Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001; 1 p.m. ET
Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
Hello fun-seekers, and welcome to another edition of "Got Plans?" the chat that answers the eternal question, "Seriously, what is there to do in D.C.?"
I, Jen Chaney (Books, Theatre and Whatever Else Gets Thrown At Me), am your host on this week's journey. I'm joined by the rest of the able-bodied entertainment staff: Alexa (Restaurants), Maura (Museums), Joe (Music), Fritz (Bars and Clubs), Stacy (Sports and Rec, Lovelife and Whatever Else They Throw At Her), Anne (Calendar Editor and All-Around Smart Gal) and Rhome (The Wiz.)
The answer to the aforementioned eternal question is, of course, plenty, especially this weekend. Runners and their supporters will be in full force at the Marine Corps Marathon, Halloween celebrations will be on maximum overdrive and all the restaurants in the fall dining guide will be ready for your patronage. But we want to know what your plans are and how we can help make them better: consider us your own personal concierge.
To spice up things a bit this week, we've also got some prizes to give away. Specifically, we have tickets to several of this weekend's performances at the Kennedy Center: "A Light in the Storm," jazz musician Kurt Elling, Ensemble Galilei and the Miami String Quartet. You can win by smartly answering either of these questions: what's the best thing to do for Halloween this year, and what's the best event or location (a bar, restaurant or store) in the Washington area that's not on the entertainment guide site? Submit your answers before the end of the chat and we'll choose a few lucky winners.
Speaking of winners, don't forget that you can also win box seats to see Britney Spears in all of her chesty glory by entering this .
But enough of my yapping. On with the chat.
Rosslyn VA:
So where exactly is this new place? Somewhere on Wilson Blvd, sounds cool, can't remember the name. You said it was near your offices.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Rosslyn. Fritz here. Gua-Rapo is indeed near our office – it’s on Wilson Blvd., just south of the intersection of Wilson and Courthouse Rd., next to the Post Office. Eric Brace is writing about it in the Weekend section on Nov. 2, but here’s the scoop: downstairs is a restaurant, upstairs is a swank lounge, open Thursday through Saturday. The music is Latin or down-tempo house. Very chill, but that might be because it hasn’t really been discovered yet. Eric thinks the food is better than Chi-Cha’s. I don’t know about that, but Gua-Rapo is shaping up to be the coolest lounge in Virginia.
The Going Out Gurus:
By the way, here is the link (seriously, this time) to the Britney Spears contest.
Alexandria, Va.:
I just moved here earlier in the year and haven't had the chance to explore Old Town fully. I am looking for restaurants in Old Town that offer a variety of foods and are reasonable in price. Also looking ahead towards New Year's Eve, do you know if the City of Alexandria offers any type of celebration?
The Going Out Gurus: Alexandria, Alexa here. I'm not quite sure what you mean by a variety of foods -- different ethnicities in the one place, or a just a large menu? Old Town is a little short on great spots, but among the good ones are Majestic Cafe, Santa Fe East, Geranio... Otherwise there are those middle-of-road places like Union Street or Portner's that have menus that cover many bases -- steaks, Thai noodley dishes, pastas, fried calamari, salads. Old Town always does the First Night non-alcoholic thing. I assume they'll be planning the same for this year.
DC:
For years I've been wanting to do Skyline Drive in Virginia in the Fall to see the beautiful colors. I'd like to go this weekend and I'm wondering if the leaves will be colorful enough, or on the other end, if there are any leaves left. Any word on where I can get that info? With some directions maybe. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: The leaves are quickly falling, DC, but if you rush out this weekend, you will not be disappointed. I (Stacy) am quite certain, however, that Skyline will be the most crowded of the Shenandoah routes. Take a look at this list (directions included) and see if there's another suitable option.
Noorthern Virginia 'burbs:
First, to Fritz -- thanks for the 411 last week on Virginia Beverage happy hour, the stout hit the spot! But why did you call VBC the best draft beer "for the moment"? Rumors of something new coming to OT?
Second, 'nother situation for you gurus -- just been invited to a private party at Tragara in Bethesda. Never been there and have a couple Q's. Is it walkable from Metro? Anyplace cool nearby where a few of us could go hang post-party (11-12ish Saturday)? Despite attire (Tragara's a bit upscale, no, and it is a holiday party) would prefer a laidback atmosphere but not sure how/if I can balance the two.
Appreciate your help!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, ‘Burbs. I said that because VBC brewer Jason Oliver, one of my favorite brewmasters, has left VBC for the Ellicott Mills Brewing Company in Ellicott City, Md. Last I heard, VBC is still serving beers Jason made before he left, but once they’re gone, they’re gone. So get them while the getting is good.
Tragara is on Cordell, between Norfolk and Old Georgetown, so it’s as walkable from Metro as anything in the restaurant district. (I try not to drive in Bethesda on weekends.)
As far as Bethesda around midnight, you’ll be right around the corner from the Fairmont Lounge, a cool late-night spot with dancing, drink specials and a few sofas. If it’s too loud (and it can be), walk down to Chrome, on the other side of Bethesda, where it’s very chill (though sometimes crowded), and no one will brink at your fancy duds.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
Gurus -- I need your help. My older sister is coming down for the weekend and I want to take her to a nearby bar that she would like. I am 22 and she is 35. If there's anyplace that plays Bon Jovi and/or Madonna's music -- she would love it. (She is a total '80s child)! If there isn't anyplace -- please suggest a spot where such 30-somethings might hang out!
Thanks for your help - it is much appreciated!
The Going Out Gurus: Howdy, Dupont, this is Jen, fellow child of the '80s. My first suggestion is Polly Esther's downtown, but keep in mind that it is a bit of a meat market and, depending on your sister's tolerance, she might get sick of it quickly. On the other hand, I can assure you that the Bon Jovi and Madonna will be a-flowing here, so it's worth considering.
If she happens to be arriving tonight, definitely take her to Club Heaven's 80s Night - this week the theme is "Thriller Night," just in time for Halloween. So I hope she likes MJ as much as Madonna.
In Adams Morgan, you might also try Crush or Chief Ike's, where 80s tunes are frequently included in the mix.
Finally, if you're up for a trip to Virginia, The Reflex, a retro cover band, is performing at the State Theatre on Friday night. Apparently they do all the stuff your big sis will remember with a happy cringe: Dexys Midnight Runners, A-Ha, and Duran Duran. So please, please take her now.
Washington, DC:
I love Skee Ball. Know of any places in DC where you can play this addicting game?
The Going Out Gurus: Well DC, if you're not willing to make the trek to the shore, you can always practice your skeeball skills at Jillians, Dave & Buster's and ESPN Zone. Though I (Stacy) think that all of those places can be rather annoying and expensive. Anyone else know of any low-key skeeball venues in the area?
Washington, D.C.:
Gurus:
Can you suggest a place for lunch around 17th and L on a week day? Bread Line? It's not necessarily a date, but want the right atmosphere.
The Going Out Gurus: Washington DC, Alexa here. Bread Line is always a good bet. But also in that area, and I can't speak to its quality because I've yet to go, is Naan & Beyond that specializes in Indian "sandwiches" from the tandoor.
Arlington, Va.:
Have you heard anything good or bad about La Cote d'Or, a French restaurant located on Route 29 on the border between Falls Church and Arlington? TIA
The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, this is Alexa. I'm afraid that if I've heard anything, I'm not remembering what it was. Let's throw this one out to the group and see what bounces back. La Cote, anyone?
Washington, D.C.:
The Marine Corps Marathon is this Sunday. It should be an especially moving event this year. I was wondering if you had any tips for spectators -- where to watch, etc. In addition, any good places to take runners our for post-race refueling?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello D.C. - and Silver Spring, who posted a similar question. TheMarine Corps Marathon begins at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Your best bet to get there is Metro, which opens at 6:30. I'll admit I drove down last year, but parking is even more limited now around many downtown buildings, so I (Maura) will be on the train too, off to cheer on my brother and sister. I think the best spots to watch are those that let you move around and cheer your runners on in as many places as possible (I'm aiming for three). I'd check their map at . A little hard to read, but the 20 mile mark this year seems to be on Independence between 15th and 17th Streets. As for post marathon noshing, get those runners some place comfortable - home? - and get that food fast. Former Marine Corps Marathoner and guru Anne thinks easy take away at Firehook or a similar spot is a good bet.
Bethesda, MD:
I have a friend from NYC visiting next Thursday night. On weekends, I am an 18th St Lounge/Blueroom type of gal . . . what downtown bars/lounges like this are good on Thursday nights?
The Going Out Gurus: Okay Bethesda. I (Stacy) consulted Fritz and Rhome and we think that your weekend standards are still hopping on Thursdays. If you want something different, try Dragonfly, 1223 (you can actually get in the door on most Thursdays), or Andalu--all in the same area.
WDC:
Gurus,
Have a big Halloween party to go to on Saturday and I still don't know what I want to be. I'm 23, female, and will be attending with 3 guy friends of the same age bracket. Can you think of any foursomes we could be?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: What, you actually want us to be creative and stuff? All right, we'll give it our best shot. Here's some ideas that I (Jen) came up with off the top of my head: you could go as part of the cast of Gilligan's Island: the guys can be Gilligan, Skipper and the Professor and you can be Mary Ann, or Ginger if you prefer. I've seen other people do this and it's a fun one. You could also go as the cast of "Pulp Fiction": Vincent Vega, Jewels, Butch (Bruce Willis' boxer character) and you as Mia Wallace. Go as your favorite "Saturday Night Live" characters: Church Lady, Mary Katherine Gallagher, a Conehead, etc. All right, chatters, who else has some good ideas?
Arlington, Va.:
I know it's a tad early, but I'm starting to get into the holiday spirit. Do you know of any holiday carol or Handel's "Messiah" sing-alongs scheduled for this year? I am aware that Wolf Trap's annual carol sing-along is on Sunday, Dec. 2. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington, Anne here. Who's to say what's too early? The mall's seem to be in the holiday spirit, don't they? We are in the process of collecting holiday info, and we'll have much more in a few weeks. I promise that just about every town with a chorus in the area will have a singalong of some type. I urge you to check back with us in mid-November, when we'll have a holiday guide of goodies for you. In the meantime, I can say that the Kennedy Center's annual Messiah singalong will be Dec. 23. Free tickets for it are distributed 10 a.m. Dec. 1 in the Hall of Nations on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Arlington Metropolitan Churs, professional soloists and the Kennedy Center Holiday Festival Orchestra will be your accompanists in music-making.
17th & K:
OK I can speak for it so you can count on me (ahhh....love it when I can come through for the gurus that always helpme out) Naan & Beyond is AWESOME...be sure to check out their chicken tikka sandwich...I found their bryannis not quite so appetizing because they have a lot of peas and me, I'm not such a fan of those. But anyway, the place is really good in an area where it seems practically impossible to get a good meal at a decent price. When I don't have time to go eat lunch at Havana Breeze (another awesome place all the way down 14th street and cheaper than naan & beyond) I always go to naan & beyond. Warning: There are a FEW tables outside and they're usually full so either be prepared to take your food to the park (on a day like today it's perfect) or somewhere else...people love this place and rightfully so.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks 17th and K. You're the naan.
Washington, DC:
I am looking for a live theater performance that will help my children better understand Shakespeare as a playwrite, not just an author, but some of the productions at the Shakespeare Theater are over their heads...not to mention too expensive. Any ideas about where to expose middle school aged kids to Shakespeare?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi DC. This is Maura. Both the Folger and Shakespeare Theater have programs for kids and young adults. This Saturday the Folger hosts a family day of "Bewitching Macbeth." This may be more Halloween than the Bard, but future educational programs look like they might be better suited for a middle schooler. At the Shakespeare Theater their education programs include discussions and student matinees for each of this season's plays. Hope that helps.
Logan Circle:
Hi Gurus. A question for the Nightlife peeps,
What is that place right across the street from Metro Cafe on 14th that's always doing mad business? I'll walk by late at night and there's almost always a HUGE line. I'm blanking on the name, it's one word (and the place is literally 15 feet from Metro.) Any word on why it's such a hot spot? What's the clientele/atmosphere like?
Just curious... thanks. Also- any upcoming shows on the calendars of Metro or Black Cat that shouldn't be missed? Cheers.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Logan. You're thinking of the Saint, an upscale lounge that plays hip-hop, R&B and Latin on the weekends. It's packed because it's well promoted, and the dress code is a little more relaxed than, say, Republic Gardens, which draws a similar crowd. I don't think it's anything special, really, and the bottle service is expensive. But they have a nice patio, and some of the bartenders make excellent martinis.
As far as shows, Joe Heim and I recommend Hot Pursuit and True Love Always (Oct. 28 @BC) and the Lois Maffeo/Brendan Canty show (Nov. 2 @BC), or the Shakedowns/Alphabet Bombers show at the Metro Cafe on the 28th. Good rock and roll, there.
Bowie, Md.:
What do you think of Bilbo Baggins in Old Town Alexandria as a dinner spot?
The Going Out Gurus: Bowie, it's Alexa. Bilbo Baggins, I always think, sort of fancies its own style. I haven't been in a couple of years, but it's a nice place to go in the autumn. It's cozy. But expensive for what it is.
wiredog:
Costume suggestion for gal+3 guys. She's a pimp and they're hookers. Totally non-PC and inappropriate and socially unacceptable, I know, but funny.
The Going Out Gurus: The 'ol gender switcheroo. It's a classic.
Washington, D.C.:
Hi folks,
I have a comment about the new format of the Entertainment page -- frankly, I think it stinks. It's very difficult to navigate, and the page is a mess of too many graphics. The old page was much better organized. I find myself extremely frustrated trying to use the new one because I know specific information I want is there but I can't find it.
Additionally, I found that the restuarant links in the Intern's Guide to D.C.: -http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/entertainment/features/internsguide/front.htm] don't work anymore. If you click on meals under $7 or happy hours, you get sent to the restuarant home page. Could you please have someone take a look at this and fix the links? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Washington, D.C., this is Anne. We're grateful for your feedback. The look of the site did change drastically in August, and that's why we made this tutorial to show users around. Although we have a new look, our information is still here, and in some ways even easier to find. One of the things that I'm most excited about is that you can find events, locations and our feature stories just by typing what you're looking for our search box. It's in blue on the left of the page.
For example, if you type "Interns Guide" in our search box, the new Intern's Guide page with the new links should pop up. I think you must have bookmarked the Intern's Guide page that you're looking at. When we relaunched our site, all the URLs changed.
You can always use this discussion forum to ask a question. And if you have a specific question about how to use our site, please email us at entertainment-help@wpni.com.
Alexandria, VA:
Other restaurant suggestions for Old Town Alex: Cajun Bangkok, Hard Times, Five Guys (just off King Street), Ecco, Los Amigos (very near Austin Grill, with far better food), Cafe Marianna (north end of town, near the big coal piles).
The Going Out Gurus: More options in Alexandria...
Silver Spring, Md.:
Hi Everyone,
Please, please, please help me on this one. I am planning a night on the town for some people coming in for a conference in early November. They are staying at the Hilton Towers at 1919 Connecticut Ave. Can you recommend a good but reasonably priced restaurant within walking distance and then maybe a fun place to go afterwards? What about a place within walking distance for lunch, too?
Thank you very much for help.
The Going Out Gurus: Lots of options for you Silver Spring. But it really depends on how many people are in your party. I (Stacy) would suggest Grill from Ipanema and Pasta Mia in Adams Morgan (a short walk from your hotel). Afterward you can head down 18th St. to Felix's Spy Lounge or the Blue Room. For lunch, walk down the hill to Dupont and dine at Raku or Cafe Luna.
Skee Ball:
There are low-key places in Northern Virginia to play. Try laser-tag or mini-golf places--I know PlanetPlay has skee ball, and they have several locations in the area. Sorry, don't know 'bout D.C.
The Going Out Gurus: tips from NoVa. thanks
Alexandria, VA:
Definitely agree with your assessment of Bilbo Baggins. Good atmosphere, but food sometimes misses the mark. The best time to go there is for brunch. Definitely not for lunch (VERY overpriced then). Dinner's not as bad, but definitely wouldn't be my first choice.
Where's Naan & Beyond located?
The Going Out Gurus: Naan & Beyond.
Annapolis MD:
Halloween suggestion:
One Girl, and 3 boys? I think that just screams for Dukes of Hazzard! We did that in colege and it was a riot. You've got Daisy, and the boys, and then either Cooter, Boss Hog, or, if someone has red hair or wants to go crazy, the General Lee. For a laugh rot, do a twist and have the girl be one of the guys and a guy be Daisy.
Another one is the Jacksons - Janet and 3 brothers.
The Going Out Gurus: Annapolis, that costume idea is just a little bit more than the law will allow. Excellent suggestion.
Columbia & 18th:
Hi, My mom is coming into town this weekend from St. Louis and I'm looking for some great places to eat. She deserves to be spoiled. Nothing too adventurous, but she does like Thai food now. I wanted to take her to Perry's, but not sure she'd dig the food. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Alexa here, what about taking that mom of yours to Thaiphoon in Dupont.
Annapolis MD:
For a laidback atmosphere in Bethesda after midnight, what about Uncle Jed's? It's very laidback and has a great jupebox, pool tables, and a good bar. We have gone there quite often after functions at our parent company, which is right around the corner. It always seems to suit everyone, as opposed to Chrome, which can be intimidating to some. Just thought I would throw my 2 cents in.
The Going Out Gurus: Uncle Jed's is definitely a nice, laid-back option. Thanks, Annapolis.
Fairfax, VA:
Hello Gurus! Do you guys know of any bars and/or clubs that are having Halloween costume parties this weekend? Have you found that the majority of people actually dress up for these things? Just asking since I don't want to be the only one wearing a costume. Thanks a bunch!
The Going Out Gurus: Check our Halloween parties link, Fairfax, although there are dozens of bars that are having costume parties and drink specials. This is Fritz, and I can tell you from experience that you'll probably find more people dressed up at, say, Polly Esther's or Lulu's than at Patriot Cafe, which is having a costume and karaoke contest. If there's a costume contest, you might as well dress up, because you won't be the only one (and if you are, you'll win).
Washington, DC:
Hey Gurus, great job as always. I was wondering if there were any Halloween parties this weekend or on Halloween with a playlist of primarily top 40, hiphop or R&B. Thanks a lot.
The Going Out Gurus: Looks like all the fabulous folk will be at Zanzibar on Wednesday. Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock performing... (Huh??!? Will EZ Rock do the dance from the video where he "gets loose"? Stay tuned) Quicksilver from 'KYS rocking hip-hop and dancehall, Soho spinning dance & house flavors on the 2nd floor. I think I (Rhome) might post up by the line outside and watch for freaky costumes.
Best thing for Halloween?:
Sp00ky at the Black Cat/Cage of course! I know people who have been planning costumes for months. When Halloween is everyday, you've got to do something -really- over the top for the Most Important Holiday of the year! Goths rule! Whooo!
The Going Out Gurus: The Goths probably will have the best outfits. They get plenty of practice ...
Adams Morgan:
I am looking for an authentic crab eating restaraunt. I'm talking newspaper on the tables, wooden mallet, metal buckets, old bay, and bud's. What are some of the best ones I can go to?
BTW you guys rock.
The Going Out Gurus: Well, AM, you've really already missed prime crab-eating season, but we still have some options for you. I (Stacy) hear that the new Annapolis Grill is still serving hardshells as is my personal favorite--the Quartedeck. You might also want to try Bethesda Crab House.
Skyline Drive:
Hello: I was just out in the Shen. Valley last weekend (my parents live there) and the leaves are pretty much already on the ground. Sorry, folks.... they seem to be about 2 weeks ahead of us.
The Going Out Gurus: a tip from a local leaf-watcher.
Alexandria:
Hey Gurus. I have a bunch of old friends from school in this weekend and we're looking to go out to catch up this Friday. I'm looking for a place with good atmosphere, but not too loud for conversation and not too pretentious either. We're big drinkers, but not big spenders, so I'd like to stretch my drinking dollar. Any ideas in Adam's Morgan, Dupont area? Thanks and keep up the good work.
The Going Out Gurus: Alexandria, my first instinct is the Fox and Hounds in Dupont, but that might be crowded, now that it's getting too cold for the patio. (This is Fritz.) The Common Share is cheap, but it's always loud. Depending on the time, you might want to consider Toledo Lounge, Adams Mill Bar and Grill, Dan's Cafe or Millie and Al's. The latter two don't get as packed or Toledo or Adams Mill. Just remember that's it's a Friday, so you should arrive early if you and your friends want seats.
Washington, DC:
Hi there, For the person interested in La Cote d'Or...It is wonderful and I highly recommend it. It is very pricey though for Falls Church. They used to have an early bird special so I would check into that.
Enjoy!
The Going Out Gurus: A report bounces back. Thank you.
McLean, VA:
For the marathon question about where to watch best....Haines Point. Assuming the race still goes around there - you get to see them coming in and going out from the point. Its also right around Mile 20 and its usually deserted and depressing for the runners.
Another suggestion if you are watching for specific people - bring a recognizable symbol like a balloon or a sign or a cow bell - something that as a runner you'd recognize and realize your supporters are near and runners - wear something recognizable to your supporters - my fave was the Krispy Kreme shirt - could spot it from a mile away.
The Going Out Gurus: Very good suggestions, thanks Marathon Man or Woman.
Connecticut:
I'm coming down to D.C. this weekend to visit some friends (I lived in the D.C. area for 13 years, and moved north two years ago). I'll be staying in Northern Virginia and Metroing to and fro. What fun stuff is there to do in town, specifically Saturday during the day? Any cool artsy stuff -- museum exhibits, movies, concerts, etc.? Any fun recommendations for a former City Kid? Thanks a bunch!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi CT. Good to have you back, if only for the weekend. As for artsy things to do, I (Maura) might check one of three great sculpture exhibits in town - the 20th century master Henry Moore at the National Gallery, the late Spaniard Juan Munoz (he's a hit at the Tate and MOMA) at the Hirshhorn or contemporary Chinese artist Xu Bing at the Sackler. After those, why not check out something new on 7th, like Jenny Okun at the Numark Gallery or the fab home shop Vega. Movies? I loved the quirky independent Happy Accidents at the Foundry and you haven't tried Visions Cinema yet, have you? Concerts? Not sure what you're up for, so try Joe's music guide Have fun.
Rockville, MD:
Any word on when hotels/restaurants or you guys will announce New Year's celebrations and events? I want to go all out this year since I was sick last year, so I am anxious to get started planning! THANKS!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Rockville - this is Fritz, and I've been getting "TBA announcements" in the last few weeks, as in "[So-and-so Productions] is throwing their New Year's Eve party at [A Club or Hotel]! Stay tuned for more details soon!" At that point, why bother? I'm wouldn't plan my New Year's on the basis of a promoter or a location. Bands, DJs and details are the keys. To answer your question, I have calls out to a number of places, so we should have a growing list by Thanksgiving, at the latest. Stay tuned.
Fall Church, VA:
Gurus, My husband and I have friends of ours in town this weekend from NYC . Looking for a fun DC restaurant (mid-price range) for Saturday night--they've been to Jaleo and Lauriol Plaza before. Haven't heard much about Georgetown these days--anything there? We're also interested in going someplace afterwards for drinks...
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Falls Church. Alexa. Check out the reviews of Georgetown's new Red Ginger.
Fairfax, VA:
Hi Gurus, another holiday question. I really want to go see "The Nutcracker" this year. Which performance would you recommend, the Washington Ballet at Warner Theater, or the American Ballet Theatre at the Kennedy Center? These shows aren't sold out yet, are they?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Fairfax. No, I don't think they are sold out just yet. I (Maura) am afraid we gurus can't come up with a definitive who's better, so let's ask our readers. Any thoughts?
Alexandria, VA:
As far as upcoming shows, be sure to check out Stereolab at the 930 club!
The Going Out Gurus: Should be a big crowd for this one.
Marathon Man:
Oops, Haines Point is out this year thanks to some construction. Instead, the course goes up Rock Creek Dr. from Georgetown to near the zoo, and then back down to the Mall. Not sure what kind of access they'll have on Rock Creek Dr. for the public, but if you can get there, you'll be able to see your runners twice! (out and back)
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the update.
Dupont Circle:
Hi! I recently moved here so I don't know what to suggest for a group gathering I am planning. We need a place that will take reservations b/c there will be about 8 of us. We are looking for a fun place for some mid-30's year olds that isn't Tex-Mex in Dupont Circle/Adams Morgan. I know this next one may be impossible, but one member can't hear too well so maybe a place that isn't too noisy (if possible). I really do appreciate it! You guys are great.
The Going Out Gurus: No problem Dupont. Most local places will take reservations for tables of eight. I (Stacy) have enjoyed some pretty quiet group gatherings at Buca di Beppo (though some do not favor the family-style servings), Levante's and Perry's. Enjoy!
Washington, D.C.:
Alright, Amigos, Halloween is on Wednesday. But when are the big celebrations going to take place? Is there a specific night -- hopefully next Friday or Saturday -- when all the ghouls and goblin will, en masse, hit the streets of Georgetown and elsewhere in their get-ups?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington - it looks like Georgetown's big night will be on Halloween itself, looking at the bars that are having parties and costume contests on Wednesday (Third Edition, Garrett's, Riverside Grille, Modern, and so on).
Washington, D.C.:
Hello:
For the person interested in ballet and Nutcracker -- the American Ballet Theatre is definitely the way to go. They are one of the top ballet companies in the world and are not to be missed.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, D.C.
Dupont Circle:
My friend is visiting from Williamsburg Brooklyn, the hotbed of avant garde art now in NYC. We would like to go to some art galleries. I've been to the galleries around Dupont, but they seem sort of mainstream. Is there anything more avant garde around in DC?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey Dupont. I (Maura) think you might want to check out Fusebox, D.C.'s newest gallery. At 1700 square feet, it's bigger than most other galleries. Better? I'll let you and your friend decide. Don't forget Signal 66 is always a good bet and try U Street for two younger galleries - Decatur Blue and Kitchen [K]. Each has put on some compelling shows of late.
The Going Out Gurus: From Rhome: I have a few more pesos to toss into the pot folks... To the person asking about shows at the Black Cat, you need to hit that spot TONIGHT. The lovely Res, new female artist on MCA will be there along with Fertile Ground. Res did her thing nicely opening for Maxwell last night but I think the room was too big, the Black Cat will be friendlier and more manageable. Fertile? Well, all I can say is if you've never seen them, be prepared for a spiritual experience. That band channels the ancestors on stage, and they're about to blow worldwide. And to tag onto my answer above about Halloween shindigs, Tom Joyner/Majic 102.3 are doing it for the Over-30 crew at 2K9 on Wednesday. Kenny Latimore and Regina will be performing. I think you need to listen in to the station and get one of those 30 & Over club cards for admittance.
Alexandria, VA:
Parents are coming into town. Have done the regular tourists sites a million times. Any suggestions on something different? (and still avoid the marathon mess on Sunday).
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Alexandria, this is Anne. Maybe your parents have seen the monumental side of Washington, but have they seen it as a city? Trot them downtown (business there need all the tourists they can find, these days) and point out the outstanding changes in development that are going on. Have a beer with lunch at Gordon Biersch, browse the designs at Apartment Zero and Vega. If they get excited about home re-decorating, head uptown to visit the NSO Decorator's Show House. On Saturday, show them that memorials can be wild. Celebrate Theodore Roosevelt's 143rd birthday with activities and walking tour on Roosevelt Island. Are they Shakespeare fans? Campaign to go to Macbeth at the Folger -- this interpretation has a particularly political bent to it. To avoid the marathon-induced road-closings on Sunday, take Metro, or don't try to drive north of the 14th Street bridge until late afternoon.
Washington DC:
Another 80s question for the Gurus:
What places in Alexandria or Arlington offer 80s hits as music? Upscale, meat markets just won't do...but I would consider D.C. or Bethesda locations too.
Thanks, your help is much appreciate!
The Going Out Gurus: So far, we haven't heard about much on the Virginia side -- if anyone knows of an 80s night in Arlington or Alexandria, please let us know.
Take a look at this round-up of 80s spots in D.C. and Maryland. Note: I've just discovered that Uncle Jed's Roadhouse no longer hosts an 80s night, but they do have a Ms. Pac-man game there, for what that's worth.
Sterling:
Can you shed some light on Club Daedules? Has an Asian flavor and was wondering if its happening or not?
I was at Cafe Citron and it was mobbed last Sat night. Think it had much to do with people getting out of their funk?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Sterling. I've only seen Daedalus on Friday nights, and it was pretty happening ... but I think waaaaay too much space is given to tables that require bottle service (ie you have to buy an entire bottle of liquor or champagne) and food. It's got an upscale vibe that sometimes feels like it's trying too hard - but that happens at a number of clubs.
Washington, DC:
Hi there: Love the chats! My friends and I would like to rent out a bar or room in a bar for a New Year's Party either downtown or in the Arlington area. Any suggestions of places to try? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: We are actually in the midst of writing up a story with lots of suggestions for you, DC. But if you want a jump on the competition, you can try calling the Blue Room, Felix and Childe Harold in DC. Or Carpool, Gaffneys and Whitlows in Arlington.
U Street NW:
Another great upcoming show at the Metro Cafe: Emm Gryner on Monday Oct. 29. She's a singer from Toronto. Sort of like Tori Amos. She has just released a album of covers by artists such as Fugazi, Blur, Def Leppard, and Death Cab for Cutie (who by the way are coming to the Black Cat on Nov.1.) Also at the Black Cat check out local artist Jenny Toomey on Veterans' day.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the suggestions U Street. This is Joe and I've been listening to Jenny Toomey's new cd (well, double cd) quite a bit lately. It's very good and I'm looking forward to the show. Some other interesting women coming to town soon include Scout Niblett November 6 at the Velvet Lounge and (something totally different) Cape Breton fiddle player Natalie MacMaster at the Birchmere on Halloween.
A bit of other music news: Lyle Lovett is coming to the Birchmere and the Rams Head in mid-November. Tickets are on sale today through Ticketmaster. The Rams Head shows are $75. (Yeah, that's right, $75) and the Birchmere shows are $59.50. Phew, Julia Roberts must be behind in her alimony payments.
Dulles, VA:
What's the best place for Sunday brunch in Old Town? I've seen several restaurants that advertise it.
The Going Out Gurus: For brunch in Old Town, I tend to head to the Virginia Beverage Company. It's a big old buffet that includes, among many other things, a deep fried Cajun turkey (always a favorite) and superb waffles. I think it runs around $17, not including the bloody mary bar. Otherwise there's a hilarious brunch to be had at the far north end of Old Town at The Royal on North Saint Asaph.
Gordon Biersch:
Some friends of mine are heading to Gordon Biersch tonight for happy hour. I can't stand dark, heavy beers (my favorite beer is Miller Lite -- don't laugh). Will I be able to find something to drink there?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, you Miller drinker. (This is Fritz, who drank Miller Lite last night at Lucky Bar b/c it was the special.) You can try the Golden Export, which is light in color but not in taste. The Pilsner is just a touch darker. You might want to ask for the sampler and try all of their beers to see if one suits you.
Maryland 'burbs:
Are you (or have you) prepared a list of restaurants open for Thanksgiving dinner?
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we're in the midst of compiling a Thanksgiving guide, to be published on the site next week.
Farragut Square:
Hi,
Where do you think are the best clubs for an aspiring local band that plays rock/pop/lounge music to gig at?
Thank you!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi FS, this is Joe and it's a bit hard to answer that question without hearing the band. Do they play mostly covers or original material. I think the best thing is to go out to clubs or check their schedules and see which places have the most in common with your style of music.
Re: Skee ball:
Chuck E. Cheese
The Going Out Gurus: always a winner.
Wash, DC:
Hi Gurus... A group of us (6) want to go to a comedy club on Friday night. We wanted to go to Jokes on Us, but the comedian isn't particularly what we had in mind. Does anyone know the name of the new comedy club downtown? I think it's called Teddy's or something? How about a weblink? A suggestion for a chill place to eat before-hand would be nice - somewhere downtown, 20-something crowd, not too expensive. Thanks again - I think you guys do a good job of covering activities for all cultures, all age groups, etc. Keep up the good work!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello - this is Fritz, and I just sent a reviewer to Teddy's House of Comedy, which is owned by Teddy Carpenter of BET Comic View and Def Comedy Jam. Her review will be up soon, but here's a teaser. She said it's typical Improv-style stage, but small (like 50 tables). The drinks are on the expensive side, with a two drink minimum in addition to the cover, which averages about $15-25. Teddy is trying to get his friends from Comic View to perform, but I haven't gotten a new schedule from the club. Call 202/289-1695 for more information, and let us know how it was.
The Going Out Gurus:
(Rhome chimes in again)... We've got some Jenny Toomey too. Always holding it down for the DC/Metro area...
Bethesda, MD:
Are there any bars in the District or Bethesda that serve mojitos. I was recently turned onto them in NYC. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Bethesda. You need to go to Cafe Citron for their happy hour - $3.95 mojitos. My favorites (this is Fritz) are at Rumba Cafe on 18th Street, where the mint leaves are thick and the rum is strong.
Hot Date:
Hi Gurus!
My boyfriend and my 3 year anniversary is tonight, but we were hoping for a good Fri night date that includes dinner and something free-to-not very expensive as an outing. It can extend to include Sat. day as well. Any ideas? We're not looking for clubs or bars - rather quiet dinner and a nice jaunt somewhere.
Thanks!!!
The Going Out Gurus: H.D. I'm not sure where you want to dine, but for a romantic meal Alexa and I (Maura) banged our heads together and think maybe Neyla, Melrose or Peter's Passion. Not the cheapest, but they're perfect for quiet conversation. As for free, did you know Roosevelt Island is celebrating Teddy's 143rd birthday tomorrow? How about a crisp - it's going to be chilly - hike.
Alexandria, Va.:
Maybe the third time will be the charm:
My parents, who have done every major tourist activity in the DC 100 times, are coming into town this weekend. Any suggestions on off-the-beaten-path places/events for them? They're in their early 60s and pretty much open to anything.
The Going Out Gurus: The third time is always the charm Alex. The city should be a bit more crowded than it has been with lots of marathon events this weekend. But if you're looking for something different, perhaps you can stroll down 7th street by the MCI Center and stop in at some impressive galleries. Check out a performace at Dance Place, or go on a haunted walking tour. If all that activity tires you out, try one of these parent-pleasing restaurants.
Washington, D.C.:
Re: La Cote d'Or
I've been there and it's great. The ambiance is warm and cozy; French Provincial and the food is excellent. They have a delicious caramel and raspberry dessert that you shouldn't miss.
The Going Out Gurus: More from the gang.
Petworth:
First, have to agree on the new home page. Too busy, and takes forever on my modem at home. And the price ranges on the restaurants are not there! (Just those not-so-helpful dollar signs.) And, the restaurant database is full of long-closed places.
Now, on to my question:
Do any of you know what happened to Bella Roma? It had to move because that block of Cleveland Park got bought by a developer. Then, they opened in the TINY space next to Ivy's. Now, they're gone, and the space is empty with a for lease sign. Have they moved? Please, don't tell me they're GONE? They were SUCH a good place for basic Italian food.
The Going Out Gurus: Petworth, 'tis Anne. Since the relaunch, we've been furiously routing out bugs like the one you mention -- that some closed restaurants appeared on the site unintentionally. We're working hard to get rid of these, and we always welcome your help. If you see a specific location that's closed and is still showing up on the site, please send us an email to tell us which one it is, so we can get rid of it. You can email to entertainment-help@wpni.com. As for Roma, it vacated its lovely spot a few years back to make way for Firehook, and moved in near the firehouse. I promise to scout out the current situation and get back to you next week. In the meantime, for basic Italian fare, there is the Uno's across the street. But for the best pizza you've ever had, you definitely want Vace.
skee ball:
For the skee ball afficionado: Putt Putt in Rockville has an arcade with skee ball. It's for kids of all ages, and inexpensive! I think they might be mini-lanes, though.
The Going Out Gurus: let's hear it for putt putt
Cote d'Or:
My office is one block over from Cote d'Or in Falls Church. I think it's a fab, cozy little French place, pricey but not pretentious. My boyfriend, a Cambodian Francophile (huh?), said their bouillabaisse was the best he'd ever had.
A couple of years ago, a bunch of us were dressed up for a show downtown -- but ice storms made it impossible to go anywhere. So we called Cote d'Or and they said they'd had a bunch of cancellations, so we went on in. The waiters were friendly and more than willing to explain the menu to us.
Lunch there is more reasonably priced, by the way -- I think $6 to $15 maybe.
Go! It's totally worth it!
The Going Out Gurus: And more...
The Going Out Gurus:
Note to the person who suggested that we do a feature on lunch for the disgruntled worker: you're the winner of our contest today. Please e-mail jen.chaney@wpni.com with your name, address and phone number and we can figure out which Kennedy Center tickets you can use.
Hoping to squeeze this in...:
Where is a good beer/darts/pool hangout in upper NW or Bethesda/Chevy Chase? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Have you been to Babe's Billiards? This is Fritz, and Babe's is better than its college hangout reputation. You'll find good tables, a few dart lanes, decent draft selection, and it's open until 4 a.m. on weekends. They also have foosball. You could also try Atomic Billiards in Cleveland Park if that's far enough uptown.
DC:
The lounge scence is officially dead if the latest 'hotspot' is in Arlington. Somewhere to go when the beers get warm at Mr. Days?
The Lounge is Dead, Long Live the Lounge
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Maurico Fraga-Rosenfeld, the owner of Gua-Rapo, Chi-Cha, Bambule and Gazuza, has a good track record with lounges. I (Fritz) am sure it won't be as cheesy as some of the Bethesda lounges can be. Besides, some of us who live in DC but work in Arlington would like a good after-work lounge.
Drinkin' in Dupont:
Some suggestions for Alexandria -- for usually quite low key but underrated places -- Townhouse Tavern at 17th and R, and Stetson's on U Street. Townhouse has pretty cheap drinks and is a fantastic chill place, altho food can be a little pricey.
But for the ultimate budget drinker, you're right, Fox and Hounds is it.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, DiD. We like Stetson's. Good pitcher specials.
The Going Out Gurus:
That about wraps it up for today. Sorry we couldn't get to all of your questions, but join us again next week and we'll try to pick up the pieces. Have a joyous and "Dukes of Hazzard"-filled Halloween.
Lauriol Plaza?:
Gurus:
I asked last week about taking a date to the above place. We met there, but the lines were too long at 8 p.m. -- so we headed up to Perry's. She loved Perry's, saying it was the best of the restaurants I had taken her (Vivo, Al Tiramisu, Cashion's).
Alas, things did not work out between us -- it was never meant to be -- but I am glad we enjoyed our last meal together, rather than waiting in line for mediocre food.
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the feedback - we told you so!
The Going Out Gurus:
No, really that was the last question. Catch you next week.
