Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002; 1 p.m. EST

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EST, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for joining us, don't you all look nice. This is Kate. I'll DJ this week's discussion. Let's trade tips on getting out and about in Washington's art and entertainment circles. I'll begin: We like the look of H.C. Westerman at the Hirshhorn, the sound of Jaguar Wright at Metro Cafe tonight, and think that little pistol Sasha Cohen might steal tonight's gold. Oh! And there's still time to enter to win tickets to Sunday's Mass Gospel Choir Show or seats for "Contact" too. Hope you get lucky.

We're all here: Alexa, Anne, Fritz, Jen, Joe, Maura, Rhome, and me -- who knows where Guffman is? Let's just have a good show.

Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus:
What's Staccato in Adams Morgan like? I'm meeting people there this weekend and have no idea what to expect. Dressy, casual, small, large, etc.? Do they serve food or is it just a bar? Thanks for your help!

The Going Out Gurus: It all depends, Georgetown. This is Fritz. Staccato has transformed its image a bit since last year, when it opened as a piano bar. They're now booking folk, jazz vocalists and other acts. It's a casual spot, but it can get crowded. If you can grab a seat in the small lounge upstairs, do so.

SciFiGirl: Gurus -- Just a note of thanks about some information you gave me me about the parking lot at Nation. My friend and I parked with no problem for the Judas Priest/Anthrax show on Sunday night, and it was totally worth the $10 it cost. The guys in that parking lot are super nice, and I was completely confident that they would look after my cheap little Japanese car.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello SFG, this is Joe and glad we could help. And glad your car was protected. But more important, what did you think of the show?

Bethesda, Md.: Today is a Third Thursday, and so there must be a gallery walk on the 7th St Arts corridor. How late do the galleries stay open, and which blocks are participating? Could you also recommend a few choice dining spots in the area?

(I can't find any information regarding this event on your Web site, although "First Fridays" are there).

The Going Out Gurus: Yup, Bethesda, it's Third Thursday, when the galleries on 7th Street stay open until 8 or so. While they may have some snacks and wine there, you might want to grab a bite at Cafe Atlantico, Jaleo or Austin Grill. As for galleries, I (Maura) would be sure to stop in to the Numark's latest show - Chan Chao photographs - for one. Enjoy.

Arlington, Va.: Hello Gurus!

A group of us are going to Dream Saturday night, and I was wondering what it's like during the 8-10 p.m. open bar/free admission hours? We're thinking of going early, but don't want to be the only ones sitting around with our free cocktails. Any advice?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Don't worry, Arlington. You're not the only ones with visions of free drinks dancing in your head. This is Fritz, and getting to Dream early to avoid lines is always a good idea. I've heard the valet parking is better, as well.

Petworth: So, I'm venturing out of the city tonight - a rarity!

Off to see the Saw Doctors at the Rams Head! (And still wondering why the 9:30 or the Black Cat never book these guys - they would be much much more appropriate venues!)

Anyhow, so I need some ideas. I've been to the Ram's Head before, and was not overly impressed with the food, But I don't know Annapolis geography well enough to figure out what else is in walking distance. Any places that I can walk to from there and get a good meal? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Petworth. This is Maura. Along West Street - next door to Rams Head - I like Tsunami for sushi and Fritz sings for Sean Donlon. We're both intrigued by 49 West. Anyone else have ideas?

Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: My best friend from high school, who recently came out of the closet, is going to be in town for a few days and wants to go out in Dupont Friday night. What would you suggest for a gay guy and a single girl in the area, somewhere that wouldn't be too loud, since this is the only chance we will have to catch up. Thanks, y'all are fabulous!

The Going Out Gurus: For starters, Capitol Hill, I (Jen) would recommend going out early. Some of the cool places your friend might enjoy are bound to get loud as the night goes on. So, if you're game for starting before 7 or 8, try hitting 18th Street Lounge (I've been there early and during that time frame, it makes the perfect setting for a chat), Gazuza, or Dragonfly (again, be there EARLY, otherwise it will be loud and there will be a line). As the night wears on and you become hungry, but still want your peace and quiet and a vast selection of beers, consider heading to the Brickskellar.

Waldorf, Md.: Married couple in their early 30s looking for two sorts of places within the DC Metro area -- the first is a poetry club a la "Love Jones" and the second is a Jazz club where we can also get a decent meal in comfort. I liked Blues alley but the seats are too tight so I would like something that is a little more comfortable (and elegant -- the jazz club that is, not necessarily the poetry club).

Do you have any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Rhome here, and I have good news for you! Check out my homegirl Deheija at Bohemian Caverns on Wednesday night. She runs the poetry open mic there and the talent is usually backed by a live jazz band - two birds with one stone. There's a lot of poetry around town (still working on that round-up folks) but this one will give you that romantic type flavor I think you're seeking. They do serve food too. Make sure you head down U Street a few more blocks to Twins. Not sure the level of elegance you're looking for, but the jazz is always great. Let us know how it goes.

Washington DC: We have some folks visiting this weekend from rural New York who want to go to an Afghan restaurant. Have any of you tried the Afghan Grill at Calvert and Connecticut recently? We'd like to stay in town so that after eating we can take a night tour of the Mall and the monuments. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: I'm afraid I don't know too much about the Afghan Grill, except that Kate says it's always busy. Let's ask the group. Who knows anything?

Birthday!, McLean: Hi all!
It's my birthday this Friday and I want to make everyone happy with our partying location.I am looking for a cool, comfortable atmosphere for us to hang out and drink. I want a place to accommodate my non-clubby friends but no holes-in-the-walls since I bought a nice, new outfit. I am thinking Clarendon Ballroom but would like to hear your ideas. (arlington, Alexandria, DC). Thanks!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Happy B-day, McLean. This is Fritz, and Clarendon might be okay for your mixed crowd. They have a band on Friday night, but the bar is long and gorgeous, and plenty of seating is available for those who don't want to dance. In that immediate area, you might also try Clarendon Grill, although it gets crowded on the weekends.

In Alexandria, there's always Murphy's or the Majestic Lounge.

Rockville, MD: Hi Gurus,

Being a swing fanatic, you guys got my attention few weeks ago when there was some discussion on another Timpano's opening in Virginia.

I know tonight is supposed to be swing night with the fab RKO at the Rockville location but I was informed (hopefully erroneously) that Timpanos is closed.

Can any of you verify this info. I will be extremely upset if it's true.

The Going Out Gurus: Don't worry, Rockville. Swing night at Timpano (with the fab Radio King Orchestra) is going ahead as scheduled.

Dupont: Hey Gurus,
Are there any places to listen to classical music in Alexandria or Arlington on Saturday afternoons? If not, can you suggest something else to do before dinner that is a little out of the ordinary?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Dupont, this is Joe and here's our list of upcoming classical concerts. If any one knows about specific Sat. afternoon performances in Arlington or Alexandria, help Dupont out and send in the information.

dc: where is the best place to go and study/read andget some coffee also....?

The Going Out Gurus: DC, the places I (Alexa) enjoy for those purposes are these: Misha's in Old Town and the Barnes & Noble in Georgetown where you can sit on a high stool in the window and watch M Street go by.

Arlington, Va.: Fritz, your night was great! When are you and Eric DJ-ing again?

The Going Out Gurus: Not for a while, with our busy schedules and all. (And there's a rule about how often you can do Hump Night, anyway.) Glad you liked it.

Don't Miss Your Last Chance for Olympic Glory: In the midst of the Olympics, I just wanted to alert folks in the DC and B'more areas to a great chance to try out CURLING. The 40-year old Potomac Curling Club just opened a beautiful new curling facility -- the National Capital Curling Center -- next to the Gardens Ice House in Laurel. This up-coming weekend, February 23 and 24, PCC will be hosting a grand opening open house from 2-6 on Saturday and 2-5 on Sunday. The event is free and all members of the public are welcome to come and give curling a try. Wear warm comfortable clothes and rubber soled shoes (like sneakers). Check out the PCC web site for directions and other information about curling at www.curldc.org

The Going Out Gurus: Watched it at ESPNZone last night, I think the curling bug may have bitten me. I might show up in a fleece and some Chuck Taylors!

Bethesda, MD: I'm going to a 25th Birthday Party tomorrow night at Meze in Adams Morgan. Never been there before...wondering what the gurus think of this place and wondering what I should wear. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda and Happy Birthday. I (Maura) think Meze sounds like fun and is nothing you need to make a big fashion fuss over. You don't want to look like a bum -- it's your big day afterall -- just be able squeeze in with the martini, tapas loving crowd.

Washington, D.C. : Can you steer me towards some D.C., or close by Maryland and Virginia restaurants that can host banquets of about 100? I’m looking for something classy, but not too expensive (about $50 per plate would be great). Something along the lines of B Smith’s. I have looked in to most hotels in the area and they are just too much money!
Thank you!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. I (Jen) am not 100 percent sure of the prices at the following places, but I know they have private seating. So check out Old Ebbitt Grill, 1789, Morton's (I believe the one in Georgetown has a private dining area) or Maggiano's in Friendship Heights. Hopefully one of those will fit the bill.

Capitol Hill: Hi, I was wondering if you could recommend a place for a decent pedicure that's not terribly expensive--maybe around $40ish? I'd prefer around Capitol Hill, but will go elsewhere if it's a great deal. Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Capitol Hill. Maura again. Our colleague Kim was just bragging about a fabulous pedicure for $35 - including leg massage. Of course, I'm forgetting the name. "Nails" is in the name and it's right by the Four Seasons in Georgetown. Anyone else clued in to this find?

ballston: Rhome,

I'm jonzen for Popeyes again. I've done some in Reston and Arlington. Any other locales you could suggest?
Maybe 14th street north of thomas circle?
If anyone has gone to this one, let me know. Its the closest to where I type!

mmmmm, biscuits!

ps, anyone try the new buffalo nuggets?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Ballston, this is Joe and let me tell you that Rhome is really a Popeye's pretender. He more of a Church's guy, and when no one's looking, I'm pretty sure he sneaks out to KFC. (He thinks George from Seinfeld hangs out there.) The Popeyes on 14th is a longstanding favorite, but you can't beat the service at the one on Wisconsin near Nebraska. Let's face it, you can't go wrong at Popeye's. We need more of them!

Arlington, VA: Hoping you or the chatters can solve a DC trivia question... what is the largest restaurant in DC (by seating capacity)? We started talking about it after a night at Lauriol Plaza. Some of our other guesses included Gordon Biersch, Maggiano's & some of those waterfront tour-bus stops, such as Phillips.

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, You've already got me (Alexa) having way too much fun with this idea, so I'm forgetting to other questions. Let's get some shouts from the folks at home. In the meantime, I may have to do some research and get back to you.

SciFiGirl: I thought that the Judas Priest/Anthrax show was...well, what I expected. JP isn't the same without Rob Halford, and their new songs weren't all that great. I was disappointed that they didn't sing You've Got Another Thing Coming, but overall it was really great seeing them in a club arena. Haven't seen them since I was in highschool in the mid-80's when they got really successful and sold out the Cap Center. I thought Anthrax was pretty bad, but I wouldn't tell them, because the lead singer got into a fist fight with an audience member who was flipping him off. I can't repeat his comments in a family forum, however! The Nation is a nice space to see a show, good sound, nice staff. A good experience, all around.

The Going Out Gurus: See, that's the kind of report we want to hear. Nice work, SFG.

Arlington, VA: Anyone been to brunch at Sen5es in Gtown? If so, how is it? Thanks. Looking for a brunch spot on the water (canal or river) in Gtown that isn't Sequoia. Thank you.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington, Kate here. Kim O'D. and I enjoyed a long lunch at Senses a few weeks ago, though were surprised to discover it is three courses and prix fixe ($21). It's a light-filled space. The food was delicious and I'd argue they pour the best cup of coffee in town. I selected pear soup and seafood french toast and took dessert home in a doggie bag.

It sounds like you're looking for a room with a view. Senses has a lot to offer but a view ain't one of them. That said, it's just so lovely and the food streets ahead of Tony & Joe's, Sequoia, etc.

DC: I am heading to Potomac Yards for a movie tonight and I want to catch a nice dinner (preferably seafood) before the show---but I can't for the life of me think of any restaurants over there. Do I have to go over to Old Town for some good eats?

The Going Out Gurus: That's easy, DC. A Legal Seafoods just opened on Jeff Davis Highway (Route 1) at Crystal City. 23rd Street I (Alexa) think. Couldn't be better as presumably it's on your way. Their phone number is 703/415-1200.

Birthday, Mclean: Thanks!
What is Majestic Lounge?

Does anyone go out to Lemur Lounge (Friday nights at Casablanca in Old Town)? It is super fun for those folks who feel they are growing a bit too old for Buzz or the Edge, but still love techo. Mellower beats, strong drinks, sheesha and only a $5 cover. It is in a Morroccan restaurant so the atmosphere is dark and plushy and very chill. (tonight we are going to dinner there first.)

The Going Out Gurus: Majestic Lounge is a great little spot on Mount Vernon Ave. (not actually in Old Town) with board games on tables, funky lights, couches and a great bar. Upstairs, the Number 9 Lounge is more modern (it's sleeker, as my boy Eric Brace says) but also a fun place to hang out for the night.

Lemur is cool. I (Fritz) haven't been recently - I went closer to when it opened - but I hear good things about it from a variety of people.

Fairfax, VA: Afghan Restaurant on Route 1 in Alexandria is really good for the person asking about Afghani restaurants. They have a buffet at lunch, not sure about dinner. It's yummy!

The Going Out Gurus: Yes that's right. They do.

Base Head, Washington, DC: Is there a place around here for some quality drum and bass and/or down tempo tunes?

The Going Out Gurus: I smell another round-up for my (Rhome's) to-do list. Off the top of the nugget...
Sunday Sessions at Kaffa House. Don't go there early unless you want to catch the punk showcase. Tangent is every other Wednesday at U-Turn (1942 11th St, 11th & U Streets). Blue Room has drum and bass on Thursday and generally electronica downtempo type vibes the rest of the week. Lemur Lounge is Fridays at Casablanca in Old Town and includes drum & bass among its styles, depending on the dj. Very loungematic. Sesto Senso has been running a broken beat/house/bossa/trip-hop thing for the last couple of months on Saturday nights. Been meaning to check that out.

American University, Washington, D.C.: Are there any places for an under 21-year-old to karaoke? My best friends are coming to visit and I am still a few months shy of 21.

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, the obstacles of being under 21. Don't worry, you'll get there soon enough. Until then, Fritz tells me (Jen) that you may be able to karaoke at Cafe Japone (since it's a restaurant) or Renzo's in Silver Spring. Give one of these places a call and see if they'll let an under-21-year-old sing a few bars without having booze. Good luck.

Bethesda, Md.: Hi all! Hope you guys can help us beat the February Blues. My three roommates and I (all 23-year-old party girls) are looking for something fun to do this weekend. Do you know of any pub crawls, festivals, wine-tastings, etc. that we would want to go to? We'd like to go to an organized event, rather than flitting from bar to club to bar. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. Conveniently, this weekend in Mount Airy you can sample vintages at George's Extravagant Wine Tasting while remembering our first president. Pack a picnic, and please be careful driving home. If it's variety in drink you crave without having to traipse around, visit some wine bars. And when I (Anne) think of something fun to beat the February blues, my instinct is to a) get outside while it's daylight and b) get to a Washington Improv Theatre show. This Saturday is the last night of their February run at DC Arts Center.

Cleveland Park, DC: I wanted to know if you guys know anything about local bridge clubs, or maybe somewhere to take lessons. I have played a little bit with some "senior" relatives of mine - but would like to learn more about the game, and possible play with some younger people. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Cleveland Park, this is Joe and when I was a kid my parents pretty much forced bridge on my siblings and me so that they would have a ready supply of players whenever they needed them. It's a great game, though now I only really know the basics and only play when I'm home with them. All of that said, I have no idea if there are any local bridge clubs, especially for beginners. Any readers care to help out with this one?

AlexandriaVA 22312: Another good possibility for an Afghan Restaurant is Kabul Caravan on Wilson Blvd in Rosslyn - a block up from Red Hot and Blue - and close enough to DC to do a mini tour of the sites.

The Going Out Gurus: Watch it! Hot tip coming through.

Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.: Where can a girl get a good fish fry for lent in D.C.? I haven't been able to find one.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Cleveland Park. It's Alexa. Have you been to Maine Avenue or Webb's, Mickey D's for a filet o'? More up market, though, is Johnny's Half Shell for fish and chips.

WDC looking for Seated Event: There is a great book called "130 Places to Meet"--It is put out by the Washington Council of Agencies (www.wcanonprofits.org) From what I remember, it was helpful and pretty inventive about meeting/event locations.
Also, I hosted a seated dinner for 60 at Smith and Wollensky's a few months ago and it was great- quite and the staff was easy to work with--might be a little small for 100. Good luck!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Washington. Check it, "Seated."

Downtown, DC: Where's a good place for happy hour today, downtown, for a bunch of girls in their early twenties? We don't plan on going until about 6pm, so I know a lot of places will be crowded. We're celebrating a birthday and must have fun!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, D.C. This is Fritz. With the weather like this, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention spots like Mackey's, Tequila Grill and Gordon Biersch, all of which have outdoor seating. (Whether they'll bring the chairs out for the afternoon is the question.) Tequila Grill gets a decent crowd at happy hour, and last I heard, they still have a great happy hour at Coco Loco, plus free salsa lessons at 7 p.m.

va: i need to decorate and furnish my apt....and need cheap stuff....where can i find inexpensive furniture and items for my apt?

The Going Out Gurus: Virginia (and this answer goes to the Alexandria poster too) - have you scoured area flea markets for finds? It's a great way to find something a little more original for a lot less. Here's our where to flea roundup. My (Maura's) advice might be to skip Bethesda fleas and take a trip to Frederick for more second-hand finds. Check out area warehouse sales (see the link for "where the deals are") for more ideas. In town try Apartment Zero and Home Rule for accent pieces that can make a room sparkle. Miss Pixie's and Goodwood are also good bets.

Bethseda Md: Hey Im going to that same party at Meze too! I heard the guy whos birthday it is is the coolest guy in the world! Should be fun!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Can I come?

va: do u know of any place in the are that teaches kendo? japanese fencing

The Going Out Gurus: No can do kendo. Can do taekwondo. You who can do kendo, please do. (Chime in.)

South Arlington : Don't want to hog the chat, but to the person going to Potomac Yards: the Legal Sea Foods on Rte. 1 is very small and does not take reservations. I have yet to go there during prime dinner hours becuse of the 45-minute wait. Portofino's and Chi-Cha Seafood Bistro on 23rd St. are not bad, and there is a LSF at National in the terminal.

Gurus, chatters, how do you convince a restaurant to take reservations?

The Going Out Gurus: Chat hog!

Washington, DC: Hi there-

I am thinking about getting a group together for my boyfreind's bday to go to Bohemian Cavern? Any thoughts out there about this place? The reviews I have heard are mixed but I am trying to be creative?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Rhome here. The Caverns has three parts, the club on the upper level, the restaurant on the middle level and the jazz club down below. I've heard mixed reviews on the nightclub section myself, you could probably get a better version of what they're trying to achieve at Zanzibar, if you don't mind a big crowd. Jazz in the Cavern itself is almost always guaranteed to be good, check the listings to spy any favorite artists you might want to see. I've heard good things about the food too.

Crystal City:
Going to the 9:30 club next week to see the Go Go's (I'm an 80's kid). What time does the opening act ususally start and about what time does the main act come on-stage? Is it standing room only or are there seats? Should I get there early?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, '80s kid, this is fellow '80s kid Jen. I too will be at The Go-Go's show next week, despite the fact that my husband thinks the tickets are not worth $35. Pish posh. I feel I won't have lived until I hear "Beatnik Beach" live.
On weeknights, 9:30 club doors open at 7:30. Looks like there's only one opener (Darcie Miner), so I'd expect her to hit the stage around 8:45, with Belinda and the girls to follow around 10-ish. Check the 9:30 club Web site the day of the show and for more specific info.
There are some seats up in the balcony, but most folks will be standing. If you want to sit, I'd get there early. But I can't imagine you'll want to stay seated at a Go-Go's show. See you there.

Brandywine, Md.: Would like to find a nice restaurant in Old Town, medium price but fun. Can you help?

The Going Out Gurus: Brandywine, whenever I get a question like yours, I say two things. South Austin Grill and the Majestic. Both will suit, I think.

Petworth: Oh, oh, I have to rant now. Just read the question about Sen5es.

We went there for brunch last Sunday (the DH and me). While the food was good enough, it was fixed price, $21, juice, coffee and such NOT included.

And the service... perhaps I am a snob. But, the hostess/waitress was great, but she could not keep up with the whole room alone. So the manager (we think) was trying to help out. But, he brought us (and charged us for) juice we didn't order. He forgot our coffee and then ignored us for 10 minutes. And the busser could not keep up, so dirty plates sat around forever. We never got bread. Getting coffee refills was almost impossible. Oh, and when a couple with a baby came in, all 3 people on the floor crowded around them and talked for 6 minutes (yes, I timed it. I was really annoyed by then), ignoring everyone else in the place.

I really recommend against going there.

The Going Out Gurus: No bread, Petworth? Hate the idea that you paid for juice you didn't order. Consider writing a letter, if you're truly steamed. The chef, Bruno Feldeisen once ran the bread/pastry kitchen at the Four Seasons in Toronto so he's probably seasoned in responses. It is a small establishment, and if busy, one server would be inadequate.

Petworth: Oops, sent in my whole anti-Sen5es rant, and forgot my recommendation for brunch in Georgetown - Cafe La Ruche is great!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Petworth -- nice to have a little sunshine after the rain.

va: i want to know more about the dupont first fridays? where should one go?

and is this better than the 7th st. 3rd thursdays..which u recommend? and are all free?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Virginia. Maura again. Both events are free and usually pretty fun. I'd say Dupont's First Fridays has the bigger turnout, as it also has more galleries. Just head up to R Street and Connecticut and follow the crowds. But who says you have to choose between the two? Why not try both nights on for size?

Arlington, VA: Hey there Gurus! I hope you can help me. I'm looking for a bar where I can hear country music. Live bands or djs - I don't care as long as it's fun! And dancing would be a nice plus. Last criteria - preferably in Arlington/ALexandria. Any suggestions? I'm really missing my country roots up here in DC and could use a night of raucous dancing and country music.
Thanks so much!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. This is Fritz. Here's a brief selection: Alexandria's Tiffany Tavern is one of the best bluegrass spots in the area. Nick's, also in Alexandria, has live country (and dance lessons) most of the week. Iota books plenty of country bands, as well as roots rock. And JVs, located in Falls Church, is a honky-tonk that's certainly worth the drive.

Annapolis MD: For the Ram's Head goer - I agreee, the food there leaves much to be deisred. Go for the beer and the show.
As suggested above, Tsunami and Sean Donlan's are both fantastic, and Tsunami has expanded their restaurant, and the non-sushi items are great too. For good Mexican food, cross the street to El Toro Bravo. Their 'ritas are great too! If you feel like walking some, head down Main street and go to Cafe Normandie for crepes, or to Mangia's upstairs for Italian. There are a lot of great restaurants in Annaplis, the ones listed here are better for quick dinner before a show at Ram's head. If you want class/fancy, try Aqua Terra - wonderful American/Seafood, Piccola Roma (Italian), Maria's (Italian). Joss has amazing sushi and Castlebay has great Irish food as well.
Have fun!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Annapolis. My (Maura's) thoughts on the fare at El Toro Bravo don't run as high as yours, but we like the suggestions. Thanks!

Orange Line: Is The Improv in walking distance of the Metro Center stop?
Also, how late does the Metro run one weekends (if I go to a 10:30 Improv show, will I be able to get home on Metro?).

The Going Out Gurus: No need to switcheroo Orange Line. This is Kate and I say get off at Farragut West and walk two long blocks up Connecticut to the Improv. You can almost see the flags of the Mayflower Hotel (opposite) from the Metro exit.

Brithday! Mclean: If you are sick of me posting yet...I have an idea for the 23-year old party girl. Clarendon Ballroom is having a Mardi Gras thing on Saturday. Their Web site is still in the works but whoever answers the phone there is really nice.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, McLean. We have the details right here.

V-day Date?: Did anything ever come of that Valentine's blind date you guys were trying to set up last chat?

The Going Out Gurus: We had several hopefuls (petite brunettes all), but the gentleman caller left the ladies waiting a little too long.

va: i live in va now but is thinking about moving to dc....do u think it's a good idea....i now have a large studio to myself which i pay low 800s....could i find one similar to that in dc....in a nice area like dupont circle....and would people recommend moving to dc...rather than living in va?

The Going Out Gurus: Hmm, maybe our experienced renters/readers should weigh in on this. But for low 800s in Dupont Circle, you probably couldn't get much more than a bus shelter. Still, some people have sweet deals. Anyone want to let va know what to expect in the DC market?

Tysons, Va: Hi sorry this is so late I got caught in a meeting, I need suggestions for Sunday Brunch this Sunday, some place casual but nice, in Northern Va ares? (It is a first date)

The Going Out Gurus: There's a great brunch to be had at the Carlyle Grand in Shirlington. And I (Alexa) think that's a fab spot for a first, second and third date.

Pedicures r us: Cassianna Day Spa in Arlington does a very nice aromatherapy pedicure AND manicure for $35-- a steal! Cassianna is at Rt 50 and Glebe.
Ask for Lien.

The Going Out Gurus: Will do!

RE: Banquet for 100: For the person trying to setup a banquet for 100 - there's a great website & magazine (i promise i have no affiliation) that gives lots of info on party/event planning in DC. web site is http://www.where-events.com/ (where you can sign up for a free magazine) & it's got a lot of good details for starting the process.

The Going Out Gurus: But only if you promise.

NW Washington: My friend and I want to go dancing this weekend. We are looking for somewhere not outrageously expensive or with too much attitude at the door. We like techno, house, electronica and hip-hop (no boring Top 40). Any location in NW is fine.

The Going Out Gurus: If you're up for staying out late, definitely try Red. It's not too expensive and will likely satisfy your groove cravings. You might also consider Andalu or 18th Street Lounge, if you can hack the crowds. Or, if you're not too concerned about coughing up the $10 cover, you'll probably like Platinum.

Alex, Andrea & Virginia: Hi All! I know that Politiki of the Hill sometimes is very friendly with the deaf community (they hired a deaf bartender who worked upstairs occasionally)... any other places that you all know of that is especially friendly toward the deaf? Thank you and have a great day!

The Going Out Gurus: The Kennedy Center has signing performances and will answer questions on TT lines. Thanks for the tip on this 'tender. Terrific.

Glover Park: I'm looking for the best wings in the area (and HOT!). I thought the Post did a story a little while back, but I did a search and nothing turned up. Any suggestions? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I (Alexa) had some good ones at Old Glory recently.

McLean, VA: Hi Gurus. My mom's coming down to visit this weekend. She's into nature and outdoorsy activities, so if Saturday's going to be nice I'd like to find something cool to do during the day. She's been to alot of the usual places before, so I'm trying to find something better than a walk around the Mall or hiking in Great Falls. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey McLean, what a fun plan! How far do you want to drive for your outdoors adventure? Theodore Roosevelt Island isn't strenuous hiking, but it is a quick way to explore nature when you just have a few hours. If you want to make it a longer day trip, the Shenandoah offers more trails than you can shake a walking stick at. And I (Anne) also like jetting up 270 to Catoctin Mountain Park. It's quieter, sorta quicker, and full of satisfying views and rock piles.

Alexandria, VA: To the person in VA looking for furniture/decorations:

IKEA!

The new store is huge and has just about everything. If you don't mind some funky colors, it's definitely the place to go (except on weekends - parking sucks).

The Going Out Gurus: Good IDEA.

foggy bottom: I'm meeting some friends at MCCXXIII tonight for happy hour. I've never been....what's the dress like...atmosphere...food?
Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: (In my best commercial-on-WPGC voice): Dress fashionable - no athletic wear, please! The atmosphere at 1223/MCCXXIII is very upscale, with lots of black and well-cut suits. Gorgeous decor. Expensive drinks. An attitude that some would dismissively call "Euro."

You can read a restaurant review here.

Brunch in Northern Virginia: One more thing to add about my favorite restaurant, Carlyle Grand Cafe. They have this amazing creation called the "call ahead wait list" Just call them in advance, they will take your name and let you know how long the wait is. Then you show up at that time and are usually seated immediately or within minutes. I wish all restaurants used this system!

The Going Out Gurus: We too.

Jonesing for Popeyes: There are 2 out a little farther if you're really feeling adventurous. One on 123 in Vienna and one on Rt. 50 in Fairfax. The one in Vienna is in a strip mall - with Giant and Michaels and the one is on Rt. 50 before you get to 236.

Anyone tried the new buffalo style chicken bits?

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip. Haven't tried the bits.

moving to dc: Well, if this is any help, I'm in a small (420 sq ft) basement studio near Tenleytown (Nebraska & Conn area). 15 min walk to metro. Three small windows, all barred over (firehazard?). And its $500/month. Going rate for the basement places on my street is $650 to 700 and I got a deal b/c I've known the landlord since I was 4 months old. So yeah.. $800 ain't gonna by you much. But as a former small town chick (bounced around east TN and SW VA for 27 years before coming here) the city is great. I love where I live (if not the apt itself)

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks neighbor.

Dupont Living: Living in DC is great and Dupont is even better! So much to do, so accessible to everything. I say do it!

As far as finding an apartment, there seems to be a lot on the market right now. Just walk around the area and look for apartment rental signs. Unfortunately, rent will most likely be more expensive now. You might be able to negotiate as many landlords would rather fill a rental for less money than leave it empty. I have been in my apartment for a number of years, so I can't tell you the difference. Good Luck!

The Going Out Gurus: More from our Got Plans realtors!

Toronto Ont: Wer'e a Canadian couple who'll be vacationing in Washington next weekend. (March 1) We have a young son who is really obsessed with trains, both real and model. We won't have a car so we're restricted to metro. Does anyone know of any train exhibits at any of the museums. I heard there was a railroad hall at The Museum of American History. Any others?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Toronto and an early welcome to Washington. For train sights, do stop into the National Museum of American History for their train display (I - Maura - like the 1401 Locomotive). The National Building Museum's new exhibition "On Track" is more about urban mass transit, but does feature subway and trolley car installations.

If you're at American History, stop across the Mall and check out the Smithson Land Express miniature trains which circle the eaves of the Smithsonian's Arts and Industries building. Enjoy your trip.

DC: Don't eat at the Caverns - way over priced and pretty bland. Go somewhere else to eat and then go downstairs for music - although if you don't eat there there's a nasty cover and at least a $12. drink minimum. The music's good but you can get it elsewhere...

The Going Out Gurus: Where do you suggest they eat?

Annapolis Again: Note I said Good - not great. I agree with you Maura.
If they really want Mexican, go to Mexican Cafe on Bay Ridge, near the Giant.
But, I have heard that El Toro Bravo recently got a lot better - new chef or some such, and am heading over to check it out this weekend, myself. I'll let you know next Thursday!
Also really good - El Salvadorean food - from the food cart in the parking lot of the Goodwill on Hilltop. Seriously. Amazing. They just opened a restaurant in Edgewater too.
Wow, I need to go there right now, just thikning about it.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Annapolis. It's all good to hear.

U Street NW: For reasonably priced cool furniture and home accessories I like:

Millenium on U Street
Rough and Ready on 14th St.
Good Eye on Wisc. Ave in Friendship Heights

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, good eye, U Street.

Bethesda, MD: Can we discuss Chipotle?

The Going Out Gurus: What do you feel like saying, Bethesda? What's on your mind?

downtown dc: ORANGE LINE
I think the Farragut North exit is the one that lets you out at Connecticut not the West. You have to change trains for that one.

GURU'S
am planning on going to dinner with friends on Sunday in either DC or VA. Just a question but what's Clarenden Grill like on Sundays? Food, Music, dancing?

The Going Out Gurus: Seriously, I ride the rails and F's North and West both have exits on Farragut Square on Connecticut Ave.

Clarendon Grill is busy seven days a week -- I'm not sure if they have live music on Sundays though. For the wing freak -- they are very good here: sticky and hot.

20011: For good used furniture, don't miss Ruff 'n' Ready. 14th and S? or is it T?

The Going Out Gurus: Here's all the info on Ruff 'n' Ready. Get set. Go.

RE: seafood by potomac yards: wow--thanks for the help. I hope my date likes the seafood/movie night. I think we will skip Legal until they take reservations and try one of the places S. Arlington recommended. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Maybe you and S. Arlington should get married.

Dupont: Has anyone heard or been to Abyss yet?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Dupont. This is Fritz. I've heard about Abyss, a club that's taken over the old Tracks 2000 location, but haven't made it out in the two weeks it's been open. Eric B. and I were talking about going there on Friday, so I might have a report next week. I'd love to hear from anyone who has been.

Fairfax,VA: Hello gurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrus!!Love ya!!Question:
Can you tell me of a sorta big band playing in Arlington on Saturday and a rather unknown local band playing in Fairfax that same night? it was a quiz question i got and i cant find the listings....thanks!
ps
Can you tell me anything about Cafe Salsa? I've heard its Puerto Rican food but very wary about it!

The Going Out Gurus: Suddenly, Got Plans? has turned into Stump The Band. Well, consider me stumped because I (Jen) can't find the answer to your question either. However, I must say that I think the question is flawed. What's a "sorta" big band? And isn't every local band playing in Fairfax basically unknown? This quiz is rigged!
As for Cafe Salsa, I have not been there but perhaps one of our hungry and knowledgeable readers has?

Washington, D.C. : Gurus:

My favorite place is Aroma -- but I feel like when I walk in the folks yell "Norm!" What places are like that? In particular, where a guy in his mid 30s can hang, and if the time is right, put the smooth moves on some lovely lady.

The Going Out Gurus: Norm! Anne here. Astonishingly, Fritz and I were of like minds on this one. You're dead on with Aroma. We came up with Felix and Fox and Hounds, and before Fritz even knew the full question, he said, Capitol Lounge is a place where everybody knows your name.

Fairfax, VA: Sunday Brunch at Mango Mike's in Alexandria used to be lots of fun. Live Calypso music and all!

The Going Out Gurus: Is it still fun? Anyone?

Alexandria, Va: Heading to the museums this Sunday. Of the museums on the mall, which one would you choose to stop at for lunch? I know there's one or two that have nicer "cafe" type restaurants but I don't remember which ones.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Alexandria. Great idea to hit the museums. I (Maura) would have to say the National Gallery still wins me over for museum food. I like the Pavilion Cafe in its Sculpture Garden for a quick bite and any of the cafes inside the museum are pretty good. Here's Alexa's dining on the mall roundup.

Washington, DC: Hey Gurus,
Do you or the chatters have any recommendations for watching the Olympic Hockey this weekend? Looking for a
bar for the USA/Russia match that will be filled with hockey fans cheering LeClair jammin the puck by Khabibulin and hopefully for USA in the gold medal match on sunday.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC. Unfortunately, Ben, our resident hockey zealot, seems to be away from his desk. And to be honest, we're all a lot more fired up about the curling events. So much cooler than all of that jumping and triple-lutzing. But, I'm sure most of these 52 sports bars will be showing the game.

Arlington, VA: Some of my grad school friends are heading into town this weekend. I want to show them something different, and we're looking for a place to chill out and catch up prior to moving through U street later on Saturday night. I was thinking about the Red Room at the Black Cat, but not sure if we'd be welcome -- we generally fall into the baseball cap and khaki crowd. Thoughts?

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, Arlington. If you wear a baseball cap in the Red Room, the emo boys will steal your drinks, some guy with multiple piercings will give you a wedgie and all the ladies will give you looks that scream, "What are THOSE PEOPLE doing here?" Oh, and the bartenders won't serve you.

I have to say, though, that as much as I (Fritz) love the Red Room, it isn't exactly the best place to chill and catch up with friends. Too noisy, limited seating. Opens at 7. You might want to try something like the Rendezvous Lounge in Adams Morgan, or Chi-Cha Lounge, which is pretty quiet if you get there early on a weekend. Polly's Cafe is also an option.

Montgomery Village, Maryland: Okay gurus, you have always come through for me before. So here's a bit of a challenge. I am going to have a baby early next week (scheduled induction on Monday) and I want to do something special but not too strenous with my two year old daughter this weekend. Since after Monday, I will be a little more preoccupied. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Monty. It's Alexa. What about something sweet like a nice little lunch together? A Generous George pizza perhaps or one of these ideas. Good luck to you.

DC: Saw the sign up for Accropolis. Does this mean, they are getting closer to opening?

The Going Out Gurus: The liquor license hearing is next week, DC. I (Fritz) think that's the last big hurdle.

originally from nyc: i was wondering where all the artsy types hang in the dc-va area.....

The Going Out Gurus: This is Kate and I have a trio of suggestions: You have a pretty good chance at catching some artsy types tonight at The Saloon for "Art on the Side," a monthly salon. LadyFest at La Casa on Saturday should have the crowd you're looking for. Also on Saturday night, Moodroom's album launch at Metro should be a scene maker.

Wash DC: On the Afghan Grill: friends and I went there a few weeks ago, and the food is good -- veggie-friendly (interesting stuff like pumpkin is involved), good-sized portions, reasonable price. Reservations a must, since it's cramped in that little space.

Okay, I giveth and now I asketh: where to take the NYC buddy for a HH tomorrow night and get him to Nat'l Airport by 7:30pm?

The Going Out Gurus: Wash DC. What on earth is an HH?

Alex, Va: My Dad is coming to town next weekend. We have already done the tour of the Mall and Mt. Vernon. Can you give me other ideas of what we can see in the area?

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Alexandria. This is Maura. There's lots off the Mall to see. Have you been to the U.S. Arboretum? You have just about ten days left to catch the Newseum before it closes for three years. Worth a first or second look, no? Dad might also enjoy a Spy Tour, if you can get a reservation. On the Hill, the Library of Congress and Folger are good bets as well.

Trains: I know the Candians said they were metro restricted, but if they are coming all the way from the Great White North, it seems ashame not ton consider Baltimore's B&O Museum at http://www.borail.org/. When I was a tyke, I rememeber it seeming hugh and populated with tons of real, you can touch them locos.

The Going Out Gurus: That museum (MARC train-accessible from Metro-accessible Union Station) is a beauty, isn't it.

Dupont Circle: Your top 3 dive bars?

The Going Out Gurus: In order (for the moment):

Dietle's Tavern, Silver Spring.
Zack's, Capitol Hill.
Quarry House Tavern, Silver Spring.

But I (Fritz) could go on about dives all day. The next three would include JV's, Whitey's and Renzo's, or maybe the Raven or the Tune Inn ...

Downtown DC: Hey guys- love the chats!!!
Baby shower question- My friend is throwing one for me April 6th and I said I would like to hold it outdoors. Only problem is we can't think of a nice park located in DC that has benches, parking, metro accessability, and possibly a grill. We're not looking for anything around the Mall, as April 6th is the same day as the Cherry Bloosom Parade. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Oy, this is a toughie. The Cherry Blossom factor makes it even more difficult.
I (Jen) would say that you should explore Rock Creek Park or possibly Fort Reno. (Are there benches there? I've only been for concerts, so I can't recall what it's like sans Fugazi.) I know you can rent picnic spots along Rock Creek, though some of them may be less than Metro accessible.
If these options don't work, I say have it in a friend's backyard or the courtyard of an apartment building. My guess is that will be much easier.

Hot Buffalo Wings: I'm not a huge fan but no one I know can stand the hotness level of the hottest wings at BWB's - there's on in Silver Spring and Wheaton I think.

The Going Out Gurus: Hotness levelheaded.

Van Dorn: RE- Brunch

This past weekend I had brunch at The Commons(I think) in the Smithsonian castle. It was beautiful! The food was great. The service was excellent. The crowd was very diverse- everything from families in jeans to groups of businessmen. I highly reccommend it!

The Going Out Gurus: Thank you, VD.

Alexandria, VA: One night, while spontaneously trying to catch a movie at the theater in the Ballston Mall... I saw a shop with some improv performance group advertised? Any CLUE what I'm talking about? What can you tell me about it?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Alexandria. You're referring to "Comedy Sports," which performs at Ballson Mall on 8 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday nights and 9 p.m. Friday nights. It's a franchise of improv shows as far as I (Anne) can tell, and this is the DC version. I guess I'm partial to the homegrown and above-mentioned Washington Improv Theatre, for I haven't been to see this Virginia troupe yet.

Dining on the Mall: The best place to eat in the museums is the ice cream parlor in the Natural History. Totally fun old fashioned ice cream parlor, with pretty good food to boot. And don't forgot Jaleo or Austin Grill just off the Mall.

The Going Out Gurus: Do you know that their ice cream comes from Thomas Sweet?

Arlington, VA: GASP!!! You going out-guros are not as hip as you appear!! HH means Happy Hour, of course!

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington. I (Alexa) am the staying in Guru.

RE: Cap Hill girl with gay friend: Guru's, what are you doing? Aren't all the places you recommended very straight. Yeah, they are in Dupont and yeah some gay people go there but they are total straight bars. Why not recommend Badlands for dancing, and Cobalt for cruising, dancing and hanging out as well? I've gone to those with my gay pals and had a great time. Always remember the best thing about gay clubs for women: No line at the ladies room!

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) was just recommending some cool places generally, since she specified that her priority was quietness, not necessarily that it be a gay bar.
Consider your suggestions officially passed on. Thanks.

Surburban to Urban: Hey Va,
Studio for $800? If its nice (your closet isnt above your wet bar/hot plate) you probably wont find anything to beat that in Dupont. That said, a girlfriend just movd into the Valley Vista on Belmont into a small but cute studio for $910 soup to nuts. From what I have seen that is pretty standard in VA as well, so maybe you are sitting on cheap rent now, no matter the locale. That said-- huge jr. one bedrooms are in the low 800's at 2200 Columbia Pike--less than a mile from the metro!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip.

Old Town Alexandria: For the gal and her recenetly "out" friend...I'd recommend Cobalt and the lounge on the bottom floor called 30 Degrees. It's on 17th and R in Dupont. Check out their site at http://www.cobaltDC.com If you get there early enough, you should be able to snag a seat where you two can catch up and do some major people watching. It's a pretty mixed crowd, usually lots of pretty boys and their hags.

The Going Out Gurus: Definitely, OTA. This is Fritz, and we recently reviewed the Foodbar DC/30 Degree Lounge/Cobalt complex. Sounds like it's going to be quite the hotspot.

Seafood, Arlington, Hog: I'll marry anyone if you take my $%#-!! shuffleboard question! Is there anyplace in this area with table shuffleboard?!

The Going Out Gurus: Hog, this is Kate. Sure, I'm flattered but I can't "I do" because I don't. I think you might have more luck at finding shuffleboard poolside -- they have two "courts" at the Hilton on Connecticut. Anyone know where to find the table variety?

birthday, mclean: The coolest outdoor things around (off the beaten path) are Forest Glen, MD (a very historic, but crumbling, site that has several buildings designed after international architypes)and Glen Echo, MD (a retired amusement park that is now an artist community).
Brunch is fun to have at Season in Fairfax. It has great dining rooms, two with couches and fireplaces. Been there 4 times- Brunch is $7-10 and include a little pastry/fruit tray.

The Going Out Gurus: A triple threat!

Adams Morgan: Cool Furniture?

Skynear on 18th St. Great stuff - fair prices - nice people.

The Going Out Gurus: Very fun and very nice.

Re: Best Wings: I gotta vote for The Big Hunt & their dominant wing specials (on Tuesdays, I think). However, my friends--including the way cool GF--and I have often contemplated doing a Wing Crawl throughout the downtown area.

I agree, though, Old Glory does a pretty good job with both their BBQ and buffalo wings.

I'm surprised no bar has done a "'West Wing' Best Wing" promotion a la Felix's "Sex in the City" shindigs.

The Going Out Gurus: Love the WWBW -- maybe you should submit it to Brian at Stetson's?

Washington DC: So how does one get to become a Going Out Guru?

The Going Out Gurus: Experience, Washington. I guess 30 years. We're all in our 40s, except Fritz, who's enjoying his mid-to-late 30s.

Washington, DC: So I have a random question. A couple weeks ago a bunch of us went to Fado for their trivia night and had a great time. We went back this past week and the manager was at the door checking IDs. We're all over 21, ranging in age from 22-25, but yet he gave my boyfriend a hard time about his ID (a few years old and out of state) and wouldn't let him in. We really had a good time and would like to go again, but now feel like we can't. Should we bother trying again another time?

The Going Out Gurus: Of course, Washington. As long as the ID is legal, your bf should get in. I (Fritz) have never had a hard time with bartenders or managers at Fado. Is the ID roughed up or in bad shape? If so, it might be time to just invest in a new one.

Washington, D.C.: You guys give the best going out advice in town. No wonder you're Gurus! But I was wondering how often you all, especially Fritz and Alexa, have to go out in order to keep up with what's going on. Do you have lives outside of being Gurus?

Keep up the good work!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks DC. This is Joe and the only thing I can tell you is that Fritz goes to 5 bars a night and Alexa has at least eight meals a day (not counting the chocolate she steals from my desk). The rest of us, I'm afraid, never leave our cages though we are fed twice a day (once on weekends). Hope that explains things.

Timonium, MD : We are planning a Bachelorette Party for Sataurday night and would like to go to a male strip club....we have heard several things about 2 clubs in particular and wanted to get your opinions also....What do you know about "Wet" and also the "Hanger Club"....??

Thank you!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Timonium. Here's a feature on Wet. At the bottom of this bachelorette feature, you'll also find some info on The Hangar Club.
Hopefully this will give you an idea as to which one suits your male nudity needs. Good luck.

Elmo in Alexandria: you guys forget about me? Family party of 8 for b-day?

The Going Out Gurus: Elmo, sorry sorry. Yes I did, but didn't mean to. What about Jaleo? Always fun for a group, I think. Or somewhere like Chef Geoff's that feels a bit more "family" and is certainly reasonable.

Metro Center, DC: Has Buzz at Nation lost any of it's allure after investigative reports found rampant drug use at the club? Funny though, anybody knows that patrons that dance at afterhours clubs that don't serve alcohol get their "buzz" from other sources.

The Going Out Gurus: That Fox 5 "bust" happened years ago, Metro Center. And Buzz just keeps getting better.

U Street: re. food alternatives to Bohemian Caverns (I agree with previous poster): Kuna (nicer) or Ben's Chili Bowl; and anyone tried the Caribbean places at the corner of U, 18th, and Florida?

The Going Out Gurus: This is Kate, and I'm nuts for Kuna. Haven't tried the Caribbean place, but Alexa's got the d.l. on Ortanique's chef.

Dupont: For the girl and her recently out of the closet friend, he might like a night at 30 Degrees (above Cobalt at 17 &R), provided you get there early enough. It gets kind of loud later in the evening.

The Going Out Gurus: Really good idea! Think the second floor of FoodBar is a first rate idea.

DC: The Grand Slam at the Hyatt has table shuffleboard.

The Going Out Gurus: I guess the wedding's on, hog!

alexandria, va: Checking out Carbon Leaf at Whitlows on Saturday, but never been there. Any advice on dress code, getting there early, parking? thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: There's not much of a dress code, Alex. This is Fritz, and here's what I'd suggest: arrive early, as the place gets packed during shows - especially spots near the band. There's a free municipal parking garage near the Clarendon Metro that you can use, as street parking is a pain in that area.

Crystal City Cubicle: Hey, Gurus! I heard brief mention of a big wine event at the Ronald Reagan Building next weekend. Something like 500 different wines to taste...? I can't find anything about it, so what do you guys know? Is it all weekend? How pricey? Food available, too? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi C3. This is Maura. Yes, the Wine Expo is next weekend at the Ronald Reagan Building. There's a lot more wine than food (some celeb chefs, but mostly crackers) so I advise eating heartily before and after all that tasting, especially if you're trying to recoup the $59 entrance fee in free wine samplings. Look for more information in the entertainment guide next week. Until then check out their Web site for details.

U Street: The Islander at 12th and U has excellent Carribbean food. The curries are outstanding and they make their own gingerbeer. Pretty cheap too, and a block from Bohemian Caverns.

The Going Out Gurus: Let's hurry for curry.

Alex, Andrea & Virginia: Here's a tip for the person who was looking for good eats, poetry, then jazz: Try IOTA on the second Sunday of the month. You can eat in their nearly-new restaurant on the side, head over for poetry with host Miles Moore (6pm - 8pm) then the band starts at 9pm and IOTA 'always' has great music whatever the genre. The poetry series is on its 7th year and Steve the owner is a great guy to all. Hope this helps and maybe I'll see some of the Guru's at Bungalow's in the bungalow tonight around 9pm!

The Going Out Gurus: Love (jones) your advice, thanks AAV.

Washington,DC: HH is for happy hour. An interesting thing for this sarcastic set of gurus not to know.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes very interesting, SP. (SP=Smarty Pants)

Washington, DC: Isn't there a shuffleboard table at the Grand Slam?

The Going Out Gurus: If there is, someone is going to be very happy - and maybe even marry Kate!

Clardendon: I saw Fritz last night and he barely looked 25, let alone 35!

The Going Out Gurus: Clardendon, you know how to make an old man feel young again.

falls church: As always, heartfelt thanks for your dedication and knowledge of the local environs. In my minds eye, you guys operate like Santa’s workshop, much clattering and banging, except the elves are listening to hip-hop, drinking weird Nordic beers and speculating on how to improve the “life-saver shirt” for the next bachelorette party.

Speaking of Cafe Japone; I'm curious about some of the places that I have seen offering Jazz and "exotic" cuisines. As I recall Japone offers “jazz and sushi,” closer to Falls Church there is Bangkok Blues offering “jazz and Thai.” You guys have any opinion on these, is it good jazz AND good food, are there other similar places?

Actually Santa's elves probably do down a lot of weird nordic beers.

The Going Out Gurus: And when we laugh we shake like a bowl full of jelly! How wise you are Falls Church! Brace is really hepped up on Bangkok Blues -- Japone is very expensive and the atmosphere shoots me, Kate, a Miami Vice vibe. I say you head to Church for green curry and blues.

Thanks for stepping up with questions and answers. Please come back next week and we'll start where we left off. In the meantime, you can always get more tips in our news letter or N'sync your Palm with Vindigo's bar and restaurant listings.
