Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EST, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Hello, and welcome once again to HH (that's happy hour in case you're
wondering). We've missed you this week, could have used a little help.
But you're here now, and that's all that matters. What can we offer you
in the way of plans? A Depeche
Mode Dance Party perhaps, an early St.
Pat's Parade, some wine,
a Lambchop.
There's plenty, so please help yourself.
We're all here: Kate, Anne, Fritz, Joe, Maura, Rhome, Jen and me
(Alexa), the - shall we say - lady of the house. So who wants what?
Zoolander:
A few friends and I are going to the zoo and want to know what is around there for a good hearty lunch afterwards. We are MoCo residents who don't know that area too well! THANKS!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Zoolander, this is Maura. For a bite to eat post-zoo, I'd head up to Spices or even Firehook in Cleveland Park or down to Petits Plats in Woodley Park. I recently had a yummy brunch at New Heights, also in Woodley. Enjoy.
Rockville, Md.:
Two questions:
How early in the day do I have to arrive at the ticket stall in order to get tickets for the Washington Monument?
Also: does Washington have a reduced-price ticket stand like New York and London? I'd like to see Contact and some of the other shows which will be coming to the National Theater, and my schedule is flexible enough (and wallet thin enough) that day-of-performance tickets would be just fine.
Many thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Rockville. My (Maura's) advice is to get in line for tickets to the Washington Monument before 11 a.m. As for half price tickets, try TICKETPlace. We've got the dish on that right here.
For Zoolander:
What about Lebanese Taverna?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes!
Arlington, Va.:
Hi Gurus,
Reading your chat gets me through all my Thursdays at work, thanks.
So my parents want to come in Easter weekend. I want to take them to Sunday brunch, but not at the Silver Diner. I'm willing to go anywhere in Arlington, Alexandria and D.C. somewhere that's above diner-quality, but not too pricey. And since it'll be easter, should I plan on making reservations?
The Going Out Gurus: Have you looked at our Brunch Guide, Arlington? Or our list of good restaurants that serve it? We worry, we Gurus, about our database going to waste. Don't get me (Alexa) wrong, we like to help you out in person. But sometimes a bit of clicking (like keying the word 'brunch' into the search box) will take you a long way.
Alexandria, Va.:
Is there a good happy hour spot downtown where a couple of single "late 30-something" women can go without feeling like the chaperones?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Alexandria – this is Fritz, and I had the "sitting at the adult table" feeling last week when I met people at McCormick and Schimick's for happy hour. Good drinks, great bartenders and a dead-cheap happy hour menu ($1.99 half pound burgers! $1.99 Caesar salads!). It was a fun, lively crowd, though. You might also want to try the very posh bar at Blackie’s or even Bar Rouge.
Polly's Drag Brunch:
Any of you guys ever been to Polly's drag brunch? I'm thinking about taking one of my friend's there for her birthday this Sunday. How is the food? Atmosphere? How should we dress? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus:
Perry's drag brunch? None of us here today has ever been to this florid event, but let's ask the gang.
Annapolis, Md.:
Do you have any info about Friday nights at Cape Hatteras Seafood in Upper Marlboro? At www.urbanhangsuite.com, it is listed as a place to go on Friday nights and since I live closer to there rather than coming into D.C., I was wondering what's the deal? Also, do you know anything about the Eagle's Nest in Odenton as a place to go and the type of crowd it attracks? Thanks so much!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello. As a P.G. County native, I (Fritz) also read this announcement with interest, but no one I’ve asked has heard anything about it (positive or negative), and the blurb read like a promoter’s press release. I’ve learned to be dubious of those, although UHS does publish a lot of them. If you try it out, please e-mail me or join the chat next week to tell us about it. The Eagle’s Nest, however, I have heard about. It’s across from Fort Meade, and has a reputation as a bit of a military hangout – karaoke and all. But they’ve been doing a Friday party with DJs from Magic 95.9 – a Baltimore “Adult Urban” station – and the club has been attracting an upscale African American crowd with R&B dance music.
Arlington, Va.:
Hey Gurus,
Do you know if there are any bars around with a mechanical bull?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, it’s Fritz. The short answer: no. No mechanical bulls between Fredericksburg and Pennsylvania. Why? Liability, mostly. But there are a lot of people clamoring for one.
Glover Park, Washington, D.C.:
Hi,
My boyfriend and I have tickets to the International Wine Festival at the Reagan Building this weekend and were wondering if any Guru has attended this in the past? We haven't and were trying to get a sense of what it was all about-plus, what the appropriate dress for this event would be (I said no jeans and he disagreed!)
HELP!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Guru. I (Maura) have attended this event in the past (this year I'm hitting World of Wheels instead). Sorry to tell the bf that last time I was at the Wine Fest I saw few in jeans. And for the Wash. D.C. poster with another query on the event, read our International Wine Festival profile for all the details.
Yikes!:
My longest and closest friend will be in the area tomorrow night, and I would like to take her out for some fun and chit-chat. However, she will be staying out in Reston at a work-related seminar. Anything to do out there, even a late dinner say around 9 p.m. would be good? She's not to keen on driving in to meet me. Maybe meet halfway, say in Tysons? I live in the Clarendon area of Arlington. Any help would be appreciated! You gals and guys are the greatest!
The Going Out Gurus: Don't despair, Yikes. I (Jen) have plenty of suggestions for you. If you choose to do the Reston thing, you can grab a bite at any of the spots in Reston Town Center, like Big Bowl, Market Street or Rio Grande, all of which stay open until 10 or later. You might also try Amphora, in the Reston-Herndon area. If you don't want time limits, you can always do the 24-hour Silver Diner, in either Reston or Tysons. And if you opt to go the Tysons route, you might try Cafe Deluxe, next-door to the big 'ol Crate and Barrel. Not 100 percent sure of their hours, but I suspect they are open until at least 10:30 or 11. Hope this helps.
Mt. Pleasant, Washington, D.C.:
Hi guys!
I am hoping to get a drastic haircut this weekend (think Jennifer Anniston long blonde hair to Christy Turlington short brown hair hair). I am a little nervous and want to go to the best stylist/colorist in the city. Can you help me out with some suggestions? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Mt. Pleasant. After losing a football playoff bet to Joe last month and shaving my head, I (Maura) am not in the market for a haircut, but maybe some readers have ideas?
Washington, D.C.:
Can you tell me the best place for Bloody Marys? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) used to love the Cajun Bloody Mary at Tunnicliff’s Tavern, but I haven’t been back for brunch since their grand reopening, so I can’t vouch for it (or even know if they have it) at this time. But I do like to make my own Bloody Marys – I was taught the "traditional" recipe by some barristers when I was bartending in London – so I’ll recommend the Sign of the Whale’s "Make Your Own" Bloody Mary bar. The server gives you a pint glass that’s half full of vodka, and you add everything else yourself. Last time I was there, there were about 90 bottles of ingredients, from varying levels of hot sauce to peppers and even pre-made mix, if you’re lazy. And if you screw up, just ask for another glass. It is, after all, all-you-can-drink.
Crystal City, Va.:
I'm looking to branch out from my little bubble and meet more people. I was thinking of trying Single Volunteers. Do you or the clicksters have any comments on this group?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, do you clicksters? Let's hear.
K Street Cube, Washington, D.c.:
What is the difference between "Song of the Year" and "Record of the Year"? I'm puzzled.
And can I be Mary J. Blige in my next incarnation? Please? Thanks, Gurus. Rock on.
The Going Out Gurus: Rhome here, poking my head around your cubicle wall. Song of the Year is an award for the songwriter, Record of the Year recognizes a recording/single. And Mary J. sure did blow the roof off that mother. Wrenched all kinds of emotion out of that song and didn't hit a wrong note. You know I was in front of the tv testifyin'. When Celine Dion gives you a standing 'O' and mouths "go head girl", you know you rocked it.
Arlington, Va.:
Good afternoon Gurus. Does Habana Village still give free salsa lessons? If yes, when are they? Must learn before a wedding featuring a salsa band. And I know I need the practice!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. This is Fritz. The Salsa lessons at Habana Village, offered at 7 p.m. Wednesday though Friday, aren’t exactly free – you pay a $10 cover for two hours of lessons and dancing afterwards. But it’s money well spent, and the mojitos are a bonus. Other places to take free salsa lessons include Clarendon Grill and Lucky Bar (Mondays), Lulu’s (Tuesday) and Coco Loco (Thursday and Friday). Zanzibar has salsa lessons on Wednesday (with a free buffet) but there’s a $5-10 cover, depending on arrival time. Good luck.
Washington, DC:
Can you tell me of a place to get a good salad in either Bethesda or DC?
The Going Out Gurus: Have you tried the High Noons?
Arlington, Va.:
Hello Gurus!
I want to check out Bohemian Caverns, but I'm feeling pretty skeptical after reading the reader reviews for it. Have any of you or the readers here had a positive experience with this place?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Arlington. This is Fritz. I’ve had decent experiences at Bohemian Caverns – not great ones. Then again, I haven’t eaten there, which is what most of the complaints on our site seem to be about. (Both Eric Brace and I have heard from people about the less-than-stellar service, though.) If you’re just going for the show in the Caverns, arrive in plenty of time to get a seat with a view of the stage. Service can be slow, but the music is great. I’ve actually gotten better service upstairs in Club 2001, the bar/dance club area, and I see Sugar Bear and the Hip Huggers are going to start performing there on Fridays.
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.c.:
Hi! I recently moved to D.C. and I wanted to say that you have been a good source of info. I needed a haircut and went to Trim on 18th and the grrls there are fab! I wanted to give them a plug. A question concerning clothes, where does a zoftig kinda gal go to find up to date fashions that aren't made out of polyester or look like cookie-cutter Lane Bryant stuff?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Adams Morgan. Thanks for the haircut tip. As for clothes, have you tried Betsy Fisher, Daisy, All About Jane or Relish?
Colorist:
Andre Chreky, despite the drama, is still the best place for color. Good luck with the change!
The Going Out Gurus: More tips.
In a Bind -- I need your help!:
Hey there Gurus. You always have great suggestions for people -- I hope you'll have one for me. My wife's birthday is this weekend. I'd like to take her to dinner and a show (something light and fun, no heavy dramas.) The problem is, I've waited til the last moment and it seems like everything is sold out. I'm open to other ideas to. I just want to do something special or out of the ordinary. Any ideas? I'm willing to travel to Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, etc. Hey, if it's a good idea, I'll take -you guys- out for -your- birthdays too!
The Going Out Gurus: All right, bind man, I (Jen) think I can help. It appears there are still tickets for Woolly Mammoth/Theater J's Sat. night performance of "Tommy J and Sally," which deals with a heavy subject (race) but so in a "darkly funny" manner, according to The Post's Nelson Pressley, who seemed to really enjoy the show. If you choose to see it, you also have tons of dining options within walking/cabbing distance, including Al Tiramisu, Etrusco or the Jefferson Restaurant inside the Jefferson Hotel. You might have a look at our feed from TICKETplace, which has discounted advance tickets to a number of shows that might interest you. Hope this unbinds you a bit.
For Mt. Pleasant, Washington, D.C.:
Go to RPM Salon. I've had Christy Turlington short for six years now, and I've tried all the other salons. RPM is the best, with the most reasonable prices. They're located on the Hill near the Capitol. Request Steve or Thomas. They'll hook you up.
The Going Out Gurus: It's all about the hair.
Washington, D.C.:
My BF and I want to spend the day together this weekend -- in town -- doing something fun. But here are the caveats: we're both too cold to brave the aoo, we've done all the museums, and we'd like to avoid a shopping or eating-centric day. What else is there to DO in the daytime in the winter? help!
The Going Out Gurus: Good Q., Wash. This is Kate and I wonder if you two might like holding hands in the dark during the D.C. Independent Film Festival. It starts tonight and runs for one week at Visions. I know how you feel about eating-centric, does drink-centric count? You could get squiffy at the International Wine Festival. And lastly, Options 2002 opens on Friday night. It's a group show mounted by the Washington Project for the Arts, a forward-thinking collatition. It should be a great party and you can always spent Saturday in bed -- recovering, gutter brains.
The Burbs:
Hi Gurus,
You guys are always on top of things so here goes.
I was thinking of trying out Dream. What do you think is the best nite to go. What type of music do they play different nites? How are the drink prices. How much of a problem is it to lv my car on the street there.
thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Wow. Lots of questions, 'Burbs. I (Fritz) like Friday because the free buffet and happy hour remind me (somewhat) of Republic Gardens. They play hip-hop and house. Thursdays and Saturdays are pretty similar, with a mix of hip-hop, house, salsa (if I remember correctly), world (in the VIP on thursday) and more. Unless you go early on Saturday for the open bar (til 10 p.m.), cocktails run in the $7-10 range, which isn't too bad, compared to other clubs. Not sure what beer costs -- probably around $5. As far as parking, I've heard many horror stories from people who parked on the street and had their cars broken into. Try to use one of the paid lots instead. (They have valet parking, but it's pricey.)
Arlington, Va.:
Last week someone mentioned an Afghan restaurant in Rosslyn and I was looking for a review/location of it on the Post site. I did not see any listing. Does anyone know where this place is and if it is good?
The Going Out Gurus: Did someone? Because they may have meant the Cabul Caravan which has closed. A meat place called Rays the Steaks is due to open there soon.
Washington, D.C.:
Heard a rumor that the Graduate (starring Kathleen Turner, Jason Biggs, and Alicia Silverstone) would be stopping in Baltimore before heading to Broadway. I saw the Broadway ads in the New York Times this weekend, but can't for the life of me find any info on the Baltimore shows. Was this all just a dream of mine?
The Going Out Gurus: It was not a dream, D.C. Unfortunately, the Baltimore stop was extremely brief; "The Graduate" was at the Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore for only 10 days in January.
I (Jen) believe it's finishing up its run in Boston now, then is headed to NYC. So if you really want to see it, get on the stick and reserve some seats for the Broadway version.
Delaware:
Anyone heard of a bar called Adams Mill or somthing like that? My friend said it is pretty cool.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Delaware. I (Fritz) like Adams Mill Bar and Grill, and usually take groups of friends there. Very laid back and neighborly kind of place. Certainly less dressy than most AM bars and clubs. No cover, moderately priced beer. Good for hanging out, especially when they open the patio.
Washington, D.C.:
Can PLEASE somebody give me directions from the Metro to the Metro Cafe. The post puts a link to Metro map, but it doesn't help if you don't know the stop, silly. Thanks a bunch!
The Going Out Gurus: Silly Rhome here. Take the green line to U St/
Cardozo. Get out on the exit that isn't the Af. Am Civil War Memorial (13th street I think?). Go west on U St. to 14th. Go South on 14th to Church St, between P & Q.
Alexandria:
My friends and I were going to go to Murphys in Old Town to watch the St. Pattys day parade on Saturday, but now they are calling for rain and sleet.
1. Will the cancel the parade or go on with it?
2. What could we do as an alternative? Would Bowl Bethesda be packed during the day?
Thanks!!!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Alexandria. We'll let you know as soon as we know the details on the rain v. shine potential of the St. Pat's parade. Even if the parade is cancelled, you could still celebrate at Murphy's, other Irish pubs, or other Old Town restaurants. On Strike Bethesda, your only obstacle to a clear lane in the daytime is a birthday party, when the joint can be overrun with wee tykes. If you go, let us know what it's like in the afternoon. I (Anne) think rainy days are also perfect for museum hopping.
More MJB:
OK, yeah, her song/performance was really great, but lemme ask you this (hopefully without sound stupid since I've never heard the song before and don't have much Mary J. Blige knowledge): Did the piano part sound a little like the theme to "Young and the Restless" or was it just me? Was that intentional or coincidence? Considering she sang "When I was young and restless" I was kinda baffled.
The Going Out Gurus: That was indeed the Young & the Restless theme. Being the queen of hip-hop soul, Mary's "No More Drama" is another example of the hip-hop aesthetic of appropriation and revamping, otherwise known as "sampling". I think the Y&R thing was fresh, they flipped it.
Alexandria, Va.:
I've been waiting for Digweed to come to Nation and now the date is finally set. Can you please tell me more about what to expect from Buzz? I've been a little intimidated in the past, but would love to see Sasha + Digweed. Any tips for a mid-20s girl who usually hangs out in Old Town?
The Going Out Gurus: Your best advice, Alexandria, is to get tickets in advance. And then get to the club early. This is Fritz, and I've heard from people who missed shows at Buzz because they arrived at 11:30 or midnight and wound up waiting in line for up to an hour to get in.
I'm sure S&D will be headlining, so if you turn up at 11, you should be okay.
As for Buzz itself, well, it's an experience. Lots of young(ish) kids, but some older heads who come for the music. One of the best sound systems in town.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Kate and the gurus are my anti-drug.
Question: Chef Geoff or Lavandao for my friend Cathleen's birthday? This would be table for 10 on a weekend night (with reservation).
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here and if you keep this up I'm going to be forced to make a public service announcement. I might suggest Lavandou in Cleveland Park rather than Cheff Geoff, if only for ease of location. Both bills might add up to roughly the same amount, but at the end of the night, at least in C.P. you can always go next door to Aroma, Bardeo, Nanny's for a nightcap. That said, I'm sure Chef Geoff and co. would be extremely nice to birthday girls and boys -- tuck that idea away until spring and book a big table on their patio.
Alexandria, Va.:
A friend of mine is coming in from out of town on Monday night, so naturally we would like to dine out at a restaurant that has a large screen TV so that we can watch professional rassling. We consider rassling to be just like figure-skating, except with tattoos.
Unfortunately, most so-called "sports" bars do not consider rassling to be a sport and do not show it. Does anyone know of a restaurant (preferably near NW D.C.) that shows pro rassling on a large screen TV?
The Going Out Gurus: Okay, I'm admitting defeat. This is Fritz, and I KNOW I've recently seen (or been in) a bar that advertises "WWF Sundays." I just can't think of what it is, though.
Somebody, please help.
12th Floor Metro Center, Washington, D.c.:
I was talking to some tourists on the subway earlier this week and they mentioned that they were going to stand in line at 10 a.m. for tickets to tour the White House. Did I miss something? I thought that White House tours were closed, except for school groups. I told them that and they said that they'd called and were assured that they were open. Was there an announcement made about this that I just out and out missed?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi 12th Floor. This is Maura and you're right, they're wrong. The White House is currently only open to school groups. The good news is that the U.S. Capitol is expanding its tour hours. Does that help?
Arlington, Va.:
This might be a bit out of your range, but I hope you can help.
I am looking for some new bands to check out live. Caught Last Train Home at Iota -- and am a big fan of Old 97's and Reverand Horton Heat type shows. Any thoughts on people coming to town that might fall into that range?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington, this is Joe and you probably already know that the Rev. Horton Heat will be at the 9:30 March 16. Pinback and Canyon will play some country-influenced rock at the Black Cat this Sunday, though it'll be of a more laid-back variety. And Robbie Fulks is coming to Iota, March 14.
Washington, D.C.:
Do you know anything about Sunday brunch at The Corcoran Gallery of Art? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I (Alexa) have the menu to the Corcoran's brunch sitting right here on my desk. I'm that good. Here's the deal. It describes itself as a "lively menu of Southern influenced cuisine," goes from 10:30 to 2 and is $21.95 for adults, ($10.95 for kids under 12). First come, first served.
Ignored and unloved (sniff):
Do you guys get bombarded with questions? I've tried submitting questions for the last month now (always early, sometimes even before 1) and have yet to see a response. Do you guys deem them unworthy? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: What was the question?
For In a Bind:
Rewind at the newly reopened Old Town Theater in Alexandria, Va. I haven't seen the show that's there now, "Crazy Love," but it doesn't sound too intense, and appears to be selling lots of tickets. And there's tons of options in OT for dinner. For instance Austin Grill is a good bet.
The Going Out Gurus: Nice ideas.
Washington, D.C.:
My boyfriend and I have very closely spaced birthdays and were tossing around the idea of a luxurious weekend escape -- here in D.C. (or immediate vicinity) -- as a joint celebration. We were thinking a romantic hotel, side-by-side massages, a spendy dinner at a good steak joint. No problem on the last item, but we're having trouble finding options for the first two, particularly the massages. Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: What about the Four Season's in Georgetown? They've got a well equipped spa in situ and I'm sure their masseuse has rubbed shoulders with the best of them -- can you get them to talk? It's Kate and I know there are hotel deals to be found, I'd just call around and ask. Three weeks ago the Willard had a suite sale. Sweet indeed.
NO!:
Skip Andre Chreky -- they recently RUINED my hair -- I went for a different look as you are planning on going for.
Try ILO on Wisconsin Avenue. It is a little known GEM!
The Going Out Gurus: More on hair-dos.
Polly's Drag Brunch:
I hope you are talking about Perry's because it is an absolute blast. The brunch is great, tons of food. And the entertainment is alot of fun. Bring lots of $1 bills!
The Going Out Gurus: Support for Polly's.
Rockville, Md.:
Last night went to a play -- Montgomery College, Rockville campus. The play was very good, and for the price of admisssion it was much more worthwhile than spending a ton of money for a venue downtown.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Rock.
Washington, D.C.:
I'm looking for bars with cask-conditioned ales; I know of John Harvard's, Brickskeller, Rock Bottom Ballston, and I heard a rumor that Sweetwater Tavern does one occasionally. Hopefully I'm these aren't all, any help!?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. This is a subject close my own heart. This is Fritz, and I can add Rock Bottom Bethesda, District Chophouse, the Virginia Beverage Company (occasionally) and the Old Dominion Brewpub, as well as Hero's in Manassas, which serves OD real ales. I've also heard that Franklyn's, a new brewpub opening in Hyattsville, will have weekly cask nights.
Alexandria, Va.:
If I want to go to the Kool & the Gang whow at the Millenium Stage on Sunday, how early do I need to get there to get a decent seat?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Alexandria, this is Joe and as far as I'm concerned they should just take away all of the seats for the Kool and the Gang show. I mean, what's the point of sitting down to "Jungle Boogie." But, the show starts at 6 so if you really want a seat you should be there by 5:30.
Haircut lady:
I went from long to short with the help of Carine at Christophe. It will cost you, but she is great with any hair! Good luck.
The Going Out Gurus: More hair.
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.:
What do you guys think about the Velvet Lounge on U Street NW? Do you know of any other similar places where my friends and I can go to hear local bands play with no cover charge. We like alternative rock and trip-hop.
The Going Out Gurus: Rhome highly recommends Velvet Lounge. I've played there myself and seen other bands there. Amazing sound system and laid back semi-cruddy but endearing atmosphere. The place is like a closet though, crazy tiny, but it's worth going, especially when the band is good. Your other good bet would be Galazy Hut in Arlington.
For Mount Pleasant hair change:
I would totally recommend Remy at Molecule (around 20th and M), but it's doubtful she'd be able to get a cut/color appointment at many places for this weekend.
The Going Out Gurus: This hair business certainly gets you lot going.
Arlington, Va.:
What's brunch at the Smithsonian Castle like?
The Going Out Gurus: Ok.
Other Hot Holly 'Burg Babe '93, Hill, Washington, D.C.:
Howdy -- It is my 30th birthday next Wednesday. Yipee! I'm taking the day off, planning to go out to snazzy lunch downtown (have not decided where), get a manicure, and go to the National Museum for Women in the Arts to catch the Kahlo/Carr show.
I'm looking for a classy, hip, not-too rambunctious place to get a drink that night, with my hubby, about 9 p.m. I'm considering the Blue Room, Topaz -- but I'm totally open to all sorts of suggestions. If there is a must-do experience that night I am game. As far as I know, I'm only turning 30 once. We have no kids, so staying out late is definitely an option.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Hot Holly. This is Fritz. Wednesday night at the Blue Room is very chill, with house DJs spinning. Across the street, there's live music at Felxi for Sinatra Night, and Patrick de Santos performs at Chi-Cha that night.
Topaz is a little loud, but fun, and you might want to consider Bar Rouge, which is a little more subdued, volume wise, but still classy with delicious cocktails.
zGood salad:
I love the salmon niscoise (however you spell it) at Cafe Deluxe! Pair it with a nice glass of wine and I'll take it for lunch OR dinner!
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, yes, yes.
Alexandria, Va.:
So, this D.C. convention center w.o.w. event that's coming up -- is there parking there, or am I better off Metroing? And will there be a "special" rate of something rediculous like $20 to park?
-- Me
The Going Out Gurus: Alexandria, there are metered parking spots in the neighborhood, but nothing's easier than Metroing. Have fun.
The Sign:
What day is Sign of the Whale's Bloody Mary Bar?
The Going Out Gurus: Saturdays and Sundays, 11-4.
College Park, Md.:
Boyfriend's birthday is in two weeks, and he's into good food, so I'd like to take him out for a fancy meal. I'm looking to spend up to maybe $200 for both of us, and his food preferences run to "good and interesting" rather than a particular cuisine. Another consideration: we're both in our early 20s and I'd rather not go someplace too snobby where we'd get strange looks or treated less than well. Could you recommend a couple of places where I can still get a reservation for mid-March?
Also, I've heard about things called "Chef's tables," I think, where you get to watch some of your food prepared while you eat and have it explained to you. Seems silly to me, but I think he'd get a kick out of it. Are there any places in the area that offer that?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, CP. Probably the best-known chef's table treatment is at Laboratorio del Galileo. I haven't eaten there personally, but I understand it's some of the finest food the city has to offer, and you get to watch the chefs as they whip up their masterpieces. Unfortunately it's pricey; can't remember whether the price per head would exceeed your $200 limit. You could always call and check. Otherwise, you could just eat in the regular Galileo, the non-chef-watching part of the restaurant, which also very good. A lot of famous folks, including Grammy performers Bono and Billy Joel, tend to go there when they're in town.
You might also consider Citronelle or Kinkead's or 1789; while the crowds there may skew somewhat older, you will definitely get decent status even if you are in your twenties. For more ideas, take a look at the Post Dining Guide.
South Arlington, Va.:
Hey Gurus --
Any new restaurants to try in Adams Morgan on Saturday night before some drinks and dancing? I was leaning toward going to good 'ol Lauriol Plaza, but wanted to know if another spot could hit the right note should the LP wait be long (as usual!).
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: I read you South Arlington, loud and clear. It's Kate, I called Grill 88 and its opening for business tonight -- it's probably not a wise idea to go just yet but in time this looks to become a solid alternative. It's almost across the street from Lauriol on 18th, where 1910 used to be (and Mediterranean Blue before it). It's a new venture from the Felix/Spy Lounge boys starring the former chef from Addies. It's going to be pricier than Lauriol but I think you should press your noses against the glass or venture inside for a glass of wine after L.P. on Saturday and come back next week and tell the class what you discovered.
15th and L, Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus --
What's up with Drag Bingo at Chaos? I hear it's on, then I hear it's on hiatus. What's the deal?
The Going Out Gurus: Last I (Fritz) heard, 15th and L, it was on hiatus for the "Drag Games," which sounds like drag bingo with a game-show format instead of bingo.
dc:
Help- starsailor at 9:30 or mendoza line at black cat next wednesday night?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC, this is Joe and this is such an easy call. Go see Mendoza Line at the Black Cat. Starsailor has a big fat boring sound in my opinion. You'll be sleepy by the third song. And I really like the new Mendoza Line cd, "Lost in Revelry."
Glover Park, Washington, D.C.:
Hi Gurus. I have two questions:
Where can you go for live reggae with an Irie atmosphere?
Where do you suggest for Sunday brunch in Georgetown. Not Senses, not too pricey.
Thank you!
The Going Out Gurus: Crossroads in Bladensburg would be the easy suggestion but my (Rhome's) favorite for reggae is Bukom in Adams Morgan. For your G-town brunch, you might want to try Alexa's earlier encouragement (with links even!) to dive into our database. I'll toss you one to start though, Au Pied de Cochon.
Gala Crazy!:
Well, the Blarney Ball was great. The team of organizers put it together in five short weeks and it was a triumph! Can't wait till next year.
In the meantime, my group is very anxious to hit another soiree! Any information on the Black and White Ball? Any other black-tie charity events that you could recommend?
L
ove being swanky.
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: GC, we think the Black and White Ball sponsored by the Phillips Contemporaries at the Embassy of Finland has already passed us by. But here's Maura's tips on meeting people through other arts philanthropy groups. Or, take your pick of these swanky gatherings for charity in March, if your wallet can handle the $500 and up prices. One on this list I (Anne) can speak to is the Washington Film Society's Oscar party -- where the only people wearing tuxes are up on the big screen.
Somewhere, USA:
Any ideas for a moderately-priced seafood restaurant in the Fairfax/Burke area? Soem place nice, quiet, where my friend and I can catch up and enjoy some great food.
The Going Out Gurus: Can anyone help us out here? I'm not coming up with anything good.
Arlington, Va.:
Hey Gurus -- love your chat. Quick question: I'm supposed to go the IMAX theatre tomorrow night with some friends and I was wondering how late the box office was open on Friday. We're hitting a 5:45 show and want to know if we should get there before 5 to get the tickets? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington. This is Maura. I am assuming you are thinking Natural History's IMAX Jazz Cafe. I haven't heard of these selling out that quickly, but maybe some readers have had a different experience? The box office is open all day beginning at 9:45 a.m. if someone wants to play it safe and buy in advance.
Washington, D.C.:
My roommate and her boyfriend are looking for a budget-friendly getaway this weekend. They'd like to be outdoors -- camping, hiking, etc., and are willing to rough it. Any suggestions or Web sites they can visit for ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi D.C., Kate here. Looks like it'll be cold enough for winter camping. If they like to rough it and come back to a hotel/motel I'd suggest calling Sky Meadows State Park near pretty Delaplane, VA: 540/592-3556. This park has a rough and ready hike in camp ground and access to the Appalachian Trail.
Lauriol Plaza Person:
What about Caravan Grill right next door?
The Going Out Gurus: A good idea -- never crowded but not "new."
Reston, Va.:
Suggestions for Yikes; There is plenty to do out in Reston/Herndon! I am getting a little tired of the idea that things only happen in Arlington/Alexandria! Anyway, in Herndon Ned Kelly/Ned Devines is always a good time. Hard Times offers pool and darts same for Carpool. If you want small try Jimmy Old Town Tavern. If you want Jazz there is the Ice House Cafe. And as mentioned there is an endless selection of bars/restaurants at the Reston Town Center.
The Going Out Gurus: Ta, VA. We like Jimmy's.
Pluto:
My super awesome BF got tickets to a play at the Shakespeare Theater in D.C., so I want to treat him with a yummy meal. Can anyone recommend anything nearby? Also, a cool hangout afterwards would be awesome!
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) recommend Cafe Atlantico or perhaps good 'ol Jaleo, if you're prepared for a wait. Afterwards, maybe walk over to Fado or Coco Loco.
Glover Park, Washington, D.C.:
Hi Gurus. Love your chats. Don't know the name of this place, but what's the deal with the Turkish restaurant (still hasn't opened yet) on Wisconsin across the street from the Social Safeway (near R Street). The place has been empty for months and the sign says coming soon but it looks like it will never open.
thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Glover Park, I think its name is Divan. They are currently advertising for help and tables are in. I think we can assume that they will be opening soon.
For "bind man":
Take your wife to She Stoops to Conquer at the Folger Theatre! It's very light and fun and they still have tickets for Friday, Saturday at 2 and some for Saturday night. I'm going Friday and can't wait!
The Going Out Gurus: Another great suggestion, thanks.
silver spring hipster:
Where are the great record stores in town!? As fabulous as the music and concert scene in DC is, we seem underserved by our retail outlets. DCCD tries hard, but is limited - mostly by size, I think. Are there more I don't know about. It just seems we don't have that one store that you KNOW will have what your looking for like Philly, NYC, Boston, and even Flint, MI (hometown) do...
The Going Out Gurus: Hi SSH, this is Joe and unfortunately I think you're right about the lack of good record stores in town. Though I do think DCCD in Adams Morgan is pretty great and they always seem to have what I'm looking for. There's also NOW in Seven Corners, but they have a pretty limited selection. Still, you can occasionally find some interesting indie stuff there.
Rhome says Capitol City Records on U Street is his new favorite place for hip-hop, drum n bass, house and soul classics and rarities.
Any readers want to suggest a record store (besides Tower) in town worth checking out?
Arlington, VA:
Hi Gurus-
Since moving here from San Francisco, I haven't had any luck finding a good crepery -- one that offers both dinner and dessert crepes. Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Kate says Chez Antoine should be perfect.
Fairfax, Va.:
As for seafood, the only seafood-only place I can think of in the area is the Crabhouse in Fair Lakes. Aside from that, while it's a bit more expensive than they may want I'd suggest going to McCormick and Schmick in Reston and calling ahead for a reservation and requesting one of their private booths. There's reasonably priced food on the menu if you want to limit yourself slightly, and you'll get a good place to chat.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanky Fairfax.
18th & M, Washington, D.C.:
For the person looking for new restaurants in Adams Morgan: take a shot down U Street and go to Kuna. Wonderful Italian restaurant, moderately priced, with fab drinks. Service is friendly, and the whole experience will undoubtedly be a winner.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Kuna.
Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C.:
I'm planning the dinner for a bachelorette party next month. Could Daily Grill seat a party of 20?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) think they probably can, but obviously you won't know for sure without calling Daily Grill to ask.
The number at the 18th St. location is 202/822-5282.
To Seafood in Fairfax, Va.:
I am a fan of crabhouse on Fairfax County Parkway near Fairlakes shopping center (right next to 66 exit). Great seafood! Not pricey!
The Going Out Gurus: More cheers for the crabhouse.
Brunch at Perry's:
Is great and very entertaning! The food runs the gamut and is better quality than most brunches. Kinda pricey though, I think with drinks we ended up spending around $30/person. My boyfriend spent the whole time trying to figure out how it was possible the queens were not really women. They are quite talented.
The Going Out Gurus: This in from a girlfriend.
Hill, Washington, D.C.:
Skinny on the 4th Estate? Good happy hours on a Monday, or what?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Hill. This is Fritz. I've never been there for Monday happy hour -- only later in the week. But they did put out some food and offer drink specials. It's nice, well lit, has funky colors, but nothing truly special for happy hour.
Gold Coast:
A nit to pick about Adams Mill. I've had a great "laid back" time there on a Tuesday, but Thursday to Saturday nights, that is the last way that I would describe it. It is absolutely packed -- it took me over 15 minutes to get from the front of the bar to my friends at the back. They really should cut the number of people in the place at the door on weekends, it gets pretty ridiculous
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, GC.
Alexandria, Va.:
Hey Gurus, what do you think "semi-formal" usually means? Long dress or short? It's for a work-related awards dinner.
The Going Out Gurus: Semi-short, just not too short.
Washington, D.C.:
One of my best friends met her now fiancee at her very first (and only, it turned out, since you can't belong if you're coupled) Single Volunteers outing. She's in her mid-20s, he's in his early 30s. Great group -- and a great couple!
The Going Out Gurus: One pair's experience...
Fairfax, Va.:
I've been in The Bottom Line at 17th and I (I think) and they've had rasslin' on Monday nights. Try giving them a call.
The Going Out Gurus: A huge camel clutch for you, Fairfax.
Hair!:
Go to dcwebwomen.org under "resources for the rest of your life" and "hairdressers."
I'd recommend finding a good cutter, then do the color change next time. I like RPM or Randolph Cree on the Hill. Cree is a two-week plan ahead for appointments.
The Going Out Gurus: Here, baby, there, momma, ev'rywhere, daddy, daddy,
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair.
Alexandria, Va.:
Hi. I've gone to a couple of Single Volunteers events and have met a lot of nice, normal people. I highly recommend it.
The Going Out Gurus: More on the Single Volunteers
Record girl:
A little bit of a trek, but check out Music Liberated and Modern Music in Baltimore.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Record Girl. And for a bit more of a trek, you can try Plastic Fantastic in Ardmore, Pa. (10 miles west of Philly) Great selection of used cds and vinyl.
For Adams Morgan:
Shame on you Gurus for sending Adams Morgan girl to All about Jane and Daisy and Betsy Fisher for clothes. Obviously her Lane Bryant reference was over your head.
I'm a size 10 and can't properly fit into most of the stuff they sell at Jane and Daisy -- even one of the tiny clerks at Jane commented on how small cut the stuff was!
Unfortunately, there aren't too many boutiquey places with larger sizes, however, some chain places such as Liz Claiborne, Ann Taylor, Talbots, etc., sell larger sizes and the clothes are high quality and stylish.
The Going Out Gurus: O.K., we thought she wanted to avoid the chains. Our bad.
SVDC Newbie:
I have signed up for my first event this weekend. They seem to be a group of really genuine people. One comment though: The quota for women seems to fill up quickly, so if you see an event open for signups that you really want to attend, jump on it! Otherwise, I say bookmark their site and go to events/socials when you can. Take life by the horns, I say!
The Going Out Gurus: And more!
Looking for a Meterologist:
When do we get to start having happy hours outside again?? Did the groundhog see his shadow?
I'm hankering for a patio margarita at Red River Grill.
The Going Out Gurus: When it's not 40 degrees at 6 p.m. I (Fritz) would give it until at least April before the patios are populated again.
Fairfax, Va.:
Any suggestions for a late meal after catching a 10 p.m. concert at Blues Alley? What's the typical wait in the alley?
The Going Out Gurus: Walk up Wisconsin to Au Pied de Cochon, open 24 hours?
Wedding dresses:
I realize that this is the going out gurus page, but one never knows the depths of the wp gurus knowlege so here goes. A friend of mine is going to Vegas to get married and she is looking for a dress. Where does one purchase a wedding dress? She made an appointment with Neiman's already, but I wanted to offer another suggestion. Got any?
BTW, she is looking for something a bit edgy. (And a little bit of color is an option). Thanks in advance.
The Going Out Gurus: Normally people go to the typical bridal salons to buy their wedding dresses. But it sounds to me (Jen, a former bride) that your friend is looking for something a little different, which means the salons may not satisfy her.
She would be wise to try the evening gown departments at stores like Sax Fifth Ave., Nordstrom's, or even Ann Taylor depending on how formal she wants to be.
She might also consider looking at bridesmaids' dresses, especially if she wants color. In that case, a salon like Betsy Robinson's in Baltimore might have something up her alley since they carry garb for the bride and her 'maids. Good luck.
For CP B-Day Dinner:
Forget Galileo, I've heard way too many reports of spotty service and indifferent food. Go to Palena. I went there for my b-day had great service, outstanding food and it should be in her price range.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the recommendation. Got that, College Park?
RE: Chef's table:
Olives also has one - it's basically an eat-at bar situated right at the edge of the kitchen... I don't know if there's any price/meal limitations set on it. But I and my BF are big fans of Olives, so maybe you should check it out (16th and K St.). As for dual massages, my roommate recently booked a pair for her and her BF at Andre Chreky (also where i get my hair done). They have real nice, relaxing massage rooms and it's right around the cornre from the Jefferson, the Cap Hilton, and the St. Regis if you're looking to do it up right!
The Going Out Gurus: Oh, you're full of good advice. Great idea about the bar/chef's table at Olives which you don't have to pay anything fancy for.
For the person looking for lunch:
I like Cafe Deluxe on Wisconsin Avenue for brunch with the fam. They serve a very traditional breakfast food (eggs benedict, omlets, french toast, pancakes, etc.) plus sandwiches, in a rather upscale setting for not too much (I think entrees start at $9). And I believe there is another one somewhere in the Tysons area.
The Going Out Gurus: Kate here. I recently lunched at the Cafe Deluxe in Bethesda (Epcot D.C.?) and had a wonderful service despite our large table. Gorged on mussels.
Seafood in Fairfax:
Try RT's in Alexandria (or RT's Seafood Kitchen in Clarednon). A bit out of the way, but good food!
The Going Out Gurus: We seafood, we eat it, Fairfax.
Arlington, Va.:
I've been to Perry's drag brunch and all I can say about the food is ugh. The drag show is interesting but make sure that people know about it. My cousin took her father, he had no idea and freaked out. Drag queens aren't his thing. But the food was boring, it's a buffet line and it's kind of pricey.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for chiming in Arlington. Anyone else been and queen?
Petworth, Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus --
Dudes, can I get a quick kvetch?
Here goes: All you bars and people that don't know this, it's St. Patrick's Day, OK? And if you must abbreviate, Patty is an American abbreviation for a FEMALE name. Wanna be Irish? Then it's St. Paddy's day.
OK? So, no more sex changes for the poor man!
Thank you. You now return you to your regularly scheduled guruing.
The Going Out Gurus: Ok Pet.
Arlington, Va.:
Saturday night my friends want to go dancing. The problem is that we have a really mixed group of people. A couple of us love big hair '80s music and rap. While the other half really likes techno-esque dance music. Is there a place that has both (and preferably not one of the huge dance clubs like Nation, they tend to scare the '80s fans). Oh and not expensive.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Arlington. You can try the Zoo, which has rap/old school and '70s/'80s floors, or even Heaven and Hell, which has techno upstairs and retro dance music downstairs on Saturday, and a techno/"phat beats" combo on Friday.
Anyone else care to chime in with a club that plays hair metal AND techno?
Curious:
I heard that the Jackie Kennedy exhibit would be coming to the Corcoran this year. Any word on when?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Curious. Maura here. You're right, Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years arrives April 6 at the Corcoran. This is the same show that drew big crowds at the Met and in Boston, so if you want to go on a weekend, you might think of getting your tickets in advance.
Arlington, VA:
The review of Jordans that was just posted seems to indicate that diners should wait until the service problems are solved. Is that right? There seems to be a dig about the chef eating dinner in the center of the dining room during a busy time. So when should we go--when the chef is sated?
The Going Out Gurus: If you like watching chefs eating their own food then I say make haste.
15th and L, Washington, D.C.:
Have you guys been to Latin Jazz Alley in Adams Morgan? What's it like?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, 15th and L. Latin Jazz Alley is a small place, a bit off the beaten path, so it doesn't get the traffic that Habana Village does. It is, however, a good place to go dance to salsa, or catch live Brazilian jazz on Thursdays.
Real Record Stores:
If you're looking for records, two really awesome shops are Yesterday and Today Records on Rockville Pike, Joe's Record Paradise on Gude Drive (also in the ville of Rock) and some other awesome record store whose name escapes me but it's on Thayer Avenue in Silver Spring across from the Safeway.
The Going Out Gurus: All good ones. thanks.
Washington, D.C.:
Hello,
I was wondering if you could help me out? I want to find something to do one night this weekend to rekindle romance, but it can't be too expensive. Something out of the ordinary dinner-and-movie, nothing too tradtionally romantic would be cool. Thanks so much, I'm totally at a loss.
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) am not sure what's too traditionally romantic for you, but you could always visit the Washington Monument, which recently reopened. Looking at the view from up there should get your heart pumping.
If you forego the dinner part, but are willing to consider a unique movie experience, you could always see the midnight, Kick the Keg movie at Visions. It's "Casablanca," and you don't get much more romantic than that.
Woodside, Del.:
What's the lowdown on Angelo and Maxie's? A friend of mine has a gift certificate to use. What's the dress code/food/atmosphere like?
The Going Out Gurus: To be honest Woodside, a fellow guru and I walked in and walked out of the most recently opened Angelo & Maxie's here. It's a chain and feels like one - i.e. rather charmless. As for the food (basic steak fare), I (Maura) haven't ventured to try it, but check out our reader reviews and come back and write one of your own.
27Q:
Alrighty Gurus, ready for the ultimate challenge? Here it is. Where on earth can I go dance to cheesy rap in this town? You know what I'm talking about. I want to dance to Ja Rule, Master P and Nelly. I know, it's not cool, it's not trendy but it's fun and I'm willing to admit it -- can you guys help me out?
The Going Out Gurus: Since you're so honest and at peace with yourself, I (Rhome) will avoid clowning you, cuz I'm a good guru. All you gotta do is turn on WPGC 95.5 or WKYS 93.9 and listen to the party promo's. Your cheesy rap stalwarts are gonna be Dream, The Saint on Fridays, Flirt at MCCXXIII on Wednesdays, um... Legends on Fridays, Magic Cue. Oh good god the possibilities are endless.
Arlington, Va.:
Going out gurus -- I need your help! I know you can assist me on this one. For my birthday, we (a group of friends) are going to go out on Saturday. Since it's my birthday I get to pick where. But, as you can imagine, it's a lot of pressure to try to find a place that will work for everyone. So, let me give you the criteria. We all live in Arlington, so I want a place that's not too far away (no farther away than Adam's Morgan). I'd also like to find a laid back (but still nice) place where most of us can sit and still be able to talk (i.e., music not too loud). I'd say we should go to Gua-Rapo but we all just went there. The last part of the criteria is that it should not be TOO expensive to get in or to drink there. My friends and I agree, if anyone can figure this out for us, it's you guys.
Thanks in advance.
The Going Out Gurus: Okay, Arlington. This is Fritz. Again, I'm prefacing this with the warning that Saturday night is really not the best night to go out with a group of friends and sit around and talk, especially if you plan on arriving at your destination after 9 p.m. That said, I'm going to assume you're willing to pay as much as Gua-Rapo charges for drinks.
You can try the Blue Room (no cover if you get there before 10), Rendezvous Lounge, Topaz (although it gets loud later), Bar Rouge, Chi-Cha Lounge, the bar at the Henley Park Hotel, the Majestic Lounge (and the No. 9 Lounge) in Alexandria, or maybe even Gazuza.
For Gala Crazy:
It's a little ways off, but there's going to be a Casino Night benefit for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on April 27 at the Galleria downtown. Black-tie, open bar, buffet, mock gambling, silent auction, raffle AND a live band -- all for $85 (Yes, I'm coordinating it, but it sounds like it fits in with what Gala Crazy's looking for.).
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the info. Mark your calendars, black tie folks.
Washington, D.C.:
My co-workers and I were thinking about going out after work around 8:30 or 9. What would you recommend for a group of 30-year-olds to do in the D.C. area?
The Going Out Gurus: Are you looking for dinner and drinks or just the latter? This is Kate and although I may look 21 . . . Have you considered the wine bars at Mendocino or Tehoga in Georgetown, Grapeseed in Bethesda? You might enjoy the atmos at the bar area of West 24 too. Call ahead to Bistro du Coin and reserve a table downstairs -- it's twee but they do serve up a partie every night. Eighteenth Street Lounge often skews a bit older than barely legal.
You'll never escape the 21 Club, but you can out spend them, if not out fox them by reclaiming the always lively weirdness of a joints like
Silver Spring Hipster:
Theres a great record store on Rockville Pike. Almost positive the name is Yesterdays.
The Going Out Gurus: Ta hipster.
McLean, Va.:
Another girl at work and I are planning a bachelor party for a guy friend who isn't to sure his BM can handle the duty with enough flair. Any new ideas for a shy bachelor and his last-night out?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) can suggest the same route my husband took at his bachelor party: take the guy to a festive restaurant like Coco Loco. All the brazilian drinks and barbecued meat he can stand.
With all those drinks in him, Mr. Shy might be up for hitting strip clubs.
Other option, if you're willing to throw down some cash: try hitting the VIP room at a place like Platinum. You're required to buy bottles of wine or champagne that cost hundreds of dollars, but maybe it will be worth it for the Shy Guy's last chance at being a superstar.
Near Improv:
I asked Tom this last night but got stiffed. Know any good places to eat or grab a drink/appetizer near the Improv? We are heading there for the late show Friday and want to chill out before hand.
Thanks almighty gurus.
The Going Out Gurus: Why, no where better than across the street at the Mayflower bar. Ask to see the martini menu, but don't order #89 the mar-tea-ni. Blech.
Not Tunnicliff's:
I recently went to Tunnicliff's for some BMs and people watching, and while that was plenty to watch, the bloody marys were a disappointment. Unfortunately, Tunnicliff's has fallen from my favor.
The Going Out Gurus: Indeed.
Washington, D.C.:
What is there to do on Thursday nights in D.C.? I wanted to go dancing last thursday night and was surprised how empty clubs and bars were. Any suggestions, oh mighty gurus, for a funtastic Thursday night?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. Try the college nights at Platinum or Lulu's, '80s night at Heaven and Hell, house with Tom B. (I think) at Red, more house at T's Heaven at Andalu, the really great happy hour at the Saint for hip-hop and R&B, salsa at Habana Village ... there's lots to do, and this should get you started.
Alexandria, VA:
Dear Going Out Gurus,
Thank you for the excellent info last week about curling! My wife and I tried it at the Potomac Curling Club (www.curldc.org) and we had a blast. It combines all the good parts of shuffleboard, pool and bowling and places them on cold, slipper ice (much better to cool your frosty beverages by).
Keep the great ideas flowing!
The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like a bonspiel! Thanks Alexandria.
Jen on Penn:
What night is quiz night at Politiki?
The Going Out Gurus: Check it out Jen.
Record girl:
What about 12-inch in Dupont? Is it officially closed down now?
The Going Out Gurus: Bad news from Rhome: 12-inch is "Outta Here" (c) KRS-One. And I'll be danged if I missed the big going out of business sale they had. I spend too much on wax anyway. Chris Stiles of 12-inch is about to open up another venture there called DJ Hut I believe. We'll wait and see. Haven't been digging out in B-more in a minute. Music Liberated still got the good old school go-go? Miss Record & Tape Exchange in College Park too, I used to get busy there. Ummm... there's a fresh spot in near Wheaton Plaza that I've hit up too. Look at me giving up all my stashes!
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.:
Hello to you all! I am interested in taking some beginner yoga classes in D.C. -- any suggestions on where I can do this? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Oh yes we do -- and in your 'hood too. Get downward, dog!
The Going Out Gurus:
Ok, that's it. Sorry if we didn't get to your question. Try us again next week.
