Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001; 1 p.m. EST

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Today's discussion ended at 2:30. The transcript is below.

The Going Out Gurus: Afternoon folks. Got plans? As always, we're here and we're ready. You know who we are: Kate, Anne and Jen (the know-alls), Fritz (the night), Joe (the music), Maura (the art), Rhome (the biz) and me, Alexa, (the eats), or as they say in Scotland, the scran. We've a lot of questions to get to and no time to lose. But remember please that we like to call this a discussion, a two-way thing: Chime in, pipe up, speak out. We aren't necessarily as wise as we make out. You, too, can be a guru.

Washington, D.C.: Hey gurus -

Some girlfriends and I have a meeting at 9th and G at 7 p.m. tonight -- would love to meet up early for a drink and appetizers somewhere. Recommendations? (other than Jaleo, please!) Thanky!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi D.C. Sounds like a fun evening. Why not check out Cafe Atlantico or Ten Penh. I (Maura) have heard mixed reviews about Andale, but you could stop in and see for yourself (then send us a reader review, of course).

Arlington, VA: My parents are coming in to town for the next week, and I'm looking for some good restaurant ideas. They are pretty much in to meat and potatoes. I can't really afford The Palm or anything like that, and the Silver Diner, while within my budget, has served me one too many bad meals. Any ideas for simple, average-priced dining?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington, Alexa here. Why don't you take those parents of yours to the Colorado Kitchen where they serve meat and potatoes of the very best kind. It's new and already has quite a following with entree prices hovering around the $15 mark. Note, however, that they don't serve alcohol.

Annapolis: Any scoop in the antiques show in Alexandria? High- or Low-end? Big or small? Bargain meter?

The Going Out Gurus: Antiques + Alexandria = expensive.

Washington, D.C.: Hi -- you guys are great! Here is my question: I'm going to see "Rent" this Thursday in D.C. and am wondering what people wear to Warner Theater? I know one of you said you had been a few times before. Is it like the Kennedy Center? Ties and dresses, or business casual attire? I'd prefer to look nice but don't want to overdo it. Thanks for your help!

The Going Out Gurus: Kate here. The Warner Theater is a grand old dame: all red velvet and gold, but through Sunday it's "no day like today" rock musical about drag queens, addicts, life's losers and love's lovers. Washington, wear what ever you want. The "Rent" machine is remarkable for attracting an audience that dresses and lives, to a centain extent, like its cast of characters, and vice versa. The kids who score the seats in the front rows will be dressed like their favorite characters/themselves. Have a blast.

Heavenly on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: O Wise Gurus, I come to you for assistance.

I live in Adams Morgan, but a "prospect" lives out in the wiles of Herndon. I'd like to meet up with him for coffee or something. Any suggestions for a meeting place between the two areas (I'm thinking Arlington?). Preference to Metro accessibility, if possible.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Heavenly. Arlington sounds like a good bet to me. Metro-accessible coffee can be found at Atomic Grounds (just up the hill from the Rosslyn stop), which has some nice cushy chairs to sit in, or the recently remodeled Xando, just outside the Courthouse Metro. Xando a good bet because there are other things to imbibe besides coffee and, if things go well, you can head to one of the nearby bars (Dr. Dremo's or Four Corners) for non-caffeinated drinks.

Arlington: Hey other-Arlington -- Rhodeside Grill has lots of great "real" food. Not to ridiculous $-wise.

The Going Out Gurus: Goody. Thanks Arlington for piping up.

reston, va: Hi-

Family is coming to DC for Thanksgiving and want to go to the National Gallery on the Friday after T-Day...can you recommend a casual but parent-nice restaurant for light lunch, preferably only a few blocks away?

Thanks so much

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Reston. I (Maura) just saw the NGA's new "Century of Drawing" show this week and it was a stunner. Afterwards I headed straight out the 7th street exit up to one of my faves - Teaism. You might also try Jaleo or Austin Grill. All an easy walk. Enjoy.

Peace Valley, W.Va.: Hello all,
I lived all my life in Arlington/Falls Church. A few months ago I move to West Virginia. Happy to report it's been great. My question is this: long ago I use to frequent the Galaxy Hut in Arlignton. It was a nice little (very little) place where me and a bunch of people my age (25) could hang out and mingle. I heard a nasty rumor though that the old timers (30/40 somthingers) have taken over. It was sad to see Larry leave there but could this be true? Does the Galaxy Hut suck now (no offense meant to anyone in that age group, it only sucks if your 25 looking for 25 year olds)

The Going Out Gurus: No, PVWV, Galaxy Hut doesn't suck. This is Fritz, and I've been in for a few beers recently and the crowd seemed pretty split between the old timers and the indie-rockers. I did notice more old timers than I used to.

I do know some people who stopped going after Lary left, because, well, it's not the same without him. I think Ben is a cool bartender, though.

Washington, D.C.: I've heard that Elton John and Billy Joel are coming in concert. Do you have any info on it? I heard tickets go on sale this Saturday. Is that true?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello WDC, this is Joe and yes, Elton and Billy are coming to MCI on Jan. 13. Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. and are price at $48 - $178.

Arlington, VA: I have a first date this coming Saturday. It is a lunch date in Herndon... any suggestions on resturants... something casual with outdoor scenery and good views?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington, Alexa here. I think this one is best thrown out to the group since I'm a bit of a dumb-dumb when it comes to Herndon. Anyone?

For Heavenly on Capital Hill: Xando is a great idea for a casual date. There are couches and comfy chairs to sit on & a cool atmosphere. I definitely recommend getting the 'Smores' dessert w/ some coffee or other hot drink. They serve marshmellows that you toast yourself on sticks at the table...with the standard hershey bars & graham crackers. Such a fun thing to do! There's one right at the Courthouse metro and one at Ballston as well.

The Going Out Gurus: See, I told you. Gurus all.

DC: Fyi - the Xando at Courthouse is now called Cosi -- same place, different name

The Going Out Gurus: Ok, smartypants.

Farragut: Hey Wonderful Amazing Gurus, I'm in the mood for photography. Good, interesting photography that leaves you with something to talk about. Can you guys suggest any exhibitions going on this weekend that I may enjoy?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Farragut. I (Maura) think there's plenty to choose from. There are timely shows like "America Under Attack" at the Newseum, "Twin Towers Remembered" at the Building Museum and "Images of Afghanistan" at National Geographic. Other possibilities: Hiroshi Osaka at the Kathleen Ewing Gallery, Black and White and Color at Robert Brown and Cherokee Nation at Arts and Industries. That should keep you busy.

re herndon: go to lake anne and eat at il cigno or jasmine cafe. walk around the lake with a cup of coffee and browse the used book store.

The Going Out Gurus: I knew you'd come through for me.

Friends in Low places, DC: I am looking for a bar that has both country-line dancing AND those electrical bull thingies. Any ideas...? The further away from the Mason Dixon line the better...
Thanks...

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, FiLP. This is Fritz ... we tried desparately to find a mechanical bull for a story, but couldn't locate one. Here's a piece on country dancing, though - and since Cactus Cantina got rid of their live bull riding event, maybe they'll get a mechanical bull.

Hogwarts, England: Alright, I'll admit it -- I want to see Harry Potter this weekend -- however, as a childless adult I'd rather see it with as mature an audience as possible. Any ideas on how I could make this happen? If I wait a week or two and go to the late showing (I didn't see a midnite showing anywhere, but there was a 10:30) will my chances improve?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Hogwarts, how's Dumbledore doing? This is Jen, and I think you're quite right to pursue a late-night show if you want to see the film with a "mature" audience. You might even be able to get tickets for this weekend if you purchase them in advance today, assuming you're not trying to see it at the Uptown. Take a look at this feature about advance ticket sales -- it tells you which theaters are showing "Potter" and how you can buy tix. If your heart is set on the Uptown, I suggest you buy tickets for next weekend as soon as possible. Looks like there are tickets available for all shows at the Uptown starting Wednesday.

Arlington, Va.: Hi gurus --
Trying to get an early start on New Year's Eve plans, but having a hard time finding information. Are you all going to be putting out a list of events? That would be really awesome. Last year we went to the Capital Hilton party (I think think PartyDC put it on), which was fun. Gonzo's Nose was there. Any idea if they'll be playing there again? And when do tickets usually go on sale for these events? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington and Alexandria, and any other New Year's questioners out there. This is Anne. Info on New Year's parties is coming soon -- places like Platinum and Lulu's are only saying that there will be a party. Tickets will go on sale for most events in about two weeks, and we sure will have a list of events and all the info for you as soon as it's available. Fritz says that Gonzo's Nose will be performing again at the Capital Hilton, and that party is put on by hiballevents.com (their site doesn't have any info yet). We also know that D.C. Young Professionals is having a gala at the Four Seasons. You can get tickets now through their site -- the price is currently $129. Now, Alexandria, we don't recall any fireworks on the mall last year... sure you aren't thinking of the 1999-2000 changeover? But, other places around the area will have alcohol-free First Night events, where they often have fireworks.

Arlington, Va.: I really want to see the Leonid meteor shower this weekend. Do you have any ideas for a safe, legal place to watch, away from the light pollution of the D.C. metro area? I want to drive out to "the country," but I don't have a clue where a good, dark place would be where I could park and feel safe at 4 a.m. Are any county/state parks hosting meteor-watching events?

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, this is Kate. I'd recommend you pack a picnic, get a carful of friends together and drive out on I-66. I watched the Leonids from a field in Sky Meadows Park in Delaplane, VA in 1998. We saw at least one good smokey streak a minute without a telescope or binoculars. What's most important is picking a field with few trees located away from the bright lights of a city or highway, preferably on a hill. A scenic overlook on Skyline Drive would be good, and you could over night it in Culpepper or Leesburg (better diners in Leesburg, no?). Call the Einstein Planetarium at the Air and Space Museum (202/357-2700), the Rock Creek Nature Center (202/426-6829) or the planetarium at Montgomery College (301/650-1463). Perhaps one of their experts can help to recommend a spot, or better yet, a group trip you can join. I'm planning on going up to the roof of my Adams Morgan apartment to see whatever I can.

re coffe in arlington: try the Common Ground right off north fairfax, on wilson. Its a few blocks due west on wilson from clarendon metro

The Going Out Gurus: Yes indeedy.

Instead of Xando...: or Atomic Grounds (which, I think, closes fairly early), head up to Clarendon to my second-favorite coffee shop in the world (the first being Stauf's in Columbus, Ohio) to Common Grounds. A block or so north from the Clarendon metro, it's a restored big old house with several rooms, one with games and puzzles, and a very friendly atmosphere, as well as some sandwiches and pastries. It's a very community-oriented place - "where everybody knows your name" kinda deal. Highly recommended.

The Going Out Gurus: More grounds for The Grounds.

for Lunch date in Herndon: Lakeside Inn in Reston is good and close to Herndon. The back room overlooks a lake and trees (though there are townhouses too...) They serve lunch and dinner.

The Going Out Gurus: Another nice suggestion. Thank you.

Washington, D.C.: Hi there -- do you guys know anything about a wine tasting event at the Spanish Embassy tonight? I heard about it in passing but am looking for a few details. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi D.C. Maura again. I don't have too many details except that it starts at 6:30 is open to the public and free. Not bad. If you need more information, call 202/452-0100.

Foggy Bottom: Any news on sold out showings of Harry Potter? A group of friends want to go tomorrow at AMC Hoffman Center or Hoyts Potomac Yard and we don't want to bother if it's already sold out in advance. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Foggy Bottom. Looks like none of the shows at Potomac Yard have sold out, from what I (Jen) can tell by checking online movie ticket sites. Keep in mind that "Harry Potter" is showing on a ton of screens, so, with the notable exception of the Uptown, it may not be as difficult to get tickets as you think. That said, I encourage you to buy in advance today, just so you don't have to worry about not getting tickets or the hassle of standing in line. Again, glance at this feature on advance tickets and try to get yourselves some. Enjoy the film.

Re: Herndon: Jimmy's Old Town Tavern in Herndon...EXCELLENT Buff wings, on a corner, big windows! Nice place to hang out on a weekend.

The Going Out Gurus: And more on Herndon.

photography:: there's also the exhibit at the corcoran - of
national parks (?); and the newseum's
attack on america exhibit is really
powerful, moving and well done. definitely
something worthwhiled.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Photo. I forgot about "In Response to Place" at the Corcoran -- one of the best shows around these days. It shouldn't be missed.

wdc: gurus? can i give you my weekend
update? last friday, had dinner at utopia,
which was fabulous. both food and
service. could not have asked for a better
dining experience. and saturday, a friend
and i went to red saige. where the food
was also fabulous. and except for our
waitress, the service was top notch as
well. just wanted to throw in my two cents
and say thanks for the great
recommendations. good eats all around.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we like to be kept informed, wdc.

re re re herndon: Jimmy's great for the Hockey games (Go Caps, We Still Support You) and there is the Ice House Cafe across the street-Jazz at night. Kissy Kissy Smoochy Smoochy

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Kissy Kissy Smoochy Smoochy.

Surrounded by Circles in DC: Just one thought for the poster whose parents want to visit the National Gallery the day after Thanksgiving-- last year, my parents and I went to the Natural History museum the day after Turkey Day and it was MADNESS! Crowded like you would not believe. The National Gallery may be different, and I have heard that museum attendance has been down since Sept. 11, so maybe it'll work out okay, but be prepared.

The Going Out Gurus: SBC, you're right. The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest museum day of the year, so do expect crowds. My (Maura's) guess: Air and Space and Natural History will be the nuttiest, but the crowds - let's hope for attendance sake - will be everywhere.

Cathlamet, WA: OK, I know I'm not in DC but I am just wondering, are Harry Potter tickets even more difficult to obtain there as it is in this tiny burg (population 700)?

The Going Out Gurus: We love hearing from people in the other Washington. This is Jen again, and as I mentioned to a previous "Potter" inquirer, it may not be as hard to get tickets as you think. The film is opening on something like 4,000 screens nationwide, which is pretty staggering. Actually, I think people who live in major metropolitan areas like D.C. have an even greater chance of getting tickets because there are more theaters here and therefore more screens for Mr. Potter to grace. If you haven't gotten tickets yet, buck up. The frenzy will die down soon enough and you'll be able to get in without a problem.

Washington, D.C.: Hey everyone,

OK, so what was up with Bistroit du Coin last night? The line was 2+ blocks long, and at one point the owner (I think) came out to tell us that "90 percent of you won't get in tonight." I went last year and they packed us in shoulder to shoulder, but from my second-class view through the window last night, they were leaving plenty of personal space between customers.

At 11:30 maybe only 10 people were in front of me at the door, but the line was not moving, even though plenty of people (including Mayor Williams) were leaving. By midnight I gave up.

What's the solution for beaujolais nouveau next year -- don't tell anyone? B-d-C is far from being my favorite place (ugh), but it was a fun time last year and I was looking forward to doing it again. Too bad.

The Going Out Gurus: Bon jour, Washington. This is Fritz. I was at Bistrot du Coin last night, and I'll agree it wasn't as cramped as last year's event. But you know what? I liked it that way.

Part of this has to do with fire codes - BdC has a low maximum occupancy because it has a restaurant license, not a nightclub license (I'm paraphrasing here). And several clubs, including the Black Cat, got visits from Fire Marshalls last weekend. At least one was shut down for being overcrowded. Take that atmosphere, add the mayor and his security detail, and you can understand why they were so strict.

I'm glad, though, that Michel went out to tell people that they wouldn't get in. Would you rather have waited without anyone telling you anything? In the Weekend story, I tried to tell people to get there early - I met friends at the bar around 9:30 and people were getting in without problems. Some were even getting tables. But if you turned up after, say, 10:30, it was much harder to get in - although some people obviously did.

I know at least one friend of mine went to Les Halles for the Beaujolais last night - she said it was low-key and not very happening, but at least she got wine.

To repeat: the solution is just to arrive early. That goes for All-Star Weekend, St. Patrick's Day or Beaujolais Nouveau.

Wash DC: What's the most romantic DC date (nighttime) that you guys have been on?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi DC, this is Joe and for romance it's hard to beat a six pack and a bucket of extra spicy chicken from Popeyes. But maybe that's just me. Others here are mentioning places like Neyla in Georgetown and Obelisk on P Street. But why don't we open it up to all our readers. I'm sure we'll get some interesting answers. Maybe even a few we can post.

Hey kiss kiss: ICE HOUSE is closed on weekends during the day.

The Going Out Gurus: Oops.

RE: Peace Valley, W.Va: 30/40s old timers? In this age bracket you've only lived half your lifeWe should remind Peace Valley that age is only how you feel, not a number. Let's see how Peace Valley feels on his/her 30th birthday.

The Going Out Gurus: Things are heating up in the valley.

Northeast DC: Any skinny on RENT? Is it aging/traveling well? What are the acoustics at the Warner Theater like?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Northeast, 'tis Jen. I have not heard from anyone who's seen this particular production of "Rent," so I can't comment on it specifically. But as a huge fan of the show, my opinion is that it will always travel well because its themes are so universal. (Also, the music rules.) The show is so strong that the cast would have to be half asleep to screw it up, so if you're seeing it this weekend, you can most likely look forward to a great time.
As for acoustics, I've seen a few shows at the Warner (including a Little Feat concert back in 1989 right before they closed it for renovations) and I've never had a complaint about the sound.

romantic date: this lead to marriage, so be careful!

afternoon coffee at dupont's xando, followed by movie at the odeon across the street (tear jerking oscar winner!), then early supper at pizza paradisio, followed by drinks at the big hunt. it was a 9-hour dupont date...the first of many, many more -sigh-

The Going Out Gurus: Here comes the romance...

DC dates: Nothing really beats a stroll around the reflecting pool and tidal basin. The monuments lit up at night are very romantic! Especially at cherry blossom time.

The Going Out Gurus: And more...

Arlington, VA: Dear Gurus:

A couple of girlfriends and I would like to head out tonight and do some dancing. Being slightly over the ripe old age of 30, we are children of the 80s, and would like to dance the night away to classic 80s music. Does Heaven and Hell still have a good 80s night on Thursdays?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington, this is Jen, your cohort in admiration of the '80s. It's been a while since I've been to Club Heaven, but I get the '80s Night e-mail every week and things seem to be going stronger than ever. I've never gone to '80s Night and not had a good time, so I'm sure you and your friends will love it. If only I weren't too lazy to drive to Adams Morgan, I would be there, too...

Barely Outside the Beltway: My husband's parents and brother are coming from England to spend Christmas with us (12/18 - 1/7). All of them have been to DC before, and I'd like to make this a really "American" Christmas. Any suggestions of events or places we shouldn't miss? Does anyone know if the White House will be doing candle-light tours this year? Thanks for any help!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, BOTB, Anne here. We've got a holiday guide that will point you toward Christmas highlights, and you might also want to combine those ideas with another feature on Washington's patriotic places -- perhaps there will be a few landmarks your fam hasn't visited yet. Regular tours of the White House have been suspended since mid-September. Don't believe the White House Web site that currently says they will have the candlelight tours. I just spoke with their press office contact on this, and they have yet to make a decision. Basically, I wouldn't count on the White House being open for tours, but if they are, we'll be sure to let you know. What I can recommend, however, is touring another presidential home. Candlelight tours of Mount Vernon are $12, and you get cookies, hot cider, a hot fire, carol singing, plus a chance to look at the mansion's third floor, which usually isn't open to the public. You could go see "A Christmas Carol" at Ford's Theatre, but I think what would be truly American is joining a sing-along or attending a concert performed by a local chorus. In an idea inspired by David Sedaris's show last week, I think what distinguishes Americans are the stories they tell their kids about Santa.

Springfield, VA: Well, this just-turned-40, old timer has almost raised two teenage daughters and is busily reading "Got Plans" every chance I get so I will be ready to go join the "youngsters" when my nest is empty.

At 40, I am wiser, richer and more patient than I ever could have imagined as a 20-something.

Just like Kathy Bates said, "I am older and have more insurance!"

The Going Out Gurus: A-men Sister.

Capitol HIll: I hear that Alicia Keys is coming to town soon. Can any of you shed some light on this? BTW, you guys are great!!

The Going Out Gurus: Rhome counsels that you'll be scrapping with the teeny-boppers to get a glimpse of Ms. Alicia at Nation on Nov. 30. Two different ads say that doors open at either 5pm or 6pm. It's also noted that you must listen to WPGC 95.5 to get a ticket, as this all-ages event is their "Jingle Jam". Don't forget your non-parishable food item either.

WDC: Christmas is coming, and I'm getting excited. One thing I was able to do in college that I've never been able to find since is to attend a singalong for Christmas carols--not just the Hallelujah, but all kinds of different carols. Any ideas or recommendations?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm glad you're excited WDC. I am too, though I'm not much of a singer. Lets see what the boys and girls at home have to say. They seem to be chatty this afternoon. Sing-a-longs anyone?

20002: My dad is visiting my sister and I this weekend. She gets special time with him on Saturday, I do on Sunday, and we're all meeting up around 6 for dinner and Macbeth Saturday night. My dad is a surviving hippie who just turned 65 and he doesn't have much money. Can you recommend an activity near CUA for Saturday (something outside maybe?) and Sunday (we've enjoyed the National Gallery, Rathko esp., and the Freer/Sackler in the past)? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi 20002. If you have access to car, the National Arboretum is just a short drive from CUA and a great way to spend an afternoon. As for Sunday, your dad might like the haunting works of sculptor Juan Munoz at the Hirshhorn. Enjoy the play and your weekend.

Gaithersburg MD: This may be a little out of the local area, but here goes--

After being unable to get a ticket for Ben Folds at 9:30 earlier in the fall, I did manage to get one for his show at Bohager's in Baltimore the day after Thanksgiving.

What's the place like?

How's parking?

What else is there in Fells Point to do? The doors open at 6--I was thinking of going up htere earlier and looking around.

Thaks!

You guys are great.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Gaithersburg. This is Fritz. Bohagers is okay ... not my ideal place to see a show, but they have decent enough sound and a more intimate atmosphere than the 9:30. It's very popular with the college-party crowd. There's a big parking lot next to the club. Use it.

As far as other places to visit in Fells Point, I like Max's on Broadway - they have something like 65 beers on draft, with a good mix of microbrews. And some of the antique and "junque" shops are worth a visit.

Any other readers have Fells Point ideas?

Lunch in Herndon...: If you really want to get creative (and since you will be in a car, I assume, since you can't really get to Herndon any other way), I suggest packing a picnic lunch and heading to Great Falls Park with a blanket. Can't beat it, especially with the weather the way it is!

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, this weather has to be good for something.

Local Music Lover: Hey all you GGU's, I'm a local music fan & was wondering if any of you guys heard of any recent local bands that are worth getting off my lazy butt to check out.

Also, do you guys know what happened to the local band Vanity Champ? They use to play around the area constantly & I haven't seen them listed anywhere in a while. Did they break up or move?

Thanks,
LML

The Going Out Gurus: Hey LML, this is Joe and I know it's not a good thing to say, but I'm a little down on the local music scene lately. There are some exceptions though. Canyon is a really good band and you can see them tonight at the Black Cat opening for the Pernice Brothers. I like Ted Leo as well. And the Dismemberment Plan. And Storm the Unpredictable. And of course old reliables like Fugazi and the Grandsons. And our colleague Eric Brace's band Last Train Home. I've been meaning to check out the Apes but haven't yet though I hear good things about them. But I wish there were a few more young bands that I thought were exciting. If anyone has recommendations, we'd love to hear them.

Washington, D.C.: You mentioned Topaz as a good place to go in D.C. after happy hour, but before the night's actual events. I was just wondering if you give some details about Topaz. My friends and I always meet up for happy hour and then just sit around or grab some dinner afterwards before we go out, so we are interested what the scene at Topaz is like.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. This is Fritz - you can read my take on Topaz here. I like it as a place to grab a cocktail before the evening's main event, although too many Absente cocktails might turn Topaz into the night's main event ...

U Street: re: Fells Point

A big slab of greasy diner grub at Jimmys always takes the edge off the evening. And right around the corner from Max's is a divey little place with a white plastic sign that says "Bar." Never did figure out the name of the joint. Cozey, with a pool table, and they've got 75 cent National Bohemians.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, U Street.

Indie Rock Land: Hey,
I never liked Vanity Champ, but one good local band is Catcus Patch - young, energetic, good sound. They play around a lot in Arlington and DC.

The Going Out Gurus: Ok, thanks for the tip.

re icehouse: Naw, see here. You take your date to the Icehouse to close the evening, listen to jazz with a cappucino. Then you will get the smooch and kissy for being suave in herndon.

The Going Out Gurus: Right on!

Alexandria, VA: As I submitted earlier, I love the local rock band Otis Finch, tomorrow at the Grog and Tankard. Check them out if you want some new blood in the local scene!

The Going Out Gurus: alrighty. anyone else want to weigh in?

Fairfax, Va.: Hi gurus! Love you guys! Questions: About the Clarendon Ballroom throwdown, what's the haps? Also, this weekend, anything romantic going on Saturday night? THANKS!

The Going Out Gurus: Regarding the Clarendon Ballroom, take a look at this feature for the skinny. As far as romantic things to do this Saturday, I (Jen) suggest you take advantage of Restaurant Week by having a wonderful meal at any of the participating restaurants. An ecellent dinner is always romantic in my book. However, if you don't feel like trekking from Fairfax to D.C. and want to get into the holiday spirit, consider a drive through the Miracle of Lights, a holiday light show at Bulls Run Park that kicks off tomorrow night. Put some Nick Drake on your car stereo and you can pretend you're in that Volkswagen commercial.

Re;rent: I saw Rent On Tuesday and it was absolutely amazing!!The only thing was that the music might've been too loud but i was also in the center row J....the cast was great and on top of everything...for opening night they were phenomenal!!

The Going Out Gurus: And there you have it, Rent-o-philes. Thanks for the tip.

re: Galaxy Hut: Ann is the best bartender.

The Going Out Gurus: I (Fritz) like Ann. I think she's a good bartender ... but Ben is usually working when I make it in these days. And he has an encyclopedic knowledge of indie bands.

Local Music Lover: So Joe, ever even heard of Vanity Champ, there were/are one of my favorites... I recommend you check em out if they come back around.

-LML

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, heard of them, but no haven't seen them. If they play in town, I'll go see them.

DC: Local hospitals are a great place to go sing carols and spread some cheer. I would call the volunteer coordinator at a local hospital and ask them.

The Going Out Gurus: That's a jolly nice idea, DC.

DC: re: Fells Point

I recently moved from DC up to Baltimore and now back to DC (very thankful to be back home). I was never a big fan of the Fells Point "scene," but would agree that Max's is the best spot to head for a quick brew. My only other suggestion is to stop in the Soundgarden record store - a GREAT place to listen to and buy music. It's the only place I miss from my brief time in Baltimore - if only DC had as good a record store!

The Going Out Gurus: More Fells Point tips ...

Local Bands: Hi gurus....you guys rock!!!

Just to let you know a local band called espreston will be at the Grog and Tankard this evening if anyone is interested. I'm a huge fan!

The Going Out Gurus: more at the G and T.

The Going Out Gurus: This is Joe and local music fans should be sure to check out the washingtonpost.com mp3 site. Lots of local bands and artists playing many different kinds of music.

Jon in DC: The family is coming to DC for Thanksgiving and it is hard to please 8 people all the time. Can you suggest some family activites or day trips that will entertain the group (age 24-60)? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Jon, sounds like you'll have your hands full, but why don't you consider some of these crowd pleasers: The F.D.R. Memorial -- most visitors to Washington have seen the monuments, but few have seen the newest jewel. Maura and Ben composed a red hot and blue list of their top 10 patriotic places and I'd recommend checking it out as a blue-print for a greatest hits tour.

Maura's monthly round-up of November's best museum shows is a goodie. Her highlights include the ever-lovely "Impressionist Still Life" show at the Phillips. It's hard not to be charmed by these little paintings in this intimate setting. Advance tickets are required. Anne recommends a trip to the Corcoran and taking advantage of the "family rate" admission. And the Smithsonian's admission is always hard to beat. The Zoo is always a great place to walk and it will be crowded, but the baby elephant is due any day . . . Could be extra-memorable.

U Street NW: Best show of the week: Sterolab/Quasi at 9:30 Club on Tues.
My question: My sister is visiting from NYC. She is a real fashionista. She actually wears the stuff you see on the runways, Prada, D & G etc. What restaurant and club/lounge in NW DC should we go to where she'll feel at home??

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, U Street - This is Fritz. I caught Stereolab last time they were in town and it was excellent ... depending on the music you like, I think you could take her to MCCXXIII, Chi-Cha, the 18th Street Lounge, Modern, Ozio, Republic Gardens or 2:k:9. Good luck ...

Downtown DC: Went to Modern last weekend. Great place, horrible music.

I got nothin against hip hop, but why play bad hip hop?

When i asked the DJ to play some prince, or funk, or anything else, he said "my boss told me to play hip hop and ill get in trouble if i play prince."

Ugh. i'll give it one more chance.

The Going Out Gurus: Bad hip-hop is a plague, DDC. This is Fritz, and last time I was at Modern I heard a few Prince tunes. What night were you there?

RE: Herndon: Reston Town Center - lots of restaurants and shops - Nice to walk around. Also, Ice House Cafe right in Herndon

The Going Out Gurus: Herndon again.

Jandy; Falls Church:
I was messing around on mp3.washingtonpost.com, (a shameless plug, by which I hope to get my question answered) and was disturbed to find that Alt, Punk & Ska are listed as the same genre, as if hoping for a two-tone band with a horn section I might be just as happy to find a Johnny Rotten wanna-be. What is the correct method for finding a band with a horn section? Are you the right people to ask?

J

PS regarding the antiques question; we found ourselves in Frederick recently with a friend who takes a disturbing interest in leather-top tables. She said the prices were pretty good and taught us the aggressive use of the phrase, “is this your best price on this item?” What I learned is that you should avoid places that advertise “100’s of dealers.” The cooler stuff is in the single dealer niche stores. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen hundreds of goat carts piled to the ceiling PPS We were at Les Halles last night, where everyone got in and everyone got wine and everyone shook the mayors hand after he had his taste and split for the door. I don’t know if it was “happening,” but it was very loud in a euro/disco kind of way. Romance? Hand in hand at the Lincoln or the tidal basin on a crisp moon-lite night (or the six-pack and wings thing)

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Jandy, this is Rhome, 1/2 of the washingtonpost.com/mp3 custodial team and a member of a local band that isn't wack (for the other person that asked). When we launched, we haggled mightily behind closed doors about which genres to include, omit, or just group together for convenience. Convenience based on what? We had to guess at how many bands we thought would populate each genre and what would be the optimal length of the genre list (too long = annoying and nitpicky, too short = people feel slighted). As we've grown we've made some changes (The Roots Rock folks wanted to be by themselves), additions (Spoken Word) and set aside some for consideration (Goth/Industrial/Metal folks want their own genre). So Jandy, I can assure you that your input is helpful, but I can't make the call right now.

Piggybacking on Joe's local band list, here's another short list of folks to check for: Miscellaneous Flux, Raheem Davaughn/Urban Ave 31, Opus Akoben, K'Alyn, Great Mutant Skywheel, Michael Harris, Fertile Ground, and any group with Will Smith or Walt Cosby playing.

Beer Me : Is there such a thing as Novemberfest? I loved going to the Octoberfests this past month, but would love to visit another. I was a big fan of tasting all sorts of beers from all over the area. I've went to Cap City Brewery Fest in Shirlington, as well as Dominion Brewing Co in Reston.

Any more this year?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, BM. It's Fritz. I haven't heard of any big area beer events in the near future. If I do, though, you'll find them on our site.

In the meantime, if you like trying new beers, get yourself on the Brickskeller's e-mail list. They've had a few really good tastings in the last few weeks, including two nights of stout tasting this week that I wish I could have attended. Check out http://thebrickskeller.com for more information on tastings, past and future.

DDC re: Modern: I was there last friday. I will go again on saturday to see if its a different DJ. like i said, excellent atmosphere anyway--far better than most similar clubs around town.

bad hip hop is almost worse than bad house i think.

thanks

The Going Out Gurus: I agree, DDC. Thanks for writing.

re: Local Music: Joe, you didn't answer the Vanity Champ part of the question from the music lover. And, frankly, isn't it a conflict of interest to keep flogging Eric Brace's band? There's a lot more going on musically in this town. Just venture past Iota.

The Going Out Gurus: It is a conflict of interest for me to keep flogging Brace's band, but he pays me so much to do it that I manage to ignore the ethical conflict. The truth is I really like them and judging by the turnout at their shows, so do a lot of other people. And yes, there's music going on all over town, so get to places like Metro, Black Cat, Velvet Lounge, Nation, Galaxy Hut, 9:30, Birchmere, Blues Alley and on and on. Here's a list of the more reliably good music venues.

Something New in Washington, DC: Gurus, my girlfriends and I want to go to a Thanksgiving dinner this Friday before we all get swept into our significant other/family plans. We thought we would try one of the price fixe menus--take advantage of Restaurant week. Only problem-- six people with six different palates. Any suggestions for somewhere interesting that will have options for vegetarians, pasta lovers, and steak eaters?

The Going Out Gurus: This goes out to Somewhere USA and to Arlington, for I'm combining all Restaurant Week questions into one, here goes. To drink wine in a classy place (not a Restaurant Week location) relatively near 1789, Fritz and I (Anne) think Bistro Francais or Tahoga. For a steak/pasta that can also please vegetarians, I think of Tosca, but you might also peruse our list of steakhouses and see which ones match up against the official restaurant week list (wait for the intro to conclude and click on Restaurant Week). And now, to the person who likes good bread, no seafood, near Metro, well, I went to Georgia Brown's this week and loved their cornbread and biscuits. It's across the street from McPherson Square Metro.

Washington, D.C.: Howdy and HELP!
My 21-year-old niece and her boyfriend are coming to town Saturday to see "Rent" (Seen the current production yet?) and I need some suggestions as to where to send the two to play afterwords. They're your typical love to party types into all the music that 21 year olds tend to be into. Thanks much!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington - there are waaaaay too many options for them. Try sending them to Georgetown or Adams Morgan and see what happens. I (Fritz) am sure they'll find exactly what they're looking for.

Jon in DC: Here's my most Romantic Night in DC -

Dinner at Nora's (in my opinion, the best restaurant in DC along with I Ricci, Obelisk and Ten Penh)

Head Downtown for a Horse & Carriage ride around the Mall.

Then retreat to Two Continents for dessert (atop the Hotel Washington which has closed fo the season). Xando for S'mores if the weather is right.

Then from there it is up to you.....

The Going Out Gurus: good one

re: romantic date: sushi dinner, movie, zebra lunge then on to the cathedral to do some star gazing.
also picnic on skyline drive. renting a movie, cooking a great meal (or having dean and deluca do it for you) good wine, candles and well you can come up with the rest.

The Going Out Gurus: the ideas keep pouring in.

What to do Marylyand, Virginia, D.C.: Couple o' questions:
Do you guys have an escape link (weekend getaways, etc.)?
When is the Fall Guiness Toast Off?
Do you know of any bars where primarily Terps alumni hangout? (no College Park bars). I wanna check out the UMD vs. NC State game this Saturday with my fellow Football fans... GO TERPS!

The Going Out Gurus: This is Fritz. Let's hit them quick:
1. Here's the Escapes archive.
2. Guinness Toast Off is November 30. All the usual suspects are participating.
3. As a Maryland alumni myself, the best place in DC to watch games is the Park Bench Pub in Cleveland Park. I've seen lots of fellow Terps there. And I'm hoping to be hanging out with alumni in Miami in a few weeks ...

alex, va: re: romantic date. Well theoretically this could be romantic (and maybe a little corny) if I could ever get it to work (don't ask!) ...

But dinner at 2 quail and then a walk over to union station for a washington by night trolley tour is sweet. Just make sure you get you trolley tickets in advance!

A nice warm thermos full of coffee cocktail would be a nice accompaniment.

The Going Out Gurus: there's so much love out there

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks all for an afternoon of fast and wise repartee. Sometimes it takes a village to get plans. But here's a program note: Next week, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, we Gurus will gather on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Please be there. We'll be waiting.
