Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, April 18, 2002; 1 p.m. EST

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EST, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: "Don't you like when the winter's gone and all of a sudden it starts gettin' warm. The trees and the grass start lookin' fresh and the sun and the sky be lookin' their best."

With these words from the Diabolical Biz Markie, I'd like to set this one off in honor of our premature summer. Wazuri is my first tip today. Kojo from Bukom has a new venture across from Lauriol Plaza with great african food, more of his signature drinks, and a rooftop deck. For my outdoorsy folk, our Parks and Gardens has what you need. And don't forget to cop your free dairy goodness on Monday.

Oh, I'm Rhome by the way. Anne, Alexa, Joe-ski Love, Kate, Maura, and Jen Boogie are all at the ready too. Let us begin before Fritz nods off into an allergy medecine stupor.

Apologies for my Reef busting: I gave it another chance. Not my favorite bar, but maybe the carpet does grow on you.

I did want to give some big old props to Toka! What a fabulous bar/atmosphere/drinks! Service isn't great, but how can you be unhappy in a bar like that?

The Going Out Gurus: No apologies necessary. Everyone’s allowed to have a first impression. In fact, mine (Fritz) often changes between first and third (or fourth) visits. As for Toka, I love it – especially when I can grab a seat at the bar – but do know some people who don’t. Some say it feels like a finished basement. Others don’t like the sleek, light barstools. (That’s a complaint I share.) And I’ve heard that service is slow, especially on weekends. But if that’s the worst you can say about a place, they’re doing a good job.

Crab Cake: God bless the Market Lunch in Eastern Market. I had the best crabcake in a VERY long time this weekend there. So good!

The Going Out Gurus: Mmmm... crustaceans.

Madam's Organ!: Heading to Madam's Organ on Sat night with some gal pals. Can you give me an idea of the clientele -- clubbish? Urban prof? I am 29 -- not too old, am I?

Other alternatives for the area would be appreciated. Have been to Cities and a place across the street, but still am unfamiliar with the Adams Morgan scene! Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: The Madam’s clientele is hardly clubbish. A good part of the crowd in the 20s (college and post-grad) and drinking Rolling Rock, but there plenty of thirtysomethings there to hear the blues on the weekend. Dress is very casual. If it gets too crowded by the main bar, head upstairs for the rooftop deck, which should be nice this weekend.

Washington, D.C.: Can you make a suggestion for a good Saturday brunch spot that will accomodate a table of 20 for a birthday party? We definitely want to shy away from anyplace with a stuffy atmosphere and we will require good mimosas.

The Going Out Gurus: A place that definitely isn't stuffy, Washington, and that definitely has an excellent Saturday (Latin dim sum) brunch is Cafe Atlantico. I bet, with some notice, they could organize a large table for you. Who else can recommend something nice for Saturday?

Silver Spring, Md.: As my friend and I were leaving Penang after dinner on Friday night, we were puzzled to find a DJ setting up in the bar/lounge. It didn't seem like the right place for club music, especially with no dance floor. Any idea what they're thinking?

The Going Out Gurus: Rhome here. Fridays at Penang are called Travelling Without Moving and feature Adrian Loving, who has manned decks at ESL and Visions among other places. I'll be checking it out for the first time this Friday and I expect that even with no dance floor, the vibe will fit the spot. More lounge-y type acid jazz and soul tunes rather than pounding dance music, hence the Jamiroquai reference in the name.

Washington, D.C.: I'm looking for suggestions on some non-traditional things to do with my Dad while he's in town this weekend -- he's been to D.C. a few times before and has done all the typical touristy stuff (monuments, museums, Mount Vernon, etc.), so he wants to do something different this time. Any recommendations for daytime or evening events/outings? (short day trips are also a possiblity). Thank you!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. This is Maura. Maybe your Dad would like a look at Washington from a different angle. Check with the SpyDrive Tour and see if there are any openings or -- weather permitting -- take a walk with D.C. Heritage Tours (Georgetown in the Civil War is one of this week's possibilities). If you're keen to avoid downtown D.C. this weekend, try out the sites of the Shenandoah Valley or the charms of Chestertown. Check out these Escapes for more day trips.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Going to the Inner Harbor, Baltimore, tomorrow, just us girls, want to know if there is a great restaurant we should go to...or some great place we ought to check out.
I trust you have something in mind we ought to try. Thanks in advance for your assitance!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Dupont. Maura here. I think of the Inner Harbor as home to lots of chains that you could find in D.C. too. If you're game to head over to Fells Point give Peter's Inn a try. In Federal Hill, maybe Ten-O-Six. The Wild Mushroom (also a short drive away from the Inner Harbor) never fails. For downtown bars you might try the Good Love Bar, Havana Club or Cohibar. Have fun.

I need your help -- bad: Hiya gurus, I find myself in a quandry and you guys are the only ones that I think could help me. A friend of mine is celebrating a birthday this weekend and she really wants to go to a strip club this weekend. Now if you were to ask me where to see women dance around naked I could name you at least three places without thinking about it but guys dancing around naked? all I can think of is wet, and, well, that's not exactly what we're looking for. Also, if such places exist where naked men dance around for straight women, is there a rule against allowing men into the club? Thanks a bunch Gurus, you guys are great.

The Going Out Gurus: It always come back to the hardcore nudity, doesn't it? This is Jen, and I must confess that I am no expert on dancing naked men. (Naked men who don't dance? Well, that's another story.) However, I suggest that you take a look at this bachelorette feature and scroll down to the part about strip clubs. In addition to a reference to Wet, we also mention The Hangar Club, which may be your best bet, though it requires a bit of a journey to Camp Springs. It's also entirely possible there are other strip clubs in Baltimore - maybe some of our readers have suggestions? As far as men being barred from such clubs, I'm guessing that doesn't happen because I don't think a club owner could legally (or at least not in good conscience) ban someone from an establishment based solely on their gender. I'm sure some places are mostly populated by females, though, so maybe our readers can chime in. Do keep the comments tasteful, people. After all, the Internet isn't an appropriate place for pornographic discussion.

Washington, D.C.: Just wanted to thank all of you for your suggestions on where to get a smoothie a couple of weeks ago. Now, how about a beer smoothie? Where can I find a cheap happy hour tonight in the downtown/midtown area? Ambience or elegance is not a factor. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: A beer smoothie? That is just sick. This is Fritz, and if you want cheap beer and don't worry about ambience, I say you should hit Lucky Bar's happy hour. Cheap bottles and cheap pitchers all night long. (Most specials end at 8, Bud is $2 'til close!) And I always recommend Cafe Citron's happy hour - cheap mojitos and sangria.

Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: Gurus,

I need some help, badly. I am looking for a nice restaurant to take my girlfried for our final college ball together. It could be any type of cuisine but preferably a place with some vegitarian options. I'd also like it to be very romantic, as this is a special evening for us. Got any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: My (Alexa's) pick for you, (Romeo?) would be Neyla. It's downright sexy in there and being Mediterranean has quite a few options for vegetarians. Otherwise, scan our list of most romantic places.

McLean, Va.: Where are some good spots to catch the NHL playoffs?

The Going Out Gurus: Mullet or not, the top pick has to be Bugsy's, a hockey-centric sports bar owned by former Cap Bryan Watson. How can you go wrong when they have The Great One's shirt behind the bar?

The ESPN Zone will have games on its huge screen. I (Fritz) haven't been to Langway's in ages, but I imagine they'll have everything, despite the Caps not being in the picture.

Other picks from readers?

Falls Church, Va.: I was trying to thank the folks with Luteran suggestions last week, when my browser did something snarky; but ...

Thank you very much.

Bummed to find out that the Jazz Vesper's were just one week only, but the elca site is quite helpful and I have always tended toward that classic-sacred sound when going in for some churching.

The other thing my snarky browser dumped were some vineyard suggestions. I second any recommendation of Linden, which is nearby, has a nice view from their chateaux style tasting room. They have elected to make smaller quantities of better wine, but still have a fun with it. Do the cellar tasting, if you can, or pick berries or apples depending on the season. Naked Mountain is nearby for a contrast.

If you want to hit a bunch at once, Loudoun County has a “wine-trail.” Willowcroft is nicely located in a barn, with a mountain view and hiking trails, Tarara has a trail down to the river and I think was doing some balloon-ride thing this weekend.

Has anyone tried any of the Maryland vineyards? Especially those north of B-more? I think we may be running out of places in the Old Dominion?

Virginia Wines

Linden Vineyards

The Loudoun County Wine Trail

The Going Out Gurus: We're putting a gold star on your chart, Helpful Reader. So class, how about those Maryland vineyards?

Fairfax, Va.: Hi gurus! You guys rock the house!

Question: me and a friend are doing D.C. this Saturday from about 8-3. Dilemma? Money situation is zilch. Ideas and/or suggestions? We were thiking about museums, maybe the planetarium or something cool like that. Thanks yo!

The Going Out Gurus: Fairfax, not to worry. There's plenty to do. I (Maura) just typed "free" into the entertainment guid searchbox and found this. If you're game for museums, the new planetarium show, "Infinity Express", is a blast, but will put you back $7.50. Check out the three great -- free -- shows at the Hirshhorn next door: Neto, Westermann and Metropolis. Or catch the last weeks of Xu Bing at the Sackler or the new show at the Holocaust Museum, Arthur Szyk (both free as well).

Crystal City, Va.: Sorry, what's that about The Reef? Jason Fix, a terrific bartender one street over at Cashion's, has moved over there and showed me around before it opened, but I'd love to hear comments on the finished product.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Crystal City. You can read our review (and a few from readers) here, and once you've been, add your own comments.

Arlington, Va.: For Dupont Circle -- Inner Harbor bound:

Definitely head over to Little Italy -- at the very least, pick up a cannoli from Vacarro's. For food, both Sabatino's and Chipparelli's are good choices. It's just a short walk from the I.H. (and much closer than Fells Point) and in recent years, the walk has gotten much less shady. Enjoy, and have a salad with house dressing for me if you go to Sabs.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Arlington. Little Italy is a fab idea. Yum.

Salsa lessons: Happy Thursday to all of you gurus! I know there are a couple of nightclubs in D.C. that give free salsa lessons and was wondering which club had the best lessons and/or really worth checking out? I'm leaning toward Lucky Bar on Monday nights but I'm not sure. I'd love any help/suggestions!

The Going Out Gurus: Rhome here. There's a lot going on these days for budding and expert dancers alike. I hear that Clarendon Grill is a hot spot now. Habana Village is always a mainstay, and there's Wednesday night at Zanzibar too.

Arlington, Va.: I'm graduating law school and looking for a good celebration restaurant. The only places I can think of are steakhouses (Caucus Room is the front-runner), I'll have grandparents with me, so a broader menu might be better. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, it's Alexa and I've been thinking that your grandparents might enjoy Oceanaire. It'll be moody for them in there, bringing to mind -- as it intends to -- a 1930's liner. The food's big, mostly surf, and the drinks are too. It's a glamour puss.

Washington, D.C.: Help! Want to take boyfriend for jazz after dinner at Ten Penh. Where should we go? I was looking more for a bar with jazz, rather than a "show," but will go with the latter if you have something good in mind!

You guys are great!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey WDC, this is Joe. If you're going out tonight, why don't you catch Thad Wilson's Big Band at HR-57 on 14th Street. There's nothing fancy about this place, but it's fun and authentic.

Washington, D.C.: OK, I know this will let the world know what a dork I really am, but I have a very serious question: Two potential blockbuster movies are opening within two weeks of each other next month ("Spider Man" and the new "Star Wars"), and I really want to see both play at the Uptown. Is there any word on which movie will play there?

The Going Out Gurus: We've actually been discussing this in the office, so either a. you're not a dork or b. we're all dorks. You make the call.

In either case, I (Jen) just called the Uptown to confirm what I have suspected. And here is the deal (drum roll, please): "Spider-Man" will not play there. (But if you win our "Spider-Man" contest, you could get lucky enough to see an advance screening at the Uptown.) "Star Wars: Episode II" will show at the Uptown, unless something drastically freaky happens. So there's your answer. Jedis, start lining up.

Arlington, Va.: I'm new to the area and several of my co-workers keep talking about this "huge" outdoor party called "Swine on the Vine" sponsored by the Capital Club of Washington, D.C. Do you know anything about it or who the "Capital Club" is? I have been told it's sort of a pseudo fraternity for older guys in the area. What's the deal?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. The Capital Club is a social club that has exactly 100 members. Invitations to join are offered to the select exactly once per year by the board of governors. (Imagine the Masons with cooler cocktail parties.)

Swine on the Vine is indeed a huge outdoor BBQ party, held at the Potomac Polo Club's grounds in Poolesville, Md. Suggested attire: "Gents: BBQ Casual. Ladies: Tight Gloria Vanderbilt Jeans."

We'll have a record up soon - haven't heard back from the organizers yet. For more info, visit http://www.capital-club.com/event.html.

Bethesda, Md.: I was wondering if anyone out there knew of a several-week -long exercise program -- six, nine, 12, or something along those lines. I already belong to a gym, but it'd be great to join a program for a set of time to blast off some pounds. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Bethesda, this is Anne, and I find that I'm more inclined to exercise when it accompanies socializing: meeting up regularly with a sports group/class such as, say, salsa dancing. The Montgomery County Road Runners Club, which I belong to, has several training programs, and holds various group runs almost every day of the week. There are also lots of training programs that prepare you for one big exercise event and help raise money for charity -- playing volleyball for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, cycling for leukemia research, and the March of Dimes and MS walks are a few examples that spring to mind.

The other Post resource I think of is the Lean Plate Club feature every Tuesday in the Post's Health section, with its daily challenge chart that reminds you to drink water, eat veggies and sleep. Sort of like a personal trainer/nutritionist -- for 35 cents.

Dupont, Washington, D.C.: Hi, I have always been interested in getting dressed up and going to those fancy shmancy events for charities and other causes but they are so darn expensive! Do you know of any black tie/fancy events that a couple could go to without dropping a chunk of change?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Dupont. All dressed up and no place to go. Well, you could try some of these young members groups at area museums. Most have annual black tie events. I (Maura) am afraid you just missed the Corcoran's, but try giving the others a call. These are by no means free, but they can run a bit cheaper than many other black tie charity events. Keep in mind that next Saturday Society Ties holds its Casino Night to help support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Tickets are $85 in advance. Register here to win tickets through washingtonpost.com (yes, that means free tickets). Good luck.

Peter's Inn: Is a great call, but make sure they know to bring cash. No credit cards. They may also want to get there early. It can fill up quickly. If it is too full, they can walk two blocks to Henninger's.

The Going Out Gurus: Good tips. Thanks PI.

Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: Do you recommend getting tickets to see the Film Fest before or at the theater on the day of? Do tickets sell out quickly before? Which movies are most in demand?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Cap Hill, this is Kate and I hope I can help everyone who's curious about Filmfest DC.

I would not wait until the day of/evening of to get tickets. Many of the venues are small and the screenings for the most part are one offs. For example, while the demand for "Hi Tereska," a black and white Polish film about reform school kids might seem small, it's a big deal to local Poles, fans of Krzysztof Kieslowski and people willing to take a chance.

Most of what I consider "must see" films will be coming to D.C. eventually -- but sometimes the fun of a festival is seeing movies unmediated by trailers or critics. Consider "The Piano Teacher" (France); "The Fast Runner" (Canada); Possible Loves (Brazil) or tonight's "Rain" from New Zealand. You might get a kick from the q and a sessions with filmmakers. Documentarian Arthur Hiller will be at the DCJCC on Wednesday, and he's got some stories to tell. And the nut case responsible for reprinting "A Fortunate Son," the unauthorized biography of Dubya, will be on hand at "Horns and Halos." There are workshops too. This is fun stuff, pick a few.

Alexandria, Va.: To the person looking for off-the-beaten-path stuff to do with her/his dad this weekend:

Try the National Arboretum. People I know who've lived here for years don't even know where it is, so I guess it qualifies as off the beaten path. Plus the azaleas are in bloom and they have a hill literally covered in them -- should be a sight to see. And the bonsai gardens are super nifty, too.

The Going Out Gurus: Right Alexandria. The Arboretum is a wonder.

Washington, D.C.: Do you reccomend the Smithsonian's jazz masters orchestra tribute to Ella Fitzgerald? And where can I get tickets?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello WDC, this is Joe and I can't personally recommend this show, but our great jazz freelancer Alan Greenblatt made it one of his picks for April. You can blame him if you don't like, but I'm sure it'll be good. Information about tickets for this show and many others is available on our TICKETplace page.

Arlington, Va.: Have you tried the new restaurant, Boulevard WoodGrill in Clarendon on the corner of Wilson Boulevard and Filmore? It has good modern American food cooked on a wood grill (obviously). I had great grilled salmon and asparagus there last weekend. And it has a hip atmosphere. In other new restaurants, I tried Grille 88 on 18th Street (which you said you didn't like) for brunch. I found the food very good and enjoyed the live jazz piano.

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, you're all over the place. Yes, I (Alexa) was at the Boulevard Wood Grill recently too and thought it was fine. Not desparately thrilling, but nice. I did enjoy those fries mind you -- hand cut and served up with roasted garlic, rosemary and raclette. And no, our Kate Gibbs didn't think much of 88.

The Hill, Washington, D.C.: Other than Cashion's, what is a great place for a Sunday brunch? Nice tables, casual atmosphere, etc. Oh, I'm looking in D.C.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Oh Hill, come now. There are plenty of places besides good old Cashion's. I (Alexa) say look into Geoff's (great tables under trees), Melrose, the Tabard.

Baltimore, Md.: Can you dance at HR57? My boyfriend and I love dancing to big bands and want to get out tonight.

The Going Out Gurus: You can indeed dance at HR-57, Baltimore, but it's tight. The "designated" dance floor has room for maybe 10 people. Dancing or sitting and listening, Thad Lewis' big band is one of the best jazz orchestras in town.

Reston, Va.: Hey gurus! Love you all! Do you guys have your pictures up anywhere on the site? I want to attach a face to each of you!

The Going Out Gurus: HI Reston, this is Joe and to see our faces just visit your local post office. Our pictures are plastered on the wall. We've finally achieved our goal of being Most Wanted.

Washington, D.C.: Hey guys --

You're the greatest and I really hope you can help me out with this -- the folks are coming to visit this weekend and we definitely want to avoid all the protests and stuff going on this weekend. but, that leads to the question of what can we do during the day that doesn't involve Mall activities? I was thinking about the botanical gardens -- any thoughts? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: You are wise to avoid the mall this weekend. The Botanical Gardens sounds like a nice alternative - I (Jen) also recommend that you take a look at our festive spring planner, which contains information about various events, particularly of an outdoor nature. If your parents like Shakespeare, for example, you might want to take them to his birthday party at the Folger. A leisurely walk through Rock Creek or an afternoon of browsing and eating in Georgetown might be well spent, too.

Re: Baltimore weekend: Just a Baltimorean's two cents for the girls heading my way:

You MUST go to Little Italy for dinner. That section of town lies between Inner Harbor and Fells Point, so you can get some touristy stuff out of the way before dinner and head over to the bars afterwards.

Any restaurant you choose in Little Italy is authentic and therefore delicious. But for a fairly inexpensive evening, try Sabatino's or Amicci's. And save room for dessert! Vaccaro's is absolutely divine, and the line is always out the door. Try their cannolis or gelato, I promise it's worth the wait.

The Going Out Gurus: Another vote for Vaccaro's and more good ideas.

Downtown DC: Hi guys- love your chats! I follow them every week.

Quick question: My birthday is coming up in the next few weeks. I want to do something quiet and low key with some friends. Any suggestions?
Oh by the way- I should mention that I will be 39 weeks pregnant at that point. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Kate here, downtown and it sounds like you might like something that's adults only -- while you still can. Have you thought about a Middle Eastern feast at sexy Neyla or either Levantes or any of the Lebanese Taverna? All have juices on the menu, cool dips and platters to share.

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: The weather's getting warm (okay, downright steamy!), and I want to get outside, hike a bit, etc. Any suggestions for weekend activities that don't involve a car? I'm dependent on Metro and my own two feet. Looking for hiking and/or biking trails, boating opportunities, and anything else fun in the sun you all can recommend. Thanks so much -- I love you all!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Adams Morgan. One of our chatters from last week reminded us about a story on Metro-and-bus-accessible hiking, mostly in Greenbelt park. We also like Roosevelt Island, pedal boats on the Tidal Basin, Rock Creek Park and the Mount Vernon Trail, the Capital Crescent Trail --- sheesh, this reminds me why I (Anne) like D.C. so much. It's so easy to get to green spaces.

Arlington, Va.: Can you recommend a non-chain (not Starbucks or Cosi) place to go have coffee with a cool decor and atmosphere, preferably in Arlington or Old Town Alexandria (near a Metro stop.) I remember going to a place near the Clarendon Metro once, but can't remember the name or exact location. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington, it's Alexa. Hot Shotz is the place to go in Clarendon -- a great little place run by an excellent chap called Greg who is all biz when it comes to the coffee he brews. A year or so ago, he even hosted a wedding at his shop so delighted were a couple of his customers. In Old Town, there's Misha's, of course.

Falls Church, Va.: Hey -- I love your chats. I noticed that you have a new this week in music section on the Web site. As a former indie rock fan who now works a 9-5 job, I find it hard to find out about new bands that are playing around here and your music Web site only really lists descriptions for some of the bigger names. Is this new this week in music section something that you will regularly do? Any suggestions on how to find out about the groups that are playing around town?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Joe's new column is indeed quite nice and will be running regularly. As for lesser known names, you couldn't have tossed me (Rhome) a softer underhand pitch than this. I'm always looking for a chance to plug our Local MP3 site. You can read about and then listen to the best of this area's local musicians, even watch video of them. Make sure you read Eric Brace's column in the Weekend section too, he often profiles local bands. I'd also recommend that you just hang out at spots like Velvet Lounge and the Black Cat. They always have someone interesting playing.

Baltimore: Ahh, I love when you talk about my town. Henninger's is an excellent choice - what a great place

The Going Out Gurus: We aim to please, Charmer.

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: What's the scene like at Wazuri? Rhome, could you give us a run-down? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry to disappoint you, AM, but this is Fritz, and I'm writing about Wazuri because Rhome hasn't been yet. I spent a while at Wazuri last night and had a good time. The bar area is very small - most of the space is a restaurant - but the outdoor patio is nice and large. Friendly crowd (largely African) and delicious African food.

Kojo Davis (formerly of Bukom Cafe, and December 2001's Bartender of the Month) is the owner and bartender, and his tropical drinks are always delicious. I can't remember the name, but one involved coconut rum, pineapple juice and blue curacao. The mojitos are tasty as well.

Baltimore: Oh please, please don't send anyone to Sabatino's. The will be quite displeased if you do and I think my town is great. Send them up to the Helmand instead

The Going Out Gurus: Another vote for the Helmand.

Baltimore, MD: Just FYI - the Wild Mushroom in Baltimore closed about a year ago. The place that replaced it is nowhere near as good. DO check out Peter's Inn in Fells Point.

The Going Out Gurus: My (Maura's bad), Baltimore. I'm sad to hear it's gone, but glad you concur on Peter's Inn.

Logan Circle, Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus,

Today's so hot I might finally go and take my ex-girlfriend's advice to go jump in a lake. I remember a while ago you had put together a list of area watering holes, small lakes etc. Is that still around?

The Going Out Gurus: You betcha, Logan. Here's your story on lakes in Maryland and Virginia. I (Anne) found it in the Travel section, but we'll make sure you can search for it through the Entertainment Guide, too. Closer by, though, is Six Flags America's Paradise Island waterpark. It's open weekends in April, about a month before most other waterparks open.

Parkfairfax, VA: Where to meet literate, 20s/30s, informed, deep, beautiful women?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, I'm in the middle of a chat right now.

No More Guapo's!: Hi there! Rockville resident here. We go to Guapo's at the Rio every Friday and need a new place. Somewhere fun and cool, with an outdoors area would be nice. Sorta limited to Montgomery County, but your suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, the Guapo's at the Rio. So many memories. All right, tecnically I (Jen) have only been there twice, but I still have many memories.

Well, you could always try hanging at one of the establishments on the other side of the man-made Rio lake. I'm not a big fan of the food at Joe's Crab Shack, but the drinks are reasonable - and who doesn't love it when the wait staff comes out and performs "Y.M.C.A."? If you're willing to venture to Bethesda, your options widen somewhat. You can try Tia Queta, which has nice rooftop dining, or places like Austin Grill or Jaleo on the busy Woodmont/Bethesda Ave. strip. (Very crowded, but good for people watching.) Or, if you want ax place that's fun and cheap, consider my old fave, California Tortilla. The burritos rule, they play lots of old '80s tunes, there's outdoor seating and the food and drinks are cheap. (There's one in Rockville, next to Regal Cinemas, too.)

Re. Little Italy: Both Sabatino's and Chipparelli's have valet service since parking can be a problem in the area. There's a public parking garage a block or so away from the restaurants (not towards Fells Point) Chipparelli's can be quite popular weekend nights so make sure you have a reservation. I love their house salad (comes with the entrees), though you will have onion/garlic breath afterward.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for tossing that out.

Washington, DC: Hey GURUS!!

Do you know anything about the new restaurant/club "Aqua" that just opened up?

Thanks!! you guys (and gals) are the best!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Washington. This is Fritz. Aqua is located at 1818 New York Avenue NE, a little further out than Dream. The grand opening was a few weeks ago, and I know they're doing salsa a few nights a week. I've called a few times and left messages trying to get more info, but haven't heard back yet. We'll have a full review on the site as soon as we can.

cool coffee joint: Though I'm reluctant to post, for fear of it being overrun ... but I'm a huge fan of St. Elmo's in Del Ray. It's about 5 blocks north of the Braddock Road metro. They also usually have free, live music a few days a week.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes.

Rosslyn, Va.: Whatever happened to the Party Animals exhibit that was supposed to pop-up all over D.C. on April 1? Did they decide to scrap it or is it coming later? Thanks Gurus, you guys rock!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Rosslyn. Maura here. Good news. The Party Animals festivities start Tuesday with an unveiling at Freedom Plaza by Mayor Williams. They'll start popping up around town in the next two weeks. Be sure to write your own reader review of this animal parade on our site.

Lovelorn in Washington, DC: Do you know the scoop on CNN, "the Point" anchor Anderson Cooper or fill-in Bill Hemmer. They are dreamy.... Are they single? Gay? Live in DC or NY? Where would one cross paths with the likes of CNN anchors??

The Going Out Gurus: Lovelorn, it's Kate. I don't have much on Cooper but this: He's a fox. We sat next to each other in the British Airways lounge at Kennedy about six months ago and when presented with food court options at 6 a.m. he chooses juice, a slice (plain) and an apple. Possible shoe fetish as he was sporting extremely flashy kicks. Can you telecommute from Jamaica, NY?

Alexandria, Va.: The person going to Baltimore should go to Joy America Cafe atop the American Visionary Art Museum on the south side of the harbor. Truly a great restaurant! Web site.

The Going Out Gurus: Joy America is fantastic, but on the pricey side, no?

Laurel, MD: For Falls Church, VA. There's a great opportunity to check out some lesser known bands comming up this weekend. WAMA (washington area music something) is going on in DC Friday and Saturday. I know that Rubin Kinkaid and a couple other area bands are going to be there.

The Going Out Gurus: D'oh!! I can't believe I fronted on this, and I'm actually in it. Yes, this will an all you can eat buffet of local music, cheap too. Don't miss it.

Swelling in Washington, D.C.: Gurus --

Question: By the time my birthday rolls around in a couple weeks, I'll be 39 weeks pregnant. Do you all have any suggestions on some low-key places to go to dinner with a few friends that is not too expensive? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Low-key and not too expensive really doesn't help me (Alexa) much. Can you say what kind of food you like, Swelly?

Virginia hockey wife: Hello Gurus,

I will be in Wheaton, Md., Sunday evening to watch my husband's hockey team play at the Wheaton Ice Rink. (Aren't you glad I shared that with you?) Anyway, do you know of any places near the Wheaton Ice Rink to go for drinks and appetizers? Obviously neither my husband nor I have spent any time in Wheaton!

Thank you.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, VHW. Our favorite bar - okay, my favorite bar - in Wheaton is the Royal Mile Pub. It's a British/Scottish pub with good grub and lots of beers and single malt scotches. Another option is the Stained Glass Pub, popular with softball teams, which has good pizza.

For Baltimore Bound: Also stop by Howl at the Moon. It's a piano bar and it's a lot of fun.

The Going Out Gurus: Howl yes, FBB.

Last resort, Washington, D.C.: Hi almighty gurus,

This is not your ordinary bacholorette party. I have done my homework and did several washingtonpost.com and general Web searches, but now I seek your advice. I am planning the pary for a group of ladies and we want to get a hotel suite with a kitchen to do some pre-partying and post-partying with our lovely bride-to-be. A pool in the hotel (outside is fine, it will be June) would be ideal as well. We don't need help on the bar ideas, just where to stay. Prefereably in D.C. near Adams Morgan or Dupont.

I have looked at some places online, but thought you guys or other chatters might have some ideas.

We've done One Washington Circle before so we are looking for someplace new.

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have been searching through our hotel listings, and can't seem to find a spot that offers all three elements (kitchen, pool, location) you're seeking. Readers, help?

Brunch: I'm a fan of Banana Cafe's latin-inspired brunch. $16.25 includes unlimited mimosas. Not sure whether it's served on Saturdays though - check first. Also check your bill -- they've tried to slip in a few extra charges on us on more than one occasion.

The Going Out Gurus: Aren't we glad you said Banana again.

Longing for New York City: What places are like New York City here in D.C.? I'm getting homesick and all the places that I've been to thus far seem to by trying to be New York City but falling way short. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Washington is not New York City. Period. Where have you been disappointed?

Rockville MD: To no more Guapos...
Try Timpanos! It's way cool!!

The Going Out Gurus: Another suggestion for the Rio defectors. Thanks.

D.C.: I know it's late into the show but hopefully you can get to my question: Do you guys know of any all you can drink mimosa sunday brunches? One that isn't too expensive that is?

The Going Out Gurus: DC, it's Alexa. One of the nicest brunches around is the one to be had at the Bombay Club. Unlimited mimosas, live piano and an Indian buffet.

Nekkid boys: Now, it's mostly gay men, but I have seen more than one bachelorette party there -- but try Ziegfield's/Secrets. Drag show in the front (hope you don't mind Miss Ella calling you "fish")/nekkid boys in the back. Kinda seedy in the back though, don't touch anything. Hehehe.

-- drg, again.

The Going Out Gurus: A suggestion for our strip searchers - thanks.

Fitness Programs: You can't forget the Sergeants Program. (www.sarge.com). It's a forced workout. You show up at a park at some ungodly hour in the morning to be ridiculed while doing pushups and are grilled about what you ate the day before. I've even heard if you don't show up, they call you and abuse you over the phone (don't know if that's true, though.)

The Going Out Gurus: Attention!

For the politicos: For people looking for something different to do, CNN has started filming "Crossfire" with Begala, Tucker Carlson, James Carville, and Al Novak at GW's campus. Tickets are free (e-mail: cnn@gwu.edu), the show films every week day from 7-8, and it's something a little out of the ordinary to do on a hum-drum night. Thought I'd throw that out there.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, FTP, and I (Maura) can say James Carville really is better looking in person.

Wash, DC: Is there anywhere in DC to catch happy hour where you can sit down outside and watch the boats go by? Even later in the evening, but where you aren't required to buy dinner and can lounge over a few drinks. Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Wash. You don't need to buy dinner to drink waterside at Tony and Joe's or the Riverside Grill, both located at Washington Harbour in Georgetown. I (Fritz) also really like the deck at Zanzibar on the Waterfront, but it doesn't get going until after happy hour.

Anderson Cooper: I don't know if he lives here or not, but I saw him having brunch at Lauriol last fall.

The Going Out Gurus: Cooper Scooper.

Washington, D.C. mama: Hey there. Used to live in Atlanta and know the scoop on Bill Hemmer. Single. Not gay. Never has time for dates but really swell guy. Sorry it's not juicier.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for readint the chat, Bill.

Alexandria, Va.: Hi Gurus! Besides making a sandwich or feeding the elephants, where would any of you plan a date with a girl nicknamed Peanut? Thanks and have a great Thursday.

The Going Out Gurus: Kate here, Alex. Lucky you. How's about going for burgers (or their too often overlooked dogs) at the Five Guys nearest you: it's close to you and you are welcome to shell as many of their peanuts as you wait in line. No matter how often they sweep, their floors are always covered in bits. If that's not an invitation to unpeel ... If you'd like a slightly more refined place for drinks, <"http://eg.washingtonpost.com/profile/796877/?&flavor_id=5&context=">Town & Country offers top of the line mixed nuts in silver bowls - and couches. Someone named Peanuts sounds bananas. Why don't you try one of Fritz's recent rec's and go to Toka or Reef? Better yet, sit upstairs at the Majestic Lounge's No. 9 wine bar and find out why?

Nokesville, Va.: I am going with my girlfriend and two mutual friends to Ford's Theater on Friday. They want to know if the dress is casual. Also I need to pick out a restraunt that will be open after the play, and is close. Thank you.

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) think you'll see people in various types of dress: some very formal, some not-so-formal. I suggest dressing in the medium nice range: a skirt and blouse for women and nice pants and a button-down for men. You pretty much can't go wrong that way.
As far as restaurants, consider Butterfield 9 or Cafe Atlantico.

Alexandria, Va: Where is the closest beach -- and how long does it take to get there? Thinking about taking a day trip on Saturday.

The Going Out Gurus: Alexandria, it's Anne, and I think Sandy Point State Park, right next to the Bay Bridge, is the closest place where you can actually swim. But here's some more ideas on reaching a nearby beach.

Re: Maryland vineyards: My opinion? There's not much point, as the wines are not very good. At all. They pale in comparison to Virginia wines.

The Going Out Gurus: Oooohh..... Where are my Marylanders? Are you going to take that lying down?

Rockville, Md.: Hello there. One quick question. I crave for a a good British pub food like fish and chips; bangers and mash. Are there any British pubs in D.C.?

Sure there are lots of Irish pubs, but I can't seem to find one British pub.

Many thanks!

Cheers!

The Going Out Gurus: Rockville, your best option is in Baltimore, where you'll find real ale, bangers and mash, ploughman's sandwiches and great fish and chips at the Wharf Rat.

I (Fritz) also like the Royal Mile Pub, which is more Scottish than English, but has good fish and chips, British beers and the largest collection of single malt scotches in the area.

Frasier Crane: I know this isn't a Dr. Phil chatroom, but New York City is going to be dissapointed anywhere she goes with that attitude.

The Going Out Gurus: So true, Dr. Crane. So true.

Washington, D.C., baby!: Rhome.

Don't know where you're gettin' your info. from, dawg, but State of the Union is not closing down. I was just there and the DJ got on and said it was a bad rumor. I also got in touch with somewhere there via e-mail and they told me the same thing.

Alright? Cool.

The Going Out Gurus: I was talking with folks that work there and they were saying that increasing rent and commercial development on that block were pushing them out. They were even scouting out new locations for the club. It's been weeks since then (and our last show there) and they've been still having dj's on the weekends, although no more live music. Something isn't adding up so I guess I need to investigate further. Who was spinning? Oso-Fresh? Bill Source?

Alexandria, Va.: St. Elmo's on Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria isn't very close to a Metro stop -- although there's a St. Elmo's branch on King Street near the King Street Metro. In Arlington, Common Ground(s?) near GMU is pretty good.

The Going Out Gurus: More on java in VA...

Maryland wine response by Marylander: It's true, sadly

The Going Out Gurus: I was just trying to pick a fight. It's sleepy up here.

Re: Coffeeshop in Arlington: Java Shack (near Mr. Tire off of Wilson in Clarendon) is awesome, with outside seats too. Common Grounds is the new, larger one that on Wilson just west of Clarendon. Haven't tried it, but it looks cool.

The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) was just by Java Shack yesterday, thinking "Damn, I really miss the desserts from the (former occupant) Sugar Shack." Anyway, Common Grounds is nice and large, but I prefer the coffee drinks at Java Shack.

state of the union girl...: Source was spinning. I was there about 2 weeks ago... and there was a live show there. It was Friday night, I think. Oh wait... maybe it was saturday.

I will be so sad if State closes. It is by far the best hot box in DC.

The Going Out Gurus: What in the world is going on? I can't take this emotional roller coaster. What band was playing? I have to have a talk with young Billy Source about this. I just saw him too and he didn't mention any turn of events with State.

Re: Maryland hater: There's no need to take that elitist attidute, Virginia. I love my not-too-sweet sangria from Boordy Vineyards, located northeast of Baltimore. And what's more, they had the most adorable Valentine's Day soiree where we were able to drink, not just taste, anything we liked.

The Going Out Gurus: The gauntlet has been picked up. Go Maryland, get busy!

Dumb Question: Where is Lauriol Plaza?

The Going Out Gurus: right here.

Ice Cream!: My new favorite ice cream shop is in Takoma Park, Md. Summer Delights has soft serve, their own ice cream made in small batches and Hersheys. Everything I've had there is wonderful, pair it with a visit to the Farmers Market on Sundays (10-2) and you're all set.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for sharing.

Girl named Peanut: Made you say 'banana'

The Going Out Gurus: Orange you clever!

Washington, DC: For the girl thinking about visiting the Botanic Gardens this weekend- it is right near the Capitol and was closed last Monday due to the protest, so it could close again if this weekend's protests are near there. It is worth a trip, though, on peaceful days.

The Going Out Gurus: It's worth a call beforehand. Thanks, reader.

I wanna be a Guru: For the person heading up to the Inner Harbor, steer clear of the I.H. chains and head north up Charles to the Helmend. GOOD Afghan food! Afterwards, you can get cocktails at the Ruby Lounge, coffee at Donna's, or great ales at the Brewer's Art.

As for the question about a hotel near Adams Morgan, try the Carlyle Suites on New Hampshire Ave. No pool, but the suites do have little kitchens and it isn't far to the 18th St. strip.

How'd my audition go?

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for these tips. And your audition went fine - but don't call us, we'll call you.

Hotels with Kitchens: Residence Inn by Marriott. There are two locations in D.C. proper, several in suburban Virginia and Maryland. The two in D.C. are in Thomas Circle on Vermont Avenue and Dupont Cirle on P Street. Go to Marriott's Web site for further room descriptions and explanations!

The Going Out Gurus: More hotel tips - thanks for these.

Hyattsville, Md.: Greetings Gurus!

Without actually going to the water, any ideas for a good place in town to -pretend- you're near it? Perhaps someplace with some hot steamed spicy shrimp to nibble on while downing an ice-cold beer?

Question and thanks way in advance!

The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) like the Annapolis Grill downtown, although it's not a shade on, say, Cantler's.

Baltimore: I'm sorry, I know there are too many posts on this already but Chiaparelli's is god-awful. The salad is good, true, but that's it. There are very few good ones in that area, try Ceasar's Den if you must. Not in Little Italy, Sotto Sopra is the best for Italian, but quite pricey

The Going Out Gurus: More Charm City.

Fairlington, VA: where to find illiterate, 20s/30s, shallow, ugly males?

The Going Out Gurus: Too easy. Too, too easy.

Washington, D.C.: For the music fan who is looking for indie rock -- try www.pollstar.com -- type in "District of Columbia" and it will give you an incredibly complete list of bands and shows that are coming to the area -- it lists everything from the Kennedy Center to the Birchmere to Metro Cafe.

The Going Out Gurus: Rock on.

U Street: How much do you guys get paid to shill for Lauriol Plaza? I don't think a week has gone by without you mentioning them. The place just isn't that great. It's not even particularly good. I suppose if your idea of a fun evening involves waiting in line for an hour for the privelege of eating mediocre food in an echo chamber... El Tamarindo up the street has better food, albeit minus the firetrap crowding.

The Going Out Gurus: Head across the street to Wazuri. Sure, the roof may be lower, but food and drinks are better. The line at LP is ridiculous. And the drinks are overpriced. I (Fritz) could go on and on ...

Outdoor Question: Okay, not sure if you can help with this or not, but since you guys know everything, I thought I would give it a shot! My roommate and I looked last night to buy some new patio furniture, but everything was SO expensive!!! Any idea where we can find a set (table, four chairs, hopefully an umbrella) for not too much moola! We are poor!

The Going Out Gurus: That sounds like a question for the Staying In Gurus. Different chat.

Re: Hiking and the great outdoors: There is a program through the Sierra Club called MWROP (metropolitan washingon regional outigns program) that has a few hikes a weekend all over the region. Great way to see AT, SNP, etc., and meet new people. The Web site.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, trail blazer.

Washington, D.C.: What about jazz on Saturday night? Any recs for that?

The Going Out Gurus: Tune your radio to WAMU (88.5) at 7 p.m. for Hot Jazz Saturday Night. Or read our guide to the month's best jazz.

Northern Virginia: I continue my search for a good bar with an outdoor TV.

Just want to sit outside, enjoy the air, enjoy a brew, enjoy the game (without driving to the yards).

The Going Out Gurus: Try Island Jim's Crab Shack and Tiki Bar. You can put your feet in the sand while you watch the big game.

Re: where to meet women?: Maybe I can help..."Where to meet literate, 20s/30s, informed, deep, beautiful women? "

They are at the same places where the literate 20/30, informed, deep, beautiful men are....so if you are not meeting them where you are....

(haha,, sorry)

The Going Out Gurus: Someone got busted!

The Going Out Gurus: With air-kisses, pounds, daps and even golf waves we must bid you all adieu. Come back next week, same Guru time, same Guru channel.

Drag Bingo: Is it still at Chaos? Or has it moved to Cobalt? I've been hearing two different things and thought I'd hear from the experts. BTW-- Love your show, babe.

The Going Out Gurus: Cobalt. Tuesdays. Be there or be square.
