Ellen Kahn
Director of Lesbian Services, Whitman-Walker Clininc

Thursday, April 12, 2001; 3 p.m. EDT

Ellen Kahn directs the lesbian services department at the Whitman-Walker Clinic, which now offers a "Maybe Baby" class for lesbians considering parenthood. It is one of many groups across the nation designed to help lesbians navigate the complex biological, social and legal issues of parenthood. Whitman-Walker’s program, offered at its Lesbian Services Health Center, has expanded to Northern Virginia and Maryland.

Kahn has a daughter with her partner. Educators, counselors and legal experts say that parenthood is becoming more common in the lesbian community, particularly in urban areas such as Washington, New York and Los Angeles.
