Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001; 1 p.m. EST
Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EST, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Afternoon, everyone. This is Fritz, the Bars and Clubs editor, and we have a full complement of Gurus with us this afternoon: Maura McCarthy (Museums), Alexa Beattie (Restaurants), Joe Heim (Music), Jen Chaney (Theatre and Books), Anne Kenderdine (Community and Holidays), Kate Gibbs (City Life) and Rhome Anderson (Turntables)
First things first: since, oh, more than half of the questions we've gotten so far are about New Year's Eve, here's our New Year's Eve page, and these are direct links to the parties and concerts sections, where you'll find more than 75 parties ideas, with more being added all the time. We've also got pages full of Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukah events.
We're also proud to announce our new contest page, where you can win tickets to events at the Kennedy Center if you're a registered user of washingtonpost.com.
I'd like to ask one favor of all our readers: please give us as many details as possible. If you ask which party will be the most fun for a group of twentysomethings, it's hard for us to help. Some have techno music. Some have hip-hop. You might hate those types of music. You might want food. You might not. We want to help you as much as possible, so please help us help you.
Oh yeah, please tell us what you're doing for New Year's Eve.
Thanks. Let's start the chat.
Arlington, Va.:
I have a plan to propose to my girlfriend in the near future, involving a restaurant with a piano. Do you have any suggestions for good restaurants that have piano entertainment? A simple search for "piano" on this site only comes up with two results because it only searches the names of the establishments, not the text. I'd prefer the restaurant be in D.C. or Northern Virginia. I would also prefer it to be non-dive-ish, and not totally crowded like the piano at the Fish Market in Old Town, Alexandria.
Thanks,
Rob
The Going Out Gurus: Rob, Rob, Rob. I (Alexa) know it's my job to be the ideas-woman in this forum, but really. Helping you decide where to propose makes me a little uneasy. I hardly know you. I do know, however, that the Prime Rib has piano most evenings, if you and your fiancee like meat? And I've enjoyed a drink or two in the piano bar at the Morrison House Hotel in Old Town. But let's get everyone in on this most important of decisions. Greater Washington, where should Rob go?
20036:
The day after Christmas, I'm spending the afternoon with a friend from Alaska and her friend from Australia. It looks like it might be too chilly for the zoo. Other than the Air & Space, what's your recommendation for 1 to 2 must see museums? Any can't miss exhibits? Thanks and happy holidays!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi 20036. There are a number of great shows closing in early January, so your friends are here just in time to see some of the year's best. "Impressionist Still Life" at the Phillips is a real crowd pleaser as is "In Response to Place: Photographs of the Nature Conservancy's Last Great Places" at the Corcoran. If they've never been to Washington before, I (Maura) would try the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History, the National Gallery of Art (some great exhibits are there right now) or the Holocaust Museum. Have fun.
Washington, D.C.:
Happy Holidays!
Restaurant question for you. My boyfriend and I will be celebrating Christmas together on Dec. 30 and I would like to find a really cute, romantic restaurant for dinner that night that isn't too over the top expensive. A fireplace would be a definate plus. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Washington, It's Alexa. What about going to the Tabard Inn. Granted, it's not a cheap place, but jeez is it romantic.
Gua Rapo:
Went to Gua Rapo last week. I was a bit surprised with the alcohol choices. There were some staples and higher end drinks.
However I was a bit supprised to see Old Crow, Aristocrat and Montezuma on the bar. These were the ones we would drink in high school if we were hard up for a drink.
I expected a little more from the Rapo.
The Going Out Gurus: This is Fritz, and I agree. I'll admit that I hadn't noticed, but I was ordering the house drinks. If you're paying $6 for a cocktail, it should have decent liquor in it.
However, this is an interesting question: would you walk into, say, the Big Hunt or Buffalo Billiards and ask the bartender for "a beer?" Probably not. Then why do people ask for "a gin and tonic" instead of "Bombay and tonic" or a "Tanqueray and tonic?" The difference between Aristocrat and Stoli is like the difference between Budweiser and Pilsner Urquell.
For Rob in Arlington:
My questions is, does the proposal actually involve the piano at the restaurant, or do you just happen to want piano music there?
- Curious
The Going Out Gurus: Yes Rob. What's the deal?
Washington:
How about tackiest place to propose? I nominate Buffalo Billiards. Why not propose during an after dinner stroll around the memorials/monuments?
The Going Out Gurus: Good idea, Washington. Anyone else?
Great Falls, VA:
Have any of you ever spent New Year's Eve at the Old Ebbitt Grill? I've made reservations there (for 6) cause it sounded like great fun for the price ($25 cover charge gets you entry into the atrium where they'll have a 10 piece swing band) and because it seems to be one of the few places without a "package" that includes a very limited menu. Whaddaya all think?
The Going Out Gurus: I think it sounds like you have a plan. And a good one.
Rockville MD!:
Here's one for New Years Eve - after your review I checked out Strike Bethesda for my self (bolwed a 128, FYI), and they had flyers out that they are having a New Years Eve Special. I have about 10 frriedns or so and every year we can never decide where to go - want to spend less than $100. So we were thinking about going bolwing on New Years! They have an all inclusive package. What do you guys think?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Rockville. Here are the details of Strike's bowling party on New Year's. You can reserve a lane for up to six people for $400 for the evening. I (Fritz) say it sounds like a great idea.
Logan Circle:
Hi Gurus!
My girlfriend is a huge Scooby Doo fan, and I'd like to take her to see the live-action Scooby Doo theater play that's coming to the Warner next month. Any word, though, on whether it's a tongue-in-cheek production nostalgic Gen-Xers could enjoy (kind of like that Brady Bunch production a few years ago), or strictly kids' fare?
The Going Out Gurus: Yoinks! Hello, Logan Circle, Jen here. If your girlfriend likes "Scooby Doo," then you probably can't go wrong by getting her tickets. I think the show is geared toward audiences of all ages, meaning children as well as adults, so I suspect it won't be as deliberately campy as the Brady Bunch production you mentioned. But I also suspect nostalgic Gen Xers, a group I consider myself part of, will dig it, too. A press release for "Scooby" promises the following: hilarious high jinx, groovy music and magical special effects. And what more can a person want besides high jinx and groovy music?
Glover Park:
Help! I need an interesting holiday activity for tomorrow night. It's sort of a date, sort of not. Preferrably something inexpensive. I'm stumped but I know all of you can handle it. Thanks so much!
The Going Out Gurus: Face it Glover Park, it's a date. Kate here. Why not get tickets to "The Royal Tenenbaums," granted I've not seen it yet, but I hear it's good, good but no "Rushmore." That'll set you back no more than twenty bones including Junior Mints, please. Or, if you're if the mood for some rock'n'roll, catch Mary Prankster at the Black Cat -- eight bucks a piece. But you specified something holiday-y: Have turkey sandwiches at American City Diner on upper Conn. Ave. They're showing "It's a Wonderful Life" on a big screen TV all weekend; also, Charles Dickens is Christmas-ish, there's "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" at DCAC. Thirty bucks for two.
Washington DC:
What bars and clubs won't have a cover on New Year's Eve?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. This is Fritz, and we've been noting this in our New Year's listings. If you scroll down the page, I've tried to put it in the "teaser" as often as possible. But here's a partial list, from memory: Fado, Chief Ike's Mambo Room, Asylum, Polly's Cafe, Velvet Lounge, Cafe Citron, Luna Park Grill and Galaxy Hut.
Anyone else know of any?
Sterling, Va:
Question about that contest for Kennedy Center tickets. Can you only enter once or every day?
The Going Out Gurus: According to the official rules, Sterling, it's one entry per person.
Falls Church, Va.:
Following up on your advice from a few weeks ago, we found ourselves "testing the classical music waters" at the Library of Congress last night. While it was generally pleasant, I think Ive come to the conclusion that my appreciation for classical music is largely environmental, and the Coolidge Auditorium looks too much like a high school. Of course it is always nice to hear beautiful old works in a beautiful old church, but I think what I might really like, would be a place where I could get a good drink. I remember a bar/cafι, where the kids from the local conservatory would play in the evenings. Can anyone recommend such a place?, Id even settle for a coffee shop, heck, even a beautiful church.
P.S. The folks at the Library of Congress started with an exotic piece; "classical" music that was written in 1983. When someone says classic music from '83, dont you normally think of Duran Duran?
Keep up the fine effort. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, whenever anyone says MUSIC, I (Jen) think of Duran Duran, but then I'm a former Duranie seeking rehabilitation, so what can you do? (My lifelong ambition is still to meet John Taylor, so obviously rehab's not working so well for me.) As far as other classical music venues, the best option we could come up with is the National Gallery of Art, where there are free classical concerts every Sunday. (Sources say the shows are in a lovely setting, not an auditorium. I wouldn't know since I'm usually home on Sundays at 6 listening to my "Rio" album.) Anyone else have any suggestions for our classical friend?
Washington, D.C.:
What's the best bar to go to on Christmas night to get over the day of family hell? Should I just stick to the old favorite, the Fox and Hounds, or are there any other good options that may be open?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. A lot of bars have indicated they'll be open on Christmas night: the Black Cat, Asylum, Fox and Hounds, Felix and Ozio, to list a few. I (Fritz) am a little disappointed to see that Madam's Organ is closed.
But those little bottles at Fox and Hounds sound mighty good after a day with the 'rents.
Vienna, VA:
Help!
The Going Out Gurus: Vienna, this is Joe, and I couldn't have said it better myself.
22030:
Hi Gurus, and happy holidays to all of you.
I'm not a regular church-goer, but my boyfriend and I were thinking of going to a Christmas Eve service. Do you know of any great churches in the area (Nothern Va)? I'd love to go to one of those big, old-fashioned churches, maybe in Alexandria? Any thoughts?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi 22030. I (Maura) think if you are willing to go to D.C. three of the biggest churches there - the National Cathedral, Metropolitan Baptist Church (1225 R St. NW, 202/238-5000) and Shrine of the Immaculate Conception are sure to have some rousing choruses. I am less familiar with Alexandria, but there's the Christ Church (703/549-1450). We gurus were sad to miss the Presbyterian Meeting House's (703/549-6670) recent performance by Felix Hell, but their Christmas service may be worth a trip.
Washington, D.C.:
Alright Gurus, please help me out. Any suggestions for how a single gal (mid 20s) can spend New Year's Eve? I do have a few options right now, but, all my friends are married/involved and are planning on spending it with their honeys. I just don't feel like being the third wheel in every case. Any ideas? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Alrighty DC, this is Kate and you're question is a real cookie. I'm guessing you've been invited to parties with couples, true? If you've been invited, then its highly likely that other swinging singles have too. Don't sweat it.
But if you'd like to attend an event with coupled friends where the likelihood of watching others smooch at midnight is tempered with the possibility of finding someone to smooch too, then I heartily recommend Peaches O'Dell at the Black Cat. It's a fantastically enthusiasic crowd that shows up for the speakeasy vibe. Everyone dances with everyone, get ticketed.
Silver Spring, Md.:
My wife and a are middle aged with no children. For New Year's Eve we don't want to go to a nightclub or restaurant with a jacked-up price list (and little atmosphere beyond someone yelling "whoopee" at midnight)but also aren't looking for strictly a family activity. We were disappointed to hear that the First Night Montgomery won't take place this year. Ideas? We're even considering the Kennedy Center though I'm not the biggest classical music fan. Remember when the giant stamp used to come down the Old Post Office tower at midnight?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Silver Spring, this is Anne. If you like the spirit of First Night Montgomery, you might want to try various other First Nights in the area. Heading to the Kennedy Center is also a swell idea, but you don't need to be limited to classical music. On New Year's Eve, there will be performances of Shear Madness at 6 and 9 p.m., "Dirty Blonde" at 8:30, and -- Kate's clever idea -- "Cinderella." Now there's a creative way celebrate the midnight hour -- with the famous story of the clock striking 12. You could always cap it off with dessert nearby afterwards. Another alterative to the nightclub scene: take a cruise on the Potomac with the Parrot Heads. An appreciation of Jimmy Buffett is required.
Bethesda, Md.:
I figure I'd submit my question early to have a good chance of getting it answered! Could you tell me which restaurants in D.C. are having a New Year's Day brunch? I saw only a few listed on the holiday guide so far. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, this is Alexa. Word has it Kobalt at the Ritz-Carlton is having a $65 champagne and sushi brunch on New Year's day. And Gabriel is doing their fabulous suckling pig brunch that day for around $30 per person, I think. But I'd hurry to make that reservation if I were you.
Arlington, VA:
The proposal definitely involves the piano. if you'd like some details: i plan on singing a particular song that i've learned and she loves (it will be special because of the lyrics, and the fact i don't play piano). my plan is to arrange the date ahead of time w/ the restaurant/piano talent so i can go up and play the song sometime during dinner. i'd like a piano place because it will be more of a surprise if the piano is somewhat inconspicuous to start off w/.
The Going Out Gurus: Rob, you're a cuty. Can I marry you?
Great Falls, Va.:
Please tell me where in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to go after dinner if I want a place where I can take a romantic date to enjoy some desserts, drinks and listen to music the type of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holliday.
Elegant atmosphere, mellow music (live bands preferable), and a nice menu for desserts are the main criteria. It seems D.C. has too many noisy and smoky clubs for the young and restless but not enough places for the more subdued sophisticated traditional romanticists. Thank you for your advice.
The Going Out Gurus: Here are a few suggestions, Great Falls. You might try grabbing a seat at the bar at Maggiano's, either in Tyson's or Friendship Heights. (I (Jen) tend to like the Fship Heights location more, mainly because it's not nestled in a mall.) I've never been to Maggiano's without hearing some Frank. You might also consider a trek to Rockville's Timpano's -- they have a swing night every third Thursday of the month with dancing. And lastly, if you haven't tried it yet, Felix hosts a Sinatra night every Wednesday.
Washington, DC:
So a group of my friends and I are trying to make New Year's Eve plans...keyword "trying". The problem is finding the right fit for everyone. Half the group doesn't want to do black tie or a big club. The other half, myself included, wants to get dressed (not necessarily black tie)and doesn't want to go to the same old bars we all went to in college (ie Madhatter, Front Page). Can you help us find a place that's right for all of us?
The Going Out Gurus: That depends, Washington. If you have money, you might want to consider something like Eighteenth Street Lounge (you don't have to wear black tie, but you do have to dress up) or MCCXXIII. There's the swing party with Peaches O'Dell at the Black Cat, where half the crowd dresses up, and the other half just irons their shirts. The party upstairs at Bohemian Caverns will have funk and hip-hop, but people will be dressed up. Whitlow's will also be split between dressed and not dressed (probably, based on previous experiences).
Hope some of that helps.
Annapolis, Md.:
Hi Gurus,
Submitting early due to possible meeting interference. So, a group of us Annapolitans have just decided that we are going to do D.C. for New Year's. I have been designated as the planner. The plan is to take advantage of the great hotel rates, and then find cool places to party. Hotel is taken care of. Places to party is not. We don't have a ton of money, so most of the events listed on the EG (for $100 and up) are out. We were more thinking of choosing an area and bar hopping or finding a fun bar to spend the evening in. Do you most wonderful gurus have any suggestions as to where we could go? We don't have a lot of access to what is going on, aside from the big promotional parties, so if you could eitehr give us some of that type of info or steer us to a place where we can find it, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks and have a wonderful holiday!
The Going Out Gurus: "Most of the events listed on the EG" are $100 and up? This is Fritz, Annapolis, and I beg to differ. I'd wager that at least half - if not more - are around $50 or less. Check the list again.
If you want to go bar crawling - and find places that will be free or low-cost, Adams Morgan has the highest concentration of free events, but there are still only a few places to hop.
Tell us where your hotel is, and maybe we can recommend something close in.
Rockville, Md.:
OK, I'm hoping you can help me. I can't dance to popular music to save my life. I look at music videos and know I can do it if I just had some instruction. I see all the time there are places that hold tango or swing lessons, but no club dancing. Can you help me find a class that will teach me to do a little bump and grind so that I can feel more comfortable on a club dance floor? THANKS!
The Going Out Gurus: I (Maura) admire your gumption, Rockville. The D.C. Dance Collective at Friendship Heights offers hip-hop classes as does Dance Place in Northeast. For more classes check out their website at www.danceplace.org. Joy of Motion with locations in D.C. and Bethesda offers a variety of classes, including belly dancing which Fritz swears will really help your swing.
Christmas in Washington, D.C.:
My 20-year-old brother and I (22) won't be able to go home for Christmas this year so I'm trying to come up with some fun, festive activities to keep our minds off of not being home on those two days. Are there any mid-priced places for dinner either Christmas Eve-Day or any activities that we could both enjoy? We do all kinds of activites: sports, concerts, museums etc., just not "usual" D.C. things because we've lived around here a few years. Any recommendations would be so appreciated! You guys are the best!
Happy Holidays!
The Going Out Gurus: Kate Trust me CiW, you'll never want to go home again. Kate here, and I strongly recommend that you catch the 11 a.m. screening of "The Lord of the Rings" at the Uptown --just buy tickets in advance. You guys can cruise neighborhoods for lights -- the display at 1746 Pimmit Drive, Falls Church is hi-larious. And find yourself a feast -- be it curry or oysters.
Enough About Us:
What are you Gurus doing for the holidays?!
The Going Out Gurus: Ah, we thought you'd never ask. This is Joe and I'm going to fill you in all of our new years eve plans. Fritz is renting out RFK stadium for a party for his closest friends. (None of us have been invited). Rhome is going to spend the night alphabetizing his massive lp collection. Alexa and her hubbie will dream up new ways to keep their baby from waking up before 6 am. Kate, Maura and Jen are going to try and crash Dick Cheney's party (we can't tell you where that's going to be.) Anne is being very secretive. And me, I'm looking forward to a night of non-stop Scrabble playing. Pretty exciting all around, I think.
Silver Spring, Md.:
Hey guys, I want to have a little birthday get together early next month. I've done the sit down dinners, now I just want something a little more laid back. Do you know of any bars or clubs in D.C. that would be cool for up to 10 folks? Thanks so much!
The Going Out Gurus: There are tons of options that fit this bill, so I (Jen) will just name a few. Try Aroma in Cleveland Park -- stake out an area in the back room and it's almost like your own private party. Other loungey options you might try are Gazuza or Chi Cha. Also consider Lucky Bar or Cafe Citron in Dupont -- at Citron, there's a hidden nook up the stairs and away from the often crowded main floor. Again, if you get there early and can spread out up there, you've got your own little VIP room.
Vienna, VA:
I hope the gurus can help. Two friends and I are interesting in going out for an elegant tea on Monday -- 12/24. We saw the article in the Post about the Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton, but were wondering if there are other options. We want lovely tea, finger sandwiches, lovely setting... Please help!
The Going Out Gurus: Vienna, It's Alexa and if you don't mind, I'm going to use this as an opportunity to teach. On the front of the Entertainment Guide is a purple search box. If you type the word "tea" into that box and press GO, another page will pop up and I belive the first thing listed on that page is an article called Afternoon Tea that contains 30 or so places that specialize in just what you are looking for. See how you go and get back to me with any probs.
Lougin' on NYE:
Curious about recommending 18th street as a NYE destination.... they're charging $60-$75 cover - for what appears to be nothing. You still have to buy your drinks - and I don't think they have food. Love the lounge, but I'd do it another weekend.
The Going Out Gurus: Two words for you, LONYE: "Thievery Corporation." To me (Fritz), it's worth paying double the 9:30 Club price to see them DJ in an intimate environment.
Arlington, Va:
Hey gurus! Need your sage advice. My 23rd birthday is next Thurs, and I'm planning to get maybe 10 or so people together and go out, a bit swanky, but not expensive since everyone's all out of cash after Christmas. I have it narrowed down to two options: A mini bar crawl starting at Guarapo near me (no cover) and ending at Cities in AMorgan (again, no cover). Choice B: holing up at Platinum for the night, since ladies get in free pre-midnight and guys are $10. But my friend thinks the music sucks. What are they playing there? Which would you all choose? (All friends are in their 20's)
The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, Rhome here. Personally I'd say ixnay on the Atinumplay, you got house and trance there on Thursday night, which isn't bad if that's your thing. You have a group though, so the other option would provide the variety you need methinks. I was once a person who looked on in confusion at the phenomenon of the "bar crawl", but this year I have engaged in the activity several times with memorable results. I'm not one to down a lot of alcohol so the crawling for me was more in pursuit of the music, although the following destinations on a few routes I've made all will serve you up some healthy cocktails: Tom Brazil (live samba), Habana Village (live & dj'ed salsa), Bukom (reggae), Rendezvous (chill-out house music), Blue Room (downtempo, house, ambient), Toulouse (live jazz), Columbia Station (live jazz), Rumba Cafe (live samba and/or salsa). Mix & match and have fun.
Tacky proposal spots::
Metro Center platform...
Roosevelt Bridge...
Buffet table at Phillips Seafood...
Outside the DC Courthouse...
Ah, l'amour.
The Going Out Gurus: Some more ideas ...
New Years Plans:
For those of you out there still deciding which New Years event to go to -- Avoid these hyped-up, overpriced "gala" events that promise open-bar, buffet of food, etc., but ultimately end up being a letdown. My advice -- spend $50 a person and throw your own party while ringing in the New Year with a group of your closest friends!
The Going Out Gurus: Good advice.
Arlington, VA:
If I recall correctly, the bar at 701 Club is kind of what Rob might be looking for. On weekends, the small bar area, in the later dinner and after-dinner hours, has a piano and stand-up bass combo playing jazz. There's not many chairs in the bar area that aren't at the bar but, then again, it's usually not very crowded and the atmosphere is nice.
The Going Out Gurus: I think we should dedicate this chat to old Rob. Suggestions for him are flooding in.
Bethesda, Maryland:
Why is everyone going on dates and getting engaged this weekend? Am I the only single girl left in the area? Apparently, after this weekend, I will be!
The Going Out Gurus: Oh relax, Bethesda. Here's an idea: Bethesda gal and Chevy Chase poster/New Year's Eve single guy why don't you e-mail me at maura.mccarthy@wpni.com and we'll let you exchange e-mail addresses? No harm there and that should make us all feel a little less lonely, no?
Bethesda, Maryland:
Do you know anything about the Matzah Ball on Monday night?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have never been to the Matzo Ball but I have friends who have. Based on their experience, it's basically like any other night at a bar except there are more Jewish people in the room. You might meet a future mate, but more than likely you'll just have a decent night out with friends, which is always a good thing. I do have a friend who met someone there a few years ago and they're getting married this spring. Of course, he's not Jewish, but that's the way the matzo ball sometimes bounces. (Ba-dum-bum.)
Washington DC:
Afternoon Gurus. I am trying to decide what bar/club to do for New Years . . . if you had to pick between 18th St. Lounge, Felix, or Five, which would you all choose?
The Going Out Gurus: It depends, Washington. Of the three, ESL has the best DJs (Thievery Corporation), but you have to pay for your drinks. Felix has a live jazz/funk band. Five is going to be packed with a younger crowd, but it does have an open bar and hip-hop DJs until 'til 6 a.m.
If you want to dance: Five. If you want to lounge, ESL.
For the not a date person:
Either drive to see lights or tromp around downtown, check out the lit up buildings (todays post) and the Christmas trees.
The Going Out Gurus: Definately not a date suggestions. Any more?
Mt. Rainier:
I know the P&G old greenbelt is showing It's a wonderful life and White Christmas; are there any other movie theaters showing old Christmas movies?
The Going Out Gurus: The only other one we know of is the American City Diner (which isn't technically a theater) -- it's screening "It's a Wonderful Life" this weekend. Personally I (Jen) recommend renting "A Christmas Story" and sucking on some spiked egg nog in the comfort of your own home. You could also watch the 24-hour "A Christmas Story" marathon on TNT, which starts Christmas Eve night. Let us know how many viewings it takes before you start to empathize with the Bumpus dogs.
Washington, D.C.:
Where is a great place to take my 2-year-old and 5-year-old ice skating? Also for them to see some cool Christmas lights?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi D.C. We have a whole listing of area ice rinks. If you are up for a drive Tykes on Ice in the Inner Harbor could be a treat. For holiday lights I (Maura) might try one of these light festivals.
Herndon, VA:
Hey Guru's, I am going out this evening to celebrate a birthday, an engagement, the selling of a house and the purchase of a new house, and of course the holidays. We would like to find a lively restaurant where there is a festive atmosphere, preferably with music in the background. Any suggestions? Cuisine isn't important, would be flexible there. Thinking Adams Morgan, or DC would be fun this time of year. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't go out much downtown. Thanks, Happy Holidays
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Herndon. Sounds like you'll be a wild and crazy group. For a festive time, I always head to Cafe Atlantico. Caipirinhas and guacamole mashed tableside say celebration to me.
Wash, DC:
What's the lowdown on Topaz's sister
hotel Rouge?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. I (Fritz) am going this weekend - it was supposed to open last Friday, but I heard there were some problems, so it's opening this weekend. I can't wait to see the bar, though -- supposed to be very glam and very Hollywood.
Piano Question-:
The Restaurant 701 (701 Penn Ave) and
Bombay Club (right near the White
House) both have piano players and a
nice atmosphere. Oh, and the 4
Season's (Georgetown) bar/lounge area
is perfect too! Obviously check them all
out beforehand and decide which you like
best!
The Going Out Gurus: More piano ideas ...
DURAN DURAN!!!:
To the John Taylor Guru fan, I have two words for you: ROGER TAYLOR!!!
- A recovering Duran Duran junkie
The Going Out Gurus: All right, Simon LeBon I (Jen) can see. Maybe even Nick Rhodes, since he took androgyny to new heights. But Roger?
I guess he is "the quiet Duranie."
Jesus, I think we both need therapy.
Dupont, DC:
Any idea when that B.E.D.
restaurant/bar/club is opening and
where?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Dupont. This is Fritz. B.E.D., which is now called Home, is supposed to be moving into the old Volt nightclub on F Street, next to Platinum. Last I heard (earlier this week), it's opening in February.
Arlington, Va.:
Last weekend I was driving past all the new shops around Pentagon City (on Joyce Street) and I noticed a new ice skating rink in front of the Bally's. Didn't have time to check it out, unfortunately. What's the story -- can you rent skates there? What are the prices like?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington. Maura again. The rink you speak of is at the new Pentagon Row shopping development. You can rent skates, but I am not sure of prices. Maybe one of our readers has been?
Why are we all broke??:
Man, I have never seen a group like us so hard up for cash!! I thank the heavens we live in a city where there is so much free stuff. I also want to appeal to my fellow singles to not let this ONE NIGHT of the ENTIRE FRIGGIN' YEAR determine your self worth!
The Going Out Gurus: Word. And funny thing is, the cheaper the party, the better time you'll probably have. No joke.
Arlington, VA:
Does anyone know about a place in Adams Morgan called Arbor? I believe it opened in the Spring, but last time I was in the area it looked closed. Did it fail that quickly?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington, this is Kate. Arbor's open -- and will incidentally be serving brunch on NY Day (11-3), but I'm not a supafan. I tried Arbor in the summer with high hopes, but it was, like it's predecessor, a bore. It always looks so great in the spring, but simply put: brunch here is just not as delicious as it should be.
sw, dc:
hey gurus, wanted to let you know of another place to ice skate--right near freedom plaza. a lovely little area, never crowded and then you can swing by the national tree after. quite romantic too for a date or great with a group of friends. after all that outsideness, head to old ebbit for a hot toddy!
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, SW. Great idea and check out this story on Freedom Plaza's new "light show" that runs through Jan. 6.
Bethesda:
Where is Rouge?
The Going Out Gurus: On the northern corner of 16th Street NW and Scott Circle.
Washington, DC:
It goes without saying that Rob will have to report back on his proposing adventure!
The Going Out Gurus: Got that right! Rob, you must let us know -- and bring the missus.
Tacky Places to propose.... continued:
I vote for proposing at ANY sporting event as the tackiest way to propose
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks
Somewhere, USA:
I've got a question about your criteria for the Entertainment Guide. There are two events that I would like to attend in the first week of January. I checked the Entertainment Guide to find exact date, time, and location. I could not find either event, even though they are both in big venues. I personally believe it is due to the fact that these events seem a little too "redneck." (I find this laughable, as both events appeal to all sorts of people.) I hope I am wrong. Obviously, at least one Washington Post reader is interested in these events! How do you determine which events are included and which are not?
The events in question are:
- WWF wrestling at MCI Center Jan. 3
- Silverado Gun Show at Montgomery Fairgrounds Jan. 6-7
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Somewhere, this is Anne, and thanks for your question. We include events in the Entertainment Guide if we think those events are entertaining. We think the WWF Smackdown on Jan. 3 at the MCI Center is definitely entertaining. We do not have information on the Montgomery gun show or any other gun shows because we don't think gun shows are entertaining. And, we don't often include hobbyist expos for things like gems or computers.
We list events that we think appeal to a wide variety of people or can represent the various interests of our readers. I think Fritz would tell you that he loves going to "redneck" bars.
Being human, we can only do so many events at a time, so sometimes if you can't find an event, it's possible we didn't get to it yet.

I am going to be leaving tomorrow for 12 days in London, UK. Do you have any suggestions for New Year's there. Or a paper that host an email chat similar to this one over there so I can ask them? I am 24 and going with a college friend who is also 24. We are both single females.
Have a happy holiday and new year.
Thanks
The Going Out Gurus: I am so JEALOUS!!! This is Rhome, and when I got an email with this info I almost passed out. If you love hip-hop, jazz, soulful dance music and rare grooves like I do, this is the dream New Year's Eve event. Chief Anglophile on staff Fritz Hahn also says to peruse the listings at Time Out and NME. You can buy tickets on the latter site.
Washington, DC:
A word on the Matzo Ball Gurus... if you are on the younger side (early, mid 20s), I would steer clear of Polly Esther's Gefilte Fish Gala and opt for the Lulu's or 18th Street Lounge event. Went to PE's last year, and everyone smelled like a latka and all the men were like my father's age and checking me out. Just an insight.
The Going Out Gurus: Everyone smelled like a latke -- that's the kind of sensory detail our readers are looking for.
Thanks for the tip, Washington!
Arlington Birthday Girl again:
I'm an idiot! I forgot to mention that said bar crawl or Platinum would be happening on Friday night, not on Thurs. Does your advice change?
The Going Out Gurus: Rhome has spoken. Advice still stands. Now go getcha crawl on.
Arlington, VA:
Hi Gurus -
Will Metro be running extra hours on New Year's Eve? I'll be at a party in Gaithersburg, and since I plan on drinking, I won't be driving. Also, I really don't want to spend the night there.
Happy New Year!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington, and Happy New Year to you! Happily, Metro will be open until 2 a.m. New Year's Eve. And if you or anyone else get in a pinch, remember that SoberRide can give you free taxi rides home.
WDC:
Hello! Your list of New Year's events is great and your answer to Washington DC was just what I was looking for, but what about age ranges -- I have friends coming from out of town for New Year's Eve and I am cracking under the pressure. I'm looking for something in the 50-80$ range, not super-formal and a place where 30-somethings will be happy. The place we went last year was so young it was a little depressing....
The Going Out Gurus: Well, WDC, we can tell you that age ranges don't massively change for this one night. Heaven and Hell and Crush will attract a 20-something audience. But you can't say, for example, that Polly Esther's and Felix will only attract one age range.
Washington, DC:
Hey Joe, I LOVE Scrabble? Wanna play?
The Going Out Gurus: Only if you promise not to challenge any of my made up words.
Washington, DC:
I'm a new resident to the metro area. Can you recommend a few good restaurants and bars in the area around Penn & 13th? My parents are coming for Christmas and I'd like to go to a good moderately price eatery near there with them.
The Going Out Gurus: What about TenPenh (Tenth and Penn)?
Bethesda, MD:
My husband and I are spending Christmas morning with his family, but will have the afternoon and evening free. We were thinking of spending the rest of the day volunteering somewhere. Any recommendations on where to find these opportunities?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. This is Maura. Kudos to you and hour husband for volunteering. Check out the lower right hand corner of our holiday guide under "season of giving" for a whole list of opportunites for those willing to pitch in a little extra this time of year. Enjoy the holidays.
Go Skins!:
What do I need to know about going to a game? Should I brave the beltway or take the Metro? Also, it is an early game (1 pm), do I want to tailgate?
Fans out there, what is your experience?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) have been to a few games, always via Metro. Just get there at least an hour early to give yourself time to get over to the stadium and get through security.
VA:
Is everything closed on Dec. 25 except for the 7-11 stores?
The Going Out Gurus: No, VA. Lots of bars and restaurants will be serving drinks and dinner. And Archibald's is open 365 days a year.
Judiciary Square:
I'm submitting early again 'cause I've got a meeting to run to at 1pm. Since you guys are a wealth of info (We're not worthy!), any ideas where I can take my girl for dinner and dancing to some jazzy Christmas music?
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Tonight at Timpano's Italian Chophouse in Rockville, the Radio King Orchestra is performing a few hours of swinging holiday favorites. And it's free!
Washington, D.C.:
I want to take my friend out to celebrate her conversion to Judaism. Are there any decent Kosher or Israeli places in the area? We're willing to go up to Baltimore if there are not any closer.
The Going Out Gurus: Washington, the best place to recommend for you, I think, is Felix.
Bethesda, maryland:
I'm having a birthday party at Strike in January. Do you guys want to come?
The Going Out Gurus: Sure. Send an invitation to nightlife@washingtonpost.com
Arlington, Va.:
Hello crew! My folks are going out with friends to celebrate an anniverary, and they are looking for a place with dancing in the D.C. area. Now these are my parents, so we're not talking about Polyesthers here. I'm thinking more in terms of hotels, etc. for classy yet fun dancin. We've been searching for weeks but no luck yet. Can you help? I want to help them have a wonderful evening!
Thanks, and have a great holiday season!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Arlington. The crew says happy holidays to you! I (Anne) checked in with Fritz and we recommend Timpano on the third Thursday or every month, Glen Echo's ballroom and Felix Mondays-Wednesdays, with Sinatra Night on Wednesday. Tell us how your search goes.
Fairfax VA:
Hoping you can help me help out a friend of mine. This guy promised his g/f he'd take her to the Four Seasons' NYE party. Unfortunately he lolligagged and the party sold out. Do you know of any places that specialize in tickets to events such as this, or where he might find a pair of tickets to this event specifically? And failing that, can I have a link to what I imagine is a fairly in-depth page on NYE parties you guys have probably already done?
The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm. I don't think the people who scalp front-row seats for Britney and Puffy will have D.C. Society of Young Professionals tickets. You might want to call the group and ask to be put on a waiting list, if they have one.
downtown dc:
where are some good kind of low key places to play darts? you know, not too dave&buster-ish?
thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: My (Fritz's) best bets: Mickey's Patio on Capitol Hill, Buffalo Billiards and Bedrock Billiards.
Wash, DC:
What do the gurus want for Xmas?
The Going Out Gurus: Kate wants Real Estate.
Maura wants cashmere.
Anne wants dance lessons.
Jen wants a Red Ryder BB Gun.
Rhome wants to be in London.
Fritz wants Arsenal to take maximum points over the next few weeks.
Joe and Alexa want the chat to be over.
And so it is ... see you all next Thursday. Happy holidays.
