Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to

The Going Out Gurus:
Welcome back, Kotters. The usual Got Plans? crew is here and ready to help you transform your social life from drab to fab. On deck today: nightlife specialist Fritz Hahn; music man Joe Heim; dining expert Alexa Beattie; museums maven Maura McCarthy; all-around experts Kate Gibbs, Anne Kenderdine and Rhome Anderson; and me, Jen Chaney, books, theater and movies chick.
A few recommendations to get things rolling: if you haven't yet, take a look at our brand new Valentine's Day guide, which is chock full of going out ideas, not to mention the exciting datemaker. If you're in the mood for a night at the theater but are low on cash, explore the discounts that TICKETPlace is offering. And if you want to receive a list of weekly recommendations from us, subscribe to our entertainment newsletter.
Now let's get this party started.
Rockville, Md.:
Hey gurus,
Next Tuesday is my first concert at the Birchmere. I know that the tickets are general admission, but what are the details? For a group of six, how early should we arrive to sit together? Do they serve dinner during the concert or can we get there early to eat before?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Rockville, this is Joe. I assume you already have tickets because the Delbert McClinton show on the 29th is sold-out. And since it's sold out, it's best to get there early in order to sit together with your friends - especially if you want to sit anywhere near the front. I'd recommend that you get at least one or two in your group to hold a place in line by about 5:45. And yes, you can eat at the Birchmere before or during the show. Any Birchmere regulars care to weigh in on the best time to arrive?
Sports fan:
Why aren't there more sports bars in the D.C. area? You've got the Grand Slam -- crowded during big games, barren otherwise and in a hotel to boot; Fanatics -- nice setup but difficult for mixed company with Archibalds' teasers; ESPN Zone -- expensive as all get out; and the Crystal City Sports Pub. Where do y'all go to watch the games?
The Going Out Gurus: You’re missing a few. This is Fritz with a more suggestions. Few sports bars combine big screens and pick-up lines as well as Mr. Days' Sports Rock Cafe, but they always draw a lively, interesting crowd. Summers is one of the only sports bars I know that will show European soccer, Six Nations rugby, college basketball and NFL football in the same day, and they have a good number of large screen TVs. And don’t overlook MVP’s, a small, upstairs sports bar on H Street. They have pool tables, plenty of TVs and drink specials. I know people who like Willie and Reed’s in Bethesda, but the prices (and lines) can be a turnoff.
And I like to watch my college basketball at the Cornerstone in College Park or at the Park Bench Pub in Cleveland Park. Not that I’m biased towards any particular team …
Arlington, Va.:
If you were going to go to the Grandsons' show at Iota this Saturday, what time do you think you need to get there to get in?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: This is Joe again and I'd get there before 9:45 to avoid being put on the waiting list.
Lexington Park, Md.:
PLEASE HELP. I have been living in St. Mary's County, Md., for awhile now and I haven't found any good places to go dancing or for that matter any good places to do anything local. One weekend my girlfriend and I convinced a local DJ to play some good techno music but we were run off the dance floor by the locals who will line dance to everything. It is so bad around here that the only type of dance lesson that are offered in the area (as far as we can tell)is you guessed it LINE DANCING. We are sucking it up and heading to D.C. to the Habanna Village Friday. While we are game to drive the hour plus every weekend to either D.C./Baltimore/or Annapolis, we are unfamiliar with those areas and we were wondering if there is anything closer for those weekends we want to go out but not drive across half of Maryland (Solomon's Island is not our cup of tea. Plus that is where the line dancers ran us out.). We are interested in good place to go dancing that are not to hard to get into and forgiving for those of us who are not great dancers. If there is nothing closer we would like a couple of recomendations on places to go in Annapolis and D.C., thanks for any help.
Trying to make the best of it in line dancing HELL.
The Going Out Gurus: Okay, we're going to throw this out to our helpful readers -- anyone know of any non-country/line dancing places in St. Mary's County?
Washington, D.C.:
Gurus:
Is it tacky to take a first date to one of the price fixe restaurant specials this week?
The Going Out Gurus: No Washington. Though I suppose if it were me (Alexa), I might not insist on them having the set-price if the restaurant is also offering its usual menu. Some first dates might be pleased not to have to worry about choosing wisely (i.e. not the most/least expensive thing). If you see what I mean.
Bethesda, Md.:
It's a friend's birthday tomorrow. Wanted to take him out to a nice dinner, in Arlington or Bethesda. Suggestions? Someplace that wouldn't be terrible to get a table at would be appreciated.
Thanks! You guys are lifesavers.
The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, hello it's Alexa. I've just come back from a d.lish lunch at the Village Bistro on Arlington's Wilson Blvd. and while I was eating my delicious grilled salmon salad, I thought "Why don't I recommend this to Bethesda when I get back to the office?" It's a nice spot, always reliable, always good. It can be a bit tricky to get a table though, and I don't think they reserve.
Eastern Market:
Regarding the Birchmere question... It's one of my fave places for music, but you have to get there early, esp. when it's old out. I'd say to get there 2 hours before the show. The service and the food are great, so showing up early should be no prob. Once I was so early (and almost the only one there) I got to hang out with the band beforehand. Party on!
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Eastern Market. Most Birchmere shows start at 7 or 7:30 so that probably means getting there by 5 or 5:30. Whew, that's a lot of waiting around time.
Falls Church, Va.:
As always, my heartfelt appreciation for your calm and reasoned guidance in the whirlwind and calamity of the entertainment arena. Not sure where I'll be at 1, so I wanted to sneak this question in.
We are running up to Baltimore to spend some quality time with dad. The plan had been dinner and some sort of musical venue; more “lounge” than bar (i.e., we’ll need to converse, and the old guy will need to be able to hear). Jazz (more smooth than fusion), Irish or Latin had been considered as the most accessible of the musical genres.
Any thoughts?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello -- this is Fritz with a blast from the past. I just had an IM conversation with ex-Guru (and native Baltimoron) Stacy, and this is what we came up with:
The lounge at the Harbor Court Hotel (550 Light St., 410/234-0550) is a good one, with a "big game hunter" theme, good drinks, and live jazz on the weekends. There are alcoves if you need somewhere with less noise.
If it's Irish you're after, I like Mick O'Shea's Irish Pub (328 North Charles St., 410/539-7504). Good food, large bar. They have live music at night, and it can get pretty rowdy (in a good way) as the evening wears on.
And now we can open the floor to our readers for Baltimore suggestions.
Bethesda, Md.:
Hi. I have a few friends coming into town from NY tomorrow. We're looking for something to do Friday afternoon in the Upper NW/Lower Montgomery County area. Also, we're planning on spending the day down around the mall on Saturday. What exhibits would you recommend for them to see? Thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. This is Maura. If the weather holds up, you could tour the Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase or trek about Great Falls. Don't know what your visitors are into but there's also the oddly charmingDoll's House and Toy Museum and historicClara Barton House nearby. Hillwood and the Kreeger require reservations, but you could call in and check availability. As for the Mall, I'd be sure not to miss the close of Henry Moore at the National Gallery and the sand mandala being constructed by Tibetan Buddhist Monks inside the Sackler Gallery. If they haven't been, permanent exhibits like A Glorious Burden at American History might please them. Have fun.
Central Maryland:
Hi guys,
I'm newly single (BF was out of state) and I don't know many people around here. I'd like to get back in the social swing of things. I've done the D.C. Young Professionals thing, but right now, their prices are a bit too high for me (I'm currently looking for new work and can't spend very much money). Is this a hopeless situation for me? All I really want to do is hang out and hopefully meet people. I'd much prefer the Maryland area.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi CM. Don't feel hopeless. There's lots for you to do. My (Maura's) suggestion is to follow your own interests and see where they take you. Do you like art or museums or the zoo? We have a feature on young members groups and you don't have to join to particpate in activities (where fees are typically minimal). Interested in reading? Try a book club. The big chains have them as do many of the independents. Want to volunteer? Area Montgomery County charities are organizing a Thanksgiving in February on Feb. 5 at local restaurants. Why not contact one of the charities and see if you can help.
Odd comment from the gallery:
Don't you think it is weird that they have never taped a season of the "Real World" in D.C.? Do you think that the honchos at MTV think that D.C. is too lame for their show? Should I be offended?
The Going Out Gurus: For the record, yes, we think it's weird. And yes, you should be offended. I (Jen) am certainly offended.
Then again, we have "The West Wing," which is infinitely cooler.
Washington, D.C.:
Do any of the gurus know of any good places for pinball in D.C. or the burbs? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: You can't beat the Red Room at the Black Cat, where you'll find Austin Powers and Monopoly pinball machines!
Come on, pinball heads. Where are the best machines? (Bonus points for a Kiss pinball machine!)
Mt. Rainier, Md.:
Where can I go to see belly dancing? I know some restaurants have shows.
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Mount Rainier, Anne here. Have you asked at the instructor of Tuesday night's belly dancing classes at nearby Joe's Movement Emporium? Marrakesh is probably the best known, but there's many other places to see dancers in the area. MemSahib in Rockville has dancing every night except Monday at 9 p.m. Call 301/468-0098 to make a reservation.
Reston, Va.:
Hi, I plan on proposing to my girlfriend on Saturday and made reservations at JW's View Steakhouse at the Key Bridge Marriott. I requested a window table for a special occassion. Can I rely on their reservation? What do you think any suggestions?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have not been to the Key Bridge Marriott, but I would assume they'll give you the window table you requested.
To be sure, I would call again on Saturday afternoon so you can be positive they remembered. My only other suggestion is that you not propose by placing the ring in your girlfriend's wine glass or food.
Arlington, Va.:
Hey guys, do you know of any bars in the Maryland, D.C., Northern Virginia area that have a mechanical bull?
The Going Out Gurus: No, Arlington, there aren't any, but we really wish there were! We get this question via e-mail and during this discussion. The closest one we can come up with is in Fredricksburg, Va.
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.:
Good Thursday to you! Do you know of any bars in D.C. that will be showing the State of the Union on Tuesday? A group of friends and I would like to get together to watch it (being the good politicos we are!) and need a locale. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: This is Fritz, and a Hill-based friend of mine (who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty) has admitted to watching the State of the Union at the Hawk and Dove.
Washington, D.C.:
Re: Sports Bars -- Johnny K's in Brookland by Catholic University has 12 TVs with full service satellite packages for most major college and pro sports. The Barking Dog in Bethesda had a great turnout for the big Maryland-Duke tilt last week. They have a big screen TV and many smaller TVs scattered throughout. The Lucky Bar downtown also shows matches from the Premiership and UEFA.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Washington.
20036:
Help! I'm desperate for something new for a fourth date tomorrow night! Is there anything new and exciting happening downtown or in Northern Virginia? Sorry to be so non-specific, I'm looking for all ideas -- I want to wow this guy! Have you guys heard any reports back from the IMAX jazz cafe at Natural History? Good music, or really cheesy? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: 20036, for what it's worth, I (Maura) like the IMAX Jazz Cafe idea. From what I hear, the music is quite good. Check out our listing of the Jazz Cafe music lineup and see for yourself.. As for flicks, I'd be sure to catch Everest. Enjoy.
Ballston, Va.:
So I thought I'd take a change of scenery. Instead of taking my girlfriend out to popeyes this weekend, we have a reservation at 1789.
Drinks beforehand, we have an idea of where we want to go. Do you have any thoughts of a nearby establishent to grab a drink before a late reservation?
Other than that lamb rack, what'da suggest?
The Going Out Gurus: Ballston, I (Alexa) am not familiar enough with the menu there to advise you on what dish to order. You may have to go out on a limb without me. Just this once.
A drink, though, beforehand? I always like occasion to visit the bar at Neyla. So sultry.
Sports bars:
Don't forget about Champp's (yes, with two Ps) at Pentagon Row and Damon's in Springfield? Champp's in brand new and is a bit more upscale than Damon's but the wings are great. Damon's is more of a dive-type place that fills up pretty quickly.
The Going Out Gurus: You can read about Champps here.
Alexandria, Va.:
As for St. Mary's, the hottest scenes are... well... um... not so hot and Waldorf (halfway from St. Mary's to D.C.) isn't much better. Maybe try Casey Jones in La Plata or Colony South in Clinton but D.C. has it all and it's worth the drive. Check the links the gurus provide and good luck.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Alexandria.
MD:
Belly dancing. Go to Fez in Bethesda. It is a Moroccan restaurant.
The Going Out Gurus: Right-o Doctor.
In defense of linedancing:
It's great fun -- have you ever given it a try?!
The Going Out Gurus: And if you haven't, here's a list of places to go country dancing.
The Going Out Gurus:
This is Rhome, and I'm not answering a question. Just giving an unsolicited tip and hoping to spark a debate. Best Sangria? I was at Mixtec in Adams Morgan and you get a whole pitcher for 12 bucks. Lotta fruit, just enough cinnamon. And the pitcher is BIG. Share it with a friend, you will be nice.
Arlington, Va.:
My almost-3-year-old goddaughter was taken to see the Kennedy Center Cinderella and really fell in love with live theater. Are there any theaters in the area that regularly have shows that would impress young children? The Smithsonian used to have a children's theater but it seems to have diappeared.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Arlington, there are several. Classika Theatre in Arlington puts on numerous children's productions, as does Imagination Stage in Bethesda. For more, take a look at this link to children's theaters.
Enjoy!
Centreville, Va.:
Has anyone been to New Heights, in Woodley Park recently? Any good for brunches?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Anne here, and while I haven't dined at New Heights, I think the newest menu looks scrumptious. They have an a la carte brunch menu from 11-2:30 on Sundays only. No one here has tried it, though we bet it would be yum and attractive. Kate is sweet on Senses' prix fixe, spa-style morning experience, if you're looking for a luxurious, leisurely brunch, willing to spend something similar to New Heights. If you go, let us know how it is!
Shaw, Washington, D.C.:
Hello Fun Times Staff,
I've only been to HR-57 once, but had a great time. I saw the writeup about the Thad Wilson night tonight -- any idea what the cover charge is? And whether they still allow BYOB? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Fun Times. I haven't read that since I was, oh, three years old. This is Fritz, and about HR-57 ... last time I went, the cover for Thad's big band was around $6. I haven't been since they got a liquor license, but Eric Brace told me it's still BYOB-optional.
State of the Union:
There's also a group gathering to watch the State of the Union at My Brother's Place, four blocks from Union Station. Drink specials start at 5 p.m. It's being organized by the Democrats of a New Generation and the Women's Information Network, and they're calling it "Beers and Jeers," so I might steer clear if you're of a certain political persuausion.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks much.
Alexandria, Va. -- Pinball:
Best pinball around is the Star Wars box in Whitey's!
The Going Out Gurus: How could we forget? Thanks, Alexandria.
Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.:
Meeting a friend who's here for a conference on her afternoon/evening off this Sunday. Realizing that Sunday's not a big drinking day, where can we go for drinks before dinner where it's cozy and we can talk but where we're not the only people in the place? Ideas in Georgetown, Glover Park or Clevland Park work. Thank you!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Cleveland! Kate here. Here are some cozy spots where you can have a drink and some good food: in Cleveland Park, Bardeo has "small plates" and serious cocktails; in Georgetown you could try one of Old Glory's 70 bourbons before tucking into ribs, chicken or smoked lamb (and another one after, do we dare?); in Glover Park try the pizza at Faccia Luna.
Alexandria, Va.:
Why is that so many people are complaining about the cramped space at Bar Rouge, when you guys even stated that it was tight on space and show up early to grab a seat? Do people really think the company can change floor space?
The Going Out Gurus: These are probably the same people who show up at Strike Bethesda at 9:30 on a Saturday night and complain when they have to wait for more than an hour to get a lane.
This is Fritz, and Rouge is very small - their capacity is not much more than 75, and that includes seats AND standing. I told people in my review that you need to arrive early to grab a seat. But there's no telling some people, apparently. They're too good to wait, or their plans are inflexible.
Anyway, Rouge is taking steps to increase capacity - including a patio for the summer - but it's still not going to be a very big space. Just go early or go on an off night.
State of the Union:
If you can stand the interns, Cap City brewery usually shows it on a big screen... at the Hill location ofcourse. Not sure about the shirlington location.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks.
Fourth date idea:
Another nice idea (a guy just took me there for our fourth date!) is Greenwood for dinner. It is intimate and romantic, the food is out of this world, and the atmosphere and philosphy of the chef creates a good vibe for conversation. Also, the service was wonderful when I was there, a nice change from many D.C. restaurants.
The Going Out Gurus: A positive review is always nice to pass on. What happens on date five?
Re: Village Bistro:
You can make reservations. Just show up on time; five minutes and your table is gone.
The Going Out Gurus: Oh yeah?
Another sports bar:
How about Grevey's in Falls Church/Merrifield?
The Going Out Gurus: Ahhh ... Grevey's is a great place for March Madness (and other sports). Owner Kevin Grevey played for the Kentucky Wildcats and your NBA Champion Washington Bullets.
Silver Spring, Md.:
I don't have HBO at home -- is there a bar or restaurant where I can watch it? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Feel your pain, Silver Spring. I'm surprised there aren't more choices. This is Kate and I occassionally catch "Sex in the City" on Sunday night's at Felix -- but it does get noisy. Titan, the long, cavernous bar directly above Hamburger Mary's has been showing the new "Ab-Fab" on their big screen on Mondays and there has been some talk about doing the same on Sunday nights. JR's, I believe, screens Showtime's "Queer as Folk" on Sunday nights -- but if you ask nicely perhaps they'd let you catch HBO's hit(man) "The Sopranos" before hand.
Arlington, Va.:
I've had brunch at New Heights a few times and it's alright, but for the money I'd like the service to be a bit nicer. I prefer Melrose for brunch, with the piano player and the solicitous staff.
The Going Out Gurus: Another place...
College Park, Md.:
I read today's chat (1/17/02) around 4:30 p.m. and saw the question in re: screening movies tickets.
The Web site screenit.com lets you sign up to get e-mails offering free tix to previews. They pick 200 or so winners from all e-mails they get back.
The Going Out Gurus: Save us an aisle seat, CP!
Falls Church, Va.:
Can you recommend a bar type place in D.C. that would be equally good for Asian food and for hanging out on a Friday night about 10 p.m.? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: You can get sushi at the swank Dragonfly restaurant and lounge.
Sangria Issue:
Definitely Jaleo!
The Going Out Gurus: Jaleo's sangria is the sure shot, no doubt. But you can't beat the Mixtec price, or am I though only thrifty imbiber in the room? Back to Jaleo though, they have the fresh WHITE wine sangria, my friends don't understand, most of their minds can only process the existence of red. "But Rhome, it has pears in it." Of course!
Belly Dancing:
Taste of Morocco in Arlington ('round the corner from the Clarendon Ballroom) has it on Friday and Saturday nights and has much much better food than the others you mentioned (according to Tom Sietsema as well as MHO!).
The Going Out Gurus: There's more on the Washington Area Mid-East Dance Association Web site too.
Washington, D.C.:
Yea! Gurus! Love spending my Thursday lunch hour with you guys.
I've got a question for you. Actually I have two (unreleted) questions for you. First, I've been doing a little (way) early spring cleaning and I have items to donate, but am wondering where, if anywhere, in the district I can drop off clothes, shoes, household items. My Web searching has unfortunately lead me nowhere. Any ideas? And, I was wondering what time on Sunday the closing ceremony of the Tibetan Mandala will happen. Thanks gurus. You are the best!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi DC. We like spending our lunch hour with you as well. As for donating clothes, Suited for Change is a great organization that takes in donations once a month. They only take in women's professional clothing and accessories, but use them to help low-income women looking for work (they also provide career education). Kate has dropped off her donations at the dry cleaners across from the Uptown. Many area churches also have drop-offs. Any readers with more ideas?
As for the Tibetan Healing Mandala, tickets will be required for the closing ceremony, so I (Maura) would arrive early. Read the Sackler's schedule of events for more details.
Looking for brunch suggestions:
I've looked at the dining guide and somehow it doesn't answer my question. What's a good place for Sunday brunch in a local hotel? I ask for hotel suggestions because we have a rather large group and I am guessing that hotels can accomodate a large group. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes. What about Gabriel and the suckling pig?. That runs about $30 per head. And then there's Seasons in the Four Seasons. But that's a pretty pricey one.
M Street, Washington, D..C:
I'm a big Halle Berry fan and I've been hearing a lot of great things about her latest movie, "Monster's Ball." When does that come out and what's the next movie being shown at the Uptown Theater after "The Lord of the Rings"? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi M Street, this is Kate. I saw "Monster's Ball" last night. You're right to be excited about it. It's almost Gothic in its emotion and will play well on smaller screens (maybe not in front of the pole at the Janus III, ahem). Halle Berry carries the film and I'm not sure I will ever be able to look at Peter Boyle again, sorry Raymond.
I can't imagine that anything new will replace "Lord of the Rings" in the next two weeks. "Rings" has the Uptown captive this weekend and with "Birthday Girl," "Happenstance" (coming to Visions) and "Slackers" opening next weekend, I imagine it's a lock. Maybe if "Moulin Rouge" gets rereleased in anticipation of Oscar noms. Anyone care to make a wager?
NW Washington, D.C.:
Hey, I want to go see Nora Jones at the Kennedy Center MS tommorrow but I will have my 3-year-old son. Do many people bring kids to these shows? Would you or would you not recommend taking him?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello NW DC, this is Joe and by all means you should bring your 3 year-old to see Norah Jones at the Millennium Stage tomorrow. It's pretty informal and there are almost always kids when I've been there. I saw NJ a few weeks ago at Iota and thought she was great and just heard today that Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly have picked her as one of the young artists to watch in 2002. So this may be one of the last times you get to see her for free.
Vienna, Va.:
Do you know of any good bars for a person in their 20s in Reston, Vienna, or Mclea (other than Champps)? It seems like all the bars in the area are part of restaruant chains, and I would like something with a little more personality without having to go to D.C. or Arlington every time.
The Going Out Gurus: Hmmmmmmm ... this is Fritz, and I was talking about this with some Vienna/Reston natives. Vienna? Nothing we could come up with for young people, although the Vienna Inn has cold beer.
McLean? There's eCiti, which is a bit techie-heavy.
I don't mind a few bars in Reston, including Clyde's, but you might want to consider going to Herndon, where you'll find the second branch of Ballston's popular Carpool, which has great beer, pool tables, darts and a cool design. And Old Town Herndon has Jimmy's Old Town Tavern, where you'll find foosball and a quiz night.
Petworth, Washington, D.C.:
For Rhome --
Personally, I think the best sangria is at Churreria Madrid. Light, but flavorful.
The Going Out Gurus: Price? Y'all don't hear me, I'm on a BUDGET.
If it's yummy, I won't care too much though, duly noted.
Washington, D.C.:
Dear Gurus,
Very recently broke up with my longtime S.O., and now am wondering if there are any fun activities that I can partake in for Valentine's Day that aren't just for couples. The activities listed on the WP/EG Web site seem to be for dates. Thanks for the help!
The Going Out Gurus: Dear DC, you know, despite all the decorations in CVS, Valentine's Day is really just another day on the calendar when there's dozens of things to do in this city. I (Anne) think that most of the events going on are ideal of couples or groups. Here's everything going on on Feb. 14. Is there a movie, exhibit, or play you've been meaning to see? Why not make a date with some friends? Start up the cheer with a happy hour. Laugh about your past with the '80s dance night at Heaven, or enjoy a comedy about friendship with tickets to "I'm Not Rappaport."
Washington, D.C.:
Are there any other bars besides the Pourhouse where Steelers fans can watch the game (en masse) on Sunday? I love the Pourhouse but afraid it's going to be packed.
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Just GO EARLY, Washington -- they're opening the doors at 10 a.m. for Steeler fans who want some Iron City (and a table) before kickoff.
About two or three years ago, there were a number of Steeler fans meeting at Brittany's in Woodbridge, Va.
Anyone else know where to watch the Steelers?
Re: sports bars:
Don't forget the ROCK! right across the street from the MCI center. Esp. during football season they've got everything on; and they divide their 3 floors up by games.
They've also got some killer wings.
The Going Out Gurus: True. They host lots of college alumni parties and show World Cup soccer on the rooftop deck. Can't beat that.
For Falls Church, Va., looking in Baltimore:
Try the 13th Floor at the Belvedere Hotel (On Chase Street) Downtown. Great view of the city and usually have Jazz or some type of live music.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks.
Washington, D.C.:
Good afternoon gurus!
I don't know if this is the appropriate forum for this question, but I'll throw it out there anyway:
Flowers for boyfriend on Valentine's Day: cool or bad idea?
The Going Out Gurus: As long as he's not allergic to flowers, I (Jen) think it's a cool idea.
Annandale, Va.:
Hello,
Great stuff! I wish I had more time to go through all the links that you provide.
I'm new and looking for a nice place to dance salsa or merengue. I'm tired of these over crowded, many times obscene atmosphere places. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Have you been to Cecilia's?
Washington, D.C.:
Here is a completely random question for you -- where can I buy playing cards? Not the icky blue and red ones at CVS, but something kinda interesting.
The Going Out Gurus: I wish Janet was here... Any takers? What about a novelty shop like Spencer's, or a political memorabilia spot? Rhome's reaching... but how are you gonna play CVS out like that though? Buy generic, that's my motto.
Sangria!:
Surprisingly, the sangria at Cactus Cantina is reasonably priced and pretty darned good. Not quite Jaleo, but cheaper if I remember right...
The Going Out Gurus: And I got the margarita when I went here, stay tuned for another similar one...
playing cards:
Check the museum stores - or I just saw some atthe Kennedy Center gift shop. Sporting goods stores might have quality ones.
The Going Out Gurus: So helpful!
Downtown, Washington, D.C.:
My boyfriend and I are interested in checking out that new lounge in Georgetown, the one next to Rhino. Do you know anything about it? Is it a good place for a group of people to go?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Downtown. I (Fritz) haven't been to Modern in months, but recent reports suggest it's similar to when it opened: lines on the weekends, picky bouncers (though they've eased on the dress code), good dance music (a mix of retro, pop, techno and hip-hop, depending on the DJ), and expensive drinks. I intend to go back there soon for an update.
Re: Birchmere:
Thanks for all the tips, I'm going on Saturday. Can anyone describe the kind of food they serve?
The Going Out Gurus: This is Joe and the Birchmere serves lots of basic stuff (burgers, chicken wings, salads) and does it all pretty well. They also have decent pizza and a few Louisiana things like muffaletta type, po-boys and catfish. I almost always go for the pulled bbq pork sandwich.
Ballston, Va.:
Has anyone been to The Tombs in Georgetown recently? How is it?
The Going Out Gurus: It's still the Tombs -- dark, noisy, filled with Georgetown students and Crew memorabilia.
Cost-effective sangria:
Sagebrush Grill in Arlington. Not too sweet, and priced compatibly with Mixtec. Cinnamon? Never thought of that.
I am also renowned for my cheap sangria recipe (not authentic, but tasty):
Dice up half an orange, a lime, a lemon and an apple. Put in pitcher. Pour a jug of Carlo Rossi Cafe Paesan over all. Top off with Welch's Raspberry Grape (you want about a 4:1 wine to juice ratio). Chill for at least two hours to get the fruit at the bottom going. Serve over ice.
The Going Out Gurus: I (Alexa) am here to tell you the very sad news that the old Sagebrush is no more. So, if you just tell us where you live, we'll be round for a cup of yours later.
del ray again:
speaking of sangria. last time we went to Toro Tapas, we tried to order a carafe. the waiter said that there was a new VA law that prohibits selling carafes or pitchers of the stuff. Is this true or was he trying get us to order by the glass??
The Going Out Gurus: Egads!! Fritz of the Black Liver clan has never heard of such an abomination. I shudder at the thought. *shudder*
Fijiman:
I have my in-laws coming to town to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their children. I have the lucky job of finding something to do besides having a fancy dinner at my house. Any ideas besides monument touring? Any good garden sites open? Old Towne shopping and dinner? I'm totally befuddled!
The Going Out Gurus: Relax Fijiman, Kate here. The Mall is easy: Metro-accessible and the museums are free. What about a walk 'round the recently refurbished Botanic Gardens and a peek inside another crowd pleaser like the National Gallery of Art's permanent collection. A longer, gentle walk can be had at the U.S. Arboretum too -- though not Metro-accessible.
How big is your group? Dinner in Old Town might be nice. I know Alexa prefers Geranio's and Taverna Cretekou, the latter is especially good with a larger group. For a nostalgic taste, see if you can arrange something at the new, but old fashioned Majestic Cafe. Keep us posted and ask again if you need a few more ideas.
del ray, va:
re : Brunch. Banana Cafe puts on a good latin-like brunch. $16 for no alcohol, $20 for all you can drink mimosas, if I remember correctly. And they can seat a bunch of people.
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Del Ray, yes.
re that VD thing I just posted...:
It's on Feb 13. Doh. Forgot to mention.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks -- and have you checked out "MacHomer?" Sounds like just your thing.
re: reston bars:
Cinncinati grill at hunters woods-they have a menu book of just the cocktails
McCormick and Schmicks
Rio Grande
Glory Days-huge tv screen
Ice House Cafe
Clydes is fun but packed and expensive
Vienna Inn-good call, only dogs after 9pm
Bennigans at 123 & rte 7 in worldcom building
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks much -- lots of chain restaurants in your list, but Glory Days and Cinncinati Grill are good ideas.
Fairfax, Va.:
I know you guys generally cover the night scene but I thought I'd ask anyway. My child is studying Greek mythology in school the year (she's in fifth grade) and I was wondering if you know if any of the museums downtown have a Greek mythology exhibit or if there is anything I could take her to so she could learn more about it. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Fairfax. We gurus cover the scene day AND night and I (Maura) think the museum is a great idea. You'll find a few examples in the Corcoran's current Clark Collection show, but your best bet might be to explore the permanent collections of the National Gallery, the Walters or the Baltimore Museum of Art. The National Gallery's Titians are one place to start. A number are based on mythological themes including the stunning "Feast of the Gods." One of the docents would be happy to help you plan a tour or search their database before you go. Enjoy.
Clothing Dropoff:
Salvation Army on River Rd in Chevy Chase; occasionally at the 7-11 on Wisc Ave in Tenleytown
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, a very good tip!
Cap Hill Grrl:
Sangria (other than Mixtec which I loooooove almost as much as my budget does) is great at El Tamarindo on Florida Ave...
The Going Out Gurus: Gimme!
Delaware to D.C.:
Is there any place that has a "West Wing" night (a la "Sex in the City" night)?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes. Joe's house I believe.
20009:
Rhome, tsk tsk tsk. You've been missing out if you've been ordering the -sangria- at Mixtec. Any fool knows to get their margaritas - talk about powerful... But to answer your question, the best sangria's at Cafe Citron. Plus during their happy hour, it's around $3.50/glass - not to be beat...
The Going Out Gurus: Citron and Jaleo seem to get the most repeat votes. I will get to the bottom of this if it's the last thing I drink.
Washington, DC:
Regarding the question about donating clothes and household items: I have dropped off clothes, etc. at Goodwill Industries in Arlington (Glebe Rd. and Hwy 50). Very easy and they'll give you a receipt for tax purposes.
The Going Out Gurus: More that's good to know.
Arlington, Va.:
Greetings all wise ones!
Will be doing the rare (for me) Old Town thing this Saturday, and I'm wondering if there's anything down there that one could call a "lounge," a la ChiCha or Aroma or ESL?
The Going Out Gurus: Nope. Closest thing you'll find is the funky Majestic Lounge in Del Ray, although I (Fritz) have heard rumblings about a new lounge opening this year. We shall see.
Gabriele:
is closed for renovations
The Going Out Gurus: No, it isn't.
Arlington VA:
The last time I was at the Uptown (early Jan.) they had signs up that said Blackhawk Down would be the next movie there. But that may have changed, in light of the extended LOTR run.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington, you must have seen flotsam from the "Black Hawk Down" premiere. It was a week ago Monday.
RE: Playing Cards:
You can get nice Bicycle Poker cards as well as other brands at Al's majic shop on 17th and K.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks. Your deal.
Annapolis MD:
For last week's persoon who is moving to Annapolis and looking for DC type places, while there isn't a lot, there are some cool spots to hang out. But, I gaurantee, give Annapolis a while and you will get into the regular scene, which isn't nearly as brewpubby as you think, and isn't nearly as lame as it sometimes comes off. The local musicians are fantastic and the scene is just very, very relaxed, but very very fun too. And DC and B-more are always close enough to get a quick lunch fix when you need it. That said, Tsunami on West street just expanded their fantastic restaurant and it is a very cool place to hang at the bar or grab a bite. It is just a bar/restaurant, but more trendy than typical Annapolis. (and with a hint of 'Dupont' on Wednesdays). Yin Yankee is smiliar, but I prefer Tsunami. 49 West is a cool loungey coffee bar, with live music, some eats, and a liquor license. They have a nice patio out back in the summer.
The funny thing about Annapolis is that it really depends on the crowd of the particular night as to what the scene is. Middleton's upstairs piano bar can be totally hip and cool, mostly 20/early 30 somethings, or it can be 50/60 somethings, grooving to Anne Murray songs, depending on the night and the mood and whome you are with. Riordan's, Griffin's and O'Briens tend to be the dance music, meat market, college kid, drunken scene more than other places, with teh exception of Acme, which is the biggest meat market of them all on the weekends, but has great blues and other live music during the week. Chart House has live music on Fridays, a great way to wind down after work, in the big comfy charis by the fireplace, though the kids that some happy houring parents bring along can be a it disconcerting at times.
Remember, though, that Annapolis is also going through some changes right now, as always, so the scene may be totally different in 3 months. Just keep an open mind and try out new locations whenever you get a chance, it is the best way to find your niche.
Have fun - it's a great place to live!
The Going Out Gurus: A very helpful Annapolitan. Much appreciated.
cecilias:
kudos for metioning this fine arlington establishment. Its an experience.
The Pike represents!
The Going Out Gurus: It is indeed an experience. The bands are excellent.
Sunday Nights:
So fans of Sex in the City can go to Felix on Sunday nights to watch the show. What about those of us who are addicted to Alias? Should we just buy a sixpack of beer and stay home?
The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like a plan!
DC - Pinball:
Hey, you can play the Adams Family pinball at the Townhouse Tavern in Dupont.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, DC.
del ray (yet again) re: cards:
there's a shop south of Dupont Circle, on conn ave near P nw, right near the starbucks and luna grille. I don't remember than name, but it's a small indie shop, and they have some cool ones sometimes. Also maybe try the unique paper store further north, same side of the street, across from Lawson's.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Del Ray. This is Kate. You must be thinking of "The Written Word" just south of Dupont. An enviable selection, indeed.
Cap Hill Grrl:
If you are a Dem, watch the State of the Union at the Tune Inn...that's where all the old school D's used to hang out and where we still go to gawk and squawk at the R's.
The Going Out Gurus: And Carville and Matalin didn't even finish their cheeseburger on date one, right?
Arlington, Va.:
Hi Guys!
I don't know whether you've addressed this question (but I couldn't find it in the archives). My boyfriend and I are interested in getting involved in some co-ed sports -- specifically softball and ultimate frisbee. Of course, we are open to other ideas/sports. Do you all know of any leagues or organizations we can contact? I know most of them probably aren't PLAYING now when it's cold. But I'd bet they are organizing for the spring soon.
Thanks in advance.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington, Anne here. The central place for D.C. frisbee info is the Washington Area Frisbee Club, and their site is full of good info, like the fact that spring league registration is due on Feb. 14. The club has lots of teams, something for everybody. On softball, there's a Montgomery County fast-pitch softball group you might want to contact at 301/977-8135. They seem open to new players. Anyone else in the game want to add some ideas?
Alexandria, VA:
Hi, gurus, need your help! I'm planning to get a group of people together for my 30th birthday at Dave & Busters. Problem is we'd like to eat dinner beforehand, and D&B will not take reservations. The group will be 20-30 people, and I am completely unfamiliar with restaurants in the White Flint Mall area. Please help!
The Going Out Gurus: Well, there are two other restaurants in White Flint Mall you can try: The Cheesecake Factory (where they probably don't take reservations either) and P.F. Changs.
A bit farther up the Pike is Copeland's, or not far away on Old Georgetown Road, you'll find Hamburger Hamlet. Don't know what the reservation situation is at either of these spots. If you travel south of White Flint on 355, you'll hit downtown Bethesda, where restaurant options are wide open.
Hope that helps a little.
Al's Magic Shop:
Is on Vermont Ave. just off 15th & K, not 17th and K
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks.
Washington, D.C.:
Gurus:
Recently there was a huge party for young Jewish People of Color in San Francisco. As an African American Jewish woman I was wondering if you all knew of anything similar happening anywhere on the East Coast. Thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, this is Kate. Honestly, I don't know the answer to this, but I bet the DCJCC might. Give them a ring: 202/518-9400. On a side note, the documentary, "Trembling Before G*d" opens tomorrow at Visions and the director will be present at several screenings this weekend. Sounds interesting.
Sangria:
The sangria at Cafe Citron is really good -- strong but fruity. I was not a big fan of the sangria at Guapo's though the margaritas were excellent.
The Going Out Gurus: Good to know.
Washington, D.C.:
Hey gurus!
If you wanted to go out for drinks with a group of friends somewhere downtown (Metro Center area) on a Friday night where would you go?
The Going Out Gurus: Depends on the friends. Around 12th and G, there's the Cap City Brewing Company for beer and pretzels, Shelly's Back Room for drinks and cigars, Cafe Mozart for Bitburger Black and German beers ... but I (Fritz) might go up a few stops to Dupont Circle for Fox and Hounds, the Brickskeller, etc.
Bethesda, Md.:
For the person looking for good music in Baltimore, this isn't really a lounge but Howl at the Moon is a piano bar and there's always a good crowd and it's a lot of fun.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Bethesda.
Washington, D.C.:
Re: Drinks before 1789
The bar there is VERY nice and cozy. It would be nice to sit downstairs for a while before going to your table. Especially if you get seated upstairs, since the rooms have less historic ambiance.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks DC.
Alex, VA:
Since it is going to finally be such a nice weekend I know of a great dog park to take your dogs to.
It is South Run dog park off of Fairfax County Parkway.
Speaking of dogs, before you spoke about the restaurant you can take dogs to--where is that?
The Going Out Gurus: Good tip, Alexandria. Yes, it is. Yes it is a goooooood tip.
Arlington, Va:
HELP! A guy is coming to visit me this weekend (short notice) that I met in October at a festival in Florida. We only hung out for an hour but have kept in touch via phone/email (he lives 8 hours south of me). His personality is great, very low-key, funny, etc. However, since I barely know him, I have no idea where to take him. But I'd like it to be a place where we can really get to know each other. I was thinking Brickseller since it's quiet and he is definitely a beer man. Any other suggestions? Stetson's? I may get another couple to go with me in case things go bad...and their vote was Stetson's. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. This is Fritz. Here's the deal: if you just want to talk over beer, go to the Brick. But the problem is that there's nothing there but the beers. If you go to Stetson's and everything doesn't run smoothly, there's pool, video games, TVs, loads of people hanging out at the bar. In other words, you'll have more options. The choice is up to you.
WDC:
How much longer is the mandala around?
The Going Out Gurus: The Tibetan Healing Mandala will finish on Sunday. During the closing ceremony, they will sweep their completed work away, literally. It looks like you'll need a ticket for Sunday, but before then, you can walk right in. I hope you can make it, but if you can't get there this weekend, I (Maura) suggest you check out our video of these Buddhist monks at work.
Cleveland Park:
Along the lines of drinks, is there anywhere around here to get a good Baltimore zoo?
The Going Out Gurus: I have no doubts that Lili from Aroma (Friday nights) could make a Baltimore Zoo. To be honest, my first choice would be Krishna, but he's off for a few weeks.
Downtown Washington, D.C.:
Hey gurus, quick question for you. I want to take my boyfriend out for a birthday dinner in a couple weeks with great food and wine, but a casual atmosphere and a reasonable price tag in the District. I was thinking of Bardeo or Ardeo in Clevland Park, but really need some other suggestions. If you do like the B/Ardeo suggestion, since I've not been to either; which do you prefer? Thanks in advance.
The Going Out Gurus: This is Anne, and I'd have to go with Ardeo, just because it looks less cramped and would be more conducive to comfort. The two are right next door to each other and share a kitchen, but have separate street entrances. Bardeo seems more focused on wine and has "small plates" of food. It's more an elegant bar, as its name suggests. "Reasonable" is relative, I guess. Ardeo should work for a date. You might also consider Chef Geoff's.
wash dc for annandale:
For amazing salsa and a less crowded space then most others I recommend zanzibar on wednesdays. By far best salsa in town...
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks much.
RE: Donated Clothes:
Martha's Table, on 14th St, NW, just north of U Street i beleive. They take all kinds of other things too.
I recall having some pretty good sangria at Andale, too, Rhome...
The Going Out Gurus: More good tips.
K Street, Washington, D.C.:
Meeting for Happy Hour at 6 in Foggy Bottom -- where to go?
The Going Out Gurus: If you want to avoid the students, head for Marshall's or the Garden Terrace bar at the Four Seasons Hotel.
Bethesda, Md.:
Is anything happening with the space where Parioli's used to be? And why is every place in Bethesda starting to charge cover -- didn't they learn from Parioli's mistake?
The Going Out Gurus: We haven't heard anything about Parioli, Bethesda. What places in Bethesda are charging cover? We can only think of Chrome and Lewie's. As long as Black's is free, everything will be okay.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Gurus!
I quit smoking on Monday and am at a loss about what to do this weekend (and beyond) that is smoke-free, drink-free, fat-free, and Metro-accessible.
Tell me I'm not destined to spend the next month at home, renting movies!
The Going Out Gurus: Congratulations, Dupont. This is Anne, and our collective Entertainment Guide thoughts are with you. Don't worry, you can still go out and keep your promises to yourself. Clarendon Ballroom and Lost Dog Cafe are smoke-free venues. Clarendon is very close to the Metro, and at Lost Dog, well, if you follow the house rules you'll be drink-free after three orders.
Co-ed sports:
Definitely check out the Kick Ball League. I know they have a website and the organizing group is called the Washington Adult Kickball League. Wasn't there a Post article about it?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, there was a Post Weekend article about it last year, though we can't seem to find a link to it at the moment.
Here is a link to the kickball association Web site, however.
Laurel, MD:
When does Krishna return to Aroma?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) was there on his last night (the 14th) and he said he hoped to be back sometime in February.
dupont:
what about happy hour on the south side of dupont?
The Going Out Gurus: Cafe Citron for $3.50 mojitos. The specials at Lucky Bar are usually pretty good as well.
The Going Out Gurus:
Whew! You guys had a lot of questions. We did our best to answer them all, but couldn't get to everything. Don't fret, though, because we will return next week.
