The Starry Eye Astrologer
Hosted by Charlene Lichtenstein
Special to washingtonpost.com

Monday, Sept. 24 2001; 6 p.m. EDT

What's your sign? Do you want to know what the planets and heavenly bodies have aligned this year -- in your career, in romance or surprises in your daily life? Tonight at 6 p.m. EST, "Madame" Lichtenstein, took your questions on sun signs, lunar influences and all things in the stars.

Lichtenstein's skills run in the family. Her great aunt, Etta Weimar, was the famous Romanian card reader to both kings and queens. A native of New York City, Lichtenstein was educated in Europe where she pursued the study of tarot and astrology. She returned to New York in 1974 and has lived in Greenwich Village ever since, dispensing advice whether requested or not.

Lichtenstein's monthly and weekly astrology columns are carried in newspapers across the country. When not writing or working on her Web site, AccessNewAge.com/zscope, Lichtenstein offers private consultation. She is a member of the National Council of Geocosmic Research and often lectures on both astrology and tarot.

Wondering how Mercury in retrograde affects your day-to-day life? What eclipses means for you and your loved ones? How to get in touch with your rising sign?

Below is a transcript.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Welcome to Starry Eye Astrology. I’m Charlene Lichtenstein, the washingtonpost.com celestial seer, ready to engage everyone in a lively discussion about astrology and the new age.

There is no sense to be made from the events September 11. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted by these terrorist attacks. Here in lower Manhattan, we persevere but the landscape has changed forever.

I expect a barrage of questions on these events. Here are some random thoughts in no particular order:
1. The inevitable question for tonight – what was going on astrologically and why hasn’t anyone predicted this? Answer:
Astrology is not fate; there is free will and choice. Yet, there can be planetary alignments that indicate tougher times. In a January 2001 Starry Eye program I said - The planetary event that most affects the year 2001 is the Jupiter / Pluto opposition which occurs three times this year … expect expansive and volcanic changes. It will certainly not be a boring year!

What I did not mention at the time was that Saturn would form an opposition to Pluto seven months later, effectively replacing Jupiter in the aspect. Jupiter is the planet of expansion. Saturn is the planet of problems. Pluto is the planet of volcanic change.

2. Saturn is in Gemini during this opposition, the sign of the twins… Twin Towers.
3. The WTC towers were 28 years old – Saturn Return.
4. Read Michael Wolfstar O’Reilly’s NewScope on www.AccessNewAge.com for an event-based astrological analysis of the past two weeks.
5. For those in a Nostradamus frame of mind, check out John Hogue and www.dreamscape.com/morgana sites.
6. There has been a numerology email making the rounds that talks about the importance of the number 11. Read more about it on the home page of www.AccessNewAge.com .
7. Events and “things” (like buildings) have horoscope charts. I happen to have Osama bin Laden’s birth date and birth place (unfortunately not his time of birth). Nonetheless, if someone is interested in more details, you only have to ask…
8. Same thing for the birth of the World Trade Towers (actually the date of the ribbon cutting ceremony on 4/4/73). Interesting planetary positions….

And now, let’s get to your questions.

Port Townsend, Wash.:

Subject: George Bush' Mercury-Pluto Conjunction, on his Leo Ascendant

--from Mr. Bush, at September 24 briefing, available at CSpan's 'September 11th' Web Page, on freezing terrorist assets, this quote, right in the first few minutes of the briefing:

"...This war on terrorism will be fraught -- fought -- on a variety of fronts."

And, the phrase we are all coming to know so well, "Make no mistake about it," was used three times.
Following is a commentary based on a rather startling astrological configuration in Mr. Bush' natal chart.

He has an exact conjunction -- two planets in the same degree of the zodiac at the same moment in time -- of Mercury, the winged messenger and the fleetest of planets, with Pluto, the deep and the vast, and with the slowest orbit.

Mercury, in essence, conjoined Pluto, and at that moment wee George, among others, was born. The deep reaches and its swiftest messenger were of the same essence as they met in at exactly -0.43' minute orb] the minut George was born in the constelllation of Leo, on his

Ascendant, i.e.,the astrological location of the manifestation of his, persona, that which interacts with the outside world.

What could this mean? Astrologically, that George is obligated by his Soul to speak the deepest Truth. Whether he wishes to or not.

This deep problem/opportunity seems to be the emblem for his constant neurological short circuiting that manifests in spasmodic verbal lapses. His soul desires to speak the truth. He cannot but. But we will have observed that the rest of the persona is in conflict with that. So as soon as the words are out, there is a synaptic spasm of one sort or another. And sometimes Mr. Bush speaks the truth, his truth, plain.

His words have a deeply skewed truth to them. A prophetic irony, sybil-like.

I believe one should really, really, really listen to George Bush, especially when he repeats things three times. He really is trying to tell us something, make no mistake about it.

The above comment quoted from the September 24 briefing is a good illustration of this. The astrological connection is also an illustration of how deep and how important apparent trivial lapses might be to understanding this man. He is truly a messenger. But of what?

In any event, we should, I think, realize that George Bush is always speaking truth, can we but bear to listen.

Ms. Lichtenstein, will you give us your opinion of the above mentioned conjunction on the Ascendant in Leo?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Thank you for your interesting analysis.

Let's see. Indeed George Bush's natal chart has mercury 9 degrees and Pluto 10 degrees to his 7 degree rising sign. I read that to mean that his communications are volcanic, transformative and can set new things in motion. Ain't that the truth!

They are also all in Leo which is out front, honest, dramatic and fiery (like all fire signs). It is the placement of a leader, belieing his softer, more sensitive cancer sun sign.

Understand too that his birth chart has progressed (I don't have it in front of me) but the progression should be placing this conjunction deeper into his 1st house. That leads me to believe that his 12th house saturn (planet of problems) may be close to or sitting in his 1st house. This can make his communication wiser (saturn) or problematic (saturn).

Astrology can be rather uncanny....

Atlanta, Ga.: I need help? My birth info is 7/27/44, 12:35 p.m., Anniston, Ala. My ex-boyfriend is 9/6/38, Birmingham, Ala.

June 20, 2001, my boyfriend broke up with me over the telephone, I still don't understand why. I had already started moving to Atlanta to be closer to him at that time. It was too late to turn back and I moved to Atlanta on July 22.

I work as an independent contractor and had been quite successful in Houston. Since I have been in Atlanta, I have not been able to earn a dime here. I am still getting new clients in Houston, however, that is about tapped out.

My questions are: will I find income producing work here in Atlanta, will my ex and I reconcile or should I return to Houston?

By the way, Atlanta is on my sun midheaven line. In Houston, I have no lines.

I need to make a decision this week. I have really taken severe hits in the stock market/pocketbook.

Thank you so much if you can answer this.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Oh dear – sorry to hear that! I ran two quick charts for you – one based in Atlanta and the other in Houston. Of course this is only a topline and you really need to decide for yourself but I actually see the Atlanta chart as being slightly better for career – Jupiter, the planet of luck and expansion sits in your 10th house of career in Atlanta, and in your 11th house of friends in Houston. Maybe you had more of a social network in Houston. But in both cities, Mars sits in your 11th house so I see you going out and creating new social networks in both cities. You may feel more emotional in Atlanta (makes sense…) because the moon sits in your 12th house of secrets and personal undoings. In Houston, it is in your 1st house of new beginnings – a bit more emotionally optimistic.

Finally, in Houston, Cancer sits on your midheaven indicating that your career is an area of security and warmth. In Atlanta, Leo is on the midheaven indicating a city where you can become the center of attention and can be much more independent. In my opinion Atlanta may, in the long run, be a more successful place for you professionally.

So now on to this guy – He has sun in virgo, moon in pisces and venus in scorpio. Is he thin skinned? Jealous? Possibly prone to delusional emotional thinking? Moon in moody, hopelessly romantic pisces may be a difficult placement to match with someone like you with moon in breezy, chatty Libra. Same thing for jealous, possessive venus in scorpio combined with a grand gesture, ever needing attention venus in leo. You know, sometimes the fates send us a gift when we least expect it!

Mount Vernon, Va.: Dear Charlene:

I'm hoping you can give me some insight into my life. I've had two interviews for a job I'm hoping to get. Im also interested in an older man, but have not made any move yet-help! He's an Aries, 3/26/53. Can you shed some light on these situations?

11/10/67, 8:30 a.m., Maryland

Thank you for your time! It's always a pleasure to read your column -- you do a great job!

Charlene Lichtenstein: Thank you.
Well, you have sun (general personality) in intense scorpio, moon (emotions) in romantic pisces, mercury (communication) in incisive scorpio, venus (love) in diplomatic and charming libra and mars (action) in careful, political Capricorn. Possibly Sag rising which places steady, loyal Virgo on the cusp of your 10th house of career. Which of these two job offers gives you the most stability, which one allows you to be of service to others, to roll up your sleeves and get the job done. That will be the one that gives you the most satisfaction.

As far as this older man is concerned, he has his moon in leo and venus in Taurus. Both your venus and his are naturally ruled by venus so there is some connection there. It is how you express your love to each other that may sometimes need a translater. He can be very sensual and physical. Venus in libra makes someone more mentally romantic. You love “love talk”, he loves action. You are far more open to expressing your emotions than he is. He needs emotional support all the time. Nothing is impossible to willing hearts!

Alexandria, Va.: The stars have not been auspicious for my getting a reading from you through this forum. I've submitted a couple of times, but circumstances have worked against me. I was born in Kansas City, Mo. at 2:30 a.m. on 10/16/40. What does the coming year hold for me?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Thank you for your patience! So, you have sun in libra (a charming, diplomatic and sociable personality), moon in aries (you express your emotions in a forthright and confident manner), mercury in scorpio ( a calculating and strategic thinker and communicator), venus in virgo (loyal and steadfast in love), and mars in libra (you can charm your opponents and always strive for balance in an argument). Possibly leo rising which makes you either rather dramatic looking or interested in being in the center of attention. Also a grand thinker.

Lucky Jupiter is transiting your 12th house of hidden things for a couple of years so there may be some unexpected rewards in some hidden places. Saturn, planet of challenges, hovers in your friendship sector indicating more than the usual amount of misunderstandings between friends – however it also means you can learn a few things from social groups. Mars, the planet of action will be entering your 7th house of relationships on Oct 28 so you will find yourself putting more energy into forming one to one partnerships for apx the following month. Pluto is sitting in your 5th house of fun which can lead to creative transformations and inspiration.

The sun will oppose your midheaven on Oct 24 and you may feel like you have to choose between home and career. This should pass quickly.

Hope that helps!

Washington, D.C.: Hi Charlene,
I hope all of your loved ones are OK given the events of 9-11 ... Astrologically speaking, did you know something was amiss or that the planets were aligned in such a way that you knew something "bad" was going to happen? Also, what do the stars tell us about the outcome of this war? How long will it last? Thanks for your time to comment on this ....

Charlene Lichtenstein: Thank you. We were in Greenwich Village which is about 2 miles north. Our hospital was one of the main trauma units.

Well, in my inro, I mentioned the Pluto/Saturn opposition which can indicate some dramatic, difficult events. But gosh, who could have predicted this?

I ran a bunch of charts - for the first plane, the second plane, the Pentagon plane and the two tower collapses. I also have the planetary data for the ribbon cutting ceremony for the "birth" of the towers.

The one thing that struck me about the WTC 1 and 2 collapse charts is the stellium (bunch) of planets in the 8th house of death and regeneration. The vertex, which is a power point, was also in the 8th house of both collapse charts.

The birth chart of the WTC has sun, moon and venus in robust, arrogant and imposing Aries. Mars in Aquarius - passive aggressive and also international or far reaching (aquarius) activity).

Comparing the birth chart to the 9/11/01 chart has Saturn (problems) conjunct (like a firecracker) Saturn and Saturn opposite Neptune (delusional thinking). Some others -
Neptune retrograde trine Uranus retrograde ( surprises/explosions) , Neptune sextile neptune - foggy thinking goes awry., neptune trine pluto both retro - delusions coupled with transforming change.

I could go on......

State of Confusion: Thank you for all your wise counsel in the past. As you predicted back in February-ish time frame, when I was lamenting that I was lucky in every aspect of my life but romance, I am now overrun with men in my life and have almost too many choices to be able to think straight. My DOB is 30 May 1963, Inverness Florida, at 2 p.m. Is all this romance just a distraction for fun or is something serious coming down the pike? Any idea when I will meet a "keeper?"

Charlene Lichtenstein: Ha! Be careful of what you wish!

So you have sun in gemini, moon in virgo and venus in taurus. Yes, you prefer loyalty and permanence even though you have sun in flighty gemini.

You may feel more in control when Mars (planet of action) moves more into Aries around mid January 2002. In the meantime, enjoy all the attention! And keep your eye out for an earthy counterpart (well, lots of earth in their chart....)

Binghamton, N.Y.: Was wondering what type of personality Usama bin Laden has according to his horoscope.

Charlene Lichtenstein: First - I have to tell you that I found a name analyzer on the internet and it is wonderful. It is on the Zodialogical Zephyer:

NAME ANALYSIS FOR: Osama bin Laden

Osama:
Your privacy is important to you. You are protective of family and family name. You are tenacious and never give up. You try to be prudent. You have good business acumen. You have much enthusiasm with a driving attitude toward achievement in life. You are always involved with projects and things to do. You have a need to be up front.

bin:
You have a tendency to resist change. Don't miss opportunities for growth. You have a love of creature comforts, but must learn to handle money. You are relatively demonstrative in your affections. You enjoy being stroked verbally and physically. You can handle details well. You have a methodical mind.

Laden:
You are fair-minded sometimes to the point of being opinionated. You have a strong need to be loved and appreciated. You have a need to be up front. You have a discriminating nature coupled with perseverance and family pride. You can be quite inventive and quite curious. You must learn to give 'wise' service and not be a martyr.

I love that!
Now, to your question - he was born on March 10, 1957 in Saudi Arabia. He has sun in pisces, mercury in pisces, venus in pisces and mars in taurus. WIth mars in taurus - he sets his sights on something and keeps hammering and hammering until he either breaks his hammer or breaks through. There is no stopping a mars in taurus.

There are no cardinal signs in his chart - cardinal signs start change. I see this to mean that he recruits others to do his change for him. He has a load of mutable planets indicating he can roll with change and adapt quickly.

Much more to tell but we only have an hour show!

Alexandria, Va.: Hi Charlene! My birthday is tomorrow (9/25/1958, 1:03 p.m., Arlington, Va.) and I'm curious if there is anything interesting coming up in the next few months. I'm going to Italy in early November (and yes, I'm still going!) I suspect various relatives would be a lot happier about it if I could tell them that romance is more likely than trouble.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Happy Birthday! Go to Italy and have a great time!

You have sun in libra indicating a cheery, diplomatic and charming personality, mercury in virgo - a careful thinker and communicator, venus in virgo - a loyal and steadfast companion, and mars in gemini - you fight with words, can be charmed by words and are a good strategist.

You probably have aquarius rising which places leo on the cusp of your 7th house of relationships and flirtatious gemini on the 5th house of romance. You can be very flirtatious but now you have Saturn retrograde hovering in your 5th hosue of romance. Maybe you are sounding more serious, maybe you are frustrate din finding romance.

Mars, the planet of action enters your first house of new beginnings on Oct 28 and will set things in motion for you for about 3 weeks (covering early Nov). Use this time to meet new people and try new things. I see surprises there too with retro Uranus and Neptune currently in your 1st house too. Be extra careful and don't be naive. (can mean that you fall head over heels for a new person, it can also mean that your well intentioned actions have overarchng reprucussions).

After Oct 24th there may be some interesting opportunities in your career - great possibilities!

So happy birthday and have fun in Italy!

Denver, Colo.: Thanks for answering.

What is bin Laden birth date? What can you tell us of him? What is going on now in his chart? Progressions?

Charlene Lichtenstein: More on bin Laden:

Comparing his birthchart to the event chart on 9/11/01, we see many "hard" aspects - squares, oppositions and conjunctions. This to me indicates real connection and tremendous hatred.

Sun oppositie sun - opposite personal missions between bin Laden and the events. Moon conjunct moon - emotionally charged relationship between the two charts, sun square moon - goals conflict with emotions of the opponent, sun square saturn - goals at odds with structure of the opponent, sun square pluto - his goals at odds with the transforming change from his opponent (westernization?), saturn opposite saturn - conflict!, saturn conjunct Pluto - clashes and volcanic change, neptune square neptune - delusions magnified. retro pluto opposite retro uranus - transforming change coupled with explosive surpries.

Whew!

St. Mary's City, Md.: Madame -- what was there in the stars to indicate the horrible attack we suffered on September 11th? What do you see happening to America in the next 6-12 months? Thank you.

Charlene Lichtenstein: I'm not sure I can answer that. I keep thinking about Nostradamus predicting a 27 year war after the third anti-Christ (have we met him yet?).

I think this is a long campaign but not one that will involve constant physical fighting. The opposition between Saturn and Pluto will dissipate in June 2002 but the effects may linger longer.

Bethesda, Md.: I was born on June 15, 1968 around 9 p.m. in Albany, N.Y. I am currently looking for a new job. Any insight that you can provide on the career front? When do you think things will begin to fall into place?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Okay, you have sun in gemini, moon in aquarius, mercury in gemini, venus in gemini and mars in gemini. Lots of intellectual gemini and breezy air signs in your chart. Possibly capricorn or aquarus rising which would place libra/scorpio on the cusp of your 10th house of career.

The sun will be transiting libra until oct 24th when it enters scorpio, crossing the top of your chart. I see great opportunities career wise for you at that time. Are you looking? It will be a time of reaping what you have sowen.

Also, energetic Mars is in capricorn and will be entering aquarius on Oct 28th. You will have great energy for new tings, new ideas and new endeavors. Make good use of this surge.

Bethesda, Md.: I'm in rut career-wise and would like to do something different. But I'm also concerned about all the world events right now and feel like everything is so unstable, that is't not a good time for a change. What does the future look like in terms of employment and timing on when to make a change? I was born on Nov. 5, 1952 in Detroit, Mich., between 8:30-9:00 p.m. Thanks.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Well, I hate to say it but we cannot ut our lives on hold for all of the "what ifs" in this crazy world. I think that one of the lessons of Sept 11 is that we need to live life to the fullest every single day. If you are very unhappy and want to do something different, guage your risks but don't be afraid of the world events.

That being said, you have sun in scorpio, mercury in sagittarius, venus in sag and mars in capricorn. You are an expansive thinker and a careful implementer. You can measure the risks and rewards easily in your actions (capricorn) and I have no doubt that you will make the best decisions for yourself.

You probably have gemini rising which places pisces on the top of your chart in your career sector. Your career has to mean something to you. It may have a spiritual pull or something other worldly about it.

Saturn is transiting your first house of new beginnings putting a damper on any new things. It is going retrograde now and redirects on Feb 2002. During this period you may not feel comfortable trying new things and this is wise. Wait until Saturn redirects and then put your wisdom to work and find the career that is right for you.
Good luck to you.

Arlington: I (female, 5/19/50, around 12:15 p.m. or so, mid-West) have been friends for decades with a man born Nov. 1, '47 (don't know the time), western Europe. What do you see for the future of this relationship? We seem to have an ebb and flow, but I can't quite seem to get a fix on what it's all about. We're both married, but have been friends since long before our marriages. Some deep vibes between us but I'm not sure exactly what.

Also, what do you see for me financially over the next year or two? I'm thinking of making a career change but feel a little nervous financially.

Charlene Lichtenstein: You have sun and venus in passionate scorpio.
He too has sun and venus in scorpio. Pow! There is an attraction but you could both be moths flying too close to the flame! I see it more hot and brief....

You possibly have aquarius rising which places leo on the cusp of your 7th house of relationships. What is your husband's birth information? You need constant attention and reassurance. Not sure if another double scorp has the patience for that. Your 7th hosue is squaring his venus and sun (yours too). DO you know what you want?

Career? The sun transits your 10th house of career for a month beginning Oct 24. It would be a good time to concentrate on what you want professionally.

Lansing, Mich.: Madame, currently I am broken up with my boyfriend, or maybe he doesn't think we are? I don't know if I should get back with him. My birthdate is June 6, 1971, Rochester, N.Y. whereas he was born August 13, 1973 in Saigon, Vietnam ...

Charlene Lichtenstein: Not sure if you are or you aren't but here goes:

You are in the middle of your Saturn Return - a three year period from ages 27-30 of stress, change, frustration and possible indecision. We know what we want but we either cannot get it or are dissatisfied with it.

My advice, wait until after your 30th birthday (it's coming up soon!). You will then have a much clearer idea of what you want in a boyfriend.

Until then, read more about the Return period at www.AccessNewAge.com/zscope

Charlene Lichtenstein: Oh my - we have run out of time! Thank you all for your great questions. For those who I could not get to tonight, please, please, please try again next week - Monday, October 1 at 6p.

Until next Monday at 6p, happy stargazing!
