But it does get boring after awhile. I haven't tried the midnight cruise party yet. That ought to be more fun.
The Going Out Gurus: We catch your drift.
Washington, D.C.:
Do you know anything about the Dance for Life Gala this weekend? I'm in the mood to dress up -- and I saw the listing in the Washingtonian, it says dinner, dancing and silent auction for $65 which seems pretty reasonable to me. Question is: Is this geared toward singles or do I need to bring a date or what?
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here. I didn't know anything about this, but I spoke with the president of the organization and here you go: "Dance for Life" is a (dressy) benefit for a national nonprofit that provides support to people waiting for organ transplants. The help most often arrives in the form of emotional support delivered by transplant recipients. The evening is intended to raise funds for this network. Admission is indeed $65 and includes dinner and dancing and a silent auction (including items from Cartier and the Redskins, folk art, jewelry and my favorite: delivery of 100 live roses from Israel). The events take place at 7 p.m., this Saturday at the Hilton Washington & Towers, call 202/248-9111 for details.
Trapped in A Tysons Cubicle:
I'm dreaming of my days backpacking in Europe and where I discovered the lemon/lime wine coolerish drink called "Hooch". Any ideas on where to find one around here?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Tysons. This is Fritz. I was at school in England when Hooch and the rest of the Alcopops (like Two Dogs) were all the rage, but I really haven't seen Hooch around here -- there are all those "hard" lemonades floating around, but they aren't the same.
Anyone know where to find/drink Hooch?
For Used Books:
Try Capitol Hill books on C Street SE right near Eastern Market. It's a wonderfully quiet dusty old used bookstore, and the man who runs it is great -- he knows his stuff and is always willing to cut you a deal on an armful of books.
The Going Out Gurus: Good tip, FUB.
Washington, D.C.:
What are the approximate times of third Thursdays? It sounds very cool and I just want to make sure I don't show up too late! Thanks a ton.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. Third Thursdays usually start at 6 p.m. Some galleries may stay open until 9, but I (Maura) believe many will close by 8 p.m. Some extra good news: Wine will be served now that the Alcohol Board backed down from its recent fuss. Cheers.
Fiancee and Friend:
Hate to say it, but the 18th Street Lounge probably wouldn't be a bad bet. Only slightly snotty, and if she's not getting enough action they can always walk over to Rumor's. If she can't succeed there, she's not trying.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for this.
Herndon, Va.:
I'm new to D.C. and looking for places to hang out with friends on the weekend. What are good clubs and lounges that cater to the under-21 crowd?
The Going Out Gurus: There really aren't any lounges that cater to an under 21 crowd, Herndon. Here's the list of Where to Go if You're Under 21. You can now get into the VIP club on Sundays (it's their newly announced "College Night"), but even the hotel bars are cracking down; I (Fritz) got carded at Rouge on a Friday night.
Thanks a zillion!:
You guys rock! I was just about to post a plaintive request for info on Screen on the Green, and there, the question at the bottom of the chat had a link!
(The site didn't have this year's schedule up.)
Keep up the great work!
The Going Out Gurus: Aw shucks. If you liked that, check this.
Hill Hooch:
I bought some recently at Total Beverage. Not exactly a bar, but still.
The Going Out Gurus: Ta very much, HH.
Washington, DC:
Is Screen on the Green happening this year?
The Going Out Gurus: This is for both of you DC questioners: yep, Screen on the Green starts July 15 with "On the Town." You can find more outdoor movies on our Summer Movie Guide.
Washington, D.C.:
RFK is definitely the place to be tomorrow -- a TV screen outdoors on the longest day of the year. Wonder how that one is going to work. And my vote for the U.S. team nickname is "The Great Satans."
The Going Out Gurus: That's my (Fritz's) favorite choice as well.
Re: Leguizamo Drama Boy:
I was there on the 14th, thank you, and the Warner staff being very helpful to you on the 15th was probably in response to the disappointment they encountered from us the day before (you are welcome). They also had twice as many tickets to give out on Saturday since there were two shows.
The Going Out Gurus: All right, you both had different experiences. It's unfortunate, but let's not argue about it. As Mr. Leguizamo himself said in the fine film "Moulin Rouge": "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return."
Logan Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Fritz! You aren't -- -gasp- going to be cheering for the Germans with that German beer im Faust are you?
The Going Out Gurus: What do you expect from a guy named Fritz?
Arlington, Va.:
If you want a rockin' Catholic church, try St. Cyprian (not sure of spelling), located east of the Capitol. The mass goes for about two hours, but it has awesome music and a great congregation.
Holy Trinity is good as well.
The Going Out Gurus: Amen to that.
Washington, D.C.:
Hey, is the on-line poll still going on? If so, can you provide a link? I wanna get my vote in. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Too late, m'dear but the results will be with you before you know it!
Washington, D.C.:
Dinner cruises on the Potomac are very cheesy. Don't bother.
By the way, gurus, how is Hotel Washington these days?
The Going Out Gurus: Same as always: crowded, expensive, filled with tourists.
To Virginia fiancee:
I like bars in the Clarendon area. I think the crowds there are yuppie and not over-pushy. Ones that I've been to are Guarapo's, Rhodeside Grill, Clarendon grill, etc. It didn't seem like a meat-market to me.
The Going Out Gurus: There you go, V.F.
Arlington, Va.:
Hooch? I don't think I've seen it in a bar, but it's in most every grocery store that I've been in. Assuming we're talking about the same nasty lemony sorta-beer that is.
The Going Out Gurus: It's not sorta-beer, Arlington. It's like one of them Malternative things. And it is nasty.
Alexandria, Va.:
Any sports leagues in the area that do not require you to sign up as a team? I'm still new to the area, hoping to meet some new folks, and keep running into the same "Gotta sign up as a team" thing. All my coworkers are slugs, help!?
The Going Out Gurus: Anne here. What kinds of sports are you looking for, Alexandria? Leagues like soccer probably require a team. You might try to find a class or a club, where individuals are welcome. For example, the Washington Area Frisbee Club seems open to individuals, I think.
The Going Out Gurus:
Who mentioned Holy Comforter St. Cyprian? I used to sing in that choir as a youth. We did indeed catch the holy ghost up in there on a regular basis. A very welcoming church indeed, it's located at 16th and E. Capitol SE. - Rhome
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Hi --
I was wondering if you guys know what's going into the East corner of Connecticut and Florida. It's had those bad posters on it for months so I'm hoping they open up something soon.
Thanks and have a great weekend!
The Going Out Gurus: Not a clue, D.C. but I'll try peaking around the billboards (or asking Marla at Blue Mercury).
Bethesda, Md.:
I live a very sheltered Bethesda life and venture out into the city on occasion but tomorrow night, I've promised my friend in Virginia that I would go out in Clarendon with him. Could you tell me if there are any chill loungy places where we can go?
The Going Out Gurus: How about the huge rooftop deck at Clarendon Grill? Gua-Rapo in Courthouse? And if you want chill, I (Fritz) am very partial to Jay's Saloon.
Arlington, Va.:
Hey Gurus,
I'm looking for a place to take my girlfriend on a day hike that is local. I know there are some nice trails around Great Falls, but I've heard they can be pretty busy. Do you guys know of some place a little more off the beaten path?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Many parks have tiny trails that even though other folks are nearby, they're not necesarily on your same path. Even Rock Creek Park has fun winding trails on either side of Rock Creek. I (Anne) always like Catoctin Mountain Park, too.
Futbol:
Sorry this is so late, but do you know if anyplace is going to televise the Univision broadcast of the U.S.-Germany game? Nothing against ESPN, but the commentators on Univision are just so much fun! Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) am secretly praying they're showing it at RFK, but I doubt it. Anyone want to nominate their favorite Spanish-language bar?
Bethesda, Md.:
Having recently been laid off, I suddenly find myself with lots of free time during the work week. It's not all bad, since my wife the summer off from grad school. What would you recommend for some great, fun things for two mid twenty year olds to do that you can only do in the summer, and only during the day of a normal work week?
The Going Out Gurus: To the Mall, my friend. First rate air conditioning and art. Also, Library of Congress and many bike trails too. Call Fletcher's Boat House and take advantage of free canoe night. Hope something turns up, Bethesda.
Dupont, Washington, D.C.:
Hiya, Gurus.
I have a friend coming into town in mid-July and thought I'd take her to that way-cool-sounding Egypt exhibit at the National Gallery. I know it's not open yet, but can you guage what the chances will be for two people to just walk in off the street on a Saturday afternoon? Should/can I get tickets beforehand? (Standing in line for them that morning, by the way, won't be possible.) Or is it going to be like the Van Gogh exhibit that I never got to see because I work during the week and both times I got up really early on the weekend to stand in line I still didn't get tickets?
If you're thinking there's no way we'll get in, do you have any other suggestions that even approach the way-coolness of the Egypt artifacts?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Dupont. I (Maura) just got off the line with the National Gallery and there will be passes for the Egypt show opening June 30. Same day passes will be available at the gallery. They're timed on the half hour and you may - whether you want to or not - end up with a timed pass for later that day. Advanced tickets will be available through Ticketmaster, although I don't think they are on sale just yet. We'll post more information as soon as we know.
I think you'll get in, just arrive early and be prepared to stand in line and come back later (or pay those darned fees at Ticketmaster). If you do stand in line, at least it isn't as cold out as it was during Vermeer!
Falls Church, Va:
Before it closed last fall, Julios was a great roof-top hangout overlooking U St. where one could sip pitchers of beer and eat average bar food. So what's up with the new place to be opened in its place? Any details on it would be appreciated - thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Falls Church. This is Fritz. It's no longer going to be pitchers and pizza at Julio's. The space has been purchased by the owners of the Eighteenth Street Lounge, and they're going to be opening a lounge/organic restaurant called Local 16. It'll be open later this year, I'm told.
Alexandria, Va.:
Hi Gurus --
I'm new to the boating scene on the Potomac and was wondering if you have any information on tying up to the Georgetown Waterfront in front of Tony & Joe's/Sequoia's, etc. Is anyone allowed to tie off there or are there rules/regs? Thanks for the help!
The Going Out Gurus: 'Fraid not, Alexandria. Thompson's Boathouse nearby is a Park Service dock, and they only allow boats that are rented there to tie up there. Motorboats are never allowed to come into that dock.
Lines at the Reef:
I was hoping to host a college alumni happy hour at the Reef -- would it be WAY too crowded at 7 p.m. on a Thursday night? When do the lines start forming (me thinks 9ish?) to get in? Is the roof deck open yet?
The Going Out Gurus: Hmmmmm. The roof's not open, and I (Fritz) think the lines start a bit after 7 - maybe 8-ish? - but if everyone doesn't show up early, you might have a smaller happy hour than you planned on. The roof deck is opening next week, and from then on, I think the place will be slammed at all hours on weekends.
Two Birthdays:
Hi everyone,
My birthday and my sister-in-law's birthday are both this weekend. Our husbands have offered to take us out for drinks on Friday night and they want to go to Old Town. I haven't been in a while and don't really want to do the Fish Market thing. Where is a good, fun place to go for drinks and maybe some appetizers after 8:30? I was thinking maybe Kingfish or Cafe Salsa, are there any other suggestions? Any places with great music or any places that won't be annoyed if we don't order an entire dinner? We kind of want to avoid the whole frat party sort of scene since we're in our 30s so a lot of the more popular places like Union Street/South Austin Grill are out.
Thanks so much for any help you can give and have a great weekend!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, TB. I (Fritz) recently did the late-night Alexandria scene for an upcoming story, and I went to the two places you mentioned, plus Las Tapas. I'd actually recommend that, as they have live Gypsy music on weekends, and you can sit at the bar, share a pitcher of sangria and tapas, and just listen. Cafe Salsa is fun and loud, and Kingfish's bar is often crowded -- it's small -- and the drinks are decent, as long as you avoid the nasty Mojitos.
The Going Out Gurus:
Well folks, we've got a wedding to go to. Must dash.
