Special to washingtonpost.com

Monday, March 11, 2002; 6 p.m. EST

What's your sign? Do you want to know what the planets and heavenly bodies have aligned this year -- in your career, in romance or surprises in your daily life? Each week, "Madame" Lichtenstein, takes your questions on sun signs, lunar influences and all things in the stars.

Lichtenstein's skills run in the family. Her great aunt, Etta Weimar, was the famous Romanian card reader to both kings and queens. A native of New York City, Lichtenstein was educated in Europe where she pursued the study of tarot and astrology. She returned to New York in 1974 and has lived in Greenwich Village ever since, dispensing advice whether requested or not.

Lichtenstein's monthly and weekly astrology columns are carried in newspapers across the country. When not writing or working on her Web site, AccessNewAge.com/zscope, Lichtenstein offers private consultation. She is a member of the National Council of Geocosmic Research and often lectures on both astrology and tarot.

Wondering how Mercury in retrograde affects your day-to-day life? What eclipses means for you and your loved ones? How to get in touch with your rising sign?

Below is a transcript.

Starbite of the week:
Tonight is the 6 month anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. I am reprinting my starbite for Sept 24, 2001 – the first show I did after September 11:

"There is no sense to be made from the events September 11. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted by these terrorist attacks. Here in lower Manhattan, we persevere but the landscape has changed forever.
I expect a barrage of questions on these events. Here are some random thoughts in no particular order:
1. The inevitable question for tonight – what was going on astrologically and why hasn’t anyone predicted this? Answer:
Astrology is not fate; there is free will and choice. Yet, there can be planetary alignments that indicate tougher times. In a January 2001 Starry Eye program I said - The planetary event that most affects the year 2001 is the Jupiter / Pluto opposition which occurs three times this year … expect expansive and volcanic changes. It will certainly not be a boring year!
What I did not mention at the time was that Saturn would form an opposition to Pluto seven months later, effectively replacing Jupiter in the aspect. Jupiter is the planet of expansion. Saturn is the planet of problems. Pluto is the planet of volcanic change.
2. Saturn is in Gemini during this opposition, the sign of the twins… Twin Towers.
3. The WTC towers were 28 years old – Saturn Return.
4. Read Michael Wolfstar O’Reilly’s NewScope on www.AccessNewAge.com for event-based astrological analyses that can put this and other news events in astrological context.
5. For those in a Nostradamus frame of mind, check out John Hogue and www.dreamscape.com/morgana sites.
6. Events and “things” (like buildings) have horoscope charts. I happen to have Osama bin Laden’s birth date and birth place (unfortunately not his time of birth). Nonetheless, if someone is interested in more details, you only have to ask…
7. Same thing for the birth of the World Trade Towers (actually the date of the ribbon cutting ceremony on 4/4/73). Interesting planetary positions…."

Let’s now get to your great questions - and there are many of them tonight!

Please remember to include your birthdate, time and place of all astrological requests.

Milwaukee, Wisc.: Today is my birthday. Any advice for the year ahead?

I was born on March 11, 1953 at 8:44 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Happy Birthday!
Okay, you have sun in pisces, moon in capricron, mercury, venus and mars in aries and possibly libra rising.

While you have a mushy and romantic pisces sun (your general personality), there is a great deal of strength in you - in how you communicate (mercury), how you express love (venus) and how you fight (mars). You are no pushover!

The planet to keep in mind this year is pluto which is in sagittarius. It is the planet of volcanic power and transformation. While it is squaring your sun and may give you some extra challenges, all your aries planets guarantee that you ahve the power and ability to make leomade out of lemons. You may face some interesting changes that will prove to be excellent for you in the long term.

In March, expect some great career opportunities thanks to direct Jupiter in your career sector. Relationships heat up since venus is in your 7th house. Mars makes you steamier and more sensual throughout the month.

Hope that helps!

Maryland: Hi - great column and Web site! I have been experiencing lots of ups and downs in my marriage, especially in the last 12 months. I really love my husband and we have 2 children, one born 10 months ago, but personally feel like I need some big changes in this and other aspects of my life. We are trying to work marriage out. Any advice on what's going on with me/us? Thanks!

I am pisces, born 3/7/70 at 1:00 p.m.
Husband is capricorn, born 12/25/70 at 1:40 p.m.

Charlene Lichtenstein: I am sorry to hear that.

Well, you have a great deal of pisces in your chart - sun, moon, mercury and venus. Mars is in robust aries so while you are generally a pushover (ahem...) they can only push you so far before that feisty aries muscles in and makes them know your limits.

Your husband has sun in cap, moon (emotions) in scorpio and venus (love) in scorpio. A good match between his scoprio love planets and your piscean love planets. There is a strong emotional connection.

You, however, have a difficult aspect to all your psices planets by volcanic pluto in sagittarius which is squaring pisces and will be for a while. Youmay be chomping at the bit - wanting or experiencing transformative change and seeking an anchor or a sense of stability. I think that as long as both of your understand the power of pluto, you can both be more understanding of each others needs.

ANother thought - you say this has been going on a while. Did it start during your Saturn Returns (ages 27-30)? You ahve to deal with issues during your return or they just don't go away. Read more about the return period at www.AccessNewAge.com and if this makes sense, let's check the positions of your Saturns to see what issues still need to be addressed.

Washington, DC: Hello Madame Lichtenstein! I was born on March 18, 1975 in Vineland, NJ. Concerning relationships, it is very difficult in recent months for me to develop a coherent course of action. I struggle between following my instincts (which tend towards the "concessionary" in relationships) and tempering those instincts with the advice of others, which are comparatively self-protective and "competitive." Recently I've really been trying to give more credence to the advice of others - but I do not like it - I do not want to believe how they see the world. I was just hoping that you could shed some light on my personality in this regard. Might I have a strong tendency for "Pollyanna" delusion? If so, is that bad? I really would appreciate any insight, as well as maybe some hints on the types of people I would be best to become involved with romantically. Thank you so much!

Charlene Lichtenstein: I would love to have your time of birth so I can see what is going on in your 7th house of relationships but even with what you have sent me, I can give you a bit of information:

You have sun and mercury in pisces, moon in taurus, venus in aries and mars in aquarius.

Pisces are invcurable romantics and may fall for people who are not the best for them. Some times there is a codependent relationship involved. Moon in taurus makes you loyal and emotionally stable. You will stay with situations well beyond their happy life cycle because you are so steadfast. Does this make you a Pollyanna? I don't think so but it will make you stick with tough situations.

Venus in aries is fairly direct so you are not afraid to express your love. This is good!

Women tend to live out their moon sign before the age of 30. After the age of 30 (and after their saturn return ages 27-30) they become more like their sun sign. So I think you will always be a bit more flexible to the foibles of others but you will also learn how to harness the power of your venus in aries which I beleive will always save you from being a doormat. You are right to go with your instincts. Read more about the Saturn Return at www.AccessNewAge.com/zscope and prepare yourself to learn a great deal more about yourself in the next 3 years.
Keep in touch and let me know what is happening!

Bethesda, Md.: For the past few weeks people have been acting a little NUTS -- and I have a feeling that the way the planets have been lining up is doing this. Are the planets going nuts which is causing folks to act different? And what planets are affecting everyone right now which is causing them to act this way? Especially MEN!

Charlene Lichtenstein: Maybe it is a transit to your chart that is causing this assessment. What is your birthdata?

Moons sometimes cause funkiness out there -
I don't see eclipses now but there was a full moon at the end of February. It should be passing now.

Columbia, Md.: Ms. Lichtenstein:

Thank you for your program. I have more or less found myself at a comfortable place in my work, home and family, yet I have a nagging feeling that there is more for me to do and my experiences thus far have been preparatory. I am in a good happy relationship (finally)and my children are in college and doing well (fingers crossed). I was born 12/18/57 at 6:40 a.m. in Bitburg, Germany. Do you have any thoughts as to where I should be putting my energy in the near and middle term future?

Thanks you!

Charlene Lichtenstein: Welcome!
Well you have sun in sagittarius, moon in scorpio, mercury in capricorn, venus in aquarius, mars in scorpio and possibly sag rising. Aha! No wonder!

You are a very open and honest person who is very expansive in love. You are a careful and conservative comminicator and very strategic when you take action.

Pluto, which is transiting your first house and hitting your sun is asking you if that is all there is? Changes, eruptions and transformations are there for the taking. Sometimes they will come without you realizing it. The first house is new beginnings so Pluto is placing energy on new things, new directions and new people.

Where to out your efforts? I suggest into learning more about what makes you tick - psychological breakthroughs. Jupiter, the planet of luck and expansion is transiting your 8th house of psychology and deep personal mergings. This can also be sexual in nature. Saturn is in your 7th house of relationships so I suspect there will be a few things to learn there too over the next couple of years - building on a great foundation!

Hope that helps!

Rockville, Md. Love your show -- I have a much better understanding of astrology because of it. My birthday was yesterday, 3/10/55, Fort Worth, Tex., 1:59 p.m. (moon in Libra, Mercury & Venus in Aquarius, and Mars in Taurus, cancer rising). Any thoughts on how the coming year will go?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Thank you. I am so glad! The purpose of this show is to demystify astrology and bring greater understanding of it and of the self.

Thanks for your planets. So you must know that lucky Jupiter is currently transiting your first house of new beginnings. I think this should be a very lucky year and a good time to start new things and meet new people. But don't be too trusting - be a bit discerning. Saturn, the planet of lessons, is in your 12th house of secrets and things that go bump in the night. There may be folks you may try to undermine you. Not to worry though - lucky Jupiter is a great protector and you will be more than able to thwart any underhanded attempts.

The sun enters aries on March 21st and give your career a boost. Yet, as Mars sits in your 11th house of friends, you may be more tempted towards social events this month. Everyone will want to spend time with you! Listen to their advice and lend a hand to them. The payoff will be big.

Does this help?

Washington, D.C.: Hi,

My name is Pedro, and I am a certified astrologer. As you know, a lot of times you can be your own worst enemy trying to do your own chart. So I hope you can help me. I was born on January 2 at 5:35 a.m. My Jupiter is at 24 degrees Scorpio, Mercury 19 degrees Sagittarius, Moon is 11 degrees eight minutes libra, Venus 23 degrees Capicorn, Mars 17 degrees Taurus, and Saturn is at 29 40 of Saggitarius. My ex is a pisces (28 degrees), and the passion (and sex)was great, but she had problems with what I do, and my financial hardships (Saturn in the first house). I currently am interested in three ladies, and two are born within a week of each other (July 15 and July 21, 1977). I have had great relationships with Cancerians in the past, but I always seemed to be more interested in them than they in me. Infact, the last cancer I was involved with nearly broke my heart. Am I setting myself up again, or do you think either of the above would make a good match?

Charlene Lichtenstein: It is so difficult to read your own chart - I absolutely understand!

I would really love to have their birthtimes if that is possible. As it stands now, both of them have venus in virgo which is very compatible with your cap sun and venus.

The "15th" has mars in libra which is ruled by venus just like your mars in taurus but is less compatible with your venus and sun. SHe also has mercury retrograde - do you ever have low-level miscommunications? Yet, she has a good connection to your mercury and your moon. You think alike.

The "21st" has mars in scorpio - arguably a better fit with you.

My guess with not all the information is that the sex is better with the 21st but you may feel more mentally connected with the 15th. Send me more information and we can get into greater detail.

New York, N.Y.: Hi Madam Charlene!

I hope you get to this query this time (have been trying for a few weeks, and submiited yesterday evening as well) but now that you are online, let me try again. I am male born July 23rd,1969 at 2:10 p.m. local time at Delhi INDIA. Last few years have been extremely painful for my marriage and currently seperated. I feel I didn't deserve this and being a senstive person its very painful to live like this. Please help me understand what's causing this and will I find a soul mate?
Regards

Charlene Lichtenstein: Thank you for your patience.
You have sun in cancer, moon in scorpio, mercury in aries, venus in gemini and mars in sagittarius. Possibly scorpio rising. I wish I knew your wife's information too for comparison purposes.

There is a part of you that is very senstive and romantic. You feel deeply and can be hurt deeply too. Yet, with venus in gemini you come off in love as being flirtatious and carefree. Think of how you can balance that friendly gemini energy in your love expression (venus) with that intense scorpio emotionally (moon) and sensitive cancer (general personality). You may give mixed signals in love.

March should be an excellent time to deal with relationship issues - whether fixing what you have or seeking anew. Mars is currently in your 7th house of marriage providing energy and direction. Jupiter provides luck through travel and through global endeavors (also legal issues...) because it is in your 9th house. If you want to revive your marriage, perhaps consider a vacation together? If you are looking for new relationships, a trip may provide you with a refreshing new perspective. You have a few months with Jupiter so plan it carefully!

Try this and let me know how it goes.

Cornville, Ariz.: What is your take on a Saturn/Sun conjunction in the 4th house? And, how do you interpert split houses and cusps?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Good question.
I say that the person with this conjunction is very particular about where they live and may be extra concerned with security. Saturn in the 4th may be fearful of losing their home and security. The conjunction may make this person extra serious in general and very wise - beyond their years.

Split houses? That refers to a sign within a house that is not on the cusp? (Intercepted houses) That indicates to me that there is more to the behavior of the person than one would expect.

Cusps - everyone's got 'em in their charts. They are the thresholds of the house and give a great deal of flavor as to how someone behaves in a certain area of their life.

Does that anser your questions?

Reno, Nev.: Me: Sun in Aquarius
Moon in Leo
Ascendent in Sagittarius
Mercury and Mars in Aquarius
Venus in Capricorn

He: Sun in Pisces
Moon in Aries
Mercury and Mars in Aquarius
Venus in Aries

What do you think?

Charlene Lichtenstein: The connections I see here are his sun (personality) iwth your venus (love style). Your sun with his venus. Both of your moons are compatible. SO there is a great connection emotionally and your personalities with the way you both express your love.

He seems a bit more sensitive and romantic than you so remember to feel his piscean need for romance every so often. His venus in aries says "I am the pursuer" so keep that in mind...

Do you think he will be very successful? That will make your conservative Venus in cap a bit happier!

Looks good. Viva la difference.

Annandale, Va.: Good Evening, Madame Lichtenstein!

Love your chats! I was wondering if you could possibly let me know what might be in store for me in the next couple of months? My love life and career have definitely had their ups-and-downs in the last six months. I have been in a relationship for the past three months and would love to know if it has long term possibilities. Also, it has been really tough finding a job (was laid off). Will I have any luck soon?

Here are my stats. Birthdate: 06/25/1975, time of birth: 7:03 p.m. Brooklyn, N.Y.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Okay, let's see - you have sun in cancer, moon in cap, mercury in gemini, venus in leo and mars in aries. You are a very strong cancer type - in love you are generous and dramatic. You love an adoring audience of one! You take action directly and with energy. ANd you are a quick wit and sharp thinker.

You possibly have aquarius rising which may possibly give you pluto in the 10th hosue of career. More transitions in the professional sector leading to change where change is needed. Go with your inner power and strength.

Money issues may be easier through the 21st of March and I see a possible opportunity in the job sector now that Jupiter has redirected in your 6th hosueof work. Send out feelers and expect a luck break over the next few months. Don't sit at home - make your good fortune happen. Saturn in the 5th indicates more perspiration than inspiration but you will achieve so much more anyway!

Alexandria, VA: Hello Ms. Lichtenstein,

I think you are so cool! I'd love to know what's in store for me, especially in the area of my love life- am I going to meet a great guy any time soon?...DOB 8/20/1977, 7:30 p.m. in Los Angeles, Calif.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Flattery will get you anywhere....

So you have sun in leo, moon in scorpio, mercury in virgo, venus in cancer and mars in gemini. Possibly pisces rising.

You appear to others (rising sign) to be a dreamer, but you are strong than you first appear. SUn in leo is expansive, generous and theatrical. You are a careful and conservative communicator (mercury) and very sensitive in love (venus). You love to argue (mars) and fight with ideas and your mind.

Jupiter is transiting your 5th hosoue of fun and parties. If you want to meet someone, get out there and join clubs, take an art or acting class or just get a group together and have a party. Anything creative will enhance your luck.

Also, get out ther enad meet loads of new people as the sun wends through pisces and highlights your first hosueof new beginnings. You ahve until the 21st to make new inroads there.

So let me know how well you've done!

Charlene Lichtenstein: So many great questions are left in the queue and we have run out of time. Thank you all - please join me next Monday night at 6p and keep sending in those terrific questions!

Until next Monday the 18th at 6p, happy stargazing!
