The Starry Eye Astrologer
Hosted by Charlene Lichtenstein
Special to washingtonpost.com

Monday, Sept. 10, 2001; 6 p.m. EDT

What's your sign? Do you want to know what the planets and heavenly bodies have aligned this year -- in your career, in romance or surprises in your daily life? Tonight at 6:15 p.m. EST, "Madame" Lichtenstein, took your questions on sun signs, lunar influences and all things in the stars.

Lichtenstein's skills run in the family. Her great aunt, Etta Weimar, was the famous Romanian card reader to both kings and queens. A native of New York City, Lichtenstein was educated in Europe where she pursued the study of tarot and astrology. She returned to New York in 1974 and has lived in Greenwich Village ever since, dispensing advice whether requested or not.

Lichtenstein's monthly and weekly astrology columns are carried in newspapers across the country. When not writing or working on her Web site, AccessNewAge.com/zscope, Lichtenstein offers private consultation. She is a member of the National Council of Geocosmic Research and often lectures on both astrology and tarot.

Wondering how Mercury in retrograde affects your day-to-day life? What eclipses means for you and your loved ones? How to get in touch with your rising sign?

Below is a transcript.

Starbite of the week:
Martin Piechota has been analyzing sun signs to see if there is any trends by profession that deviate from the general population. He has found some interesting patterns. For example, in a study of 1,554 cleaning professional, over 11% were born with sun in Virgo; +24% higher than the general population distribution of Virgos. In 1082 auto accidents, the greatest number of victims had natal sun in the mars ruled signs of Aries or Scorpio. It therefore seems that Aries or Scorpio natives are 13-15% more likely to be involved in car accidents. Mr. Piechota has studied the nursing profession (more than likely to be in sensitive water signs) and NFL Hall of Famers (Sagittarians). Coincidence? I think not.

And now what do you divine? Please include your full birth information with any astrological question.

Tacoma, Wash.:
Is the ability to read stars an ingrained talent, or a skill that can be learned? Doesn't it require some measure of psychic ability?

Charlene Lichtenstein: It can be learned and, if I say so myself, it takes abslutley no psychic ability, because I have none :-)

There are schools of astrology across the world. There are also astrological organizations that offer classes like the National Council of Geocosmic Research with chapters across the United States. There are also great books - my favorite is Debbie Kempton Smith's "Secrets From a Stargazers Notebook".

And it's loads of fun.

Dallas, Texas: Hello, Charlene. I have my moon in Leo (born: Feb. 12, 1979 in Dallas at 4am), and loathe many of the character traits I associate with this placement -- a need for excessive attention, definite ego issues. How does a person escape loathed character traits if they are a dominating force in your chart?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Negative characteristics of a sign only dominate your behavior if you allow them too. WHy not concentrate on the positive characteristics of moon in leo - grand generousity of emotion, expansiveness of feeling, no ill will to anyone, forgiveness, confidence and charm.

Not bad......!

Washington, D.C.:
How do you respond to critics that say astrology is unholy or violates free will?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Balderdash! or some such word....

First, astrology is not unholy. Even the Christian bible speaks of the three wise men being, yes, astrologers!

And astrology does not violate free will. Think of astrology like headlights in a car - you turn them on at night to see the road ahead of you. You still have to drive the car! (credit to astrologer Bob Marks for the definition.)

Beirut, Lebanon: I was born in Monrovia, Liberia on December 30, 1957 around 6:00 p.m. local time, to Lebanese parents. What will the next six months be offering me? Thank you Charlene.

Charlene Lichtenstein: You have sun (basic personality) in Capricorn, moon (emotions) in aries, mercury (communication) in sagittarius, venus (love) in aquarius, mars (action) in sag and possibly cancer rising.

So I would say that you are basically a conservative and careful person. You are a serious person but have a very expansive outlook and your actions have great impact. You have a strong emotional constitution - you are not shy about demonstrating the depth of your feelings. You love people but may have trouble settling on one particular person.

I see the next six month as being great for new beginnings (Jupiter in the 1st house). Meet new people and start new projects - they will prove to be lucky. You may question your belief system during this time too and reevaluate what you hold near and dear. Pluto in your 6th house indicates changes in your day to day job. Try to reduce stress as well during the next year or so.

Spend time with family especially after Sept 23 - great things will happen.

Hope that helps!

Washington, D.C.: Hello Mme Lichtenstein!
I really look forward to your chats. I was hoping you could tell me more about the role of chiron in relationship charts. In my last two relationships, first my chiron was conjunct his sun and then it was exactly reversed. All that I really get is that there must be serious 'healing' issues going on, but with wounding all at the same time.

Can you shed any more light on to this? Having his chiron exactly on my sun has been less than fun although I feel deeply committed. Thank you so much!

Charlene Lichtenstein: I don't really examine asteroids in relationships. Chiron is the sign of the wounded warrior and I would think that Chiron would cause wounding more than healing in a relationship. I tend to think that where it sits in one's natal chart is a wound that needs to be healed but constantly reopens.

But honestly, I get so much from the planets and lights I really don't check out the asteroids. I like to keep it as simple as possible.

Dublin, Ireland: My Saturn Return officially starts on Tuesday 11th. I was wondering what the main influences are going to be. I have felt that I have invested a lot in my life so far, in my career, including having written a book, trained as a classical singer and also the day job, which is teaching. I would just love to know what I can expect. My date of birth is 8th January 1973 at 7.40 p.m.

Thank you very much, Gemma.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Hi Gemma,
Thank you for your question.
You have three major planets in Capricorn which are ruled by Saturn and these planets are sitting in your first hosue of new beginnings. I would say that your return will impact new things, new people and new ideas. This can be very good - maybe your return will have more stress from an over abundance rather than from the usual return frustration.

Your natal saturn sits in your 5th hosue of "fun" and creativity but is is very close to your 6th house of the day to day job and health that it could impact that sector as well. Watch that stress level and learn how to prioritize.

I see only good aspects to your Saturn so whatever you go through will bring even greater success - the aspect to surprising uranus may indicate suprisingly good impact too.

Hope that helps!

Bethesda, Maryland: Charlene,

I enjoy your column very much and your celestial advice is out of this world (pun intended). I have submitted my data a few times and was hoping that this time I might get an answer from the stars. I was born in Guatemala 4/20/60, no known time as I was raised by an aunt, having a confusing time in a relationship with a man who is intelligent, caring, loving, honest but who keeps changing his mind about marriage yet doesn't want to lose me but to continue being part of his life nonetheless (he's afraid of marriage after a messy divorce), born 1/1/58 10:00AM in Malaga, Spain. We have stopped seeing each other for lengths of time but we keep getting back together, most of the time we just happen to run into each other or circumstances have brought us back together. We very close and are happy together but after two years, I'm getting restless and was wondering whether there could be marriage in the future if I wait a little longer. Thanks a million!

Charlene Lichtenstein: I think I might have answered this at one point but AOL is so erratic that maybe it missed the queue. So let's try it again!

So you have sun in 29 degrees Aries, moon in aquarius, mercury and venus in aries and mars in pisces. Without a birthtime, I cannot figure out your rising sign - sorry.

He has sun in capricorn, moon in taurus, mercury in sag, venus in aquarius and mars in sag. Possibly pisces rising.

Your moon (emotions) and venus (love) are less sentimental and romantic and more friendly and platonic. Venus in aries is robust and aggressive but necessarily cuddly. But this is not bad - his venus is in aquarius so he is not necessarily the most romantic person in the world either. The challenge is to see how the two of you can create the heat from all of these airy and fiery love planets.

With pisces rising, he has practical (but sensually earthy) virgo on the cusp of the 7th house of relationships. He is seeking a bit of oomph to help him overcome his barrier of emotion.

With your mars in sensitive and romantic pisces, you have the wherewithal to get a bit more romantic and touch his need for connection. Can you do it?

Let me know!

New Carrollton, Maryland: How is it possible for you to know what the stars hold for indiviuals prosperity, health and other things?

Can you also predict the future for yourself? If so, then you must be rich. Because you should know what number to play in the lottery. Or maybe the stars don't tell you everything.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Sigh!
Astrology does not predict the future. It is a timing mechanism or a guidemap but you still have to make your own future. You have choices, you have abilities. You can overcome struggles in your chart or you can let them override you. You are in charge.

No one can predict the future. But you can use astrology to make the future more successful for yourself. No doubt!

no city, no state: Hi, I'm submitting this early because I can't be online for the discussion. I'm in a very dry, detail-oriented job (editing) but I'm thinking of pursuing something more artsy and creative (theater, specifically acting). My birthday is 1/10/74, Lakeland, Fla., 1:10 a.m. Should I go for it?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Hello no city no state.

You have sun in capricorn, moon in leo (the sign of the theater by the way...) mercury in capricorn, venus in aquarius, mars in taurus. Possibly scorpio rising which places leo on the top of your chart (profession) and sensitive psices ont he cusp of the 5th house of the arts.

With persevering cap, you can achieve anything you set your mind to do. Emotionally you are expansive, a bit theatrical and love to be the center of attention. You love all people (venus) and are quite an orator anyway. And of course, with leo on the cusp of your 10th house, you were made for any career that places you in the epicenter.

I would say give it a go. Of course my conservative virgo on the 2nd house of finances says, try it after work and keep your boring paycheck going until you hit theatrical paydirt.

Washington, D.C.: Charlene, I am in need of some guidance, as I'm in the midst of a sort of total-life upheaval right now. I was born at 10:36 am, Honolulu, HI, 6/26/78. I enjoy the industry in which I work, but my boss is rather spiteful and is difficult to work with. I would like to move to New York or overseas and find a job elsewhere, but I don't know to do what (perhaps teach), as I fear that I am to be relegated to admin work forever. Because of this daily stress my creative pursuits (writing and photography) have dimished to nothing. My boyfriend of over 2 years (6/21/76, Pennsylvania), has just moved away and I believe he cheated on me (I asked him, he denied it, that's the extent of the discussion, but I do not believe him). My apartment was robbed, twice, and as of this weekend I have just moved back home with my parents. I only have a few close friends left in the area, and my outlook on life and my approach to it, while I superficially feel fine, is most definitely pessimistic and negative, and I'm afraid it's part of my personality now.

In light of all that's going on, what direction can I expect all of this to take? Thanks!

Charlene Lichtenstein: Whew.
You have sun in cancer, moon in pisces, mercury in cancer, venus in leo and mars in virgo. Possibly virgo rising which would place transiting saturn on the top of your chart...your house of career.

Plans may feel like they are going awry and with all that water in your chart (cancer sun, emotional moon in pisces) you are much more sensitive than most to these upsets. Your natal moon is opposing transitng saturn now making things feel more emotionally impactful than usual.

But I see great luck with friends and/or large social groups. Maybe it's time to get more involved in a creative group of people. Seek them out. I see positive changes here.

Pluto is traniting your home and security so there are definitely some colcanic transformations here. Often, Pluto in the home causes pipes to overflow but I would not be surprised if it has imapcted these break-ins. Pluto offers change when change is needed. Obviously you need to secure your surroundings so heed Plutos strong advice and do so.

Hope this helps.

Silver Spring, Md.: Hi Charlene,

I have been reading the posts regularly and have enjoyed it immensely. This is my first post here. I was born on August 28, 1973 at 12:05 a.m. in New Delhi, India. My boyfriend was born on November 19, 1972 at 10:20 p.m. in Washington State. We have been dating for close to two years and this year has been quite difficult. We broke up few times but can't seem to stay apart for long and end up back together.
Where are we headed? And do our stars match?

Many Thanks.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Thank you.
You have sun in virgo, moon in virgo, venus in libra and possibly gemini rising which would place sagittarius on the cusp of your 7th house of relationships. Basically I see you as a steady, loyal, earthy person who can be very charming and flirtatious in love.

He has sun in intense scorpio, venus in charming libra and possibly cancer rising which places capricorn on his 7th house cusp.

There is compatibilty here - first, your basic personality (sun) meshes well with his sun. Your moon (emotions) is compatible with his sun as well. And your sun and moon well aspect his 7th house sign.

You both have venus in libra so you both may be too charming for words. One of you has to get off the fence and committ.

Adding to all of this is the fact that both of you are in some stage of your Saturn Return. This is a three year period from apx 27-30 of change, frustrationa nd stress. (Read more about it at www.AccessNewAge.com/zscope)
You may be like two ships passing in the night, until you rediscover each other around age 30.

Give it more time!

Mixed messages, Washington, D.C.: Good evening,

I hope you and the stars can provide
some insight on this relationship. I'm
submitting early because I am unable to
be online at 6pm.

Me: 11-24-68, 11:50pm, Philadelphia, PA
Him: 1-21-55, time unknown, Boston, MA

We are the best of friends and to
outsiders it appears as if we are more
than just friends. (I've often been
questioned by people as to the status of
our "relationship" and some do not belive
me when i say "We are just friends.")
Honestly, sometimes it seems like we
are meant for one another, but the next
time, it is as if we are brother and sister.
Is there a future for us beyond friendship?

I appreciate any insight you can give.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Dear Mixed,

You have sun in sagittarius and venus in capricorn. Possibly virgo rising which places pisces on the cusp of your 7th house of relationships. You are generally an optimistic person, honest and friendly. You may be a bit less confident in love - afraid of risking the leap. You are also highly romantic and perhaps naive in partnerships looking for perfection and getting disappointed when you don't find it.

He has sun and mercury in aquariusvenus in sagittarius - a practical open sort who is less one on one - he loves people but may have trouble settling on one particular person.

Is there a future? I'd say there is a good chance - t here are compatibilites here - both your suns are well aspected as is his venus (planet of love) to your sun. Your venus needs more confidence. If he can assure of his love, that is all you need.

Alexandria, Va.: I am currently in danger of being laid off from my job- what do you see in my career future? Born 6/3/1978, 8:29 pm, Columbia, MD. Thanks much!

Charlene Lichtenstein: Let's see. You have sun in gemini, mercury in taurus, mars in leo and possibly capricorn rising which placeslibra on your 10th house of career and gemini on your 6th house of the day to day job.

Long term career will get a boost on Sept 23rd as the sun enters your 10th house. Start real career planning now (mercury has already entered your 10th house so that is what you'll be concentrating on for most of the month)

Saturn (planet of problems and challenges but also wisdom gained by hard work) in gemini is sitting in your 6th house of the job so there will be lessons to be learned here for a while. Apply all that you learn (both good and bad) to building a professinal path that will be even more succesful down the road.

McLean, Va.: Hi Charlene- Love your column-I read it weekly. I hope you can help me...
Born in Alexandria, Va., on 12-7-69 at 3:38pm. I'm experiencing huge changes in my personal life. Will this chaos end anytime soon? What do you see for me? Thanks for your time.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Well, you have sun in sag, moon in scorpio, mercuryin sag, venus in sag and mars in aquarius. Possibly taurus rising so all these sag planets are sitting in your 8th house of deep personal issues, psychology and deep relationships with other.

Aha! Transformative Pluto is tranisting sagittariusnow so I am not surprised by this chaos. Pluto upends the landscape and cannot be predicted. But Pluto brings change where change is needed and helps you clear away the debris that may be holding you back.

This is a several year process but as it progresses, yo will feel it less and less and will be able to harness the power rather than struggle on the sidelines.

Your sun is 14 degrees sag and pluto is currently 12 degrees. I'd say it will abate by December.

Boston, Mass.: Hi Charlene!
I have a new baby. Her sun in in Leo, Moon in Scorpio with Libra as accendant. I have sun in Aries, Moon in Leo and Leo rising. Her father has sun in Libra, Moon in Pisces and unsure of ascendant. What do you see for our future family dynamic? My husband and I have enjoyed great harmony as an Aries/Libra combo, and wonder what our little Lion will bring to the mix.

Charlene Lichtenstein: I am always amazed at how children take on the planets of their parents!

SHe sounds like a sunny person with deep emotions and strong emotional bonds. With libra rising she will be very attractive and charming as an adult as well as now as a baby!I would say that she will have great emotional connection to her father - their moons are well aspected. You can provide the confidence for her and be a supportive audience for her achievements. Your suns are well aspected indicting great connection and friendship.

How is that?

Alexandria, Va.: Hi. I am interested in giving my boyfriend a gift certificate for a psychic reading for his birthday. Can you recommend anyone in the area (Alex/Arl/D.C.) that I could contact? Thanks!

Charlene Lichtenstein: Hmmm. Not sure but the American Federation of Astrology is located in Washington so you may want to contact them for referrals.

What a great idea for a gift!

Tennessee: Hi Madam:
My birth date is No.v 22, 1965, time: 12:26 p.m. (Indiana Standard Time), Monday. I am having problems in marriage. Please tell me whether it will improve pretty soon. Thanks for your help.

Charlene Lichtenstein: What would help would be the birth information of your spouse so we can compare the two charts.

You have sun in scorpio who feels deeply and can be intense and possessive (not a bad thing...), venus in capricorn who is loyal and caring and may be afraid of expressing your emotions for fear of rejection. Possibly aquarius rising which places leo on your 7th house of marriage.

Venus is currently sitting in your 7th hosue revealing opportunities for love and reapproachment. Don't be afraid of expressing how you feel.

But also - send me your spouses information on the next show and I can get a bit more specific.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Wow!! We have run out of time and there are sooooooo many great questions left. I am so sorry but we have to stop for now.

But never fear - next Monday, September 17 at 6p - is the next edition of the Starry Eye. Please send in your great questions in time for next week's show.

And until then, happy stargazing!
