Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EST, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.
Today's discussion ended at 2:30. The transcript is below.

The Going Out Gurus:
Welcome back, "Got Plans?" fans. It's a big day in Washington, as the lighting of the national Christmas tree takes place tonight at 5. Speaking of Christmas, you should check out our tour of The White House's holiday decorations -- the public can't take the tour this year so we've brought the tour to you. We're thoughtful like that.
Anyhoo, the whole crew -- Kate (entertainment editor), Anne (calendar editor), Fritz (nightlife), Joe (music), Alexa (restaurants), Maura (museums), Rhome (our knowledgeable DJ-about-town) and me, Jen (books, theater and movies gal) -- is pumped after dancing at last night's holiday party to Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, so we're more than ready to take your questions. Whether you've got a Christmas query, Hanukah hassles or regular old "what can I do in DC?" woes, we're here for you. Fire away.
Bingo Seeking:
A strange one --
One of my girlfriends has become obsessed with playing bingo. Anywhere we could go in the District?
The Going Out Gurus: Bingo Seeker, my name is Kate, let me be your Finder: Off the top of my head I can think of two avenues. Firstly, Drag Bingo every Tuesday at Chaos in Dupont. Seats at this subterranean P Street club fill up fast, it's best to make a reservation. The vibe is playful, New York-y at this gay club. But if you'd prefer to go old skool, church hall and juice table, check the community calendar listings in the neighborhood weeklies on Thursdays. I've just checked Alexandria/Arlington and found nought, but maybe next week.
Sterling:
So, what's the take on the new Dream club?
Is it a very diverse crowd or Republic Gardens Part II? And is it free before 10 p.m.?
What's the deal on getting VIP? Pay for it or is it a hookup? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Sterling. This is Fritz. The diversity at Dream depends on the night. Thursdays has a more international flavor, with trance and Persian music, but with the Gardens now closed for renovation, its drawing a very similar crowd. I havent seen anything about Dream being free before 10, which is sad, because I used to love going to the Gardens for the no-cover lavish buffet on Fridays. As for the VIP floors, either you can buy a membership (starting at $5,000 a year) or you can do it the old fashioned way make friends with the promoters, get on their mailing lists and hope they throw some access your way.
Judiciary Square:
I am submitting early since I'll be out during the discussion. And I always get so many ideas from you guys. (1) I am going to Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis tomorrow to see Walter Beasley. I've never seen him or been there. What is the atmosphere like? Is the food any good or should I plan to eat somewhere in Annapolis? (2) I heard Alicia Keyes is headlining a concert later this year. I was thinking about going but I'm not sure if she's got that much stuff out there. Does anyone know how she did at Nation the other week? Thanks much!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello JS, this is Joe. (1) I'm a big fan of the Rams Head. It's nice and small and breaks down the distance between the performer and the crowd. Sort of feels like someone you know is on stage instead of just another band or musician. As far as the food goes, I think it could stand some improvement. First of all there's not a great selection and what they do serve hasn't been too impressive. Anyone else out there want to weigh in on Rams Head fare? (2) Alicia Keys is indeed coming to Constitution Hall, but not until January 23. Tickets go on sale this Saturday at 11 a.m.
Too pooped for New Year's Eve in Arlington:
Gurus,
Are any restaurants having brunch events on New Year's Day? We're flying back into D.C. the night of the 31st and will be too lagged to party that night. Cheers!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, it's Alexa. I think I'd better preempt the questions about holiday dining and festivities at restaurants, by saying that the list as it stands so far should be going up on the site tomorrow. I've been badgering (?) places for a couple of weeks now, and some are still unsure as to what they plan to offer. While quite a few that are not based in hotels may be closed Christmas Eve and Day, many, it seems, are planning on being open NY Eve.
Gurus- only you would know!:
I am looking to buy my Blarney Ball tickets early for the February event -- but the site is down and I cant find any information.
Would you be able to track down the info on when the site may be up for ticket sales? Is it still on?
Many thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey there. This is Fritz, and I can only give you the info I had from last year - the number was 202/737-4949. I called the chair and am hoping he calls back before the show is over. if not, send me an e-mail (nightlife@washingtonpost.com) and I'll try to hook you up.
Washington, D.C.:
Hi Gang! My parents and siblings are coming into town this weekend to celebrate my birthday. Can you recommend a fun, yummy, not-too-expensive place to do brunch? Secondly, any post-brunch activities? I'll skip the national Christmas tree, thank you. That netting of garish ornaments just doesn't do it for me... And we did Mount Vernon last year. Any thoughts are appreciated. Cheers!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington and happy birthday. As for eats, check out our brunch bunch round up and see what sets your mouth watering. There's always the gospel brunch at the Corcoran, which could lead you straight into an afternoon stroll through its galleries. Other post brunch options: a tour of the National Cathedral, the Newseum and its National Geographic women photographers show or a a baby elephant. I (Maura) say have fun.
Rockville, Md.:
My boyfriend and I like to just sit and talk sometimes, but don't want to be limited to restaurants. Do you know of any parks that are open at night where we can do that? We don't want to have to sit in a restaurant all the time and we are broke and don't want to sit in a restaurant and talk if we don't intend to buy anything.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Rockville. This is Anne, and the reason many parks are closed at night is for safety -- a good thing. And I'm guessing that your reason for wanting to go somewhere to talk is so that you can do some people- or surroundings-watching at the same time ... otherwise, what's cheaper than the couch in your living room? Why not have a Tryst at low-cost coffeeshops? Or, MoCo native Jen Chaney suggests the one block in downtown Rockville near the movie theater and California Tortilla. I also like the steps of the Jefferson Memorial.
Glover Park:
My roommates and I have decided not to get each other Christmas presents this year and instead all go out for dinner together this Saturday before the holiday madness starts. Suggestions please! We have just a few limitations: the Bethesda, Dupont or Adams Morgan area, fairly cheap and one roommate is a chicken nuggets, hamburger and french fry-only-type-guy. We've thought about expanding his horizons and trying Jaleo but wanted to have other options as well. Please help! Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Glover Park. Alexa here. Yes, try to coax that old meat-and-potato-eater to Jaleo. You can't really go wrong there. Otherwise, what about Black's or Cafe Deluxe?
wiredog:
They can't light the Christmas Tree today, it's 70 degrees out!
The Going Out Gurus: Oh, they can and will, wiredog. After all, Christmas isn't in the weather, it's in our hearts. I think Papa Smurf said that in the Smurfs' Christmas Special.
Reston, Va.:
What does in mean when, in a movie theater's listings, it says "no passes?" I have some free movie passes that expire at the end of the month, and I wanted to use them to see the Harry Potter movie, but this film has been marked "no passes" since it was released. I am assuming that this means I can't use my free movie passes: is this correct? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: This is Jen and yes, Reston, you have assumed correctly. When they say no passes, it means you can't use your free tickets. Naturally, they are sticking to this rule with "Harry Potter" because they want to make as much money as they can from the little wizard. Having scanned the movie listings, though, there appear to be theaters that aren't such sticklers about the no pass rule. If your tickets are for a specific theater chain (and I assume they are) try looking at other locations farther from home to see if you can see "Potter" there. If that doesn't work, well, I suppose you'll have to catch another movie. Or you could always see if the person behind the counter is in the holiday spirit and will let you use your pass anyway. Good luck.
Sister Turning 18:
I read "Where to Go If You're Under 21." I will be taking my sister out for her 18th birthday. Any suggestions in Maryland?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Rockville. Your options are a bit more limited if you aren't going into D.C. If you are looking for a club - and that's my (Maura's guess) -- try Dinosaurs in Laurel.
Washington, D.C.:
This weekend taking the parents to see the candlelight tours in Old Towne. Any recommendations for dining options there?
The Going Out Gurus: Washington. I'll address this to both you and District who is looking for the same thing. It's Alexa and I always feel that good dining options in OT are less plentiful than they should be. But I'll toss out my faves: Geranio is one (but pricey), South Austin Grill is another. The Majestic is new and quite the trendiest place Old Town has to offer at the mo. I think Il Porto is popular, a sort of ersatz red-checkered Italian spot with a piano player close to the River. But I've never been too impressed. For coffee afterwards? Misha's is the place.
20009:
Hi. Do you have any information regarding book clubs in Dupont Circle for mid20-year olds? More specifically, for a liberal Asian?
The Going Out Gurus: Hullo neighbor, this is Kate. And I think you've hit the jackpot -- as long as you're free tonight. The Dupont Circle Book Club is hosting a happy hour from 6:30 to 9:30 at, of all places, the Metro Cafe, featuring DJ Neville Chamberlin. It's all to benefit the Washington Literacy Council, and there'll be door prizes -- like books. I think this is the perfect opportunity to shop around. Ask members about the club's book list and other opportunities.
Alternately, I think you'd be well served by taking a trip up Connecticut Ave. to Politics & Prose. On the main floor there is column of shelves displaying their current in-house book clubs and titles -- I'm sure there are more than 15. Don't see a perfect fit? Ask the staff. One of the things I love most about P&P is their ability to bring communities together.
Alexandria, Va.:
I am submitting this question early because I will not have access to a computer later in the day... but, I am meeting a male friend tonight for drinks -- he does not want to go to D.C. tonight, as I had suggested Ozio's or the Blue Room. Is there anywhere in Virginia you might suggest?
Thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Alexandria. This is Fritz. You might want to try Arlington's new Gua-Rapo, which shares an owner with Chi-Cha Lounge and Gazuza. It's the closest thing to that scene in Va. I also like the Majestic Lounge in Alexandria, whether you sit in the back or the No. 9 lounge upstairs. It's a funky little place with good drinks and wine flights.
Washington, D.C.:
After reading your review of Dream, I'd like to know what your "top five best looking" clubs and bars in Washington are.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. This is Fritz. In no particular order, they'd be Dream, Gordon Biersch, Dragonfly, Platinum and ... hmmm. Then it gets a little sticky. Maybe Modern, maybe MCCXXIII, maybe Ozio, maybe the Raven. Possibly the palm trees and white sand at Island Jim's.
Anyone else have any ideas?
Annapolis MD:
Ex-Bethesda'er wondering if you all could give me the scoop on Lewie's/Chrome. Does Lewie own both or just the Lewie's side? Will the music being played there be along the lines of the music played at the old Lewie's? One of Lewie's bartenders now works out here and we have been discussing the change and would appreciate any info you could offer!
Thanks!
Also, shameless Annapolis promotion: Anyone looking for a holiday event this weekend should come to Annapolis on Saturday night for the Annual Eastport Yacht Club Parade of lights. It runs from 6 - 8. For more info, check out: www.eastportyc.org/LightsParade/default.htm
Also, tonight is Midnight Madness, where all stores on Main Street are open until midnight, many with free drinks and snacks, and live music all over the place.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Annapolis. This is Fritz. Lewie's owns both sides, and you can pass freely between the two clubs, so if there's a cover on one side, you have to pay to go to both. The music will be very similar to the old club, I'm told, with local rock bands, college bands, roots rock bands, you name it.
Thanks for the Annapolis info, btw.
Dining options in Old Town:
There's also Union Street Public House (casual), Thai Old Town, Portner's (casual), & Chadwick's (also casual). Pretty safe choices.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for chiming in.
re: Rams Head:
Awesome Jamaican Jerk Rasta Pasta - if you like spicy. Within the Onstage part of the place, it's very low key and conservative. Stay seated, no dancing, etc. It's a great place for an intimate show, though.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip.
Annapolis, MD:
Guess you might get this regularly, but what are your favorite 'politico' bars -- probably Capitol Hill or Downtown: that have good 'political' atmosphere or people? Bullfeathers, Capitol Hill Lounge, Politiki, others? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey Annapolis - we like Capitol Lounge, Tortilla Coast, the bar at the Caucus Room, Bullfeathers, the Hawk and Dove and Stetson's (okay, that's in Adams Morgan). Politiki isn't the politico hang it once was, I'm afraid.
top five best looking clubs:
Dream blows away the competition!
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks.
Bethesda:
Hi there! I was reading one of the archives that mentioned outdoor ice skating. I love ice skating and had been looking forward to going to one of the outdoor rinks this holiday season. I heard there was one down on the Mall by the National Gallery, and right down the road from me near the Bethesda meteo. But its almost 70 outside right now. Any word on if, how, when, or where some of the outdoor rinks will open? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda, sKate here. I believe it's just too warm for the outdoor rink in Bethesda -- let alone tinsel, etc. I drove by last Sunday and it looked closed. Word on the street is that the National Gallery's ice rink is open. Hard to believe it's on, but they are and that's great news, especially for fans of the late-night sculpture garden rinks and cafe.
I strongly encourage you to get yourself and as many friends as you can legally buckle into a car/taxi to the Fort Dupont Ice Arena in SE.
Open the public three times a week (Fridays between noon and 2 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays between 2:30 and 4:30), this place is a secret. Adult admission is $4, for children/seniors its $3. And rental is $2. The facilities are out of this world, as is the view. Trust me.
Petworth:
The Raven? Ok, either it's changed a lot since I was last there, or I like your taste even more now.
Cool looking club - the ONLY club I've found in my neighborhood, Safari DC, up at Georgia and Upshur. Totally funky interior, great colors and lights, nice bar, freaky-weird wall treatments. (And great Kenyan food and good dance music.)
The Going Out Gurus: No, it hasn't changed in years. I (Fritz) just like the way it feels. It's like a slice of old Washington.
Annapolis MD:
Two things.
1. Ram's Head Food - I agree wholeheartedly - go somewhere else. There are tons of good restaurants in Annapolis, and Ram's head is only a step above Applebee's, in my mind, especially considering their great beer and music. Around Ram's head, Sean Donlan's has great Irish and American food, if you aren't in a diverse eating mood, but I would go to Tsunamai, just a few doors away from Ram's Head for great sushi and Asian Fusion food. They are expanding to add thai food and more tables, but it is a great experience right now.
2. Jaleo - I took some guy friends of mine there last weekend - same type of guys as the roommate - McDonald's is a food group, and if you can't pronounce it, you shouldn't eat it, and they LOVED Jaleo. Of course, at first they thought I said Spanish Topless restaurant, bt even after the initial disappointment (no topless), they loved the food.
The Going Out Gurus: More options to eating at the Rams Head. Thanks. I know the Rams Head has a captive audience, but they really could do something to improve the food there.
alexandria va:
Hello going out gurus! Happy Holidays to you...
2 questions for you: 1. A bunch of my friends and I are going to the Christmas Tree lighting downtown this evening. We thought we'd catch a bite to eat before hand. Old Ebbit Grill is booked until 9 pm. Do you know of any other places near by where we could relax and have dinner and drinks?
2. Heard of any Big Bands performing on NYE in DC area ?
Thanks a bunch,
High on Holiday Cheer.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, HoHC. This is Anne and I'll answer your second question first. Fritz recommends the Tom Cunningham Orchestra, playing at Glen Echo on New Year's. For restaurants near the Ellipse, the posh Bombay Club and Cafe Soleil are right on your way. Les Halles is sorta nearby too. However, many of the restaurants downtown cater to lobbyist-size wallets. You can search restaurants within a few miles radius of any place you're going to.
SOS in D.C.:
Dear Gurus,
I must say I ask y'all questions pretty regularly and have one today that I'll throw your way that may stump you. Here's the deal...I'm relocating to San Fran in the new year. Have looked online to find a San Fran newspaper like the Post that lists employment, entertainment etc.etc. online so that when I move I'm hooked up with all the happenings. Can you help me out. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Lucky you SOS, it's me Kate. Try the SFGate.
Hill, DC:
Reasonably priced Sunday brunches. Need brunch for 4. Near Metro. Preferably near the Warner, but it doesn't have to be. We walk a LOT. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Hill. A good place for you, if you like Indian food, is the Bombay Club where a great unlimited champagne buffet brunch is served for under $20 per person. It's not too far far from the Warner, and you do like to walk.
Arlington, VA:
Fritz,
I'm know you plan on going to Miami for the Orange Bowl. Do you know of anything that will be going on there that week?
The Going Out Gurus: Ummmmmmm ... I haven't decided if I'm going to Miami yet. As I'm not a member of the Terrapin Club (an athletic booster), I don't even know if I'm going to get tickets. But if I do, my time will be spent either on the beach or at the Ultimate Tailgate Party. (More info at http://www.orangebowl.org)
20011:
So, I've been rediscovering Adams Morgan. That is, I've been going back to a lot of palces I haven't been in years, and wondering why I had forgotten that they were there.
This weekend I'm thinking about a trip to the Little Fountain Cafe. Any of y'all been there recently? Any input?
The Going Out Gurus: I (Alexa) haven't been to the Little Fountain, so I'm afraid I can't speak to its quality. But let's ask the group. Who's been recently?
Wash DC:
What's good this Saturday for traipsing around the city? I intend to hit Metro with my walking shoes.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi WDC. Maura again. Happy to hear you've got those walking shoes on as there's lots to do. The Library of Congress just opened an exhibition on anthropologist Margaret Mead and they still have "World Treasures" and "The Floating World of Ukiyo-e." The National Gallery also has a great trio - Henry Moore, Renaissance Portraiture and A Century of Drawing. While on the Mall, check out the scaled-down tour of the universe in "Voyage: A Journey Through Our Solar System" and stop in for a last look at Game Face. Check out the National Christmas Tree, your favorite patriotic place or browse along 7th Street.
Dupont Circle:
Hi all! This is more of a protocol question when at a concert. If you really like an artist and want to get his/her autograph, how can you do it? It seems kind of creepy to stand in the back waiting for the artist to come out. Any ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Dupont, this is Joe and I think I've only asked for two autographs in my life (Dr. J and Fritz) so I'm not sure what the best approach is. But hanging out waiting doesn't seem creepy to me. How else are you going to do it? Any autograph hounds with good tips out there?
Silver Spring, Md.:
What should my boyfriend and I do on New Years Eve that's not a hotel party or a club party? Are B&B's where it's at this year? We are in our late 20's, and want to have fun! Some place that's within four hours driving distance.
The Going Out Gurus: Good question, SSM. This is Kate. According to trend observer Faith Popcorn, Americans are currently "cocooning" preferring to stay home, spending nights by the fire, etc. If this is indeed the case, and Ms. Popcorn is as usual terribly on target, B&Bs may well be the place to be. If it were up to me, I'd pick a spot with a great restaurant. See if the Ashby InEscapes."
charles town, WV:
i heard that the play, "beauty and the beast" would be coming to the city soon. any idea where or when?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, and yes. "Beauty and the Beast" is coming to the Kennedy Center Opera House and will run from April 24 through May 13. Tickets go on sale Feb. 11.
SW, DC:
Best place to have a quiet drink Sat night after parties are done...thinking hotel bar, to talk & catch up. Needs to be in the city. We will be dressed up. Crowd is 30-ish and are couples.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, SW. It depends what time you go, as most hotel bars close between 11 and midnight. Three options for you: the small, oaky bar at the Ritz-Carlton, the stylish bar at the Hotel George, or, if you're feeling adventurous, the bar at the Topaz Hotel. They have large booths and great drinks, but loud music. You may also want to consider the back bar at Angelo and Maxie's or the bar at Sam and Harry's.
Suburbs:
Hi Gurus, I love you all.
My boyfriend and I are going to the U.S. Navy Band holiday concert on Sunday the 16th. We don't go into D.C. very often so I'm not familiar with the area. Can we take the subway to Constitution Hall or is it too long a walk from the nearest station (we'd be on the orange line)? Also, any good (inexpensive!) places to eat afterwards?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Suburbs, this is Anne. It's warm, and love is in the air. By all means, you can walk to Constitution Hall from Farragut West station on the Orange Line. Take the 17th Street exit out of the station and when you get out, keep turning over your left shoulder so you're walking south on 17th Street, away from the park and toward the Washington Monument. Pass the Old Executive Office building on your left, then the Corcoran on your right, then you'll come to it on the right side of the street. It can't be more than a 20 minutes walk. For dining afterwards, you might try the Old Ebbit Grill ... most inexpensive places downtown are closed weekends. Or, cab to Georgetown for the Peacock Cafe or other restaurants in Georgetown, then walk across the Key Bridge to Rosslyn for an Orange Line Metroing home.
DC:
Last week someone mentioned a hip new bowling alley (couches, bar, etc) in Bethesda... is it open already? What's the name and were is it? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, DC. It's called Strike Bethesda, and I (Fritz) got a private tour yesterday. It's in the old Bowl America, but they spent $3 million to put in two bars, 34 lanes, state-of-the-art light displays, comfy settees at each lane, a VIP room and more. A far cry from most alleys around here. Strike's grand opening is Saturday, and you have to be 21 to enter after 6 p.m.
Looking for Fleas:
Hey, gurus. I'm looking for a fun way to do brunch on Sunday, then browse the flea markets as an activity with my boyfriend. We're really sick of Georgetown flea markets, and Georgetown brunches (too crowded)... got any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi LFF. This is Maura. Have you seen our flea market roundup? Eastern Market, Bethesda and Arlington have plenty of brunch options too: Market Lunch, Cafe Deluxe and Carlyle Grand for starters.
New Yorker in DC:
Hey, any good shows this weekend? I am really into alt-country, roots or not-to-pretentious indie rock. I saw Alejandro Escovedo played Monday, darn!
The Going Out Gurus: Hell NY in DC, this is Joe. You missed a great Alejandro show Monday at Iota in Arlington, but if you're looking for more alt-country/roots stuff you can head there Friday or Saturday night. The Graverobbers play on Friday and on Saturday a bunch of local alt-country-esque groups are playing a benefit show.
Petworth:
So, can you point me at info about the Mt Vernon Candle light tours? I wanna actually get to it this year!
The Going Out Gurus: Keywording searching is easy! You can do a search for Mount Vernon and quickly find the link here.
Petworth:
Movies- So, tix for Lord of the Rings are now on sale. But, it appears that it's not showing anywhere in DC??!!
I want to see it at the Uptown. But, I can't find their listings beyond 12/13, so I don't know if they're going to play it or not.
Ack! What should I do? Have faith that it will open at the Uptown? Or bite the bullet, and go to burbs? And, if so, where is it showing on a BIIIIIIIIG screen?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Petworth, this is Jen -- this answer also goes for the "Lord of the Rings" fan in Tenley who wrote in with a similar question.
I too am befuddled and perplexed by this situation. I tried calling the Uptown to find out if "LOTR" will show there, but the good people at the box office aren't picking up the phone.
My guess is that some theaters haven't determined their showtimes or started selling tickets yet, which is why we're seeing no DC cinemas on moviefone and other ticketing Web sites. Within the next week, I'm sure more theaters will be added to the list of ticket-sellers. (The movie has to be playing SOMEWHERE in D.C.)
In the meantime, I will try to get to the bottom of this Uptown situation. Check our movies page as well as next week's "Got Plans?" to see if this mystery has been solved.
In the mean time, remain calm. You will see the movie and all will be right with the world.
Adam, Arlington:
Hola, I am looking for some sunday brunch places to go either in the city or in VA, and I would prefer some sort of buffet, rather than a la carte. Besides Cafe Atlantico, Georgia Brown's, and Whitlows, can you all recommend somewhere else?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey Ho Adam, I'll refer you to an above response I gave to Hill about the Bombay Club's unlimited champagne buffet brunch. Also, this may be a good time to jump in with a few site-searching tips for you all. Our database is chocful of info just waiting to be discovered by you. Don't be shy, folks. Jump in to those search boxes and make them work for you. Here's an example of what comes back after I hunt for moderately priced Asian restaurants in Downtown. You see?
Adams Morgan:
Little Fountain Cafe - Very cozy and romantic.(It's on the basement level) The food is simple, chicken, pastas and salmon, but tasty, and not outrageously expensive. For desert, get the bread pudding if they have it on the menu. Enjoy!
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Adams.
Auto Fan:
Do you know if there is going to be an auto show this year at the Convention Center? We went last year, in January, and had a great time. I can't find any information about this year's show.
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, AF. The show will be Dec. 25-Jan. 1 at the DC Convention Center. We'll have more info soon.
Washington DC:
Love the chat, Gurus..
I checked out Dream at the kick off party on Tuesday night. It is a beautiful place, very impressive. It is definitely worth all the hype.
Any word on when Acropolis is going to open?
I've been driving past it on Connecticut for months now and have not heard anything about it.
The Going Out Gurus: We've been wondering the same thing, Washington. They were supposed to open this summer, but every time I (Fritz) go by and peer in, it's still under construction. Last phone call I made (in October) to get an update didn't get returned. After all the hype about the bar and the private elevators and VIP suites, though, I'd really like it to open.
Washington, DC:
Friend's B-day tomorrow night with all "the girls." Any suggestions on some good places to hit up? The b-day gal likes nice places (swank joints) but I thought I'd write in for some suggestions
The Going Out Gurus: And what a good friend you are. Kate here, and I'd suggest trying these on for size: why not order a bottle of prosecco (dry bubbly Italian, not champers but festive) at Spy Lounge on 18th, downtown try the Capital Grille or Sesto Senso -- where you can have your cake and eat it too. If you'd prefer not to break the bank, head to the new and handsome Bardeo, the attached-at-the-hip hip bar of Ardeo.
dupont:
I used free passed to see Harry Potter last weekend and it worked. I went to an AMC theater. Enjoy, it is pretty good!
The Going Out Gurus: If your pass is to AMC, Potter questioner, then perhaps your problems are solved.
Arlington, VA:
What do you think about Dr. Dremo's? I just moved to the area and I walk past it everyday.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Arlington. I (Fritz) like Dr. Dremo's, now that they've got Bardo beer back on tap. They have free pool at happy hour (until 7:30 p.m.), and even though a lot of the sticks are slightly curved, you can't beat that. They've started adding more entertainment, too. But it's nothing fancy - concrete walls, concrete floor - and often half-empty, so don't expect too much.
About Bingo:
I've heard a lot about bingo ever since Elliot in the Morning from DC101 took his crew there and talked about it on the show. Apparently it's not just for old folks anymore! Ooh, good Weekend section story -wink-
The Going Out Gurus: Definately not at Chaos.
Washington, D.C.:
Hi Guys!
Got any suggestions of places with great holiday decorations and neat shops to go Christmas shopping this weekend?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi D.C. Try Cameron and King Streets in Old Town for festive shopping. Have you seen Janet's sales and discoveries? She has some fresh ideas in Georgetown. For fun gifts this holiday, I (Maura) might scout out my favorite museum shops, Periwinkle or Apartment Zero.
bethesda:
I got as postcard in the mail for bowling at Strike Bethesda on Saturday. I am going to probably go with a few friends...anybody heard of this? What do I wear to a bowling alley? HELP - please!
The Going Out Gurus: Well, Bethesda, they do serve cocktails, so maybe you could press your bowling shirt first? No, really, wear whatever you would wear to go to, say, Chrome or Fairmont Lounge (RIP) or something similar. It's not a divey bowling alley.
Northern Virginia:
Hi Gurus -
My mom and I are planning to go to a play or musical together (a mother/daughter thing, which we haven't done for a while). Do you know of any good ones playing either the week before or the week after Christmas?
I'm thinking about "She Loves Me" at the Olney, what do you guys think of it?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Jen here. Olney generally does good productions, though I have not seen "She Loves Me." The Post's review was complimentary but not completely positive. Nelson Pressley felt it wasn't quite as effervescent as it should have been, something that may not deter you and your mom.
If you decide against "She Loves Me," you might try seeing "Cabaret." (playing the week after Christmas at the Warner) or "A Broadway Christmas Carol" at Round House, which is supposed to be great fun.
Fairfax, Virginia:
HELP! We plan to celebrate our daughter's 14th birthday by hosting a sleepover. We need an activity, in or near Fairfax, for the evening of December 15 for 14, 14 year old girls.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Fairfax, Anne here. I think the creators of Bop N' Bowl must have planned for you. But if that's not the teens' music scene, how about something else active like rock climbing or ice skating? I must confess, what I probably liked best at 14 was being turned loose in a shopping mall... Also, some Entertainment Guide folks caught a preview of "Ocean's 11," and we found it deluxe, relatively clean (it's rated PG-13) and, well, entertaining. There sure are a lot of cute boys in it...
SouthWest, DC:
You always have great info- this chat was a good idea!
Anyway, I may have a stumper- is there a Blues Club around here where people (couples) get up and dance to the live music? Or does this only go on in the South? (forgive my lack of knowledge, I'm from Wisconsin originally)It would be a treat for my boyfriend who loves blues music. Thanks for any info!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello SWDC, this is Joe. There really isn't a full-time blues club where you can dance in DC, but there are some options. Madam's Organ in Adams Morgan has live blues a couple of nights a week and there's a little bit of room there to dance. Occasionally the Birchmere will host a blues act in its bandstand so keep an eye out for those shows. The bandstand shows are out front and there's plenty of space. You can also try the New Vegas Lounge but there's not a lot of room for dancing there. Any other suggestions from readers?
Arlington, VA:
Hi. After looking at a lot of all-inclusive, black-tie options for New Years, some friends and I are thinking about doing something mellow this year. Could you recommend any bars in Northwest DC or Arlington or Alexandria, VA where a group of us could go out, grab a few beers, maybe a burger or wings, and just hang out? Minimal/no cover charges preferable. We go out a lot and know the area well, but aren't sure which places are open to the public that night. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. This is Fritz. This situation is still developing. Some bars, like Whitlow's on Wilson, are charging $50 to get in. Others, like the Big Hunt, say they're going to do something, but haven't announce what it is yet, but they had something like a $60 cover last year. I'm wondering what Galaxy Hut is going to do.
wdc:
happy thursday gurus! two quick
questions for ya:
i know this might be more appropriate for
the travel crew, but i was wondering if any
of you have heard anything regarding the
metro B30 bus that's supposedly running
from the greenbelt station to the bwi
airport. is it reliable? efficient? take
passengers right to the terminal? run on
the weekends? good alternative to
marc-less weekends? wmata.com
offered me some details, but i'm looking
for a first hand opinion/advice.
also, any word on a new restuarant called
toka cafe on 19th near m?
thanks gurus! you guys are the best!
The Going Out Gurus: We at the entertainment guide aren't as up on this new bus system as the travel folks are. So we suggest you save this question for Travel's Live Online discussion on Monday.
And we're chagrined to admit that you've stumped us on the restaurant question, too. Anyone else familiar with this new spot?
Arlington, VA:
I am the queen of going out, and I love to experience new things. How does one get a job reviewing nightlife and events as a career? Can I come work with you guys!
The Going Out Gurus: M'lady, this is Kate, and high five you! We're always looking for people just like us -- interested in where we live, trying new things, and exchanging ideas online. Most of us arrived at the E Guide with some journalistic experience and a deep passion for our subject area. Did you know Maura of Museums fame has a masters in Art History? As for nightlife, this gig fitz Fritz like an Italian suit. He's a great writer and DJ, passionate about swing and hungry for all new scenes, fashion, etc.
We're not hiring, but we'd love you to come and "work" with us every Thursday at 1 p.m. And I encourage you to test drive our newest feature: reader reviews. Did you know that you can add a review to any of our movie, restaurants, clubs, museum, concert pages instantly.
Now about that $20, Fritz . . . .
foggy bum:
Where are some good places to go out around GW?
The Going Out Gurus: Around GW? Here are some suggestions from a GW student. I (Fritz) like Marshall's, because it's not overrun with students. The Foggy Dogg is also a good after-work bar.
Fairfax,VA:
Hey Gurus...you rule the school....question: Holiday Party is at Hard Rock this Saturday, a group of us want to go out afterwards, anything (clubs/bars)close enough to walk/cab it to? Also, hwo can i sign up for guest list at some of these places? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Fairfax. I am guessing you'll be gussied up, so why not head to the bar at Cafe Atlantico or lounge at Murali. If you're looking for a more standard, low-key bar scene, there's always Cap City or Fado
Georgetown:
Okay, we were going to go to the Candlelight tours at Mt. Vernon on Saturday night. What is something unique we can do this weekend for four thirtysomethings that doesn't involve a noisy crowd? Thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, G-town, this is Anne. Have you browsed our calendar? Did you see that on the top right of the Entertainment Guide, you can click the day you want to go out, and you'll find a list of everything going on that day. For example, Saturday, Dec. 8 shows 259 things to choose from. How about a community Christmas concert? Our Holiday Guide has lots of seasonal ideas.
Rockville, MD:
Hi Gang,
Hope you'll be able to get to this today. I'm looking for a lounge-y type place to take my parents and other relatives (all in their 50's and 60's) over the holidays, just for drinks, talking, and relaxing. Any ideas in Montgomery County or DC?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: A few ideas, Rockville: the couches in front of the fireplace at the Tabard Inn, tasting wine at Bardeo, the bar/lounges at Oceanaire, West 24 or the Palm, grooving to Sinatra and Ella at Timpano ... anyone else have ideas?
Dupont:
Just saw them delivering the couches to Acropolis this afternoon...
(Royal blue velvet!)
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Dupont. sounds promising.
20008:
I loved the survey in the Entertainment section. I'd be interested to find out a profile of the type of person who used the E-Section. I was impressed with you all wanting to get a better idea of the people you are serving. Great idea!
The Going Out Gurus: Too kind too-oh-oh-oh-ate. It's me, Kate. Yup, we're bananas about yous guys but we want to know more about what you like/dislike about the site. Cheers to everyone lucky enough to get our pop-up survey, and thanks to the champs who've answered it.
Survey or no survey, we love feedback, and please don't be shy. You can always reach us with ideas on our Help Desk page.
The Going Out Gurus:
By the way, here's the link to the Regal Cinemas in Rockville -- we made a goof earlier.
Strike America?:
What is the best time to check out the swanky bowling alley?
The Going Out Gurus: Well, Strike Bethesda opens at 10 a.m., and they're charging $1.01 per game all day to raise money for the Special Olympics. If you want to avoid kids - and I (Fritz) hear there are birthday parties scheduled for Saturday already - go after 6. And they're open until 2 a.m.
The Going Out Gurus:
Well, that wraps things up for today. As usual, we couldn't get to everyone but do come back next week and we'll try to rock through as many questions as we can. Until then, feed the world and let them know it's Christmas.
Bethesda, MD:
Any backgroung on tonight's screening of Downtown 81 a Jean Michel Basquiat tribute at Mangos?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda, Kate again. Tricky for some, but we got this one covered thanks to our friend Abiola Akintola who used to work with us. Abiola is part of the collective sponsoring the screening. Not a great movie as much as it is a great period piece. The cast includes Deborah Harry, Fab Five Freddy (Yo! MTV Raps) and leading bands of the era including Kid Creole and the Coconuts, James White and the Blacks, DNA, Tuxedo Moon, the Plastics, and Walter Steding and the Dragon People.
The Going Out Gurus:
OK, seriously, now we're done.
