Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, August 30, 2001; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We've got the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

The discussion ended at 2:30. The transcript is below.

The Going Out Gurus: Happy Thursday everyone. We gurus have been laboring day and night to bring you our new Entertainment Guide and all the latest D.C. doings. Of course, you've labored hard yourself and deserve the nice long weekend ahead. Our Labor Day Hot List is a steamer and we're fired up to answer all of your burning questions. It's one hot group that's gathered - Alexa (restaurants), Anne (events), Fritz (nightlife), Jen (theater and other happenings), Joe (music), Rhome (mr. jack-of-all-trades), Stacy (dating and other forms of recreation), and myself, Maura (museums and galleries) - so let's hear it.

Lorton, Va.: I have a friend visiting from the Czech Republic who would like to introduce me to Czech cuisine. Do you know of any restaurants specializing in this type of food? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: We don't Lorton, but let's hear from the folk at home. Can anyone help a friend out?

Tysons Corner, VA: I'm bummed that I can't make your chat today, so I'm submitting this question early... The boy and I want to do something unusual for the Labor Day weekend... not something generic like the beach or picnicing, and definitely something low-key (translation: not a lot of screaming children around.) We are open to all sorts of suggestions, as our interests are very broad. Oh and we're willing to day-trip. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, this is Anne, suggesting that your first stop for Labor Day info be our Labor Day Guide. Click on the "Recommended Labor Day Events" link for to find exactly that. Since a few of you were hunting for good ideas this weekend, I'm going to try to answer several questions at once. To those who want to avoid the traditional beach/cookout scenarios, consider the Canine Games Saturday morning. Besides the standard frisbee dog tricks, they're also demonstrating pet accupressure and massage and doggie baseball. Saturday night, the KanKouran West African Dance Company performs Saturday night as part of a week of events on African dance and drumming. There's also a slew of new plays opening at Source, Arena, Olney and the Shakespeare Theatre. To the person who asked about events on Sunday and Monday, here's one that will cover both days. The Back-to-School Bash at Nation starts at 9 and goes until dawn. The old-school Greenbelt Labor Day Festival (almost a mini-county fair) runs all weekend and has tennis and softball tournaments. Or, mellow out at the Labor Day Jazz Festival and Wine Tasting in Herndon Monday.

Washington DC: Hi Gurus. I read the story about the bars showing World Cup games this weekend, but I was wondering which one was showing the most matches, since they all seem to be charging $20.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. This is Fritz. When it comes to World Cup Qualifiers, the best value for money in the area is Summers. They're showing 10 matches for a $20 cover, including all the key European games and the US vs. Honduras.

The Rock has eight - their email said they had 14, but that's including the other "Soccer Nation" bars, and seeing them all involves some serious bar hopping. For example, they're showing France v. Chile at Lucky Bar. The upside is that there's no cover charge anywhere but the Rock. In Bethesda, Flanagan's is showing seven.

Despite the number of games at Summers, I'll be at the Rock all day - it's a much bigger space. Do say hello - I'll be the only person there wearing an Andrei Shevchenko shirt.

Arlington, Va.: Is there an online list of happy hours or happening places in D.C., Northern Virginia for each night of the week? It is hard to know what bars/clubs are good Sunday thru Wednesday.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Arlington. Bars and Clubs Editor Fritz here. Actually, there's a great list on our site. We've now partnered with OnTap, the local listings magazine, to bring you a searchable database of local happy hours. It's still a work in progress, but we have most of downtown DC and the close-in suburbs covered. Be sure to let us know what you think.

Fort Washington, Md.: A bunch of my friends from college are coming down tomorrow and we're planning for a guys night out. We're looking to have some pizza and beer at a place with an outdoor patio that we can people and women watch and meet women OF COURSE! Have any suggestions on where we can go?

Also, how would you describe the atmosphere at the Chi Cha Lounge?

THANKS!

The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like quite a night Fort W. You might take a gander at our roundups of outdoor bars in Adams Morgan, Bethesda,
and Georgetown.
For women-watching, I (Stacy) don't think you can beat the Washington Harbour. Try Tony and Joe's or Seqouia.

If you're looking for a more laid back crowd, you might hit the Deck or the Rox. And you can read our review of Chi Cha here.

Gaithersburg, Md.: A group of friends and I are planning a night in September for a friends 24th birthday. We are looking at Bethesda since we are spread throughout NoVa and Maryland.
We are looking for a nice but not too expensive dinner and then something to do afterwards other then scream at each other in a noisy bar. Can you help? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Gburg, this is Jen. I think your best Bethesda bet is to find a parking spot in the Bethesda and Woodmont Aves. area and choose from one of the many fun restaurants nearby. Consider Jaleo, Austin Grill, Levante's, Raku, Thyme Square or, down Bethesda Ave., Tara Thai or Centro.
Afterwards, you can retire to Chrome, the new lounge next door to the soon-to-reopen Lewie's. I hung out there recently and, though the drinks are too expensive, it's a decent place to sit and chat with friends. On weekend nights, it may be rather crowded, though, so keep that in mind. Other post-dinner options: grab coffee at Xando or at the Starbucks inside Barnes & Noble, or have some beers at Parker's, which, if you can get a decent table, should allow you to talk without permanently damaging your vocal chords.

Arlington, VA: My boyfriend is back from a long trip for work and we'd like to go to dinner this weekend somewhere romantic with an outside eating area so we can enjoy one of the last weekends of summer. I remember the Roma on Connecticut Ave used to have a backyard with a romantic ambiance, vines weaving all about... something like that.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington, Alexa here and ready to recommend Chef Geoff's which we say has the best outdoor dining in the city. Twinkly white lights, trees and a pleasant menu. You love birds will enjoy it there, I think.

Alexandria, VA: There are a lot of great bakeries in the DC area that sell pastries and other deserts but are there any places (other than Krispy Kreme) that sell a wide varietiy of good donuts?

The Going Out Gurus: Besides Krispy Kreme? My ears are still ringing from the last time Fritz bellowed that there is no comparison. Yes, we in the Entertainment Guide have a special fondness for that Route 1 standby. They must be hot, of course. And who else has that kind of selection? However, Fritz has tried the donuts at Americk's (pastry bakery) and "they're pretty good. Expensive, but good." This is Anne, and I'd say you could also hold out for apple picking season next month and head to Cherry Hill Farm in Prince George's County -- I can eat way too many apple cider donuts.

Arlington, Va.: Do you know of a cool casual restaurant in Annapolis where you can get good crabs -- that isn't super expensive? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington. This is Maura. If you are headed to Annapolis for crabs, I think you can't beat Cantler's. If that doesn't fill you up, keep in mind the Maryland Seafood Festival is next weekend.

Waldorf, Md.: Are there any good after hours bars in the DC area?

The Going Out Gurus: After Hours bars, Waldorf? Do you mean ones that keep serving after last call, or ones that stay open all night? The former are illegal, so I (Fritz) certainly couldn't tell you about those. I have a list of late-night options here, but they're mostly clubs and not bars.

New York, N.Y.: Any traditional jazz clubs you can recommend?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello NY, NY. This is Joe and I assume you mean in DC, so I've got three recommendations for you. Blues Alley, in Georgetown, is DC's best known jazz spot, but you can also check out the newly relocated Twins Lounge which has moved to U Street. Also on U St. is Bohemian Caverns which opened last year. All of these places are worth a visit, but Blues Alley will probably draw the biggest names, if that's what you're looking for.

Montgomery Village, Md.: A girlfriend and I (also female) are going out for a girls night out. My friend's eight months pregnant and just wants to get out. Do you have any suggestions for a Sunday night out?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Montgomery Village, Jen here. I empathize with this dilemma since a number of my female friends also seem to be jumping on the baby train.
If you don't want to venture too far from Montgomery Village, you could head over to Market Square at the Kentlands and have dinner at O'Donnell's or The Star Diner. Afterwards, you could catch a movie at Kentlands Stadium 8. You could also do the same sort of thing at Washingtonian Center: have a meal at Rio Grande perhaps, then stroll over to the Rio movie theater to catch a flick.
Of course, if your friend wants to do something a little more active, you could always take her to Dave and Buster's in North Bethesda. Since you're doing this on a Sunday, it should be less crowded, which means you'll have no trouble stepping up to an empty skeeball lane. And to my best recollection, the second-hand smoke situation is pretty minimal there.
Have fun.

Alexandria, Va.: Hi gurus. A fellow single girlfriend and I (both 29) are looking for ideas on places we can go out and meet some eligible men during the middle of the week. Given our ages we're interested in slightly more upscale ideas where a mid-30's crowd might hang out and we can avoid the college kids. We'd be interested in dancing, billiards, or just hanging out in a fun place. Anywhere in D.C. or NoVA would work for us. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Alexandria. I (Stacy) have a couple of suggestions, but you let me know if the eligible men at these locales meet your standards. Cafe Citron and McCormick and Schmick's make for fun, somewhat upscale happy hours. And while they're not quite upscale, you might have fun shooting pool at Atomic or Bedrock Billiards.

In NoVa, you might try Clarendon Ballroom (though I'm not sure what the average age is there these days), or Gaffneys in Ballston is attracting a slightly older crowd than Carpool.

Bethesda, MD: What's up with the link to the Maryland Seafood Festival? Not much information there, as in when, where, cost, etc.

Can you recommend a spot downtown to have a picnic? A grill would be nice but not necessary.

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry, Bethesda. I can tell you it's next weekend. We're working on the record and will have more information there this afternoon.

22201: Hi gurus,

Love your wonderful advice, and am hoping you can help this North Arlingtonian with a question.

I'm considering buying a bike, but would like to rent one and try it out on local trails first. Are there any trails that are ideal for beginners (relatively flat, not super-crowded, away from traffic is ideal!) that I should try out? I'm thinking Custis Trail, the canal trail in Georgetown, the GW Parkway. I've also heard that there are a couple places near the monuments where you can rent bikes.

Any ideas would be much appreciated--thanks!

PS Hung out at Whitlow's last night--they have great jazz after 10 pm...!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey 22201. I (Stacy) think you are talking about "Bike the Sites." These 3-hour bike tours allow you to practice your pedaling while learning about our lovely monuments. Enjoy.

Arlington, Va.: Hey all...
I am going to Guys and Dolls tonight at Wolf Trap and just wondering what you'd recommend to eat around there. I'm a Wolf Trap first-timer, and was also wondering how formal/casual it was... Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: So, luck's going to be your lady tonight? To answer the last part of your question first, I (Jen) think you'll be fine in casual wear at Wolf Trap. You can might want to wear khaki pants instead of shorts, but generally people don't get decked out at Wolf Trap because it's a less formal setting and, if you're sitting on the lawn, you don't want to get grass stains on your dressy slacks. A suit, or even a tie, is certainly not necessary
As for where to eat, I'd suggest you hit a place in Tysons, maybe Busara or one of the many spots in Tysons II (Daily Grill, Legal Seafood, etc.) Your other option is to eat at Wolf Trap itself - you can pre-order a catered, boxed supper. I don't know if you can still do so in time for tonight, but if that interests you, give it a try. Hope you enjoy the show.

Centreville, VA: Hi Gurus! Love your chats. Submitting early because of a meeting: a friend of mine, who I haven't seen in nearly two years, is coming down this weekend for a spontaneous (i.e. we planned it yesterday) visit. Do you have any ideas for someplace we can have dinner (either Saturday or Sunday night)? We eat just about anything, so cuisine isn't a concern: we're looking for somewhere that won't break the bank, somewhere that's not too loud (so we can talk) and that won't hurry us along once we're done eating - we have a lot to catch up on and would really like to be able to relax over drinks. Or would we be better off eating somewhere and doing the post-dinner drinks elsewhere (though preferably closeby)? Any ideas for places that would fit these requirements? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Centerville, Alexa here. You don't really say where you want to be. Alexandria? DC? Have you heard about the new Majestic in Old Town? I don't think it'll break the bank and there's a bar (though a bit noisy) for afterwards. Or you could walk along to the Xando chain for a cocktail and a lounge afterwards. But other ideas? Our Maura likes to suggest Peter's Passion in Dupont for somewhere quiet.

Severna Park, Md.: Where does a single woman go to meet people?

The Going Out Gurus: SP: You might try any one of these places.

Brattleboro VT: Tell me more about the "Godfather of Go
Go" Chuck Brown's birthday bash. Will
Trouble Funk be showing up? How about
EU? I hear special guests are planned.

The Going Out Gurus: This is Rhome and I have to ask in all seriousness, do you really need special guests for the good Chuck birthday jont? I have heard confirmations of L'il Benny and James Funk being there. And being that this is his special day, and his live record (a show which I attended and saw Trouble Funk rip, Hey T-Bone!) has been doing well, it's almost guaranteed that other old heads will stop in to show love. Meet me at the go-go, and make sure you got your happy feet together.

Fairfax, Va.: Where is the hot spot for dancing in the district on Saturday night? Or maybe top three?

The Going Out Gurus: Hotspots change like the wind, Fairfax. Right now, I (Fritz) would recommend M3 night at Club 5 for House devotees, the Z104 parties for those who like top 40/house/trance (these rotate between Platinum, Lulu's and the Shark Club), Insomnia for trance, and either the Saint or Moro Cafe for the hip-hop or salsa.

Dupont: Thank you for your tips on my trip to Philly last weekend. I followed them and had a really great time. Reading Terminal rocks!
Another puzzle... I am looking for a weekend retreat somewhere in Virginia. Probably a cabin rental or someplace. Where can I go and find a really cheap place for four people and enjoy the outdoors, but also have some civilization nearby?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Dupont. This is Maura. Our friend and Philly native Kim O'Donnel says "you're welcome" and suggests a a look at a Luray, Va. write up for cabin information and a peek at our escape plans index for more ideas. Have fun.

alexandria, va: here's a strange question:

where's a good spot to lay on top of your car and watch planes land right over your head? (can you tell i just watched wayne's world?) i was thinking of gravelly point but they close at dusk, apparently. do they really enforce that, and if so, where else can i go? sounds fun on a nice summer night.
thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Gravelly Point is definitely the number one choice. I've been there playing soccer on the fields as it's getting dark, and I haven't noticed any uniformed heavies telling everyone to clear out. In general, though, it's not a good idea to be in parks in the dark, which is why the Park Service sets the hours they do. Best to enjoy Gravelly Point in the twilight. Another choice for planespotting is at the 94th Aero Squadron, a College Park bar that's popular with the students and sits near the College Park Airport.

Arlington, Va.: Love your reviews, now I need some assistance. Do you have a suggestion for a happy hour place in NW for a small group of late 20's women still wearing their work clothes? We sometimes like Old Ebbit, but need a bit of variety. Happy hour food specials greatly appreciated.

The Going Out Gurus: You can check out all the happy hour specials in the city here.

And as I recommended for some other chatters, I (Stacy) like Café Citron and McCormick & Schmicks for happy hours downtown. You won't feel overdressed there.

Fairfax,VA: Is Modern free for ladies till 10? It's something i heard but wasnt sure....what's it like?Big, small, stuffy, seating? THanks!!
Love you guys!!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Fairfax. Fritz here. Modern is free for everyone until 9:30 on Fridays and Saturdays, and then charges $10. It's relatively small, there's not a lot of seating, and it's very trendy, with a dress code, expensive cocktails and lots of good-looking people. But it can also be a lot of fun, and it's easily the best club in Georgetown.

McLean, VA: This might be a stretch, but do any of you know the woman Cecilia performing at Iota tonight? I'm getting dragged there with a group and am curious as to who she is/what type of music, etc.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi McLean, this is Joe and Cecilia is actually a local band, not an individual. They are all in the same family, mom, dad, kids and they play a mix of poppy folk and rock. Have fun.

Springfield, Va.: Hi there, I've just returned from two weeks in 'muy tranquil' Panama and am NOT ready to resume my D.C. life just yet. Is there anyplace around here (besides my house) where I can relax in a hammock with a cold beer? Or what about live calypso music? I need that 'just chillin' out' island life...
Thanks!
La Langosta ('the lobster' -- sun is strong down there)

The Going Out Gurus: You can recapture your island memories at two area bars, Springfield, although neither has a hammock. This is Fritz, and I, too, wish I was lolling around on a beach - only the Cap d'Antibes instead of the Caribbean.

Anyway, the Crossroads in Bladensburg is a meeting place for the local Caribbean community, and they play excellent calypso there in Thursdays and Fridays, with reggae, dancehall and hip-hop the rest of the week. Great drink specials, too. Your other option is Island Jim's Crab Shack and Tiki Bar in Brookland, where they have a sandy area and palm trees. The drinks are sweet and strong with rum.

Anybody out there know of a bar with a hammock?

Silver Spring, Md.: Couple in mid-20's looking for a place to go dancing that is not a meat market, that does not play techno or house and mainly plays top 40 and 80's music.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Silver Spring. Well, if it's 80s music you're looking for, I'd try Club Heaven tonight. It's Rock Lobster night, the end of summer bash, which should be B52-riffic. Also take a look at this round-up I (Jen) compiled about '80s dancing. If you like alternative '80s and '90s music, hit Panic on Friday nights at Metro Café - went there last week and had a blast. It's an interesting crowd and definitely not a meat market.
You might also try Chief Ike's - its market can tend toward the meaty side at times, though definitely not nearly as much as Lulu's or Polly Esther's (at least in my experience).

Washington, DC: hi gurus,
i'm looking for a pottery studio in the adams morgan or dupont area. i took classes in college so i know how to throw but its been a couple years. i'd prefer to pay for studio time and materials, not classes while i get back into the swing of things. can you help me out? i'm also on a tight budget. thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi DC. Our staff pottery expert takes classes at Hinckley Pottery in Adams Morgan. good luck!

Arlington, Va: I have several friends in town tomorrow night. My sister, her boyfriend and two other guy friends. I want to take them out to a fun restaurant and bar. There's a party we can go to after dinner, but then I want to take them out to a fun bar in Adams Morgan. Any suggestions on a moderately priced restaurant and fun bar? We like all foods.

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, Alexa here. I'm going out on a limb here recommending somewhere I've yet to go. But the idea's nifty and I like it. What about going to Adams Morgan's newMeze which would fulfill all your needs -- bar and restaurant.

Dupont: I know you have answered this before, but please please please, once again. How do I find out about the galleries in Dupont that participate in First Friday? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Dupont. Nearly all the galleries in Dupont participate in First Friday. That's next Friday for the calendar-impaired. Check out our list of Dupont Galleries and map a route for yourself. Gallery K, Robert Brown and Marsha Mateyka are good bets. America Oh, Yes! just relocated. Check it out and let me (Maura) know what you think.

fairfax, va: Hello Gurus! Love your chat...so much useful info. I recently heard about this lounge/bar called Andalu. Is it any good? What's the atmosphere? Good music? It sounds very cool, but I'm a little curious as to why I haven't heard of it before. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Rhome again, and I was once ignorant of Andalu until I played there myself. I've been back to play a couple of times and we've had a ball there. The drinks are kind of pricey but the vibe is laid back, the decor is nice and the music is tight. Taha is the resident there and plays soulful house, he is also one half of T-Kolai, the other half consisting of a live reedman/flautist riffing over the house grooves. Check capitolvibes.com and districtsoul.com for samples of what they do and event schedules. They usually have something going every night. Tell 'em DJ Stylus sent you.

College Park, MD: I'm going to Colonial Williamsburg, VA and Busch Gardens this Labor Day weekend. Any thoughts/advice about how to deal with the (I'm assuming) tons of tourists also heading in this general area and how to deal with this once there AND any advice about the drive down from DC to this area? We're leaving Friday afternoon too. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, College Park. As a former William & Mary student, I (Jen) have made the drive to Williamsburg more times than I can count. Unfortunately, there's only one direct route to take: 95 South, to 295, to Interstate 64. You're likely to hit the worst traffic at the dreaded mixing bowl interchange, getting onto 95 South near Springfield. If you're leaving tomorrow afternoon, all I can tell you is stay calm and bring good CDs with you. Hopefully the trip won't be too bad, at least not as crowded as the one over the Bay Bridge.
As far as dealing with tourists once you're there, I suggest walking to as many places as you can, assuming your hotel is in the colonial area. Also, try hitting restaurants and shops at somewhat off beat times. If you can do early dinners, do them. If you can get to Busch Gardens early in the day, that might be wise, too. Lastly, if you happen to hit Paul's Deli (and you certainly should) have a Hot Holly for me.

Washington, DC : What can you tell me about Fluid on U St.

The Going Out Gurus: Fluid opened a few weeks ago, Washington, and is owned by the guys who brought the Rendezvous Lounge to 18th Street. It's a basement-level club that, when packed, feels like you're at a party in a friend's basement. I (Fritz) have been, and had mixed feelings about the place. I liked the cool little nooks and spaces, but hated the pool table in the middle of the room.

Anyway, it's the subject of Nightwatch in tomorrow's weekend section, so you can read what Eric Brace thinks about it.

Arlington, VA!: Hey Gurus, I'm originally from Annapolis and looking for a good place to get steamed crabs for labor day without going over the bridge to MD. What are some good places in VA to pick up a bushel for the weekend?
Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington. Alexa again. Try Maine Avenue Wharf which isn't VA of course, but it's a quick hop across to DC. Or else Ernie's Crab House in Alexandria?

Arlington, VA: QUICK HELP NEEDED!!

We are supposed to meet friends at the Hotel Washington tonight for drinks at the outdoor lounge. I assume the hotel has a dress code- is it more casual in the lounge? Thanks so much- love the chats!

The Going Out Gurus: There's no dress code at the Hotel Washington that I (Fritz) have seen, Arlington. It's mostly an after-work/professionally-dress crowd, but I've seen tourists in *shudder* Tevas sipping cocktails up there.

DC: Hey Gurus! Happy long weekend!

I'm going to Dewey Beach for the first time with some friends. Can you tell me about it? What are the "don't miss" restaurants/bars in Dewey? (btw, I already checked out your Beach Guide online - I want insider tips, please!)

The Going Out Gurus: Have you checked out our guide to nightlife in Dewey and Rehoboth? As for restaurants, stick with greasy boardwalk food and you can't go wrong. I never leave those beaches without stopping in at Nicola's in Rehoboth.

Washington, D.C.: Industrial music club?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. The is Fritz. You need to make your way to the mega-dance club 2:k:9 tonight (as unlikely as that sounds) for Alchemy and Nocturnia, the biggest goth/industrial event in Washington. They had been throwing their events at the Cage, but the impending transformation of that club into Black Cat South meant they had to find a new home. Check http://www.alchemy-dc.com for updates on their upcoming events.

Fairfax: We're planning on going to the NSO concert on Capitol Hill this Sunday evening. Is one allowed to bring a bottle of wine to such events?

The Going Out Gurus: hello Fairfax. the general consensus here is that one is not allowed to bring a bottle of wine or any other alcohol for that matter on the Mall. People seem to do it anyway, but we're pretty sure it's illegal.

Metropolitan, DC: craft shows

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Metropolitan! (See how nice a greeting can be?) Anyway, for a craft show, I (Maura)would try the Labor Day Art Show at Glen Echo with plenty of fine art and crafts to suit you.

Washington, D.C.: I've never been to a poetry slam, and I've been meaning to check out Sunday nights at Iota. What's it like? Is it hokey, fun, or a little of both? My only point of reference is Mike Myers in "So I Married An Axe Murderer."

The Going Out Gurus: I (Rhome) have never been there but Fritz says it's "pretty weak". If I were to recommend one poetry event, it would be the DC National Slam Team's regular night at Teaism.

Washington, DC: In a blinding whirlwind of packing boxes, about half my friends moved out of town in the past couple of months. Ergo, I need to meet folks (preferably in the late 20's age range and in NoVA/DC, like me). Sign-up sports, theater groups, synchronized bungie-jumping. Whatever. If you're willing to list it, I'm willing to try it.

The Going Out Gurus: I (Stacy) feel your pain DC. Many friends seem to have skipped town this summer. You can always check out some of the ideas we listed in our handy Meeting New People guide--you might like choose to volunteer or try a rock climbing gym. Did you notice the list of cooking lessons in yesterday's Food section? Seems they're a great place make new friends.

Ellicott City, Md.: Looking for fun things to do with a 1 1/2 year old, outdoors. Can't keep her still inside anymore...

Thanks Gurus!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, this is Anne, and I'm trying to think of places where she can stretch her legs and you can be entertained, too. Fort McHenry in Baltimore has a light-up map of the battle and she was toddle around the fort itself. Cider Mill Farm in Elkridge (410/788-9595) opens for the season on Sept. 8 -- they have hay rides, pony rides and a petting zoo. And for some great outdoors scenery, consider a drive west to Cunningham Falls State Park. Be sure to take the stroller-friendly path to the view.

chevy chase, md: want to take the boyf on a picnic on saturday. any recommendations - would love to be able to do a hike to a quiet spot. thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: hey Chevy Chase, handily enough we have a picnicking guide to make your life a little easier.

Washington, DC: I am looking for suggestions on places in the DC area to have both a wedding and reception. We are on a budget and are having a hard time finding unique spaces that do not cost an arm and a leg.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. This is Jen and I feel your pain. I recently planned my wedding and I almost upchucked on more than one occasion when I realized how expensive it is to plan a wedding around here.
For the most part, spots in the city are more expensive than places in Maryland or Virginia, so you might want to keep that in mind.
I'm not sure what your budget is, but if you're trying to do the wedding and reception in the same spot, consider Woodend in Chevy Chase. All right, I'm a little biased since I got married here, but it's such a special place and many of our guests complimented us on the beauty of the setting. It's still somewhat pricy, yet less expensive than a lot of the other primo spots in the area. (Plus, if you have a day wedding versus evening, you'll save a good amount of money.) In short, you might spend an arm here, but at least you'll keep your leg.
Other spots to consider: you can actually host a reception at the Barns at Wolf Trap, which is out of the ordinary and, if I remember correctly, not terribly expensive. Also look into the rental facilities owned by the Montgomery, Prince George's and Fairfax County parks. Some of the spots are charming and not expensive at all.
Last advice: there's a book about wedding sites in the Washington area that probably would be a good resource. Of course I'm blanking on the name, but if you ask at your local bookstore, I'm sure they can track it down for you. Best of luck.

Arlington, VA: Fritz--this is outside the DC area, but do you know of any bars in the Pittsburgh area that might be showing the Ireland match on Saturday? The only bar that I can find in town that shows soccer is doing Scotland v. Croatia instead. Help!

The Going Out Gurus: I'm not going to say you owe me, Arlington, but here's one spot whose Web site says they're showing the match:

Piper's Pub
1828 East Carson Street
Pittsburgh, PA 15203
Phone: 412/381-3977
Internet: http://www.piperspub.com

Cheers.

Marylander: There used to be a jazz club in Bethesda but it went out of business a while back. Any alternatives in the Maryland burbs?

The Going Out Gurus: hello MD-er. This is Joe and I don't know of any jazz clubs in suburban Maryland. Can any readers help out with this?

Arlington, VA: About 2-3 weeks ago, you were kind enough to tell us about a charm/etiquette school in Baltimore. Is there a similar type of institution in the DC area?

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington: We were unable to find a similar place in the D.C. area and, unfortunately, I can't even seem to find that Baltimore link to repost.
Any help from our fellow chatters on this one? Anyone? Bueller?

Washington, DC: What's the best beach for families in the area?

The Going Out Gurus: Definitely Bethany Beach. Here's our Beach Guide.

Alexandria, VA: Fritz-I was checking out your guide to watching soccer in the D.C. area, and if I recall correctly, you said that the FA Cup is the "Super Bowl" of the English Premier League. Were you drunk when you wrote this? It's nothing like the Super Bowl. Why do you have to compare it to any American sporting event? It's not like any American sporting event.

The Going Out Gurus: You're right, Alexandria. It's nothing like it - except that it's a single elimination tournament and draws the largest television audience of the year for a single match. But you do have to dumb things down for Americans who may not be familiar with what the F.A. Cup and what it is. It's all about cultural context. Would I say that to someone if I was standing on the North Bank at Highbury? No. Would I make that comparison if I was trying to explain it to someone who isn't familiar with European football? Yes.

20005: Flea Markets:

I know we've got Georgetown Flea market and Eastern Market.

1. Are this Sunday only affairs?
2. Are there other around besides this two?

The Going Out Gurus: This is Jen, and if you want the whole flea dilly (not to be confused with P. Diddy), take a look at this story. It gives you all the info on Georgetown, Eastern Market and flea fun in Bethesda, Columbia and Arlington.

Arlington, VA: My girlfriend is coming to town tomorrow and I was planning on taking her to dinner for her birthday. I need some help in finding a nice romantic spot (preferably an Italian place) somewhere in Georgetown or Downtown. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The Going Out Gurus: Romantic and Italian? I suppose we usually recommend Al Tiramisu on P. But I (Alexa) always tend toward the idea that anywhere can be romantic if the company's right. How's about Etrusco, Vivo?

Logan's Circle: Hey,

What's the full scoop on the Black Cat changing locations??

thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: hi Logan's Circle, this is Joe and I don't know about the full scoop, but word is that if all goes according to plan, by the middle of the month shows at the Black Cat will move a few doors down the street to what is now the Cage at 1811 14th St., NW. We'll keep an eye on this and let you know if anything changes.

Arlington, VA: Fritz-Piper's Pub are the morons who are showing Scotland get thrashed by Croatia instead of Ireland hopefully not get thrashed by the Dutch.

Anyone?? Help me!

The Going Out Gurus: Really, Arlington? That sucks. Their Web site says that they're showing all the Setanta matches, including Ireland-Holland. So, let's open this up to the readers and see if anyone knows.

hmmmm, dc: where could a guy find a nice bar/club where its easy to pick up girls, and take them back to your own private club?

The Going Out Gurus: Finally, Austin Powers has joined our chat.

Rockville: You guys Rock! I'd like to rent a small boat this weekend to do some cruising around the Chesapeake Bay area, but the internet seems to only lead me to large charter boats! I would like to rent from Annapolis or Solomon's Island. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Hmm Rockville. We're having some trouble finding boat rentals. Lots of tour boats and cruise-ships, and kayak and canoe rentals, though. Does anyone else have any ideas for this captain without a ship?

Washington,DC: With the NFL regular season fast approaching, can you recommend a few places are great for watching some football on the tube. I am a MN native and am especially interested in Viking friendly places..especially with a Monday Night game against the Ravens upcoming.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. This is Fritz, and I'm still working on this story - a lot of bars haven't finalized their game-day deals and specials yet, but I should have something up next week.

Now, as for the Vikings, as of last season, Viking fans were gathering at Willy K's in Greenbelt and Fast Eddie's in Fairfax. Any Purple People Eaters want to suggest another venue?

Virgina Weend: For the person looking to get away in Virginia, you can rent an a-frame house on the grounds of Burnley Vineyards near Charlottesville. It's called Fernando’s Hideaway. It's cheap with it's own kitchen and beautiful views. There are other great wineries around as well.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, VW!

DC: For the wedding question, there is a book called Unique Meeting and Wedding Places in Washington that has most of those places in it. An indepensable guide, though some of the rates have been increased since publication.

The Going Out Gurus: Another good tip, D.C.

Washington DC: I'm looking for a watering hole in town (Adams Morgan, Mt. Pleasent would be nice) with a Foosball table. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. This is Fritz. Off the top of my head, the closest foosball tables to you would be the ones at Bistrot du Coin in Dupont and Garrett's in Georgetown.

Fairfax: A friend of mine is coming down for the weekend - she arrives by train at Union Station on Friday night at 9:45. Are any of the Union Station restaurants (or other restaurants in the area) open then? I'm sure she'll be famished. Where would you go?

The Going Out Gurus: I (Alexa) suppose at that hour, Fairfax, I'd go to Cap City Brewery for something easy like a sandwich and a brew. No muss, no muss. Out of Union Station, across the road and you're in. Of course, there's always B Smith's, too.

Vienna, VA: I'm trying to do something with my wife (we don't have kids yet) that is fun, doesn't involve throngs of people, and won't cost a lot of money. Help, please!

The Going Out Gurus: Oh, Vienna, you and your extraordinarily general question. This is Jen, and I'm positive there are oodles of things you and your wife can do together that won't cost much or involve major crowds. Without knowing exactly what your interests are, may I suggest that you play tennis at one of these courts? Or perhaps you could go canoeing or tubing.
Not outdoorsy? Pick an exhibit and venture to a museum (click around on this page to find something you like).
Or just set aside an afternoon and spend your time walking around a neighborhood you don't often visit, like Old Town Alexandria, U Street, Georgetown or Bethesda. Who knows what funky stores or intimate coffee shops the two of you might find?

Washington, DC: concert or recitals

The Going Out Gurus: The question is a little vague (so vague it might not officially count a question), but here's a link to our music page that will hopefully help you out.

Arlington, VA: Hello Gurus. I need your help!! I am turning 24 next week and I was planning on celebrating next Friday, but I am coming a blank. Last year I threw a big bash at the new Ozio's but the budget is a little smaller this year. Can you suggest a club that will have a big enough table for us, good dancing music and a bill less than $700.00?

The Going Out Gurus: How many people are coming, Arlington? Depending on your group size, you might want to consider Chi-Cha Lounge (they have a great space in the back that can be curtained off) or the Blue Room - if you can get the loft. If you're a fan of lounges (and your group is small), call Modern and see about one of their small VIP booths.

Falls Church, Va.: For the third week in a row, I will be missing the cavalcade of interactive wit that is the "Got Plans?" love fest. I’m so bummed, but I do like to hit the transcripts afterwards to see what new cool ideas you have and how many questions about bachelorette parties you answer. I also wanted to follow up with an answer and a question (submitted early).

Regarding last weeks question about lists of vineyards in the tri-states, I prefer
http://www.virginiawines.org/wineries/index.html
for Virginia and
http://www.marylandwine.com/
for Maryland; can’t help with Delaware.

We haven’t actually managed to make it into Maryland, although I’m very curious about Linganore, which had scheduled some Reggae Days over the summer. Nearby, on the Virginia side, Linden is beautiful and makes some very good wines, while Loudoun County has a “wine trail.” http://www.rural-loudoun.state.va.us/wine_trail.htm
For views of the river, try Tarara; and Willowcroft gives a very nice mountain view from their barn ... Maybe I know a dangerous bit too much about Virginia Wines.

My follow-up question: A few weekends ago, quite by accident, we discovered a less used entrance into the Shenandoah National Park, a little North-west of Charlottesville. (Yeah, yeah, yeah; it was down the road from a vineyard http://www.oakencroft.com). It was nice, not just because they didn’t collect a fee, but more importantly, the decreased foot traffic. I think we met two hikers, one family and a dog on our way to a very dried out waterfall.

So I am wondering what other roads less traveled you guys can recommend for the moderate day-hiker. (and by moderate, I mean 2-4 hours on the trail).

jandy

The Going Out Gurus: thanks for all the info falls church. For more out-of-the-way hiking, you might have to travel a little further, but Calvert Cliffs State Park should be worth the drive. Let me (Stacy) know what you think.

Washington, DC: I'm planning a laid-back, dinner-and-drinks birthday party next week. I'd like to go someplace fun and unique -- maybe something like fondue, but more sanitary. The ideal place will be in DC and near other going-out options, in case people feel like extending the evening. Any suggestions??

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Alexa here. For fondue there is of course the Melting Pot over in Ballston. But if you're after the communal thing and are keen for something a bit different, why not hink about Meskerem, a great Ethiopian in Adams Morgan that's well-situated for other going out options.

Reston, VA: I want to do something romantic on the weekend of Sept.28. we are celebrating our 4 years together. I want to send a moderate amount, not something to fancy. We were think of seeing a play or something. Any suggestion?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Reston, Jen here. Play-wise, you could try getting tickets for Arena Stage's production of "Eleanor: Her Secret Journey," which opens that week and stars Jean Stapleton as Eleanor Roosevelt.
It's a bit of a haul, but Olney Theatre's production of Tom Stoppard's "The Real Thing" will be wrapping that weekend. Tickets aren't too expensive and the play definitely has a romantic theme.
If you want to be even more moderate in your spending, you could see a free performance at Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, then maybe venture over to Dominique's to spend your dough on dinner or dessert.

Takoma Park, MD: Best places to hit with a group of early 30s architects and designers from Boston and NYC?

The Going Out Gurus: Your friends might appreciate the following:
The '60s lounge influences of the furnishings at Modern, the uber-hip clientele at 18th Street Lounge, the brilliant architectural rennovation of the Gordon Biersch Brewery, the design exhibits at Kitchen K on U Streets ... any other ideas from our readers?

Annapolis: Hey gurus, thanks for all your nifty advice. My hubby and I are getting together with some old friend this Sunday and would like to do something outside. They have a dog which they would like to bring along. Any ideas? By the way, canoeing is out (booked up). I'd like to do something different and am at a loss. We're willing to make a day trip! Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: How about a little trip to Harpers Ferry? I (Stacy) would suggest tubing, but the pooch might not approve. You could go for a hike/picnic along the Maryland Heights Trail instead. The trail is dog-friendly.

Arlington, VA: Fritz-FYI. Just called Pipers. Definitely not showing Ireland match, because more people were interested in the Scotland match. People in Pittsburgh need to get a life. Pipers and some bar in Philly are the only 2 bars in PA that show soccer. Sad. I'm sure we could find plenty of bars featuring professional wrestling or NASCAR.

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry again, Arlington. But I'll tell you what - if Ireland get a result, and you're back in town on Monday, you should stop by Summers. They're rerunning the Ireland and England matches on Monday with no cover, starting at 4:00pm with Ireland.

Woodley Park: Hi Gurus! I hope I get this in in time.... I have a Japanese friend who just arrived at Georgetown to study abroad for a year... she's never been to Washington and I want to be a good hostess and take her around. What, besides the obvious MALL, should I take her to see and eat? I was thinking the Mall -- then lunch around there (where?); then another day the zoo and maybe some Japanese food --- HELP with the advice! Are there any must-see, fairly cheap, all-American-type festivals on Sat. or Monday this weekend?
Thanks SO MUCH for your help. I love you guys (non-gender-specific term).

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Woodley, you super-planner! This is Anne, and I think you have a grand agenda. You could stop at Mall eateries inside museums, but you may find it more pleasant to recharge at tranquil Teaism. The Austin Grill is also a cheerful spot for catching up with friends. After the zoo, walk up to Cleveland Park and try the sushi at Spices. As for festivals, you can't get much more American or inexpensive than the free National Symphony Orchestra concert at the Capitol. To others who were interested in the concert, alcohol and glass bottles are not permitted. But pack yourself a picnic. I think you could go in the early evening and get have a comfortable spot.

Del Ray/Arlandria: Howdy, oh gurus of merryment. I was hoping you could help me with a question I've had for a while. I live close to the Birchmere, but have never been. I was wondering if the club has a bar that is open to the public even when someone is performing. If so, how is it?

The Going Out Gurus: hello delray/arlandria,this is Joe and as long as the show is not in the bandstand - the area you first enter at the Birchmere - you can sit at the bar without buying a ticket. You won't however, be allowed in to the performance area.

Washington, D.C.: I'm turning 30 in a few months and I'm looking for a great place to throw a party. Something in D.C. (Metro accessible), nice (but not too pricey so I can afford to buy the first hour or so of drinks for my guests) and big enough for about 100 people (and some dancing). Ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: The Childe Harold is a swell spot for dancing, and I (Anne) think 100 would make the crowd thick. Maura suggests the Blue Room, but thinks 100 could be too many people for that space. And, Clarendon Ballroom isn't in DC, but it is Metro-accessible -- lots of space there.

Washingtown: I've got a few lesbian friends that are coming to town and want to have a good time. They aren't too flashy, but would like to go to some places that that appeal to laid-back single lesbians. I know that some nights at some bars are more "gay-friendly" than others, so I didn't want to lead them astray. Any thoughts?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washingtown. You can't go wrong with the Hung Jury or Phase One. The Phase is a bit more laidback than Hung Jury, although it's possible to do both in one night.

Takoma Park, MD: Best restaurants and clubs to hit with a group of early 30s architects and designers visiting from Boston and NYC?

The Going Out Gurus: If it's smooth interiors you're after, here are some interesting ones: TenPenh, Oceanaire, Teatro Goldoni. Alexa.

Washington, D.C.: Hello.
My boyfriend and I are celebrating our year anniversary this fall, and we would like to go on a mini-vaction somewhere between 1-3 driving hours away. We are 25 years old, and don't know where to go. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. Autumn is a great time to take a mini-vacation, especially around here. Of course, where you go will depend largely on how much money you want to spend.
If you've got some dough to blow, I (Jen) suggest looking into resorts and B&Bs in the Shenandoah area of Virginia, where you can relax and take in the much talked-about fall foliage.
You might also look into inns and b&bs in West Virginia or a trip to the previously mentioned Williamsburg, both of which are lovely in fall and not far away.
Finally, if you're looking for real peace and quiet, try going to the beach in September or October. You can't get a tan, but it's still warm enough to sit outside and read a book or go for a stroll by the water. Plus most places don't close down until closer to November so you can enjoy all the usual tourist attractions with far fewer tourists.

Arlington VA: Hello! Where can a group of early 30's women go to dance Satruday night (in addition to Polly Ester's) -- I'm out of ideas!! Most places seems to be getting younger...
Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Well, if you're looking for a similar vibe to Polly Esthers, it might be hard to find with an older crowd. Pollys in Rockville, however, is more geared to the more mature set. On the other hand, Coco Loco, Red and Bohemian Caverns attract people of all ages.

Arlington VA: Thanks for help on the dress code. In return, I thought I throw in my 2 cents for the architects.

If you have time during the day- the National Building Museum is my favorite- the DC AIA chapter hosts meetings there. Always a sure-fire hit.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Arlington I (Maura) concur. Fritz neglected my suggestions in his answer, but their William Price and R.M. Schindler shows are good bets.

Montgomery Village, MD: for the wedding sites, another good book is The perfect Choice: The Ultimate Party and Wedding Location Guide. Two suggestions for locations: Brookside Gardens is beautiful and very inexpensive but you can't hold your reception there; Also if you happen to be an alumni of any of the colleges here, many of them have locations available at a substantial discount for alums. That's what I did ( as a Georgetown Law School Alumni). Got married on the main campus in Georgetown and was able to hold my reception there and get a block of rooms at the Marriott on the campus for out of town guests. All at a great savings!

The Going Out Gurus: Thank you, Montgomery Village, that's the book I was thinking of.
That alumni suggestion is a great tip, too.

Silver Spring: Where is the best meet market in DC?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, you can't go wrong with Lulu's or Rumors, SS, especially when Lulu's has all-you-can-drink Saturdays. Rumors' crowd is a touch older. Other good bets for those on the prowl include Polly Esther's, Heaven and Hell and the Irish Times (especially for college students).

Arlington, VA: For the out-of-town designers and architects, check out the National Building Museum. I believe the Wed site is nbm.org. In addition to tours of the building itself, there are a variety of exhibits. Design, construction, and architecture galore. Plus, the interior of the building itself is stunning.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, AV. I think Fritz has heard us by now.

Alexandria, VA: This is not a "going out" question, but rather feedback on your new Entertainment web design.

What's the idea with the gray lettering? This is difficult to read, especially on the gray backgrounds you have chosen to use.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Alexandria, this is Joe and sorry, we meant to answer this much earlier. Thanks for the feedback on the lettering. We'll keep looking at everything. If any readers have comments, don't hesitate to email us at: entertainment-help@wpni.com

washington D.C: Are there any college parties?

The Going Out Gurus: Do you mean college nights at area clubs, Washington, or keg-fests in the basement of Theta Chi? There are a number listed in our Where to Go if You're Under 21 story, plus a few new ones that I (Fritz) still need to check out. I'd recommend Thursday night at Polly Esther's or Platinum and Sunday Night at D.C. Live.

Alexandria: Hey Gurus! I am looking for a place to have 50-70 of my closest friends for a big birthday bash on a Saturday night.. Money is pretty tight right now...so I need cheap...and of course, space for all of those nearest and dearest to me. Last year I did Felix, but this year, the number is increasing, so...any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Well Alexandria, it might be cutting it close for Saturday night party plans, but I (Stacy) have attended similar-size birthday bashes at the Childe Harold and Townhouse Tavern. Both are "free" to rent one floor if you guarantee a rather large bar tab.

wdc: not to be a downer, but the person who is looking to get away for her anniversary will need to book ASAP, or she is going to have a bad time finding a place to stay if she is interested in viewing folliage. WE tried the Ashby Inn in Paris, VA and they have been booked until mid-November since the end of June. For some reason every plans way ahead!

The Going Out Gurus: Good to know, WDC.

SW Washington DC: My guests for this weekend will include two kids, 3 and 5 years old. They love to swim in the pool at my apartment, but I need some additional ideas. I understand we may have some rainy and/or cool weather . . . HELP!

The Going Out Gurus: Have you been to the Capital Children's Museum? This Sunday at 11 and 2 kids can make their own crayons, then explore their hands-on exhibits. Or, watch the shark feeding at 2 on Saturday at the National Aquarium.

St Mary's County. MD: Where is a good comedy club I can get to without driving into Metro DC. I have this fear of late night travels in the District. I want to go this Saturday night. Any ideas.

The Going Out Gurus: See, and I have this far of driving into St. Mary's County late at night. Go figure.
In all seriousness, I (Jen) must admit that the best comedy club around is the Improv, which, unfortunately, is in good 'ol DC. It is a safe area, though -- I've been there many times and lived to tell about it. Brian Regan is there this Saturday.
You could also try Jokes On Us in Laurel - not sure what's up this weekend, but D.L. Hughley is coming later in September.
Anyone have other suggestions?

Silver Spring MD: Will there be a Kensington Labor Day parade this year? Do you know the times?

The Going Out Gurus: Yep -- the parade starts at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Street and Plyers Mill Road, and features the Nighthawks and the University of Maryland marching band. It ends in front of the Kensington Town Hall. It's all part of a festival with crafts and children's entertainment. Call 301/946-3804.

Washington, D.C.: We are a group of 22-27 year olds that LOVE to go dancing. We enjoy clubs like Crush and Polly Esthers but are sick of going there ALL of the time. Are there any other somewhat casual clubs that play Top 40/Hip Hop in D.C.? We like to be able to wear jeans when we go out and definitely don't want to hang out with the college crowd. Are we asking too much?

The Going Out Gurus: A bit, Washington. This is Fritz, and I feel your pain - so do plenty of others, judging by the emails I get from people looking for a club like that. The simple answer ... not really. You could go to Third Edition, the Irish Times or Recessions to find what you're looking for, but you're going to run into a lot of college students - even though the first three are 21+. Chief Ike's might be an option, State of the Union is a casual spot for hip-hop, and I see more young professionals going to Lulu's these days - especially for the Z104 night - but otherwise, it's hard to find what you (and other people) are looking for.

Washington, DC: 20 members of our Dublin, Ireland office (mainly professional women in their 20's and 30's) are coming to town for training sessions the last two weeks of September. I'm in charge of developing a list of suggested activities for the weekend of September 22-23 when they have free time. Any suggestions on restaurants, bars and shopping downtown that are easily accessible by metro to include on the list? I know I'm asking a lot, but any advice would be helpful!! Thanks!!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Dublin. This is Maura. The gurus have put their collective heads together to come up with some ideas for you. It might be best to check out some of our round ups such as D.C. Nightlife 101 or Art in Washington and Off the Mall Attractions. As for specific suggestions, Alexa says try Jaleo, Hotel Washington, Cafe Atlantico or Lauriol Plaza. Fritz suggests an after dark tour of our monuments. Keep in mind that "Impressionist Still Life" opens at the Phillips Collection on Sept. 22 and the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage is always up and running. Come back next week and look for our relaunched and revitalized virtual tours of D.C.'s most bustling neighborhoods - Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, Georgetown and U Street - for more shopping and club suggestions. One good nightlife tip: Any redheads in your crowd get half-price drinks at Madam's Organ.

Re: Italian, Romantic, Georgetown: Ristorante Piccolo on 31st St (or 30th?)

The Going Out Gurus: Abundanza!
