Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com
Thursday, May 30, 2002; 1 p.m. EDT
Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Shall we begin placing bets on whether I can get up and out at 7:30am tomorrow to catch France v. Senegal? Will it be all for naught once Fritz starts handing me early morning wine? It's Rhome here, and although I prefer playing over watching, there's no vaccine for the bug once the World Cup is underway. If you happen to be immune, a quick sweep of the E-Guide reveals a bunch of great alternatives to the beautiful game. Cocktail Charities are doing their thing tonight as is Musiq Soulchild. And I can't let you forget to do your duty as active Washingtonians and get your vote on. Anne, Kate, Fritz, Jen and Joe are with me, although the latter is scowling but that's nothing new. Now let's get down to business.
Alexandria, Va.:
GOGS, first time question. I have a first date with someone visiting the area next week. If the weather is nice, I would like to grab drinks, maybe dinner, somewhere with a deck or patio outside for people watching. Would like to stay in D.C., and am thinking either the Dupont or Capitol Hill neighborhoods. Help!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Alexandria. This is Fritz. You have a few choices here. Dupont is easier than the Hill: There's Lauriol Plaza (our staff is split on the food, but it's great for drinks and people watching), Gazuza (likewise) and Foodbar, which has the biggest patio in the area. The Fox and Hounds has a large patio, strong mixed drinks and okay food. Wazuri has a good sized rooftop patio and tasty African dishes. On the Hill, I like Capitol Lounge for drinks, or maybe the Dubliner or Politiki. There just aren't many good people-watching patios on the Hill.
Wither the Janus?:
I just noticed yesterday that the Cineplex Odeon Janus at Connectictu Avenue and R Street is closed! Granted, I kind of hated the place with its minimal leg room and those annoying poles in the middle of the theater, but it's a shame to lose another theater so soon after the Foundry shut down. What happened?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, it's true the Janus has closed. I (Jen) didn't frequent that theater much (see reasons you mentioned) but agree that it's yet another loss to D.C. proper's cinema scene. Since Loews Cineplex is building a new theater in Georgetown and the company just emerged from bankruptcy, I suspect they're trying to clear D.C. of older theaters that don't bring in much revenue. (That was their reason for closing Foundry.) Hopefully the new theater will still show some of the arty films that used to pop up at the Janus and Foundry. Otherwise, everyone will go to Landmark in Bethesda, and that won't be good because I can barely find a parking space there as it is.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
My girlfriend likes all types of Asian food: Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Thai etc. I'd like to take her to an Asian place that is a little more upscale, creative and trendy in decor than the typical neighborhood Asian restaurant. What can you recommend in NW Washington?
The Going Out Gurus: Penang is what you need. And if you stick around later into the night Thursday through Saturday, the dj's there play groovy tunes. - Rhome
Washington, D.C.:
Hi gurus, love the chat! Please, please, please help!
My best friend's boyfriend wants to ask her to marry him and has enlisted my aid in his endeavor. I know my best friend has always wanted to ride in a hot air balloon, and her boyfriend thinks that would be a great idea. Any hints on places in the area where we could pull this off? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Will your friend's boyfriend sing "Up, Up And Away" during the proposal? Because if he doesn't, that would be a crying shame. Jen here, and we just so happen to have a list of hot air balloon companies. Take a look and start making some calls.
Washington, D.C.:
Do you think the Coca Cola summer concerts that start this Saturday will be any good? Do you think you need to get there early?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC, this is Joe and I'm not scowling, no matter what Rhome says. Let's see, are these DC Sessions concerts going to be any good. Well, it depends on your tastes, I think. Mainstream rock fans should be happy, but you may have to look elsewhere if you're an indie rock fan or if you like hip-hop. I bet they'll have big crowds, so yes, get there early.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Hi guys, are there any rooftop bars or restaurants that overlook the Capitol Dome?
I rented the movie "Hollow Man" recently and in one scene they were at some really nice restaurant that had a terrace that overlooked the top third of the Capitol. Just wondering if something like that exists or if it's Hollywood magic.
The Going Out Gurus: Dupont, I (Fritz) haven't seen "Hollow Man," but I have had cocktails at dinner at the Capitol View Club. It might be what you're looking for.
Arlington, Va.:
Help! I've been invited to Dave & Busters tomorrow, but I'm car-less. Is there ANY way to get there using the Metro or public transportation? I'd even take metro to the closest station and then taxi. I know little about Maryland and can't seem to tell from the driving directions on the Entertainment Guide.
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Ah Virginians, so ignorant of we Marylanders and our wonderful ways. (I kid because I love.)
Actually, Arlington, you can take the Metro to Dave & Buster's and walk it; it's a little bit a hike, but on a nice day it should be no problem. Metro to the White Flint station, then head south on Rockville Pike and you'll eventually hit White Flint Mall on your right.
If weather is bad, I (Jen) advise that you take a short cab ride from the Metro.
Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus! I'm a recent transplant from New York and you guys have been great for learning what there is to do is this town. Hoping you can help me out -- where can I get a good white sangria? Decent chow would be a bonus.
The Going Out Gurus: I've had a really good one at Jaleo. I know folks either rave about this place (food) or gripe about it (crowding) but I'm just talking about white sangria here. I was very pleased. Folks that get all caught up in the red, which is fly in its own right, hardly ever explore how good the white can be. Why do I end up setting off sangria debates every single week? - Rhome
Washington, D.C.:
Hi Gurus,
Can you please tell me where it is I can find the list of rooftop dining? Any recommendations for the Adams Morgan area?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. This is Fritz. We're without Alexa today - she's off celebrating some Golden Jubilee or other - and I'm not sure where her list is. I can tell you, though, that your Adams Morgan choices are Perry's and, um, Perry's, until the Reef opens its deck around June 8. I'm not sure we're still recommending the food there, though.
I've put together a rooftop drinks story (you can read it soon), and my list of restaurants includes the Hotel Washington, Perry's, Lauriol Plaza, Wazuri and Tia Queta.
Arlington, Va.:
A few days ago you guys at the post put out a huge guide to Memorial Day and summer 2002. It looked like a great resource. Now I can't find it ANYWHERE. Where'd it go?
Please help! This weekend I want to go berry picking in Virginia and now that list is nowhere to be found. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: We're glad to know you like the Summer Guide, Arlington. It is still on the front of the Entertainment Guide, next to the picture of J Lo, with the header "Sun Screens." You can also find a link to it on the Movies page, next to the picture of Yoda. And the berry picking story is still inside.
Petworth, Washington, D.C.:
So Rhome, have you tried the sangria at Churreria Madrid yet? We're still waiting for your report.
The Going Out Gurus: Arggh!!! I'm slippin'! I'll get on the ball and handle that. Where there is sangria, there is Rhome!
Sorry to Say:
Gurus, I come to you with sad news. As someone who has followed your chats for a long, long time I must say that you guys are going downhill. I know this is something that has come as you guys got more popular but come on, you guys used to be fun and modest now you guys have become mini-celebrities and think you're oh so cool. I guess I can now say "oh I remember when the Going Out Gurus used to be cool" but you know, somehow I still wish you were. Oh well, you can't have everything and I just wanted to say that it was great while it lasted.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Sorry, this is Joe and I couldn't agree with you more. I think the problems began when we all started taking steroids. And it's true about us becoming obnoxious mini celebrities. I used to think other drivers were giving me the finger because my driving was lousy, but now I know that they just don't like this chat. Oh well, at least we've got the archives to read.
Asian Restaurant:
How about TenPenh for upscale Asian?
The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, how about it? Have you posted your user review yet? We'd like to hear from you. - Rhome
Responding to Alexandria first date person:
How about grabbing a drink atop the Hotel Washington? Talk about a view.
Then cab or take a long stroll to Bistrot du Coin for excellent people watching.
The Going Out Gurus: I likes, I likes.
Fairfax, Va.:
Hello, gurus. Weird question for you. Hubby and I are moving out of the area, after living here for three years, to return to our native New England. We're looking for some memorable things to do in our last few weeks here. I obviously can't list everything we've done around here, but we've, sadly, stuck mostly to the more touristy (read: near the mall) things. And we've been to most of the smaller museums in the Dupont area. Are there any other hidden gems we should try to experience before moving? How about must-eat-at restaurants we should sample? (Nothing too pricey, please.) Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Your question is fun city, Fairfax. This is Kate and I'm happy to share a few of my must-dos, but I'd welcome suggestions from LOLand too.
Have you ever taken the Spy Tour, seen Dumbarton Oaks at its peak, sat in the rowdy section at a DC United game, picnicked at the National Arboretum, paddled on the Potomac, walked Great Falls and watched the kayakers, brunched at Gabriel, eaten Boog's in the bleachers at Camden Yards, smacked crabs at Jimmy Cantler's, dragged friends to bingo or had a barbecue sammich before a concert at And Rhome... of course you should get up early tomorrow -- it's the start of the world cup for goodness sakes. Nothing more important is going to happen for another four years.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, WCW. This is Fritz again, fresh from calling even more restaurants about viewing. Problem is, the matches don't start until 2:25, not 1:25. Big difference there, as that's around last call - bars have to close by 3 - and D.C. didn't want to let the establishments stay open.
The Diner in Adams Morgan will be open 24 hours, though, as will - I think - the Roger Miller restaurant in Silver Spring.
I blame the stupid D.C. Alcohol Regulators, who actually were worried about "hooliganism" after bars closed, and having to have police stationed at said bars. They don't understand the importance of the World Cup, and how many people actually want to follow their teams, especially among our huge international community.
Kudos to Summers, by the way, for staying open 24/7 for the duration of the tournament.
Is this for real?:
Maybe one of you guru's has the inside info on something I heard yesterday. Are Weezer, The Strokes and Dashboard Confessional really touring together? I heard they're supposed to play around here in July?
If so, any idea where and how much tickets are going to be?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, this is Joe and according to Pollstar.com, Weezer and Dashboard Confessional are touring together, but no word on the Strokes. Look for the show to come through here in late July at either Merriweather or Nissan.
Washington, D.C. :
Greetings, Gurus. Please help me out. Does washingtonpost.com have a "weekend getaways" link? I'd like to head out of town for just a day. Looking for some place historical/educational. Somewhere along the lines of Colonial Williamsburg but not that far away. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Straight from our Travel section we have our great archive of Escapes - Rhome
Re: Arlington, Va. -- Dave and Busters:
Hi Gurus. Don't forget to tell the chatter about the shuttle that runs from White Flint Metro to the mall; for free! I don't know what time it stops running, but I'm sure not before the mall closes.
The Going Out Gurus: Ooh, good call. Thanks for the tip.
The Going Out Gurus:
U Street, Washington, D.C.:
What's the news on The Wag this Saturday at Black Cat? Do they expect to pack the upstairs venue a la Mousetrap, or can I look forward to actually having some room to dance?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, U St. This is Fritz. I don't think they're expecting a Mousetrap-esque packed house for the Wag's anniversary tomorrow. The Stones, the Who and rare Northern Soul don't have the same draw as Blur and the Stone Roses, judging by the good (not great) crowds the Wag gets on the Black Cat's back stage. I'm expecting plenty of room to dance. Should be a good time.
Alexandria, Va.:
Hi all. I was wondering what you know about Vintage Virginia, which is going on this weekend. Ever been? How are the lines? Can I get a few (or more) tasters without having to spend my whole day standing in line? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here, grape ape. I've been to Vintage Virginia before and it is a good time. Drive out to The Plains, to the Great Meadow (which has a view as sweet as it's name) or make reservations and take a shuttle bus from the Vienna Metro (round trip is ten bucks). Plenty to taste: There are upwards of 350 wines from 45 vineyards to choose from. There are a few lines of course, but as there are so few Virginia wines truly worth lining up for, these are well worth your time.
Yoda?:
Can we all agree that Yoda is the baddest mamma jamma in the universe?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, I (Jen) think we can all agree that Yoda rules the school. I'm not sure we can all agree on the quality of "Episode II," however. (See our many reader reviews for proof.)
K Street Cube, Washington, D.C.:
Hola, fine gurus! Looking at the weekend, I've been toying around with invites to the D.C. Sessions/G Love concert and a friend who wants to take me to Bohemian Caverns. Can you give me the skinny? Will the scene be good at either? This is not a choice -- I can do both. Just curious about the vibe. Thx!
The Going Out Gurus: G. Love? It's free! It's outside! You should go. As for Bohemian Caverns, if they're having live go-go there like Fritz and I suspect, you should go. Maisha & Sugarbear... Owwwww. Give them a call to confirm. - Rhome
Washington, D.C.:
Warning to the hot-air-balloon proposer: My best friend was in New Mexico with her then-boyfriend (now her husband) and he took her on a hot air balloon ride to propose. For some reason, it was so loud that when he got down on one knee, she thought he lost his contact! It turned out to be more hilarious than romantic.
The Going Out Gurus: Something to consider...thanks.
Washington, D.C.:
Fritz, what's up with your comment on the Reef's food? Is it slipping, or something?
I ate there last night, and it was still good, but you got me wondering.
The Going Out Gurus: No, sorry. I meant that it's a good place to dine - both Kate and I are fans of the food, especially the catfish and the grilled tofu with spicy greens - but the rooftop deck isn't open yet. Once it is, we'll recommend that as the best rooftop eats in Adams Morgan, not Perry's. Sorry if that came out wrong.
Kickball!:
Hi Gurus! Just wanted to plug our Kickball Happy Hour tonight at Adams Mill in Adams Morgan. Our division board members will be guest bartending and all tips go to our charities including March of Dimes and Friends of Walter Pierce Park. Also, for those who have thought about joining kickball leagues in D.C., this is a great opportunity to see what all the fuss is about! Starts at 6 p.m.!
The Going Out Gurus: Cool. Just make mine a bouncy.
Rosslyn, Va.:
Liebe Gurus,
Are there any cheap yet leisurely places for brunching vegetarians in Northern Virginia or Metro-accessible D.C.? Atmosphere is a plus. I wanted to do that gospel brunch at the Corcoran, but that's $22 a head. Too much for this group!
Danke Schoen!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Rosslyn, Anne here. I love Luna Grill and Diner on Connecticut Avenue (Metro: Dupont Circle) for brunch. They've very vegetarian-friendly, but beware, because they're also very crowded, so plan to linger on the sidewalk until they call your name. It's not the all-you-can-eat brunch, but the order-off-the-menu kind. That way, you can control the price. I also like Iota Cafe near the Clarendon Metro -- this is the club record, but they have wonderfully relaxed brunches, too. Check our list of many other favorite brunches that could fit the bill.
Weezer Tour:
Weez, Dashboard, and the Strokes ARE touring together this summer (plus some band I've never heard of called Sparta).
No D.C. date is confirmed yet, and the Strokes don't play every date, but this is the info that confirmed as of now.
The Going Out Gurus: Well, on the Strokes site it does list dates with Weezer, but not on any DC area show. We'll have to wait and see on this one.
Leather?:
I have a gay friend coming into town who wants to "hit the scene" while here. He refuses to go to JRs and says he wants a butcher, leatherier crowd. Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Have you considered the DC Eagle (639 New York Ave., 202/347-6025)? That's big with the leather crowd. If he's into the lumberjack types, there's also the Toolshed.
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.:
I am interested in the G. Love and Special Sauce show. Where exactly is it? And do you have any idea when G. Love will play. I heard he wouldn't play until closer to 8, is this true?
The Going Out Gurus: Click Me!
Falls Church, Va.:
Hi Gurus -- I think last week you mentioned a story on outdoor seating in Rosslyn area that was to come out last week. I couldn't find anything in a search. Is this story up? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Yep. I (Fritz) covered outdoor seating from Rosslyn to Ballston, with a few sidetrips to places like the Quarterdeck. You can read it here.
Petworth:
Ok, 2 questions for the price of one:
First - now that ALL the theaters are closing, what are we to do? I have heard rumors about the possible reopening of the theater on Conn. Ave at Chevy Chase Circle. What are the odds?
(And you know, when they tore down the Circle (you remember it, the one at 21st and Penn) they promised to replace it with a theater "just like it" when the new building went up. Wish that had panned out.)
Second, I ate at the new Sala Thai in Cleveland Park the other night, and have mixed reviews to offer. I swear that my vegetarian panang tofu was FULL of fish sauce. I hate that. Have you all been there yet, and what was your impression of the place? I enjoyed the other food I had, and the husband liked his food.
The Going Out Gurus: Apparently the effort to reopen the Avalon is very organized. The group behind the effort is having a lot of fundraisers; in fact, I (Jen) think they'll be staffing some tables outside the theater this Saturday. So the odds are better than usual that it could reopen. It would be great if it did.
As far as Sala Thai goes, I haven't been there yet, and we don't have a review on the site yet either. Anyone else have thoughts?
Washington, D.C.:
Do you guys know anywhere that I could get a "novelty" ID? It seems pretty necessary for night life around here. Thanks a bunch!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi DC, this is Joe. What do you look like? One of us can probably sell you one of our old ones.
Washington, D.C.:
For the "butch type place" question, you could also try Fireplace, which is right next to JR's.
The Going Out Gurus: That's a hot idea.
Trivia nuts:
We're taking a friend out tomorrow night for his birthday and he's a real trivia nut. We'd like to go to a place that not only has an interactive trivia game, but also decent food. Is that asking too much? Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Like a bar-top trivia machine, TN? I (Fritz) like the ones at Pharmacy Bar and Zack's. But if I were you, I'd wait 'til next week and take him to one of the area's trivia nights, so he could win some prizes. Of all the places that host 'em, I'd say Fado has the best food -- but I love the cheese fries at Stetson's.
Arlington, Va.:
Didn't you mention something last week about having a feature on Arlington rooftop/patio places? I've looked for it -- is it available yet?
The Going Out Gurus: Click Me! (the sequel)
Lucky Bar:
Which gurus will be there tomorrow morning for France/Senegal? Mmm -- nothing like a Bass first thing in the morning.
The Going Out Gurus: Actually, if we go out to watch the game, I (Fritz) am much more of a Capitol Lounge type than Lucky Bar. The beer at Lucky - especially the Bass and Newcastle - often tastes slightly off. Eric Brace and I were there and he agreed they need to clean the beer lines or something. (Don't get me wrong, I drink a lot of Bass on the job.)
Oh, and, uh, don't forget you can't drink alcohol until 8.
Jackie O:
Have any of you been to the Jackie Kennedy exhibit at the Corcoran? Is it a waste of time or a don't miss?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Katie G.) went to see this show and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it -- The Post did not. Often costume/fashion exhibitions concentrate on exclusively on the garment, but these are pro forma clothes. It's a working wardrobe, albeit glamorous from the early sixties. Mrs. Kennedy had a team of American seamstresses ready to knock off her French favorites in six easy to wear colors. But I believe you can see her feeling increasingly comfortable with her role. Toward to end of the Kennedy presidency she wore increasingly daring gowns (get a load of the green chiffon column) and racier color combos. Honestly, I was moved by the show and recommend it. But for heaven's sake, don't submit to the "VIP Tuesday" tour and shell out $40!
Washington, D.C.:
Gurus -- hey, the chat's great, even if your egos are a tad more inflated than before!
Looking for a good place to have a meeting in Adams Morgan -- someplace for eight people or so, where we can sit, maybe have a drink or two. Any ideas? Tryst is always sooo crowded!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, leggo my ego. Kate here, D.C., have you considered the Duplex Diner? The managers are really nice and if the time's right, they might reserve a big table for you. They have a sweet collection of appetizers including piggies in blankets!
Arlington, Va.:
Y'all know anything about The Grandsons? Is it band or what? They're at HH at Visions tomorrow night, and I'm tres curious. Oh, and have the GOGs ever been to CineVision? What's it like?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. It's Fritz. I've been to CineMusic a few times -- most recently for the Young Soul Rebels/Absolute Beginners screening a few weeks ago -- and I'm not sure what to make of it. They just show the movies on the TVs (and big screen) in the lounge and offer drink specials while a DJ spins tunes. But the music doesn't always fit, so it's a bit of a mixed bag. Not bad if you want to see the movies, though.
The Grandsons are a well-known local R&B/rockabilly/western swing band. Interesting mix of sounds, and worth a listen.
Arlington, Va.:
GOG's --
You mention visiting Dumbarton Oaks during its flowering peak. Do you know when the peak is or should I call them directly?
Thank you!
The Going Out Gurus: Spring flowers have almost come to an end but it's looking pretty great right now. These gardens are immaculate.
Shaw:
Re: Cocktail Charities tonight at Angles and Pharmacy Bar. When does it start getting crowded? What's a good time to show up?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Shaw. It gets crowded around - oh - 8, maybe 9. Lots of people come from work or other happy hours. Pharmacy is small, so I (Fritz) plan on getting there somewhat early. Cocktail Charities does start to thin out later, because it is a school night.
Beach Bound Gal:
So excited-- heading to Ocean City for a long weekend after work today! (not to rub it in, ha ha) I saw the OC guide in The Post, but are there any other places we must hit?! We're all 20-something women looking for fun -- but not too cheesy.
The Going Out Gurus: Cheesy is a relative term, because a lot of beach bars are cheesy but still a good time.
I (Jen) recommend hitting the numerous bars on the bay side of Ocean City: places like Fish Tales (22nd and bay), Macky's (54th and bay), BJ's (75th and bay) or Mellow Beach (46th and bay). And, of course, there's always Seacrets and Fager's Island, though you may be dipping your toe into Velveeta waters depending on your taste. Enjoy the weekend.
Arlington, Va.:
I was thinking of trying one of the seafood restaurants on the SW waterfront this weekend. Which one do you recommend? Is Phillips Flagship the best one?
The Going Out Gurus: This is Kate and while I'm no Alexa, I think she and agree that the formal choices along the SW waterfront are really outshone by the fishermen's stalls. Buy some crabs (by the bushel or 1/2 bushel and they always throw some extras in.)
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Can you tell me more about the modern art exhibit at the Corcoran? Like what to expect, who the Artists are, etc. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, DC, this is Anne. I'm guessing you mean the Jasper Johns to Jeff Koons exhibit from the Broad Collection -- the one that closes this Monday. You can read the Michael O'Sullivan's review of the exhibit from the Weekend section in that link. Beside the artists in the title, you'll also see works from Roy Lichtenstein, Charles Ray, Cindy Sherman, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Anselm Kiefer. If our museums editor Maura were chatting with us today, I bet she'd tell you to "look for Johns's first crosshatch painting and Andy Warhol's ever-popular Marilyn and Elvis canvases." It was one of her must-see picks when the exhibit opened in March. Go at 2:30 this Sunday, and you can catch a gallery talk on the exhibit.
Washington, D.C.:
Fun first date ideas. Paddle boats on the tidal basin. Find out when the sun sets and get tickets to the Washington Monument to watch it set. I believe the monument is open until midnight in the summer. But they have very strict rules on food and drinks (no gum, mints or anything even unopened in your purse).
The Going Out Gurus: We heartily concur.
Arlington, Va.:
I love the Metro Cafe, and was thinking about checking out Panic on Fridays. What's the scene like? Crowded? Low-key or high-maintenance? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. I (Fritz) haven't stuck my head in Panic for a couple weeks, but friends who went last week tell me it's a bit more low-key and less crowded than it was last year, which is a good thing. The crowd is still mostly indie rock/'80s music fans. Some people dress up, but it's fairly casual.
Washington, D.C.:
Do you know of any fun event at the Metro Cafe? I really enjoyed the Depeche Mode tribute/dance party and am wondering if anything similar (not specifically a DM re. party) will be organized soon either at the Metro Cafe or any other place.
The Going Out Gurus: The guys who organized the Depeche Mode/Morrissey v. Cure parties are taking a break for the summer, Washington, but there's a New Order dance night coming up on June 15. How's that?
Washington, D.C.:
What is the deal with the FONZ Young Professional Program? Are their after work happy hour events any good? Is it worth the $10? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: DC, this is Anne, and I laughed for hours after I read the name of the FONZ's June 13 happy hour, Who Let The Prarie Dogs Out. I think it even tops their previous one, They Might Be Giant Pandas. Even if it weren't for the Chipotle food, I'd go on the basis of the name alone. But that's me. Are there any FONZ young professional happy hour veterans in our midst who can relate their experiences?
Penang?:
You gurus keep recommending Penang, which befuddles me. I was there just after they opened and the service was S-L-O-W (two hours for lunch). The food was decent, but seemed a little pricy for what you got. All in all, it was a distinctly bad first impression.
Have things improved? Is it time to give them another shot?
The Going Out Gurus: I'm no Alexa but I dug the food and the atmosphere. Last time I was there it took a long time too but I was with a huge group, like 16 people. Maybe you should give them another shot. Who else wants to weigh in? - Rhome
Centreville, Va.:
Hi gurus! I have a good friend coming into town this weekend. I haven't seen her in months and am really looking forward to catching up with her. I'm looking for somewhere in the city where we can linger over drinks for a good long while without feeling like the staff wants to kick us out. Also, since catching up is the idea, we need to be able to hear ourselves think. Metro accessibility is a must. Any ideas? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Ah, Centreville, this is what hotel bars are made for. This is Kate and I think you should pick one (or two) and spend a happy air conditioned afternoon lounging on the leather couches at the grander Mayflower (Farragut North) or in a shadey corner or the homier Tabard Inn's garden (Dupont Circle). There will be no specials, but the Mayflower has fancy nuts (and my all-time favorite gin and tonic)and the Tabbard has a new menu with snappy snacks like smoked salmon.
Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus! Love the chats.
Last night my husband and I drove by the parking lot at 13th and U and noticed they put up a fence all around it. (I know they are planning on building high-end condos and shops there) Do you guys know if the flea market is moving? If so, where?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Gosh, D.C. I haven't seen any signs -- save the big development corp advertising "Ellington Suites" -- about the flea market. Anyone else have some news?
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Have any of you all checked out the Jazz Night at Signatures? I've been to the outside patio it's fresh and fun. It's a who's who place to hang out.
The Going Out Gurus: Haven't been yet. When and where Dupont?
Upscale Asian:
The reader may also want to check out Yanyu in Cleveland Park for great, hip Asian cuisine.
The Going Out Gurus: Expensive too.
wdc03:
hey gurus! happy thursday! need some
suggests from you all....i'm supposed to
meet an old college friend, who i haven't
seen in 5 or 6 yrs, tonight for a late HH
(7:30pm). need someplace not too loud
b/c we wanna catch up, and that won't
leave our wallets empty of the cash
money. thinking farragut
west/north/dupont area, definitely metro
accessible, and maybe with outdoor
seating since the weather is SO nice. are
we asking too much?! any ideas? thanks
a bunch. you guys rock!
The Going Out Gurus: Wellllllll, wdc03, you have to choose between happy hour and outdoor seating. The best I (Fritz) can tell you is that Buffalo Billiards has a small patio and $2.50 Buds or $3 microbrews/rail drinks until 8. Other places with happy hours past 7 - Madhatter, Lulu's - aren't the kinds of places where you can sit and talk. The bars with cool patios - Gazuza, Lauriol Plaza, Wazuri, Tabard Inn - aren't exactly cheap.
I suggest you just do what I'd do, and get rail drinks or bottles of Bud from the Fox and Hounds. They're strong (the mixed drinks) and dead cheap, and the patio is a cool place to hang out.
SciFiGirl:
Gurus -- I gotta say, I went to Wazuri last week when I had some friends in town, despite the warnings about the poor service. Well, the poor service is still a matter to be dealt with. Even though I made reservation, for five people, we were put a table that was really comfortable for only two or three. The waitress finally brought a second table over, but wasn't very accomodating when we asked about changing tables. Our food took forever to come, and while everyone agreed that their fish was good, the rice tasted like it was made from Lipton's mix, and the vegetables were pretty unexciting. I will say that dessert was good, and the drinks were good. But I would not rush back there as a destination.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for writing in. Do you know you can post a reader review on the Wazuri page? This is Kate and I too was surprised by the high marks the food earned from Tom Sietsema.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Fireplace is -not- next to JR's! And it definitely is not butch, either.
They must be thinking of Mr. P's .
The Going Out Gurus: They must be.
Re: Vintage Virginia:
I've never been to a tasting festival. So, um, for $20, you get lotsa wine, right? Is food included?
The Going Out Gurus: Food is not included. And in the face of so many samples, the odd cracker definately doesn't count.
Arlington, Va.:
Hey gurus.
Going to the O's game this Saturday. First pitch is at 7 p.m. Can you suggest any good bars near Camden Yards to hang out at before the game? Or does Baltimore extend outside your realm of "going out" knowledge? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington -- check out our story on where to get a drink before an O's game. I (Fritz) love, love, love the Wharf Rat and Max's.
Baltimore, Md.:
Does Sign of the Whale still have that Sunday make-your-own-Bloody brunch?
The Going Out Gurus: This one? They sure do, and it's available on Saturdays as well.
Stars in Virginia:
Truly relish your chat though I dont often get to keep up with it as it is occurring so I was hoping you could either respond or include this post in this weeks episode. Im trying to find the ideal spot to watch a sunset in the D.C./Virginia metro area. More importantly, however, is my quest to find a good, romantic planetarium to take someone very special so that the two of us can just sit and look at the stars for a while as someone who knows more about astronomy than I lulls us into a state of wonder with his/her soothing voice and cosmic attitude. Also looking for something open during the evening hours. Does such a place exist? Can you help? I live in Falls Church but driving distance is not an issue. Im willing to go far.
The Going Out Gurus: For sunsets, I think someone chimed in earlier about the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. I can't top that one right now, but maybe the collective brainpower of the group can. Anyone? As for planetariums, I think cosmology is inherently romantic, but I'm a nerd. - Rhome
Your Hatted Chatter:
For the 23rd birthday person from last week (I was out hiking with my dad -- more later), there's a bowling alley near the Silver Spring Metro. Can't remember the name but I think it might be a Bowl America location. Hope it helps, although the billards suggestion was too.
The Going Out Gurus: Bowl America it is, says former Silver Spring resident Fritz.
Going out in Dupont Circle:
For the poster with the out-of-town "family" man looking for a "butch type of place," the Fireplace is NOT next to JRs. They are on opposite ends of the circle. I'd recommend the Eagle or the Greenlantern/Toolshed. A word of caution: the Eagle can be totally skank. For a "brighter" environment check out the Toolshed.
The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like you know what you're talking about. Much obliged.
Washington, D.C.:
Georgetown used to have places, like the Marquis de Rochembeau, where you could have a great time without the onslaught of thousands of preppy losers. Can it possibly be that the entire neighborhood has been turned into a gigantic frat party?
The Going Out Gurus: Preppy Losers, Washington? That's a bit harsh. Have you been to the extravagent new bar at the Harbour Club? Modern? The Deck? Mr. Smith's? (It's not really that preppy on a Saturday night.)
Arlington, Va.:
Any word on the proposed no-wine thing at D.C. art galleries?
And while we're on the booze tip, why does D.C. have no cool little BYOB restaurants like New York, Baltimore and Philly? It makes for a fun, festive and casual vibe, not to mention cheap.
The Going Out Gurus: This is Kate, and there's no word yet, Arlington but Maura's on the case. It all comes down to liquor laws. There are a few ways to beat the price game: At Grille 88, for example, on Mondays between 6 and 8 p.m. four flights of wine and paired hors d'oeuvres (and a guided tasting) is $15. There are specials but you do have to hunt them down. I only know about this one as it's in my neighborhood.
Alexandria, Va.:
Hello Gurus!
After the back and forth responses to Bar Rouge, I went there and was not disappointed. Crowded, but size plays a big role. One question, do you know who designed the place and can we expect more in the future?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Alexandria. Glad you liked Rouge. I (Fritz) am not sure who designed it - I'm waiting for a callback - but it's part of the Kimpton Hotels chain. They also own Topaz and the soon-to-open Hotel Monaco. The last I heard, that bar is opening on June 15, along with the hotel. Hopefully it's a touch bigger.
Paddle Boats?:
Paddle Boats are #1 on my list of "Things That Look Like a Lot More Fun Than They Actually Are." Walk around the Tidal Basin and hit the FDR and Jefferson Memorials instead.
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here and I could not agree more strongly.
"Hollow Man":
They actually filmed that on the balcony of the Department of Labor builduing. (I used to work there). They constructed a set on the corner of the building to look like an outdoor restaurant.
But don't dine at the DOL cafeteria. The food stinks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hollow Man. Stinky food.
Fire Fish:
I've been listening to the The Grandsons for almost 10 years now, "an interesting mix of sounds" doesn't really do them justice. They are first-rate musicians that swing, croon, bop and crack me up-with their original material.
That and you just gotta support Visions Theatre and Cafe -- I can't thank them enough for being more than just a business, but making huge efforts to be a part of the D.C. community and sooooooooooo supportive of local artists. XOOXOXOXOXOX
The Going Out Gurus: Sorry, FF. I (Fritz) have seen the Grandsons at the Birchmere and Iota, and I was trying answer quickly. The short answer is that if you like Americana, you should hear them.
And we're with you about Visions all the way.
Washington, D.C.:
Ska is definately making a revival here in D.C., and I'm not talking 3rd wave Ska either! After having packed the house at The Marx Cafe for Sound Clash Earlier this month, DJ Scientifik teams up with Mad Squirrel (of the Checkered Cabs) for a new night at the Metro Cafe. "The Hideaway" Starts at 10 p.m. tonight and features Obscure Ska/Soul/Garage music. Best of all, there's no cover. Grab your friends, and head down to the Metro Cafe for some great dancing! Metro Cafe is located at 1522 14th St. NW (14th and Church) Accessible by the U Street or Dupont Metro.
The Going Out Gurus: Cool. I (Fritz) miss the Cabs. And the Sidewinders and all those great local ska bands. So if you like ska ...
Stressing in Washington, D.C.:
Hey there! Any suggestions for a day of activities I can plan for my boyfriend's birthday? He's creative and adventurous and has done all the typical DC fare. Alternately, can you suggest any low-budget but memorable overnight getaways? My main criterion is hearing him say "Wow... I NEVER would have thought of that!" Thanks so much!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, DC. There's no need to stress. Why, just look at all the ideas our readers shared in this discussion so far. Maybe you could scroll through the discussion with your eyes closed. Wherever your cursor stops, plan a birthday stop there. Repeat, for a very randomly planned day.
I (Anne) am not sure what date you're planning the birthday celebration for, but you can use our calendar or summer guide to find a list of events happening on a certain day. Maybe pick a few things he really likes, then do those to the max. For example: he likes donuts, you stop at the Krispy Kreme factory in Alexandria. He likes comedy, you take a workshop or see a performance by Washington Improv Theatre. As for cheap overnight getaways, you can't beat a campsite in Greenbelt Park.
Washington, D.C.:
Hi all, do you know a good place to get fruity (booze) drinks in the Foggy Bottom, Georgetown area? I do enjoy making my own but it would be nice to get out some. Thanks much!
The Going Out Gurus: Great fruity drinks at Toka (20th and L, it's close enough), Busara, the Daily Grill, and - shockingly - the "Tiki Bar" at Third Edition. I wasn't expecting much, but they're decent. The Harbour Club might be worth a shot. Friends of mine also like Modern.
Advice for the Asian in NW:
Go for Raku -- cute, trendy, good food and pretty darn cheap!
Avoid Thaiphoon. A big ugh.
The Going Out Gurus: Okay.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Jazz at Signatures: It's Saturday nights around 6-ish. Tom Sietsema reviewed the restaurant last week (it's on Pennsylvania Avenue) and was a bit harsh, but did get the awesome atomosphere, and staff right. The have a fantastic martini menu, and the bartenders make em STRONG. You gurus should check it out!
The Going Out Gurus: Yes we will!
Capital Area:
Hey -- do you omniscent beings know whether the National Kidney Foundation will be having their annual volleyball marathon this July? No information as of yet on their Web site, and as a past participant, I was looking forward to playing again! Please say they will. This is a great way to give back to the community and have fun at the same time!
The Going Out Gurus: I've been hunting this whole hour, CA, and I (Anne) have turned up no solid facts yet. Let's promise to report back to each other as soon as we have more info.
Old Town, Alexandria, Va.:
Hi GOGS --
Impoverished student here.
(1) How do I get invited to gallery openings in the area, short of buying artwork in every gallery that interests me?
(2) Are any embassies having open houses/game viewings during the World Cup?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi co-eds, this is Kate. If you have a favorite gallery, especially ones like Govinda, Conner Contemporary, MOCA or David Adamson that have notoriously delightful openings, call them up and ask to be added to their mailing list. Maura's mothly "Museum Comings and Goings" column is another good source. Sounds like you might like Signal 66's rock 'n' roll shows too.
Few embassies will be as welcoming as the above galleries, but Fritz is perfecting a list of bars, embassies and restaurants that will be delighted to serve you an early breakfast if you want to watch the games live.
Girl's Night Out Saturday:
But where? We like Cafe Citron, Jaleo, Rhumba Room, Big Hunt, Mackeys, Guapos, Third Edition, etc.
Is the deck open at the Savoy on Wisconsin?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, GNOS. The Deck is indeed open, but I (Fritz) have passed it on my way home and it's been looking pretty empty. Maybe the crowds don't know it's open yet?
How about the new Vida (1120 20th Street)? I was there for the big opening party last week, and it's a fun place with a big dance floor, 60 tequilas and Latin flair. There's the bar at Ortanique -- you could have dinner at the upstairs bar, and they occasionally have live music. Or venture to Habana Village for mojitos downstairs and then salsa lessons and dancing.
Bethesda, Md.:
Wowie wow! Is it true that Velocity Girl is doing a reunion show sometime soon?!
The Going Out Gurus: Yep. June 9 at the Black Cat, to benefit Bridget Cross. But it might be sold out, so get tickets ASAP.
Curious in Northern Virginia:
1. I've heard of a place called Vida. Would it be a good place/club to take a girlfriend out to?
2. I don't think I would but there's a swingers club I heard about called Entre Nous -- any comments?
3. How do you get "VIP" at Dream?
Thanks a lot, you all have been a great help in the past!
The Going Out Gurus: 1. Maybe. Decent food, huge patio, lots of tequilas to sample, big dance floor upstairs.
2. No comment from us.
3. Either buy a pass ($300 for the year, at last check, from http://www.welcometodream.com) or make friends with the promoters/bouncers/bartenders.
World Cup:
Fritz, how can you NOT leave the house for the games? I realize it would be nice to be all cozy in bed and whatnot, but what could be better than shuffling down 18th Street in my jammies and fuzzy slippers to catch the 2:30 a.m. games at the Diner? Okay, so watching it at home could be, but I don't have cable and I'm trying to make myself feel better (blast that ABC, what else do they have to show at 2 a.m. on a Monday?) I'll buy you a drink if the U.S. gets out of the first round.
The Going Out Gurus: Hahaha. I'm watching most of the 2:35/7:35 games I want to see out of the house, either at the Diner, Summers, the Lounge, Roger Miller and maybe the Grill from Impanema. I doubt I'll make any of the 4:35 matches. But that's the beauty of having cable.
And hey, at least you won't have to buy me a drink...
The Going Out Gurus:
And with that last one from the boozehound we wrap up today's show. Thanks to everyone who joined the
