Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, March 28, 2002; 1 p.m. EST

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EST, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Chomping at the bit today, Got Planners? Take a bite of our Easter Brunch guide. You can also graze our Cherry Blossom planner and Easter and Passover activities. The gurus have gathered -- Alexa, Anne, Kate, Rhome, Joe, Jen and myself (that's Maura) and we're ready to take your queries. As always, we like those savvy suggestions too. Dig in.

Silver Spring, Md.: Hey guys:

I'm a gal who loves basketball and I'm looking for a place to watch the Terps game on Saturday night. I'd like to go some place that is not a meat market and that I can also get some good grub. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, basketball gal. I (Jen) will be anxiously (and I do mean anxiously) watching the Terps on Saturday night as well. For starters, take a look at Fritz's lovely guide to March Madness, which lists a number of bars for game-watching. If you happen to be a card-carrying Maryland Alumni Association or Terrapin Club member, you can watch the big game on a jumbotron at Cole Field House, which sounds like a great option to me. If you don't want to stray too far from home, you might consider going to Chatters in Bethesda. Normally a hotel sports bar isn't my cup of tea, but they have great TVs and a generally pro-Terps crowd that really gets into the game. Whatever you do, enjoy and keep your fingers crossed that Lonny and Juan take the Terps to the national championship.

Washington, D.C.: Hiya guys,

Do you know of any organizations in the area that celebrate Dingus Day?

For those not in-the-know, Dingus day is a Polish-American holiday, celebrated the day after easter (April 1 this year) and features plenty of polka, food, and the tradition of women finding men they like and hitting them with pussywillows. (The men get to spray water or perfume on the ladies.)

It was a big holiday in my hometown, and I don't hear anything about it here.

Any groups inside the beltway celebrate it?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi D.C. I've heard of Pulaski Day, but I (Maura)am stumped on Dingus Day. Any posters know of activities in town?

Annapolis, Md.: Easter Sunrise Service.

We have always attended the Easter service at the Naval Academy Chapel (which is beautiful), but this year we'd like to attend the sunrise service at Arlington that we've heard about in the past. Can you give us info We've looked everywhere -- including Arlington's Web site which doesn't have much in the way of seasonal events.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Annapolis, Anne here. The sunrise service at Arlington National Cemeterybegins at 6:30 a.m., but the staff there recommends you arrive at 5:30 a.m. That's when the shuttle will begin taking people from the main entrance/Visitors Center to the amphitheater, where the service will be held. The service, the shuttle and parking are all free; remember that Metro doesn't start running until 8 a.m. The amphitheater seats 4,000, and it often fills early. Seating is first-come, first-served.

Bethesda, Md.: Gurus --

Happy Thursday!

You guys always come through for me, so maybe you can help with this one: I want to join a book club. You'd think this wouldn't be complicated, but it is turning out to be. All I want is a book club, people around my age (20-something) people around my area -- Bethesda, NNW? Suggestions? From anyone?

Thanks.
Have great weekends!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Bethesda. My (Jen's) first thought is to ask your friends and co-workers if one of them is in a book club you could join, but you've probably already tried that, right? Barring that, I would turn to some of the great writing resources in our area. Politics & Prose hosts several book groups based on genre (history, public affairs, etc.), which may not be up your alley, but someone there might know of a twenty-something book club that would work for you. Also ask around at the Barnes & Noble in Bethesda or at The Writer's Center. You might even check your local library for postings or info; I know the Davis Library hosts a monthly book club, but I don't know what the ages of the participants are. These are my preliminary thoughts; if someone out there has others, please chime in.

Arlington, Va.: Do you have any idea when the three restaurants will open at the Market Common in Clarendon? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, it's Alexa. I'm not sure about the other two (Z'Tejas Southwestern Grill and Timpano's), but Big Bowl isn't opening until June.

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus. Love you! I don't know if you'll be able to answer this, but if anybody can, it will most definitely be you. When is the annual Kalorama yard sale planned?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi D.C. Kate here. I too am eagle-eyed for the first signs of Kalorama yard sales. You're going to have to wait for the biggie, though. Held every two years, it was last year. In the meantime, look for yard sale/estate announcements in the classifieds and check out Miss Pixie's new place in Dupont (almost next door to The Childe Harrold). Like the original Adams Morgan location, her mix of odds and sods has strong suits that are seasonal. Garden furniture was all the rage last week.

Washington, D.C.: Looks like rain this weekend. What do the gurus suggest as a low-key indoor date for Saturday afternoon?

The Going Out Gurus: How about a museum date? Take a look at what Maura's got brewing on the musems & galleries page to see what exhibits interest you. Of course, my (Jen's) favorite rainy day activity is a trip to the cinema. You could check out one of the recent Oscar-winning films, or Jodie Foster in "Panic Room," which opens tomorrow. Or how about a nice matinee of "E.T." at the Uptown? A group of friends and I went to see it last weekend, and it was wonderful to have it back on such a huge screen. Hey, maybe it will turn on your date's heartlight.

Fairfax, Va.: Hi Gurus,

What's good at the National Museum of Art right now? Anything special I should look out for?

The Going Out Gurus: Fairfax, do you mean the National Gallery of Art or the National Museum of American Art (now Smithsonian American Art Museum)? Hopefully, it's the former as the latter is closed until 2005. If you stop in the NGA, I (Maura) would check out two new shows -- Goya: Images of Women and The Flowering of Florence: Botanical Art for the Medici. If you're still looking for another museum, try the search box on the museums page.

Washington, D.C.: Hey kids,

What's your take on the crab place/luncheteria inside Eastern Market? I heard it was famous, and I like it, but I'm wondering if it isn't just a greasy spoon. I want to take my 'rents for crabcakes, and I don't want them longing for a better meal. Thoughts? And is Eastern Market kickin' on Saturdays? Thanks ever so.

The Going Out Gurus: Kid, yourself. It's Alexa, Washington. I haven't been to the Market Lunch in a couple of years I'm afraid, so I'd best not pose as authority on the subject. Let's ask the group.

Arlington, Va.: Alright y'all, this should be a fairly easy question to answer. I follow your discussions, and people always seem to ask about where the "cool/hip/underground/obscure" club scenes are. Helpful, but MY question is, where might a girl find a totally mainstream/Top 40s dance club on a Friday night (with a decent-sized dancefloor)? I've got a Britney Spears/J.Lo lovin' friend coming into town, and as much as I adore groovin' at Nation and ESL, I don't think she'll feel quite the same. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Rhome here, and I'm channeling Fritz on this one. By laying hands upon his magical Beer Stein, I am able to convey his will that you shall grab the first copy of the print Washington Post tomorrow, because Fritz and Eric Brace have a massive dance club guide in the Weekend section. It's the cover story! My quick tip for you though (if you can't wait) would be to try LuLu's

Arlington, Va.: Hi! I am hoping that you can give me some options. I am trying to help my boss set up a business lunch (for five people) for a "nice" restaurant (but doesn't scream "expensive") around the Convention Center/MCI Center downtown. Also a cozy place where they can converse easily. Your help is greatly appreciated!

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, Teaism might be a nice place for you. Or 701 perhaps?

re: ET at the Uptown: How crowded was it last weekend? I want to go this weekend but don't want to stand in line forever.

The Going Out Gurus: Since I (Jen) can be a little neurotic about such things, I ordered tickets for myself and ten friends online, then made everyone get there an hour ahead of time. This wasn't really necessary. By half-hour before showtime, there was a decent-sized line of people waiting to go in, but you could still easily walk up and buy a ticket. In fact, the theater wasn't entirely filled. So you shouldn't have a problem.

Book Club Answer: The Women's Information Network (www.winonline.org) sponsors a "Book Group" network for its members, who are pro-choice Democratic women, mostly under the age of 30. It's a great way to network and get some literary stimulation at the same time! I believe this month's meeting is coming up soon. Check out the Web site.

The Going Out Gurus: This is a good suggestion. Hope our book reader in Bethesda makes a note. Thanks.

Washington, D.C.: Any word on Love Seed Mama Jump playing at Clarendon Ballroom tomorrow night? Worth going to?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi DC, this is Joe. Love Seed Mama Jump is playing at the Clarendon Ballroom tomorrow night. They'll go on around 10. $5 if you get there before 8, $10 if you get there after 8. Worth going to? Uh, if that name doesn't bother you, it's probably worth it. Any LSMJ fans want to make the case for seeing them?

Uptown Tickets: Jen, where can you buy tickets online for E.T. at the Uptown?

The Going Out Gurus: I bought mine on fandango.com. You also can get them at moviefone.com.

Johnny's Half Shell: Today is my birthday and my fiance is taking me out for dinner to Johnny's Half Shell and I read the review which seemed pretty positive but I was wondering if any of you had additional comments or suggestion on what the good dishes are there? Also, what is a good place to go for drinks around there afterwards? Thanks! you guys are great!

The Going Out Gurus: Kate here, birthday girl, and as cake is the highlight of birthday meals, let's have the last be first. I cannot urge you more strongly to order at least one piece of their chocolate angel food cake. This spare brown doorstep swims in a sticky pond that smacks of burnt sugar. Devine. I would not order the steak, this is a fish place -- have the Chesapeake fish stew, a refined version of San Fransisco's cioppino or follow my lead and have two starter: uptown mussels and bumpkin barbecued shrimp. Johnny's is a great place for a special meal -- and don't be afraid to say it when you arrive. Some of the tables, especially those close to the coat rack/wait station would be a drafty, noisy disappointment. Have you considered having a birthday cocktail at Bistrot du Coin? Champagne by the glass is always on offer. ESL or the Tabard might be nice (and nearby) too.

Fairfax, VA: Planning on heading down to the Tidal Basin to see the Cherry Blossoms on Saturday, any suggestions for a place to grab some lunch near by?

The Going Out Gurus: Fairfax, Alexa here. You could walk along to the Wharf for some freshly shucked bivalves, a crabcake sandwich. But if you wanted somewhere sitdown you'd have to hike. Better to take a picnic, I say.

Herndon, Va.: Love Seed Mama Jump -- a must-see if you like energetic rock. Think a cross between Live, Emmit Swinging and a hip pop band. They are fun and they get the crowd jumpin'!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Herndon. There you go readers.

2:K:9: So apparently 2:K:9 got its liquor license suspended at the most recent ABC meeting. What does this mean for them and typically when a bar/club gets one suspended how long is it for?

The Going Out Gurus: It's Kate -- and man! do I miss Fritz right now. It sounds like 2:K:9 (license or no license) is on the rocks. Did you read about the Faith Evans debacle? $35 cover, nothing but water, two hour wait, were some of the highlights. Hopefully we'll have an answer for you next week. Please come back.

Old Town, Alexandria, Va.: Hi guys,

Do you know if the Smithsonian will be running the normal hours on Easter Sunday?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Old Town. The Smithsonian Museums will keep regular hours this Sunday. I (Maura) believe they only close on Christmas day.

Alexandria, Va.: Happy Thursday, Gurus!

Looking for the scoop on the Washington Monument. I'm planning to go to the mall this Saturday, and I'd love to go up in the monument (I can't believe I've lived here all my life and I've never been in it!). I saw on the National Park Service Web site that you can reserve tickets in advance, but when I selected "March 30," it says there are no tickets available. It lists each tour time (every half hour), and how many tickets are already reserved for that time slot. Some of the time slots only list two or three tickets reserved -- so why are there no more tickets available? Can you see my confusion? Also, I saw on your listing for the monument that Ticketmaster sells advance tickets -- but when I searched Ticketmaster it said there were "no events" found for the Washington Monument.

Anyway, is it possible for me to get a tour on Saturday or am I out of luck? I was hoping to find advance tickets to avoid waiting in a long line at the monument, but I guess I didn't plan far enough ahead. Thanks for your help!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Alexandria, this is Anne. I called the Park Service, and they agreed, their reservations site can look confusing. They're checking into fixing it to make it clearer. However, Saturday and Sunday advance tickets for the monument are indeed gone. They've been sold out for several weeks, sorry. I guess the confluence of Easter/Passover/cherry blossom peak/weekends was too much. Your remaining option is to go and stand in line for the same-day tickets. So, just to clear it up for people, you can get advance reservations (1.50/ticket) to tour the Washington Monument by calling 800/967-2283 x1 x2 and through the Web site http://reservations.nps.gov. Or, you can stand in line at the monument for same-day tickets.

I know its been asked before...: but there is no seach in the archives and I don't remembered when. I'm lame (but you all still rock!)

I want to take a bellydancing. If I recall you mentioned a place in Bethesda? Dance Motion? Joy Motion? Joy Dance? My memory fails me. Name and website, please? pretty please? with sugar on top?

P.S. I did search the entertainment guide. Do I get sympothy for trying? And did I mention you all rock! (are flatery and humility working?)

The Going Out Gurus: Oh, you were so close. The place you're thinking of is Joy of Motion, which has locations in Dupont, Friendship Heights and Bethesda. And yes, they offer belly dancing, though I think their spring session just started, which means you may have to wait until summer to take the class.
As a parting gift, I (Jen) give you their Web site, joyofmotion.org, where you can find more info.

Gaithersburg, Md.: Two weeks ago the Gurus mentioned some dress codes that area clubs, restuarants and bars may have. Several gurus have made disparaging references to the "khaki brigades" who may try to gain entrance to said establishments. In some parts of the country this is exactly what one -does- wear. If men are NOT supposed to wear khakis and buttondown shirts to Washington watering holes, what are they to wear? I recognize that this is a very broad question (perhaps your on-line guides could be searched by dress codes in the future), but I'm sure that the gurus can handle it! Your assistance would be greatly appreciated!

The Going Out Gurus: Rhome here, and I'm a jeans/khakis/sneakers (even button down shirts fairly frequently) type of cat myself. Even as I hurrumph at being turned down at frou-frou spots, I at least notice how the folks that get in differ from myself clothing wise.

Just put on some slacks and some shoes that aren't athletic, sandals, or bearing a lug sole (excludes my trusty Timberlands). Your top is a little trickier, I think the door harpies zero in on the oxford, button down collar type shirt. Wear something that isn't that.

Or you can just be like me and go to places where dress code is not a concern. Every now and then I'll relent though and pull out something more upscale, just remember you can get away with more casual gear if you have at least one cute woman with you, and/or some cash.

Silver Spring, Md.: Hi Gurus. I need "going out etiquette" help. When going to a nice spa for mani/pedi, what percentage do I tip? Ten percent? Perhaps some spa workers would like to weigh in on this.

The Going Out Gurus: Silver Spring. Kate here and Maura and I would encourage you to consider 20% a fair tip. They are working on your feet after all.

Arlington, Va.: Any Easter brunch recommendations for Pentagon City/Crystal City/Old town Alexandria? A baby will be part of the group.

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, have you seen the Easter brunch guide? (Link at the top of this page). Taverna Cretekou or Carlyle Grand?

Tiny closet-office: A couple weeks ago you had some information on a Sept. 11 exhibit at Arlington Cemetery. I can't find info on it in your excellent Entertainment Guide or the Arlington Cemetery Web site (although that site does play annoying music). I'm sure I'm just looking in the wrong places, but I've only heard about this through your chat. Help. Enlighten me and the clicksters.

The Going Out Gurus: Tiny-Closet, Here is all the information on the Sept. 11 Photo Gallery Project at Arlington Cemetery. It closes April 7, so I'd hurry.

Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus! Love the chat!

Need your help with something. I have a friend coming into town next weekend. He loves country music. Is there any place nice and fun where we can grab a beer and listen to some Garth Brooks?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi G'town, this is Joe and I've actually been looking for a good bar with a good country jukebox for a while. Not having much luck, I'm afraid. Stetsons has a decent selection, but if anybody else out there has a favorite country place, let's hear from you.

Washington, D.C.: Sister is coming with two kids, ages 6 and 2, tonight. We are planning on going to the zoo on Saturday and Easter brunch on Sunday. Any thoughts on what would be fun for the little ones tomorrow?

The Going Out Gurus: I (Anne) think the Beatrix Potter exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History is a perfect fit. Maura reports that the exhibit was designed so smaller viewers can see everything clearly, too.

Washington, D.C.: Where can my boyfriend and I get a good steak dinner on saturday and watch the games?

The Going Out Gurus: District Chophouse has TVs and great steaks. Though you might have to sit closer to the bar to get a good view.

Alexandria, Va.: Not a big LSMJ fan, but I am a big fan of the Clarendon Ballroom. Great venue -- you can get close to the stage, and the acoustics are pretty good.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Alexandria. The Clarendon Ballroom is a pretty great room.

Washington, D.C.: Going to see Santana on Monday night. Any thoughts on a place to hit for a quick bite and a drinky or two before the show?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, in keeping with the Latin theme, why don't you go to Jaleo which is just two blocks from the MCI Center. Great tapas and plenty of drinkys.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: I have 10 family members from New York coming in for dinner this Saturday. They like to eat big, drink big, and sometimes get a little rambunctious. Co-workers are recommending Cashion's, but I think it's a bit too froofy for this group. Your thoughts?

The Going Out Gurus: No, and I always think the portions are small and expensive. Maybe somewhere steaky is better for your bunch -- Nick & Stef's, Morton's?

Washington, D.C.: Hey gurus!

My mom's visiting for Easter weekend, and since she's from the Bible Belt, we have to make an appearance at church on Sunday morning. Any ideas for a nice, short, not-too dressy, nondenominational (protestant) Easter service that's Metro accessible and not at the crack of dawn? Also, is Easter Sunday brunch at Eastern Market a good idea?

Thanks a bunch!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, DC. I (Anne) think the best thing to do is check the religion calendars link on the Easter/Passover guide. Pick the area (in your case, the District?), that you'll be near, then a church that suits. As for Eastern Market -- the brunch scene there is always nuts, on Easter, I suspect it could be extra hopping as the noon hour approaches, especially since so many churches are nearby. If you like being at the center of the action and view long-ish waits for a table as more time to talk with Mom, enjoy.

Re: Book club: Check the City Paper Announcements listings in their classifieds. That's how I came across the book club I'm in now. We are a group of late 20's - early 30's who read contemporary fiction and meet in Arlington. I'd be glad to contact the poster directly if he/she wants more info.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for yet another suggestion. Book club suggester and book club seeker: if you e-mail me (Jen) directly, I will happily put you in touch with each other.
We're all about matchmaking here at Got Plans?, especially if it's in the name of literary discussion.

Shopping Question: I know this is more for Janet of In Store but she doesn't host chats that often and I'm desperate. I'm looking for a store that carries a wide selection of bras and is skilled at fitting women for them. I remember hearing one mentioned as the best place in the area, but I didn't bookmark the page. Is it Underwraps? Thanks and sorry if this is off-topic.

The Going Out Gurus: Kate here Shopper, and I think we can give you some suggestions -- a solid B maybe, if not an AA. Underwraps in Bethesda is indeed one good choice. Making an appointment with a personal shopper at Saks would be my first choice though. They have a wide selection and regularly serve such discriminating, demanding biddies that you will seem like sunshine and lollypops and thus get the warmest service. I hate to sound like Mom but be sure to take a t-shirt with you. Summer's coming up and you want to make sure you can wear anything any time. In light of Gwyneth's Alexander McQueen sag story, do you think the bra is ready for a return?

Re: Johny's Half Shell: The Crab Imperial is to die for! My boyfriend was not too impressed with his rockfish, which is what the waiter suggested to him. As I recall(?), they don't take reservations, so go early or be prepared for a wait.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks JHS. Yeah, no reservations and the rockfish is boring.

Re: Eastern Market: Eastern Market's definitely happening on Saturdays.

As for the lunch option, it probably depends on your parents. My mom loved it, dad not so much. If they're picky or easily flustered it may not be the best spot, but if they're laid-back and low-key they'll like it.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the input.

Petworth: Market Lunch is great - I love their NC BBQ, and the husband and my parents really love the crab cakes.

But, if that person is looking for ambiance, well, it is a lunch stand at the market. So, good basic food, in a very basic atmosphere. And yeah, the flea market, the food market, and the neighborhood make it a fun Saturday or Sunday. Just don't expect it to be high class - it's a lunch stand!

The Going Out Gurus: More on the Market Lunch...

Eastern Market: For the chatter asking about lunch at the Market, I've lived on the Hill for 15 years and have never understood why people wait in line for a rather mediocre meal. I'd venture elsewhere.

The Going Out Gurus: And a nay-sayer.

Arlington, Va.: Hi there,

Any word on author appearances or book readings to be held this weekend?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: There seems to be fewer readings than usual, probably because of the Passover/Easter holiday. But take a look at the top of this list to see what's happening in the next few days.

Gold Cup?: Friends and I are looking for groups/tour of the Virginia Gold Cup. We know DCYP has one but $95 is a little overpriced. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Hang on to those horses, friend, and please keep checking back on our Gold Cup info. We'll be sure to keep you posted as more updates come in. Generally, various universities' alumni associations host trips. Perhaps you can inquire with yours?

Not Teasim for business lunch!: Sorry gurus, but I have to disagree. I don't think the boss should take associates to a place where orders are placed at the counter (Teasim), no matter how good the food. What about Nick & Stef's, Jaleo, Austin Grill, or even Ten Penh?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, you are RIGHT! No counters for business lunches. Goodness me, no.

Washington, D.C.: Hello, I am heading to Philly this weekend. Any ideas of fun things to do or see? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC, this is Joe and I'm also heading to Philadelphia this weekend. (Though I think I'll be babysitting a niece or two, so my fun will probably be limited to playing with legos.) Let's see, so many great places to go up there. Tons of great bars and restaurants around Market St and 2nd, 3rd and 4th streets. Plus lots of galleries north of Market on 2nd and 3rd. If you've never been, you should get to South Street and the Italian Market as well. If the weather's decent, walk along the Schuylkill river and watch the rowers. There's also the new Kimmel Center on Broad St. which is home to the orchestra. It's supposed to be beautiful. And go to Reading Terminal Market (also on Market St.) That should do you for a bit.

Re: To Shopping Question: A coworker recommended Sylene in Chevy Chase. Anyone heard anything about them? I haven't checked it out yet, but it may be worth a try.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, I've heard good things about Sylene as well. Right around the corner from Tiffany's in Chevy Chase.

Washington, D.C.: If someone that worked for me booked a business lunch at Teaism, that would be that last time they'd be asked to do it.

The Going Out Gurus: Whatever.

Downtown Washington, D.C.: Anyone have the scoop on the new Italian place on F. Street that replaced Catalan? I noticed last week that it was open, unfortunately I can't remember the name. I think it began with an L?

The Going Out Gurus: It's Finemondo, and no I don't think anyone's been yet.

Dupont: I noticed Fritz is not in today's lineup. So let's be honest here... aren't you all getting a wee bit tired of his affected Britishisms and nightlife snobbery? Pumas, microbrews and anti-khaki-rants, oh my! Maybe you all could vote him off the chat, ala Survivor!

The Going Out Gurus: Maybe we already have. NO, just joking, of course. This is Joe and Fritz is in England perfecting his affected Britishisms and we're proud of him and we miss him and we want him back as soon as possible. Especially if he brings back the British chocolate he promised.

Washington, D.C. Bride: C'mon gurus, help me out! I am looking for a fun place to take my wedding party to lunch after the rehearsal, which will be on a Saturday. We will be approximately 13 or 14 people. I was thinking about the latin dim sum at Cafe Atlantico, but have never actually tried it. Other ideas would be much appreciated. I'm looking for good food and a fun, D.C. place for the out-of-towners. Thanks!

Bonus question: Where's a good place to take my bridesmaids to all get our nails done for the wedding? There will be five of us.

The Going Out Gurus: Dim sum would be fun. You could also try tapas at Jaleo or the meat fest/tapas combo that is Coco Loco. Or how about some Ethiopian at Meskerem?

As far as the nails part, I (Jen) don't think I can be much help. I've had maybe three manicures in my life. But I'm sure members of the peanut gallery will chime in as they always do whenever nail salons are mentioned.

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Just wanted to give a shout-out to all the people who came out on Sunday morning to cheer on the runners in the D.C. Marathon. You all gave up part of your weekend to help keep us motivated, and I know we appreciated it! If you didn't cheer, find out when the next race is (like SallieMae's 10K in April or the obvious choice of the Marine Corps in October), and get out there. You'll feel great and so will the runners.

The Going Out Gurus: Word, Adams Morgan! The gurus applaud all the runners and cheering supporters. Kkeep up your cheering at the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler on April 8 -- the best competitive distance runners you'll ever see at a D.C. road race.

Shopping, shopping, shopping: Help! Best friend's birthday is in a week. Any suggestions on where to shop for unique, interesting gifts? Specifically I'm looking for a boutique-type place where I could get cute handbags, accessories, etc., or a home furnishings store. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: This is Kate, and if I knew your neighborhood I could be more specific. I like what's on offer at Finials below Chevy Chase: sweet antiques and almost-antiques for the kitchen and garden. Next door's Periwinkle has the sweetest cards in stock too. Both Propper Toppers have spring bags and some very cute toile sun hats in stock. Kulturas has a case of signed first editions. Does she have a favorite author? Vintage pillow cases from Curzon Hill in Old Town? Or something new in the same spirit from Anthropologie on Rockville Pike? Anyone else have a favorite?

Matchmaking?: Well, I'm ISO a SM who likes long walks on the beach and dark music -- no khakis please! All interested please send pictures to the gurus.

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, and we like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain. But that doesn't mean we Gurus are going to be acting like the personals from now on.
For the record, I (Jen) only hook up people for book clubs. Nothing more.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Tell me, gurus:

What's a Metro-accessible bar (preferably downtown) where, should the gods smile, a lady can safely watch her Hoosiers kick the stuffing out of Maryland on a big screen Monday night?

The Going Out Gurus: This is Joe and I think that is going to be a one hard bar to find since Indiana is going to be watching the championship game along with everyone else. A six pack on me if I'm wrong about that.

Re: Belly Dancing: The Oxford Academy by Eastern Market (Above the Payless Shoe Source) has a fantastic Middle Eastern Dance teacher. I know her and have spoken to her students and they have a blast! I'd take the classes myself, but I'm too wrapped up in their flamenco classes! I've seen them though, it looks like fun!

They're on Spring Break this week, but they start up again April 1 (no joke)!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip. Belly dancer, start revving your hips.

Cowboy Boots: I'm desparately seeking cool chick cowboy boots. Do you have any suggestions as to where I might find a decent selection, this time of year, especially, in the D.C. area? Much obliged, Gurus.

The Going Out Gurus: The name escapes me (Kate!) but there's a world of western wear on King Street in Old Town on the same side (even numbered side) of the street as Hard Times and both wig shops. Old neighbors but don't dismay. They will kit you out.

Eastern Market: That's my 'hood! The Market Lunch crabcakes are tastylicious. But make sure your parents will think it's fun to stand in line for 20 minutes to eat out of paper baskets on stools squished in a tiny space. Because yes, Eastern Market is hoppin' on the weekends.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, it is, but make note, folks: Eastern Market will be closed on Easter Sunday.

Alexandria, Va.: My boyfriend, myself, and some friends are interested in seeing Love Seed Mama Jump, but we're a little wary of Clarendon Ballroom. Do they have a dress code?

The Going Out Gurus: Shoes and shirts.

Fritz: Oh my...he's promised you chocolate
from England....when't he coming back
and I'll be over, that stuff rocks......As for
the snarky pants who complained about
him, it's a big world out there and there
are lots of people who don't wear khaki
pants and baseball hats all the time...
you'd be amazed!

The Going Out Gurus: we can't share Fritz's chocolate. It's only for us. We're very selfish.

Chevy Chase, Md.: Hi Gurus,

Next Friday my parents are visiting from Chicago, and I'm looking around for things to do on that day. Right now I'm stumped. They've seen the usual stuff. Can you offer some eclectic suggestions for my parents (museums, restaurants, nature areas, theaters)? They're 63, and some things they like are history and military stuff, strolling outside (or canoeing), and the occasional funky artsy-fartsy thing. Metro access would be nice, but not necessary.

I'm going to cheat and ask you another question: A couple friends from work and I are heading out for a beer tonight. We're all new to the area. We work in the District, near Connecticut Avenue, a bit north of the Van Ness Metro. Any thoughts for drinking establishments where one can talk? We seek good beer (other alcohol an option too) and a place where a bunch of scruffy guys will feel comfortable. Iconoclastic clientele a plus.

Thanks. Really. Thomas

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Chevy Chase. This is Maura. If you're into military stuff and history, you could try the Sept. 11 photo project or the just docked Amistad. If you stop into the Navy Memorial Heritage Center museum, you'll be just around the corner from great bites at Jaleo, Ten Penh, Teaism or the new Signatures. For nature, take an indoor stroll at the somewhat newly reopened U.S. Botanic Garden. Have you toured the Audubon Society in your own neck of the woods?

As for bar suggestions, I like the bar at the Parthenon restaurant, just south of Chevy Chase Circle. A good sized space with a low key atmosphere. Perfect for grabbing a round (or two) with friends.

Dingus Day: I thought I was the only person who knew about this in this town. We always had huge water fights in the street on this day back in Chicago.

The Going Out Gurus: Another Dingus amongus.

Country Music: I'm not much of a country music fan, so not sure what really constitutes a good juke box, but I hear a lot of country at Uncle Jed's in Bethesda.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks CM, we'll check it out.

Philly Hip: When in Philly, don't miss Pod, a hilarious and delicious sushi/asian place by Penn. The food is fab, and the ambience is so uber-hip that you just have to laugh. Have one of their colorful drinks: yummy-yummy.

If you're around South Street, look up The Continental. It's a hip and fun bar. And I've heard good things about a place called Tangerine. I think they are all owned by the same guy/group.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Philly Hip, we'll pass these on.

Philly, Pa.: Grew up in Philly, and I'll be there this weekend as well (guess everyone's partying in the City of Brotherly Love).

Few more suggestions: Check out Manayunk -- lots of great shopping, art galleries, restaurants, and bars. If the weather's nice, take a walk along the Schuylkill River by Boathouse Row. See what's at the Art Museum (yes, those are the "Rocky" stairs). Get a cheesesteak (from Pat's, Geno's, both, or just any corner hoagie place) and a soft pretzel. I get so homesick for them it's ridiculous. Enjoy one of the US's most overlooked gems -- I love Philly!

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, it's my hometown too and I'm proud of it. Thanks for the suggestions.

Washington, D.C.: Hey have you heard anything about when the statues of the donkeys and elephants are going to be here? (In case you haven't heard, it's a spin-off of the painted cows that were all over Chicago!) Last I read was they'd be in town this spring.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, as far as I (Anne) know, the plan is for the Party Animals installation to begin in April and be up through September. The final details haven't been released yet, but we'll be sure to keep you posted. Can you keep a secret? We're building something very special for our site related to this exhibit ....

Arlington, Va.: Hi Guruuuus! Love the chats! Some friends and I are planning to go to Strike in Bethesda next Saturday night after dinner. Does it get ridiculously crowded on weekends? If we actually do want to bowl, should we not even bother going on a Saturday? I've heard some crazy wait times to get a lane. It's supposed to be hip, but how hip can a bowling alley be? There's no dress code, right? Thanks a bunch!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington. Jen here, and yes, Strike does get ridiculously crowded on weekends. My advice? Do a late dinner and bowl first. You should have a better shot at getting a lane if you go early, though even that is no guarantee. I've heard horror stories about people waiting three hours or more to get a lane on a Sat. night. And no, there is no dress code, but some of the people who go to Strike dress as if there were one.

Random side-note: did anyone else see the preview for next week's episode of "Ed"? Ed's brother comes to town and changes Stuckeybowl into a hip, martini-style alley called Strikes. Weird coincidence, no?

Texan by Marriage in Washington, D.C.: The Tune Inn on the Hill has a GREAT country jukebox! Hank Williams, Steve Earle, George Strait, and, of course, "You Don't Call Me Darlin'" by David Allan Coe. Pair that up with their cheap pitchers and burgers and its a night fit for a Texan.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks TBMIWDC. Forgot about the Tune Inn. A good choice.

DC-20004: Foe the bride looking for an unusual place to take her wedding party after rehearsal - the Marrakesch on New York Ave NW between 6th and 7th Sts. Multi course meal served Moroccan style with belly dancer as entertainment. Bldg used to be a bus garage - but you could never tell. Not cheap - last time I went it was about $40 per person plus booze.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the suggestion. Finally, the belly dancing and bridal question merge into one response.

DC: Any ideas where to go for a romantic ELOPEment? (if thats a word)

The Going Out Gurus: If I (Alexa) were you DC, I'd go and have a sexy little dinner at Bistro Bis and then walk across to Union Station (with your hatbox and vanity case) and hop the midnight train to Georgia. "Elopements" should always be by locomotive, and should always be south-bound.

Northern Virginia Hokie -- re: Gold Cup: The Capital Alumni Network and about 35 alumni groups are going to have the largest row of tents ever seen -- Gold Cup. Tickets are on sale at http://www.dcalum.org -- directions are there to pick the alumni group you want to be affiliated with. It's cheaper than $95 right now too.

And, if you are a Hokie -- info will be up on our Web site tonight at www.novahokie.org.

The Going Out Gurus: Going for the gold

The Going Out Gurus: Maura stepping in -- and likely to get clobbered for it by my fellow gurus -- but have to say "Go Hoosiers!"

Dupont Hoosier: Ye of little faith!

Let's just remember that's what those sorry little Dukies thought, too...

Shall I email my address so you have a place to send that six-pack?

The Going Out Gurus: Little faith? Make it no faith. Sure, email your address (not that I'll need it) joe.heim@wpni.com

Dupont, Washington, D.C.: There's a new resturant on 18th Street called Grille 88. There is no review on it yet; do you know anything about it?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Dupont. I've been remiss. I went two weeks ago and had such an uneven experience that I've wrestling with my write up and left it unfinished which is unfair. This is Kate. I was undone by the baby grand piano at the bar. Well, less the piano, more it's plunker. Food was fare if uninteresting. American standards (grilled salmon, meatloaf, etc.) upped by unnecessarily fussy flourishes. For example, the piano-theme extends to the menu. Bless the diner who has the courage to order either dinner salad by name: "I'll have the Elton John, no make it the Billy Joel."
Grille 88 should mature into something more given its pedigree: owner from Felix, chef from Addies. Perhaps I should play it again?

washington, dc: to shopping, shopping, shopping,
The best place for a best friend gift has got to be Wake Up Little Suzie in Cleveland Park on Ct. Ave.. They have the best selection of funky, quality gifts-stuff for the home, bath products (soap to "wash away your sins), pottery, jewelry, cards, some clothing, picture frames, etc.

The Going Out Gurus: Good suggestion. Any more?

Washington, D.C.: Shopping -- for home stuff, has the shopper tried Home Rule on 14th Street? FABU!

The Going Out Gurus: Yes and Go Mama Go! next door -- love the beaded curtains with the Mona Lisa or the Hula girl prints.

Oh, to have a door... (Cubeville): Hi Gurus. My boyf's parents are coming to town for Easter weekend. They've "seen everything". What can he do to entertain them? Were thinking cherry blossoms... what else?! Is the Star Spangled Banner exhibit still at the American History? What about the Textile Museum? Are either of these easily accessible from Tidal Basin? What about lunch (this would probably be on Saturday)? Other not-to-be-missed exhibits/events we can all enjoy? Thanks, you rock!

The Going Out Gurus: Cubeville, I am afraid the Star Spangled Banner is off display and it will be too fragile to display again. American History does have a great exhibit on flags - on magazine covers to be exact - called July 1942: United We Stand. The Textile Museum is a intimate museum with terrific shows and the Woodrow Wilson House is just a few doors away. They'd require a cab or short metro ride from the Mall or the Tidal Basin, but well worth it. If you're in Dupont for lunch try Bistrot du Coin and if you're by the Mall, check out our Dining Near the Mall guide.

Frederick, Md.: Have you heard about Frederick's annual Egg Days? During the week following Easter, many Frederick residents dress up as eggs, while others chase them with spatulas, crying, "Poach, Scramble, Fry! Easter Eggs Must Die!" The spatula holders chase the eggs down one of Frederick's main streets. At the end of the race, everyone gets to enjoy farm-fresh eggs. Supposedly this is an old Pennsylvania Dutch custom. I highly recommend this event to anyone who likes old-fashioned fun.

The Going Out Gurus: This is Anne, and er, no, my Frederick friends have not mentioned this tradition. Do other Frederick natives have further info on this?

Snarky pants defends herself: To clarify: I am as anti-khaki-and-baseball-hats as the next person. And I like lounges and microbrews and even the occasional bit of Eurospeak.

But c'mon... Fritz is out of control and must be stopped. That's all I was saying. Tally-ho!

The Going Out Gurus: OK snarky pants. Thanks for clarifying. Cheerio

Now I've heard it all: If it pains the poster who seemed put out about having to find a "nice, short, not-too dressy, nondenominational (protestant) Easter service that's Metro accessible and not at the crack of dawn?", then point your mother to a church and please stay home! Sheesh! Those of who go every week are tired of once a year people crowding the church to say nothing of someone, who is not a member, with a too short attention span, too casual clothes who disturbs the service by coming in late. Do me a favor - sleep in!

The Going Out Gurus: Spreading the love.

22312 -- Re: Bra fitting: To the poster looking for a bra boutique, try DorNe Corset Shoppe on Georgia Avenue. They are in D.C. but very close to the Silver Spring Metro. I have had good luck with custom fitted bras through them.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Kate again: and don't be intimidated by the "fitters." Like I'm not. They are a bit brusque, but they are really, really good at what they do.

Bethesda, Md: Anyone have any thoughts or kow anything about the french restaurant that opened across the street from barnes and noble?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. Mon Ami Gabi just openend this week. It's a national chain and I (Maura) think the first was in Chicago, but I could be wrong. Mid-priced Americanized bistro-fare and I hear (in Chicago anyway) that it's pretty good. Of course, given it's location I am sure the crowds in Bethesda will flock there regardless. Just save room for the new Giffords Ice Cream around the corner.

Re: Frederick, MD: I grew up in Frederick, and I've never heard of this event! I'll be back there for the weekend, so do give details...sounds very amusing!

The Going Out Gurus: Great, Frederick. We'd love to get the scoop on this.

Arlington, VA: Some friends and I were interested in going to "Seven" in Tysons Corner, but can't find a write up or anything about it anywhere. Anyone been there, heard anything?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Seven is fun. That Mark Caraluzzi (owner of Bistro Bistro, Thyme Square) has a nice way of going about restaurants. You'll like it.

Lincoln Sunrise Service?: Is there a sunrise service at the Lincoln Memorial too or is this just at Arlington?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, both the Lincoln and the Jefferson memorials will have free sunrise services at 6 a.m. Easter Sunday. The Lincoln's will be on the steps by the Reflecting Pool. The Jefferson one is likely to be on the west side in the grass.

Alexandria: I've been to Frederick for Egg Days and they rock! Definitely a can't-miss!

The Going Out Gurus: Eggs-ellent.

Best Friend Gift Stuff: Absolutely has to be Catch Can - there's one on Conn Ave in Chevy Chase DC and on Metropolitan in Kensington. Great wonderful funky clothes and gifty items - I purposely buy things there and avoid malls.

The Going Out Gurus: Just around the corner from one of my (Maura's) faves -- Periwinkle.

virginny: Isn't Coco Loco closed? Went there last Sat. night and all was dark...

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, virginny, that's the skinny. Coco Loco has shut down as far as we know.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks everyone for joining the discussion. That's it for today. See you next week.
