Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Welcome to another heart-warming edition of Got Plans? Of course, the big news today is "Star Wars," and we've compiled all the reviews and features about the movie into this one handy page. I, Jen, am acting as host today and have already seen "Episode II", so feel free to ask questions. (Reveal no spoilers will I.) In non-Jedi news, our summer guide is up and running and filled with events, and the Best Bets contest is still in full swing, so don't forget to play Guru and cast your votes. Alexa, Maura, Joe, Fritz, Anne, Kate and Rhome are all here, so let's get this party started.
Dupont Circle:
The World Cup is coming in two short weeks. Since the Cup is in Japan and South Korea the the game times are crazy....2:30AM, 3:30AM, 7AM etc.
Do you know of local bars/restaurants that will be opening early/late to show the games? Where can I catch the French games?
Thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Dupont. This is Fritz. In Washington, this issue isn't quite settled yet.The Lucky Bar-Capitol Lounge-Rock consortium, which shows soccer year round, wants to show all the games live. The Alcohol Beverage Control Board, however, doesn’t want bars staying open late. At the moment, Lucky Bar will be showing all the 7:25 matches live. And, in Dupont, I’ve heard that Bistrot du Coin is bringing in a big screen to show the French matches, probably on tape delay.
But if you go to Summers Restaurant in Arlington, they’re showing everything live with no worries, or so the manager told me on Monday.
Thank God for Germany 2006.
College Park, MD:
Gurus,
Submitting early (off to see Star Wars at
2), and not really a question as much as
a follow-up from last week. I wanted to
say Jen was right on target about
Mamma Mia, and she's the only voice of
reason I've heard. The show was just
BAD, and not in a good way. I'm glad I
read your comments, because otherwise
I would have gone expecting a joyous
time and ended up even more
disappointed.
At least we got to see two of the party
animals, so it wasn't a total loss...
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) am glad that my disappointment made your disappointment less disappointing. Or something. Now if only I could rid my ears of the horrendous sound of that one actor singing "Knowing Me, Knowing You"...
Dupont via Glasgow:
Word up gurus,
Kind of an off topic question here, but I'm hoping Fritz et al can shed some light.
I went to see Belle and Sebastian at DAR last night. AMAZING show. (I'm still planning on running away with Stuart #2 someday.) Anyway, the venue sucked. The security guards were all jerks, wouldn't let kids stand down front. I had a really good seat but was more than happy to stand up so that others could stand in the aisles and dance. I think that was the general attitude. It was also clearly distracting for the band. On a more selfish note, one we got inside and bought beers, we couldn't go back outside to smoke, nor could we take our drinks into the theater (fair enough) so we were confined to a tiny little strip of lobby in which to gulp our drinks.
On a positive note, the acoustics in the theater were awesome.
So what gives? Why were such cool bands playing such a staid venue? Does it come down to money? They would have been soooo much better at 9:30. All in all, it was an awesome concert but a rather disappointing concert-going experience. Is there anything I, a lowly DC resident, can do to keep shows away from DAR in the future?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Dupont via Glasgow. This is Joe and I was also at the show last night. Really enjoyed it and thought the band sounded great. I don't think it's worth complaining about the security, though. They keep everyone out of the aisles for security and safety reasons. Belle and Sebastian could have played at the 9:30 but Constitution Hall holds more than 1000 more people, so that's the trade-off.
Preakness?:
So, some friends and I were thinking of heading up to Baltimore for Preakness, but we don't know much about it. Do we need tickets in advance? How's parking? Do I need to wear a straw hat? Is it worth the trip? Any advice from the gurus would be greatly appreciated!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Baltimore. Gold Cup is to Preakness as Polo is to: (c) NASCAR. Okay, well, if you sit in the infield it is. This is Fritz, a native Marylander, to tell you that Preakness can be a fun day out if you like drinking lots of beer/liquor/wine coolers while some horses run around and the crowd tries to scam on each other. (Can you tell that I had a good time a few years ago?)
You can get tickets on the day -- we did -- but parking might be a nightmare. Leaving is similar to a Redskins game; it might take forever.
Still, you'll probably enjoy it. No straw hats are required, but a case of Natty Boh (retail price: $5.99) is the best accessory.
dc:
i have some friend visiting this weekend and was thinking of taking them to see the jackie o exhibit at the corcoran...do i need to buy tix before hand...or can i just get them there since, it's hard to predict exactly when we will go there?? are tix are to get? and is it worth seeing?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi DC. Maura here. You can get tickets beforehand for Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years. Since you're going on a weekend you might want to do that or at least arrive early in the day (before lunch) to get tickets for later in the afternoon. There's an extra fee per ticket purchased in advanced, so I'd see what your schedule affords. Is it worth it? That all depends. Are you a big Jackie fan? I'm a big Givency fan, and despite the presence of his dresses, I wasn't all that thrilled. If you're not sure you'd like it, you probably won't.
DC:
Help! I want to give two friends a b-day present that involves a wine class. I saw the tastedc class, but I was hoping to spend less than $40 a head. Any ideas? Thanks, I love the chat!!
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here, D.C., and I think most formal wine classes in and around D.C. are at least forty bucks (approximately 6 bottles of Chilean red). I get the feeling you'd like to toast your friends for $20 a piece. Got wheels, and you've got options. Many local vineyards have free tours with sips along the way. There are prettier spots like Farfelu and Jefferson, where you can talk varieties and preferences with the staff, get a flight and enjoy it while you picnic. I know Farfelu is holding a special event not this weekend but next: live bluegrass, bocce ball and vino. Or what about buying three tickets to Vintage Virginia, (June 1 and 2). Held in the Great Meadow in The Plains, Va. there are 100s of wines to sample, it's a very social affair. Buy your tickets in advance and they're only $16 (total cost minus picnic and gas: $48). Lush-ious.
wdc:
hi gurus--
i'm in constant awe of your collective knowledge....
i'm sure this question has come up before, but here
it is anyway: do you know of any clubs that will be
18+ next saturday (may 25)? i'm 25, but have a
cousin who's 19 and coming into town overnight.
insomnia? daedelus? either of them any good?
anything better? any suggestions you can offer
would be fabulous. thanks kids!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, wdc. It comes up all the time, but not worries. You have at least seven options (eight if your cousin is female, as Platinum is 21+ for men, 18+ for women). All the listings are in my (Fritz's) piece on Where to Go if You're Under 21.
Where to go depends on the music you like. For trance, it's Insomnia. International, it's Diva (at Tuscana West). The Goth and undead head for the Meeting Place.
Let us know how it goes.
20008:
Luv eavesdropping on the chat, but now have a question: where can one get good Moroccan food without the kitschy, belly-dancing scene a la Marrakesh ?
p.s. Popped into Ray's the Steaks for a burger recently. Yum-Yum. Definitely get the guacamole!!
The Going Out Gurus: 20008, hello it's Alexa. Glad to hear you enjoyed Ray's. I'm a bit late weighing in today, so I'm just going to throw out this suggestion for A Taste of Morocco in Arlington. Good value, no kitsch.
D.C.:
Hi Alexa and Gang,
I went to Ray's The Steaks and it was "the best Jerry, the best". As I had read your original blurb on it a couple weeks ago, I substituted the mashed potatoes (top notch) for the potato salad (not a fan of the mustard base) with my burger (also top notch) and it was a fantastic meal. Ray's (his nom de guerre) stock went higher when he said he was coming out with a new burger, "the eleven" (ala the amp in Spinal Tap). Key Lime pie is a must get.
My friend was impressed I had sussed this place out, but I wasn't a weasel and gave credit to the chat.
Thanks for a spot-on recommendation!
The Going Out Gurus: Happy to do it, DC.
Chili-man in DC:
Any word on this Chili cookoff downtown on Saturday? I think one of the radio stations is sponsoring it. Are these typically a good time or what??
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Chili-man, this is Joe. The DC 101 Chili Cook-off is indeed on Saturday. From 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Lots of bands are playing (Soul Asylum, Puddle of Mudd, Remy Zero, Something Corporate, Pete Yorn, Sugarcult, 2 Skinnee J's. ) Anyone out there want to comment on whether this event is normally a good time? I'm staying out of it.
WDC:
Dearest Gurus,
I was reading the Mark Gauvreau Judge article "Stuck in the '80s: A Gen-X Epiphany," and I was wondering
how do you stand re: the "oppressive tyranny to the cult of the cutting edge." How do you maintain your hipness, under such "grueling" conditions of loud music and tiresome tots?
You are my heroes.
The Going Out Gurus: Well, for starters, we Gurus are tots: All of us are 13. Really. I (Jen) am violating several child labor laws right now by even answering your question.
Actually, I think a person doesn't automatically stop being hip as they get older, as the author of the story implied. If you continue to be interested in pop culture, as we Gurus are, you don't have to worry about the "oppressive tyranny." We do work under grueling conditions, though ... our computers actually don't work unless we run on a hamster-like wheel while we type.
Wash DC:
Hi Gurus! I hope you can help with this one - I'm submitting early. I'd like to rent a classic car for the day to suprise a friend on his birthday. I'm thinking cruising, and then a summer picnic. Do you know of anywhere that will rent classic cars for the day? Many thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C., Anne here. If you want to go supa-classy, call Alabaster's Limousines of London (703/643-2678) and ask if their 1959 Rolls is available. Check this story on renting a fancy car for more tips. Alexa also has some suggestions for you on picnic supplies and locations.
Rockville, MD:
Need good happy hours in both Rockville and Bethesda, please. We have a diverse group of people and someplace with food specials is preferred. Thanks for your help.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Rockville. This is Fritz. Bethesda is easy. Maura and I were at Grillfish last Friday and it's fabulous. Half-price cocktails and food. They make one of the best French Martinis I've had in a while, and the appetizers on the bar menu are huge. The fried calamari and buffalo shrimp were favorites. Montgomery's Grille is the best option when weather is nice -- microbrews are only $3.
As for Rockville, well, we're not finding much to recommend. Gaithersburg, well, there's Mrs. O'Leary's and the Rio Grande. Those aren't too far out, are they?
Readers?
Capitol Hill :
Do you know of anywhere in DC that offers Spanish language lessons?
The Going Out Gurus: There are many mas places then you might guess, Capital Hill. This is Kate and I think you should call the school of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it's closest to you (L'Enfant Plaza Metro). they offer many language classes at all levels, and occassionally intensive workshops -- in the spirit of champagne immersion, Fritz is taking French immersion Bastille weekend and not a minute too soon. Also, you might call the Mexican Cultural Institute and ask for some advice. Community colleges are another route too. Any one out there have a rec?
Bethesda, Md.:
Was thinking of taking my bro on the Spy Tour for his birthday (he's DOD and loves that stuff) but, yikes! $55 a pop is kind of steep! Think it's worth it? Or any other suggestions on what we could do that would fit in with the same theme?
Thanks gurus!
Have a great weekend!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. Maura again. I'll admit $55 is steep, but if he's really into that stuff, it's a lot of fun. If you're willing to go a bit out of your way, I think you can find an equally fun, less pricey route. The National Cryptologic Museum and DEA Museum are quirky spots for undercover tours. The latter is only open weekdays. Some good news: The International Spy Museum opens downtown July 19.
Charm City Chick:
Just a comment re:Preakness...no hard liquor is permitted. No glass containers, either. Fritz's suggestion of Natty Boh was right on the money. & as far as attire, the most important thing is, ladies, wear a top that you can take off easily. -evil grin-
See y'all in the infield!
~Native Baltimoron
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, CCC. We got 24 cans of Boh for $6 at some little liquor store, and I wish we'd gotten two. As for the tops... no comment.
Wine Tasting:
Oh yes, I give my hearty hearty recommendation to the wine tasting in Virginia the first weekend in June. I went last year and it was so fun. Tons of wine, bread, cheese and music! Bring a blanket and hang out in the sun! A great time!
The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, it's really social.
Preakness again:
Thanks for the advice! So is it chill enough that I can wear my flip flops? I've found Natty Lite tastes best when I'm wearing them.
Off the the races it is!
The Going Out Gurus: Go barefoot if that makes Natty taste good. (What about Schaeffer's?)
Logan Circle:
Platinum has different age barriers for men and women? 18 for the girls, 21 for the guys? How can this be legal?
The Going Out Gurus: Easy. Club owners are allowed to set whatever age limits they want, provided they're not racist or otherwise overtly discriminatory. Remember, there's no law that prevents 16-year-olds from going to any bar in Adams Morgan. It's up to the bar owner to set limits.
I (Fritz) have asked other club owners - not Abdul - who have similar 18/21 policies, and their take is that 18-year-old guys cause problems, while 18-year-old girls are nice to have around. Now, I won't weigh in on the merits of that argument, but if you'd like to start suing clubs, Seth Hurowitz of the 9:30 Club will testify on your behalf.
Van Ness:
I'm on a softball team, and I wanted to get in a little hitting practice at a batting cage. Do you know of any in the area that have softballs in addition to baseballs?
The Going Out Gurus: Try calling around to some of these before heading. I just talked to the guy at Woody's ("Woody" himself presumeably) and he said to "come on down, we've got what you need." - Rhome
Arlington, VA:
Submitting early because of a meeting.
What's the scoop on tourist attractions on Memorial Day? Are they all open? I have the 'rents coming in from out of town that weekend and they want to do the usual first time DC tourist stuff. Will they have any luck (besides the bad kind when it comes to crowds)?
Thanks...
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington. Good news for you: Everything is open (Smithsonian, National Gallery, monuments). The Phillips Collection is closed, but they're closed Mondays anyway. If the weather holds up, I (Maura) you might enjoy that Sunday night's National Memorial Day Concert at the U.S. Capitol -- a wonderful way to experience Washington. Have fun.
Eastern Market, Washington, D.C.:
Is it very wrong that I -- straight white gal -- had the time of my life last weekend at Zigfield's/Secrets?
The Going Out Gurus: No.
Platinum:
Am I the only one who thinks it's creepy that platinum is 21 for guys and 18 for girls?
The Going Out Gurus: No.
belle and sebastian:
I think it was so much nicer once Stuart asked everyone to sit down. I enjoyed myself much more when I was sitting. Its a super place to see a show, and the aisles are always cleared in those places for fire reasons. Plus when you're sitting, you don't have to try to look cool. or twirl your shirt around like a mad man.
The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, I sort of agree. Though I still tried to look cool when I was sitting.
Water Activities?:
Friend coming to town over memorial day and we are looking to do some rafting/canoeing/guided tours/etc. Any ideas? We have been kayaking on the Potomac (off the canal in G-town) and are not looking to go to Harper's Ferry- too far.... Thanks for your help!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, this is Anne, and in the crystal waters of the Potomac, I see many aquatic activities in your future. Here's couple schools that offer runs on the Potomac: Canoe Adventures, Outer Quest and Potomac Paddlesports. For more options: pick up a Post tomorrow and turn to page 61 of the Weekend section.
Half Right:
Oh c'mon! I'll bet my old 45 of "Dancing
Queen" that you folks who did not like
"Mamma Mia" also did not spend much of
your youth rollerskating to the songs (or in
the case of the older people at the
theatre, actually jiving to them at the
disco). Mamma Mia is about NOSTALGIA.
That's the plot, that's the allure, that's the
whole point. If you don't have fond and
embarrasing memories involving
yourself, an ABBA hit, a mirror, and a fake
microphone you aren't the intended
audience. You have to HAVE a memory to
relive it. That said, "Knowing me, Knowing
You" was excruciating.
The Going Out Gurus: Do you know who you're talking to? I (Jen) rut like a pathetic pig in '70s and '80s nostalgia. That sentimental allure was what made me want to see "Mamma Mia," but, in my opinion, at least until the encore, I was let down. But a lot of other people enjoyed it, and if you did, I am glad.
Brookland:
Hi Gurus! Happy Thursday!
Do you know of a good place to eat that is moderately priced that could accomodate smokers? My boyfriend's parents are in town and we never know any places that are smoker-friendly and suitable for a couple in their 50's. Thanks much!
The Going Out Gurus: Brookland, is that the area, you are wanting to be in? If so, smoking is allowed at Island Jim's. Tell me a bit more about your preferences. Do you need to be actually smoking at the table, or will a restaurant bar do?
Bethesda, MD:
I want to accelerate my friendship with a woman in her late 20's into a relationship. Looking for a great outdoorsy group event (in the city is best) that I could invite her to on Sunday afternoon/late evening?
The Going Out Gurus: Like your style Bethesda. This is Kate. If it's nice out, you guys could avoid going all the way downtown and hit the Feria de Sevilla at Fort Reno Park. Or what about the beeuteefull gardens at Dumbarton Oaks. It's pay for play, but well worth it. Pro: High probability of luring her behind a rose bush. Another pro: You can grab a bite along upper Wisconsin afterwards in the garden at Busara. There's Tastes of Arlington and Wheaton too. In addition to food and music, the latter features the oddly exciting "Jaws of Life" demo, can that not fail to impress?
If the weather turns crap, I say you all head for the cinema and catch "About A Boy" -- which is, let's be frank, the theme of the afternoon, right? I saw it last night and laughed like a hyena. But I wasn't trying to impress anyone.
virginia:
The chili cook-off is terrible. Long beer lines, the chili is gone by noon and the bathrooms, well there aren't enough.
The Going Out Gurus: Well a chili cookoff without enough bathrooms could be a problem. Hopefully, they'll work that out this year.
Alexandria, VA:
After all the volume spoken here about Reef and Topaz and Rouge, I tried all of them on for size last week. Expensive and cold is my take. Whatever happened to great spots like DC Space and 15 Minute Club and the Crowbar (is it really coming back?)?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) haven't heard about the Return of the Crowbar. That'd be rad. I'll check with Steve, the former owner, who's now involved with Revolution Coffee Cafe in Herndon.
As for the other bars being cold and expensive, well, okay. We'll disagree on that. My take? Upscale lounges are trendy now, the way the Andelusian Dog, 15 Min., Insect and Crow were a few years ago. I don't think that one style of club is any better than the other.
Have you tried the Pharmacy Bar? Polly's? Dives like Dietle's or the Quarry House or even El Paraiso, a cool little Mexican place on 14th?
Anyone else have an opinion because I was too young to (legally) visit a few of these places?
20002:
Hi Gurus--
Have you heard anything about a Feria de Sevilla this Sunday? I know it's up by the Tenley metro, but do you have any info on times?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: You betcha, 20002: Feria de Savilla is at Fort Reno Park on Sunday from noon to 6. Come back next week and tell us how the festival's paella and sangria are.
Dupont B&S Fan Again:
For the record, I thought twirly-shirt guy was amusing.
And the fans at last night's concert didn't have to try to look cool. They are cool. They have good taste in music. They want to dance. They sit at computers all day feeling old and dull; all they want to do is rock out once in a while, is that so wrong?
But to each her own.
The Going Out Gurus: It's not so wrong. Everybody's cool.
Silver Spring, MD:
Ok, so is there any theater that will be showing the new Hugh Grant movie, "About a Boy" and NOT also showing the new "Star Wars" movie this weekend? I'd like to see it without having to fight my way through the hordes of Star Wars fans.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Silver Spring, Jen here. Try Mazza Gallerie, AMC Courthouse or White Flint -- all of them have Hugh, not Hayden, on screen this weekend.
DC:
The accoustics sounded great at DAR??
Why wasn't "Hell Freezes Over" on the front page of the Post this morning?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi DC, this is Joe and actually the last few times I've seen shows at DAR the sound has been pretty good. I think somehow they've improved the acoustics. Where you're sitting also makes a difference.
rosslyn:
I'm looking for a cool place to study for my GRE's. I have questions like: what coffeeshops are best for hitting the books? Which local university library is the newest, freshest, shiniest? Moderate noise does not bother me. Globalization of coffee products does. Of course, late hours are a must. A tough assignment for the Gurus, but I assure you, there's a direct correlation between your helping me and my getting into grad school. Please help me, Gurus, for the sake of my future!!!
The Going Out Gurus: Unless things have changed drastically in the 5 years I've been out of school *shiver*, McKeldin Library at U of MD is a spot where you can wander into the stacks, grab a desk, and end up feeling like the world outside your peripheral vision has ceased to exist. You can get eerily focused in there, it's so quiet. 1st & 2nd floor study rooms are open 24 hours during this time of year (finals time) - Rhome
Reston, VA:
Hey there GOG's...I always tune in to read the chats...but now I am in need of some advice and you all always give great ideas!
My sister and her boyfriend (both 19) are coming into town for the weekend, and we are looking for something to do. Neither one are into the club/dance scene so we are looking for something more low-key. I have only lived here for a few months, so I don't know alot about the area. Are there any cool exhibits that are open late (like past 7) at the Smithsonian or any "unique to DC" places to take them? I know this is kind of a broad question, but any ideas are much appreciated. Thanks!!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Reston. This is Maura. The Canal Square galleries of Georgetown are open late this Friday with new shows. Check out the latest Fraser Gallery, Old Glory or Prospects Pizza for a bite to eat.
Kalorama, Washington, D.C.:
I just got the famed first-time homeowner D.C. tax credit and would like to spend a chunk of change on decorating my apartment. Can you recommend unique home decoration shops in the area (i.e.,I do not want my apartment to look like a Pottery Barn catalogue), and/or classes or other resources for newbie decorators? I'm shooting for an artsy, comfortable look. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here, neighbor. Man, are you lucky. Do you know that Miss Pixie takes requests and will call you when stuff she thinks you might love comes in -- remember: ask nicely. Also, on Thursday evenings, all the new stuff at Goodwood appears upstairs. Have you combed Go Mama Go! yet? Additionally drop into Vega or hit the auctions at Weschlers on Tuesdays.
Partygirl in Virginia:
Hey GOG's!
How is the new VIP club? Some gal pals and I are thinking of going to try it out on Friday night, and we want to know what to expect. Is it worth the trip or would a Saturday night at Dream serve us better?
Thanks. You guys are the BEST!
The Going Out Gurus: Okay. I (Fritz) am going to try to answer this questions with two caveats: It's hard to know how Fridays at VIP are going to be, because they haven't started yet - the grand opening is this Friday - but I did go last Saturday. Also, I've never been to Dream on a Saturday night. I much prefer the crowd/music on Fridays. (Mmmmm. Buffet.)
So if you can bear with me, I'm going to encourage you to try VIP. It's gonna be packed, yes, but it's downtown, has more levels/space than Dream (all four floors are open to everyone, even though each has a separate VIP room), and should be a blast. And again, it's half a block from the Metro and near a few garages, so parking/transportation will be easier.
If you're worried about crowd/music, I'm guessing they're pretty much identical. Come back next week and let us know what happened.
alexandria va:
Is GLOW/Insomnia still popular (i.e. long lines on Saturday nights)? I've been a few times and each time the line seemed worse. Haven't been in a while and was wondering. Cheers.
The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, the lines can get pretty bad if you show up late. When I (Fritz) was writing that Weekend dance club story at the end of March, we showed up early to talk to the owner, and the line was huge. He said there's usually a 20-30 minute wait before they even open the doors. That might be a slight exageration, but it doesn't seem to move quickly.
Boba:
I am desperately seeking Boba-- aka bubble drinks. They're tea or juice drinks with chewy tapioca balls in them. I know I read an article in the Post about these some time back, but I can't seem to find it. I tried Teaism, but they were out. Where can I find bubble drinks-- preferably in DC or near the metro in the 'burbs?
The Going Out Gurus: In the Eden Center in Falls Church there are a few places to find these drinks, though the Eden Center isn't very Metro convenient, so perhaps this isn't much help. Anyway, Boba, thumb yourself a ride and head to the Vietnamese-French bakery called Catina, or in the same location Song Que at 6773 Wilson Blvd. (703-536-7900).
gaithersburg, md:
Good afternoon!
Have any of you ever been to Roosevelt's Island? What's there? Are there walking trails? Is it worth the trip?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Gaithersburg. I (Maura) revisited Roosevelt Island not too long ago and think it has it's charms. The trails/paths aren't at all difficult. They're a bit overrun, but have lovely views. It doesn't take long to walk the island and I think the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial at its center is one of the city's somewhat-hidden treasures. It's also a great spot for a picnic. Enjoy.
HockeyLover in MD:
I heard that weekend roller hockey is played on the streets in front of the White House (where it's blocked off from traffic). Any truth to this rumor, and if so, what are the details? Is it organized, pick-up, etc.
The Going Out Gurus: I can tell you that I've been in the area on weekends and seen folks playing. I don't think you can have organized play (ie: league play or something) on public property that isn't being rented out. I don't play hockey though, so why don't you go check it out for yourself? That's how I got into the soccer games in my neighborhood. - Rhome
Logan Circle:
Hi,
OK I was at the Belle & Sebastian show too. I agree that the sit-down atmopshere worked better for the audience and the band, given it's music (and despite the occasional die-hard fan who prefers to do the trippy spinny dance and block your view).
But even though Sleater-Kinney was an -opening- act, I felt a little lame sitting and sandwiched in movie theater seats while riot grrrl grunge was playing.
I generally like the set-up of the DAR, but I don't think it's possible to compromise the set up (and fire code) for dancing or milling about. Either avoid the place, or accept that you'll have to feel a little older sitting down to rock music.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Logan Circle. I agree. And I also agree about Sleater Kinney's set. That is a band that should never play in an auditorium with seats. That said, I'm not sure why so few fans were there to watch their set. They were excellent.
Party Animals!?:
I'm thrilled to see four in my Gallery Place neighborhood. When will the artists info be available? Where can I find out where to find others?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Anne here. Last weekend, I saw a slew of the Party Animals along Pennsylvania Avenue and in the Gallery Place area. Has anyone else had other sightings? We're regularly in touch with the exhibit organizers, so we'll keep you posted on the official list of artists and where you can find the sculptures as soon as that info is available. In the meantime, have you played our new video game inspired by the exhibit?
Arlington:
Any outdoor/rooftop bars in Dupont?
The Going Out Gurus: I'm actually working on that right now, Arlington. This is Fritz, and I have a series of stories about outdoor bars; I've done Adams Morgan, Wilson Blvd. , Bethesda and Georgetown so far. Dupont is next on the list. A quick list would include the deck at Gazuza, the rooftops at Lauriol and Wazuri (mmmm. Island drinks.), the huge sidewalk area at Foodbar DC, the smaller patio at Fox and Hounds, the "underground" patio at Buffalo Billiards ... there are a few others, too. But that's a start.
And Biddy Mulligan's just got approval for a 124-person outdoor patio.
20008:
Hi - Any ideas for a fun Saturday afternoon outing for me, my friend and her 4-month old daughter? They're calling for rain - so the zoo is out. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: This is Kate, 2000 and 8. What about going out for tea. I'm sure your friend would love to get out of the house and talk. Here is a list of favorites from Weekend's Eve Zibert. Why don't you ring Ching Ching Cha and see if they'll hold one of their "booths" for you. On a raised dias there are low tables with floor pillows. You take off your shoes and curl up with a pot of Chinese tea. Let the staff walk you through the art of pouring. Honestly, I found it a bit intimadating to ask how the first time, but our waiter was really sweet, and my tea, smokey and exotic. And the baby is welcome to sleep in her stroller or coo back at you. It's a quiet, smoke-free spot that's a real find in G'town. If you prefer the idea of English tea, what the Madison Hotel offers is as high as the Ritz, the Jefferson, etc. but not in price.
Washington, DC:
Hi there: Going to the Corcoran for the Jackie O exhibit next Monday. Any suggestions for lunch right around there? Any thoughts would be most appreciated....Love the chats!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. Despite my earlier posting, I (Maura) do hope you enjoy the show. As for lunch, Teaism on H, is my fave, cheap eat nearby. Other possibilities are Breadline or Cafe Soleil.
Fairfax, va:
There is a wine festival this weekend during the Haymarket Spring Festival. Only $5 to get in. Not as many wineries as the one in the Plains, but not bad for a small town.
The Going Out Gurus: Not at all, Fairfax. Thanks.
Petworth:
Ooooh! Don't forget to send the decorating person to Home Rule, on 14th St. Such a cool place!
My newly redone, fabulously deco black/white/silver and purple bathroom owes MUCH to Home Rule!
The Going Out Gurus: Agreed!
Bethesda, Md:
Where has all the big band swing gone? It used to be every night. Is it a dead fad?
The Going Out Gurus: Not entirely dead, Bethesda. You can still find dancing (almost) every night of the week. I (Fritz) do note the increasing dearth of live swing in town, though. You've still got Fridays at Chevy Chase Ballroom and the Fitness Club of Fairfax (aka Zoots), Saturdays at Glen Echo (three times a month, in the bumper car pavillion, though) and sometimes in Greenbelt, Wednesdays at Felix for Sinatra Night and one Thursday a month at Timpano. I miss the Tom Cunningham Orchestra's regular gigs at America.
There are DJ nights Sun-Thurs, though.
Arlington, VA:
In one of this week's earlier online discussions, a chatter mentioned having gone strawberry picking. I think this sounds like a lot of fun, but don't know where to go. Any suggestions?? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, no worries. Take your pick from this list.
It's killing me!:
Ages ago you guys had us try to guess which state doesn't have a DC street named after it. As far as I know, the answer never got posted. And I'm haunted! Can you tell me? Please?
The Going Out Gurus: Can't you read our entire archive?
DC:
RE: differing age minimums. As an atty. (who works for a DC agency), I suspect very strongly that they would not hold up. The DC Human Rights Act is pretty broad and would almost definitely cover these types of establishments -- especially ones given the public benefit of liquor licenses.
The previous poster is right, as well. It IS creepy.
The Going Out Gurus: For years, we've been hearing the same thing about how bars should be open to everyone, regardless of age, and how bars that say "over 23" are illegal, etc. And they're still there. I was told it was discretionary.
For Boba:
You can get tapioca ball drinks at Wok 'n Roll on H Street near 6th (Chinatown), as well as decent Chinese food and cheap sushi.
The Going Out Gurus: Boba fete!
Dupont, DC:
Gurus, I need your help. I have a third date tomorrow night. He wants me to decide what to do. I had originally thought dinner and then walking by the monuments at night, but I've heard that it will storm. We are looking for something romantic and maybe a bit out of the ordinary. One of us is a vegetarian and we are mid-20s/early 30s.
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Dupont, why don't you stick close to the Mall area and go to one of the places around 7th and 8th streets: Jaleo, Cafe Atlantico, etc. Then, if it doesn't storm you can take a walk. Righty-o?
FFX, VA:
Hi,
Are there any good pool halls close to Herndon or Reston? Need a good first date place in that area, since I'm rather unfamiliar with it (I'm 23 if it matters)
Thanx!
The Going Out Gurus: Quick answer: Carpool. They have a branch in Herndon. Cool place. Young(ish) crowd.
Washington, DC:
Looking for hip hop dance lessons. I have no rhythm but love to dance. Where can I go?
The Going Out Gurus: Head over to Joe of Motion and the Dance Place.
Arlington, VA:
Hiya Gurus, so where is YOUR number one choice for your after-work happy hours?!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington, this is Joe. Here are the instant poll results: Fritz says "I like em all. Or $1 beers at Rock Bottom Brewery in Bethesda." Anne says "taco night (Friday) at the Press Club." Maura says "None of my hours are happy." Kate says "I don't go to happy hours." Alexa says "What's a happy hour?" Jen says "My house." Rhome says "I never go to any." Are you sensing a trend yet?
Fairfax, Va.:
Gurus, saw your suggestion for the British pub in Baltimore. Any good suggestions closer to the Fairfax/D.C. area that has good fish and chips? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Fairfax. A quick survey around the office reveals our favorite chippies are Johnny's Half Shell, Mackey's Public House, Fado and the Royal Mile Pub. None of them have great bitter, though, which is essential.
Washington DC:
Hey Going Out Gurus, question about those party animal statutes. The story in the Post stated that Metro stations have maps to the locations of all of the party animals. Every station manager I've asked has no clue what I'm talking about. Do any of the chatters know what's the deal here?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. This is Anne, and the deal is that the Party Animals exhibit is not adhering to the schedule publicized at the exhibit's "opening" on April 23. We're in touch regularly with the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the exhibit's organizers, and we're about as excited as you are to receive the info on artists and animals' locations. As soon as we have news, we will share it with you. We promise.
Native Baltimoron:
Re: Preakness question - Flip-flops might be overdressed for the infield. Picture a fraternity party/mardi gras party of about 50,000 people.
And for those that don't know, Natty Boh = National Bohemian Beer.
The Going Out Gurus: Thar ya goes, hon.
Star Wars?:
I heard it wasn't worth the hype. Do you agree, Jen?
The Going Out Gurus: Here is what I think about "Episode II": It's better than "Phantom Menace," but not as good as "Spider-Man." The plot gets a bit burdensome at certain points, and I could swear some of the romantic dialogue between Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman was borrowed directly from old episodes of "90210." However, Yoda is a total stallion, and there are enough decent action sequences to satisfy most "Star Wars" fans. In other words, it's certainly watchable, but not fantastic. Personally, I still miss Han Solo. You can't beat lines like "Laugh it up, fuzzball."
Petworth:
I admit it, the stuck in the 80's article rather hit home for me. I try to stay hip and cool, and... well, I guess I'm just getting older.
It also made me think of places now gone. I still miss happy hour at Cafe Petito (with the Antipasto bar!), drinking at Mr Egan's, hanging out at Odd's Cafe (did I just peg myself as a GW alum?), happy hours at the Hotel Dupont (and the fabulous view from the glass walled lobby), burgers at Boss Shepherds, ice cream sundaes at Swensen's... SO many places!
Some, I've found new great places to replace, so that I can toast the old places from a fabu new bar. Some, well, I have yet to find anything like the White Sangria they used to have at La Fonda. And I have yet to find a real sit down ice cream parlor in town. and happy hour in DC seems to be a dead art form - no place I've found yet with that great (and FREE!!!) food and reduced price drinks both.
Ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: This is starting to sound like a Bob Levey column. Thanks, Petworth.
Anywhere but DAR:
Like it needs to be repeated, but DAR is the worst place to see live music that you would actually love to move your body to. Case in point -- I saw the Buena Vista Social Club in Jan 2001 there, and the same, sit down, don't block the aisle attittude prevailed. How can you not be allowed to dance to the Buena Vista Social Club?
The Warner Theatre is almost as bad. I spent most of one of the Prince shows avoiding the ushers ... what fun!
The Going Out Gurus: Well, there you have it. If you want to dance, keep away from auditoriums.
Bethesda, MD:
In response to the comment about Grillfish having the best French Martinis...I have sampled many a French Martini and my fav comes from Jason, a bartender at Chrome in Bethesda, that introduced me to them...yummy!! Everyone should go there and check it out!
The Going Out Gurus: Okay, Bethesda. I (Fritz) have never been very impressed with the drinks at Chrome. Maybe I'll try again.
22203:
Hi Gurus!
Love the chats! My friend went to Paper Moon a couple months ago, and they had lost their liquor license. Do they have it back? And is Paper Moon a fun place? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Yes. And yes, if you like a very upscale international crowd dancing to salsa and world music. It's kinda pricey, though.
batting cages:
I have lived in this area my entire life and have never seen a batting cage that DIDN'T have softball. (Caveat: It's something that I do occasionally, so I'm not a "real" expert.)
The Going Out Gurus: Well, I didn't want to assume, because you know what happens when you do that. Guru's get assaulted on the streets, O the horror!
Arlington:
Of course, U of MD library isn't a "coffeshop." You might try Common Grounds near Clarendon.
The Going Out Gurus: Yup. I tend not to drink coffee, but when they asked about university libraries I did remember a little something about that.
DC:
I'm meeting friends for happy hour tomorrow. We want to be outside to enjoy the lovely weather. Is there any great patio spot that isn't packed (like Carpool inevitably will be)? Preferably in Shirlington or Clarendon-type area.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, DC. This is Fritz. If you're going to Shirlington, I like Cap City Brewing Company. In Clarendon, try to make the Clarendon Ballroom's rooftop deck or the Clarendon Grill's back patio. Iota has a cool little back patio that most people don't know about. Or you can hit the open-air Sandbar at Whitlow's and get in some foosball (admittedly, that part of the bar is covered).
Bethesda, MD:
Hi there - I saw a mention of the Revolution coffee lounge in another inquiry. Thought that puppy closed shop a while ago - Am I mistaken?
The Going Out Gurus: I just tried to call them and the robotic Verizon lady told me that the number could not receive calls at this time. Time to hit the streets and dig up the scoop. - Rhome
B&S show:
I was there, too and you're right, it was fantastic. But my complaint wasn't about the security: It's about the complete lack of A/C. We were dying up on the mezzanine half-way through, which definitely cut down on our enjoyment. And I KNOW DAR has A/C because I had my graduation there in the dog days of May and it was perfectly fine then.
The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, it was a little warm. Are you listening DAR??
please post this shameless plug:
come check out Perpetual Motion at Santa Rosa/XVIII Point... Saturday night, doors open at 10 pm... in Adams Morgan.
3rd time for this event-- DJs spinning, local art, dance... very cool event. $5 gets you in and benefits the Acadmey of Hope (they provide adult computer training, GED study).
Come check it out and help a good cause! more info at www.adamsmorganinfo.org/pm
The Going Out Gurus: Okay. It is for a good cause and all.
Washington, DC:
We are heading to see Luna tomorrow at the 9:30 Club. Do you have any suggestions for nearby eats that we will be able to get into and out of in time for the show? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Kuna comes before Luna, silly.
afforadable wine classes:
The most affordable wine class, for relative beginners, is through the Washington Wine Academy. The ABCs of Wine, with Post columnist Michael Franz, is $36, and you get a little discount if you sign up for the second class in the series at the same time. http://www.washingtonwineacademy.com
The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) have taken this class and highly recommend it. Highly.
bubble tea:
There is a new place in College Park (Metro accessible) that serves this kind of tea. And from the story they have on the place in the window, it looks like there is one somewhere in Montgomery County, too (Rockville or Bethesda, I think). It's called Ten Rhen. Hope this helps!
The Going Out Gurus: More tea advice.
Bubble Tea:
Bubble tea can be found at Phillip's Cafe on 14th Street (between H and I).
The Going Out Gurus: And more...
Near Baltimore:
Going out with someone now for just a few short weeks...looking for somewhere to go that's unusual but fun, without spending much money, or fighting crowds on a Friday night. Cheap (but good) food, something fun...can you guys help me? I think he might be on the cheap side, so if I have to pay, I don't want to spend too much on him but i want to have fun (before I dump him!).
The Going Out Gurus: Near Baltimore? What about country dancing at Cancun Cantina?
Bethesda, Maryland:
Did a new bar recently open at the Washington Harbour?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Bethesda. The Harbour Club is more restaurant than bar, but they're open for late-night cocktails. Just mind the dress code.
DC:
where is a good place for people in high twenties to mid thirties who love to go techno dancing? something in the rave party style but for older crowd...am I asking for the impossible? BTW, you guys rock!
The Going Out Gurus: Rave party style? Are glowsticks and pacifiers optional or required for you and your mature cohorts? I don't know where the older folk go to get their techno fix, but if you're looking for some different four-to-the-floor action you can try many of the popular house music spots around the city like Red or the Sanctuary, which has actually moved from Vicki's to Bintunami. That information is forthcoming. I've heard that the Afterlife is a mature event too, been meaning to check it out. Every 3rd Saturday at Brookland Studios/Studio H, 3305 8th St NE. - Rhome
Planning a going-away, DC:
My roommate is soon to move to NYC, and I am hoping to plan a Saturday night on the town that is pure D.C. Any suggestions of restaurants, bars, etc. that are as D.C. as you can get?
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here, D.C. What about a massive martini in the cigar room at The Caucus Room and then cheap cheeseburgers at the Tune Inn. What about crabs at Bethesda Crab House or sitting outside at the Quarterdeck for the same?
Cleveland Park:
What's a French Martini??
The Going Out Gurus: Depends on who's making it. I (Fritz) have seen at least two drinks called a French Martini, but the only thing they have in common is Chambord. The one at Grillfish uses Grand Mariner and fruit juice (orange, I think). Another recipe has Chambord, vodka and pineapple juice.
Washington, D.C.:
What is your take on the new Club VIP? Does it really live up to its upscale billing or is it headed down the same wayword path as Platinum?
The Going Out Gurus: Click here for Eric Brace's take on the place. I was there last Sat. with him and agree with most of his review. I'm really more curious about the Friday night crowd than anything else... but I don't think it will lose its luster anytime soon.
The Going Out Gurus:
As always, it's been enlightening, but now we have to depart. Thanks for all the questions. We'll see you next Thursday, when we'll discuss Memorial Day weekend plans and other good stuff. Until then, please keep your light sabers inside the vehicle at all times.
