| Got Plans? With the Entertainment Guide Staff washingtonpost.com Thursday, June 13, 2002; 1 p.m. EDT Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service. Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours. Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide. Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion. Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions. The Going Out Gurus: Buckle your seatbelts, G-fans. This is Kate and I'll be your host. Think of me as your doorman -- the better you tip, the faster you get in. Maura, Jen, Fritz, Joe, Anne, Alexa, Rhome and I are all here, fingers at the ready. We've got lots of questions already, several about camping this weekend. Perhaps it's time to make alternate plans. I hope it clears up in time for Elvis Costello on Sunday night. Alright, who's lucky number one?
Wash DC: The Post briefly mentioned today that the DC ESPNZone is hosting a US Soccer Federation fundraiser Friday morning for people to watch the US vs Poland match. Can you give any more details about price, what's for breakfast, and whether it's open to the public? When do doors open? The Going Out Gurus: Hey Wash. This is Fritz. The World Cup Breakfast tomorrow at ESPN Zone is open to the public and sounds like a good time – players from D.C. United and the Freedom, a full breakfast, a silent auction and soccer on more than 100 screens. If only the tickets didn’t range from $100-500, I might be willing to go. They do (or did) have some $50 tickets available, but those were almost gone last week. I couldn’t get through to the ticket office this morning (it’s 800/925-4078 for anyone interested). Thankfully, all proceeds benefit the U.S. Soccer Federation’s local initiatives, which include scholarships, building inner city pitches, etc. Doors open at 7 and the even goes until 10.
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Fritz, while I hate to bring this up with 90 minutes still to go, but a few weeks back I said I'd buy you a drink when the U.S. advances to the second round. I'm guest bartending for Cocktail Charities next Thursday (June 20) so stop by Bedrock and get your drink. And you won't even have to tip. Allez les bleus alright...right home! God I love World Cup. The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Adams Morgan. I'm a regular at Cocktail Charities events, and a member at Bedrock, so I'll be there, and I'll tip. Promise. And I'll hopefully be wearing my 1970 Pele shirt, as I am right now. (But I'm really pulling for Germany. Go figure.)
Silver Spring, Md.: Not sure if you've heard of the Heritage India Festival, but a bunch of my friends are getting together and heading out for some Indian food and live entertainment (No Bollywood dances!). The festival is being held this weekend at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, on both Saturday and Sunday from 11 to 7. Visit hifestival.com for details. The Going Out Gurus: Hey SS, yep, we've heard of the Heritage India Festival. I (Anne) am right with you on the food. Yum! And how about the Rajasthani dancers?
Arlington, Va.: Two questions: Do you know if there are going to be any events in town associated with the big Egyptian show that's coming to the National Gallery of Art? Like maybe a reception or some kind of talk at the Smithsonian? I studied ancient Egypt in college and would sort of like to meet/view from a distance Betsy Brian (the guest curator of the exhibit) or other Egyptology types. Also, do you know of any really cheap ways to get to New York City from D.C. (other than driving)? There was an article about this in the Travel section a few weeks ago, but unfortunately I didn't keep it. (I know this isn't really your subject but thought you might have heard something.) The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington. Maura here. The Smithsonian Associates are hosting a mini-course in honor of the National Gallery's The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt,". The exhibition opens June 30 and the course, beginning July 10, includes an overview by none other than Betsy Bryan and a lecture by James Allen, the Met's Egyptian art curator. The National Gallery doesn't list any lectures yet, but they're sure to have a few. We'll keep you posted. As for New York, Travel did feature a really cheap ticket -- $10 for an overnight ride. If you prefer travelling at more reasonable hours, check out Peter Pan. I admit I have yet to brave the bus, but for about $40 one way Kate and Anne both gave it a thumbs up.
Arlington, Va.: I usually tune into your chats faithfully every Thursday, but this week a meeting prevented me. Anyway, I read through the chat on Friday, and I gotta say it was terrible! You guys are usually witty, patient with all the repetitive questions, and genuinely helpful. Not this week. Were you all asleep? Losing interest in your jobs? It seemed that the audience had more suggestions and advice than the "Gurus." What gives? The Going Out Gurus: Hmm. This is Joe and we're glad to see that our boss is submitting to the chat this week. We give and give and give and this is the thanks we get. Actually, I think we were a little tired last week. The World Cup is draining our sleep.
Philly, Pa.: Hi Gurus, I'm coming down for a bachelorette party Friday night and wanted to know what bars or clubs in D.C. would be the best place to find willing males to put on lipstick and kiss/sign my friend's T-shirt. I've heard Heaven and Hell in Adam's Morgan is the place to go. What do you y'all think and do you have any other suggestions? Oh, and we're also thinking about going to the John Leguziamo show. So if you have any opinions on that I'd appreciate it as well. Thanks so much guys! The Going Out Gurus: Hey there, Philly. I (Jen) point you to our recently updated bachelorette feature, which is chock full of suggestions. (Sounds like you ladies might want to hit the Rumors/Lulu's/Polly Esther's track.) Re: Leguizamo, I haven't heard specific reviews of his D.C. performances, but I know his shows generally are very entertaining. If you decide to go, check our Ticketplace link; they've been selling half-price seats to "Sexaholix" throughout the week. Also, $16.50 front row seats are sold for each day's performance at the Warner box office; call 202/783-4000 to get the 411.
Alexandria, Va.: Does anyone know a bar that has a mechanical bull? The Going Out Gurus: You again?
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Have you hugged your horse today? Kate talked about polo near the Mall a couple of weeks ago. Wondering has the season started, what's the location, is there a schedule and do they have wine/food for sale. Thanks. The Going Out Gurus: Hi Dupont, this is Kate. Yes, I believe the season has started on the polo field directly adjacent to the Lincoln Memorial. To find it, park near the Lincoln Memorial and walk toward the F.D.R. monument. Or look for the horses, either one will do. There is neither food nor drink for sale, and wine is strictly prohibited. Pack a picnic and head down on Saturday afternoons or immediately afterwork (5:30-ish)on Wednesdays.
world cup: We want to check out the US vs Poland game tomorrow morning, but we're leary that Lucky Bar will be waaaaay too crowded. Are they open all night? Do other DC bars open at 7? Has anyone caught a game at Stetson's in the morning? I heard they are showing them. Suggestions welcome. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Hey, WC. This is Fritz. Yes, Lucky's packed. Friends who were supposed to meet us there for England-Argentina couldn't get in at 7:15 (doors open at 7). Some people have been lining up at 6:30 to try and get a table. Bars in Washington that will open early for the US match include Capitol Lounge, Fado, Lucky, Stetson's, the Diner (open 24/7) and Engle's Diner in Mount Pleasant. I haven't been to Stetson's yet, but I'm considering going tomorrow. Just remember that you can't get beer until 8. Here's our guide to Where to Watch the World Cup.
Ellicott City, Md.: Gurus! Hope your wisdom extends a little north of the city limits, I'm new in the area, always looking for a place with a little (not too much!) of character, and cheap enough to make it a regular stop. Greenbelt/Silver Spring/Ashton/Olney -- anywhere up there. I'm thinking Mike's (Annapolis) or Cheshire Crab (Pasadena) level of "character," although not necessarily seafood. The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have never been to Mike's or Cheshire Crab, but two character-laden spots that immediately come to mind are the Olney Ale House, right across from the Olney Theatre, and the Quarry House Tavern in downtown Silver Spring. The latter is an underground place on Georgia Ave. where a lot of friendly neighborhood types hang out. Have never eaten there myself, but I hear the food's pretty good, too. If you want seafood, you might also try (the original) Crisfield's, also in Silver Spring. Very, very old school in a charming way. Try those and let us know how you like 'em.
College Park, Md: I guess I'm a little older than the rest of the chatters, but where does the term "props" come from? Based on its use in these chats, I think it means something like congratulations or kudos. I also heard a World Cup commentator on ESPN say it. What is its origin? Is it short for anything? I'm sure it has nothing to do with the front row forwards in rugby. Clueless and curious in C.P. The Going Out Gurus: I don't mind being not only an entertainment resource but also an etymological one too. The term "props" is short for "propers" or proper respect. Your astute analysis of context clues have correctly lead you to "props" referring to kudos. I fear that my usefulness falls short in actually pinpointing where the usage of this term originates. - Rhome
Washington, D.C.: GOGs, my friend mentioned hearing about a bar crawl this weekend in D.C., but neither of us knows where or when. Any idea? The Going Out Gurus: Here's the link to more info on Saturday's bar crawl, Washington. I have to say, this is not the most well-promoted crawl I've ever seen, but all the usual suspects (Mackey's, Rumors, Bottom Line) are being featured, and apparently the discounts are on Miller products instead of Budweiser's.
New U: Beth Orton at the 9:30 Club Saturday. Has anyone seen her live? Her hits are all remixed by Chemical Brothers, Ben Watt, etc., but her solo stuff is more Joni Mitchell. How does it go down live? The Going Out Gurus: With a nice hot cup of sleepytime tea.
Red Line Chick: My boyfriend is working in Georgetown Saturday night, about 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. I've never been to Georgetown (and I have lived in D.C. for a year!), so we were thinking of hanging out down there before and after his job. But, can you suggest something I could do to entertain myself for two hours at night by myself in Georgetown? He'll be at some mall on Wisconsin or M Street (or maybe Wisconsin and M). My other friends live in the 'burbs and won't come into the city -- they make me drive to LORTON if I want to see them! The Going Out Gurus: Lorton? That's an outrage! This is Jen, and unfortunately, there is nothing at all to do in Georgetown between the hours of 9:30 and 11:30 p.m. on a Saturday, so I'm afraid you'll have to sit and twiddle your thumbs. I'm kidding, of course. There are a million ways to suck up two hours: For starters, try walking along M Street and visting some of the shops, like maybe Smash! or Urban Outfitters. You could spend two hours in those places alone. Boyfriend still not off work? Then have some ice cream at Thomas Sweet or Ben & Jerry's. Or, if the mood strikes you, grab a drink at any of Georgetown's many bars. Wow, that's a lot. In fact, I think I just spent two hours answering that question.
Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: I was just wondering if any of you gurus had seen the John Leguizamo show "Sexaholix," and if so, what you thought about it. I had heard it was a must-see. Oh yeah, LOVE the chat! The Going Out Gurus: As I (Jen) mentioned before, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Leguizamo. Can anyone else out there offer an opinion?
Rockville, MD: A friend is arriving in Washington with his wife and nine children, ages 3 to 20, next Wednesday, and are staying for five days. What to do, what to do? There's the zoo, the Mall museums, the Arboretum, Mount Vernon, etc. There's not much chance of making all the kids happy at one time, given their ages, but any other suggestions for making most of them happy? The Going Out Gurus: Hi Rockville. Eleven houseguests? Well, we'll help any way we can. I (Maura) say you can't go wrong at the Zoo. Kandala, the baby elephant, has taken to his pool and who can resist those pandas. Send any sullen teens up the street to Attack of the Clones at the Uptown (in my experience the movie is also good for those in need of a nap). Downtown, check out the new planetarium show and Space Station 3-D IMAX flick at Air and Space. Good luck.
I Am A Moron: Does Metro Cafe have a dress code? The Going Out Gurus: Don't be so hard on yourself. This is Joe and there's no dress code at Metro. Or I should say they've never kicked me out and I'm about the worst dresser there is.
Playing hooky from work!: Along with one of my best friends, I'm playing hooky from work next Friday. We can't decide what to do, though, with this glorious day off. We're willing to drive up to two and a half hours and don't want to spend tons of money. Here are some of the ideas we've come up with so far for our day trip: Play tourist in D.C. Hit Baltimore or Philly (via Amtrak). Visit a fruit farm. Go hiking somewhere. Any votes or more suggestions from you or the chatters? Thanks so much. The Going Out Gurus: Those all sound like swell ideas, PHFW. My only caution: Driving to and from Philly in one day can be tiring and slightly over your 2.5-hour limit. Here's some starters for your ideas on fruit orchards, hiking the Shenandoah and playing tourist in D.C. -- take a tour or learn some more about the city's presidential memorials. Check our Summer Guide too -- it rounds up lots of ways to savor a sunny day. This is Anne, channelling Maura's thoughts for don't-miss June exhibits. Chatters, what other recommendations do you have?
Bethesda, Md.: Have you guys heard anything about the new bar on Wisconsin Avenue called Saphyre? It looks a lot nicer than Candy Apple Red which used to be there but is empty every time I walk past. What's the deal? The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Bethesda. This is Fritz. I went to Saphire (no, that's not a typo) last week, and I think I need to go back before I write it up, although I'm not sure my friends will go with me. Like Candy Apple Red, it's got two sides -- one a restaurant, one a bar. The decor needs plenty of work, from the mismatched bar furnishing to the fake-leather chairs on wheels (!!!) at tables to the horrific plaid window treatments. The appetizers are good, though, (mostly seafood, like calimari and better-than-they-sound Crab Poppers) and the mixed drinks are well made. Happy hour is 20 percent off, which isn't much when you're paying $4.50 for a Pilsner Urquell. I do like the back patio, though. I've noticed the lack of customers, too. Maybe because it's new? Maybe it's just too far up Wisconsin from the usual Bethesda hangouts? Don't know, but I should have a full review up next week.
Gold Coast: I heard the Hives show tomorrow night is already sold out -- at the Black Cat? I've never heard of a show selling out pre-sale there -- any confirmation? The Going Out Gurus: Hello Gold Coast, this is Joe and the Hives show is sold out. Tickets for most Black Cat shows go on sale well ahead of the show date.
Chance of Rain: Where's a fun restaurant to be when it's raining? Any covered outdoor seating that might be nice in NW D.C.? The Going Out Gurus: Alexa here, Chance. When I last went to West 24, it was bucketing down and tho we didn't sit outside, I think we could have. Also moody during a shower is the cozy little patio -- more of a snug -- at Two-Nineteen in Old Town. Since rain is my favorite thing, I like this topic. Let's throw it out to the kids and see what comes back. Covered patios, folks. Who knows?
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: We're planning on going to the Shakespeare Free for All on Sunday since the next couple of days look like iffy weather. I know that Sunday is the last day of the event -- any predictions on whether this will make the crowds bigger or smaller? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: First of all, you should know that if there's a major downpour, lightning or inclement weather that makes the Carter Barron stage unsafe, that day's performance will be canceled. If there's a very light drizzle, though, the show will probably go on, and I (Jen) would imagine that may result in a smaller turn-out. But that's anybody's guess. If you really want to go on Sunday, give it a shot and hope for decent weather.
Bethesda, Md.: Hi GOGs -- Your chats make my week! Thank you for doing such a good job. I'm off to Stetson's tonight (near U Street and Chi Cha) for a happy hour. What's the scene like? I'm guessing it's pretty casual. What kind of people? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, Kate here. I like Stetson's, especially their no-rent patio a whole lot. It's a plain jane watering hole equally popular among the chino'd and jean'd, and it's really the spot for most of it's neighbors. Stetson's gets really crowded and noisy Thurs. through Sat. They aren't famous for happy hour specials during the week -- Sunday is the time to go: all drinks are $3.75 all day.
Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: Hi kids, Last night I was hanging in Dupont Circle when this drunk tourist came up to me and my friend and telling us all about the new Hotel Monaco that was being built in the Old Tariff building and this Spy Museum right across the way. Well we both felt a little bit silly because we had never heard of the spy museum! Ever heard of it? If so, what's it like? Worth the time and/or money to go check it out? I guess it depends if you're into spies (obviously). Keep up the great work! The Going Out Gurus: Hi Glover Park. Maura again. We are still waiting on the Spy Museum to open July 19 and we're pretty eager. The museum planned to open this month, but experienced construction delays. Admission is $11 for adults, $8 for kids. Let's hope it's worth it.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Okay, okay. I'm sorry I didn't follow up on karaoke bowling last week -- a girl's gotta work, you know. Anyhow. Saturday was to be our first stint at it. I couldn't go because I was sick, but the lowdown from the pals is that it's a real barrel of monkeys. It's held at Seminary Lanes, and I think the price isn't that much different than a regular bowling night, there's just a karaoke machine set up as well, with a not-too-terrible selection, apparently. (They said they sang Johnny Cash, among others.) Activity for this week? Girl talk in the Potomac -- in one-person sea kayaks rented for 10 bucks an hour somewhere on the waterfront. Now a question: I'm really not a soccer fan (or a morning person), but do you think it's worth it to go to the Lucky Bar at 7 a.m. on Saturday just for the experience of beer and eggs? The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Dupont. I (Fritz) will try to get right on that. Singing "Folsom Prison Blues" while rolling spares. Sounds like fun. And yes, going out to watch the US with a bunch of people is worth it. But, as we noted above, you'll have to arrive early -- hard if you're not a morning person -- and go without beer until at least 8, when everyone in the place will be surging towards the bar.
Baltimore, Md.: Beth Orton live is far from somnambulistic! She's a little goofy, especially when technical difficulties arise, but her songs have always had enough of a dancy nature to them to keep you on your toes. The Going Out Gurus: To each his drone.
Washington, D.C.: Ever so knowledgable GOG's -- Have you already reviewed or are you planning on reviewing Spank (the new upstairs part of 1223)? The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. This is Fritz. I reviewed Spank - wI ent right after it originally opened in May. But then they ran into licensing problems (had to do with their liquor license, I believe) and closed. They expected to reopen this week, and I've got calls in to see if that will happen, although the ads all say "Coming Soon."
Re: Chance of rain: Covered patios -- Italian Kitchen in Dupont and Peacock Cafe or Cafe Milano in Georgetown are good food/good scene. The Going Out Gurus: Some suggestions.
For Fritz: GERMANY? Could they be less passionless players? Only if they were Sweden. Big hulking surly aggressive jerks. Bah. The Going Out Gurus: Please don't make Fritz start singing "Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber Alles" in the office again.
Washington, D.C.: Re: Party Animals: Hate to tell you this, but you're wrong! Happily, a map is available at http://partyanimalsdc.org/gallery/sitesweb.shtml. I love the party animals! The Going Out Gurus: Yes, WDC. That link you mention is the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities' still incomplete list of sculptures' locations. You can find this link from our Party Animals profile.
Falls Church, Va.: I am hoping you can suggest a festive restaurant to celebrate a 40th birthday. Preferably, something around Falls Church, Arlington, Clarendon, etc. I am trying to think of someplace that's fun, not stuffy, that will not make the birthday girl feel, well, 40. (i.e., bars packed with nubile 20-somethings are OUT, as are staid, expensive restaurants with low lighting.) Alternatively, I'm trying to think of something fun that would involve some drinking where no expertise is required -- a place like Strikes in Bethesda that's a bit closer to home. No billiards though; that's been done recently. The group would be five women from early 30s to early 40s. Is this an impossible request? Thanks so much! The Going Out Gurus: Hi Falls Church and happy birthday. For restaurants, give Guajillo or Village Bistro a try. The latter is a little more reserved, but the fare is excellent. Alternatively, you could try some disco bowling, but I (Maura) can't promise the crowd won't skew young.
For Ellicott City: If you're willing to try downtown Silver Spring like the gurus were mentioning, I'd suggest the Half Moon Barbeque -- good food, and live local music from Tuesday thru Saturday. It's worth the trip! The Going Out Gurus: This is Kate, and I like your suggestion very much. Half Moon Bar-B-Que has pretty good 'que, warm atmosphere and live music. I like it on Wednesday nights, for some reason it's often folksier.
Del Ray, Va.: Okay, we're hosting some friends for England's World Cup match Saturday morning. Is there anything I can serve or do to make it the most fun for our British friend? The Going Out Gurus: Del Ray. Are you ready? This is Alexa and I am an expert. Here's what I would do. Go to Fresh Fields and buy a couple of pounds of bangers (granted these are the Irish version, but they do fine). Also pick up some big mushrooms, a few tomatoes, a soft loaf, a jar of Marmite, maybe a thick cut marmalade, some free range brown eggs, one of their big glass bottles of milk, and an inky black stout. And cook those boys a big fat fry-up. Want any more tips, just say.
Montgomery Village, Md.: What's up?! Is the Reef roof open yet? What's it like? The Going Out Gurus: Hey, MV. I (Fritz) was in last night before heading to poker night (major props to my boy Nathan), and was told that construction delays meant it would be another week to 10 days before the roof was ready. But wait 'til you see it -- a full beer selection, greenery and plenty of seating. It will be THE rooftop in D.C. before too long.
Vienna, Va.: In the past few months my friends seemingly have begun going to strip clubs on nearly a weekly basis. I refuse to be a part of that. Is that sort of activity becoming more mainstream (I hope not) or am I just noticing it more because those around me are engaging in it? The Going Out Gurus: You pose an interesting question Vienna. It's too bad we don't have an interesting answer. Clearly we need to do more research on this topic. Volunteers?
Silver Spring, Md.: Hi Going Out Gurus! Since my parents like to feel like they're getting more bite for their buck, I thought that a Father's Day brunch would be a good idea. Any recommendations for affordable places that won't be too crowded this Sunday? Thanks. The Going Out Gurus: Silver Spring, it's Alexa. Did you know there was a Father's Day bluegrass brunch at the State Theatre for $19.95. I bet it won't be crowded, and it might be a nice twist.
Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.: Dear GOGs, How could I plan for my week-ends without you? I have three questions for you: 1. Any party planned at the Metro Cafe or Black Cat this weekend? 2. At what time is Cake performing this Saturday? Do I have to arrive early to make sure I can enter/attend? 3. Do you know of any good bruch place in Silver Spring? Many thanks and have a good weekend. The Going Out Gurus: So many questions, Cleveland Park. Here come the answers: several DJs are spinning house and techno at the Black Cat on Friday and Saturday nights ($5 cover). Panic is on Fri. night at Metro Cafe as usual, and on Saturday, Metro's hosting Avalanche, a New Order dance party. Gates open for the Cake show at 4 p.m. and there are three bands scheduled before them; to play it safe, I (Jen) would try to get there no later than 5-ish, when the music begins. And I don't go out for brunch that much, so I'll throw out question number three to the crowd and see what comes back.
barf city usa: Alexa's food recommendation sounds like the nastiest funk ever. Girlfriend, check yourself into palate rehab. Bleck. Only make that for your friend if you want them to become an un-friend. eeewwwww The Going Out Gurus: And you are..?
washington, dc: Hi gurus! what is your favorite bar on a tuesday night? The Going Out Gurus: This is Kate and I like to play trivia on Tuesday nights, as does Fritz. I've played at Fado, Politiki and Stetson's. Of the three nights, my favorite is Politiki -- although the game is often tougher at Fado. Stetson's was pure chaos: too loud, too few servers and worst of all, no certain answers. Fritz is willing to share his survey of Tuesday night pub quizes.
"Sexaholix": The Style section wrote a fab review in today's edition. Don't you GOGs read your own paper? The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) knew there was supposed to be a review today, but I didn't see it buried amidst the online Style headlines. Goes to show that sometimes it's best to pick up the actual paper. Thanks for the head's up.
Falls Church, Va.: Where can I find a place that has salsa and merengue classes at a cheap price but with excellent results in a small time period? The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Falls Church. This is Anne, and I'm here to tell you that Fritz and I have given your question much thought. First off, most classes at clubs are one-night events; it's not like you sign up for a three-week course, and each time you go, you learn more advanced moves. But you can go several times in a short period, like Fritz has, and feel like you've learned something. Try Nick's in Alexandria, Clarendon Grill on Mondays, Zanzibar on Wednesdays or Habana Village on Wednesdays/Thursdays. Clarendon Grill is probably the cheapest cover, while Fritz loves Nick's instructor. I think the Habana Village instructors move quickly, but by the end of the night, you're loving your new moves.
Playing hooky: Maybe a day trip to Annapolis? The Going Out Gurus: Yes.
6th Street, Washington, D.C.: Saw John Leguizamo's "Freak" show at the Warner a couple of years ago, as well as the "Sexaholic" show on HBO. Very similiar, but funny and entertaining none the less. The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for your thoughts. By the way, here's the link to the Style review that, in my blindness, I (Jen) was unable to see: "Drawing Laughter From a Well of Family Pain".
U Street NW, Washington, D.C.: Has anyone tried this new restaurant Vida? I believe it's on 20th Street downtown. I walked by it on my way home from work and it looked really cool. The Going Out Gurus: Hey, U Street. This is Fritz, and we've got a lot of questions about Vida, so I'm going to try and answer them all here. I've been three times now, but just hit happy hour this week. I love the outdoor patio -- 3,000 square feet that aren't on the sidewalk, but Kate thinks it looks like "a business atrium." Inside, it's a cool blue and has more than 60 different tequilas for sampling and great bartenders. The dance floor upstairs is packed on weekends with hip-hop, house and top 40 (Friday) and Latin music (Saturdays, I think). They're adding more nights soon. The crowd varies from just-after-work (weekdays) to glammed up young professionals (Friday). It's still a work in progress, so check it out and let us know what you think.
12th Floor Metro Center: When are we going to get a new movie at the Uptown? I am so over Star Wars. The Going Out Gurus: Kate here and I think it's going to be "Minority Report" on June 21, and if I'm right, you only have to wait one more week. Have you seen the summer movie guide that Anne and Jen built?
Sexaholic?: I saw it. I thought his previous show "Freak" was much funnier. The Going Out Gurus: And still another Leguizamo opinion. Thanks.
Washington, D.C.: You gurus rock. First date tonight. I'm in charge of making plans. Help! Like to stay in the district, possibly Cleveland Park-ish area. Good wine selection a must. Ideas? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: It's Alexa Washington, and that's easy. Head, toot sweet, to the conjoined Ardeo (restaurant) and Bardeo (bar). No prob.
covered up, DC: For covered patios, try the Four P's in C-Park, Lucky Bar and Afterwords in Dupont, rooftops at Madams Organ and Brass Monkey... The Going Out Gurus: Nice.
Montgomery Village, MD: I'm a boy and the funnest girls I know love going to strip clubs from time to time. I'm not big on it myself but I enjoy going with them. People should lighten up and laugh a little. The Going Out Gurus: There you have it. If you're looking for a funny girl. Head to a strip club.
Petworth, Washington, D.C.: Sunday will be crowded at the Free-for-all. Not only is it the last night, it's Ward 4 night. (Special events for neighbors of Carter Barron.) It'll still be fun though -- just might be harder to get tix. Now, my question. It's getting to be rummage sale season, I think. But I don't know where to look to find out about church/school rummage sales. I've gotten some really great stuff at such places, but the only way I've ever found them is random chance. Is there a section in the Post, or the online Post, like the garage and estate sale section, that covers church and school sales? How do I find it? The Going Out Gurus: Hope our Free-For-All inquirer sees this - thanks, Petworth. Regarding church/school rummage sales, I (Jen) would think they are listed in the classifieds in the garage and estate sale section as you suggest, though I've honestly never looked. I'd start there first, though. Anyone else with other thoughts, please chime in.
The Congressional Territory of DC : I saw Beth Orton in NYC on Monday night at the Bowery Ballroom, and it was excellent. She played everything you'd expect from her two solo discs, plus a bunch of new tunes. The band included a standup bass, a cellist/violinist, and a small horn section. The sound was fantastic, and she is a lot of fun -- a lot of audience interaction. My advice: GO! I'd be there if I didn't have an out of town wedding. The Going Out Gurus: More support for Beth.
Washington, D.C.: Any good bars in the Dupont/Adams Morgan area to watch the U.S. Open this weekend? Or do you think all bars will show the tournament? The Going Out Gurus: Maybe I don't go to enough bars, but I've never seen golf being broadcast to an attentive barstool audience. Suggestions from the peanuts? There's always the bar at the University of Maryland golf course. I'm sure they'll be showing the tournament, but that's pretty much out of your way. - Rhome
Washington, D.C.: I'm looking for bean bags and other funky (and cheap) '70s rumpus room furnishings to put the wood-paneled basment of our new house. I was hoping to hit some consignment/thrift shops on Saturday -- or perhaps a flea market. Any suggestions? The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. As for flea markets, I (Maura) would skip Bethesda and Georgetown as they're less likely to carry the funkier end of furnishings. Check out Miss Pixies -- now with two locations -- for some odds and ends and the goods at Millennium on U Street. If you're still feeling thrifty, try this list.
Mclean, VA: Gurus, It has been along time! I have been away and now I am back in the area.I am looking for a place to take my girl for an intimate and fun time. A place similar to Tryst would be ideal. I would like to stay in the NW area but I am not opposed to other areas. On a somewhat related topic, I was wondering where young Black professionals hang out. In Atlanta there is this place called the Martini Bar. There you can find young Black professional sipping on Martinis and enjoying an Avo cigar. Is there any place like that around here? Thanks in advance, I am sure you guys will come through again. - RAS The Going Out Gurus: Welcome back, McLean. This is Fritz. Do you want coffee? If so, we'll recommend Zebra Lounge on Wisconsin Ave. near the Cathedral. If not, we'd say Chi-Cha Lounge or Bambule would be a good place to have a conversation in a funky atmosphere. For Black professionals, I think you'd like the One happy hour on Thursdays at the Saint (arrive early for martini specials), Flirt Wednesdays at 1223 (again, arrive early) or the Tuesday martini night at Murali Lounge. Plenty of cigar smoking at the Saint and Murali. All have dress codes to improve the atmosphere.
Wishing I were out of the city: My boyfriend's birthday is this weekend, and, assuming the weather clears up early enough, we are going to try to go hiking. He has requested a trip that includes a waterfall. Here's the catch: he's from NoVa and he's very outdoors-y, so all of the common parks (e.g., Great Falls, Cunningham Falls -- anything within, say, a one-hour driving radius of D.C.), are out because he's probably been. Any suggestions? (I've already plugged waterfall into your search engine.) I vaguely remember an article about this, but can't find it. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Hey, WIWOOTC. I (Anne) remember that story about waterfalls, too. Here's a promise. By tomorrow, you should be able to type in waterfalls in our search box and find it again easy. Or, you can always go to the Travel section, and look for all the stories in Maryland and Virginia.
Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: A question for Kate: What in the world are you going to wear now that Bill Blass has died? I know you're a die hard fan. Please comment on his legacy. The Going Out Gurus: What can I say? Blass was a gas. Maura met him once and remembers him as a "good midwestern boy from Fort Wayne, Indiana." I'll leave it to Robin G. to comment on Blass's legacy but I will let you know that my wardrobe enjoyed a radical upturn last week when, upon hearing the sad news of Lew Wasserman's passing, I decided that someone has to don the over-size moonish spectacles. I am the envy of all.
English brekky: A fry up without baked beans? I'd think you'd never even been to the Isles. The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) had numerous hungover fry ups during my student career in London, and almost all of them contained baked beans. I just told Alexa how shocked I was that she didn't mention them -- she is from Sarf London, after all -- and she said "They're disgusting. You must be from the East End."
WDC: Girls' night tomorrow night, starting with dinner at the Reef. Do you know if the outdoor area is open? Also, do we need reservations for dinner? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: See Fritz's answer about the outdoor area above. As far as reservations, we're not sure if they take them - you might just want to call and ask. Or be sure to show up early.
Covered patio: While not in D.C., Bistro Bistro in Shirlington has a very nice covered area in front of the restaurant perfect for watching people dodge raindrops. My honey and I sat there a while back when it was raining and thoroughly enjoyed the food (especially dessert) along with the heaters (probably not necessary these days) tucked under the awnings. The Going Out Gurus: Yes, yes, and yes.
For Petworth: Rumage sales: Check the 'hood papers Northwest Current and Capitol Hill Rag -- that's where people list their charity sales and garage sales for nuthin. The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tips.
S.S., MD: Fritz Hahn....interesting name. Is your family German? Where were you born? The Going Out Gurus: Born in P.G. County. Named after my German grandfather. Family from Bavaria, near München.
Regarding Petworth's Search: If you're looking for a rummage sale and looking to support a great cause, stop by Eastern Market on Sunday between 9 and 3, because Capitol Hill's own Capital Rowing Club will be sponsoring its 2nd Annual Sale to help support our community programs. We'll be at the corner of 7th and Independence, right next to Antiques on the Hill. The Going Out Gurus: Anything for you, Pet.
Red Line chick again: You don't have to post this, but thanks! You all rock! Most everyone I know says I am crazy for wanting to live in the city. I was afraid shops and stuff would be closed, walking the streets might be scary for a female alone (too many friends in the burb who try to freak me out), and I can't sit at a bar alone... never been able to. The Going Out Gurus: Good, please come back R.L.C. and let us know how you fared.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: What's a soft loaf? The Going Out Gurus: Ew, gross.
Arlington, Va.: I've heard no mention of what the crowds are like at Summers for the World Cup. I'm going there tomorrow morning for the U.S.-Poland game. When should I get there? This stuff is destroying my sleeping patterns, so any bit of "sleeping in" I can do is a valuable commodity. Thanks guys! The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington this is Joe and according to our colleague Jeffrey Marcus, Summers has had to turn people away from the games. So if you're going tomorrow for the 7:30 game, you might want to get there a couple of hours early.
Re: Strip Clubs: It's not uncommon behavior. You know the 50-year-old unshaven guys at strip clubs who blow their paychecks on the dancers because they think they have a shot with the dancers? That will be your friends in 25 years. They're in every group. The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Dad.
Washington, D.C.: Gurus -- I have a question that hopefully you all can answer. I'm looking to buy two bushels of crabs and 12 dozen oysters for a cookout next weekend. I went down to the waterfront and wasn't too impressed with the selections. Have you all come across a better place I might be missing? Thanks. The Going Out Gurus: No.
Arlington, Va.: Hey Gurus, do you know of any outing clubs or social sports leagues that I can join this summer to get a little exercise and meet people? Flag football just ended so I'm at a loss -- that was a lot of fun though. For outing clubs, I'm thinking of something along the lines of a club that offers multiple activities like biking, hiking, kayaking, etc., close to the D.C. area. For sports leagues, I'm not sure what's offered during the summer and I think I already missed the start of softball and kickball seasons. Any suggestions? The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. There's the pick-up scene at Learning Escapes, which does organize a mix of sporty outings. But I (Anne) would recommend mingling in several clubs -- each one committed to its particular sport. You might try a peek at some of these: the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club for hiking or the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. Or, when you see someone in a sport you'd like to try, ask them how they got involved. Chatters, other suggestions?
Washington, D.C.: I have a friend coming into town next weekend, and am looking for a fun restaurant for a group dinner. There will be about 10-15 people. We usually go to Bistrot du Coin, which is great, but would like to try someplace new. Fun drinks, fun atmosphere, good food--and conducive to group conversation. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. If you want to stay in that same area, try Mimi's. Singing waiters and my (Maura's) dinner there -- last week -- was delish. I'm guessing you'll call ahead for your larger party. Nearby Gabriel is also a goodie along with the Tabard Inn.
Salsa/merengue: Habana Village actually offers classes on Wed, Thurs & Friday. 2 hrs for $10 is a good deal. The classes have 3 levels (at least on Thurs & Fri), beginning, intermediate and advanced. If you go several weeks in a row, you will see many of the same people. The instructors are familiar with the faces and will add things progressively. I've taken intermediate and advanced classes there with usually good results, though it can be very tiring. Advanced can be very hard, but you do learn a lot. The instructors will dance with you at the beginning of the evening to figure out which group you should be in. The Going Out Gurus: Nice get, thanks.
Re: Barf city USA: Barf is totally out of touch with British culture, apparently. My husband is Scottish, and they eat the grossest food around. A fried breakfast is incomplete without at least four pork products (many involving lots of blood, ugh), fried bread, fried eggs, fried tomatoes and fried mushrooms, etc. They fry anything that stands still, and many things that don't. Try the Royal Mile. Excellent Scotch egg. The Going Out Gurus: Hoots, Mon.
Washington, D.C.: So I went to Dr. Dremos on Saurday night. There were about 10 people in there and I played two songs on the jukebox. Two and a half hours later, songs still haven't played. What gives? Is everyone paying extra to have their songs first? That sucks. The Going Out Gurus: Certainly does. This is Kate, maybe you need another juke. Pharmacy bar's box has yet to let me down.
Northern Virginia Buppie: I am planning to host a happy hour for about 25 black professionals (in the 25-40 age range) during the week of June 29-July 6. I am looking for a place in D.C. (other than Zanzibar) where we will feel comfortable and have some parking options. Last time I bought a round of drinks during the happy hour pricing period. I would like to do the same this time but spend less than $200 on mostly mixed drinks. Okay, run this through your party computer and help a brother out with a few recommendations. Thanks The Going Out Gurus: Hello, NVB. Do you want to reserve the place for yourselves or just hang out there? A few suggestions: Club 2001, the upstairs area at Bohemian Caverns, which has big tables and good bartenders; Twins Jazz, which offers free food and cheap drinks, along with jazz music; The Islander restaurant (also on U Street) with has fantastic drinks and food. Island Jim's Crab Shack in Brookland has parking and a Caribbean feel, down to the outdoor sand pit and tropical drinks. Ortanique (formerly BET on Jazz) has plenty of garages nearby and good food and drink.
Dupont: I'm serious! For the English breakfast--really, what's a soft loaf? I'm just a dumb American... The Going Out Gurus: Dupont. Loaf of bread. A soft one.
Washington, D.C.: Is it possible to find a room for only one night (at a good price)in Rehobooth or Dewey? Any suggestions on where or how to look? Obviously, this is for a trip to the Beach. The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) just returned from the beach and crowds were pretty light. If you go this weekend, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting a room; once the kids are out of school, it may be more difficult. Here's some info on accommodations.
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: Hi guys, I have a problem that I was hoping you could help with. I have conflicting events that I really want to go to tonight, but can't decide between them. Along with having a ticket to Othello at the Folger tonight, it's also what's likely to be the Stanley Cup-winning game for the Detroit Red Wings (I'm from Detroit). A possibility is to rush out of the play at 10 and see the last period, but am not sure if I want to risk it. I'd like to see the play, too, and also paid $35 for a ticket, which I'd be willing to forfit, if need be. Also, are there any good bars on the Hill that would be playing the game -- preferable big screen? We were thinking Red River Grill or Capitol Lounge. Please help me decide. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Math is hard, Cap. Hill. Kate again and I say either tape the game, if you can bear it and do both. "Othello" is good and I doubt any one there will spoil the results of the game. Or, you sell the tickets to a coworker and head home to ice your octopus.
Re: Vida: Any ideas on dress code? Do people go all out, or is it more casual? Thanks, LOVE the chats! The Going Out Gurus: It varies. On weekends, they specify "Summer Casual," which girls seem to get and guys don't. "Getcha linen pressed," is what I (Fritz) say.
Arlington, Va.: I've been heading up to Erico Cafe on U Street lately for Deepflyte, and am curious as to what else goes on in that area on the weekend? It doesn't seem as cheesy as heading to mid-town, and I prefer the more diverse crowd. Any other good parties you guys would suggest? The Going Out Gurus: Yes, more cool cosmopolitan folks on U Street. I second that heartily. You might want to check me out on Thursdays at Erico, or head there on Fridays for reggae. Right underneath Erico there's Cafe Nema, and they're jumping with jazz on weekends. Call to find out who's playing. I've been meaning to check out Tangent, which is every Wednesday at U Turn, 1924 11 St. Drum & bass dj's are featured. - Rhome
Rhome, good call on "props": I use the word all the time and never knew where it came from. Learn something new every day. The Going Out Gurus: I'm here to serve.
Arlington, Va.: I have a couple friends (we're mid-20s) coming to town for the 4th of July. They've been here before, have done most of the D.C. tourist-y stuff. Any ideas for what to do on Friday July 5? Thanks, you guys are the best. The Going Out Gurus: Hi there, Arlington. Fritz predicts that there will be many bar specials/happy hours for that long weekend, and I (Anne) predict that in just a few days, we'll have a whole list of Fourth of July details for you. In the meantime, I say: show your friends some of the development that's happened in D.C. since they were here last. Stroll along U Street, swing down to catch some of the shops on 14th Street, check out the galleries and restaurants downtown and visit one of the amazing exhibits in town this summer. To finish off the day, soak in summer at an outdoor bar.
Petworth: A suggestion for the group dine out: Bacchus, below Dupont Circle. The Going Out Gurus: Ladies and gents: Petworth!
Quantico, Va.: Hey Gurus, Where is a good fondue place to go (preferably not too far into Maryland)? Many thanks for all your help! The Going Out Gurus: I suppose, Quantico, I (Alexa) am forced to recommend the various Melting Pots, since fondue is all they do. It's an orgy of overindulgence, so watch out.
Silver Spring, Md.: Where's a good place for a total newbie to go to hear go-go? Who are good bands to look for? I heard Pleasure at a free event at Kennedy Center once, and I loved them! Are they still around? The Going Out Gurus: Whoa! Wind me up Silver Spring!! I don't think that Pleasure is still playing regularly, most of those members have gone off to find careers as session and touring musicians for other artists. You mean the all-female go-go band right?
Hey!: Blood sausage may be nasty, but fried bread JUST PLAIN ROCKS. And I'm from the Midwest. The Going Out Gurus: People from the Midwest have naturally high I.Q.s.
Foggy Bottom, Washington, D.C.: My husband enjoys shooting pool, but since he is British, the game he really loves is snooker. Do you know if there is anyplace in the D.C. Metropolitan area that has a snooker table? The Going Out Gurus: No ideas. Readers?
Speaking of Party Animals: I was in Chicago for their cows and even in Toronto when they did the moose, and I have to say, in comparison, D.C.'s organization of this thing blows! In the other cities each animal had a little plaque with the name of the art piece engraved in it. The names really helped pull everything together and give it a professional organized look. In D.C. it just seems they're just plopping them down wherever and hoping we'll find 'em. The Going Out Gurus: I (Maura) can't say I disagree SOPA. I was there the summer the cows were in Chicago and have to say even there they lost their luster, including the Mr. Imagination cow. Four years later it's a little hard to be excited. But if the D.C. Commission on Fine Arts does half as well as Chicago with their auction expect the trend to continue.
Washington, D.C.: Hi guys! When I first moved to D.C. from Los Angeles two years ago, I was distraught at the state of Mexican food out here. So a college friend took me out to Northern Virginia (Arlington?) for the best fish tacos I have ever had. It was a small place begun by a guy from Santa Monica who had the same gripes that I did. I remember the story well-enough but I cannot remember the name of the restaurant and I would love to take my L.A. friends there this weekend. Does this ring a bell with any of you? Any help that you could give me would do a world of good. The Going Out Gurus: Guajillo?
Smith Point: Have any of you been to Smith Point? I went once but couldn't figure out if it was part of a restaurant or what? The Going Out Gurus: Kate here, and I intend on doing some research this week. Smith Point is a club with a restaurant. They once had a rare but intreguing door policy of admitting people ages 23 and over. The restaurant's kitchen is only open three nights a week, but as the chef is David Scribner, formerly of Felix, it's well worth a try. Shall we?
Dupont: Buffalo Billiards has a snooker table. You're welcome. The Going Out Gurus: And you're rad. Thanks, Dupont.
Frenchman's Fiancee: Blood sausage is DELICIEUX. The idea is grody,. but once you get past that, the actual taste is quite enjoyable. It's my understanding, though, that you can't get a real boudin noir here in the States, so perhaps whatever they sell here is nasty. The Going Out Gurus: Merci.
Re: Melting Pots: Such great food and a fun experience. A little on the expensive side though. The Going Out Gurus: A forkful.
Arlington, Va.: Hey gurus, My project team (10+ people) recently won a $200 bonus, and we need a place for a celebratory happy hour. We want to avoid the Thursday night crush at typical haunts like Whitlows or Clarendon Grill, so want a new place, and a new day (M-W). We're based near Court House, but could venture anywhere nearby in Northern Virginia or even D.C. (though would prefer not to get stuck in traffic). To make it more difficult, we're a range of singles and married, recent college grads to older ex-government employees -- is there any place you could recommend with good drink specials and appetizers, that we'd all like (or at not have anyone feel too out of place)? I'd appreciate any recommendations! The Going Out Gurus: Good work, project coordinator. Fritz and I (Anne) suggest Clarendon Grill's patio, Whitlow's or Stetsons. As long as you go early in the week like you're planning, you should easily find room for your crowd.
22202: For crabs and oysters - Try M. Slavin and Sons on Glebe Road in Arlington, right near the 395 exit. Good selection of very fresh seafood. They've never let me down. The Going Out Gurus: Absolutely right. What was I thinking?
re: Fish Tacos: Could the place be Taqueria Poblano in DelRay in Alexandria? The Going Out Gurus: Could it?
The Going Out Gurus: Oops, I hit send before I was done. Anyway, back to the go-go newbie. You might want to check out Sugar Bear, Maisha or Suttle Thoughts. They play at Club U in the Reeves Center on U St. Urbanflavorz.com is a good source to keep up on who is playing where. - Rhome
English Brekka: What about Kippers? That's what my mom makes. . . The Going Out Gurus: But do you like them? This is Kate and I still push kippers around my plate.
Logan Circle, Washington, D.C.: Happy Drizzly Thursday to you, GOG's -- Have a date this weekend and was wondering any ideas for a cool D.C. bar with patio seating that I could hit this Saturday night, as I have a date with someone I've been out with only once before. He seems pretty laid back and appears to be the type that enjoys throwing a few beers back in an atmosphere that's hip and mellow. I'd prefer not to hit Georgetown or the waterfront area, as I've had my share of Backstreet Bores and Gucci Gals in the last few weeks. Anyplace where it's cool to throw back a few and grab something to eat while maybe catching some World Cup action would be great. Thanks guys! The Going Out Gurus: Fritz really liked Twilight on Friday nights on the roof of the Mass. Ave. Hilton.
City On Down: Gurus, I have a jonzen for buffets. 1. Is there a Tex-Mex buffet anywhere in the area -- make your own burritos, tacos, nachos etc.? 2. Is there a "good" Chinese buffet ya'll would recomend? I've been told that's an oxymoron, but I beg to differ. Happy guruing. The Going Out Gurus: My foodie friends love a Chinese buffet in Rockville, on Nicholson Lane, I (Anne) think. Anyone remember the name?
Alexandria, Va.: Do you know if you can order food in the Majestic Lounge? Your review notes that you can order food upstairs in the wine bar but doesn't say anything either way for downstairs. The Going Out Gurus: I'm sure you can.
RE Snooker: Buffalo Billiards in DuPont has at least one snooker table........Word. The Going Out Gurus: Sneaky, snooker.
Fairfax VA: Any of you going to Summers tomorrow for the US-Poland game? What time would you advise people to get there in order to get in? Also, in the Monday chat Michael Wilbon admitted that he had to watch the Korea game all alone ... so sad. Will you invite him to go with you tomorrow? I think he might enjoy it! The Going Out Gurus: Fairfax, people have been arriving hours before the game to secure a table, so getting there by 6 wouldn't be too early, we think. It'll also give you time to get food before the crush. And Wilbon gets everything on his dish. I doubt he'd head out with us. Desson Howe watches the matches at Lucky Bar, though. I (Fritz) still have beer stains on my shirt from Desson jumping up and down when England beat Germany last year.
Curious in DC: How do you guys get all these links up so quick? Man, you're fast! The Going Out Gurus: It's our roomful of monkeys, silly.
Re: go-go: Thanks Rhome! I knew I could count on you! BTW...are you the same Rhome that used to hang with Aaron McGruder of "Boondocks" fame? Love that guy! The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, we did some things. Now go out and start copping some PA tapes.
Arlington, Va.: Can you suggest a couple bars or restaurant/bars in D.C. where two to four 30 to 35 year olds could go to just hang out, talk and have a couple of drinks? We're looking for something more on the casual side. Thanks a lot! The Going Out Gurus: What about the Quarterdeck (Va), Starland Cafe, Bambule or Visions?
Tacos in VA.: Taqueria Poblano in Arlandria (2400B Mt. Vernon Ave. at Oxford St.) has the best Mexican I've had in the area, which isn't saying much, but it's very good and inexpensive. The Going Out Gurus: Good choice, Va.
Dulles, Va.: What can you tell me about the jazz concert outside the Hirshorn Museum on Friday evening? Also, after the concert we were thinking about going over to the Market Inn for dinner. Is that a good idea? Thanks a bunch for the advice. The Going Out Gurus: Dulles, hope you're still here, the concerts are at the National Gallery of Art. And Market Inn is a sweet choice. I wonder if they still have softshells on the menu. Thanks so much for joining in this afternoon. We'll be back next week with a special weddings edition in the second hour. We hope you say "I do."
