Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment
Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local
entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to
the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off
on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell
us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the
entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more
ideas, see the Entertainment
Guide.
The discussion ended at 2:20. The transcript is below.

The Going Out Gurus:
Welcome to another edition of Got Plans. There are lots of options for those of you looking to get out of the house this weekend. Take advantage of free Metro rides both Saturday and Sunday and explore some local sites you might have overlooked. Or dine out tonight at one of 18 local restaurants and 10 percent of the proceeds will benefit the Windows of Hope Fund. And it's that time again. Don't put off your Halloween planning to the last minute. We can help you find a costume and a great place to show it off on the 31st.
Here to help are restaurant queen Alexa Beattie, music know-it-all Joe Heim, barfly Fritz Hahn, museums champ Maura McCarthy, dj stylus Rhome Anderson, calendar girl Anne Kenderdine, theater and books phenom Jen Chaney, all-about-town editor Kate Gibbs, and me, your host of the day, Stacy Rosenberg. So let's give it a go, shall we?
Northern Virginia:
I'm submitting way early because I am so frustrated! I am meeting a friend for dinner in the Tyson's area next week and am trying to find a list of restaurants in the Galleria mall, where Saks and Macy's are. Can you help please?
The Going Out Gurus: Calm yourself NVa. Alexa is here. You have a few choices and these are they (if I'm forgetting any then perhaps one of the folk at home would like to chime in): Legal Sea Foods, Maggiano's and the Corner Bakery, Daily Grill. Feeling any better?
Conundrum, VA:
Is anyone aware of any bars/clubs/cool restaurants that rent out private rooms on a Firday or Saturday night for a get-togehter of about 50 people? Preferably in DC or VA. I want to throw my honey a surprise b-day party in a fun atmosphere but I am stumped on where to turn. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Conundrum, no problem. I (Maura) have done this before at the Blue Room with - may I humbly say - great success. We've also heard good things about Clarendon Grill and Stetson's. Fritz suggests Whitlow's on Wilson where you can rent the sand bar. Have fun.
Alexandria, VA:
Where are some good places to go apple picking in Virginia? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: There are lots of good places in Va, Alexandria. Take a gander at this long list of options.
Alexandria, Va.:
Don't mean to jump holidays, but -- can you suggest a local theater performing "A Christmas Carol"?
The Going Out Gurus: Alexandria, it's never to early to think about Christmas, as long as you don't start decorating for it until early December. I (Jen) hate it when the shopping malls toss around the tinsel too early.
As you might expect, several theaters usually do "A Christmas Carol" during the holiday season. If you want to see a traditional version of the Scrooge story, then by all means go to the Ford's Theatre, which is known for its annual production of the play. It opens Thanksgiving weekend. If you prefer less conventional Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, then go to the Round House in Silver Spring, which is doing its annual "A Broadway Christmas Carol." It's still the same story, but with a lot of Broadway showtunes thrown in for added humor. I've heard good things about it, so you might want to consider checking it out.
Merry Christmas (oh yeah, and Happy Halloween.)
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus, always love your advice!
Do you guys know the time/date yet for the annual drag race/high heel race thing in Dupont? I know it is a Halloween thing, but didn't know if it was on Halloween or what.
Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Sure Capitol Hill. I (Stacy) have been looking forward to the drag races since last year's fab showing. You can see it this year on Tuesday, Oct. 23rd. And for future reference, the high-heel race is usually the Tuesday before Halloween.
Washington, DC:
Have you guys heard when tickets will be available for CONTACT playing at the National Theatre Feb. 19- March 17, 2002?
Thanks so much!!!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C., Jen here. Individual tickets for "Contact" are not yet available; the only way to get them this early is by subscribing to National's subscription series. If you have the money, it might not be a bad idea: the other shows are: "Mamma Mia," "Saturday Night Fever," and, possibly, "The Full Monty." It was supposed to be the first show of the series, but was postponed; there's still a possibility it will come to National, just later in the season. Keep checking back to the site because once individual tix for "Contact" are available, we'll let you know.
Silver Spring, Md.:
Are there any Survivor "sports bars" in the D.C. area -- food, drink, big-screen TVs -- where I can watch the premiere of "Survivor 3" on Thursday night? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Silver Spring. This is Fritz. Mango Mike's in Old Town Alexandria is hosting weekly "Survivor" again this season. They'll have the show on all their TVs, drink specials and a weekly contest. Predict who gets voted off (before ths show starts) and you'll earn beads, which you can exchange for drinks.
Renting a room:
The Star Saloon has a great space upstairs. Pretty inexpensive.
The Going Out Gurus: thanks for the tip.
Glover Park:
Gurus - thanks so much for your help in planning a bachelorette party. I took your advice - we went to Andalucia in Bethesda, then Chrome. Dinner was delicious and Chrome was a perfect post-dinner spot. We ended the evening at the Shark Club, which though a little cheesy, was a blast. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: thanks for getting back to us--and thanks to Fritz and Jen for the superb bachelorette advice!
Bethesda, MD:
Hi all! I'm looking for something to do in Old Town Alexandria tomorrow night. Any live music going on? What's good for a reasonably priced, yet romantic meal? Anything else fun? Thanks much!
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Bethesda. Alexa speaking. Do you enjoy the Austin Grill? One of my fave places to go in Old Town for a reasonable evening of fun, not to mention some bang-on top shelf margaritas is the South Austin Grill. It's really one of OT's better bets. Then perhaps you could see what's playing at the Basin Street Lounge. Sound OK?
College Park, MD:
Where's the best place to have a picnic in the city? Also, since there's free Metro this weekend, I recommend taking advantage of that to everyone!
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, College Park, we recommend that free Metro too. As for picnics, we have a round up of fave spots right here.
WDC:
What are your thoughts on the Cap City Bar Crawl, to be held this Saturday? I haven't been to one in a couple of years.
The Going Out Gurus: This is Fritz, and since we've gotten a number of questions about this weekend's Cap City Bar Crawl, I'm going to try and combine them all into one response.
The crawl takes place from noon until 9 p.m. Saturday. You can sign up until 7 at Rumors, Mackey's or Tequila Grill. The $13 cover ($10 w/two cans of food for Martha's Table) gets you $2 Bud and Bud Light drafts at the 11 participating bars (click on the link above for a list). Those are the only specials associated with the crawl. Whether the bars will be honoring their usual happy hour deals (Sign of the Whale's $2.50 drafts, for example) is up in the air, but they have in the past.
The crawls draw a 21-30-year-old crowd, mainly guys, and if you like Budweiser, it's a cool way to socialize and explore bars you might not have visited (or usually ignore). I'd have a hard time justifying $20 for five Buds at the Bottom Line on a Saturday afternoon, though.
McLean, VA:
Where can I find a list of DC restaurants that are offering discounts this weekend as part of the promotion to bring people to DC?
The Going Out Gurus: This is Kate. I'm glad so many of you asked about this. I was very moved last night by Michael Lomonaco, former executive chef of Windows on the World restaurant, who appeared on Charlie Rose to talk about the creation of a charity in aid of the families of his 74 lost coworkers, many of them low income immigrants. Tonight hundreds of restaurants nation-wide have volunteered to donate at least 10 percent of their evening's sales to the Windows of Hope Fund.
In the District, the 12 participating restaurants are: Arucola Osteria, Bistro Bis, Butterfield 9, Felix Restaurant, Mimi's American Pub, Mimi's American Bistro, New Heights, Restaurant Nora, Senses Bakery & Restaurant, Smith & Wolensky, The Oceanaire Seafood Room, Vidalia.
In Virginia, check out: Taqveria Poblano in Alexandria, Artie's in Fairfax, Le Relais Restaurant & Bar & Vin in Great Falls, Laurel Brigade Inn, Lightfoot, The Ledges and Tuscarora Mill all of Leesburg or the Inn at Little Washington.
In Maryland, try Cafι Normandie, Castlebay Irish Pub, Joss Cafι & Sushi Bar all of Annapolis, Raku in Bethesda, Jerry's Seafood in Lanham or Almalfi or Rockville.
Can't get out, but would like to contribute? Send a check to:
Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund

New York, NY 10017
Checks should be made payable to: Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund.
Note: Fritz is tending an ever-changing page of all local fundraisers.
DC 20008:
Hey guys,
I remember reading an article or two a few weeks ago about shows at small venues and little known bands that will be playing in DC soon. Well, I'm planning my weekend and I can't find those articles anymore. Can you send me the link or tell me about some cool music being played in the city this weekend?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello 008, this is Joe and most of the shows from that article have passed, but there are a number of good smaller-scale concerts in the days ahead. Canyon, a local band I really like, is playing at Iota tonight. If you're looking for top-of-the-line progressive hip-hop, check out the Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Bilal show at Howard tomorrow.
A couple of great country choices: Iris Dement at the Birchmere, Wednesday and country singer Allison Moorer at Wolf Trap next Thursday
Minuteman Mike Watt is at the Black Cat on the 16th.
If none of those work for you, here are some other options.
Washington DC:
Another holiday question.... I want to take my two grown daughter to the ballet this Christmas. Which Nutcracker ballet is better... the American Ballet at the Kennedy Center or the Washington Ballet at Warner Theatre?
The Going Out Gurus: As the theatre producer, I (Jen) am chagrined to admit that I've never been to either "Nutcracker" and therefore am not sure which is better. But perhaps some of you have opinions on the matter: any of you nutty folks want to take a crack at this question? (See, this is why I don't go to the ballet. People who make jokes like that shouldn't be allowed to get too close to professional ballerinas...)
Crystal City, VA:
Hey Gurus,
I'm looking for Chech food. Don't suppose you know of any Eastern European restaurants around here do you?
The Going Out Gurus: There's a place whose name I (Alexa)simply can't remember, though I think it begins with a 'K.' Can anyone help us out with this request for Chech?
Washington, D.C.:
I always fall asleep on the metro. Its peaceful. Should I take advantage of the free metro this weekend and just sleep back and forth all day b/w Vienna and New Caraloton? Do you think they will mind?
The Going Out Gurus: if that's how you want to spend your day, DC, go for it.
former WPNIer:
Hello gurus. This is Kate's former cube neighbor. My niece has a booth at the crafts section of the Herndon Folk Festival this weekend. Do you guys have any info on that event?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hullo friend! Of course we do. Perhaps C. might enjoy a trip to Jimmy's Old Town Tavern afterwards, we think it's the best bar in Herndon.
Eternally Grateful:
Alrighty gurus, I am submitting early because I really, really need your help and trust you guys like no other.
My parents are coming for a visit this weekend (Thursday-Monday), and this is extremely rare that they're both here at the same time so needless to say I have to show them a good time. They've both been here before a handful of times so I can't just do the monuments stuff but they're also oldies so I can't exactly take them to Mousetrap this Saturday (though I would love that). So my first question is what kind of cultural events can I take them to? I really wanted to get tickets to the opera but alas, there is no opera this weekend and every time I look into some kind of theater it seems like there is nothing this weekend, any help on that front would be appreciated. But also (and perhaps more challenging) they told me that they're sick of staying in D.C. when they come visit me so they want to rent a car and take a day trip somewhere. The problem is I don't know where to go. I know the natural Harper's Ferry and stuff like that but I want something that they'll find interesting and important points in Civil War is not exactly their bag. Argh. I'm at a complete and total loss so please help! You guys are awesome, super-cool and amazing (wow, that's a lot of superlatives). Thanks again.
The Going Out Gurus: There's lots for the parents to do this weekend, EG. We'll understand if you don't want to see the Oedipus Plays with your parents, but why not try the family sagaCloudstreet at the Kennedy Center if you are feeling hearty (it's 5 hours with a dinner break). I (Maura)just checked and great seats are still available. It may sound overwhelming, but it's generating quite a buzz. Other cultural events this weekend include buy one get one free at Blues Alley and Audra McDonald at the Kennedy Center. It's 20% off Far East at Studio Theater and there's always the Herndon Folk Festival. As for a day trip, I am planning my next one to Baltimore with the reopening of its Walters Museum - there will be lots of events and performances on Saturday - and the Visionary Art Museum just opened the timely "Art of War and Peace".
Washington, DC:
I have some friends coming in town for the weekend from NY. We're all in our early twenties. What are your suggestions (aside from the Midtown Bar Crawl)?
The Going Out Gurus: Oh, DC, I (Jen) have so many suggestions for you and your NYC pals. The Midtown Bar Crawl is a good option, especially because it will allow you to take advantage of the free Metro. But there are other events happening, too. Want to impress them with D.C.'s fabulous art scene? Then, again, take the free Metro to the Phillips Collection to see the Impressionist exhibit (which just so happens to offer two-for-one admission this weekend.) Also consider a trip to the Bethesda Row Arts Festival (again, Metro accessible.) Or, if you're in a Halloween mood and don't mind going for a bit of a drive, visit the Markoffs' Haunted Forest in Poolesville. I wrote a story about it a couple of years ago, and I guarantee you this place is scary, as in grown-men-wetting-their-pants scary. It'll be like starring in your own personal "Blair Witch Project," but without that annoying Heather and her constant whining. Enjoy!
Washington, DC:
Don't forget the Dine for America program -- that's also tonight, and I think there are other restaurants involved. www.dineforamerica.com
My question, though, is can you recommend a place that has great pasta like Pasta Mia, good prices like Pasta Mia, but isn't so crowded and overheated like Pasta Mia?
The Going Out Gurus: Washington, this is Alexa. Have you been to Il Radicchio. We like it.
Annapolis MD:
Just wanted to send out a reminder to people looking for a fun day trip this weekend that the Power Boat show is in Annapolis. Even if you aren't in the market, or even a boat lover, the Power Boat show is a fun time - good people watching, ridiculously opulent boats, great food (especially the Pit beef from the Fleet Reserve), and always a party.
The Going Out Gurus: thanks to the annapolis tourism board. sounds like a nice day trip...
Fairfax, VA:
I'm in my mid-20's and like to go to larger clubs that play a mix of house and techno for 21 and up. It seems like every club like this though is 18 and up .Are there any good nightclubs for people 21 and up to go to on Friday and Saturday nights?
The Going Out Gurus: The short take here seems that you want to avoid under-21 folks. My short answer (from Rhome that is) is to not go to any club nights on this list. Keep in mind that the age policy of most clubs of this type changes depending on what day of the week it is.
Washington, DC:
This weekend is the Howard Homecoming, but I don't see alot of the parties listed on your site. Can you give me a rundown of what's happening? A recommendation for Friday and Saturday?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. I (Fritz) have been trying to get my lists together, but I'm having a really hard time getting promoters to give me specifics and confirmations. Here's what I can recommend:
The biggest parties will be at Republic Gardens, where they are once again breaking out the giant tent in the parking lot next door. Former HU student Puffy/P-Diddy/Sean John is hosting Friday's party with Russ Parr and Olivia Fox. (And there's the usual complementary lavish buffet and open bar from 5-7.) On Saturday, there's the Mike Tyson fight on all the TVs, plus more tent action. Cover is going to increase as the night goes on, so early arrival is suggested.
Over at DC Live, Fabolous and Mobb Deep are performing on Friday night (use the 10th Street entrance, NOT the F Street, and arrive before 11). On Saturday, that squeaky-voiced clown Jermaine Dupree is hosting an album release party, but I haven't been able to nail down a time or cover charge on this event. As Poem-Cee Rhome says, "F Street will be teaming with bammas."
Much nicer will be the Homecoming Glamour Ball at Sports Club LA in the Ritz Carlton. Jazzman Marcus Johnson is performing, and the dress code is "glamorous." Tickets are $20 in advance; visit http://www.visualinvites.com/ for more information.
Hope this helps somewhat ...
20037:
Hi Gurus,
This is a two part question.
Fist I heard that there was some sort of thing going on today where the proceeds from the food (ie dinner) went to the world trace center victims? Know anything about it? Ie. who is participating?
Second what is the Bethesda Row arts fest? I heard something about that too and wanted to know when/where it was going to be held.
Thanks much
The Going Out Gurus: Hi 20037. This is Maura. I think the answer to the first half of your question can be found above. Check this record for the Bethesda Row Arts Festival lineup. There's a juried art show and lots of performances and - as with most things in Bethesda - I'd guess it's pretty family friendly too.
Arlington, Va:
Have any of you ever been to Mexicali Blues in Clarendon? The beer is good, they have Anchor Steam! But the food was beyond lousy. I wish I had read Phylis R's write up before I had wasted an hours wait on a table, for food that was worse than gruel. Don't let the decor or beer fool you. Stay away.
Your thoughts on the place?
The Going Out Gurus: Each to their own Arlington.
"Metro" Washington:
I'm a car-less Washingtonian who enjoys fall scenery and events (cider-sipping or apple-picking) that are usually located waaaaaaaaay out there in middle-of-nowhere VA/MD. Can you recommend any locations to watch or upcoming events that are accessible via public transport or have shuttles from Metro?
The Going Out Gurus: I feel for you, Metro. These lovely apple-picking orchards are usually nestled in bucolic fantasyland, because that's what makes them so pretty. I (Anne) tried really hard, but I hate to report even local bus routes rarely go down these rural routes. My best suggestion is to do a swap with a friend who has a car. Get your buddy to take you out apple picking, then you bake them an apple pie. If you have a bike, you can take your bike on Metro, and that can sometimes help you get closer to where you want to be. However, I only recommend this for Metro stations that aren't located on busy highways. If it's the pleasures of nature you're after, have you explored Rock Creek to it's fullest? The trails run from northern Rockville to Mount Vernon.
Washington, DC:
Can you recommend any good Chinese restaurants in VA or DC? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Alexa here. If by good you mean expensive as well as good, give Yanyu a go.
Alone this weekend:
My husband works this weekend and all of my friends have other plans. I don't want to stay in the house all weekend. I am not the type to feel comfortable mingling with a crowd of strangers. What are your favorite places to go when you are alone?
The Going Out Gurus: If you don't want to mingle, but you still want to feel like you're out and about, you can always go to the movies. I (Jen) like to take in a flick by myself every once in a while; there's something therapeutic about it. Have a glance at our movies page to find a film and showtimes; this week's new releases include Barry Levinson's "Bandits" and David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive." Also consider going to a museum (the aforementioned Impressionist exhibit at Phillips is a good choice) or wiling away the hours at a local bookstore. Search through our listing of book events to see if you can find a reading that interests you. Just make sure you relax and enjoy the time to yourself.
Arlington, Va.:
Hey gang,
How's it going, hope all is well.
I'm looking for a nice idea for a date in D.C., third time going out, something maybe intellectually stimulating -- perhaps art, theatre, or performance-related -- that would be fun and a little offbeat. A stroll through a museum or a gallery just isn't what I'm looking for, though. Sorry to be so vague, but I'd appreciate any help!
Thanks,
JM
The Going Out Gurus: Very well, thanks. Nice work JM, this is Kate, and I hear three times is a charm. You have plenty of stimulating options. Let's see if between us, we can find something really interesting and relatively inexpensive: At Dance Place, Richard Move "channels" Martha Graham in body, mind and spirit. DP, in conjunction with Washington Performing Arts Society, often books first class performance artists and this looks to be no exception. Tickets may be hard to come by, but I'm sure it's a good bet at $18 a piece. Matinee tickets for "Far East" at Studio are 20 percent off if you mention the "Be a Tourist in Your Own City" initiative. I saw the show and felt it too benign for the company, but The Post's Nelson Pressley was enthusiastic; Admission to the ever-lovely Phillips Collection is 2-for-1 on Sunday; and at Visions, Colin Nutley's movie "Under the Sun" makes it's local debut. The latter looks like a winner. If you'd like to get out of the city I recommend the horse races at Morven Park in Leesburg. Good luck. I'd be interested to hear what you do (and how it goes.)
Re: Apple Picking:
I recently went to Cherry Hill Farm in Clinton/Ft. Washington (PG County) and noticed on my way out that there was a Metrobus stop near (I think) Old Fort Road and Gallahan Road, only a mile or so away. I don't know the route number, but it's findable from WMATA. A big ordeal for apple picking, but do-able.
The Going Out Gurus: thanks apple-picker pro
Washington, D.C.:
Hey Gurus --
I'm sure there aren't any bars outside of Texas where Rice fans actually gather to watch the Owls, but as Rice is playing Navy this weekend, I figured we could find a good bar that shows Navy games. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington - this is Fritz. Head out to Annapolis, because as of today, tickets are still available for Saturday's game. It's Navy's homecoming weekend, and that's always fun, if a traffic nightmare. If the tickets are gone, go to the City Dock and grab a seat at Riordan's Saloon. If that's full, try Griffin's or O'Brien's.
Problem is, I haven't been able to find a broadcast schedule. Can anyone confirm that it's being televised? Really, your best bet is to call 1-800-US4-NAVY right now.
former WPNIer:
Thanks for the info on the Herndon Folk festival. As far as Jimmy's goes...it's been a favorite since I moved out here!
Thanks again. By the way, the new WPNI digs are awesome -- I was over there several months ago. Didn't see any barber shop quartets though.
The Going Out Gurus: Now the Jeannie's out of the bottle.
CP, MD:
A terribly vague question for you guys -- I always go to the same restaurants in DC. If you had to pick one place that was fun (as opposed to romantic), relatively cheap ($10 or so for an entree), good food, and right near the metro, what would it be?
The Going Out Gurus: Is this some kind of quiz, CP? This is Alexa and I might have to say the Austin Grill again, the one over near the Navy Memorial.
Arlington, VA:
Hey Guru's! Always love your advice.
I have a dilema, my old college roomate is cominf into town in two weeks and I was planning on going to Drag Bingo on the tuesday, since I have heard such good things about it. but that tuesday, the 23rd, is the same night as the high heel races! Which is the better party, or is there a way to do both?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington. Both are quite a scene, but as the High Heel Race happens only once a year, I (Maura) suggest it's a must-see. Plot well and you can grab a streetside table and enjoy. It does go by rather quickly - being a race and all - but be sure to grab a spot early. Maybe there's a chance your old roomie will make it into town another Tuesday for Drag Bingo. Let's hope so. Have fun.
Fairfax, Va:
When will they announce the ticket price for the United We Stand Concert on the 21st. Also, what time to tickets go on sale on friday?
The Going Out Gurus: Hello Fairfax, this is Joe and we still don't have an answer to either of your questions. I expected an announcement from Clear Channel this morning, but haven't heard anything yet. As soon as we know something, we'll post it on our site.
Somewhere, USA:
What are some good places to go for a rowdy birthday on a low budget in the District?
We're working with 20 somethings who refuse to believe life doesn't include kegs and cartoons on a daily basis.
The Going Out Gurus: Two words, Somewhere: Common Share. All drinks are $2 all the time, and you can't beat the low-rent atmosphere. Other cheapies: the all-you-can-drink specials at My Brother's Place and Recessions (both Saturday), or the late happy hours at Crush.
Other suggestions?
Arlington, VA:
For the club kid in Fairfax:
If what you're saying is that your tired of the kids at The Edge and Nation, and don't have the wardrobe or the wallet for Platinum, -heh-, try Club Five on Saturdays
The Going Out Gurus: We agree, Arlington.
Alexandria, VA:
Romantic? South Austin Grill? Are you nuts? If it's romance they want in Old Town, and reasonable prices, there are not a lot of options. My votes are for Cafe Marianna, Geranio, or Santa Fe East's tiny patio. South Austin is fine for drinks after dinner, but certainly not for dinner. Unless you're 19.
Mexacali Blues--thought food was okay. Not horrible, not great. Just your average crowded restaurant in Arlington. Why are there only ever lines at the very average restaurants, not the good ones? It makes me happy, but probably doesn't do the same for the restaurant owners.
The Going Out Gurus: I wouldn't call Santa Fe particularly reasonable, Alexandria, and have tended often to come away from Geranio feeling like I'd spent more that I'd expected. But yes, you are right: the South Austin isn't romantic.
Falls Church:
I know you've mentioned this before, but where can I find ghost tours and which are the good and spooky ones? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, FC. Two weeks ago, Rockville wrote in cast a vote for the Old Town ghost tour that starts at the Ramsay House Visitors Center, 221 King St., Alexandria, at 7:30 Friday-Sunday nights. It's $6 for adults, and you can line up to buy tickets 30 minutes before the tour starts. For superlative D.C. spooks, how about The Most Haunted Houses tour? You'll learn accounts of ghost sightings at the White House and Lafayette Square. This is Anne, and I hope you'll check back next week when we'll have a bigger list of ghost tours. Any boys and ghouls out there have a tip to share?
Arlington:
I'm really interested in Japone, the new restaurant below Cafe Japone. I stuck my head in once and thought it was the most most attractive place I'd seen in a while, but did not eat.
Anyone know?
The Going Out Gurus: What a timely question Arlington. We have not been, but I (Stacy) am going tonight and will let you know next week. And if you have a chance to pop in, write back and let us know.
DC:
I just wanted to let people know that Doug Smith, aka 95North is back at RED from a brief break (his wife had a baby). If you love deep, soulful house music, RED this Saturday night is the place to be.
I always try to make plans, but end up there!
The Going Out Gurus: thanks DC
Georgetown:
O.K. ready..Sports bars or bars to watch the many sports tonight which are metro accessable or walking distance from G-town other than Champs and the Rock. Go..
The Going Out Gurus: Grand Slam Sports Bar (Metro Center). MVPs (Gallery Place). Fanatics (Either of the Farraguts). Or the ESPN Zone, if you like crowds. I'm hoping they're showing the Maryland game at Georgetown Billiards, because I'll be there tonight, shooting pool (hopefully) with Mia Hamm and the Freedom.
Montgomery Village, Maryland:
Here's the website for Be A Tourist in Your Own Hometown. But it doesn't list the restaurants participating.
http://www.washington.org/frameset.html
The Going Out Gurus: thanks for the link
Annapolis Tourism Board again:
haha
I also wanted to say that here is a new bar in town that you all should check out - The Boatyard Bar and Grill in Eastport. It's a very fun, very laid back place - possibly en route to being the new Marmadukes, or just a completely cool thing on it's own.
I know Fritz is a big fan of Annapolis, so I thought I would pass on the word. Food's pretty good too.
The Going Out Gurus: voila
Tenleytown:
Three friends of mine (we're all 20) are visiting me here in DC Saturday night. We've all grown up in the suburbs and have done all of the touristy things there are to do around here. I want to come up with something new, exciting, and cheap to do Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Any ideas?
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, twenty in Tenley. I (Jen) have a couple of good ideas for you. On Saturday night, hit The Moustrap, a Brit pop dance party at the Black Cat. It's all ages, so no need to worry about not being over 21. On Sunday afternoon, assuming one of you has a car, consider driving out to Butler's Orchard in Germantown. Their Pumpkin Festival is happening every weekend in October: you can take a hayride, pick a pumpkin for your Halloween decorating needs, drink cider, run through a corn maze -- basically, have a good autumnal time. Both of these events are cheap, too -- the Pumpkin Fest charges $6 admission and the cover at Mousetrap is just $5.
Fairfax, VA:
To Arlington:
That was EXACTLY what I was trying to say. Thanks to you and the Gurus for the tips! Now I have somewhere to go this weekend!
The Going Out Gurus: that's what we were hoping for...
Alexandria, VA:
As I said, you don't have a lot of options when it comes to romance and reasonable prices in Old Town. Santa Fe doesn't cost any more than Geranio. And at Cafe Marianna, you can spend $20 or $8 on an entree. It's my favorite restaurant in Old Town.
The Going Out Gurus: more Old Town options
WDC:
I know it is still a little early, but are there any good / interesting New Years Eve ideas floating around DC? A smallish group of friends (6-10) want to get toegther for something less frantic than the crazy parties we normally do. Willing to try a restaurant. When do restaurants typically start advertising their dinner / ny eve deals?
The Going Out Gurus: Alexa and Fritz say that most restaurants and clubs won't start advertising their New Year's specials until at least Thanksgiving. We'll be sure to keep you posted as soon as we can. Please check back with us near holiday time for more details. Is there a particular cuisine your group fancies? Perhaps you can browse our recommended restaurants in D.C. and find one you'd like to try.
Alexandria:
A friend's coming into town, and bringing her 2-year-old daughter. Any ideas on stuff that's fun for us and the kid, aside from the usual zoo, etc.?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Alexandria. This is Maura. Have you seen Alexa's dining out with babes feature? After that why not take the wee one to the pumpkin patch or Strathmore Arts Center for Family Toon Day on Sunday, with live cartoon characters, concerts and puppet shows. Check back with us later today when we'll have more on this last event.
wdc03:
hey gurus - i'm hoping/thinking this question is within your broad range of expertise (at least fritz's): do you know anywhere can i get/purchase pumpkin beer in the district? the saveway has obviously failed me and i'm a big fan of the seasonal brew. thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, wdc03. This is Fritz (naturally). The absolute BEST pumpkin beer in the area is Nick Funnell's at Sweetwater Tavern, but Capitol City Brewing Company on New York Ave. will have a Pumpkin Ale on draft soon. I don't think it's available yet, though.
If you want to buy it to take home, I had some great stuff at Galaxy Hut, called (I think) Post Road Pumpkin Ale, or similar. Anyway, I saw it for sale at Fresh Fields, and Chevy Chase should have it as well.
Montgomery Village, Maryland:
Thanks for the info on windows of hope but I think the earlier poster was referring to the restaurant DISCOUNTS being offered this weekend to encourage everyone to go out and support the local restaurants and come downtown. It's tied into the Be A Tourist on Your Hometown promotion. Unfortunately I don't know which restaurants are participating but I did hear the same thing that various museums were going to be free, that normally charge and that restaurants were offering discounts. Perhaps you can look into this?
The Going Out Gurus: Monty, did I type too soon? There are three initiatives: Windows of Hope tonight, Dine for America (Outback Steakhouse, Maggiano's, Cinnabons) and the city-wide "Be A Tourist in Your Hometown." All encourage patronage. Truthfully, I've reviewed the restaurant discounts being offered this weekend and most are slim: a complementary drink with purchase of entree, but my best bet would have to be at the deal at the Occidental. Chef Patrick Bazin is launching his new three-course pre-theater menu by offering the $35 pre-fixe menu all night on Saturday. Furthermore, wear red, white and blue and receive a glass of 1997 Schramsberg sparkling wine -- Alexa tells that it has been served at many a White House dinner.
dc:
Isn't fanatics a strip joint not a sports bar?
The Going Out Gurus: Sort of, DC. There's a sports bar upstairs (that's Fanatics) and a strip club in the basement (Archibald's). You don't have to experience both if you don't want to.
RE: Alexandria:
We went to 219 and had a wonderfullly romantic and not to expensive dinner. The weather was just getting warm again and we sat on the outside patio and it was fantastic!
The Going Out Gurus: another option.
Arlington:
Hey Gurus! I'm headed out to see Ryan Adams at the 9:30 Club tomorrow night. Where is a good place to have some beers beforehand? We'd like something with only a short cab ride required.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Arlington. This is Fritz. The best beer selection on U Street is at the Saloon, which is only about four blocks from the club. Polly's, located another block down, has decent beers as well.
Washington, D.C: :
How does Fritz'liver handle all of this?
The Going Out Gurus: We have no idea. Nor does he. Nor, possibly, does the liver in question.
one more question please!:
Any suggestions of coffee shops along U street, a fun casual inexpensive not too crowded place to meet a new friend? Or in College Park?
The Going Out Gurus: These aren't coffee shops, but we always go to Polly's, the Saloon and Utopia to meet up, hang, talk. (Rhome and crew that is)
Harry Potter freak:
Hi!
I'm going to be Hermione for Halloween! Do you have any suggestions on good costume shops or thrift stores to check out? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi HPF. I (Maura) don't know anything about Harry Potter except I don't like howlers, but I do know that shopping editor extraordinaire Janet Bennett just updated her list of area costume shops. Here's hoping you find your Hermione.
Somewhere, USA:
For good pasta like pasta mia in Adams morgan go to San Marco on 18th st (above kokopooils) I always thought it looke dlike a dive, but I tried it and it was without a doubt the best italian I've had here. (From a born and bred Italian-American)
The Going Out Gurus: sounds like a treat.
New Englander in a strange land:
This is a question that only you guys could answer. My friends and I have been searching for candlepin bowling all summer long and haven't found a thing. So far we have found only the garden variety "big ball" bowling and a lot of strange looks. Do you guys know of any bowling alleys in the District that have both? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: Hello, NESL. This is Fritz. We don't have Candlepin in these parts. We have our own version, duckpin bowling, which was invented in Baltimore. It's very similar, although I'm told the balls are slightly heavier. You can find it at the AMF College Park Lanes, the Falls Church Bowling Center, and, our favorite, Tuffy Leeman's Glenmont Bowl in Wheaton. Let us know how it goes.
Arlington, Va.:
Hi there Gurus,
With baseball postseason again here, what are some good places to watch the games. Or even better, any New York Yankee fan hangouts? Thanks for a great column.
The Going Out Gurus: You know, Arlington, the last time I (Fritz) was surrounded by Yankees fans watching baseball was at the Cornerstone in College Park. UMD apparently has the highest concentration of New Yorkers of any university outside of the tri-state area, so I assume you'll find lots and lots of Jeter fans there. Champions in Georgetown also seems to have a lot of NY caps.
DC:
Question about the bar crawl on Sat.: if you don't pay the $10/$13 dollar fee, do you need to pay a cover to get into the participating bars? Or do you just miss out on the Bud special?
The Going Out Gurus: According to the organizers, you have to pay a $5 cover, DC. Sad but true.
Dupont Circle:
I've noticed the number of Fritz-oriented questions has diminished lately. To what to you attribute this? Has the fan club dissolved? Are the Women Who Adore Fritz (WWAFs) going underground?
Perhaps, Fritz, you should make an appearance at Mousetrap in something revealing... you get the love flowing again. Just a suggestion.
The Going Out Gurus: Ummmmmmmmmmm... I'm not sure how to answer this one, Dupont. But I'll be there. Maybe in a tailored suit. Who knows.
The Going Out Gurus:
thanks for all the q&a today. see you next week. same time, same place.
